“When complete, the facility will service and maintain more than 500 train carriages being delivered by the NSW Government as part of the new Intercity Fleet project,” he said.

“The new fleet will provide more reliable and comfortable journeys for customers travelling to and from the Central Coast, Newcastle, Blue Mountains and South Coast.

“The transition to major construction, including site clearing and piling, is now underway,” Mr MacDonald said.

“The $300m investment in the maintenance facility at Kangy Angy is expected to create 300 positions during construction, and 200 positions in operation, for the Central Coast,” he said.

The application was lodged in 2017 as part of works to accommodate the Amphibian Aerospace Industries’ (AAI) hangar within the Central Coast Airport site at Warnervale.

However, Council cleared the land prior to even lodging the DA. The reasons for the refusal were that the proposal would have had an unacceptable impact on Endangered Ecological Communities (EECs) under the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, and the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995.

Council’s reasons for refusal also included that

“no development control plan (DCP) applies to the site to allow for the development application to be approved, as required by Clause 6.3 of the Wyong Local Environmental Plan 2013.

“The proposed development would not be in the public interest as it pre-empts the Biocertification process underway and detailed planning required for the area under Section 79C(1) (e) of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979,” the refusal letter said.

Amphibian Aerospace Industries intended to establish an amphibious aircraft manufacturing business on the site.

According to the Landrum and Brown Central Coast Aviation Hub Planning Summary, tabled at the November 27 meeting of Central Coast Council, AAI would construct, at their cost, hangars and ancillary buildings to support the business.

The community and key stakeholders will be consulted on the detailed design as this project moves forward.

The build is expected to get underway in January 2019 and will take 18 months.

Four community representatives spoke against the motion to rescind the Council’s April 10 resolution to choose the old Broadwater Hotel as the site for the RPAC. They were Mr Kevin Armstrong from Gosford Waterfront Alliance, local

Holstein and seconded by Clr Chris Burke.

Clr Holstein said he had used rescission motions on five occasions in his 25 years in local government.

Arguing in favour of the motion, Clr Holstein said the budget for the RPAC was short by $20m, and that money from the sale of the Old Broadwater Hotel could be used to contribute to the building of the RPACC on another site.

“I believe we need to have a waterfront that is active... is there anybody here who can say that the waterfront is an inappropriate site for a RPACC?” Clr Holstein said in conclusion.

G Wamberal and Terrigal Beaches both thought to be contaminated with asbestos

T

he NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and Central Coast Council do not believe there is any need to close Wamberal or Terrigal Beaches, but, Mr Pat Aiken, from Coastal Residents’ Association, said his message to the public is “don’t go there”.

The EPA issued a statement in response to questions about the safety of Terrigal and Wamberal Beaches following recent asbestos findings.

“The NSW EPA is aware of the asbestos issue at Wamberal and Terrigal Beaches; Central Coast Council is the responsible authority for this matter,” the statement said.

“The EPA has met with

Council about this matter to ensure asbestos is being appropriately managed.

“Council has committed to undertake regular inspections of the affected areas and ensure any exposed asbestos is removed,” the statement said.

“Don’t go there,” Mr Aiken said in response to the position taken by Council and the EPA. “Don’t let your kids go there,” he said.

“I have had the material tested, and I have no doubt in my mind that it is absolutely bonded asbestos.

“Bonded asbestos is comparatively safe in situ as cladding on a roof or a wall lining in older houses, but once it becomes damaged and the fibres are exposed, then it becomes friable.

“In this case, small pieces of asbestos cement, some quite

large in size, have gone into the surf, been rumbled around for, and we know it must be, at least two years, and now it is appearing on the beach.

“It most likely came in as the beach recovered, so can anyone tell me that the particles, the fibres, didn’t come up with the sand as well, and dry?

“You don’t want to take that risk with children, because if at some stage down the track, they close the beach and decontaminate it, all those people who have been on the beach should be able to register as people who have been exposed to asbestos,” Mr Aiken said.

Mr Aiken said he identified the asbestos at Wamberal in November 2016.

One of the Peninsula’s libraries could be closed, discussion at the latest meeting of Central Coast Council has revealed.

Cr Troy Marquart raised the possibility of library closures on the Peninsula as part of Council’s debate about the long-promised regional library proposed for Gosford.

Cr Greg Best said he recalled Council director Ms Julie Vaughan previously “outlining to this chamber that Umina and Woy Woy would merge”.

Ms Vaughan said she had been referring to an independent

study commissioned by the former Gosford Council in 2015.

“The question was did that report recommend any closures, and I clarified certain recommendations within that report particularly in relation to Peninsula,” she said.

According to Ms Vaughan, those recommendations were based on the perception that Woy Woy and Umina libraries did not adequately address the community’s needs.

“One option was to explore rationalisation but further library service reviews would be needed to streamline services,” she said.

“Are you saying no libraries will shut down?” Cr Marquart asked.

“As I have said to Cr Best earlier, the former report identified that there was an under-servicing at a base line level [on the Peninsula] so the expectation is services would not be reduced but we would just look at better ways to meet the community’s needs.”

“They are two different questions,” Ms Vaughan said.

“The development of the regional library is not dependent on closures,” she said.

“There have been reviews

done earlier, and it is something that would need to be done in consultation with the community,” she said.

She pointed out that Council was “currently doing quite a lot of work at Woy Woy Library” which it was unlikely to be undertaking if the intention was to close the library.

Cr Lisa Matthews then asked Ms Vaughan to confirm that “any closure of any library would have to come through the chamber”.

Ms Vaughan responded that was correct to which Cr Matthews said she was certain the majority of councillors would not be voting in favour of any library closures.

Ms Vaughan said it was “misinformation” that either Woy Woy or Umina Library could close to make way for the building of a new regional library in Gosford.

“I do reiterate the regional library and development of that is not dependent on closure of any other libraries,” she said.

“It gives me great pleasure to clarify the misinformation, and state that the development of the regional library is not dependent on the closure of any other libraries,” Ms Vaughan said.

Wicks told ACCC ‘cannot act’ on petrol prices The Australian Consumer and Competition Commission has told the Member for Robertson Ms Lucy Wicks that it cannot act on the Peninsula’s inflated petrol prices.

It would only be able to intervene where there was evidence of illegal anti-competitive behaviour.

Ms Wicks said she had written to over 1000 residents who had signed her petition on petrol

prices outlining the Commission’s response.

“Your voice has seen the competition watchdog take a close look at the petrol price issues you’ve raised on the Central Coast,” Ms Wicks said in her letter to petition respondents.

According to Ms Wicks, the Commission found that the average cost of regular unleaded petrol across the Central Coast market was 136 cents per litre

in March 2018 which was, on average, three cents per litre lower than Newcastle’s average price for the same time period.

“They also did a spot check at Woy Woy and Gosford, which found as much as a 15 cents per litre difference between the highest and lowest E10 prices,” Ms Wicks said.

The Peninsula News has been tracking fuel prices for over 12 months and has found price

differences as high as 35 cents per litre.

Ms Wicks said it was disappointing that the Commission would only take action if presented with evidence of anti-competitive behaviour.

“While this may be disappointing, we can work together to take action now by using widely available information on where the cheapest prices are on the Coast.

“There are a few apps and

websites, like Fuel Check, which helps to find cheaper petrol and rewards retailers where the prices are lowest,” she said.

Meanwhile, the State Member for Gosford, Ms Liesl Tesch, said she would continue to urge Peninsula residents to exercise their consumer rights and, where possible, purchase cheaper petrol in nearby West Gosford.

On April 11 the Council resolved to build a stand-alone regional library in Donnison St, even though the majority of community participants in an online survey had voted for a library integrated with a commercial building.

A rescission motion at the April 23 Central Coast Council meeting was successful, and that earlier decision was reversed.

However, after a scrappy and directionless debate, Councillors once again deferred a final decision on the location and form of the new library.

It is understood that the absence of one councillor at the May 28 meeting, and a change to the voting status of another, may result in a third option making it over the line, which would see the regional library built in Donnison St, with commercial space, and guarantees to ensure the project’s financial viability.

Mayor Jane Smith is not in favour of such a proposal and has expressed concerns that a library integrated with commercial space could represent a financial risk to Council.

All Councillors voted in favour of the rescission motion except, Mayor Jane Smith and Clr Louise Greenaway, and Clr Doug Vincent was absent.

“This catalyst project for the CBD must be a central meeting point for locals and visitors alike, creating a true innovation centre and drawcard to the city centre,” she said.

“Libraries are at the heart of creating liveable, connected and sustainable cities, and that is definitely what we want to see for the Gosford CBD.”

After the meeting, Mayor Smith said she was concerned about the financial risks involved in committing to build commercial space with so much private development coming on line in the CBD and surrounds.

“With some major projects, such as RPAC and the library, I don’t want to overextend without sufficient guarantee that funding will be forthcoming,” Mayor Smith said.

“Right around NSW there are stories of councils that have been a little ambitious and have come down with over extending, and I am a little cautious about our risk management.

“I think a regional library is a great project for the Central Coast, and for Gosford’s city centre in particular, so really, my specific concern is about the financial risk and making sure we have got that covered,” she said.

“We have got some large

projects, and whenever we put up a large amount of money, that means that we are not putting it up on something else, and we need to ensure it will be successful.”

On April 11, Councillors had voted in favour of the standalone library option, wholly on Council-owned land, at 123A Donnision Street.

The building was to be redesigned to accommodate possible additional levels of commercial development if further funding was secured.

However, a rescission motion to reverse Council’s decision was put forward by Councillors Greg Best, Bruce McLachlan, Jilly Pilon, Rebecca Gale Collins and Troy Marquart, for the April 23 ordinary Council meeting.

Mr Tony Mylan, from ET Australia, which is a current tenant of the 123A Donnison St property and owns the adjoining building, spoke against the rescission motion.

“It puts further stress and concern on all of the people involved in this development,” Mr Mylan said.

“The description in the rescission motion of this being ad hoc I find a bit peculiar, because I have been working with Gosford Council and Central Coast Council for three years, and it has been anything other than ad hoc.

“I commend staff, directors and the Acting CEO for the work they have been doing negotiating and consulting with us and the general public.”

Mr Mylan pointed out that 70 per cent of respondents to a survey about the library were in favour of Concept 2, a library combined with commercial space built across the Council and ET’s building site.

“Despite public support for Concept 2, Council voted for Concept 1.

“I am at a loss to the politics, but I wanted to indicate to the

meeting this evening that the rescission motion has some general points in it that leave ET Australia and other tenants with no timeline as to what might happen next, unsure what to do with tenants in the building, how it will impact on the school year, how it will impact tenants.

“It will leave us with more questions than we had before this evening.”

He said he appreciated Council’s willingness to vary Concept 1 so that all current Parkside tenants would be accommodated.

Clr Jillian Hogan asked Mr Mylan to explain the impact the rescission motion was having on the tenants, many of whom were community service providers.

“We have a tenant in that building whose lease expires on November 30, and we have been exchanging correspondence about an extension to the lease, and our tenants, who are a state government department, are extremely keen to extend the lease.

“They wish to have a five year lease with a five year option, so they can refit and refurbish their premises.

“We have been giving them a please wait response.

“We wrote to Council asking for a timeline for development, indicating why we needed to do that, and as a result of that, we have now entered negotiations with the state government department to extend their lease.

“If we do that, the space in Donnison St, and the car park, would be tied up for the next 10 years.

A rescission motion, to move the site to Poppy Park instead, was lost, with the Mayor using her casting vote to confirm that the RPACC will be built as part of a cultural precinct, starting at 51-71 Mann Street (Old Broadwater Hotel site).

Mayor Jane Smith said that with the discussion and debate now finalised, it was time to work together with the community and the State and Federal Governments to ensure that this key project is delivered.

Rate rise and tiny surplus in historic Council budget esidents and ratepayers have one month to comment on a draft of the historic first combined Central Coast Council Delivery Program and Operational Plan for the 2018-19 financial year.

The 2018-19 Draft Delivery Program, Operational Plan including the budget and draft Resourcing Strategy are among a suite of documents Council has placed on exhibition for public comment after being endorsed at the May 14 Council meeting.

Council aims to achieve a tiny surplus of $64,000 but an average ratepayer from the old Wyong LGA will see their rates go up by $33.50 for the year.

Mayor Jane Smith said it was now the community’s opportunity to write to Council to let them know where they’ve got it right and wrong before the plan was adopted and rates officially set on June 25.

Council’s plan aims to deliver $561.5 million in essential services and $199.8 million in capital works in priority areas from the Community Strategic Plan (CSP).

The first operational plan of the new Central Coast Council is now on exhibition for public comment facilities, open space and recreation.

