My grandma taught me a long time ago the difference between a “want” and a “need.” When I talked about a pending purchase, she’d ask, “Do you want it or need it?” She was ok with whatever the answer was but was teaching me the difference. Over the years, I’ve heard people use “want” and “need” interchangeably. It’s easy to do; I’m guilty, myself. However, consider the differences.
When it comes to your dairy herd’s health and reproduction, what do you “want”? It’s probably safe to say you want trouble-free fresh cows; a low somatic cell count (SCC); live, healthy calves; and people and tools you can rely on to lighten the load. Consider what other things you want for your dairy, and then what you need to do to make it reality.
Inside these pages, you’ll see impressive stats: 47% pregnancy rate; 7.6 pounds combined fat and protein; 43,000 SCC; and 42,198 Energy Corrected Milk (ECM). How did farms get to these levels? Chances are they set out wanting something, like low tools and actions.
Consider what you “want” for your dairy, and what you “need” to do to achieve it. Do you want to reduce the labor it takes to get cows bred, improve reproductive ® is effective in all those areas. Scan the QR code to the right to hear how Augustian Farms, LLC, Kewaunee, Wis., is using CowManager to achieve what they want. Maybe you want to reduce SCC. What do you need to do to make that happen? Routine DHI testing, including the Mastitis PCR test, gets you started in many of the things you need to do to accomplish that. Pages 16p, 18p, and others are loaded with information about needed testing and tools to reach your goal. Perhaps, you want to have the right number of heifers calving each month, without cutting yourself short. See page 15 for actions you need to take.
Along with that, learn what CentralStar’s ReproStar Award winners need to do you peruse the list of top DHI herds, consider what actions they need to consistently implement in an effort to reach and continue these levels.

“Mark epitomizes the word pioneer in our cooperative,” shared CentralStar Board of Directors President Paul Trierweiler. “He helped blaze the way for CentralStar to provide DHI Services, helping us become the fastest-growing National DHIA (NDHIA)
Integrated Services, he implemented a team structure which enabled integration of all the cooperative offers to better serve our farmers and owners.”
Mark’s roots in the industry run deep, growing up in northern Indiana working on his uncle’s dairy farm. Mark began his career early, as a relief DHI and A.I. technician, and he continued in those roles while attending Purdue University, West Lafayette,
Agricultural Short Course. Mark’s career after college included a variety of experiences.
It’s Mark’s genuine care and dedication to friends, family, team members, and the cooperative that are most valued.
In 2000, after years of planning by the Board of Directors to diversify the cooperative, NorthStar-Select Sires, Michigan DHIA, and Fox Valley DHIA merged, creating NorthStar Cooperative. Around this time, the Select Sires Federation purchased Sire Power, where Mark was the Eastern Regional Sales Manager, opening the door for him to join the cooperative and become the inaugural Director of DHI Services.
Mark led the cooperative’s DHI Services for nine years, growing it from 1,000 herds representing 135,000 cows, to 1,350 herds with more than 285,000 cows. During this time, Mark facilitated mergers with Chippewa County DHI and Elkhart County DHI,
services, Mark was responsible for leading the DHI Specialist team, which doubled in size. Additionally, he oversaw two milk-
processing labs, which expanded to include diagnostic-testing services.
As the cooperative’s offerings grew, so did the need for a leader to focus on integrating the various business areas. In January 2009, Mark was named Director of Integrated Services. In this role, Mark was charged with creating teams to better serve owners and customers. Mark’s efforts in this area were instrumental in setting up the cooperative for a more sustainable future.
Never one to rest, Mark became General Manager and Executive Vice President of the Cooperative in 2015. With the merger between East Central/Select Sires and NorthStar Cooperative CentralStar, a role he held until retirement in 2020.
A servant leader, Mark was often asked to serve in various capacities with other organizations. Mark was a member of the NDHIA Board of Directors for six years, during which he
Manager ever elected President of the 45-year-old organization. Mark’s contributions to NDHIA were recognized when he was awarded the NDHIA Outstanding Service Award in 2022.
Along with his involvement at NDHIA, Mark served as Dairy Industry Advisor for the Michigan State University Dairy Club, a member of the Dairy Data Working Group as appointed by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding, and North American DHI Representative to the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR) Metering Devices Sub-Committee. He also served as co-chair of the Planning Committee for the Niagara Falls ICAR meetings and was a member of the Executive Committee for the Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference for seven years. Mark has been an active member of both the Michigan and national Holstein and Jersey associations, volunteering his time and talents for shows and conventions.
“Mark’s contributions to CentralStar are many,” said Paul “however, it’s his genuine care and dedication to friends, family, team members, and the cooperative that are most valued. We are blessed to have had Mark as a leader, and the Board is honored to recognize him with the 2022 Pioneer Award.”

