2023-2024 Annual Report

Shaping The Future
In my president’s letter last year, I described the year as “Redefining Tomorrow” and referenced Traci Skalberg as the incoming Executive Director with her vision for the future of Central Community College Foundation (CCCF).
“Shaping the Future” is how I might best describe our year ending June 30, 2024.
Traci is successfully navigating staffing changes, budget challenges, and new fundraising projects as she works towards the vision she has for foundation staff to be located on each of the Central Community College (CCC) campuses. As expected, all of these needs are a process and not an event, so it will take time to reach the destination desired. The current staff for the Foundation are engaged, committed, and having fun doing what they do and this is very rewarding to see!
CCCF made good progress on several fundraising projects. We kicked off a major gifts campaign for a new Automotive Careers Training Center building on the Hastings Campus. Meanwhile, pledges and planned gifts continue to arrive for past campaigns in Kearney and Columbus.
Dean Moors is still working on a part-time basis as Planned Giving Director We are focused on reaching our $25 million “Generations of Impact” planned giving campaign target. I am very excited about having an endowment at some point in the future that will cover most or all annual operating expenses for CCCF. If this quest becomes reality, it will put CCCF in a position to be more agile in our response to needs at the college while also reducing the administrative costs allocated to dollars
raised. It is a notable and forward-thinking goal and we are grateful that Dean has committed his time to this project. Keep up the good work Dean!
My term as the CCCF President came to an end June 30, 2024 and Jay Trofholz from Columbus has taken the reins for the next two years. I will remain on the Board of Directors with one more year of my term remaining. It has been an honor to support the CCCF team as they have and will continue to make a true difference in the lives of students and communities served by Central Community College.

It All Adds Up To IMPACT
We often see November and December as the season of giving. Whether inspired by holiday spirit or end-of-year tax planning, it’s always a good time to support the Central Community College (CCC) Foundation. Gifts come in many forms, and some can provide tax benefits as well. Here are several options for making an impact:
Current Gifts
CASH
The easiest option, cash donations can be made in person, by mail, or online. If you itemize, cash donations are tax-deductible.
STOCKS OR MUTUAL FUNDS
Donating appreciated stocks or mutual funds can provide tax savings by avoiding capital gains and offering a deduction. Contact the CCC Foundation for transfer instructions.
COMMODITIES
Farmers can donate grain and receive tax savings. Contact the CCC Foundation for instructions on transferring ownership at the elevator.
MATCHING GIFTS
Many employers match charitable donations, which can double your impact. Check if your employer offers this benefit.
IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER
If you’re 70.5 or older, you can give up to $100,000 from your IRA as a Qualified Charitable Distribution. This may satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) without adding to taxable income.
Deferred Gifts
BEQUEST IN YOUR WILL
You can name CCC Foundation in your will to leave a specific amount or percentage of your estate.
POD/TOD ACCOUNTS
Setting up Payment on Death (POD) or Transfer on Death (TOD) designations on accounts is an easy way to leave a legacy for the CCC Foundation.
CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST (CRT)
A CRT can provide income to you or loved ones during your lifetime, with the remainder supporting CCC Foundation.
LIFE INSURANCE
Designate CCC Foundation as the beneficiary of your life insurance, or transfer ownership for a current deduction on premiums.
REAL PROPERTY & LIFE ESTATES
Real estate gifts, such as farmland or rental properties, can offer tax benefits. In some cases, you may retain the right to live on the property during your lifetime.
Every gift, whether traditional or creative, supports CCC students and strengthens Central Nebraska communities. To learn more, contact us at 402-460-2151 or foundation@cccneb.edu. We are here to help you create an impact in a way that aligns with your values and goals. Please consult your tax and legal advisors for personalized guidance.
The Central Community College Foundation is the supporting 501(c)3 organization for the Warren and Velda Wilson Foundation. This allows the Wilson Foundation assets to grow into perpetuity. Scholarship awards are made annually to any Nebraska-based institution of higher education.
Warren and Velda Wilson devoted more than 60 years to farming in south central Nebraska. The couple had no children. As part of their estate plan, they established an educational foundation to provide scholarships to help deserving young people in the area where they had made their livelihood.
The Wilsons wrote, “It is our desire that these scholarships not be limited to graduating seniors with only the highest levels of academic achievement. Other factors are also important to us including good citizenship, involvement in school and community activities, and potential for future academic success.”
The Wilson Foundation board of directors includes Jay Landell, President; Jennifer Fleischer, Vice President; Lu Loehr (niece of the Wilsons), Secretary/Treasurer; John Farrell, Scott Kummer, and Brian Shaw.
Since 2003, the CCC Foundation has been coordinating the scholarship process for the Wilson Foundation. The Nebraska counties included in the area eligible to apply for scholarships are Adams, Clay, Fillmore, Hall, Hamilton, Nuckolls, Phelps, Thayer, Webster and York. The scholarship is nonrenewable.
For the 2023-24 school terms, $320,000 was awarded to 200 deserving students in the 10-county area. Since inception nearly $8 million has been awarded.

