Planning panel says no to Maccas In a major win for the community, the Central Coast Local Planning Panel has rejected the proposal for a MacDonald’s restaurant at Toukley.

Hundreds gathered at a community protest in November

Community members have campaigned against the proposal for more than a year, saying it would be in the wrong spot.

The panel, which met on Friday, December 12, agreed.

The panel gave seven reasons for refusing the application, which had

been given a recommendation for approval by Central Coast Council staff who had assessed the proposal.

The panel said the proposed use was contrary to the character of the eastern area of Toukley, especially in its proximity to Toukley Public School, and the residential area to the north.

It said the proposal was an overdevelopment of the site, and the impact on pedestrian safety had not been adequately demonstrated.

Love, grief and the message of goodwill The Central Coast and the nation enter the festive season this year carrying a weight no-one should bear.

The murders in Bondi, less than two weeks out from Christmas and at the beginning of this year’s Hanukkah celebrations, have shaken the nation, not only for their brutality but for what they represent; a planned attack on families during a season built around togetherness and care.

This was a deliberate attack on families gathered for a public Hanukkah celebration, meant to honour light, resilience and joy.

These were not random acts.

They were calculated, driven by some warped ideology that assigns collective blame to innocent Australians practising their faith and going about their lives.

EDITORIAL Families sit at the heart of this festive season.

For many, that truth now carries grief instead of joy.

Parents, children, partners and friends are facing an empty chair at the table, their lives changed by hate.

Yet as the nation has confronted darkness, the Central Coast has shown something hopeful.

Local messages of solidarity with the Jewish community have flourished on social media.

Just as our community’s response to recent bushfires, drownings and emergencies has been immediate and instinctive.

Just over a week ago, neighbours opened their homes, volunteers turned up unasked, and first responders

worked with quiet professionalism.

There was no chaos; there was co-ordination.

There was no hatred; there was humanity.

Now we open our hearts.

These moments matter because they show who we really are.

When crisis strikes, Australians do not fracture; they gather, and the Central Coast exemplifies this culture.

Australia’s leaders have rightly condemned the Bondi attack, but words must be matched with resolve.

For too long, hesitation to confront hatred in all its forms has been shaped by fear of political backlash.

That timidity has a cost.

Hate grows when it is excused, minimised or treated as too inconvenient to challenge.

There can be no selective outrage.

Hate is hate, whether it wears the language of ideology, grievance or politics.

It must be confronted wherever it appears.

The message of hope and light is not naïve.

It is resilient.

It lives in the efforts of firefighters returning to the line, surf lifesavers entering rough seas, and now, neighbours checking on one another.

We honour the victims of Bondi not only with grief but with resolve; to reject collective blame, to protect our communities and to stand together even when it is uncomfortable.

In the face of darkness, love and light must rise again.

It always has.

Herbs instructed to grow for official opening Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme – and so many more herbs – were planted at the Terrigal Community Garden on Thursday, December 11.

The herbs have been instructed to grow lush for the Summer and for the garden’s official opening in February, 2026.

It comes almost four years after the call was put out on social media for help in creating a community garden, with the first sod turned in May this year.

President of the garden, Marianne Hamilton, said the committee had been working hard building the beds with the help of the Men’s Shed at Terrigal.

Ferry fares The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has set new maximum fares for private ferry services on the Central Coast for next year.

The new fares will come into effect on January 1.

“The Tribunal’s review was informed by extensive consultation, including a public hearing, stakeholder submissions and a passenger survey,” Tribunal member Dr Darryl Biggar said.

The maximum fare for an adult, single-trip ticket will rise in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for: Woy Woy to Empire Bay (increasing from $10.20 in 2025 to $10.50 in 2026); and Palm Beach to Ettalong (increasing from $14.70 in 2025 to $16.70 in 2030).

These prices will also increase by CPI each subsequent year from 2027 to 2030.

Work on Blue Lagoon Reserve stairs starts in January Work on the construction of new access stairs to Blue Lagoon Reserve at Bateau Bay will begin in January next year.

The stairs were demolished

by Central Coast Council in late 2023 because they were deemed unsafe.

The removal resulted in a massive community backlash and a committee Save Our Stairs (SOS) was formed to advocate for the reinstatement of the stairs.