While the data reflects each dairy’s success, it is the unique approach each one takes that proves most interesting. Even still,
Increasing the number of mature cows. Commodity prices and the cost of raising forages continues to force the cost of replacement heifers up. To counteract this, herds are milking a higher percentage of older cows. This decreases the number
of replacement heifers needed, while increasing pounds of milk
vital to lowering cull rate, thus replacement needs.
Properly-managed heifers tend to have very high fertility rates; however, frequently there are opportunities to gain by breeding in a more timely manner. Lack of labor, adequate facilities, and other variables quickly drive up the number of days on feed, which challenges is using CowManager™.

A commitment to healthy, well-grown calves; a passionate A.I. Specialist, along with excellent communication and teamwork are at the backbone of Towns Farms, Inc. reaching a 47% pregnancy rate in their heifer herd. “We strive for healthy well-grown heifers, so they are ready to breed when it is time,” shared Pat Towns, co-owner of Towns Farms, Inc. “Then we turn it over to Marley (Malkow, CentralStar A.I. Specialist) who is extremely passionate about her job and does a great job getting heifers bred.”
Janesville, Wis.
Starting with calf health, the Towns’ use an accelerated-feeding program to help ensure calves have a long, productive life. Identifying calf-health challenges early and using supportive therapy, instead of antibiotics, is the preferred approach. Heifers are raised on-site, up to six months of age, and are then moved to a heifer grower. Heifers are bred off natural heat, performed monthly, with ultrasound at 30 days carried calf.
balance receiving conventional semen. Evaluation of the dam’s combined fat and protein (CFP), along with the Parent Average Net Merit (NM$) of the heifer, are the parameters used to determine the top 25% of the heifer herd. Conventional semen is used for all repeat breeding. The bottom 20% of heifers, and any over three services are bred to beef.
“Opening up the line of communication and being able to streamline data has helped eliminate problem heifers and has created more uniformity in calving,” shared Marley. “If a heifer has been in the breeding pen for a month without any estrus activity, she is palpated to identify the best course of action. If a CL is present, Lutalyse® is administered; if large follicles
ovaries are static, they are enrolled in a 5-day CIDRsynch program.”
“Marley is very conscientious and willing to go the extra mile to make sure our heifers are ready to breed,” said Mark. “She has a good eye for healthy cattle and a great understanding of the reproductive system of cattle.”

Holstein herd. “This past year we changed synchronization protocols and that had a big impact,” shared owner, Mark Steffes. Meeting with their veterinarian, as well as CentralStar team members, Reproductive Consultant Scott Hecker and A.I. Specialist Kurt Barnes, the decision was made to move from Ovsynch to a Presynch-Ovsynch program.
The reproductive program starts with a 72-day voluntary waiting period (VWP). Along with the synchronization program, Kurt and A.I. Specialist Aaron McMillan provide tail-chalk and breeding services daily. Pregnancy checks are performed at 29, 60 and 175 days in milk during routine herd checks. Open cows with a CL are administered Lutalyse so they can be bred again the same week.
A couple years ago, Hillside Dairy implemented a timed-A.I. program and really started to see major improvements in the reproduction program,” recalled Scott. “But even still, we knew we could do better, so we added Presynch to the protocol. The dairy has also completed a new calf barn in the past year which is improving non-completion reproduction program, we know we will.”
“Putting up good-quality feed helps with the breeding program,” stated Mark. Along with that Hillside Dairy’s genetic selection includes fertility traits, with a primary emphasis on high CFP. The dairy uses nearly 100% conventional dairy semen, with sexed semen used only on elite cows.
“We have a strong belief in the people responsible the synchronization program, but when you are committed to the process and see the results it Hillside Dairy LLC is owned by Mark and Missy Steffes.
“The most important contributor to our program’s success is having healthy cows on a good diet,” said Katelyn Packard, co-owner of entire program. We’ve increased conception by 15% because we catch cows in heat sooner and know when the best time is to breed.”
In September 2020, Horning Farms transitioned from a mostly-timed A.I. program to one that includes CowManager and timed A.I. “All cows are enrolled in a Presynch -11 Ovsynch program and the number of cows that complete this program has been drastically reduced because of CowManager,” said Katelyn. Breeding is performed most often twice a day, however Katelyn noted, “CowManager gives us the information and flexibility to breed at different times
during bi-weekly herd checks at 31 and 85 days. Cows with a CL are enrolled in Ovsynch and those without a CL present are enrolled in GGPG. The GGPG protocol (GnRH – 7 days – GnRH – 7 days – Prostaglandin – 2 days – GnRH – 1 day – breed A.I. ) is a strategy to improve conception rates, particularly in low-progesterone or non-cycling cows. When cows reach 190-200 days in milk with four services, they are marked do not breed (DNB).
The Horning’s focus on healthy cows transcends to their genetic selections. “Considering health traits is a bigger part of our selection,” (DWP$® traits.” Additionally, they use the CowManager Health module to manage the herd’s health. “The health module has changed the way we manage the herd,” shared Katelyn.
“We used to check fresh cows weekly. It was a long process that took a couple people. With CowManager, we can be targeted in our approach of monitoring and treating animals. It saves us time and disrupts the cows less.”
Farms is a sixth-generation
The adage, one thing leads to another, sums up how the Kenealy Dairy Farms herd reached 40% pregnancy rate this year. According to owner, Jeff Kenealy, “We watch our conception and pregnancy rates, but weren’t really trying to get to this level. We haven’t changed anything in the past two years, but by doing as many things right and consistent, including putting up high-quality forages, the cows proved they could do it.”
Cadott, Wis.
The breeding program at Kenealy Dairy Farms starts with an 83-day VWP. “Four years ago we had a 70-day VWP and we weren’t getting a full 305-day lactation,” recalled Jeff. “We pushed it back to get more peak milk, and our rolling herd average (RHA) went up. Pushing it out even further is something we’ve talked about with Neil (Estes, CentralStar A.I. Specialist) and our vet, but I’m not sure, yet, about doing that.”