Community Appreciation
On September, 7 2023, Central Community College and the Central Community College Foundation welcomed community members to the Hastings Campus for a special evening of appreciation. The event, which coincided with the Chamber’s Business After Hours, provided an opportunity to celebrate the vital partnerships that support our college and students. Attendees explored highlighted CCC programs and enjoyed delicious hors d’oeuvres prepared by the CCC Culinary Arts students. It was a wonderful evening of connection, showcasing the importance of collaboration and community in Central Nebraska.
Warren & Velda Wilson
Supporting students at CCC goes beyond scholarships. The Foundation manages several funds designed to provide critical support to both students and college programs, including the Food and Hygiene Pantry Fund, Central for Student Success Fund, International Studies Fund, Phi Theta Kappa Fund, Veterans Fund, and TRIO Fund, among others. Additionally, a number of permanently endowed funds have been established to ensure lasting support for students and programs. These endowed funds are carefully invested, with scholarships and assistance awarded from investment earnings, while the principal remains untouched to continue supporting future generations at Central Community College.
Endowed funds are highlighted in blue below, while other funds managed by the Foundation are listed in black. If you or someone you know is interested in establishing or learning more about endowed or other scholarship opportunities, please contact the Central Community College Foundation at 402-460-2151 or foundation@cccneb.edu. Donors Help CCC Acquire a Steinway Piano
Central Community College (CCC) in Columbus has successfully completed its fundraising campaign to acquire a new concert piano, thanks to the generosity of 38 donors. The campaign, aimed at replacing the college’s aging piano, met its goal, allowing the Fine and Performing Arts program to continue offering top-tier musical experiences to students and audiences alike.
The college’s previous piano, a Chickering grand donated by the City of Columbus in 1979, served the community for 45 years. After decades of performances and lessons, it became clear that the instrument had reached the end of its musical life. The need for a high-quality replacement led CCC to a remarkable 1985 Steinway & Sons concert piano. Originally purchased by a pianist in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Steinway has now found a new home where it will be used and cherished by CCC’s students and faculty.
The fundraising campaign received a boost from Terry and Beth Millard, who generously offered to match donations up to $5,000, inspiring contributions from a wide range of supporters. Their matching gift helped the campaign reach its goal, ensuring the Steinway will continue to enrich the Fine and Performing Arts program for generations to come.
Steinway pianos are known for their exceptional craftsmanship, with more than 97% of concert pianists preferring to perform on one. CCC’s newly acquired Steinway, made from hard rock maple, Sitka spruce, and Swedish steel, promises to provide outstanding sound quality for the college’s performances.
This successful campaign underscores the community’s commitment to fostering arts education at CCC. The new piano is a key investment in the future of music at the college, ensuring that students will continue to learn and perform on an instrument of superior quality. The college and Foundation extends our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed, and looks forward to many more years of beautiful music filling its halls.

Generations of Impact: Building a Legacy for Students, Communities, and the Future of CCC
At Central Community College, shaping the future has always been at the heart of our mission. Through our strategic initiative, Generations of Impact, we aim to create a lasting legacy for students, the College, and our communities. This initiative was born out of a vision for a long-term, transformative approach that ensures the sustainability of both the College and the Foundation.
A recent feasibility study revealed the remarkable support behind this vision, with over 94% of respondents expressing a willingness to contribute to the campaign. This overwhelming endorsement has encouraged us to pursue a bold goal: raising $25 million in new funds, primarily through planned gifts within the wills and trusts of donors’ estate plans.
These new funds will support essential areas: scholarships, innovative programs, advanced technology, and the Foundation’s operational needs. A key goal of the project is to grow the Foundation’s administrative endowment, providing financial stability for the future. With the goal of generating $8 million for this endowment, we envision a future where the Foundation covers 100% of its net operating expenses, giving us the sustainability and ability to direct all dollars donated directly to students and educational programs.
Already, the impact is being felt.