Mayor Smith said the draft plan was the beginning of an evolving culture within Council that was more responsive to, and better reflected, community priorities and aspirations in line with the CSP. “This is our contract with the community,” Mayor Smith said.

“It details every project and initiative we will deliver over the next year with a strong focus on financial and environmental sustainability,” she said.

“We will be delivering just a small surplus, $64,000, as we want to invest every dollar we can on delivering the services and infrastructure our growing community have told us they need, want and value.”

It is proposed that 78 per cent of operating and capital expenditure will be invested in the following priority areas: roads, transport and drainage ($186.92 million or 24.6 per cent of total spend).

Water and sewer will see a $196.12 million total spend or 25.8 per cent of budgeted funds.

Waste services and business development have been allocated a total $89.92 million or 11.8 per cent of total spend.

have been given a total budget of $18.2 million or 2.4 per cent of total spend; learning and education $9.46 million or 1.2 per cent; and libraries $11.36 million or 1.5 per cent.

A rate path freeze for merged councils still applies for Central Coast Council.

This means Council is required to maintain the rate path that was last applied by the former Gosford and Wyong Councils until June 30, 2020.

The freeze in the rate path is not a freeze on the amount Council can levy by way of rates.

The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has approved an annual rate peg increase so Council’s permissible rates income for 2018-19 is the sum of the rates income for each of the former local government areas, as if the amalgamation had

not occurred, plus the allowable rate peg.

For 2018-19 IPART approved a rate peg of 2.3 per cent.

The rates and annual charges applicable to a residence in the former Wyong LGA with an average unimproved land value will increase $33.50 or 1.4 per cent in 2018-19 which is made up of a $22.55 increase in ordinary rates and an $11 increase in domestic waste charges.

Maps showing the parts of the Local Government Area to which each category and subcategory of ordinary and special rates proposed will be available at the Council’s Wyong office (and Gosford office).

Final adoption of the plan and making of rates and charges will take place at the June 25 Council meeting.

Council has encouraged the community to make submissions on the draft plans via yourvoiceourcoast.com, Council libraries and offices at Wyong and Gosford.

Submissions will be received up until 5:00pm on Thursday, June 14.

Central Coast Council has agreed to apply for 50-50 funding to dredge Ettalong Channel following a fortnight of sustained community and political pressure, which saw 400 residents attend a meeting at Ettalong.

The Council has also called, again, for the NSW Government to complete another round of emergency dredging to ensure the navigation channel is at least restored, temporarily, to a navigable state.

The indefinite cancellation of ferry services to Ettalong and Wagstaffe prompted a wellattended community meeting at Ettalong Diggers on May 10.

Following the meeting, chaired by Diggers chief Mr Bill Jackson, Central Coast mayor and councillors were advised of a motion calling for “joint funding by Council and State Government for dredging of the Ettalong Channel area this month”.

“A meeting attended by over 400 people was held at the Ettalong Diggers Club tonight, called by Ettalong Diggers, to discuss the problems caused by the suspension of the ferry service to Ettalong and Wagstaffe, and its diversion to Patonga,” Mr Jackson said in his post-meeting letter to Councillors.

“It is requested that Council consider this matter at its meeting to be held on Monday, May 14,” the letter said.

“The following motion was passed unanimously by those present at the meeting, for consideration at the Council meeting next Monday (motion proposed by Ms Peta Colebatch, seconded by Mr Peter Mote): That this meeting requests both the State Government and the Central Coast Council to work together to fund immediate dredging works (this month) so that the ferry service to Ettalong and Wagstaffe can resume (the Council to submit a compliant application for funding to the State Government next week); and that this meeting requests that in the longer term, a working party of stakeholders assess the appropriate approach for the future, looking at maintenance dredging, technical issues, environmental implications, community impacts (including work, tourism, educational issues), and funding.

made at the meeting, some concerning different viewpoints on funding responsibility.

“However the community strongly expressed the need for immediate action so that normal ferry services can be resumed.

“People at Patonga are having difficulties also, from the presence of the ferry there and the impact of parking.

“And there are major tourism, business, recreation, family, and educational impacts, with people’s work being curtailed (for example, builders using the ferry to get to Palm Beach) and family visits also being stopped.”

It was standing room only in the Gosford Chamber of Central Coast Council on Monday, May 14, as the community rallied to support the Ettalong meeting’s call for an immediate end to the impasse between Council and the State Government.

An urgency motion was circulated to members of the public and media but, according to Central Coast Council Mayor Cr Jane Smith, none of the councillors had informed her that there was an urgency motion to be put.

The meeting proceeded according to the agenda, frustrating the packed gallery until Cr Greg Best announced there was an urgency motion but left it to Cr Rebecca Gale Collins to move the motion.

The debate was heated and frustrating with loud interjections from the public gallery leading to Cr Smith calling for a 15-minute recess.

Gosford West Ward Councillor Richard Mehrtens utilised the recess to write an amendment which he said better reflected the sentiment of the community meeting than the urgency motion that Cr Gale Collins put to the meeting, understood to have been written by Cr Greg Best.

“We finally moved a motion that the dredging of the channel was a State Government matter so we are still holding the government to that standard and the majority of councillors still have that same belief,” Clr Mehrtens told Peninsula News following the meeting.

“Now what the Council is doing is being the more responsible level of government on this while the State is still throwing up road blocks,” he said.

“This is a thing that was made very obvious at the Council meeting on Monday night, the State Government has the authority to dredge this channel, which is Crown Land, whenever it chooses to do so, it owns a dredge and on two occasions in the past 12 months it came in one day, did its scraping and left,” he said.

According to Cr Mehrtens the Council’s decision to apply for 5050 funding under the Rescuing

Our Waterways program would not provide an adequate solution to the problems facing the entrance to Brisbane Water.

“The funding available is completely inadequate and that was one of the reasons we were reticent to support applying under Rescuing Our Waterways,” he said.

According to Council the maximum that can be applied for by the state is $1.3 million and it may take until January 2019 for the outcome of the 50-50 application to be known.

However, Councillors have been informed by staff that the annual cost of maintaining the channel is more than the total $3 million that would be made available via a 5050 agreement and then it would be at the mercy of the State to provide the funding annually.

“We do need a longer term program for this waterway, otherwise the State Government will be holding Central Coast Council to ransom every year.

“If we received $400,000 one year and then missed a year it would take more than $800,000 the following year to get it back to an acceptable standard.

“We have no guarantee we will get the maximum $1.3 million when the maximum available for all coastal councils is $6 million and we are up against 13 other councils,” Cr Mehrtens said.

“The North Coast has a specific list item for dredging in the State Budget each year but we have to sit here and wait.

“I can’t understand how anyone can say it is not a navigable waterway when it is a public transport corridor.

“My interpretation of the community meeting at the Diggers was the long term solution was a State Government responsibility but short term people wanted to see Council apply for the funding.

“They were annoyed by the stalemate and wanted to get it done, with the State Government being obstinate.

“A change of government was the only way the meeting believed the State would take responsibility.

“As Cr Bruce McLachlan told the community meeting, the State Government was not going to move on this,” he said.

Cr McLachlan along with Crs Jilly Pilon, Gale Collins and Mehrtens spoke at the community meeting.

“I said I would be happy to look at any motion for 50-50 funding but it also had to request that the State Government pay for emergency dredging as an act of good faith,” he said.

“We arrived at Council on Monday night under the impression there would be an emergency motion but when the Mayor asked each of the councillors she was told ‘no’.

“When Cr Best arrived later the Mayor also asked him and he replied ‘no’ but they were planning to introduce the motion the entire time and to do so without any notice, without allowing the other councillors time to read it was incendiary.

“It didn’t reflect the motion that Bill Jackson and the public meeting had decided on so it was necessary to introduce an amendment to get something agreeable but it is not a long-term solution,” Cr Mehrtens said.

‘Christianist’ terrorists invade Gosford Anglican Church

St Hilliers’ development reaches major milestone

osford Anglican Church was invaded by a group of alleged ultranationalist neo-Nazis.

On May 19, The Church’s Saturday night mass was interrupted by five Melbourne men, belonging to Nationalist far right group, the Cooks Convicts.

One of the men entered the congregation wielding a whip, whilst another was brandishing a fake sword, according to Fr Rod Bower.

“This was an extremely traumatising event,” said Fr Bower.

“Fortunately, many regular parishioners were absent, so the devastation was somewhat minimised.

“This was in my view a terrorist attack.

“One cannot imagine that had these men been Muslims, they would have been allowed to walk away from this act of violence and intimidation,” Fr Bower said.

“These people are to Christianity what Isis is to Islam.

“This attack shows how far we have gone down the road of right wing extremism.

“Such an attack on a church could not have been imagined only a few years ago,” he added.

The Cooks Convicts filmed the incident and posted the video to their Facebook page.

The footage begins by condemning Fr Bower’s left wing and at times controversial approach to teaching the Christian faith.

This commences with a monologue, believed to have been recorded by Cooks Convict leader and the instigator of the May 19 Church incident, Mr Neil Erikson.

riday, May 25, will mark a milestone for property development and construction company St Hilliers, with its 32 Mann St development in Gosford reaching the highest point in the building of the structure.

Mr Erikson said Fr Bower had been “Pissing a lot of people off, especially Christians.

“He claims to be a Christian, but as Jesus always said, many will come in my name and Rod Bower’s one of them.

“He supports gay marriage, he supports Sharia Law, he blesses the Burqa and he disrespects our ANZACS. “Rod Bower gives all of his worship to his ego,” Mr Erikson said.

Following these statements, the video shows the Cooks Convicts interrupting Fr Bower’s service.

The congregation is shown to be visibly disturbed by the intrusion, with one woman screaming in fear, as Mr Erikson, dressed as Jesus, and the other Cooks Convicts, enter the chapel.

In the footage, Fr Bower is shown to ask the men to leave, whilst Mr Erikson, through a megaphone, proclaims: “What have you done to my house?

“You have desecrated my father’s house,” Mr Erikson

was seen to say before Fr Bower and his congregation began singing a hymn until the Cooks Convicts left.

Mr Erikson was then filmed in front of the Church’s letter board, which frequently features some of Fr Bower’s more controversial messages and teachings, cracking a whip.

He then continued his tirade and attack on Fr Bower’s character.

Still invoking the image of Jesus Christ, Mr Erikson is seen to say: “What you have done to the Christian church is unforgiveable.

“You have desecrated the house of God. “This man is a traitor to his religion.

“He’s a traitor to my father’s house.

“This man is a media harlot; he doesn’t care for me or my father.

The matter is now in the hands of Gosford Police and the church is conducting yet another security review.

This follows a similar confrontation in August, 2016, where members of the now defunct Party for Freedom, disrupted a sermon, dressed in traditional Muslim garb.

Mr Erikson was one of the members of the Party for Freedom that took part in the 2016 Church raid as well.

Following the incident, Fr Bower wrote on the Parish’s Facebook page: “We will not be silenced.

“These ‘Christianist’ terrorists used violence and intimidation to try and silence our message of love and inclusion,” he wrote.

On May 21, the Church’s letter board had changed to “We’re into hail Marys, not heil Hitlers.”

Fr Bower will appear on the panel on the ABC’s Q&A on Monday, May 28.

Work underway on Intercity its own land Fleet Maintenance Facility but it has despite community objections refused to approve the clearance

arliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast, Mr Scot MacDonald, performed a sod turn to mark the start of major construction of the new Intercity Fleet Maintenance Facility at Kangy Angy.

He said the project would boost employment and skills on the Central Coast.

“When complete, the facility will service and maintain more than 500 train carriages being delivered by the NSW Government as part of the new Intercity Fleet project,” he said.

“The new fleet will provide more reliable and comfortable journeys for customers travelling to and from the Central Coast, Newcastle, Blue Mountains and South Coast.

“The transition to major construction, including site clearing and piling, is now underway,” Mr MacDonald said.

“The $300m investment in the maintenance facility at Kangy Angy is expected to create 300 positions during construction, and 200 positions in operation, for the Central Coast,” he said.

The application was lodged in 2017 as part of works to accommodate the Amphibian Aerospace Industries’ (AAI) hangar within the Central Coast Airport site at Warnervale.

However, Council cleared the land prior to even lodging the DA. The reasons for the refusal were that the proposal would have had an unacceptable impact on Endangered Ecological Communities (EECs) under the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, and the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995.

Council’s reasons for refusal also included that

“no development control plan (DCP) applies to the site to allow for the development application to be approved, as required by Clause 6.3 of the Wyong Local Environmental Plan 2013.

“The proposed development would not be in the public interest as it pre-empts the Biocertification process underway and detailed planning required for the area under Section 79C(1) (e) of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979,” the refusal letter said.

Amphibian Aerospace Industries intended to establish an amphibious aircraft manufacturing business on the site.