Following a strong community campaign, the Council was successful in gaining State Government funding to build a new set of stairs.

Councillor Rachel Stanton, who is chair of the Council’s Infrastructure and Assets committee, said she was pleased to learn work on rebuilding the stairs would begin in January.

The update on the stairs followed a meeting Cr Stanton had with SOS members at the weekend to discuss their concerns over the possible demolition of the reserve’s toilet block under the Council’s Public Toilet Strategy.

Members have already met with Councillors Corinne Lamont and Margot Castles, who both supported the retention of the toilet block which is currently locked up and not open to the public.

“It is clear that this is an important issue to the Bateau Bay community and I look forward to continue working

with the community group,” Cr Stanton said.

“The Infrastructure and Assets Committee and Council resolved for a six-month reprieve on any action to demolish the toilet block to allow time for the stairs to be rebuilt and maintenance arrangements to be made.

“A report will come back before further decisions are

made if those arrangements cannot be made.

“The first step is for the new stairs to be built which I’m pleased to announce construction is scheduled to begin in January.

“Once constructed, access to the Blue Lagoon Reserve will resume and the toilet block is intended to be reopened.

“Council is working with NSW

Government agencies and the operator of the local site on the subsequent steps.

“I’m regularly speaking with the Directors on this important issue and will keep the community group informed.”

SOS committee members Lee Mowbray, Judy Townsend, Tom Wilson and Ann Attwater, who met with Cr Stanton, said they welcomed the councillor’s interest and time.

Ms Attwater said the committee was looking forward to Cr Stanton’s support and aimed to work closely with her to ensure positive and constructive communication.

She said the toilet block played a vital role in making the area accessible and usable for the whole community.

“The SOS committee shared the community’s enthusiasm to begin using the reserve again and also their concern about the possible demolition of the toilets,” Ms Mowbray said.

Ms Townsend said she hoped usage data which will be used to determine the use of the toilet block would be conducted over busy holiday periods like Easter and Christmas.

Work to begin on St Huberts Island channels Work is set to begin on revitalising the St Huberts Island canals to improve amenity, boat navigation and the local environment.

Central Coast Council first put together a plan of works in 2017, but works were never undertaken.

Councillor Jared Wright has been working with St Huberts Island Residents Association to create a pathway for works to occur as part of Council’s fouryear delivery program.

The framework put forward

by Cr Wright was passed by Council at its December meeting.

The works are to be delivered using the restricted funds set aside for St Huberts Island from jetty and boat ramp licence fees and will also include a four-year recurrent dredging program.

Cr Wright said he had been working closely with residents over the past 12 months to kickstart the process and ensure that Council was taking action to support the community and local environment.

“Residents at St Huberts Island have been waiting years for works to be undertaken and we now have the processes in place to make it happen,” he said.

“From here, Council staff will work with the community to identify priority works and get them into our ongoing fouryear delivery program.

“Having spoken to residents

across the Island, priority areas will likely include dredging, stormwater drainage works and the removal of sentiment and debris across the canals.

“The community is front and centre of this process, to make sure we are delivering on their needs.”

President of the St Huberts Island Residents Association Kevin Hill said the Association was pleased to see the process progressing, noting residents were eager to see works carried out in 2026 and beyond.

“There is a clear need for works to be undertaken on the canals and while we have been working alongside Council staff for years to plan these works and discuss the process, we are pleased to know that works will now be undertaken,” Mr Hill said.

said the trials currently being undertaken by Council across the canals were working well and he believed similar works were needed more broadly on the Island to improve amenity, navigation and natural environmental processes.

“Council is currently undertaking trials on the canal system to reduce sentiment build up and redistribute much of the sand which over time, has found its way to the middle of the canals, creating a need for dredging,” Mr Stapleton said.

Staff at Central Coast Council will meet with the St Huberts Island Residents Association in early 2026 to start developing the plan of work.

A report will then be brought back to the relevant subcommittee at its second meeting of 2026.

Afternoon tea celebrates community groups Central Coast Council hosted an afternoon tea on December 9 to recognise 53 local groups recently awarded funding through the annual Community Grants Program.

The program plays a vital role in building a stronger, more connected community by enabling local organisations to bring meaningful projects and events to life.