To date, nearly $14 million in estate commitments have been made toward this campaign — a testament to the generosity and vision of donors who believe in the power of education to change
Among the first to answer the call were Terry and Beth Millard of Columbus. A couple deeply connected to
Central Community College, Terry and Beth have spent their careers in financial planning, investments, and education. Their personal experience has shown them the profound impact that CCC has on the surrounding community and the 25 counties it serves. Their generosity has been a beacon, inspiring others to give and setting a standard of commitment.
“We give to an organization that has a well-defined need,” Terry often says. Central Community College exemplifies this by creating pathways to success through affordable education, partnerships, and a focus on producing a skilled, educated workforce. For the Millards, the future is bright because CCC helps shape it.
Over the years, Terry and Beth have seen the direct impact of their support through student testimonials and community growth. Their belief in CCC has made them longstanding donors, contributing to scholarships, athletic programs, and major campaigns like the Center for Science and Technology project on the Columbus Campus. When the Generations of Impact initiative was introduced, it aligned perfectly with their desire to leave a legacy. They chose to set aside a portion of their estate for endowed scholarships and to contribute to the administrative endowment, demonstrating their long-term vision and passion for the College and its students.
Terry and Beth are now proud members of the Legacy Society — a group of donors whose planned gifts will continue to impact generations of students. Their legacy is a living testament to the difference one couple can make when they believe in the power of education.
Generations of Impact is more than just a campaign. It’s an invitation to dream about what’s possible. It’s a reminder that we all have the ability to leave something behind that lasts far beyond our lifetime. By working with financial, investment, and legal advisors, you too can create your legacy for the future and beyond.
Your legacy can change lives, strengthen communities, and ensure that the mission of Central Community College continues for generations to come. Consider how you can be a part of this transformative journey. Your gift, no matter its size, can leave an indelible mark on the future — one that will be felt by students, families, and communities for years to come.

It is a great honor to receive these scholarships. Though my academic journey has not been easy, I am proud to admit that my perseverance has led me to pursue the opportunity given to me by Central Community College to attain an associate degree in nursing. I hope that in the future I will be able to give back to the communities in Nebraska, by providing healthcare services to seniors and vulnerable Nebraskans. — Ibrahim

The Wolfe Family Student Success Fund: Supporting CCC Students Beyond the Classroom
For Erika Wolfe, Associate Dean of Students at Central Community College’s Hastings campus, education is about much more than tuition and textbooks. It’s about supporting the whole student, including the often-overlooked challenges that can make or break a student’s success. That belief was the driving force behind the creation of the Wolfe Family Student Success Fund, a scholarship designed to address the everyday needs of students, needs that go beyond the classroom.
“I’ve always believed that education is about more than just paying for classes,” says Wolfe. “Many students struggle with basic needs like food and hygiene, which can prevent them from fully engaging in their education. I wanted to create a fund that supports students in those areas.”

Her personal experiences in education, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, opened her eyes to the harsh realities students face when balancing academics with financial hardship.
“I encountered students who were worrying about where their next meal would come from or
how they could afford basic necessities,” she recalls. “That’s when I knew I had to do more.”
The Wolfe Family Student Success Fund supports the Food and Hygiene Pantry and the Central for Student Success Fund, helping students focus on their education rather than daily struggles. For Wolfe, addressing these needs is critical to academic success. “When students don’t have enough to eat or can’t afford basic hygiene products, it’s nearly impossible for them to focus on learning. I want this fund to ease that burden and help them succeed.”
Naming the scholarship after her family was a natural decision. Growing up, Wolfe’s parents instilled in her the importance of giving back. “Every Christmas, we participated in the Giving Tree, which taught us the value of helping those in need. This scholarship is a continuation of that tradition, ensuring that students struggling with basic needs have the support they need to thrive.”
Wolfe’s hope is that the grant will not only help students in the present but also inspire them to give back in the future. “We want to leave a legacy of kindness, generosity, and action. Our goal is to create a ripple effect - students who benefit from this fund will one day feel empowered to help others, continuing the cycle of generosity.”
When asked what she would say to others considering establishing a fund, Wolfe emphasizes the profound impact even a small contribution can make. “You never know how much a small gesture can change someone’s life. By supporting initiatives like the Food and Hygiene Pantry or the Central for Student Success Fund, you’re making a meaningful investment in the future of our communities.”
Through the Wolfe Family Student Success Fund, Erika is helping to ensure that students can focus on their education, pursue their dreams, and ultimately build a better future for themselves and their communities.
Support from employees of Central Community College and the Foundation is instrumental in the success of the CCC Foundation’s fundraising efforts. While the dollars contributed by the employees are important, even more significant is the loyalty, commitment, and dedication these donations represent. The following list represents 318 part-time, full-time and community education employees who have contributed to the CCC Foundation’s 2023 Pacesetter Campaign, 2023 Employee Appeal, paid to participate in the 2023 Pro-Am Golf Tournament, donated their CCC Service or Retirement Awards and/or participated in other fundraising opportunities sponsored by the CCC Foundation.