According to the Landrum and Brown Central Coast Aviation Hub Planning Summary, tabled at the November 27 meeting of Central Coast Council, AAI would construct, at their cost, hangars and ancillary buildings to support the business.

AAI is the holder of the US Federal Aviation Administration Type Certificate for HU-16 and G11 Albatross militaryutility aircraft, and G-111 Models A-E Albatross civilian aircraft.

On securing the intellectual property rights associated with the

FAA Type Certificates, AAI launched Project Amphibian to refit existing Albatross aircraft and manufacture new Albatross.

Wyong Regional Chronicle asked Central Coast Council to outline the status of its contract with AAI. In a written response, Council said: “Discussions between Council and AAI are confidential.

“Council will not make further public comment

on those discussions.”

Central Coast Council also confirmed that the resolution it made on November 27 in relation to the Airport stands.

It confirmed Council’s support for the Warnervale Airport Restrictions Act and resolved to suspend all works, land acquisitions and expenditure on the Airport, except if required by law.

The DA for the land clearing was lodged by Central Coast Council retrospectively, that is after it had cleared the native vegetation at 140 Sparks Rd. In addition to clearing the E2 land without seeking consent, Council did not rezone E2 to IN1 prior to undertaking the clearing work to pave the way for industrial development.

Silt fences were not installed during the clearing work.

Around 8,000 square metres of E2 land was

cleared.

The former Wyong Council studied the area at 140 Sparks Rd in the WEZ Biocertification Report of 2007 and that study identified the threatened Melaleauca Biconvexa is present on the site.

The site was purchased

by Council in 2016-17 in the full knowledge that it contained Biconvexa and that full development may be constrained by that species.

Biconvexa is known as existing on the E2, IN1 boundary, an area believed to be have been cleared by Council.

On July 13, 2016, Council resolved to undertake a Biodiversity Certification Project which included the 140 Sparks Rd property, despite much of the land having already been studied as part of the 2007 WEZ Biocertification.

Council votes to support legal proce unding of $200,000 will be provided by Central Coast Council to the Australian Coal Alliance (ACA) to engage experts to support its Land and Environment Court (LEC) proceedings against the Wallarah 2 coal mine.

Clr Kyle MacGregor put the motion, which will support the Australian Coal Alliance’s LEC judicial review proceedings to challenge the consent for the mine granted by the NSW Government’s Planning Assessment Commission (PAC).

Councillors made the decision to back the ACA following Council’s receipt of its own legal advice, kept confidential, from three sources: Ian Hemmings SC, Ms Kate Lindeman and, form Council’s own Senior

Counsel, Mr Martin Ball.

“The Hemmings Advice and the Ball Advice each contain legal advice to Council by highly experienced legal practitioners,” a staff report to the May 28 Council meeting said.

Council resolved not to commence similar and overlapping judicial review proceedings, and not to seek leave to intervene in the existing proceedings.

The $200,000 to be provided to ACA will be for “the specific purpose of engaging a suitable expert(s) to provide evidence in the proceedings in respect of the issues of concern to the Council, noting leave must first be granted in the judicial review proceedings for such expert evidence to be presented.”

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Brian Glendenning, will enter an agreement with

ACA, and, if necessary, the solicitors acting for ACA, that provides for proper and transparent accounting of the funding

by Council, and the return of any funding that ACA might be able to recover through a costs order in its favour.

Councillor MacGregor said the funding was “a small price to pay to fight to protect our water catchment supply and other Council infrastructure that would be impacted by this mine.”

The Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) approved, under delegated authority, the Wyong Areas Coal Joint Venture’s (WACJV) proposed coalmine beneath the Central Coast’s major water catchment supply area, on January 17.

Merit appeal on the decision is no longer available, but a challenge to the validity of the

approval can be made under judicial review.

The Australian Coal Alliance (ACA), the community group that has spearheaded opposition to the mine project for more than 20 years, lodged its challenge to the validity of the approval on errors of law.

A summons was served on Wyong Coal Pty Ltd, the mine proponents, KORES Australia Pty Ltd and the Minister for Planning, on April 16, commencing action in the LEC. “It is the ACA who has now been left with the task to continue the fight, through the courts, to protect our water catchment supply district, the billion-dollar water infrastructure of Council’s water corporation, and other Council infrastructure, from the destructive impact of a longwall coalmine,” Clr MacGregor said.

“The ACA commenced this action … because it is in the public interest to ensure that major projects in NSW are assessed and approved

by Government decision makers in accordance with all relevant laws and policies, and that the environment, including Central Coast’s water supply, is protected for the use and enjoyment of current and future generations.

“Council has supported the ACA and the community in its opposition to the WACJV coal project for 12 years, and Council has spent considerable funds on expert reports that have validated its continuing opposition to the WACJV coalmine project.

“The community would expect nothing less than Council to continue its support of the ACA. “It indeed behoves Council to do so.”

In an interview prior

to the meeting, Clr MacGregor, said: “The whole point of the motion is to support the community in maintaining the position Council has always had.

“It is about protecting our water supply and making sure that decisions made in the past have been reached correctly, and if there is anything wrong with that process, it will come out during the LEC,” he said.

After the vote, Mayor Jane Smith, said she was very pleased that the majority of Councillors supported the allocation of $200,000 to assist ACA in their legal challenge to engage experts.

She said the former Wyong and Gosford Councils had consistently, and often unanimously, opposed the mine.

“So it was disappointing to see some fracturing of that unanimous position,” she said.

“I also want to commend ACA for its continued opposition and consistent efforts in opposing the mine.”

Mr Mike Campbell, of the Australian Coal Alliance, told Council that Senior Counsel had advised ACA that its prospects of success were extremely good.

“The process that the Environmental Defenders Office follows is simple.

“It decided that there were grounds to challenge, but it was only then upon Senior Counsel advice that the EDO was prepared to challenge the mine,” Mr Campbell said.

He said $200,000 was a small contribution “considering what is at stake.

“In almost 23 years, we have never asked Council

“We always thought that if it got to this point, we would seek funds from Council, as our legal costs are sizeable,” he said.

“This motion is not about whether one does or does not support the coal mine, it is about spending $200,000 to support one particular group,” Clr Gale Collins said, and described the motion as “outrageous”.

Clr Marquart said: “I am not sure this is a motion, I think it is raw emotion.”

“No, so now the Council has to provide funding to support a community association to fight to stop the mine.

“Now we are having to spend local government money to do what the

Mr Alan Hayes from the Australian Coal Alliance said: “I am very disappointed at the four Liberal Councillors that they don’t see it as important to protect the Central Coast water supply.

“After all, I am sure they turn a tap on when they want a drink of water or they want to shower or flush a toilet.

“They just want to toe the party line of a dishonest and untrustworthy government,” Mr Hayes said.

“Council has expended huge amounts of money to engage the best experts in the country, and the answer has always been that this mine would be an unmitigated disaster,” he said.

consideration, under the Mining SEPP and the EP&A Act. “This is a unique case that will never probably raise its head again on the Central Coast.

“At the end of the day, the ACA and the time that its members have put into this is not about any accolades or pecuniary benefits, it is not about anything else but protecting what we enjoy today, what past generations have enjoyed, and what future generations are entitled to enjoy.

Seismic testing should be stopped until lax regulations are addressed T

he NSW Parliament has called on the Federal Government to suspend Asset Energy’s licence for any further offshore petroleum activity in the waters off the Central Coast, until concerns raised about lax commonwealth regulations have been addressed.

The motion, proposed

by The Greens Member of the Legislative Council, Mr Justin Field, said that Asset Energy conducted seismic testing for gas off the coast of Newcastle and the Central Coast in April.

“The licence area, Petroleum Exploration Permit 11, covers an area off the NSW coastline from Sydney’s Northern Beaches to Stockton,” Mr Field’s motion said.

“Seismic testing involves underwater blasts that can impact the health of whales, dolphins and other marine animals.

“It is understood that the company is expecting results from the testing within the next two months, and plans to start drilling in 2019.

“The community,

A recent ‘hands across the sand” event at Newcastle’s Nobby’s Beach against the seismic testing including concerned individuals, commercial fishers and tourism operators, expressed strong opposition to the testing, and the NSW Minister for Resources, Mr Don Harwin, expressed concerns that the regulatory regime under which the approval and testing occurred is not at a high enough standard.

“This House calls on the Federal Government to suspend further consideration of applications for PEP11 until such time as the regulations for offshore petroleum exploration and production have been reviewed, in light of the concerns expressed by the Minister for Resources,” the motion concluded.

In April, in response to a question on notice

from Mr Field, Mr Harwin said he lacked confidence in Australia’s current offshore mining regulations.

According to Mr Field, the company’s timeline of proposed activity includes conducting more invasive 3D seismic testing this year, and plans for digging exploratory wells off the NSW coast in 2019.

Mr Field said the Federal Government should acknowledge the NSW Government’s concern with inadequate offshore petroleum regulations and suspend Asset Energy’s PEP11 licence for offshore oil and gas exploration and production.

“Seismic testing … caught the community by surprise, but they’re now united in demanding no oil or gas fields off the

NSW Coast,” he said.

“The community simply won’t accept it, despite industry trying to bully the government into approving these risky projects.

“The Greens welcome the NSW Parliament’s strong stand in support of a pause on Asset Energy’s licence, but it doesn’t go far enough.

“The Greens ultimately want offshore petroleum activities banned.

“We need to keep fossil fuels in the ground to mitigate the worst consequences of climate disruption.

“The New Zealand government recently announced a ban on new oil and gas exploration in its waters.

“The Federal Government should follow its example and do the same here.

“Our oceans are special places for people’s enjoyment, a source of sustainable seafood, and a precious home for whales and other marine life.

“The Federal Government must not give in to the vested interests of the fossil fuel industry, pushing for oil and gas development off our coast at any cost,” he said.

Wyong Regional Chronicle has asked the Federal Member for Robertson, Ms Lucy Wicks, Some days ago, whether or not she would support the call of the NSW Parliament for a suspension of the exploration licence.

A response has not been received.

Meanwhile, Mr Gary Blaschke, National President of the Disabled Surfers’ Association, has called on Central Coast Council to form an alliance with other affected local government areas to call for a ban on testing and oil and gas exploration off the NSW coast.

“Having taken thousands of people with profound disabilities for a safe and happy surfing experience for over three decades, from Collaroy Beach to the Hunter,

and all around Australia and New Zealand, any threat to our beaches and way of life becomes a very personal issue,” Mr Blaschke said.

“Senator Matthew Canavan, Minister for Resources, and the Independent advisory body, NOPSEMA, seem to think that potential deaths of whales and dolphins is acceptable, and as low as reasonably practicable,” he said.

“No threat to our whales, dolphins, fish or our way of life, with potential rigs sitting off our iconic beaches, would be accepted by any of our communities.

“Therefore, I am calling on all Councils, from the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Central Coast, Newcastle and Port Stephens, to form an alliance to say no and ban seismic testing, and tell the Australian Federal Government, absolutely no.

“If it was good enough for the New Zealand Government to ban seismic testing, then why isn’t it good enough for Australia?”

Power station demolition application amended

multiple dwelling development has been proposed for vacant land at 42 Alison Rd, Wyong.

The subject site is zoned R3 and the proposal is to develop five affordable single storey courtyard apartments.

According to a Statement of Environmental Effects (SEE) submitted to Central Coast Council in support of the proposal, the multiple dwelling development project would be permissible in the R3 zone with Council consent.

The vacant lot has a size of 945 square metres and a street frontage of 16 metres to Alison Rd. The five apartments, including carports, would have a total site coverage of 431 square metres, or 46 per cent of

the allotment area, and a gross floor area of 317 square metres.

The site is located between a corner commercial development and a single story heritage listed residence.

According to the SEE: “The highest ridge height of the proposed does neither dominate the adjacent heritage residence or the streetscape.

“There are no existing trees on the site to be removed.

“Windows of the neighbouring developments facing the site are minimal and are screened by landscaped courtyards.

“The proposed single storey courtyard apartments have been well setback with views directed to the panorama of the district.

“There is minimal

interruption to views and no loss of privacy to any of the neighbouring residents.

The apartments would be “stepped down the site to cater for the slope toward the rear boundary, thus articulated in length and height incorporating roofed verandas, reducing the bulk and scale of the building.

“Four of the apartments have a courtyard directly off their respective living areas and will have panoramic district views and receive a minimum of three hours unobstructed sunlight during the winter solstice.

“The apartment addressing Alison Rd has a courtyard of approximately 60 square metres directly off the living area.

Central Coast Council has approved the amendment under delegation and the matter was not required to be advertised.

The amended consent will modify the demolition of the former power station, located at 301 Scenic Dve, Colongra, that was approved under DA413/2014.