Council’s Community Grants Program comprises three key streams including the Community Development Grant Program, the Community Events and Place Activation Grant Program and the Community Support Grant Program.

The Community Support Grant Program remains open all year, with applications assessed monthly and successful recipients acknowledged throughout the year.

Central Coast Mayor Lawrie McKinna said the Community

Grants Program played an important role in fostering inclusion, celebrated local identity and encouraged collaboration across the region.

“These grants give local organisations the support they need to deliver valuable programs and initiatives,” Cr McKinna said.

“By investing in their work, we are improving the quality of

life for our community today and helping to build a stronger, more resilient Central Coast for the future.”

Council Director Community and Recreation Services Melanie Smith said Council provided support to local groups in the grant application process through two grant writing workshops and four grant information sessions.

“A total of 115 applications were received and assessed, with 53 recommended for funding,” Ms Smith said.

“These successful projects stood out for their ability to deliver broad community benefits across the entire Central Coast, from fostering social connection to creating vibrant public spaces.”

Applications for the

Community Development and Community Events and Place Activation programs will open again in June 2026.

Applicants are advised to look out for workshops in April, May and June to support the development of their application and discuss their proposal with Council’s grants officers prior to submission.

Wyong pool’s days are numbered The future of Wyong Memorial Pool is limited with a plan to maintain it only until a “replacement facility becomes available in the local area”.

Central Coast councillors made the decision at their ordinary meeting on December 9 and re-affirmed that decision on December 16.

Labor councillors tried to get the decision reversed at the December 16 meeting, called specifically to deal with three rescission motions.

They asked councillors to commit to rebuilding the pool in

its current location once it reaches the end of its life span.

But the five Liberal councillors – John McNamara, Trent McWaide, Rachel Stanton, Jared Wright and Doug Eaton (independent Liberal) – and three Team Central Coast councillors – Lawrie McKinna, John Mouland and Kyla Daniels -voted them down.

A community petition to save the pool, signed by 1,159 people, had been tabled at the December 9 meeting.

The recommendation to that meeting from the Community and Culture Committee had been to confirm that the Wyong Pool be retained with all

references to closing and decommissioning it removed from the Draft Central Coast Council Leisure and Aquatic Strategy 2025-2035.

But Cr Eaton put forward the change to maintain it only until a replacement facility becomes available and that was adopted 8-7.

That decision was re-affirmed at the December 16 meeting where all three rescission motions were defeated.

The second one saw the Liberal and Team Central Coast councillors re-affirm the decision to sell council-owned land in Mann St, Gosford, including the former council chambers.

Council is currently in negotiations with the University of Newcastle, which wants to buy the building for student accommodation.

Labor councillors had hoped to pause the sale to give the community a chance to have a say.

The third rescission motion attempted to reverse a decision to retrospectively approve Cr Eaton’s attendance at a regional planning panel meeting and to approve his payment for attending.

Labor councillors had hoped to get independent legal advice on the implications of a nonpanel member participating on panel business.

Again, councillors all voted the same way they had the week before.

The meeting opened with a minute’s silence for the victims of the Bondi Beach shootings.

Council steps up to help bushfire victims

Central Coast Council has set in motion a range of supports to assist residents affected by the Koolewong on December 6.

Skip bins for use by fireimpacted residents have now been delivered to Koolewong exclusion area, and waste collection services have recommenced where bins are able to be accessed.

Replacement bins are also progressively being delivered where bins were destroyed in the fire.

“We want to support affected residents in a practical way, so Council officers worked to put together a package that will help with clean-ups, waste disposal, and making properties safe by assessing hazards and removing dangerous trees and other items where necessary,” Mayor Lawrie McKinna said.

“Our aim is to complement the work of the lead agencies.

“We are working closely with the Rural Fire Service as preparations are made for the handover to the NSW Government Reconstruction Authority, noting that much of our support package can only

be implemented once access to the site is permitted.”

Council has established a bushfire recovery program to a maximum value of $1M. It will provide residents with the opportunity to order additional and bulk kerbside

collections and additional collections of existing bins for disposal of excess household waste.

For roads currently closed, regular weekly collection services will resume immediately once access is restored.

Council will also establish a pre-DA building advisory and development assessment service at no charge for residents to help in fasttracking the rebuild of destroyed or damaged houses.