Hornady Manufacturing Makes a Major Move to
In a generous act that could only be described as a “breakthrough case,” Hornady Manufacturing has committed $750,000 to Central Community College (CCC), establishing the Hornady Criminal Justice Fund. This landmark gift, made in honor of the company’s 75th year in business, is a gamechanger for the college’s criminal justice program — and it’s sending a strong message about Hornady’s commitment to the community.
The Hornady Criminal Justice Fund will provide scholarships and grants, helping students interested in law enforcement get the training they need to serve and protect. And the evidence of this investment is already on full display — literally. CCC’s new crime house, where criminal justice students and law enforcement agencies hone their investigative skills, has officially been renamed the Hornady Crime House.
“Donating to the Central Community College Foundation and creating the Hornady Criminal Justice Fund shows our pride in CCC and the critical work they’re doing for future law enforcement professionals,” said Steve Hornady, president of Hornady Manufacturing. “This is our way of supporting the future protectors of our community,

and we couldn’t be more excited about it.”
The Hornady Crime House isn’t just your average classroom — it’s a fully immersive, hands-on training facility where students and law enforcement personnel tackle simulated crime scenes and practice real-world techniques. The crime house has already earned quite the reputation, drawing police departments from Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, and beyond, as well as Nebraska State Patrol officers. High schools, scout troops, and community groups are also getting in on the action, earning merit badges and learning about law enforcement careers in the most interactive way possible.
“This generous donation is more than just a boost to our program — it’s a statement,” said Michael David, CCC’s criminal justice program director. “Hornady Manufacturing is backing the next generation of law enforcement, and thanks to them, we’re giving students an experience that’s as close to the real deal as it gets.”
The Hornady Criminal Justice Fund will have long-lasting impact. It will support up to 20 scholarships per year for students pursuing criminal justice degrees, along with programmatic grants to enhance learning opportunities. In other words, this donation is setting the stage for more well-prepared officers to serve and protect Nebraska communities in the future.
The community celebrated this impactful donation with a special naming ceremony on April 18, 2024, which featured remarks from CCC leaders, Grand Island Chief of Police Kevin Denney and Steve Hornady himself. Approximately 200 people were in attendance including representatives from several law enforcement agencies in the 25-county

Support Law Enforcement Education at CCC
area. The first five Hornady Criminal Justice Scholars were introduced, offering a glimpse into the bright future this gift is helping to shape.
“This partnership between Hornady Manufacturing and CCC is a classic case of values meeting vision,” said Traci Skalberg, executive director of the CCC Foundation. “Hornady has always been a force in this community, and their commitment to supporting local law enforcement education is just another way they’re making a real difference.”
With the establishment of the Hornady Criminal Justice Fund, Central Community College’s program is now equipped to offer top-notch training and financial support
to aspiring law enforcement officers. This is one “case” where the impact will be felt for years to come, as students enter the field armed with the skills and knowledge they need to protect and serve our communities.
In the words of Dr. Marcie Kemnitz, CCC-Grand Island president, “This is more than just a donation — this is an investment in our community’s future. Hornady’s commitment will have a profound impact on our students and the law enforcement agencies they’ll go on to serve.”
So, while no “crime” was committed here, it’s safe to say the evidence points to one thing: Hornady Manufacturing has left a lasting legacy at CCC, and their gift will continue to support the community for generations to come.