A condition has been amended to allow dewatering of the eastwest longitudinal cable tunnels.

According to a Central Coast Council assessment report: “The condition was imposed to restrict works in the drainage and cable tunnels and works within the canal lots.

“The restriction of works in the drainage and cable tunnels was due to the contaminated groundwater found in the vicinity of the cable tunnels.

“Following the shutdown of dewatering works at the site between 2014 and 2017, an increase of groundwater levels has resulted in migration of historic hydrocarbon contamination (known as the diesel plume).

“This caused hydrocarbon vapours at the ground surface.

“Reinstatement of managed dewatering of the east-west longitudinal cable tunnels and the collection and treatment of water in the dirty water drainage system appears to have lowered shallow groundwater levels and decreased hydrocarbon vapours at the surface.

“The utility corridors and trenches south of the turbine halls also appear to act as barriers to the diesel plume migration.

“Demolition of the cable tunnels will remove this barrier, allowing the contaminant to spread.

“Therefore the removal and filling of the cable tunnels is to be deferred until further monitoring of the site is undertaken during and after works, to determine the extent of remediation required.

“The dewatering however needs to continue to manage the groundwater.

“As such, condition 2 should have allowed for the continuation of the dewatering of the east-west cable tunnels, however, the modification approved on May 8 did not allow any dewatering to occur.

“This modification will allow Council to rectify this minor error.

DA/413/2014 was approved in October, 2014, for the demolition of the Munmorah Power Station.

DA/413/2014/A was approved on January 14, 2017, for amendments to the demolition of

the Munmorah Power Station.

The amendment was to alter the reporting for noise monitoring controls methods.

DA/413/2014/B was approved on May 8 for amendments to allow below ground demolition works, on-site disposal of asbestos containing materials, and the removal of infrastructure associated with the outlet canal and water reservoirs.

“The modification was approved with the exception of the works in the canal lots and the sealing and filling of the east-west longitudinal cable tunnels.

The latest application for modification of DA413/2014 is ‘C’.

According to the existing consent, Condition 2 read: “This approval does not authorise the: dewatering, sealing and filling drainage and cable tunnels and any other voids; any works within the canal lots.”

The proposed Condition 2 reads: “This approval does not authorise the: sealing and filling of the east-west longitudinal cable tunnels until such time as alternative measures to manage groundwater levels or existing contamination are implemented to the satisfaction of the Environmental Protection Authority; any works within the canal lots.”

Regional Employment Trials Program could have benefits

R

e g i o n a l Development Australia Central Coast (RDACC) has welcomed the recent 2018-19 Federal B u d g e t announcement of an $18.4m Regional Employment Trials Program, as an opportunity to drive economic growth and boost e m p l o y m e n t capabilities on the Central Coast.

The program will be introduced in 10 selected regions across Australia from October 1, with RDACC Chief Executive Officer, Mr John Mouland, calling on local members and government organisations to work together to secure this funding for the region.

“These trials will inform the delivery of future employment services and help us better access localised employment and economic growth opportunities,” said Mr Mouland.

“As part of the program, RDACC will work with

stakeholders, including Central Coast Council, employers, training organisations, not-forprofits, employment service providers and other community organisations to tailor local employment opportunities to best meet our individual needs,” he said.

“It’s imperative that we work together to provide a strong, unified voice for the Central Coast region to successfully secure this funding, that will produce flow-on benefits for our entire community.”

Mr Mouland said the program will support one of the main strategic aims of the Central Coast Food Innovation Project – creating local jobs.

“One of the six strategic deliverables of the Central Coast Food Innovation Initiative is to drive jobs growth in the local food industry and develop the skill base necessary to fill the roles required in future generations.

“Due to the large number of entry level jobs available in our local food, hospitality, logistics and manufacturing sectors,

the Regional Employment Trials Program would effectively support residents to find work locally on the Central Coast in these areas.

“In addition, the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between RDACC, Central Coast Industry Connect (CCIC) and the University of Newcastle, as part of the Food Innovation Project, will allow the Australian Government to partner with three significant regional organisations to deliver this pioneer program.”

A key component of the Regional Employment Trials Program is the $1m Local Employment Initiative Fund, in which stakeholders in selected regions can develop project proposals that help address local employment challenges, for consideration by their local RDA committee.

The 10 successful trial regions will be announced in mid-2018.

Outdoor play area officially opened

ederal Member for Dobell, Ms Emma McBride, said she was delighted to officially open the new outdoor play area at Active Littlies Child Care, Warnervale, on May 25.

Ms McBride previously visited Active Littlies long day care centre with Labor Shadow Minister for Early Childhood and Development, Ms Amanda Rishworth, to talk to centre owners, Mr and Ms Barry and Cheryl Stokeld, about changes to child care subsidies which will be introduced

on July 1.

“When I was there with Amanda, I noticed the outdoor area under construction, and I’m pleased that Barry and Cheryl invited me back for the official opening,” Ms McBride said.

“The littlies were very excited about their new play area; they could hardly wait for me to cut the ribbon.

“It is a fantastic space for them to play and learn.”

The Stokelds have owned Active Littlies for five years.

Ms Stokeld said they were passionate about providing a quality care

environment for children aged 2 to 5 “Our new outdoor area is designed to create optimum learning opportunities for children as they explore, create, imagine and play,” she said.

It includes a fairy garden, mud kitchen, dinosaur rainforest, boat, vegetable patch, Bali hut stage and tepee.

There is also an enclosure for chickens, a rabbit and a guinea pig, as well as lawns and gardens.

Lesley Crawley remembered A

minute’s silence was held for, and two former Wyong Councillors paid tribute to, former long-term council employee, Ms Lesley Crawley, who passed away recently.

Clr Greg Best called

for the minute’s silence, and Clr Lisa Matthews paid tribute to the late Ms Crawley, when Central Coast Council met on May 28.

Ms Crawley would have achieved the milestone of 30 years of employment with Council this September.

An emotional Clr Matthews said: “I rise tonight to offer some condolences to the family of the late Lesley Crawley.”

She said Ms Crawley had started her career with Council as a trainee, and had worked in many facets of the organisation

including rates, health and building, before becoming a senior administrator in the Councillor Services area.

“Lesley became a very valued member of Council’s senior management team,” Clr Matthews said.

“I worked with her

as a colleague and a Councillor.

“I cannot speak highly enough of how professional she was in all aspects of her job.

“She was responsible for inducting Councillors and always tried her best to keep us on track.

“Lesley helped me

transition from staff member to Councillor.

“I would like to pay special tribute to the wonderful person she was and I know she will be missed by many staff and Councillors.”

Federal budget reviewed from a Dobell perspective n a speech to Federal Parliament on May 23, Member for Dobell, Ms Emma McBride, said the 2018-19 Federal Budget was a “budget about winners and losers”.

“No one in my electorate of Dobell is left wondering just who the winners and losers are,” Ms McBride said.

“The winners are clearly high income earners, big business and the big four banks,” she said.

“The losers are young people, pensioners and people living outside of the big cities, in regional communities like mine on the Central Coast.

“The government has pushed on with its plans to deliver an $80b tax cut to big business… at the expense of young people, pensioners and people living outside of big cities.

“The government has failed to properly fund schools, failed to look after older Australians waiting for home care packages and failed younger people.

“This government has continued with its ideologically driven, trickle-down economics, and the flawed notion that giving a tax cut to the wealthiest Australians will benefit other Australians.

“Labor supports the tax changes for low and middle income earners that would come into effect on July 1.

“We support the extension of the $20,000 instant asset write-off for small business and the tax cut for small businesses.

“We support the crackdown on the black economy and multinational tax avoidance and, to some degree, the changes on superannuation.

“I, more than most, as a pharmacist, support the new listings on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

“We would prefer not to be spending billions of taxpayers’ dollars servicing the interest bill on the government’s record debt, which has doubled over the past five years, despite positive global conditions.

“Labor does not believe the policy settings in this budget will mean more jobs or will pay down the debt.

“Some of the assumptions in the budget are a bit rosy, given flat wages and international uncertainty.

“We also have record net debt that is twice what this government inherited and gross debt of over half a trillion dollars.

“It’s important to note

that Labor opposes the tax cuts for big business and high-income earners, not on ideological grounds, but for fiscal and economic reasons: we cannot afford them, and we can do better.

“We want people to have lower taxes so they can spend more on the things they need in local businesses in regional communities like mine.

“We want businesses to have the workers that they need, so we will waive upfront fees to 100,000 TAFE students.

“Labor will rebuild TAFE, a TAFE system that has been hollowed out under this government.

“Labor will ensure bigger income tax cuts for 10 million working Australians.

“Labor will provide tax cuts to everyone who earns up to $120,000 a year.

“But Labor will not give an $80b tax cut to big businesses, and Labor will not give a $17b tax cut to big banks.

“By not supporting tax cuts for large corporations and by closing loopholes in our tax system, Labor will be able to restore $17b in school funding, restore $2.8b in hospital funding, restore $2.2b to universities, and restore $473m to TAFE. “This will make a difference in regional

communities.

“This is how we can provide opportunities to people living outside the big cities and we will pay down government debt faster.

“Labor will not increase the pension age to 70.

“We will not abolish the energy supplement, as the government plans to do for new pensioners, costing a new pensioner couple $550 a year that they just can’t afford.

“We have been brave enough to reduce capital gains tax discounts, stop tax refunds where no tax has been paid, and crack down on multinational corporate tax avoidance.

“Under this budget, schools on the Central Coast will lose $33m.

“At the moment, on the Central Coast, 750 older Australians are waiting for home care packages, and a third of them are waiting for high-need level 4 packages right now.

“Those are people, like my late father, who lived with young onset dementia.

“They’re not going to be better off under this government’s promise of 14,000 in-home aged care packages over four years.

“How will that go anywhere near to fixing the current waiting list of 105,000 Australians?

“Incredibly, the small amount that these home care packages were increased by has been funded by cuts to residential aged care.

“There is no more funding in this budget for aged-care services; it simply beggars belief.

“Cuts to the Public Service lead to cuts in services to the public.

“A further 1,200 jobs will be axed from the Department of Human Services, even though unanswered calls to Centrelink increased from 29 million to 55 million last year, and wait times blew out.

“This government speaks about infrastructure, but there has been no new infrastructure spend on the Central Coast.

“There has been no increase in spending on health, education, aged care or child care; in fact, funding for all these essential services has been cut.

“On the Central Coast, the youth unemployment rate is currently 18.6 per cent.

“Almost one in five young people in my community are looking for work, yet there is nothing for young people in this budget except a further cut to TAFE and higher education.

“This government has

delivered modest tax cuts for some Australians, but these in no way make up for the job insecurity, record low wages growth and loss of penalty rates that Central Coast workers face under this government.

“Labor will deliver bigger tax cuts to those who need them most.

“My community of Dobell has more older people, more very young people, more people looking for work, more people on low or fixed incomes and more people struggling to make ends meet.

“Our median weekly household income is $1,258.

“We have more than 21,000 small businesses, more than half of which are sole traders.

“We aren’t a rich community, but we work hard and support one another.

“This budget is about high-income earners, big business and the big four banks.

“Labor’s priorities, and those of most middle and working Australians, are the losers in this budget.

“Labor’s priorities are with students, and with older Australians waiting for aged care.”

Liberals claim The Entrance as theirs T

he NSW electorate of The Entrance, currently held by Labor MP, Mr David Mehan, has been labelled as, “belonging to the Liberal Party�, by NSW Premier, Ms Gladys Berejiklian.

In a speech to her party on Saturday, May 26, Ms Beregiklian singled out the electorates of Granville, Strathfield, Prospect, The Entrance and Port Stephens.

According to a report in the Sunday Telegraph, on May 27, Ms Berejiklian said: “They belong to the Liberal Party�.

NSW Labor Leader, Mr Luke Foley, said, however, that the electorates belonged to the people that live there.

Mr Foley said it was the height of arrogance for the Premier to claim that the

Liberal Party owned the communities, “especially as the Berejiklian Liberal Government insists on prioritising Sydney stadiums over schools and hospitals in these, and many other, NSW communities. “Electorates don’t belong to political parties, they belong to the community,� Mr Foley said. “The community entrusts their representation to parliamentarians who have the responsibility and privilege to represent the community,� he said. “The Labor MPs for those seats are all fine community representatives and each of them will increase their majority in March.�

Pro-active solution required for Kanwal sewage overflows R

esidents of Kanwal and Tuggerawong who have reported sewage overflows for many years, need a pro-active solution from Central Coast Council, according to Councillor Kyle MacGregor.

Clr MacGregor said several residents in Pearce Rd, Kanwal, had been expressing their concerns about sewer overflows since before he was elected to Council. “It is a neighbourhoodwide problem, because it starts at the top of the hill and goes down the hill towards the aged care centre,� he said.