“Staying on track, and on time with shots is important, but having a really good technician makes it all work,” said Jeff. “Neil’s attention to detail and love for cattle makes him really good at what he does.”

Genetic selection that includes health and fertility traits is one of the “things” that helps get to these levels. Working with CentralStar consultants, Jeff uses Productive Life (PL) as a primary-selection driver. “We’re using the bulls that are better for fertility and that shows in the cows and their offspring,”
So, what’s the next “thing” that may lead to another at Kenealy Dairy? “We won 50 free CowManager tags three years ago and we’ve decided to tag the rest of the herd,” said Jeff. “It’s another set of eyes that monitor the herd 24 hours a day and lets us pick up sick cows sooner.”
Kenealy Dairy Farm is owned by Jeff and Trista Kenealy. Jeff’s co-owner and father, the late John Kenealy, was an integral part of the farm’s success. They continue on in his memory.
All the little things make big things happen. That is a sentiment that the Jauquet Hillview Dairy team practices, and one that has helped them reach a 42% pregnancy rate. “There are many contributors that go into hitting high production, high conception and pregnancy,
The reproduction program at the 675-cow herd starts with a 78-day VWP after which all cows are enrolled in a Presynch-Ovsynch program. The synchronization schedule is setup uniquely for the age of animal and pen they are in, with mature cows being bred at 2 a.m. and younger cows at 3 a.m. Early morning-breeding times were established to optimize results during the summer months, and remain throughout the year.

Strategic use of sexed and beef semen, along with sexing at pregnancy check help the dairy manage inventory levels. “Our goal is to deliver 20 Holstein heifer calves each month,” said David. “Now we work with Laura (Styczynski, CentralStar Records Analysis Consultant) and use parent average to project the value of calves in utero. This allows us to keep the best heifers for our herd.”

Luxemburg, Wis.“It takes a team,” said co-owner, Jeremy Natzke, when asked how the dairy has achieved a 40% pregnancy rate. “From the team who cares for the calves, to the one that ensures shot compliance, as well as the veterinarian, and the breeding team, it takes all of us working together to get these girls pregnant.”
The reproduction program at Wayside Dairy has changed considerably in the past two years. Previously the entire program rested on timed A.I. with once-a-week breeding. In August, 2020, CowManager was installed, and the program changed to a combination of timed A.I. and CowManager, with daily breeding by CentralStar A.I. Specialist Garrett Carnahan. A total of three pregnancy checks are performed. The
“Because of CowManager we have more pregnant cows,” said Jeremy. “Relying on CowManager to tell us the best time to breed, instead of interpreting tail chalk, has taken the guesswork out of it. It has also improved how quickly we catch cows that need to be rebred. We are now rebreeding cows between 17-23 days, compared to previously at 32 days after pregnancy check.”

CentralStar A.I. Specialist Brandon Klein walks pens, chalks, and breeds cows, daily. Initial pregnancy checks are conducted at 28 days carried calf, with all cows receiving GnRH one week prior. Open cows are resynched according to ovarian structure. Subsequent pregnancy checks are performed at 50 and 150 days.