Driving the Present SHIFTING THE FUTURE
The New Automotive Careers Training Center at Central Community College
For nearly 60 years, Central Community College (CCC) has been at the forefront of training a skilled workforce for the automotive and auto body industries at its Hastings Campus. But now, a transformative moment is upon us. The current automotive facility, originally built in 1943 and serving the college since 1966, has played its part well, but it’s time for a shift — a modernization that matches today’s industry demands and future opportunities.
Recognizing the need for updated training space, CCC has made the construction of a new Automotive Careers Training Center a top priority. This state-of-the-art facility, spanning approximately 42,000 square feet, is the largest capital investment in the college’s five-year master plan. With an estimated cost of $23 million, this project promises to create a cutting-edge learning environment for the automotive and auto body programs on the Hastings Campus, preparing students with the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving industry.
While CCC has already secured federal ARPA funds and committed nearly $15 million of its own resources, there remains a funding gap of at least $3 million for construction and an additional $500,000 for a scholarship and programmatic endowment. To close this gap, the Central Community College Foundation has launched a $3.5 million major gifts campaign.
Building Momentum: Leadership and Community Engagement
In September 2023, the Central Community College Foundation partnered with Tom Paulson Consulting to conduct a feasibility study, seeking input from business and community leaders across Central Nebraska. The study confirmed widespread support for the new facility, strong financial backing, and a clear case for investment. With this encouraging feedback, the Foundation Board made the decision to proceed with the major gifts campaign.
An Executive Leadership Team has been formed to spearhead fundraising efforts, consisting of local industry leaders, CCC representatives, and Foundation board members. These committed individuals, including leaders from Levander’s Body Shops, Dinsdale Automotive, Hastings Ford, Janssen Auto Group, Eustis Body Shops, and Midway Auto Group, are united in their vision for shaping the future of automotive and auto body training in Nebraska. The team, alongside CCC Foundation staff, is dedicated to driving this campaign forward and engaging key partners in this ambitious project.

Accelerating Toward a Bright Future
With a blend of public and private support, the new Automotive Careers Training Center is poised to become a beacon of excellence, attracting students, meeting industry standards, and ensuring CCC remains a leader in workforce development. The time is now for Central Nebraska to invest in the future of automotive education and innovation, ensuring our region stays competitive in this vital sector.

The journey to create this advanced educational hub has begun, and we invite you to be part of this exciting transformation. Together, we can shift gears and drive the future of automotive careers at Central Community College.

Strategic Moves, Big Investments and Never a Dull Moment
What do crime scenes, piano keys, Smoking Cheetos, website launches, strategic staffing, feasibility studies, scholarships, inclusive playgrounds, and organizing a major gifts campaign for a new Automotive Careers Training Center all have in common? If you guessed they were part of the 2023-2024 year at Central Community College Foundation, you’d be right. It’s been a whirlwind of activity and growth — never a dull moment!

If you’re like me, you need to know more right now about the Cheetos. Let’s start there. We kicked off the school year at the Hastings Campus with our Community Appreciation Night, the Ram Run, and the CCC Car Show. Among the culinary delights were “Smoking Cheetos,” crafted by CCC’s talented Culinary Arts students. The secret? Liquid nitrogen. While the Cheetos freeze, they don’t change in flavor, and they release “smoke” as you chew. An unforgettable experience.
In September, the Foundation concluded a feasibility study for the Automotive Careers Training Center, also on the Hastings Campus. With favorable results, the Foundation Board gave the green light to launch a major gifts campaign in support of the project. By January, we had formed an executive leadership team to spearhead this transformative effort.
In Columbus, we had the privilege of fundraising for a new Steinway grand piano. This remarkable addition will enhance music education and enrich performances for both students and the community for years to come.
April brought even more excitement as we partnered with Hornady Manufacturing to announce the Hornady Criminal Justice Fund, a $750,000 investment in scholarships and grants for CCC Criminal Justice students. To commemorate this partnership, CCC officially named its lab space the Hornady Crime House.
On May 1, we marked the completion of a truly extraordinary project: the Pirnie Inclusive Playground in Grand Island. Originally conceived as part of a CCC Occupational Therapy Assistant course, this project blossomed into a reality after three years, over 260 donors, and $1.6 million in funding. The result? A 27,000-square-foot playground at Ryder Park, designed to be accessible for all. I was so excited I forgot to ask if we got an “A” on the assignment.
Meanwhile, we’ve been busy behind the scenes strengthening our internal structure to better support our mission. We welcomed new team members, refined roles, launched a brand-new website, and introduced fresh strategies to connect with donors and alumni. We also said farewell to longtime board members Gale Beirow (Hastings) and Dale Pohlman (Kearney), and warmly welcomed Jay Landell from Hastings to our Board.
Through it all, we never lost focus on supporting Central Community College. Our annual fundraising events — such as the board/employee appeal, ProAm Golf Tournament, and our Year-End campaign—were great successes. We also worked with individual donors to establish legacy scholarships and grant-making funds, and we continue to develop long-term investments through our Generations of Impact Campaign.
It’s been a packed year — and it’s only my second! The Foundation Board has already approved our 2024-2025 work plan, and we’re gearing up for another exciting year of growth, engagement, and impact. Big investments and opportunities are on the horizon, but none of it happens without YOU, our donors. You are the heart of CCC and your support is the common thread that runs through everything we do. It’s a true honor to work alongside such dedicated partners. Together we are making an incredible difference in the lives of our students and communities. We can’t wait to continue this journey with you!
