Recover Energy-from-Waste.

Since 1995, Onondaga County has led the way with its progressive environmental and economic solutions for managing municipal solid waste. In rethinking what they do with regular household trash, the municipalities of Onondaga County adopted a renewable energy solution called Energy-from-Waste that helps power the County while helping the environment.

Annually, the Energy-from-Waste process saves approximately 350,000 tons of waste from our community from being landfilled while generating enough clean energy to power 32,000 homes and offset 350,000 tons of greenhouse gases.

On behalf of the entire staff and the Board of Directors, we welcome you to MACNY’s Annual Celebration of Manufacturing!

Each year we look forward to celebrating the manufacturing and business sectors’ achievements with all of you at our Annual Dinner. For the last two years we were unable to gather in person and needed to do so virtually, which makes me even more excited to be gathered together again this year. At our annual celebration, it is always truly gratifying to see and talk to so many passionate manufacturers and business leaders working together despite challenges. It makes what we do at MACNY so worthwhile.

This year has been one of incredible growth and achievement for MACNY, thanks to you, our consistently engaged and involved members. This has all occurred despite the challenges of the pandemic and an economic downturn and recovery.

Our advocacy efforts and engagement remain strong. We continue to be New York State’s most robust and effective voice for manufacturing on the State and Federal level. Our popular training and service offerings have seen a boost in both variety, participation, and delivery methods. In fact, we have had one our best years ever. Also, our Manufacturers Intermediary Apprenticeship Program continues to be successful with our state-wide Alliance partners and has been recognized nationally. These are just a few of our achievements in the past year and we will only continue to move forward with these into the future.

We are so excited to honor tonight’s Wall of Fame inductees. This year, we will formally recognize the 2020 and 2021 inductees. We are pleased to celebrate the lifetime achievements of Louis DeMent of Giovanni Foods, Kathleen Alaimo of Syracuse Label & Surround Printing, and Ross Berntson of Indium Corporation. Join us in celebrating the careers of these well-deserving manufacturing leaders that have helped shape our region’s manufacturing success.

We are also thrilled to be honoring our 2020 and 2021 Innovator of the Year Award recipients, Daniel Brown of SRC, Inc. and Tino Amodei of Armoured One. This award was created at the urging of our members, who were interested in nominating their peers and recognizing innovative individuals who are integral components to local manufacturing companies’ successes.

2020 INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR DANIEL BROWN, SRC, INC.

Daniel Brown of SRC, Inc. has been named MACNY’s 2020 Innovator of the Year. Brown was nominated by his coworker Chris Capraro for his innovative developments in machine learning and neuromorphic computing.

Recently, Dan helped transition state-of-the-art machine learning methods for detecting very small moving objects in infrared camera imagery for testing with SRC’s counter-UAS (C-UAS) technology. This is a tedious and fatiguing task for an operator. Dan’s contributions have already shown significant promise at several C-UAS exercises and may soon help warfighters in the field.

Dan was also able to configure and develop software for a very low-size, weight and power (SWaP) computational system on a chip from NVIDIA called a TX2. This computer hardware uses approximately 10-15W of power, is less than 7 inches square and 2 inches thick, and weighs about 3.5 lbs. Dan was able to decode the full video stream, perform machine learning for moving object detection, augment the video with target bounding boxes, and re-encode the video stream in real-time. This is a huge accomplishment and allows SRC to add critical, state-of-the-art machine learning to their existing C-UAS systems with minimal impact on SWaP.

Brown also recently developed, for the first time ever, parallel processing techniques for the neuromorphic True North system. At first, just a couple processors, then 16 and 32 - all working simultaneously. He processed synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery/ targets, tanks and trucks using the Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition (MSTAR) data for automatic target recognition, which he has briefed to military generals, congressmen and more.

In the nomination, Capraro stated, “Dan’s efforts have enabled innovation at SRC and led the way in a variety of ways. Dan has focused his technical work on developing advanced hardware and software technologies that continually contribute to the main and critical objectives of our bio-inspired and machine learning efforts.”

MACNY’s Innovator of the Year Award was created at the suggestion of MACNY members, as a way to nominate and recognize individuals within a company who consistently demonstrate forward thinking ideas in the areas of technology, innovation, and advancement of products and production.

2021 INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR TINO AMODEI, ARMOURED ONE

Tino Amodei, Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer of Armoured One, has been selected as the 2021 Innovator of the Year. Amodei was nominated by the team at Armoured One for his innovative developments in the security/safety film and glass industry.

