We’re reminded of the profound beauty surrounding us as we welcome our arts, culture, and dining issue. I’m reminded of my own journey with the arts. It began in second grade when my mother enrolled me in ballet classes at my elementary school. I recall my frustration when my dance teacher Ms. Ira constantly urged me to point my toes. I told her and my mom that I couldn’t do it.
Yet, with time and perseverance, I mastered it. This early lesson taught me that the arts are a journey filled with challenges, growth and eventual triumphs that culminate into masterpieces. It also made me appreciate the hard work that goes into each industry as I’ve grown older.
Art is everywhere—in the melodies we hear, the dances we perform, the buildings we admire, and the food we savor. They all tell a story and connect us to a larger tapestry of human expression. As you explore this issue, remember that every artistic endeavor, no matter how small, contributes to the grand masterpiece of our shared culture.
So, I encourage you to put on your artist’s lens and recognize the artistry in every piece on the pages and beyond.

When people think of Orlando, they often think about the theme parks and warm climate we are fortunate and sometimes not so fortunate to have year-round. But Orlando has also become home to a rich tapestry of culinary delights. Have you seen the growing list of diverse restaurants sprouting their wings here over the years? It’s a wonderful sight to see!
Naturally, the Lifestyle team loves to eat, and we have traversed the city to bring you our top 10 favorite dining spots. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this list promises an adventure that will leave you craving for more.
Burgers are one of my absolute favorite things to eat, so it is no surprise that Teak has easily become one of my favorite places to visit. They have an expansive list of burgers, so I get to try a new one every time I go. It makes it fun to see if the new burger tops the last one. They also have a wonderful mimosa deal during Saturday and Sunday brunch!
Reel Fish in Winter Park really is a hidden gem. I tried raw oysters for the first time here, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’d wager to say they have the best oysters and one of the best happy hours I have ever experienced. Once when my family was visiting, I took them, and they were blown away. So now, whenever they come up from Miami, we try to visit at least once.
Kabooki holds the top spot on my favorites list. They always refresh the menu with new delights, and I’ve yet to try something I didn’t enjoy. The service is outstanding. They’re super knowledgeable, which adds to the fun of the whole experience. It’s a solid 5 stars in my book.
The Wellborn is also high on my list of favorites. Its ambiance is unmatched, and I’m completely obsessed with its nostalgic ‘Old Florida’ clubhouse vibe upstairs. The culinary offerings and craft cocktails are spot on. They mainly serve tapas and drinks, so it’s the perfect spot for a topnotch happy hour or a light dinner with friends.
Burntwood Tavern
I enjoy Burntwood Tavern because it’s a local eatery, and everyone knows everyone.
Fresco Cucina Italiana
Fresco’s Italian is also a favorite because it is family-owned and operated, and they make all their food from scratch from generations of recipes.
The All Italian Restaurant
One of my favorites is The All Italian Restaurant on Osceola Parkway because of their Pear and Gorgonzola Fiocchetti (out of this world) and their Truffle Cheese Tortellini (just excellent). It reminds me of eating home-style cooking in Italy.
T-Rex Cafe
I enjoy T-Rex because it is more than just food; it is an experience.
Dragonfly Robata Grill & Sushi
Dragonfly has excellent happy hour choices for food and drinks.
Thrive Cocktail Lounge & Eatery
Thrive is a cocktail/small bites bar in Downtown Orlando. They have a very young/midlevel professional vibe that is casual but also great for dates. They have excellent drinks, and their sliders are fantastic.
Tapa Toro
Another favorite is Tapa Toro in Icon Park because they have the best Lamb Paella outside of Spain.
The Neighborhood Eatery
The Neighborhood Eatery is a family-owned restaurant also in Downtown Orlando. This Korean American fusion restaurant has a homey feel with stellar food. I’ve lived in Korea and have eaten Korean food my entire life. Their food tastes like what I would eat in Korea, so I’ll vouch for them on that.