Development application fees and planning certificates

for these rebuilds will be waived.

Council will provide support to the RFS to make properties safe where houses were destroyed or damaged by the bushfire, including the removal of unsafe trees on public and

private land and there will be support for uninsured residents located in the bushfire management exclusion zone to remove burnt-out vehicles caused by the bushfire.

It will work with residents who have had their houses destroyed or damaged to identify additional support mechanisms that Council can consider and extend the current Council rates hardship program to apply to affected residents.

Director Environment and Planning Luke Nicholls said Council would be updated to ensure that any additional needs and/or changes in the support package were addressed as needed.

“We obviously want to ensure that we are actually delivering what is needed with Council’s capabilities, so we will continue to talk with residents and the lead agencies and modify/ change our support if required,” Mr Nicolls said.

“More information will be provided in coming days and weeks.”

Deepwater helps fundraise for Koolewong fire victims Deepwater Plaza is encouraging shoppers to donate to victims of the December 6 Koolewong fires via QR codes displayed throughout the centre.

The codes link directly to the GIVIT and the St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies) Koolewong Fires fundraising portals.

Vinnies is working locally through its Woy Woy office to support affected individuals.

The local organisation has created a dedicated fundraising portal in response to community feedback requesting a locally managed donation option.

Donations of $2 or more to Vinnies are tax-deductible.

Centre Manager Paul Savelberg said the community response remained crucial as

residents begin the recovery process.

“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by these devastating fires in Koolewong and the surrounding areas,” Mr Savelberg said.

“As a community hub for the Central Coast, we have a responsibility to make it as easy as possible for people to help their neighbours in need.

“That’s why we’ve made donating simple – just scan a QR code whilst you’re shopping, and you’re directly supporting families who’ve lost so much.

“Every donation, whether it’s $5 or $50, will go straight to supporting affected residents through Vinnies’ local Woy Woy office.

“When our community faces

Deepwater Plaza is leading by example with a $10,000

donation to the appeal and encourages other local businesses to contribute what they can to support those affected by the fires.

The fire, which was contained

in the Koolewong Reserve and surrounding areas, impacted residents across Phegans Bay, Woy Woy Bay Road and neighbouring streets.

The evacuation centre that was established at Gosford RSL Club has now closed.

Shoppers can support the appeal by: scanning QR codes on signage throughout Deepwater Plaza; visiting the Deepwater Plaza website; donating directly at my. fundraise.vinniesnsw.org.au; and sharing the appeal with family and friends on social media.

“Koolewong is our neighbouring community, and when our neighbours are hurting, we all feel it,” Mr Savelberg said.

“We’re making it as convenient as possible for our shoppers to contribute whilst going about their day.

“Every donation, no matter how small, will make a real difference to families who’ve lost so much through Vinnies’ locally based support.”

Vinnies works directly with affected individuals to identify exactly what residents need, from emergency accommodation and clothing to household essentials and groceries.

The appeal is now open, with an end date to be confirmed as recovery efforts continue.

A spokesman for the Rotary Club of North Gosford said everyone was being generous

and the club was matching each donation dollar for dollar.

Four days of collections resulted in $24,000 which will result in a donation of $48,000.

Funds will be distributed quickly in consultation with service providers and local authorities.

Upgrade for the road to Kariong The NSW Government will spend $4.5M on an upgrade to the Central Coast Hwy between West Gosford and Kariong over coming weeks.

Critical slope stabilisation work will be carried out on the westbound lanes to maintain the network and ensure the safety of road users and the community.

Central Coast Hwy is a vital connection between the M1 and the Central Coast, with the westbound lanes alone carrying about 17,500 vehicles each day.

Preparatory work including vegetation clearing has already begun, with stabilisation work beginning on Monday, December 1.

Work is expected to take eight weeks, weather permitting, taking advantage of lower

traffic demand through the holiday period.

The stabilisation work

includes installing erosion and sediment control, installing approximately 335 “soil nails”

– rods up to 9m long drilled into the slope – and horizontal drains, placing high tensile steel mesh over the soil nailed slope, reinstating the safety barrier where required and pavement resurfacing.

Member for Gosford Liesl Tesch said the work was essential.

“The Central Coast Hwy at Kariong is one of the most important connections for our community between the M1 and Gosford, and a route thousands of locals rely on every day,” she said.