Giambattista (Tino) Amodei co-founded Armoured One with Tom Czyz in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. Together, Tino and Tom immediately researched the industry of security/safety film and glass to create a better product that would save lives. Armoured One quickly gained attention from various SWAT teams that handle active shooter situations, and they began to work with the FBI to gather statistics to educate teachers and school resource officers on how to protect their schools.

Being the lead researcher and developer of all of Armoured One’s glass products has allowed Tino to break down barriers and set new standards in the shooter attack certified glass and film market. Fueled by his passion to save lives, Tino has led a team of chemists, active shooter experts, and glass and film experts to create the thinnest bullet resistant glass by creating a new interlayer that outperforms other companies in ballistics and blast applications. His ability to understand architectural needs and challenges paired with tactical obligations is the driving force behind Armoured One’s product development. His innovative approaches have allowed him to work with top brands such as Best Buy Mobile, U.S. Army, Lockheed Martin, not-for-profits, and major colleges and universities.

Soon after Armoured One’s inception, Tino, as Chief Technical Officer, challenged the UL standard for shooter attack glass and film. He continued to work with subject matter experts from the FBI, Homeland Security, police members, and SWAT teams to create the shooter attack testing classification that mimics a real school attack.

He worked dilligently to get his new standard nationally recognized. After years of hardwork, he succeeded and UL accepted the testing standard.

Tino’s commitment to innovation and his unrelenting motivation to protect others is an inspiration to us all,” stated MACNY President & CEO Randy Wolken.

MACNY 2021-2022 HIGHLIGHTS We thoroughly enjoy doing what has been one of our mottos for decades: “Helping manufacturers thrive.” With that, we are pleased to present to you our 2021-2022 Highlights, outlining the many accomplishments we have achieved for our members in the last year.

ADVOCACY From the start of budget conversations, we worked diligently to ensure that funding for our Manufacturers Intermediary Apprenticeship Program was included in the FY 2023 State Budget. We were successful in securing this funding, allowing us to sustain and grow this important program in partnership with our Manufacturers Alliance partners.

We would like to thank our Alliance partners, member companies, and partners at Ostroff Associates, who helped advocate for the continued funding of this critical program.

Though a zero-percent tax rate for pass-through manufacturers was not included in the final FY 2023 State Budget, we made progress this year. The legislation was included in the Assembly one-house budget, and we held numerous highlevel meetings with legislators and administration officials to reiterate the positive impact this rate would have on the thousands of small-to medium sized manufacturers in New York. We thank the bill sponsors: Senator Anna Kaplan, Chair of the Commerce and Economic Development Committee, and Assemblyman Al Stirpe, Chair of the Committee on Small Business. We will continue to build support for this issue.

Finally, we’ve continued to build upon our advocacy events year-round. We will be using our collective voice to promote what is needed for manufacturers in New York. We will continue our legislative webinars and speaker series with state and federal elected officials. Our popular Legislative Breakfast was back in person earlier this year, and we held a Virtual Manufacturing Advocacy Day. Dozens of our manufacturers from throughout the state participated in this advocacy event to advocate for pro-business policies and legislation with speakers to include the Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Senate Minority Leader Ortt.

TRAINING

COUNCILS

MACNY’s training offerings continue to be at the core of how we serve members and 2021-2022 has been another successful training year. Live2Lead 2021 was back in-person at the Lodge at Welch Allyn. This leadership retreat included speakers such as John Maxwell, Jamie Kern Lima, Ed Mylett, Valorie Burton, and Jeff Henderson.

MACNY has six active and growing councils which we are excited to continue virtually, in-person, and hybrid as we shift to meet member’s needs. These councils will kick off again starting in September and promise to host topics and presenters that you will not want to miss. Councils annually host over 25+ educational meetings, networking events, and/or tours and engage over 600 members each year.

This fiscal year has been our most successful training year ever and allowed us to expand our virtual and hybrid offerings, providing individuals with opportunities to grow and develop from wherever they are. In 2022-2023 we’ll see an expansion of our training offerings and the addition of new training partners. We look forward to seeing you in the coming year!

We have shifted from the virtual-only space, to some in-person and hybrid options, and we look forward to continuing in this new environment. INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP

MACNY’s Individual Membership initiative continues to be successful with over 450 employees of MACNY member companies taking advantage of the program. This unique offering allows individuals to take advantage of MACNY’s professional development opportunities. An Individual Member has access to all six of MACNY’s councils, discounts on most trainings, and the opportunity to take advantage of career-building and network-building opportunities.