From ideation to finished product, creating an exhibition takes a village at the Orange County Regional History Center. The Orlando museum is home to award-winning exhibitions visited by guests worldwide. Its national acclaim springs from the staff’s thorough attention to detail in creating an educational and immersive experience. The History Center doesn’t work alone; the museum heavily involves its community to portray and honor history accurately.
Exhibitions begin with a story, and the History Center selects its themes in different ways—commemorating an anniversary, responding to a significant event, or visiting the past through a different lens. The museum’s most recent exhibition, Figurehead: Music & Mayhem in Orlando’s Underground, was inspired by an oral history that led the interviewee to generously donate his personal collection of music memorabilia to the museum. Members or groups in the community bring forth other exhibitions such as Yesterday, This Was Home: The Ocoee Massacre of 1920 and Leaving Vietnam: Building a New Life in Central Florida.
Protecting and preserving Central Florida’s history is vital, so the History Center works closely
with various diverse experts to bring stories to life. Community members, historians, curators, educators, and designers collaborate behind the scenes to thoroughly research the topic, gather pieces for the collection, and create an experience that will transport guests back in time while honoring those who lived it.
After the theme is clear, the History Center spends a great deal of time compiling resources, researching the topic, and reviewing potential artifacts, archives, and photographs for inclusion. All of this must occur before any real planning for the design and layout of an exhibition can begin. The final product includes many considerations, including typography and treatment of labels, color palette, placement of objects, and accessibility considerations. All these factors help convey the interpretive goals of the exhibition, evoke specific emotions, and help ensure education and enjoyment for all.
Often, the first thing guests notice when entering an exhibition is the text on the walls. The History Center considers many typeface styles and size variations to find the ones that best emphasize its message.
For Yesterday, This Was Home: The Ocoee Massacre of 1920, designers reviewed more than 70 font choices
before making a decision. Color played an equally significant role, with curators selecting deep purples and blues to reflect the meaningful but dark legacy of the Ocoee massacre.
In creating an exhibition, designers also strive for best practices for accessibility and layout. They examine every aspect of making the exhibition as accessible as possible to all by considering font sizes, offering bilingual interpretation, and ensuring contrast between wall and text color. The exhibition’s layout plays an especially crucial role in understanding the story. When designing the layout, History Center staff decide what order the text should be read in, where guests will naturally gravitate, and how to create intimate spaces in areas intended for reflection.
The History Center takes its role as a trusted resource for the community seriously, which is why its staff members go through such an extensive process to create profound, accurate, and inclusive exhibitions. The hope is that after guests step into an exhibition at the History Center, they will walk away with a better understanding of Central Florida’s history and a new perspective on the community.
A sweeping revolution is underway in America to safeguard our families and assets against probate, taxes, creditors, lawsuits, and other life-altering events. Revolution
Siena Forrester, a West Orange High School senior, and Cruz Donovan, a University of Central Florida sophomore, share more than just theater arts. They both auditioned for the Daniel Mills Apprenticeship in the past and were not selected for the program. But this year, they gave it another go and got the nod, learning one of the most valuable lessons: if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
Beginning with singing in her school choir in third grade, Forrester grew up in Georgia and moved to Winter Garden in sixth grade. Forrester says she’s not particularly happy she didn’t get the apprenticeship the first time she auditioned in 2020.
“During my first audition [for the Daniel Mills Apprenticeship], I think I had such high expectations of myself,” Forrester says. “This time, I was actually thinking about calling to cancel because I had a cold. But then I got there and just did my thing. I think not expecting to be perfect made me feel more confident, and my audition went better.”
Forrester admits she used to feel jealous of performers–especially those even younger than her–who had a lot of self-confidence. Time and practice have helped her grow more courageous. Now, she looks forward to growing even bolder with an audition workshop offered to the apprentices. Forrester has
always loved singing and counts her dad as one of her biggest cheerleaders.
“Singing comes easiest to me because it’s something I’ve done for so long. Acting and dancing are a little more complicated for me, but I’m excited to have the opportunity to expand those skills through the Daniels Mills Apprenticeship,” Forrester says.