“This investment ensures this main entry to the beautiful Central Coast is safe, strong and well-maintained for our community and visitors.”

New look for Kariong Neighbourhood Centre Kariong Neighbourhood Centre is set to broaden its appeal with a State Government grant to provide repairs for the facility.

The centre’s general manager Sarah Webb said the $28,272 Community Building Partnership funding would be used to replace and repair fencing and decking, increase shaded areas and purchase a defibrillator for community use.

“Facility improvements are planned to enhance and increase the opportunities for

community use of the centre by providing greater privacy and security for both centre users and residents in neighbouring properties,” Ms Webb said.

“We are looking forward to offering safer and more accessible facilities for families and community members hiring the centre.

“We know that people find the centre welcoming and flexible for different uses and the planned improvements will only add to this.

“Our future improvement plans include a drop in space

for community members to relax, grab a coffee, and meet up with friends.”

Member for Gosford Liesl Tesch said the money would be used to improve security and access for community members at what is a muchloved neighbourhood centre.

“The Kariong Neighbourhood Centre is such a magnet for the surrounding suburbs and the hinterland, offering everything from playgroups for the young to tai chi for seniors and plenty in between,” Ms Tesch said.

“It is part of the fabric of the

mountain and the people of the region make good use of its facilities.

“So, it was only fitting that when the centre needed some help with repairs that the State Government came to the party for such a worthy public amenity.”

In the latest round, the Gosford electorate has secured $450,000 in funding for a total of 22 infrastructure projects supported by the $41M 2025 Community Building Partnership grants program.

Sophie’s plan ensures a good start to the day After attending a women’s health workshop run by elite athletes Harriet Brown and Lucy Wellborn, 13-year-old Sophie Kooger decided she needed to take more care with nutrition – not only hers but that of her North Entrance Surf Club rookies and patrolling members.

Brown and Wellborn run KaMama Community, a program aimed at educating and inspiring athletes, especially female athletes, to feel comfortable in their skin

and have the confidence to chase their goals.

KaMana’s workshops give athletes the chance to learn more about their bodies, feel empowered, and reach their potential.

Sophie came away from the workshop, held at Shelly Beach Surf Club, deciding she needed to be more conscious of her nutrition, especially ensuring she didn’t skip breakfast.

But she went one step further, deciding her friends at North Entrance Surf Club also needed

to have a decent breakfast to start their day – and along the way, raise some money for the club’s rookies program.

“Sophie was struggling with nutrition, not really eating enough,” mum Vanessa said.

“She often skipped breakfast because she starts early and our club does not have a canteen or café.”

Sophie took the bold step of writing a proposal to the North Entrance Surf Life Saving Club Board outlining her plan to hold

a breakfast on a Sunday once a month.

She then contacted a number of Central Coast businesses who were only too happy to get on board with the plan with Sanitarium donating 200 reusable bowls and enough boxes of Weet Bix to last six months.

Coles at The Entrance agreed to donate a box of bananas once a month while the Little Big Dairy Co and East Coast Juice also came on board, donating milk, flavoured milk, juice and water.

Member for The Entrance David Mehan donated money to buy ingredients for Sophie’s healthy baked snacks.

So now, once a month, for a gold coin donation, North Entrance Surf Club members can enjoy a nutritious How Many Can You Do breakfast.

The first breakfast was held at the start of November where Sophie raised $524 for the club’s rookies program.

“I am so proud of her,” Vanessa said.

“When she first proposed it, I

said you will have to run with it and she has really taken it on.

“All money raised will go directly back into the rookies program to help with camps, purchase of nipper boards and the hopes of having a nutritionist or athlete come to the club to educate the nippers and rookies about healthy eating.

“Our surf club loves giving back to the community.

“I am super proud of her for coming up with the idea.”

Vandalism could see carpark close The carpark at the southern end of Avoca Park could face closure if senseless acts of vandalism don’t cease.

Most recently residents noticed substantial damage to the newly planted grass area of the carpark due to cars tearing up the area intentionally.

A Council spokesperson said repeated incidents of damage and vandalism in the carpark have resulted in significant repair costs.

“These costs are funded by ratepayers, which means the broader community bears the financial burden for the actions of a few,” the spokesperson said.