ENERGY SOLUTIONS

HR SERVICES

MACNY continues to improve and expand the energy options available to our members. We are constantly reviewing new approaches to the benefits available and strive to respond to the changing energy landscape.

Our HR Department continues to serve as what we like to call an “extra arm of HR expertise” for our membership.

With that, our members consistently utilize our HR services to improve their internal operations, whether it is through surveys, HR-related compliance questions, or consulting.

As New York State plans for the future of its electricity network, renewable energy technologies have continued to improve by becoming more cost effective. MACNY has advocated on behalf of our members for programs and legislation that assist our members in adapting to the changing environment. Randy Wolken has recently been appointed as an advisor to the NYS Just Transition effort and will provide valuable guidance to the committee assuring that the manufacturing community is well represented. Our goal is for the electricity network to provide reliable energy at a reasonable and competitive cost.

MACNY continued its popular Electricity and Natural Gas Consortia for its 15th consecutive year; helping dozens of MACNY members pursue their preferred energy risk management strategies. New member-only benefits have been added to our electricity offerings. We have also added solar to give MACNY members a “green” option.

In 2019, our long-standing relationship with NYSERDA resulted in continued outreach to educate MACNY members and other manufacturing companies on the NYSERDA Programs available to them across Central New York to assist them with energy efficiency. MACNY is in continuing talks to extend and potentially expand our NYSERDA relationship.

KEEPING PEOPLE SAFE & FACTORIES RUNNING As factories cut back operations or shut down completely in Q1 of 2020, the need for a plan to remain open or to prepare to reopen safely was critical. Keeping People Safe and Factories Running is a program started by a group of visionary companies in Central New York. MACNY was tapped to coordinate the efforts and expand participation in this best-in-class program. To date, there are two cohorts of companies who have completed the program and a third in process. Our members have expressed sincere appreciation for the assistance they received, allowing them to affirm completion of their plan to the state. The effectiveness of the program is demonstrated in the metrics captured by the participants. In each case, the companies can show that the protocols they have implemented are keeping their employees, families, and communities safe. The success was recognized by The Association of Talent Development and awarded a CNY Best for the Talent Development Program 2021.

This year, the HR Department provided service and support to over 475 HR professionals throughout the state by way of hotline calls, surveys, e-connects, and through the MACNY-sponsored Healthcare Consortium.

We also provided HR professionals with learning events throughout the year on a variety of topics pertinent to HR compliance and needs including HR Breakfast Briefings and HR Council Events.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT MACNY is recognized as one of the State’s leading organizations addressing the skills gap and building career pathways in manufacturing. To date, we support 51 active apprentices with 64 local employers.

In April, we learned that MACNY, for the 5th consecutive year, received a $1.75 million appropriation in the State Budget to continue funding of the New York State Manufacturers Intermediary Apprenticeship Program.

This ongoing funding recognizes the continued support for the growth and expansion of apprenticeship by the NYS legislature. The funding allows MACNY to continue supporting apprentices in Central NY, North Country, Rochester, Buffalo, Southern Tier, Hudson Valley, Capital Region, and Long Island.

MACNY offers over 15 trades for our signatory companies and has signed its first Software Developer apprentice.

We are always working with employers on creating new trades to support their organizations by building a pipeline of talent and skilled workers.

MACNY is a named partner with the National Institute for Innovation and Technology (NIIT) in a contract awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor to expand the use of Registered Apprenticeships to provide better access to careers in strategic supply chains for all workers, especially underrepresented populations.

sectors decimated by COVID, i.e., retail and hospitality. We are integrating a new targeted recruiting and marketing campaign to create a bridge between job seekers and employers with open positions in advanced manufacturing and other high-tech fields.

MACNY Youth Apprenticeship Pilot Program MACNY has begun to work on its own youth apprenticeship pilot to grow and expand the Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program (FLYAP) model in Central NY. The program’s purpose is to formalize the bridge between candidates seeking skilled trade career opportunities and employers who offer Registered Apprenticeship Programs for which they need qualified workers. These candidates earn credit towards either the Related Technical Instruction (RTI) or the On-the-Job Training (OJT) (or both) portions of their NYSDOL apprenticeship programs while completing their high school education.

Operation Next: This program was awarded in January 2022, and is led by the Department of Defense. It serves transitioning military personnel, as well as their dependents, and prepares them for the most in-demand manufacturing jobs across the nation. Operation Next’s hybrid curriculum, allows participants to learn the theory online through simulations and multimedia and then demonstrate their new skills on real-world manufacturing equipment with regional employers in the during their last six months of military service. By leveraging the partnerships that already exist within MIAP, our goal is to move transitioning military and their dependents directly into apprenticeships and keep their talent in New York State.