According to Clr MacGregor, the main source of the problem appears to be a sewer pump station located near Kanwal Oval, which is half-way along Pearce Rd. “When there have been

Decision on drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility deferred for site inspection C

onsideration of a proposal to build a $3m drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility at 74 Glen Road, Ourimbah, has been deferred for Councillors to conduct a site visit.

The item was on the agenda for debate at the May 28 ordinary Council meeting, but Deputy Mayor, Chris Holstein, moved to have it deferred.

Clr Greg Best spoke against the Deputy Mayor’s request.

“This matter has been before Council since before this Council was elected,” Clr Best said.

He said an extensive staff report and the presence of speakers from the community warranted that the matter be discussed.

Deputy Mayor Holstein said: “I only see about three Councillors from the previous Councils here.

“We are being fair and reasonable and, on this particular issue, I do believe it is important for Councillors to go on site,” Clr Holstein said.

Clr Best and Clr Rebecca Gale Collins were the only two

Councillors to vote against the decision to defer for a site inspection.

A total of 168 submissions were received in relation to the proposal, which would see the 27,210 square metre, E4 environmental living zoned land used for a transitional group home for drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A transitional group home is a permissible use within the E4 zone under the WLEP 2013.

The site contains a dwelling and outbuildings within a cleared area.

The proposed facility would cater for a maximum of 14 participants at a time for six to 12 weeks.

The centre would offer a voluntary program including individual and group sessions and psychological therapy.

The program would be a drug-free, abstinencebased approach to rehabilitation.

Participants would be referred by a GP or specialist after they had undertaken a detoxification (withdrawal) program.

Participants would need to satisfy admission criteria and no person

would be admitted under a Mental Health Order (MHO) or from Magistrates’ Early Referral into Treatment (MERIT) or other courtenforced programs.

Participants could not leave their own vehicle on site.

Admission, discharge and visiting times would be tightly controlled.

There would be at least one nurse present at the facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

All other staff would attend Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, with no more than five staff present at any one time.

Meal preparation, linen and laundry services would largely be off-site, but the development does include a kitchen and laundry.

The surrounding properties contain rural residential developlarge dwelling houses with large rural sheds.

The subject site has an irregular shape and a watercourse (Dog Trap Gully) traversing its centre.

The majority of the site is vegetated with a clearing next to Glen Rd. The cleared area site has a slight (eight per cent) slope that increases to 20 per cent on each side of Dog Trap Gully.

The vegetation along Dog Trap Gully is Coastal Wet Gully Forest that comprises the Lowland Rainforest Endangered Ecological Community (EEC).

Coastal Ranges Mesic Blackbutt Forest and Coastal Ranges Dry Blackbutt Forest have been identified in the northern sections.

The site has been identified as partially flood prone and bushfire prone.

The proposal would include a lower ground

floor eight-space car park, including one disabled space, a gym, staff room, multi-purpose room, laundry and a swimming pool.

The ground floor would consist of two external parking spaces, a main entry, waiting room and reception, massage room, four bedrooms with en-suite and balconies, three offices, kitchen, dining room, and a library-lounge room.

Ten bedrooms with en-suites and balconies would be located on the first floor, along with a staff station, kitchen nook and lounge area.

Security would be provided, including CCTV monitoring and remote private security.

“Claims that the proposal will create a high risk of crime and a dangerous environment are unfounded,” a report to Council said.

“Proposed landscaping will ensure that the property maintains a rural residential character and suitably screen the development from adjoining properties and Glen Rd,.

“A separate application is to be lodged for the installation of a new onsite effluent disposal system.

“A Wastewater Management Plan proposes a raised absorption bed system with a total area of 170 square metres.

“The proposed development has been designed so the balconies of the bedrooms and first floor lounge area include timber louvered privacy screens for a minimum of two thirds of the balcony width.

“To reduce any potential impact of privacy onto 72 Glen Rd, a condition of consent requires that the balconies on the eastern elevation are to

be reduced from a width of 2.95m to 1.64m.

“The design of the proposed development, the proposed setbacks to adjoining development, the existing cut associated with adjoining development, the presence of existing vegetation and proposed landscaping on the common property boundaries, will result in a development that will not negatively impact on adjoining properties or existing streetscape, and will be commensurate with other large rural dwellings in the area.

“From the street, the proposed development will appear as a large rural residential dwelling.

The development proposes deviations from both the maximum building height and setbacks required by Council for the location.

The development proposes a maximum height of 11.3 metres for a portion of the rear of the building, which is a variation of 1.3 metres or 13 per cent.

“However, the majority of the building has a height of 10 metres or less,” the report considered by Councillors said.

“The front portion of the building in particular, sits

more than three metres below the maximum height.

Dwellings on lots with a site area greater than 4,000 square metres, require 20 metre front setbacks, side and rear setbacks of 10 metres, and 40 metre setbacks from a watercourse.

The development proposes front setbacks of between 19 and 28 metres, side setbacks of between six metres and 29 metres.

“It is noted that the shape and orientation of the front boundary adds another dimension to the consideration of setbacks.

“The site, despite its size, has an extremely narrow road frontage, measuring only 12 metres, as opposed to the adjoining properties, which have road frontages of approximately 100 metres and more.

“This fact was actually one of the reasons why the proponent chose the subject site for this proposal, as such a narrow frontage actively facilitates a level of privacy for the residents of the site.”

Water and Sewer Strategic Business Plan endorsed A

Water and Sewer S t r a t e g i c Business Plan has been endorsed by Central Coast Council for submission to the NSW Department of Primary Industries.

Mayor Jane Smith said the strategic plan was an important part of the process to confirm water and sewer prices for 2018-19.

The Water and Sewer Strategic Plan identified three key actions: enhancing the existing water supply system; using water efficiently; and accessing additional sources of water.

Mayor Smith said a Councillor workshop would be undertaken within six months to incorporate improved catchment management and demand management measures. “ C a t c h m e n t management is about protecting our drinking water catchment and demand management is let’s help residents to use less water. “I want to look at those things a bit more closely and a number of councillors raised

other matters in terms of storm water and aging infrastructure,� she said.

Council’s water and sewer network includes 2,270km of water mains, 71 reservoir structures, 50 pumping stations, 2,490km of reticulation pipes and 324 pumping stations.

The Coast’s water assets have a gross replacement value of $1.7b and an average remaining lifespan of 38 years.

Clr Doug Vincent said: “In the previous council, I had people approach me with issues in relation to sewerage and now I see from the plan that we are running an ‘effective and efficient service delivery’. “I am just hoping that whoever has the normal charter of this has a close look at some of the things happening around the place with sewer overflows,� Clr Vincent said. “To be in a first world economy with an agile and efficient service delivery, we really look like we are dropping the ball in certain places,’ he said.

Acting Director of Assets, Infrastructure and Business, Mr Boris Bolgoff, said the Water

and Sewer Strategic Business plan was a highlevel document backed up by others such as asset management plans. “Do you think with sewerage we could just look at houses that get sewerage flowing through them and fix that as a priority?� Clr Vincent said. “Some people have the view that it is time to start looking at things differently.�

Water supply, sewerage and drainage fees and charges for 2018-19 remain at 2017-18 levels for residents across the whole Central Coast.

In the case of a typical residential customer in the former Wyong Council Local Government Area, the total estimated charge for the year will be $1,142.63.

That total is made up of: $164.63 water service charge; $483.28 sewer service charge; $128.32 drainage service charge; and, water usage based on 160kl at $2.29 per kl $366.40.

Mehan not amused

ember for The Entrance, Mr David Mehan, responded to comments made by NSW Premier, Ms Gladys Berejiklian, that The Entrance electorate “belongs to the Liberal Party�. “The Liberal Government’s record on the Central Coast includes: an attempt to privatise Wyong Hospital; fewer police on our streets due to cuts to police and police support staff; selling our poles and wires and sending electricity prices up by 14 per cent in the last 12 months; and, cancelling the installation of lifts at Tuggerah Station,� Mr Mehan said.

He said the Coast’s youth unemployment rate of 18.3 per cent, was also

attributable to the current NSW Government. “The Central Coast swung hard to the Labor Party at the 2015 election following a series of scandals involving Government MPs and a Government Campaign to privatise the State’s poles and wires,� he said.

Mr Mehan has been the Member for The Entrance since 2015 after the former Liberal member stood down following investigations by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. “The Premier thinks she owns The Entrance electorate. “She couldn’t be more out of touch. “The Liberal Government has an appalling record of neglecting the Central Coast.

“The people of the Central Coast won’t soon forget this Government’s record. “After eight long years, the Liberals have done little to improve life for the people on the Central Coast. “The Liberals have the wrong priorities. “They are spending more than $2b on Sydney Stadium when they should be investing in public services on the Central Coast. “A year ago, the Premier didn’t think the Government should own our hospital, now she thinks she owns the people of an electorate. “The only time the Liberal’s care about the Central Coast is when it’s election time.�

Department Council’s airport debate disagrees with showed barely disguised bias implication I regarding Chronicle fishing bans have an extensive interest in aviation (non-flying).

The Central Coast Council appears to be doing all it can to, at best, obstruct the progress of the airport, and at worst, shut it down, despite the report commissioned by the previous Wyong Council in 2016/17, ‘Central Coast Airport Development Review’.

Aged 72 and recently attending my first ever council meeting at the Wyong Chambers on March 26, I was surprised by the conduct of the meeting under the Chairmanship of the Mayor.

Following several other matters, when it came to the debate relating to the airport, the atmosphere became quite aggressive and dismissive of the speakers.

I would say I witnessed barely disguised bias against the motion to allow the airport to continue and expand its training role.

I left the meeting questioning what sort of a democracy we live in.

FORUM where my attendance was purely by chance through a contact who recently got his ‘Wings’ at Warnervale, I have discovered some interesting information which Council appear to be trying to avoid considering.

With Warnervale on the brink, 137 aviation businesses, including some flight training schools, have expressed interest in relocating to The Central Coast Airport, setting up their operations at Warnervale, with a potential financial investment in the area, and to the community, of between $400-$600m dollars.

include apprenticeships, has the potential to create a flow on of between 4,000 and 6,000 jobs in the surrounding region, let alone, inject somewhere in the region of $60-$70m dollars per year into the local economy.

Because of the nature of the aviation world, some of these opportunities would inevitably both create and attract a local skilled labour force.

The apprenticeships would significantly assist local youth in an area of high youth employment and welfare dependency, along with the issues this brings, such as drug use and other anti-social behaviour etc. with the Central Coast leading the country, unfortunately in this area.

Behind all of these statistics, is a very real and current success story out of Warnervale.

I was visiting recently and there was a family near the office counter, an older male and several youngsters.

My eye was caught by a newspaper cutting pinned to the wall, headlined and featuring

a 15-year-old pilot who was in the process of continuing his flying career, having already gone solo.

I chatted to my wife about the young man, overhearing this, the instructor pointed to the young man in the group and said “he’s right there.”

If the definition of success is not what an individual achieves but who they take with them, then behind the young man’s success, and every other student pilot who lives their dream to fly and gains their wings at Warnervale, are the flight training staff, maintenance, and a whole airport infrastructure.

There is already a global shortage of pilots projected to be in the hundreds of thousands within the next decade.

Opportunity begs.

Wouldn’t it be a shame to see it all disappear from Warnervale, all due to the selfish interests of a minority few, to the disadvantage of the region.

would like to correct the record with regard to your article “Fishing bans in place around Budgewoi Creek and Lake”, published in the Wyong Regional Chronicle, edition 139.

The article incorrectly implies fishing bans are in place due to investigations into the presence of PFAS in the area.

There are no fishing bans in place because of PFAS investigations.

There are long standing closures on net fishing in Budgewoi Creek and its tributaries, to limit commercial and recreational fishing in the area, and there is a seasonal night time closure in place for Budgewoi Lake between May and August each

FORUM year, to protect harvesting of juvenile fish species.

Sampling of aquatic biota in the area is currently being undertaken by Snowy Hydro Limited, the operator of the Colongra Power Station, to assess PFAS concentrations.

This will assist the NSW Government in determining if any precautionary dietary advice is needed for high consumers of seafood from the lakes.

Results are not yet available and the community will be informed if any precautions are required.

Senator seeks to correct child care cost claim I

am writing to correct a Labor claim made by Member for Dobell, Ms Emma McBride, that local families using child care will be worse off following the recent Turnbull Government Budget (Wyong Chronicle edition 140).

every issue the Kangy Angy site is not fit for purpose, even with Council endorsing the Warnervale site, we have been unable to persuade Transport to move less than 10km north onto this appropriately zoned and rail safe location.

I use the word persuade cautiously, because with a one sided conversation, persuasion is relative.