“While Council has a responsibility to manage community assets in a way that is fair, sustainable and accessible, if this behaviour continues, Council will have no choice but to close the carpark to prevent further damage and unnecessary expense.”

Repairs begin on The Entrance boardwalk Central Coast Council has begun urgent repairs to The Entrance boardwalk to restore safe public access along the waterfront, with works scheduled to be completed before Christmas, weather permitting.

The boardwalk, located north of the Azzurro Blu complex, is a much-loved feature for residents, businesses and visitors.

The works are to address maintenance issues left by the outgoing lessee, to ensure the community can once again enjoy uninterrupted access to the iconic space.

Central Coast Mayor Lawrie McKinna said restoring The Entrance boardwalk was a priority for Council.

“This waterfront space holds great value for both our community and visitors,” he said.

“We’re committed to reopening it as soon as possible so everyone can enjoy our beautiful waterfront safely.”

The works will include repairs to the boardwalk structure to replace rotted and damaged timbers, allowing safe passage for all.

In addition, Council is

currently reviewing the Azzurro Blu complex, a major waterfront hospitality and dining complex.

The review aims to support refurbishment works that will restore the venue and ensure it remains accessible and enjoyable for the community.

Council asks everyone to keep personal safety front-ofmind and remain behind any barriers while works are underway along the boardwalk.

Dedicated volunteers benefit from funding Central Coast charity We Care Connect has received a grant of more than $26,000 thanks to the NSW Government Community Building Partnership Program.

Minister for Central Coast and Member for Wyong David Harris presented the cheque to We Care Connect volunteer founder Derryck Klarkowski and volunteers.

The grant will go towards solar panels, fans and installing

a loading dock and window awnings to improve weather conditions for volunteers, octogenarians and those with disabilities.

“The grant will provide essential resources to volunteers dedicated to serving and strengthening our community, enabling them to sustain their efforts and expand their positive impact,” Mr Harris said.

The project will benefit more than 100 volunteers who have

supported over 36,000 vulnerable children by helping to organise over one million community-donated essentials such as toys, cots, clothing, books, blankets and prams.

Each year the organisation provides essential school supplies to children in need through its Back-to-School initiative.

“During our peak program times like Christmas and Back2School, temperatures often exceed the high 30s with

high humidity,” Mr Klarkowski said.

“In Winter, the warehouse is freezing, and volunteers bundle up in jackets, scarves, and gloves.

“On extreme days, operations have halted due to health concerns.

“Volunteers are the heart of We Care’s workforce; efficiently cooling the warehouse space in Summer and warming it in Winter ensures volunteers of all ages and abilities, including

children and seniors, can safely and effectively contribute to reducing the day-to-day impact of childhood poverty for local kids.”

Messages of support for Jewish community Messages of support for the Jewish community on the Central Coast and nationwide have been pouring in following the devastating attack at Bondi on Sunday, December 14.

A spokesperson for the Central Coast Shalom Jewish Congregation said members were “shocked, saddened and horrified” by the heinous act.

“Even though it was in Sydney, any attack on Jewish people affects us all and many of us have been to the Bondi Chanukah celebrations in previous years, which adds to the hurt,” the spokesperson said.

“Finally we, along with the vast silent majority of Jews and Christians who we know support us, are calling on the Albanese government to finally take some firm action to stop any future attacks and stop the growing disease of antisemitism in this beautiful country.”

Central Coast Mayor Lawrie McKinna said the shooting was a “heartbreaking moment for the nation”.

“On behalf of my fellow councillors and all Central Coast Council staff, I extend heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones affected by this horrific act,” he said.

Council flags were lowered to half-mast on Monday

Cr McKinna also acknowledged the exceptional bravery and dedication of police, paramedics, all first responders, hospital staff, Surf Life Saving volunteers and the many community members who stepped forward to help, showing remarkable courage in the darkest of moments.

As a mark of respect for the victims, Council flags were

lowered to half-mast on Monday, and a minute’s silence was observed at Tuesday’s Extraordinary Council Meeting.

Minister for the Central Coast and Member for Wyong David Harris said the “targeted act of terror” shattered “a night meant for light and joy”.

“My heart is with the Jewish

community – including families here on the Central Coast – and with every person grieving this senseless loss,” he said.