Next up, after the apprenticeship, Forrester has her sights set on applying to Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia.
Donovan, who also auditioned more than once before being accepted into the Daniel Mills Apprenticeship, advises other performers to keep honing their craft and never stop auditioning if they love performing.
“There’s going to be nos and people who don’t see you,” he says. “But there will also be people who do see your talent and will give you an opportunity.”
Donovan is grateful for the opportunity to earn while learning as an apprentice this year. Acting is all Donovan has ever wanted to do. In high school, he performed at the district and state Thespian Festivals with his school’s troupe and was thrilled when they received “superior status” for their performances at both festivals.
His first taste of theater came when he was in fourth grade and attended a Wizarding World camp put on by the Orlando Rep. The premise of the camp was performing plays based on student-created Harry Potter adjacent characters.
Now as then, Donovan enjoys being able to give birth to new characters. As part of UCF’s Project Spotlight, Donovan routinely works on never-before-seen theater projects with student playwrights and directors to develop new plays.
“I like the idea of bringing yourself and your own lived experience into a character no one has ever seen. But I love being able to walk around in a well-established character, too. That’s what’s so cool about acting; it has so many different elements to love about it,” Donovan says.
As a member of Alpha Psi Omega (APO), a co-ed collegiate National Theatre Honor Society, Donovan knows that having a support network can be extremely helpful.
“When you’re a performer, there can be some nos. It comes with the territory,” he says. “Hopefully, there will be even more yeses as I continue to build my skills and my network through the apprenticeship.”
Many factors will impact his future health, most of which exist outside our walls. Making a difference through programs that will reach him at school, at home and even on the playground is a big part of our mission. The Ravenous Pig, one of Winter Park’s premier restaurants, looks forward to a refresh. Co-owners and chefs James and Julie Petrakis of JP Restaurants expect the new design to finish around mid-November and should not require the restaurant to close for a long time.
Anna Woodman Interior Design, South Florida’s premier commercial interior design firm, which also spearheaded the 2007 design of the original restaurant in its first location on Orange Avenue, is onboard to brighten up “The Pig.” In collaboration with Maitland-based Blankenship Architects, Woodman says diners can expect a modern look with unexpected whimsical touches.
“James and Julie are so creative, which you can see clearly in the menu. We want that creativity to shine through in the updates we’re planning,” Woodman says.
James says it is vital that the redesign happens without closing. “Our customers count on us for fresh, local, farm-to-table meals, so we will do this renovation while staying open as much as possible.”
Also, by using area architects, JP Restaurants is supporting the lo-
cal economy. Diners can expect the same great seasonal menu. Nothing will change there. James calls the menu a fresh take on new American fare, offering crispy pork belly, rock shrimp tacos, and Ponce Inlet red snapper (check the menu for seasonal availability).
James admits that The Ravenous Pig’s original space on Orange Avenue back in 2007 had an intimate tavern feel that didn’t quite translate to the larger space the restaurant moved into on Fairbanks Avenue back in 2017.
“We’re undoing some of the things we did years ago,” James says. Woodman agrees, saying the new look will be more colorful, fitting the approximately 6,000 square-foot eatery and beer garden.
“We’re going to include custom millwork and fine artistic craftsmanship with a Charleston coastal vibe,” Woodman says.
The refresh will include:
■ An open view of the kitchen.
■ A featured display of cutlery.
■ Punches of color alongside mementos will pay homage to The Ravenous Pig’s history.
Other areas of the restaurant will see improvements as well. Most notably, the bar will feature an eyecatching Cambria quartz countertop with brass alloy veining and deep navy wood accents. Woodman also promises some fun surprises in the design of bathrooms. The outdoor beer garden will maintain its relaxed ambiance and design.
In addition to The Ravenous Pig, JP Restaurants includes Cask & Larder, a Southern-inspired concept at Orlando International Airport; Swine & Sons Provisions, a gourmet counter service restaurant and caterer on Orange Avenue; and the Polite Pig, a quick-service modern barbecue-style restaurant at Disney Springs.

