FROM OUR PASTORS

Rev. Thomas Smith

Rev. Rusty Crimm

Senior Pastor

Associate Pastor

Rev. Meg Bryce Jiunnies Pastor of Faith Formation & Discipleship

Dear Friends,

Friends,

Dear All,

I’m not sure when it happened, but somewhere along life’s road I have become an old man. As I've gotten older, I’ve become nostalgic for the past. I find myself saying various versions of “Things aren’t like they used to be” or “Remember when…”. The children I think of as being in elementary school are actually adults. To top it off, there is not a trace of brown left in my hair.

We spent the month of September talking about how we are one church, in one community, with one calling to follow Jesus by loving God and loving our neighbors. And a big part of this focus is to remind ourselves that living into this call is both difficult and simple. It’s difficult because loving people as Jesus loves is a high bar, and sometimes it’s a high bar for us to maintain our relationship with God.

Happy Autumn!

Nostalgia can be a tricky thing. The past is an indelible part of who we are. Who we are now is a sum of the experiences we’ve had up to the present. If you’re like me, it’s easy to keep your mind on a past you’ve idealized, but the past can serve as a blinder to where you’re going. Memory is great. Bygone times often lead to happy memories. But blessings also lie ahead. It can be easy to be cynical or pessimistic about the present and future, or to feel that it will never be like the good old days again. I can fall into that trap myself. In a recent moment of being snared in that particular trap, the words of Jeremiah 29:11 came to me, “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” Our Methodist theology teaches that God is constantly working in our lives and hearts, conforming us to the image of Christ. God loves us enough to accept us as we are, but God loves us so much that he offers to lead us forward, day by day, to new blessings and new opportunities to join Him in service to the world. None of us can tell the future, but we can be confident that whatever the future brings, God offers to lead us into new ways to experience God’s love and grace. Let’s just keep going. Yours in Christ,

Thomas

But it’s simple in that showing love to God and neighbor is as simple as donating candy for trunk or treat, donating a few dollars to our shoe drive for middle schoolers in Florence 1 Schools, or donating gently used men’s clothing to men who have previously been incarcerated. October and November will give you opportunities like these—and so many others —to put your call into action. The church needs money for the light bill and for copier toner, but the church also needs your time, your talents, and your energy. Any one of us can do good on our own, but when we join together that good increases exponentially. I hope that, as we enter the final quarter of 2026, you’ll consider the ways in which God is leading you in 2027. We have exciting plans on the horizon, made all the more exciting because we get to do the work together! Whether you’re looking for outreach opportunities, ways to serve inside the walls of church, or to actually join the membership of this community, Pastors Thomas, Meg, and I are all available anytime to help you discern where God is calling you. Grace and peace,

Rusty

Each season brings its blessings, but I feel so energetic when the heat starts to lose its punch and we actually enjoy being in the sun again! And, Central does have its rhythms, and this is the time of year where we all get excited to be part of the action! Yes, football, children’s sports, youth events, and such, but also, we seem to come back together more—and often what brings us together is that common purpose. We see it as preparing for the holidays, but truly it is simply being on the Christian journey together. As the weather cools, we recognize the importance of outreach ministries. We’re also eager to return to Bible studies, share experiences from our summer vacations, and keep up with the busy schedules of getting children from one place to another. Central has many groups of people doing many different things, but when we get a chance to celebrate being all together, please don’t miss it—things like the Church Picnic in the Park are not just fun, but a wonderful time of connection. We’re strong because of the many different personalities, spiritual gifts and interests, but we are connected because of our desire to follow Christ. If you need assistance finding your ministry call in this season, please contact me. There are so many wonderful opportunities to live into the joy that Christian life provides us!