“Hate will not define us, and our police and emergency services are doing everything possible to keep people safe.”

Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said he was “deeply

distressed and disturbed” by the antisemitic terrorist attack.

“This was an attack on innocent people and an attack on our nation’s Jewish community, who were celebrating the first day of Hanukkah,” he said.

“My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the first responders who acted with extraordinary bravery in a time of need.

“In a moment of darkness, we have seen light with our community coming together to stand against antisemitism, support one another, and show that hate has no place in Australia.”

Anglican Bishop of Newcastle Dr Peter Stuart said Newcastle Anglican stood with the Jewish community of Bondi, and wider Australia, in condemnation of the “vile and evil acts of terrorism”.

“Families and friends were enjoying precious time together,” he said.

“We live in a country where we anticipate that we can go about that freely and safely.

“The introduction of violence by people who intended to cause great harm has no place in our community.

“Our nation has been shaken; our hearts are a little darkened.

“However, we cannot bow to those who undermine our values.

“We live in a multi-faith, multicultural society which celebrates differences.

“Hanukkah and Christmas are about joy and peace; let us hold that close to us.”

Central Coast Friends of Palestine extended sympathies to all those affected by the devastating event.

“Violence harms innocent people, spreads fear and has no place in society,” a spokesperson said.

“We condemn all acts of violence that target individuals or communities, regardless of background, ethnicity, or faith.

“We acknowledge the courage shown by members of the public who acted to protect others during the incident at Bondi.

“In particular, we recognise Mr Ahmed Al-Ahmad, whose brave actions helped to prevent further loss of life.

“We believe that care and compassion should be extended to everyone without distinction.

“We reaffirm the importance of working together to prevent violence and loss of life everywhere, including the loss of culture and community.”

Special celebration for two remarkable women

Ettalong Diggers celebrated the 100th birthdays of two remarkable women on November 21.

Sunflower Legacy women, Bonnie Carey and Gladys Donovan, have both reached the incredible milestone.

Ms Carey was guest of honour at a special celebration at the club.

Although Ms Donovan was sadly unwell and unable to attend in person, she remained very much part of the celebration.

Cherie Pulley, Senior Electoral Officer representing Federal Member for Robertson Dr Gordon Reid, attended the event and collected Ms Donovan’s gifts, flowers, and morning tea to deliver to her on the day.

The celebration featured morning tea, performances from the Ettalong Over 55’s Centre Community Choir, and heartfelt words shared among guests.

special presentation of stunning flowers from CEO Colin Murphy.

“It was a truly memorable morning as we honoured the extraordinary lives, wisdom and legacy of Bonnie and Gladys,” a club spokesperson said.

“Historically, the Sunflower Legacy group was connected to the local War Widows’ Guild, and many of the women who are now part of the club’s Legacy program were originally members of that association.

“Over time, as the local War

Widows’ Guild numbers declined and membership changed, the group evolved into a broader social and support network for senior women in the community.

“Legacy is an iconic Australian charity that was established in 1923 and founded on a promise made from a soldier to his dying mate.

“The sunflower symbol represents longevity, strength, warmth, and resilience — qualities shared by each of these incredible women.”

McDonald’s was seeking approval to build a two-storey restaurant on a 2,073sqm block on the corner of Main Rd and Evans Rd, formerly home to a smash repair business.

The development application attracted more than 400 submissions and a petition with 1,000 signatures objecting to the proposal, primarily surrounding its location on the corner of a busy intersection and close to the school.

In November, residents rallied near the site to show their opposition.

When news of the panel decision became public, Member for Wyong David Harris said on Facebook that it was a sensible decision.

“Congratulations to everyone involved in this campaign; sensible outcome; amazing community solidarity – the organisers should be very proud,” he said on Central Coast Council Watch.

As Australia heads into peak bites and stings season, the Australian Reptile Park has joined forces with CSL Seqirus and St John Ambulance to remind residents just how important awareness and first aid are when it comes to snake and spider encounters.

Coasties should: download the free Australian Bites and Stings App; dress and pack a bag for the bush or the beach with an in-date first aid kit, snake bite kit, mobile phone, and food and water; wear long pants, enclosed shoes and stay on the trails; never touch wild animals or get too close or put their limbs in places where they can’t see; and wear heavy duty gloves and be careful when lifting logs, rocks, or debris.