At the restaurant, Executive Chef Stephen Doyle and twin Sous Chefs Neil and Matt Corbin craft meals into memorable experiences. Chef Stephen’s Unpredictable Journey:
From Ireland’s green landscapes to mechanical engineering to Orlando’s bustling kitchens, Chef Stephen’s journey to Orlando was anything but predictable.
“The funny story was when I came here, I ended up cutting my fingers, so I was like, ‘I’m never putting my fingers in the engine again,’ so I picked up a chef knife instead,” he laughed.
Starting at Calico Jack’s Oyster Bar, his passion for delighting patrons propelled him up the culinary ranks. Today, as the Executive Chef of Hamilton’s Kitchen, he envisions a bustling space renowned for its fivestar experiences. And what better way to reach the goal than by leading an extraordinary team who is just as passionate about food and results?
The Corbin Twins: Culinary Synchrony Boston-born with Barbadian roots, Matt and Neil Corbin’s culinary love story began by watching their mother cook. While Neil’s culinary aspirations were clear early on, Matt’s shift from carpentry to cooking was a delightful twist. So, when their parents asked them to move to Orlando, they accepted the request. The rest is a match made in heaven.
“Neil came to me first. If I forget something, he’s already done it, and to have somebody like that is amazing,” Chef Stephen said. “So, I said to him one day, ‘you don’t happen to have another one of you, and he goes, yeah, I do actually, my brother,’ so I got a two for one.”
Matt and Neil have always shared similar interests. Sparked during the pandemic, their new love for gardening fuels their culinary creativity at home and work.
“Growing our own food just makes us want to experiment with the fresh ingredients in our yard,” Neil shared, with Matt adding, “It’s best fresh. I love seeing everything grow from nothing to ready to pick and put on a plate.”
The twins constantly innovate, drawing inspiration from Disney
Springs, cruises, YouTube and TikTok. They have different interests in food styles, but their synergy is undeniable. Matt and Neil even admit to leaving the kitchen the way the other likes. It makes for a seamless transition between the day and night shifts.
“I don’t even hear them talk sometimes, but they can intertwine so well,” Chef Stephen comments. “There are never any complications, and they never have a bad word to say about each other; they’re just super cool.”
Under Chef Stephen’s guidance, they’re now crafting their own menu items. The job may be challenging sometimes, but they enjoy the tough love.
“[Chef Stephen] is awesome! He’s had my back since I started working here, so he always takes care of me,” Neil said. “He gave me a chance to be a sous chef,” Matt echoed.
This trio’s collaboration is the cornerstone of Hamilton’s Kitchen’s success. Chef Stephen’s mentorship and the twins’ eagerness to learn and innovate create a nurturing and challenging dynamic. Together, they’re not just serving meals; they’re crafting experiences.

Part of Isabelle’s routine at home consists of her tutu and dancing like a ballerina.This is a must! We do not go to bed without dancing and she has to have her tutu on. It’s the cutest!!

Isabelle was born at 37 weeks and spent 1 week in the hospital with mama after birth. Going to each doctor’s appointment has been another reminder that Isabelle is a fighter and she always surpasses her milestones.

I definitely have to say that WE ALL enjoyed the photoshoot session. Seeing Isabelle have fun with the photographer’s daughter was the sweetest. What’s the most memorable adventure or outing you have had with your toddler that you like to share with others?
Our recent trip to the drive-thru Wild Safari. Kadyn was totally fascinated with the animals; however, at her request, we had to roll up the windows when around the ostriches and emus. They were very inquisitive, walking up to the car window. We even sang to the alligators and crocodiles in the pond. To our surprise, they actually surfaced while being serenaded. We made up and sang an alligator/ crocodile song to the tune of 5 Little Ducks Went Swimming One Day.
Does your toddler have any quirky habits or unique routines that make you smile?
Kadyn likes to go on nature walks to look for many different insects and flowers, read books, write, color and stick stickers everywhere.