The only persuasive tool left for us is our vote.

All is not as good as it seems on the Coast moved my family to the Coast from the hustle and bustle of the big city to retire, after 37 years of being self employed as a Tradie.

I

A sea and tree change combined, which I do not regret, yet I am beginning to think the environmental degradations that I left behind in the city, are not much different to that on the Central Coast.

We moved to Lake Munmorah because of its closeness to the beaches, lakes and bushland, and my desire to be part of a tight knit community.

I became the Hon Chairperson of Camp Breakaway, currently run several local voluntary groups for the disabled, and along with many local residents, built the Lakes Beach access ramp for the disabled.

I was part of the Catherine Hill Bay fight and went to protest meetings against the forces of evil developers, who are still playing games after all their approvals.

I carried out free access for the disabled audits for both former councils and independent local businesses.

I started Lake Munmorah Landcare and I was proud to give back to my regional community.

Our small township had a great bakery, butchers, a video store, chemist and a corner shop, and let’s not forget the heart of any small township, the Newsagent/Post Office.

As a long term proud

activist, I wanted to make sure that all the natural beauty was protected and that the region had a sense of belonging, including our small business operators.

We attended the Brackets and Jam festivals at the local community hall, a grass roots music festival with a community heart.

I began to read in the local paper that big business had caught up with this amazing region and some powers to be were driving what they call progress.

The local corner store owner had decided to fight the approval of a nearby Woolworth’s store, on his own, because he saw the writing was on the wall.

I joined forces with him and addressed the local Progress Association for support, yet quickly found that there were residents within our community with ulterior motives or vested interests.

Another Progress Association across the highway, in a nearby suburb, was also seeing exactly what was written on that wall, the slow demise of many of our local small businesses and a total change to the community in which we call home.

If I didn’t know any better, I think they named a movie after it, “The Castle”, because it’s the vibe.

First to sell up was the local corner store operator, he’d had enough and got that vibe.

Dirty games were emerging with the attempts to poach other small businesses from our local township with the intent to get them to set up in the new complex.

The pressure for our local Newsagent /Post Office had become unbearable and some couple of years later, their licence was taken from them and unfortunately, the Newsagency shut its doors for the last time just recently.

Five proud families’ lives shattered for what some say is progress.

Well further progress is about to impact on our regional communities, whether you like it or not.

All approved by former councils, the current NSW Regional Planning Department, and a conglomeration of historically corrupt local and regional members of Parliament.

Approved without the Central Coast resident’s permission or having any say in it, Gosford is announced as the capital

of the Central Coast.

The Central Coast Regional Plan 2036 also announces that 40,500 new homes will be built over the next two decades, increasing the population by 101,000 people in the northern suburbs alone.

Some 10,500 more homes, then the newly announced Badgerys Creek City for Sydney’s second airport. $180m per annum worth of mineral extractions will commence shortly, yet nobody seems to know exactly where, as we also receive NSW Government approval for another coal mine in our backyard.

Seismic testing for oil/gas exploration has begun off our coastal beaches with the real potential of killing whales, dolphins and other marine species, with oil and gas

rigs plus the potential of massive oil spillages.

None of the authorities, including the EPA, Central Coast Council or local political representatives seem to think much about the equivalent to 455 Olympic swimming pools of toxic Fly Ash being stored in 50-yearold, unlined, dams and currently being covered over and hidden with dirt near Doyalson, or the P.F.A.S. contamination of Lake Munmorah and Colongra Bay, the same substance as Williamtown, near Newcastle.

A four year Cancer Cluster report for the Cancer Council, by Torrens University, has nine cancer clusters identified in the region with cancer patient numbers some 20 per cent above the state

average.

Yet, we are led to believe that all is looking good for the future on the Central Coast, that’s if you’re a housing developer, mining magnate or one of the major food companies, such as the one who did a good job of destroying Lake Munmorah.

Nothing more than icing over a cracked cake, and we the residents have to live with the consequences.

I believe that several unscrupulous companies and faceless bureaucrats with vested interests are quickly changing the entire landscape of our region and we, as a community, sit back and allow this to happen.

ust a note to say how much I enjoyed being part of the 20th GOATS Festival.

Firstly, I found the young citizens polite, civil, and above all, positive and happy.

They were a credit to themselves, both musically and administratively as the MC’s on various stages.

It is impossible to over emphasise how

It gives the young people a sense of purpose.

I also found the quality of music extremely high, not only from the young musicians who performed with poise and confidence, but especially from established musicians

such as The Choir Boys and The Pits, and most especially, from the lilting, evocative, Celtic singer, Ella Roberts, so beautifully accompanied by her brother, Nick Roberts.

I found the atmosphere soft and gentle, even healing, and the main contributing factor was, of course, it was drug and alcohol free.

Act of indecency leads to multiple charges

T

wo men have been charged and weapons seized from a home in Watanobbi, following an investigation into an alleged act of indecency on a train.

At about 11:30am on December 4, 2017, a 17-year-old girl boarded a train at Central Railway Station, bound for Newcastle.

A short time later, police will allege, a man sat across from her and committed an act of indecency, before leaving the train at Wyong Railway Station.

Once the girl left the train at Cardiff Railway Station, she alerted police, and officers from North Central Sector of the Police Transport

Command commenced an investigation.

While conducting a search of a Watanobbi home, a 41-year-old man was arrested, after police seized several items, including a firearm, ammunition, knives, a laser pointer, a conductive electrical device, and prohibited drugs.

A 53-year-old man was charged with commit an act of indecency with person 16 years or over.

The 41-year-old man was charged with 18 offences, including: drive motor vehicle during disqualification period; supply prohibited drug greater than indictable quantity (not cannabis);

possess prohibited drug (x5); deal with property proceeds of crime; goods suspected stolen in/on premises (x3); possess unregistered firearm; possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit (x3); possess ammunition without holding licence; owner/occupier knowingly allow use as drug premises; organises/conducts/ assists drug premises.

He was refused bail and appeared at Wyong Local Court on May 19, where he was granted conditional bail to appear before the same court on August 7.

Inquiries continue.

Loose spade hits motorcyclist

T

uggerah Lakes Police District are appealing for information about a motor vehicle collision on the Pacific Hwy, which occurred about 11:55pm on Thursday, April 13.

A vehicle, described as a Dual Cab Tradies Ute, and a Motorcycle, were both travelling south bound on the Pacific

Hwy, Frazer Park.

As the ute has overtaken the motorcycle, it is believed a spade has dislodged from the tray of the ute hitting the motorcyclist.

The rider of the motorbike was located on the side of the road by passers-by a short time later and they called Emergency Services.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment and released later the next day.

Anyone with information that may help identify the Dual Cab Ute is asked to contact Wyong Police Station or Crime Stoppers.

Driver of stolen vehicle arrested after police pursuit

A

man appeared in court following a police pursuit along the M1 motorway.

On Friday, May 25, police alleged a 38-yearold man stole a Toyota utility from Warabrook.

A short time later, the vehicle was involved in a crash with another vehicle on Cessnock Rd. The Toyota allegedly failed-to-stop and continued on the M1.

About 1:00pm the same day, officers from Tuggerah Lakes Traffic and Highway Patrol Command sighted the vehicle on the M1 Pacific Motorway near Bar Point.

A pursuit was initiated and continued, before police deployed road spikes as the vehicle approached Mooney Mooney.

It came to a stop near the Hawkesbury River Bridge.

he 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast have concluded, and young athletes from across the region have left their mark on Australian sporting history.

By far and away the Coast’s most successful athlete was Mingara Aquatic swimmer, Brad Woodward.

The 20-year-old rising star will return home with three medals.

Woodward is the Coast’s golden boy, quite literally, having won a gold medal in his final event at the Games, the Men’s 4 x 100 Medley Relay on April 11.

The impressive result comes off the back of two silver medals for the 100m and 200m Backstroke earlier in the Games.

Further to the medals, Woodward swam some incredible Personal Bests, including a 1:56.57 in the 200m Backstroke, an amazing result for a swimmer who only broke 2:00.00 in January.

Hockey star and 2008/09 CCAS Male Athlete of the Year, Matt Dawson, didn’t let a significant eye injury hold him back, with the Australian Men’s Hockey team, The Kookaburras, blitzing through the Men’s competition to claim the gold in the final against New Zealand.

The Kookaburras were the number one ranked team in the world going into the Games, and with this gold, have reached a milestone of six consecutive Commonwealth Games’ titles.

Track cyclist, Nicholas Yallouris, finished 10th in the 1,000m Individual Time Trial.

It was heartbreak for the former Kincumber High School student and 2016 Olympic gold medallist, Ellia Green, when the Women’s Rugby 7’s team lost in the final against New Zealand.

Despite walking away with the silver medal, the Women’s team will be forever haunted by the now infamous ‘brain

The 2018-19 Draft Delivery Program, Operational Plan including the budget and draft Resourcing Strategy are among a suite of documents Council has placed on exhibition for public comment after being endorsed at the May 14 Council meeting.

Council aims to achieve a tiny surplus of $64,000 but an average ratepayer from the old Wyong LGA will see their rates go up by $33.50 for the year.

Mayor Jane Smith said it was now the community’s opportunity to write to Council to let them know where they’ve got it right and wrong before the plan was adopted and rates officially set on June 25.

Mayor Smith said the draft plan was the beginning of an evolving culture within Council that was more responsive to, and better reflected, community priorities and aspirations in line with the CSP. “This is our contract with the community,” Mayor Smith said.

Open space and recreation has been allocated $45.13 million or 5.9 per cent, leisure and lifestyle $16.81 million or 2.2 per cent, and waterways and coastal protection $20.01 million or 2.6 per cent.

have been given a total budget of $18.2 million or 2.4 per cent of total spend; learning and education $9.46 million or 1.2 per cent; and libraries $11.36 million or 1.5 per cent.

A rate path freeze for merged councils still applies for Central Coast Council.

This means Council is required to maintain the rate path that was last applied by the former Gosford and Wyong Councils until June 30, 2020.

The freeze in the rate path is not a freeze on the amount Council can levy by way of rates.

The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has approved an annual rate peg increase so Council’s permissible rates income for 2018-19 is the sum of the rates income for each of the former local government areas, as if the amalgamation had

not occurred, plus the allowable rate peg.

For 2018-19 IPART approved a rate peg of 2.3 per cent.

The rates and annual charges applicable to a residence in the former Wyong LGA with an average unimproved land value will increase $33.50 or 1.4 per cent in 2018-19 which is made up of a $22.55 increase in ordinary rates and an $11 increase in domestic waste charges.

Maps showing the parts of the Local Government Area to which each category and subcategory of ordinary and special rates proposed will be available at the Council’s Wyong office (and Gosford office).

Final adoption of the plan and making of rates and charges will take place at the June 25 Council meeting.

Council has encouraged the community to make submissions on the draft plans via yourvoiceourcoast.com, Council libraries and offices at Wyong and Gosford.

Submissions will be received up until 5:00pm on Thursday, June 14.

The money was raised at the Club’s charity day in 2017, and the Hospital is very grateful for the support.

Free forum to be held entral Coast Local Health District and the Heart Foundation are to host the ‘Let’s Talk: Women and Heart Disease’ forum, a free event to be held at Mingara Recreation Club, Tumbi Umbi, on Tuesday, June 5.

With heart disease one of the biggest killers of women in Australia, the forum represents an opportunity for local women to discuss all things relating to ladies and their heart health.

“The forum is a great opportunity for local women of all ages to hear more about this often forgotten about aspect of women’s health, with expert panel discussions around prevention, diagnosis and management,” said the District’s Clinical Nurse Coordinator of Cardiac Services, Ms Jackie Colgan.

Ms Colgan said the full-day event would

help continue to raise awareness in the local community that heart disease doesn’t discriminate between genders.

“Many people think that heart disease is a male disease, but the fact is, it doesn’t discriminate; it affects both genders.

“Heart disease continues to kill more women than breast cancer and diabetes.

“We are thrilled to be working with the Heart Foundation and helping promote its ‘Making the Invisible Visible’ campaign, so let’s make the invisible visible and help protect the hearts of the women we love,” she said.

The forum will be held from 10am to 4pm, and has been made possible thanks to a grant from the Heart Foundation’s Women and Heart Disease NSW Community Grants program.

The celebration marked the conclusion of intensive training for the life-changing Guide Dogs, that will soon be matched with a person who is blind or vision impaired.

The five Guide Dogs graduating included four black dogs and one yellow dog.

he Australian Meat Industry Council’s NSW/ACT Sausage King and Best Butchers Burger Competitions continue on May 31 at Ourimbah TAFE Campus.

Independent local butchers from NSW regions send their sausage and burger creations to be judged by a panel of experienced judges made up of consumers and trade experts.

