Welcome to another spectacular season of programs at the Norton Center for the Arts.

We are proud to continue to offer our community a full spectrum of performing arts. We hand-pick from the world’s finest artists to create a vibrant and well-rounded season, and then invite you to become the curator and create your own series!

Instead of our selecting pre-determined series’ from which you can choose, such as Broadway, Rock and Pops, Jazz and World, or Classical, we encourage you to create your own series based on your own themes, availability and budget.

You can still create a more conventional series, such as those just listed, or mix things up and be creative!

Your series reflects your interests and your level of adventure. Your series also helps you to plan arts events all year long. You rock! So, have fun and name your own series on the order form. We’ll post the most creative names that describe your own performance selections. And feel free to tag #MyNortonSeries if you want to share with us via social media.

Multiple Grammy® nominee Martina McBride has sold over 18 million albums to date, including 20 Top 10 singles and six #1 hits. In February 2016, she released her first single, “Reckless,” the title track from her new album which is now available. Noam Pikelny has emerged as the preeminent banjoist of his generation: a founding member of Punch Brothers, a 3-time Grammy®-nominee, and recipient of the first annual Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass in 2010. His latest album, Universal Favorite is the fourth released under his own name, but it’s truly his solo debut. His previous efforts— including 2011’s Beat the Devil and Carry a Rail and 2014’s landmark Noam Pikelny Plays Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe— were full-band affairs that revealed his abilities as a dynamic bandleader while reinforcing his reputation as an inventive accompanist. Edgar Winter has been celebrated across the globe since his 1970 solo debut, Entrance. His early recording of “Tobacco Road” is a powerful, emotionally devastating masterpiece that propelled him into the national spotlight. A standard-bearer of innovation and artistic excellence, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is one of the world’s foremost chamber orchestras.

Founded in 1972, Orpheus has recorded 71 albums, including the Grammy® Award-winning Shadow Dances: Stravinsky Miniatures, and premiered over 40 commissioned works.

For their Norton Center debut, Orpheus is joined by superstar pianist André Watts who returns to the Norton Center after 27 years. Watts burst upon

the music world at 16, when Leonard Bernstein chose him to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic in their Young People’s Concerts, broadcast nationwide on CBS-TV. Much-honored, Watts has played before royalty in Europe and heads of government all over the world; was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1988; and at age 26, was the youngest person ever to receive an Honorary Doctorate from Yale University. Watts brings his elegant luster to Mozart’s first great Piano Concerto, No 9, the “Jeunehomme.”

When it comes to jazz and blues, New Orleans is the city that gave and then kept on giving. The musical breeding ground for such giants of traditional jazz as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton, The Big Easy also gave rise to a present-day giant, the pianist and singer Henry Butler – a super virtuoso and ebullient performer who embodies the buoyant spirit of his birthplace. Butler can play it all, from early to modern jazz, with plenty of New Orleans R&B peeking through.

Blinded by glaucoma as an infant, Butler began his musical studies early in life. After the release of “Fivin’ Around” in 1986, he quickly built an international reputation as an astonishing keyboard artist and a stylistically inclusive performer. If you liked last season’s Music Maker Blues Revue, you’ll love Butler’s solo performance; traditional New Orleans jazz is in the best of hands.

with poet and author in Personal Reflections of War: In Words and Music In a unique and timely program, the American String Quartet performs iconic pieces created in response to war, featuring Bach, Barber, Bartok and Shostakovich, in rotation with poems and short stories written and presented by National Book Award–winning author and US Marine veteran, Phil Klay and award-winning poet and war correspondent, Tom Sleigh. In this groundbreaking program, entitled “Personal Reflections of War: In Words and Music,” the artists will examine the effects of war on individuals– their hearts, minds and souls.

Internationally recognized as one of the world’s finest ensembles, the American String Quartet has spent decades honing the luxurious sound for which it is famous. The Quartet celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2014, and, in its years of touring, has performed in all fifty states and has appeared in the most important concert halls worldwide.

Vocalist and eight-time Grammy®-nominee Tierney Sutton has been recording for almost three decades. Fire is considered a metaphysical constant of the world. Its tale in our history is as long as the trails of smoke it exudes. Its impact on our figurative and literal landscape radiating into the past, present, and future.

2,000 Degrees: A Fire Odyssey is a three-dimensional exhibition that features whimsical hand-built ceramic sculptures by Japanese artist Kensuke Yamada and exquisite glass creations by Danville native Stephen Rolfe Powell, and highlights new collaborative pieces created by the artists specifically for this show.

“War is Only Half the Story” is the tenth-anniversary exhibition of The Aftermath Project, a non-profit, grant-making and educational organization that supports photographers documenting the aftermath of conflict. The exhibition highlights The Aftermath Project’s commitment to educating the public about the true cost of war and the real price of peace through visual storytelling that explores what it means for individuals to learn to live again, to cope with the lingering wounds of war, to rebuild lives and homes destroyed by conflict, to restore broken relationships and recreate civil societies.