“Protocols are designed and followed to maximize reproduction and successful. They continually evaluate and implement new ideas and technology for continual improvement.”
Growing up on a 60-cow dairy, I remember being ecstatic if we had a run of three or four heifer calves in a row. But times have changed. Historically, the main goal of reproduction was to create a replacement heifer. Today, that goal has shifted to create a fresh cow; the calf, or at least many of them, are simply the byproduct. Producers are now focused on intentionally reducing the number of heifer calves being produced and raised. So how did we get here, and more importantly, what is the right number of heifers to raise?
The backstory on what led the industry to this point is long, complex, and full of boring math. But ultimately, it boils down to three main areas.
1. in the post-rBST era. We are now making more calves from the same number of cows, in a shorter period.
2.The industry is now very good at making pregnancies; therefore, we have leveraged sexed semen by using the most elite genetics to accelerate genetic progress. It’s a great asset that resulted in more total females than needed.
3.Calf mortality rates have plummeted in the last ten years because of advances in calf rearing. Meaning, more of the heifer calves born make it to adulthood.
These are all great problems to have, but now it’s time to adjust. So, how many calves does your dairy need? The quick answer is around 85% of the lactating herd. The right answer though is, “it depends.” There are
to make accurate and precise predictions, they all need to be accounted for.
First, we must determine the number of replacements you need to join the milking string each year. This is primarily dictated by the cull rate. The cull rate is the number of cows that were sold or died in 12 months divided by the number of calvings in 12 months. The number of cows sold and died each month is the number of fresh heifers needed each month.
The number of fresh heifers needed, plus your non-completion rate, is the number of
calves you need to raise. The non-completion rate is the number of heifer calves that are born alive, but never make it to the milking string.
All these calculations require data. The accuracy and precision of your data dictates how accurate and precise the calculations we make are regarding your inventory and the breeding strategy. The more accurate your data, the tighter we can keep the margins. All this leads back to my original answer regarding how many heifers you need; "it depends."
Heifers are wildly expensive to raise, and mature cows turn pounds of milk a cow produces goes toward recuperating rearing costs, meaning none of the two-year-olds in your herd
85% of the cow population, you are at risk of driving up your cull the herd. Furthermore, you have added rearing costs in raising a bloated inventory of heifers.
You can do your own math using the heifer-inventory worksheet completion rate >15%; actual heifer inventory >110% of needed heifer inventory, or you are planning to change herd size, talk with your CentralStar team. CentralStar consultants work with hundreds of farms to help them best manage heifer inventories, while creating a strategy to maximize genetic progress and
The data here is a snapshot of the CentralStar DHI herd. While interesting to see what is achievable, a more valuable approach is to generate KPI comparisons for your dairy using factors such as geography, herd size and breed, before drawing any conclusions.
CentralStar professionals can help make sense of the numbers and help you with your herd’s KPIs, as well as a path to achieving your goals. If you would like help, ask a CentralStar team member.