Singer, dancer, band member, emcee, and stage manager are a few of the titles Takara Speagle has had throughout her time in the performance industry.
“Born into” the performing world, Speagle said her musician parents instilled her passion for the arts from a young age. Singing as soon as she could talk and getting into dance lessons at around two and a half years old, Speagle said she continued to grow in her work.
She has sung the national anthem at ballgames, danced down Main Street at Disney, joined a Glee-like group, became the lead singer in a country cover band, and sang in Diagon Alley at Universal, making up a few of the experiences that shaped her into the person and performer that she is today.
“It’s very awesome that my parents set an example of being passionate about what they do full-time,” Speagle said. “You know, it’s not like your average nine to five. Our schedules are crazy.”
Her devotion to her craft has allowed her to see the performance world evolve into a more accepting environment. While she has witnessed the entertainment scene advance in being more welcoming, she said she wants to ensure performers give themselves the same grace they give others.
“I think with developing your craft, you also learn a lot about yourself and other people within your craft and how different you are from the girl next to you,” Speagle said. “I’ve had to overcome a lot of the age shame and the body shame that can come with being in this industry for so long and like having babies and, you know, getting older.”
She said she is creating and developing her own business to help women be more comfortable “in their own skin, their current skin and not just the skin they want to have,” as she said it is hard for performers not to be aware of how they look when they are trying to fit themselves into a “certain job.”
“It’s so hard to wrap your mind around that because as performers, we sometimes, and most times, consider our worth based on where we work or what part we booked or how high or low we can sing or how high we can kick our leg. Our worth is based on what shows we’ve done; basically, our worth is based on our resume, and that’s not the case,” Speagle said. “It’s hard to get away from that, and I think it stems a lot from our self-confidence.”
While her business is still in its early days, she said she feels its mission will resonate with many women and performers who have been in her shoes. Having worked with Speagle over the last 13 years, Paul Creighton, theatrical agent and entertainment producer, said he has seen her grow in her talents and how she presents them exponentially.
They began working together in a Glee-styled entertainment group Creighton started called SING, which no longer tours. Regularly working together still, he said Speagle understands the business side of the industry better than most, which he said you can see in her smile.
“[Her smile] is a combination of her joy, with just a hint of ‘don’t mess with me because I know what’s going on,’” Creighton said.
He describes the performance industry as where people like him and Speagle can “make people smile” and “buoy their spirits.” As Speagle’s journey as a performer has no end in sight, she continues to reflect on how coming from her music-oriented family has helped mold her into who she is today.
“I just feel like music helps develop good humans, period. The arts help develop creativity and innovation, and you learn history and respect for people who are different than you and have different skills than you,” Speagle said. “And the arts, music, dance, and writers bring people together in a way that nothing else does. It’s a common ground, a common language, and it just unifies. I feel like it’s uplifting. There’s less negativity; it’s just all-around good vibes.”
September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month: a celebration of American citizens whose ancestors come from Hispanic America. Check out the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic Heritage Month and how you can celebrate in Orlando!
According to History.com, Hispanic Heritage Month dates back to September 17, 1968, when President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Congress passed Public Law 90-48, declaring September 15 and 16 as the start of Hispanic Heritage Week, which coincided with the Independence Day celebrations of many Hispanic countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and more.
In 1987, U.S. Representative Esteban E. Torres proposed expanding Hispanic Heritage Week to a monthlong celebration to “properly observe and coordinate events and activities to celebrate Hispanic culture and achievement.” On September 14, 1989, President George H.W. Bush declared the first 31-day Hispanic Heritage Month to take place between September 15 to October 15.
People have participated in Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States in various ways since its com-
mencement 42 years ago. Some throw parties, others hold fundraisers, but in Orlando, there’s a group that gets together and appreciates the unique traits everyone brings to the table.
The 2023 Hispanic Heritage Month Art Exhibition is a haven for Hispanic artists of Orlando to celebrate their talents. One participant looks forward to this year’s exhibition as she looks to return “stronger, with more ideas, and with a better portfolio than last year.”
