introduction

The Central Highlands has a vibrant and resilient economy based on:

A $5 billion output-generated global coal mining industry with 13 active mines and continuing expansions and developments.

An emerging solar and green energy industry with two operational solar farms, one under development and a further nine proposed across the region.

Robust agricultural and horticultural industries worth more than $1 billion to the region, including beef, grain, cotton, grapes, melons and citrus, supported by irrigation from water storage on the Nogoa and Comet Rivers.

A growing tourism market worth more than $235 million, featuring pristine natural attractions of sandstone wilderness across 749,000 ha of world-class natural parks and the largest gem fields in the Southern Hemisphere.

Major health and education services including both private and public primary and secondary schooling, hospitals, Emerald Medical Village and a CQUniversity campus.

A vast array of innovative and dynamic small to medium enterprises and a strong not-for-profit sector, supported by professional and government sectors.

With local exports worth more than $5.7 billion and a steady availability of commercial, residential and industrial land, supported by experienced, supply-chain ready businesses, the Central Highlands is more than you expect.

We respect and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders past, present and future. We acknowledge the stories, traditions and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on this land within the Central Highlands region and commit to building a brighter future together.