Career and Talent Platform Job Board: We want to help take the time and expense out of talent acquisition to enable companies to focus on attracting the right talent and nurture the growth and development of their team. To help ease this process, we have launched our Career and Talent Platform to companies statewide.

This platform provides a seamless and simplified experience for hiring companies, applicants, candidates, and new hires. We have implemented a new platform with features that allow individuals to search and apply for jobs through text on their mobile devices.

PARTNERS FOR EDUCATION & BUSINESS (PEB) Through our affiliation with PEB, we connect organizations directly with students through career exploration activities.

From September to April, we impacted 1,527 students via 300 activities, utilizing the efforts of more than 100 local businesses. Activities included speakers, work-based learning challenges, job fairs, and industry tours.

Educational Partnerships PEB serves six P-TECH programs in the Auburn and Syracuse City School Districts (SCSD). These early college, high school programs allow students to earn a free associate’s degree in Mechanical and Electrical Technology, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, Computer Information Systems, Health Information Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Technology. The goal is for students to be job ready. This year, PEB and the SCSD hosted the first-ever Career & Technical Education Fair at OCC. Over 600 students were connected with 71 companies. PEB coordinates career exploration and readiness activities for programs that focus on STEM pathways, including Le Moyne College’s ERIE21 program, East-Syracuse Minoa High School’s Spartan Academy, and the Solvay School District.

Manufacturing Month Celebrated each October, Manufacturing Month helps to raise student awareness of careers within manufacturing.

CNY Innovation Challenge The CNY Innovation Challenge is a pitch competition where students develop marketable products or services.

This year, we partnered with the Maker Faire Syracuse to host the Innovation Challenge at OCC’s SRC Arena. Thank you to SRC for sponsoring this program.

CNY STEM Scholarship Program This has been a record year for the CNY STEM Scholarship program! SRC, King+King Architects, INFICON, TTM Technologies, Marquardt, Loretto, Novelis, and Cooper Lighting are investing $128,000 and offering 14 four-year college scholarships for students in Central New York. The STEM scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in Architecture, Automation Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nursing, Process Engineering, or Software Engineering.

2020 MANUFACTURERS WALL OF FAME KATHLEEN ALAIMO, SYRACUSE LABEL & SURROUND PRINTING

Kathleen Alaimo’s commitment to innovation, growth, strategic vision, and employee ownership with Syracuse Label & Surround Printing spans almost 40 years and has led the 100% employee-owned company to worldwide recognition within the label industry, expansion in both physical space and product offerings, and noteworthy employee development. Kathy has not only been instrumental to the growth of Syracuse Label & Surround Printing, but she is also described as being an inspiration to all who have had an opportunity to work alongside her.

With a bachelor’s degree in journalism and technology from the State University of New York at Morrisville and early career plans to become a journalist, Kathy fell into the label and tag industry by accident and has been loving it ever since. Rising to the role of President in 2007 in one of the world’s leading labeling companies seemed a remote possibility nearly 40 years ago when she first started at Syracuse Label & Surround Printing.

As a member of a small club of female presidents in her field, Alaimo counts many more achievements to her credit: she leads a company of 100+ employees at Syracuse Label & Surround Printing; she oversaw the expansion and relocation of the company in 2016; and led the company to win the “Best of the Best” award at the 2019 World Label Awards in Brussels, the first time that any company had won the best prize two years in a row.

Kathy is a very firm believer in lean manufacturing, and as such, it has become a central training and initiative focus for the company. She understands the importance of lean principles and wants to ensure that all production employees have the training they need

to be successful in lean manufacturing. These trainings develop the skillsets of the company’s current workforce and ensures everyone is moving forward in the same direction with the same language and principles.

While focusing on Syracuse Label & Surround Printing’s success through strategic planning and a commitment to lean manufacturing, Alaimo is also passionate about her community. Her staff is local and giving back is important to her and the whole team. Currently serving on the Vera House Foundation Board of Trustees and having assisted with the Ronald McDonald House annual gala for many years, Alaimo has also spearheaded the formation of Syracuse Label & Surround Printing’s charity committee to assist local charities as a group effort. In 2019 alone, the company participated in and/or supported 18 community service events in the greater Syracuse area.

Additionally, Kathy serves on the East Syracuse-Minoa School District’s School to College and Career Advisory Board and has been an active member of the Tag & Label Manufacturers Institute for 25 years. As the President of a 100% employee-owned company, Alaimo is a strong proponent of the employee-ownership business model and is a member of the National Center for Employee Ownership, as well as the Printing Industries Alliance.