Andrea Castaneda, a Hondurian-American artist who now resides in Central Florida, says she uses the struggles she faced while in Honduras as motivation for her artwork. “Honduras is a very poor country where there is a lot of suffering,” Castaneda said, “so my artwork is… a little bit intense.” Nevertheless, Castaneda’s work typically balances the fire of her painful past with her fruitful breath of hope for the future. Referring to said balance, Castaneda said her artwork “has a lot of tension because of the power I put in the painting, but I always try to put peace in the artwork.”
Considering the trials within the art industry, Castaneda has proven her worth as she continues to grow as an artist despite her battles against mental illness. “Because many people who struggle with mental illness think they can’t make it, I want to be an example for people with mental illness. To tell them that you can do it,” Castaneda said.
Despite the pressure of mental illness, struggles in Honduras, and the demands of the art industry, Castaneda’s priorities remain on helping those around her. “I want to inspire people… to help people with my art, with my story.”

What you’ll need:

Discover this unique way to recycle old mason jars. These work great as centerpieces for family dinners or luminous decorations for a cozy movie night.
Materials:
■ Mason jars
■ Mod Podge
■ Colored tissue paper ripped into pieces
■ Brown construction paper
■ Paintbrush
■ Candle
Directions:
1. Paint the Mod Podge onto one section of the mason jar. It is better to work in sections because Mod Podge dries very quickly. This way, you can take your time decorating your mason jar.
2. Stick the pieces of colored tissue paper to the side of the mason jar covered in Mod Podge. Repeat steps one and two until your jar is completely covered with tissue paper.
3. Cut the brown construction paper into a tree shape and glue it onto the decorated mason jar with more Mod Podge.
4. Brush on a final layer of Mod Podge over the entire jar to smooth out any loose tissue paper and to ensure the tree stays in place. Let dry.
5. Place a candle inside the decorated mason jar and watch the colors glow!
Apple stamping is the one time when it’s ok to play with your food. As an added plus, this craft might even convince your little ones to eat a healthy snack while they paint.
Materials:
■ Cardstock paper or canvas
■ Tempera paint
■ Paper plate or flat tray
■ Apples
■ Knife
■ Popsicle sticks (optional)
■ Paintbrushes (optional)
Directions:
1. Cut each apple in half.
2. If you would prefer to minimize the mess, create a makeshift handle by pressing a popsicle stick into the apple halves, skin side up. Otherwise, jump in hands first and worry about the mess later!
3. Pour your desired paint color onto a paper plate or tray and firmly press the core side of the apple halve into the paint.
4. Quickly move over to your paper or canvas and stamp your paintcovered apple.
5. Repeat steps three through four until your page is covered with as many apples as you want. If you want to be extra creative, bring out the paintbrushes and decorate your apple stamps in any design your heart desires.

■ Faux fall leaves
■ Liquid glue
■ Ribbon
■ Scissors
■ Hole punch
Directions:
1. Fold the paper plate in half and remove the center by cutting a half circle on the folded side.
2. Unfold the plate and punch a hole in the top (tip: cut two overlapping holes if your ribbon will not fit through one). Thread the ribbon through the hole and tie the end into a loop.
3. Cover the paper plate in glue and paste the faux leaves around it until it is completely covered in fun fall colors.
4. Let dry and hang your creation on the front door for everyone to see!

While pumpkin is a classic fall flavor, it is time to spice things up and explore what other flavors can give us that cozy fall feeling. Get ready to FALL in love with these equally easy and delicious three-step recipes to kick off the season.
Maple Cranberry Glazed Roasted Turkey:
It is hard to think of fall without the sudden craving for turkey. No more asking to pass the cranberry sauce because this turkey is already glazed in it. Taste the perfect blend of sweet and savory with this maple cranberry glazed roasted turkey.
1 12 to 14-pound turkey
1 cup maple syrup
3/4 cup cranberry sauce
1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Place turkey in a shallow roasting pan, breast side up.