Blessings,

Meg

CELEBRATION

SUNDAY OCTOBER 4, 2026

One Church • One Community • One Calling

THE BEGINNING OF

ONE CENTRAL

Celebration Sunday is not the finish line. It is the beginning of One Central—a yearround commitment to live as one church in one community with one calling: to follow Jesus by loving God and loving our neighbors. God has given each of us gifts—our time, abilities, resources, experiences, and service. When we offer those gifts together, God uses them to do far more than any one of us could do alone. Stay tuned as One Central continues throughout the year.

FOLLOW

THE STORY Throughout the One Central series, we have shared stories, daily Scripture reflections, and videos from our pastors and members on YouTube, Facebook, lnstagram, and TikTok. Visit our One Central page on our website to continue hearing how God is working through our church family.

www.centralmethodist.net/onecentral

MAKE YOUR COMMITMENT Commitment cards will be available starting Sunday, October 4. A card was also included in the One Central letter mailed to yur home. You may complete a card at any time by contacting the church office to submit your pledge.

Stewardship is more than an annual pledge card. It is how we care for what God has entrusted to us through our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness.

THIS IS NOT THE END. IT’S THE BEGINNING.

Happenings at CENTRAL UMC Phase One: Central’s New Directory We’re beginning work on a new printed pictorial directory! Please review the draft directory and make any corrections directly beside your name. Write “REMOVE” beside any information you don’t want included—or beside your name if you prefer not to be listed. If your name is missing, please add your information to the sheet in the binder’s front pocket. No action is needed if everything is correct. Photo information will be shared during the next phase. Thank you for helping us keep Central’s directory complete and accurate!

Third Grade Bible Presentation Central’s Third Graders received their very own Bibles during worship in the sanctuary on September 27. Later that afternoon, they gathered for “Bible Ed with the Pastors,” a special time to help them learn more about their new Bibles and how to use them. Congratulations to Mary Marchant Burdette, Sellers Gettys, Sullivan Motte, Margaret O’Shea, and Jackson Tabor.

Blood Drive Central would like to thank everyone who participated in our August Blood Drive, making it the most successful blood drive of the year. We exceeded our goal of 33 units with a total of 41 units of lifesaving blood! Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible. Our October Drive will take place on Thursday, October 22. However, there will be a time change from our usual hours. The drive will end early at 6PM, with the last appointment being at 5:45 PM. We are still accepting walk ins, but ask that you please arrive prior to 4:00 PM. Thank you to everyone who helps make our drives a success!

ONE CHURCH. ONE COMMUNITY. ONE CALLING.

UMYF Movie Night On September 27, the Youth of Central had their very own outdoor movie night. Be sure to check out the Youth section of Under the Dome for even more great events for the Youth of Central UMC!

Radical Hospitality Members of Central’s hospitality teams learned from Rev. Robby Lybrand the theology behind church hospitality, as well as some practical ways we can show Christ’s love to our community any time they come through our doors.

Join us for some fall fun at Langston Ranch on Sunday, November 8 from 2:00–5:00 PM! Bring the whole family for an afternoon of fellowship and fun with our CUMC friends! There will be plenty for the kids to enjoy, including a pumpkin patch, petting zoo, jungle gyms and slides, horseback rides, and more. This is a family event, so parents and caregivers are invited to stay, enjoy the afternoon, and make some fun fall memories with us!

Our children in 3K-5th grades will help lead us in worship, giving them an opportunity to grow in faith, confidence, and leadership while learning more about what it means to be a disciple of Christ and an active part of our church family.

Langston Ranch is located at 3603 Union School Road in Coward, SC 29530 and is about a thirty-minute drive from Florence. There is no cost for event entry. There are pumpkins, drinks, and food that may be purchased individually.

Welcome Wigglers

Welcome Wigglers is a special program designed just for our 3K and 4K children! During the month of October, they will have the opportunity to visit each of our church services, spend time with our pastors, and learn more about worship in The Well, The Chapel, and The Sanctuary. Welcome Wigglers takes place during the Sunday School hour at 10:00 AM. Parents can drop children off as usual in Room 145, and we’ll take them from there! We’re excited to help our youngest children become more familiar and comfortable with worship at Central!