Alaimo is an advocate for workforce development, STEM career exploration, and a member of the MACNY Board of Directors.

Louis DeMent’s dedication to family legacy, growth, employee engagement, and community has been life-long and has led Giovanni Food Co., Inc. to incredible successes including record sales, product expansion, new innovative capabilities, and incredible employee and facility growth. Lou is a strong believer in growth through innovation, while supporting his employees and serving as a positive role model.

Lou’s extensive tenure with Giovanni Food Company dates back to when he was just 13 years old; working alongside his dad during summer and school breaks in the business that his grandparents started back in 1934. After graduating from Le Moyne College with a BS in Business, a minor in Business Information Systems and a concentration in Marketing, Lou spent two years working in IT for Sysco Food Services before returning to Giovanni in 1997 and moving his way up in the company before taking over as owner and CEO when his father passed away in 2007.

After outgrowing its original home in Oswego with a single production line filling pasta sauce in cans and glass jars by 13 employees, Giovanni Food Company moved to Liverpool, then Syracuse, and eventually Baldwinsville where it has grown into a multi-line, 167,000 square foot facility with diverse capabilities to produce a large array of products including sauces, salsas, vinegar products, and more in a multitude of packaging options such as glass, PET, pouches, etc.

In 2019, Lou began the GIO Way campaign. GIO, standing for Growth, Integrity, and Optimization, is a reminder of the core values that Lou believes are most important, not only to the company, but to individuals.

He encourages individual growth within each of his employees, leads by example, and is always positive,

but never complacent. He holds quarterly meetings to share the company’s progress with everyone and to congratulate the many individuals who have made progress in their own arenas. He empowers his team to further optimize in their areas of expertise, or to try something new. He works on building partnerships with customers based on integrity, and encourages everyone to always do the right thing, even when no one is looking.

Lou’s passion for community is inspiring. He established the Giovanni Food Company’s Corporate Giving Committee, is a member of the Board of Trustees at Beacon Baptist Church, sits on the Board of Regents at Le Moyne College, and is a Board Member of both the Food Bank of CNY and the Private Label Manufacturers Association. Lou is also an active member, Board Member, and Learning Officer of the Young Presidents’ Organization. Lou also coaches Syracuse Blazers Hockey.

As President and Chief Operating Officer for Indium Corporation, Ross oversees global sales, marketing, technical support, operations, engineering, human resources, and product R&D. Indium Corporation is a premier materials refiner, smelter, manufacturer, and supplier to the global electronics, semiconductor, thinfilm, and thermal management markets with more than 1,000 employees worldwide. The company’s chemical and metallurgical products are used around the world — and off world—in missions to the moon and beyond, as well as in numerous other scientific research and commercial endeavors.

In support of this, the company’s sales, technical, R&D and support teams are committed to collaborating with customers on the challenges facing the industry and supporting customer product innovation. One of Ross’ high priorities has been investments in new tools and systems that anticipate the ever-increasing demands for electronics and semiconductor equipment. This includes a corporate commitment to support continuing growth in automotive electronics and autonomous vehicles through development of superior materials for increasingly powerful processors.

Ross sees each individual as playing an integral role in the company’s future and seeks to help employees define and achieve their full potential. With enthusiasm, he encourages teammates to turn uncertainty into opportunity.

With a career path in science, technology and business management, Ross’ trajectory at Indium Corporation began in 1996 as a Product Specialist. He quickly rose to Product Manager followed by Marketing Leader, Sales Leader, and Tech Support Leader. Most recently, he served as Executive Vice President and President of Indium Corporation’s Asia Holdings. This included living in Singapore for two years, learning much about the culture, regional business needs and opportunities in Southeast Asia and China.

Ross applies his expertise in materials science and technology to exploration of new niche markets and applications trends. Strategic expansion into numerous and diverse markets has also added to Indium Corporation’s stability and strength. He is a strong

Ross is an active member of numerous organizations, including IPC, iNEMI, International Microelectronics Assembly and Packaging Society, and the Surface Mount Technology Association. He is also an accomplished author and has presented at technical conferences globally. Ross holds a Master’s Degree in business administration, a Master of Arts Degree in education, and a Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry from Cornell University, where he earned the Henny Wittink Memorial Marketing Prize and the George C. Caldwell Prize.

Ross is active in several community boards, including the Leatherstocking Council Boy Scouts of America as an Executive Committee Member, United Way of the Mohawk Valley, and The Manufacturers Association of Central New York; and also serves as a trustee of the Hope Alliance Church.