Founder and director Sara Terry is a documentary photographer and filmmaker whose own practice has focused on postconflict societies. Her documentary, “Fambul Tok,” which grew out of her long-term still photography project about forgiveness traditions in post-conflict African countries, is about an unprecedented grassroots reconciliation program started by Sierra Leoneans to confront the atrocities of their 1991-2002 civil war, and to reintegrate perpetrators back into their communities.

Centre College DRAMA PROGRAM The Centre College drama program regularly produces exciting seasons of theatre that are highly regarded by both the community and college audiences. Plays are selected for their importance as dramatic literature, for their challenging nature, and, of course, for their entertainment value.

All shows are cast from the student body at–large—with the exception of an occasional guest artist. Tickets may be purchased at the Weisiger Theatre box office the night of a performance.

The Odd Couple, The Female Version

Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two Constanzuela brothers. But the hilarity remains the same.

November 9-12, 2017 Written by Caryl Churchill • Directed by Patrick Kagan-Moore This time-shifting comedy is both parody and spoof of the Victorian Empire and its rigid attitudes, especially toward sex. A marvelous send-up and a non-stop round-robin of sexual liaisons.

Twelfth Night

April 18-21, 2018 Written by William Shakespeare • Directed by Jennifer Goff The comedy centers on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola (who is disguised as a boy) falls in love with Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with the Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her thinking she is a man.

dANCe PrOgrAm Spring Dance Concert MAY 3, 2018 The annual Centre College Spring Dance Concert is a student-driven celebration of the diversity of dance and a culminating performance offered through the dance classes at Centre. Students have the opportunity to present their own choreography, as well as to work with regional guest choreographers in this entertaining and multi-faceted dance production.

This performance is free and open to the public.

The Norton Center is committed to engaging our campus, local, and regional communities in creative experiences, therefore these conversations often connect directly with academic classes, topics, and discussions already occurring throughout the campus and community. “The Soul of War”as part of The American String Quartet with Phil Klay and Tom Sleigh Phil Klay, author of the National Book Award book “Redeployment,” is a graduate of Dartmouth College and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in Iraq’s Anbar Province from January 2007 to February 2008 as a Public Affairs Officer. After being discharged he went to Hunter College and received an MFA. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Granta, Tin House, and elsewhere.

Klay, along with select members of The American String Quartet, will discuss literature, art, and the intersection and representation of war in each, alongside a moderator and other panelists. This participatory lecture breaks down stereotypes, uses ‘conscious comedy’, and engages audiences in new conversations about Race, Identity and Privilege. Using honest conversations, audiences will be given social tools to deconstruct interpersonal, as well as, institutional patterns of oppression, so as to heal and proactively address concerns as agents of change. For the 2017-2018 Matinee Series, A.C.T.S. is available in the following counties: Boyle, Burgin Independent Schools, Danville Independent School, Fayette, Garrard, Lincoln, Mercer, Marion, and Washington.

Public school teachers in these areas may apply to receive an $8 subsidy per ticket, making Norton Center Student Matinee ticket prices completely FREE.

The Kentucky Arts Council’s TranspARTation Grant Program Kentucky schools can apply for a FREE transportation subsidy to attend Norton Center student matinees through the Kentucky Arts Council TranspARTation Grant Program. This grant provides transportation funding to individual classrooms that apply. Grants are based on the mileage from the school to the performance venue and the number of buses necessary. Applications are reviewed quarterly.

Brokers & Scalpers

Due to the nature of the performing arts, all dates, programs, and artists are subject to change without notice. The views and opinions expressed by the artists may not necessarily be shared by the Norton Center for the Arts or Centre College.

Tickets to all performances at the Norton Center are available exclusively from the theatre’s own box office and website, http://www.nortoncenter.com. If you purchase tickets from a ticket broker, you may be paying a much higher price than necessary. Ticket brokers may make it appear that they have “special access” to the best seats, but all they do is purchase tickets from our box office and resell them to you at a markup.

Even when a broker is operating within the law, you still pay much more than you need to and not one penny of the markup goes to the artist or the theatre. If there is anything wrong with your order purchased from a broker, the Norton Center cannot help since you did not purchase the tickets directly from the theatre.

Tickets are released only when full payment is received. Refunds and exchanges are given only in the case of event cancellation.

Handling fees are not refundable.

If you cannot attend a performance, you may give your tickets to family, friends, or co-workers. Tickets can also be accepted as a donation to the Norton Center. In such cases, tickets must be returned no later than one hour prior to the performance to receive a statement for tax-deduction purposes.

Wheelchair seating for persons with disabilities and a companion are available for all shows on a first-come, first-served basis.
