Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost (Green)
Prayer Focus: Those Impacted by Hurricane Helene
Welcome to worship at Central!
In the name of Jesus Christ, welcome to worship at Central where it is our mission to follow Jesus by loving God and loving our neighbors. Our clergy, Rev. Thomas Smith, Rev. Dr. Ann Kovan, and Rev. Meg Jiunnies, are grateful you’ve chosen to make Central a part of your day today. We have prayed for you and planned for you, and we hope you have a meaningful worship experience. Whether it’s your first time with us or you’re a lifelong member, we welcome any opportunity to speak with you about how to connect with God through Central. If it is your first time worshiping with us, please visit the rear Greeters Table and fill out a Connect Card where you will receive a gift from the church. Once again, welcome!
Sermon Series: Do Unto Others
Our world seems to be consumed with division–often typified in the colors red and blue. Rather than stay in our monochromatic silos, the Golden Rule in scripture challenges us to seek to create whatever common good we can with our relatives, friends, and neighbors whom we might consider to be on the “other side.” As we attempt to come together, the idea is not that we are obliterating either one or trying to change each other, but rather, we discover the beauty that can be created when we work together to make the world a better place. The “purple space” is where we cultivate kindness, compassion, humility, respect, and love for one another and the good of all the world, no matter what.
Sermon Note
Did you know that over 99% of our DNA is the same from one human to another? This surely makes us kin. The word kindness originally developed from a root word that meant “family” or “with the feeling of relatives for each other.” We begin this series considering the implications of spending so much of our time feeling estranged from, and resentful toward, those whose less than 1% moves them in a different direction from us. And we begin to dream of finding a “purple space” in which to exchange goodness.

Connect & Refresh
(Offering one another signs of reconciliation and love within worship is an ancient Christian practice. This is a time to greet others, both familiar and new, whether in your seat, at a table, or while refilling your cup and plate. The countdown on the screen will alert you when it’s time to return to your seats for the next act of worship )