The judges will be scrutinising the uncooked and cooked appearance of the sausages and burgers, and taste testing them for their flavour and texture.

Six categories of sausages will be up for judging; Traditional Australian Beef; Traditional Australian Pork; Poultry; Australian Lamb/Open Class; Continental, and Gourmet/Open Class, as well as two categories of burger; Best Beef Burger and Best Gourmet

Burger.

Each year brings new creative recipes from the masters who enter these esteemed events.

Presentation and professionalism are always first rate from entrants who seize this opportunity to publicise sausages and burgers as tasty and healthy main meals.

The first place winners in each category in the region will proceed to the State Final being held in September.

The NSW sausage and burger kings will be announced at the NSW Annual Members Dinner in October.

The state winners will then proceed to the National Sausage King Finals to be held in Perth, in February, 2019, where they will compete against other state winners for Australia’s ultimate title of Sausage King and Burger King.

“Our Scope of Works has been approved, and a pre-tender visit was organised last week for our canteen upgrade at a school funded cost of $125,000,” said Principal, Ms Kerry Moore.

“The upgrade is required to allow more food preparation in line with the Healthy Canteen Strategy being implemented.

“We have started shopping around for an oven, dishwasher and chest freezer, as more food preparation will be required in the canteen.

“We are also investing in a commercial Turbo oven, which cooks food more quickly.

“The canteen will be closed on the last day of Term 2, as everything will need to be relocated, as demolition will be done as soon as the holidays commence.

“The canteen will operate on a reduced menu out of the hall for the first few weeks of Term 3.

“The new canteen will be fantastic with stainless steel preparation areas, new flooring, painting, cabinetry, Crimsafe instead of the bars on the windows and more.

“It is going to be fantastic when complete,” Ms Moore said.

t Peter’s Catholic College students have emerged victorious in the Broken Bay Diocese annual cooking competition, Battle of the Chefs.

The competition, which is held in good fun each year to celebrate the culinary talents of Broken Bay Diocese VET Hospitality students, is always hotly contested,

and was hosted by St Peters on May 18.

St Peters had to battle it out against local rival Colleges, Mary Mackillop and St Brigid’s, as well as a range of outer Sydney schools.

St Peter’s students Emma, Therese and Grace were just too good on the day and brought home the Chef Shield.

Game changers sought T

he NSW Department of Education’s 2018 Education Week will take place from August 6 to 10 in Term 3, but the Department has put the call out early to all NSW public schools for Education Week’s newest initiative, Are You a Game Changer.

“This Education Week, the Department of Education is launching an exciting initiative called, The Game Changer Challenge,” said the Department’s, Mr Sven Wright.

Sixteen teams from schools across NSW will explore the role of designthinking in the classroom, all while solving the important question, what will the school of the

future look like?

“We live in a rapidly changing world, an era of accelerated innovation and increasing uncertainty.

“This world requires students who are deep thinkers, critical, reflective, empathetic and creative to solve the big challenges of today and adapt to an unknown future,” Mr Wright said.

“Flourishing in this complex world begins with a great education, and to co-design that, we need your help.

“The Sixteen teams from schools across NSW will be flown to Game Changer HQ in Sydney during Education Week to compete in a threeday, design-thinking program where, working alongside leading industry professionals, teams will go head-tohead to craft the school

of the future.

“What will the school of the future look like?

“What subjects will you study?

“Will you go on excursions to the moon?

“Will each student have a robot to help with their homework?

“Will homework even exist?” Mr Wright said.

TAFE campuses to have seven new teachers T

he NSW Liberal N a t i o n a l Government has announced the establishment of a TAFE Teacher R e c r u i t m e n t Taskforce, which will deliver five new teachers at the Wyong Campus, and two new teachers at the Ourimbah Campus.

Minister responsible for TAFE NSW, Mr Adam Marshall, said: “TAFE NSW is experiencing strong enrolment demand for Government-funded trade apprenticeships, with data revealing a 19 per cent increase

in enrolments for electricians and an 11 per cent increase for carpenters and plumbers, compared to this time last year,” Mr Marshall said.

“The NSW Government’s reforms to NSW TAFE are all about funnelling resources into frontline teaching while reducing back office duplication,” he added.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast, Mr Scot MacDonald, said the new frontline teaching staff showed that the NSW Government was backing TAFE on the Central Coast.

“These new teachers are a huge win for the

Central Coast, and will deliver education and training support to our local students to help them upskill or get a new job,” Mr MacDonald said.

“TAFE is modernising and responding to new technologies and the transforming economy of the Central Coast, under the leadership of the Berejiklian government.

“This investment in TAFE teachers will open new opportunities for students and improve access to the world class teaching and skills training that TAFE is renowned for,” he added.

Indigenous Art Showcase kicks off National Reconciliation Week celebrations

a t i o n a l Reconciliation Week celebrations kicked off in Wyong with the official opening of the Maliga Indigenous Art Showcase at The Art House at 10:00am on Friday, May 26.

Maliga, which means Shine, in Darkinjung, is a school-based art showcase, promoting local Indigenous students’ multimedia art and craft that reflects their identity and cultural connection to the Central Coast.

The project commenced in 2014 and has created a platform for young Indigenous people to share their own stories of cultural identity.

It presents a multidisciplinary narrative of identity and connection to place in the visual, literary and performance

arts.

Maliga has engaged with local schools, youth services, cultural leaders and elders, and is open to all members of the community to acknowledge and celebrate their stories.

St Brigid’s Catholic College student, Claudia McCartney, received the Mayoral Award from, Councillor Chris Holstein, on behalf of, Central Coast Mayor, Jane Smith, for her work, Meeting at the Blood Tree.

Kindergarten and Year 1 students from Toukley Public School received Highly Commended Award Primary School for their works, Connection and Our ABC’s and Numbers.

Gorokan Public School students, Jai Witton, Isacc Mount and Shaylee Baxter, received an Elders’ Choice Award for their work, Our Land.

Kulnura Public School student, Blayde Johnson, also received an Elders’ Choice for his work, Family are Helpful.

Wadalba Community School received a Highly Commended Award Secondary School and an Elders’ Choice Award for their work, Our Stories.

Northlakes High School student, Kyle Waters, also received a Highly Commended Secondary School and an Elders’ Choice Award for his work, Spirit Turtle.

With works having commenced on May 21, the project includes the demolition of the current awnings and barbeques, replacing them with modern awning structures, barbeques and accessible dining settings.

Additional awnings and seating is also included within the refurbishment.

Central Coast Council Director, Connected Communities, Julie Vaughan, said that the upgrades to the park will provide the community and visitors with a new and more inclusive barbeque area.

“This area is often frequented by community groups, local residents and visitors to our region, so by adding in additional seating and an extra barbeque we are allowing

for a higher utilisation of the area.

“Additionally, improving and expanding our parks and recreation spaces is another way Council can boost regional and economic development, encouraging low impact tourism.”

Mayor Jane Smith said that the upgrades to this recreational area incorporated accessibility at the concept design stage.

“Council is committed to improving access and inclusion of people with disabilities in the broader community through our Disability Inclusion Action Plan, which we launched last year.

“The Central Coast is home to a diverse and growing community, and it is a key Council responsibility to ensure we provide a truly accessible, inclusive and liveable community for all our residents.”

The total budget for the upgrade to this barbecue area is $125,000, which is in Council’s 2017-18 Operational Plan.

‘Reconnected’ roundtable held

Pedestrian refuge being constructed

C

onstruction has started on a new pedestrian refuge on Oakland Ave, just north of Ashton Ave, at The Entrance.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast, Mr Scot MacDonald, said the NSW Liberal National Government has provided $150,000 for work which will improve pedestrian safety and connections to the local shopping precinct for the community.

“It was encouraging to hear the positive feedback from the community about this proposed improvement

work during consultation in March,” Mr MacDonald said.

“The project work will follow the proposed design shown back in March, which will involve installing concrete footpaths, islands and pram ramps on both sides of the street, to improve access to the new pedestrian refuge,” he said.

“Not only will it improve access, the new refuge will also improve safety for pedestrians by allowing them to cross one direction of traffic at a time,” said Central Coast Councillor, Jilly Pilon.

Garden Competition is on again entral Coast Council has once again allocated funding for the 2018 Wyong District Garden Competition.

“This will be the committee’s 45th Garden Competition in what was the old Wyong Shire,” said Committee President, Mr Errol Grace.

“Schedules for the Garden Competition and the associated Horticultural Competition will soon be available at all local libraries and various nurseries throughout the area.”

Entries are open to all gardeners who reside in the old Shire boundaries.

Entries for the Garden Competition will close on Wednesday, September

12, with preliminary and final judging the following week.

The competition will culminate with a presentation afternoon at the old Wyong Council Chambers, on Wednesday, October 3, with winning gardens opening to the public on Sunday, October 7.

In conjunction with the presentation afternoon, a horticultural competition will be held for keen gardeners to present their best vegetables, pot plants and flowers for judging.

There will also be an organised bus trip on the open garden day for those that do not wish to drive themselves.

entral Coast Council is c e l e b r a t i n g Indigenous Arts and Culture with a series of community events across the Coast to kick off National Reconciliation Week.

The map, omitting The Entrance, was updated by Tourism Central Coast

ourism Central Coast, the new organisation charged with promoting tourism in the Local Government Area, initially left The Entrance, one of the region’s most iconic tourist destinations, off the map on its new website.

The new-look visitcentralcoast.com.au was relaunched during May, but Member for The Entrance, Mr David Mehan, said he had to ask Tourism Central Coast to, literally, put The Entrance on the map.

“The Entrance has always been a popular holiday destination for the Central Coast and has continued to grow with new tourist accommodation, development of residential areas and growing recreational facilities,” Mr Mehan said.

“The Entrance is well known for its beaches, town centre, the lake, Majestic Cinemas and the pelican feeding platform but, sadly, these local icons have been forgotten,” he said.

“I know The Entrance is used to being left off the map but I didn’t think

Central Coast Council’s new Tourism Operator would take it so literally.

“As usual, anything North of Terrigal is forgotten.

“This is just completely outrageous.

“I ask that this map be updated to reflect the true Central Coast and to ensure that The Entrance is put on the map.”

Shortly after Mr Mehan’s statement on May 17, the map was updated to include The Entrance.

Grow’, National Reconciliation Week runs from May 27 to June 3, and provides an opportunity to reflect on the reconciliation journey and our national story, by learning more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.

Council Unit Manager Community Partnerships, Mr Glenn Cannard, said Council will celebrate this important week with a series of events including the launch of the annual, Sean Lonergan, Schools Project and Maliga. “ N a t i o n a l Reconciliation Week is an important time for the community to gather, celebrate Indigenous arts and culture and learn about our region’s shared histories, cultures, and achievements,” Mr Cannard said.

The artistic skills of the region’s school students will be highlighted in exhibitions at the Gosford Regional Gallery and The Art House, both of which explore the diversity of Indigenous art, including contemporary pieces based on connection to place and cultural identity.

“Council supported a free, community-run Cultural Market Day on May 27,” Mr Cannard said.

“The day featured Aboriginal art and craft stalls, entertainment, aboriginal performances, a barbecue, free children’s craft and an interactive Wildlife Arc Society animal display,” he said.

On May 28, Maliga (‘shine’ in Darkinjung) Indigenous Art Showcase launched at The Art House, Wyong, which this year included a new category for children aged 3-5 that the students at Kooloora Preschool were invited to enter.

The Maliga launch included an awards p r e s e n t a t i o n , entertainment and morning tea, with presentations by guest

speakers.

Council Mayor, Ms Jane Smith, said Reconciliation Week is an important time to share knowledge and reflect on the contribution of Indigenous arts and culture to the Coast.

“Indigenous art incorporates more than just the well-known dot paintings,” Mayor Smith said.

“Film, photography, sculpture, collage and dance are other forms of contemporary Indigenous art that is less familiar to the general community but still integral to the Indigenous culture.

“Both these local exhibitions showcased our region’s rich heritage while providing a platform for Indigenous and nonIndigenous children and young people to creatively express their own stories connected to country and identity, creating a sense of pride in their cultural identity and challenging preconceived ideas about contemporary Indigenous Art,” she said.

unter Local Land Services and Lake Macquarie City Council will host, Wyee Weeds, a free event to help locals identify and control backyard weeds, on May 31, from 9am, at Wyee Hall.

“Weeds have a huge impact on our local environments, waterways and farms,” said Hunter Local Land Services’, Ms Penny Evans.

“Weeds can be spread by people, vehicles and even animals.

“We need your help to stop weed spread.

“Hunter Local Land Services is working with local councils to bridge the city-country divide by engaging with the region’s semi-rural communities to help them meet their responsibilities to tackle weeds and pest animal control,” she said.