2. Combine maple syrup, cranberry sauce, and walnuts. Pour over turkey.
3. Bake uncovered for three hours. Remove from the oven and cover for 20 minutes before carving.
Ginger and Pear Soup: Warm your soul with autumn in a bowl. The best way to get in the cozy spirit of fall is with a warm bowl of soup. Grab the fuzzy blankets, turn on your favorite fall film, and stir up some ginger and pear soup.
1 chopped onion
1 teaspoon grated ginger
2 tablespoon coconut oil
2 chopped pears
2 chopped sweet potatoes
Cardamom to taste
4 cups bone broth
Ground black pepper to taste Sea salt to taste
1. Sautée chopped onion and ginger in coconut oil. Season with salt and pepper.
2. Mix in bone broth, sweet potatoes, and pears. Let cook for 25 minutes until soft.
3. Blend all ingredients and serve.
Apple and Fig Crumble: Pumpkin pie will never cross your mind again after you try this apple and fig crumble, perfect for a midday snack or an after-dinner dessert. This combination of warm, sweet, heavenly goodness will have you coming back for seconds.
6 peeled and cubed green apples
4-6 quartered figs
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup shredded coconut
1/4 cup flaked or slivered almonds
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup plain flour
1/3 cup melted butter
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Combine fruit, sugar, and cinnamon. Transfer to an oven-safe dish.
2. Combine oats, coconut, almonds, sugar, flour, and butter.
3. Pour the second mixture over the top of the fruit mixture and bake for 40 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream.
Salted Caramel Ice Cream: Although fall is dawning, Florida will always be Florida and HOT. Stay cool and celebrate the season with homemade salted caramel ice cream. This recipe is so easy you can enjoy the tasty treat without turning on the stove.
1 cup dulce de leche
2 cups heavy cream
1 cup whole milk
1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
1. Blend dulce de leche, milk, and salt. Stir in heavy cream with a spatula.
2. Refrigerate for two hours. Remove from the fridge and churn for 30 minutes.
3. Freeze for five to six hours.

Florida wildfires are a given when living in the Sunshine State. Backyard fire outings are the perfect activity to satisfy the longing for the fall feel. Whether you’re roasting s’mores over a small fire or using lighter fluid on wooden planks to host your annual September bonfire, it’s important to practice fire safety when playing with fire. Here are three Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tips to ensure you’re fire focused this fall.
Before you light up your bonfire, you must know where to put it first. The distance of the bonfire from your home and nearby woods must follow local regulations. In addition to distance, the ground you host your bonfire on must be level to avoid mishaps between the fire and those around the fire.
It’s crucial to clear flammable items from the bonfire area, such as brush, twigs, weeds, and yard waste. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services recommends mowing your grass down to a height of four inches or lower before having a backyard fire.
When starting a backyard fire in Florida, there are some specific guidelines and laws to follow. Any yard waste or wood used in the fire “must fit in an 8-foot diameter pile, fire pit, or noncombustible container,” according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ website.
Other rules and regulations:
■ Start your fire before 8 A.M. and extinguish it at least one hour before sunrise.
■ Keep the fire at least 25 feet from your home, brush, woods, or other structures.
■ Keep the fire at least 50 feet away from paved public roads.
■ Keep the fire 150 feet from other occupied buildings.
In Florida, burning garbage, including but not limited to plastic, rubber materials, and paper products, is illegal. It is also essential to monitor the weather when planning a bonfire. Avoid starting a fire during dry weather, windy days, high fire danger periods, and immediately after a storm.
An important item to have in your house is a fire extinguisher. Whether or not you plan on having a bonfire, an accessible fire extinguisher can help stop unexpected things like stovetop fires, electrical fires, etc. Another sufficient way to put out a fire is suffocation. You can find different fire blankets at local hardware and camping stores and use them to suffocate a fire. If you do not have access to a fire blanket, you can use any thick and heavy fabric, like a carpet or thick blanket, to cover the fire.
As the humidity lowers and the bonfire season approaches, be mindful of Florida wildfires and their presence throughout the state.