reproduction as measured by a 21-day pregnancy rate has been on the rise, and you don’t need to look further than the winners of CentralStar’s ReproStar Award for proof. Congratulations to these herds! Clearly, they have dialed in many aspects of their operation,
you to consider if the next pursuit for you and your management team has anything to do with pregnancy rate at all? Rather, is it more appropriate to apply the same intensity, effort, and investment to other key areas of your operation.
If shipping at least 7.5 pounds of solids per cow is your goal, and it should be, you aren’t going to do it without dialing in your forages. The growing, harvesting, and storage of forages paints the backdrop for much of what will transpire as you navigate the year. If you do this right, you’ve gone a long way to making life easier for yourself, your cows, and your employees.
know its impact on the dairy is pervasive, and everything from production to attitudes improve when hard work pays off. While it’s exciting to watch pregnancy rates climb higher and higher, it’s also important to remember the law of diminishing returns starts to take a toll.
Figure 1 demonstrates how the return for pregnancy-rate improvement declines as pregnancy rates increase. Beginning with a steep ascent when pregnancy rates are low, the curve starts to flatten out as farms push past 30%.
Unlike today, pregnancy rates approaching 40% were rare 20 years rate, from a business perspective there must be a point at which additional investment of time and money makes poor economic sense. If you have achieved the kind of reproductive success I’m talking about, I congratulate you and your team. I also challenge
Our harvest capacity is huge, allowing for amazing speed when chopping, hauling, and storing forages. The proverbial doubleedged sword exists here when you consider the speed that allows us to cover hundreds of acres a day can mean small details are missed. Details like proper chop length or kernel processing (KP), which can result in a giant pile of headaches. Speed and volume should be secondary to quality. It is unfortunate, but true that
down. What does hitting a “40% pregnancy rate” in forages look like … well, processed, highly-digestible feed, happy cows, less purchased feed, and more solids shipped.
If your annual SCC average isn’t under 100,000, it should be. Like reproduction, SCC is one of those areas in which every operation wants improvement, but rarely gets there without being prioritized.
it’s not my purpose to argue those here. Rather, I wish to pose the question: If you’re knocking on the door of a high pregnancy rate, can you apply the same effort and energy to something as important as SCC? Consider if it’s more valuable to continue to improve pregnancy rate, or to reduce SCC and minimize the cases of clinical mastitis -- which by the way, has a positive impact on reproduction all on its own.
You must think ahead if you want to get ahead. Healthy, troublefree cows are their own reward from a management perspective, industry can be proud to tell. Reducing lameness or eradicating known diseases is within our grasp due to new monitoring and surveillance technology. Things that weren’t possible to do in decades past are now only needing focus and investment.
Today, it might be hard to pencil the return when considering the but forward thinkers make decisions using information that is there is no trail to follow which brings an element of risk. Consider what is the general trajectory of the industry? What are growing
Doug Moyer, Integrated Dairy SolutionsIf you've prioritized reproductive improvement and found success, is capable of executing. If further improvement cost nothing, I wouldn’t argue the point, but it does have a cost. At a minimum, there is opportunity cost involved in everything we do. If you’ve achieved a high pregnancy rate, it’s time to ask, what’s next? Is the
level you are at enough, or should you look to repeat the process in another aspect of the dairy? Am I talking nonsense? I’d love to buy you a cup of coffee and debate that; I love nothing more than good coffee and good conversation.

Bovikalc® Dry maintains comfort by reducing pressure during dry off.
Dry off is often an uncomfortable and stressful period due to large amounts of milk that remain in the udder. Thankfully, there’s a new way to dry off your cows comfortably: BOVIKALC Dry. It helps reduce udder engorgement and pressure, which helps reduce discomfort and improves animal well-being. Learn more at BovikalcDry.com.

transfer of passive immunity, stated as 10 grams of IgG per liter of serum, 24-36 hours post colostrum feeding. This standard has been raised.
A recent publication citing transfer of passive immunity data1 and subsequent morbidity and mortality, demonstrated that calves achieving higher levels of IgG transfer, demonstrated
in achieving higher levels of transfer of passive immunity. Additionally, considerable lifetime calf health and production advantages can be achieved by achieving high good to excellent levels of serum IgG (20-25 grams of IgG/Liter of calf serum, 24 hours post colostrum feeding).
Study results of 2,360 calves at 103 operations demonstrated a larger percentage of calves remain healthier when they receive excellent standard quality colostrum; increasing lifetime calf health for replacement heifers and beef x dairy calves. 60

A 4,200-cow herd was regularly supplementing DTX with very good results. Despite the overall good performance of the herd, the decision was made to remove DTX from the lactating cow diet. For a period of 180 days conception, reproduction and milk production was monitored.
Conception and pregnancy rates (Figure 1) and milk production (Figure 2) all declined over the next 90 and 180 days after cows stopped receiving Select DTX. Supplementing DTX enhances the cow’s natural defense mechanisms for self-protection from suggests cows receiving DTX may have stronger immune systems to appropriately respond to immune challenges and to resolve inflammation, thereby being and reproductive success.

This trial was conducted on an approximately 3,000head milking Holstein dairy farm located in northeast Wisconsin. Barns were either sprayed or tunnel ventilated to reduce fly density. Horizontal transfer via blood was minimized through use of pulse guns for injections, single-use palpation sleeves, paste for dehorning, and sterilization of foot-trimming equipment at the end of each day. All cows were bred
their dam’s colostrum.
5%
1.2% n = total number of cows tested in year.
Three diagnostic tests were used: lymphocyte count (LC), ELISA for BLV antibodies, and proviral load (PVL) as determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Test results were used to determine culling and pen assignments for cows most likely to transmit BLV or develop disease.
Data was compiled and summarized on a quarterly basis throughout the remainder of the study to monitor BLV reduction progress. Screening animals via LC appeared to be effective initially for identifying advanced lymphocytotic antibody testing with follow-up PVL testing. Combined, this method of segregating and eventually culling cattle with the highest LC at the beginning of the study and the highest PVL at the end of the study resulted in a marked reduction of measures of BLV infection.