Peri-Urban Officer, Ms Carolyn Jenkinson, is encouraging former Wyong Shire and Lake Macquarie residents to come along to the free workshop.

“Residents can bring along weeds from their

Ourimbah cements position at the top R

ound 7 of the Central Coast Rugby Union Competition kicked off on May 26 and saw wins to Ourimbah and The Entrance.

In the Match of the Day, Ourimbah hung on to defeat Terrigal by 14 points to 8, at Ourimbah Rugby Park.

It was an intense, hard fought battle throughout.

There was nothing in the scores for the entire 80 minutes.

Ourimbah did hold the lead for the entire match, but they were never able to get away from Terrigal.

They led throughout, but knew Terrigal was just behind them on the scoreboard and always a threat.

Ourimbah scored the only try in the first half, and with Terrigal only responding with a single penalty goal, it was Ourimbah who led at the halftime break by 7 points to 3.

This try by Jack Stonestreet was a deserved one.

Best player for Ourimbah during this period was

flanker, Jarrod Grange.

He had a great match and was everywhere in attack and defence.

He also posted nine personal points in the match.

Others to play well for the home side were prop, Will Fraser, and No.8, Elekana Laupola.

Terrigal tried everything they could in the second half to bridge the gap.

They played some very concerted rugby and threw all they had at Ourimbah.

The home side scored their second converted try early in the second half and had jumped to a handy 14 points to 3 lead.

Things were looking good for them.

However, Terrigal quickly responded with their own try and reduced the lead to 14 points to 8.

It was in the final 15 minutes that Terrigal attacked incessantly, but were unable to break through some very determined defence.

It was a wholehearted display by both teams.

The win cements Ourimbah’s position at the top of the competition

ladder, while the loss by Terrigal sees them drop to third spot on the ladder in what is developing into a most interesting competition.

The Entrance had a pleasing win over Gosford, at Joseph Banks Oval, in the President’s Cup, by 12 points to 7.

It was very tight throughout, but it was the home side that was in front at the full time whistle.

The Lakes and Warnervale did not fare as well as their northern neighbours, both suffering defeats this round.

Kariong finally got their first win of the season when they kicked a very late penalty goal to defeat The Lakes by 34 points to 31 at Kariong Oval.

It was an exciting match from start to finish.

The points scoring was never ending and there were some fine tries scored during the match.

The scores see-sawed throughout the match, with one team in front, then the other.

It was a great spectacle for the spectators on hand.

Avoca Beach proved too strong for Warnervale, at Heazlett Park, and ran out winners by 31 points to 19.

Avoca Beach always seemed to be in charge on the scoreboard, but Warnervale were always a threat.

The home side had the better of the first half and led at the halftime break by 23 points to 14.

It was a handy lead and one that was deserved.

Avoca Beach played pleasing rugby and were able to cross for four tries in that first 40 minutes.

Both teams were only able to cross for the single try each, and the Warnervale team were simply unable to bridge the gap on the scoreboard.

The win by Avoca Beach sees them leapfrog Terrigal into second position on the ladder.

Warnervale were never that far behind and will take a lot from the match.

Their best players were halfback, Brenton Acreman, flanker, Cameron McNamara, and five-eight, Joey Walton.

Warnervale stay in the Top Four despite the loss and have a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks.

Kariong went to the halftime break leading by 24 points to 19, and this was after The Lakes led by 19 points to 10 midway through that first half.

So Kariong certainly had a great end to the first half.

Central Coast Newspapers’ advertising rates are relatively much lower than in other newspapers and at the same time much larger than in other newspapers, with the minimum size being 50mm X 42mm. Approximately 16,000 copies of each newspaper are printed and distributed every fortnight.

Non Business and Not For Profit Organisations As Central Coast Newspapers are community newspapers, the cost of advertising not for profit organisations’ events is subsidised. This makes them the same rate as non business advertisements.

A mono 5cm advertisement only costs $33. Each additional cm costs $6.60 as does colour, and/or a photograph or a logo. Private advertisements need to be paid for at the time of booking.

Business rates The minimum size of 5cm X a single column only costs $40 + GST in mono and an extra $8 + GST for colour, a logo or a photograph, every two weeks. Most businesses choose to advertise on an ongoing basis and discounts apply for multiple bookings, if they are paid for in full, in advance.

Having an advertisement run for 3 months only costs $215 + GST, for 6 months it is $385 + GST, and for 12 months advertising, the total cost is only $700 + GST – Approximately $14 per week.

Big win for Killarney Vale in AFL R

ound 7 of the Hunter Haval Black Diamond AFL saw Killarney Vale topple Lake Macquarie.

Killarney Vale recorded a much needed victory, proving too strong for Lake Macquarie, at Adelaide Oval, winning 28.16.184 to 5.3.33.

The victory was a much needed tonic for the Bombers after their loss to arch rivals, Wyong Lakes, in Round 6.

Bryce Singleton continued his impressive return to the Bombers’ colours, kicking 10 goals and capitalising on the excellent work

through the midfield of, Josh Mifsud and Tim Oosterhoff.

Other to impress for the Bombers were, Sam Jabour, Liam Banfield and Lachlan Wilson.

Round 7 was not as kind to Wyong Lakes as Round 6 was, with the Lakes unable to back up their good win over Killarney Vale, going down to Singleton, on the road, 11.9.75 to 5.6.36.

Tyler Wood, Nathan Doyle, Brendan Charlton, and Tim Hillman were the best players for Wyong Lakes.

Papadatos wins the 56th Open de Portugal golf title D

i m i t r i o s Papadatos, a former Mackillop Catholic College student, has secured his maiden European Challenge Tour golf title at the 56th Open de Portugal.

Papadatos secured the title by carding a three under par in the final round of the competition.

The 26-year-old, and three-time winner on the PGA Tour of Australasia, locked in a 25-foot birdie putt at the 10th to extend his advantage over the pack.

Papadatos took the windy conditions in his stride, setting the clubhouse target at seven under par.

With home favourite, Lima, unable to birdie at

the 18th, Papadatos was crowned champion, and he was delighted to have claimed his first victory in Europe.

Following the win, Papadatos fronted the media.

He spoke about the conditions, the play during the Open de Portugal and his next move.

“It feels pretty good

and a big relief, especially after the last couple of days,” Papadatos said.

“It’s been very windy and difficult, you had to grind out results in such a bunched field when it’s very hard to break away and get in front, but I was fortunate enough to do that in the end.

“I played the course well today.

“I was very solid finishing long par putts, and I didn’t threaten to make many birdies, as I was hitting it poorly today, but I hung in there and my short game was good and I took a couple of opportunities when I got them.

Papadatos has been a consistent talent on the Australasian golf circuit but has struggled to break into the European scene.

He hopes this victory will help change that.

“I’ve had a couple of wins back in Aus and I’ve never won in Europe, so it’s maybe not the biggest, but it’s definitely the most important, as it’s going to get me going over here.

“I’ve been trying for the last two or three years to get myself going in Europe and onto the main tour, so this is a big step forward and it’s going to help me out a lot,” Papadatos said.

The win moves Papadatos up to 9th place on the Road to Ras Al Khaimah Rankings, with 32,000 points.

he Mariners have added some much needed firepower to the front third with the signing of 25-year-old attacker, Corey Gameiro, who arrives on the Central Coast from Brisbane Roar.

Gameiro put pen-topaper on a one-yearcontract with the Central Coast Mariners on May 8, and has plied his trade with the likes of Sydney FC and Melbourne City.

Before making a name for himself in the Hyundai

A-League, Gameiro left Australian shores as a teenager to sign with Fulham FC, before a loan deal saw him don the blue and white of FC Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

Upon signing his contract, Gameiro spoke of his excitement to take part in his first pre-season for some time.

It’s clear that motivation will not be an issue for the incoming marksman.

“To get through last season and feel good to finish hard sessions and games and feel strong is something that I am really looking forward to building on,” Gameiro said.

“I haven’t started a preseason in four years, so to start a pre-season and get some minutes into the legs is something I am really looking forward to.

“The opportunity to come to the Central Coast Mariners and rebuild, is something that excites me.

“As an individual, I’ve been through adversity and I think the club has gone through that as well in recent years.

“It’s time for the club to come out of that and it’s something I really want to be a part of,” he said.

“I’m itching for preseason; I can’t wait to get started.

“I know a handful of the boys from when I was captain of the Australian under 23’s, they know what sort of person I am and how hungry I am

to succeed, so I will be there from day one of pre-season to drive that as much as I can.

“Getting the right people here at the Mariners is so important because they are the people you are going to go to war with, go to battle with.

“You need people next to you, that you’re going to look across at and know that he wants it just as much as I do,” Gameiro said.

Mariners’ Head Coach, Mr Mike Mulvey, credited Gameiro’s attitude, and has no doubt that he will add a new element to the Mariners’ attack this season.

“Corey is exactly the type of personality we need at the Mariners,” Mulvey said.

“He is hardworking, motivated and a player that will take this opportunity with both hands.

“We are working hard to add more attacking weapons to our front third this season, and Corey is the first, of several new players, that we will bring in to the strengthen that area of our game,” Mulvey said.

The former U20 and U23 Australian International will link up with his new teammates in June on the Central Coast when the squad report for the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 pre-season.

Wyong Roos Win T he Wyong Roos overturned a 14-point deficit to cap a magical afternoon at Henson Park, running out 2624 victors in their clash with the Newtown Jets.

Playing out the third of three matches at the ground, in the Intrust Super Premiership Magic Round, a much-improved Wyong rallied to score three tries in the last 20 minutes.

Going down in the Round 1, 23-22 showdown at Morry Breen Oval, Newtown opened the scoring in the fourth minute of play, when centre, Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga, powered his way over the line from close range.

Presented with a difficult conversion attempt from wide-out, half, Kyle Flanagan, slotted the ensuing shot on goal with ease.

Electric fullback, Will Kennedy, extended the side’s lead beyond double digits just three minutes later under the posts.

Flanagan turned four points into six, as the Jets raced out by 12.

Wyong bounced back with two quick tries of their own.

Dean Matterson (11) and Josh Mantellato (18), found their way in for successive tries.

Newtown began the second half as they started the first, going in for an early try to extend their lead beyond six points.

Playing his fourth match back from a badly broken jaw, Sione Katoa carved the Wyong Roos’ to pieces when he scored the Jets’ third try.

Addison Demetriou assumed the kicking duties and made no mistake in seeing the home side to an 18-10 scoreline.

Demetriou soon broke his way through the Wyong defence to grab a try of his own.

The Roos flicked the switch and hit back where it mattered most. led his way through to score under the uprights, and, Mantellato, made no mistake from in front.

At 24-16 down, Wyong had all the momentum, and found their second when Paul Momirovski slipped through AufagaToomage to score.

Mantellato again saw the touch judges’ flags raised and the Roos were back within two points.

Without their dominant play-maker, Flanagan, Newtown’s attack posed little threat.

Completing the remarkable win, Wyong’s, Billy Smith, finished a backline shift to go in untouched, taking the visitors to a 26-24 front.

Mantellato was unable to convert but it mattered little.

The Roos defended their line and defused a last-ditch Jets raid, to record their third win of the Intrust Super Premiership.

Parliament hears of Mariners’ push to join W-League F

ederal Member for Dobell, Ms Emma McBride, vocalised her support for the Central Coast Mariners’ push to field a womens’ team in the W-League this season, in an impassioned speech in Parliament.

“This week I wrote to Football Federation Australia in support of the Central Coast Mariners’ goal to field a W-League team in the 2018-19 competition,” Ms McBride said.

“The Central Coast is home to some of the best footballers in the country, and I strongly support a pathway for young women to realise their talent and to compete on the national stage.

“The Mariners have been working hard over the past three years to make sure they are ready to field a team and provide the best facilities, training and development possible on the Coast.

“After playing in the first two seasons of the W-League, and signing Matildas such as, Michelle Heyman, Ellyse Perry and Caitlin Foord, it was very disappointing that the Mariners could no longer field a team,”

she continued.

“Since then, they have built up the women’s academy, allowing 150 girls to progress from under-11s through to the National Premier League.

“These athletes deserve a pathway to the national stage, and the Mariners are ready to make this happen.

“Central Coast Council has upgraded Central Coast Stadium with extra change rooms, so the ground can showcase the very best of women’s football in a doubleheader with the men’s A-League matches.

“As patron of the Central Coast Heart Premier League Netball, I know the value of local pathways to elite sporting opportunities for women athletes in our community.

“I urge the Football Federation to back the Mariners in opening up elite football to women on the Central Coast in an expanded 10-team competition.

“Congratulations to Mariners’ CEO, Mr Shaun Mielekamp, for your leadership.

“Our community is behind you,” Ms McBride concluded.
