emerald art gallery
The Emerald Art Gallery regularly showcases local artists and travelling exhibitions. Located at the Council offices, the gallery is open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.00pm.

Margaret Worthington ‘Because I know that time is always time And place is always and only place And what is actual is actual only for one time And only for one place’ T.S. Elliot Emerald’s past, present and future are represented by three 4.6-metre-high plinths standing proudly outside the Council offices. Their shape is based on local road and flood markers. The artist has used a variety of words, images and patterns to give viewers a sense of place and connection with the region. Coal from Crinum mine was mixed into the black paint.

hands on the wall
Hands on the Wall features the handprints of 96 residents who were recognised for their contribution to the community. The use of hands was influenced by Aboriginal art to symbolise belonging.

nogoa river Economies
The two bronze inlayed artworks each feature seven interlocking designs and are based on winning concepts from a school art competition. They represent the surrounding landscape including the meandering Nogoa River, country townships, prosperous agricultural and mining industries and the mighty Fairbairn Dam.

the meeting place
Charmaine McKeon-Parlett and Scott Maxwell The artwork features four mosaic portals, representing the Kylbung, Kurra-Kurra, Coca-Ea-Berra and DingGel-Burra peoples who are sub-tribes of the Kairi area. Their pathways join at the centrepiece, the Kairi nation, which is their meeting place and has ties to the Dreamtime. The carved wooden totems which swirl skywards are contemplation seats and form Mundaguda, the big Rainbow Serpent. The stamped footprints in the pathways are cast from local children.

Sharon Gimbert, Helen Godden, Peg Phelps, Emerald Art Group and Emerald Textile Group A focal point in the Emerald library is a commemorative quilt that celebrates the region’s townships, landmarks, waterways and history. The quilt was created through a project aimed at social and emotional healing after the 2010/11 floods. Smaller quilts are located in regional libraries. Explore More of the library precinct, including the aerosol mural in the community garden and mosaic tables in the park.
Emma Sloan and Scott Maxwell Designed by a local engineer, the contemporary stainless-steel structure represents the Fairbairn Dam spillway. It illustrates water flowing through the dam’s iconic pillars. The sculpture has a dual interpretation, also representing the teeth of a dragline bucket. The surrounding landscaping, including wavy lines of rocks, represents the region’s rich coal and sapphire seams. Satellite imagery was used to ensure the northeasterly angle of the artwork is the exact angle of the Fairbairn Dam wall.

reggae Street art
Bill and Luke Gannon The Anzac Mural along Anakie Street honours all those who have served. Featured is the World War I troop train, which travelled from Winton to Brisbane, signing up recruits. The mural also captures the Anzac spirit of comradeship with the iconic image of a young digger carrying his wounded mate. Located in the Town Hall forecourt is ‘Digger’, a bronze relief erected in honour of the Centenary of Anzac (1915 – 2015). Mattybro Art The reggae inspired piece pays homage to artists Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, Alpha Blondy and Foni. It also features the Tongan crest and flag, bringing a piece of Tongan culture to the community. Emerald has a large Tongan community, many working at local horticultural farms.