For more than 20 years Musicians Making a Difference (MMAD) has been helping disadvantaged youth on the Central Coast find their voice through music.

It has just launched its Sounds Like Home Christmas appeal with a haunting version of Silent Night filmed in the Woy Woy pedestrian tunnel and featuring seven young Australians who have survived the kinds of childhoods no child should – involving trauma,

homelessness, violence, and abandonment.

The raw, haunting version of the favourite Christmas carol hits harder than any glossy Christmas ad – because the line “sleep in heavenly peace” was never theirs.

While loving families across Australia decorate trees and sing carols this week, tens of thousands of children are bracing for a very different December.

Where Christmas meant danger, crisis and nowhere safe to go - this is who The

Unbroken Carollers are singing for.

“They’ve faced the unimaginable - but they’re still unbroken and still singing,” MMAD co-founder Dominic Brook said.

“They’re proof that a safe home can change everything.”

“We are going to use it for our Sound Foundation program, helping at-risk youth rewrite their stories through music and mentoring,” Mr Brook said.

“We focus on helping the kids find their place in the world through music.”

Rising from humble beginnings, they now operate from Gosford headquarters, which has seen the addition of a podcast studio and dance studio over the years.

“Hearing the stories of some of these kids is amazing,” Mr Brook said.

“Some say MMAD has saved their life, others say it has really helped in hard times.

“This money will help us continue our work.”

It’s surely time for action at the policy level (with) governing approvals co-ordinated by the NSW Department of Planning under legislation and under various SEPPs (State Environmental Planning Policy).

This plan won’t ease housing crisis Central Coast Council has voted to support the State Government’s Draft Strategic Conservation Plan.

This plan clears the way for construction of 14,000 new homes through the destruction

of between 35 and 70 million native plants, including endangered species and ecological communities, all without further environmental assessment being required.

Council voted to support the plan along party lines (at its November 18 meeting), despite a protest by at least 50 concerned citizens outside the council chamber and the very vocal opposition by a number of speakers at the meeting.

Councillor Eaton said that the plan was imperfect but necessary to deliver more housing to ease the housing crisis.

Unfortunately, it won’t.

Australia’s housing industry has the capacity to construct about 160,000 dwellings per year.

They are working flat out and have been doing so for decades.

Anyone who has actually tried to find a builder to do a job for them recently can vouch for this.

for development won’t increase the capacity of the industry by a single dwelling.

But it will clear the way for destruction of between 35 and 70 million native plants.

Those who say we need to import more tradesmen to solve the problem don’t know what they are talking about.

As someone who recently built a house as owner-builder, I can tell you we wouldn’t just need more tradies, we would need more architects, engineers, town planners, certifiers, surveyors, plumbers, electricians, concreters, roofers, tilers, landscapers, etc, etc.

And if we did bring in more tradies, they would need houses, furniture, clothes, food, education, medical services, etc. and just make the problems even worse.

Then they would bring in their families.

The truth is we don’t have a housing crisis, what we have is a population crisis.

A growing population allows big business owners and executives to increase profits, dividends and annual bonuses every year, without having to go to all the trouble of increasing efficiency or innovation.

And politicians have convinced themselves that they need the donations from big business to outspend their enemies on election advertising in order to get re-elected, and to keep getting those donations they have to deliver the policies big business want, while convincing the voters they are acting for them.

The end result is this 30-year rampant development plan, cynically named the Draft Strategic Conservation Plan.

Public trust in our political leaders and institutions is at record lows and falling; and for good reason.

They have been taking us for fools – and it has been working quite well, for them.

A search is underway for this caravan

Police are appealing for public assistance withs an investigation into a theft of a caravan underway.

On Thursday, December 11, officers attached to Tuggerah Lakes Police District commenced an investigation following reports of a caravan trailer being stolen.

Police were told a white 1997

white Windsor caravan trailer was parked on Woodbury Park Dr, Mardi, between 5pm on Wednesday, December 10, and 5.50pm onThursday, December 11.

Recognition for role in police training Leading Senior Constable Paul Baird of Tuggerah Lakes Police District has been recognised in the NSW Police Force Trainer of the Year Awards.

He was acknowledged for his role as a Field Training Assessment Officer, responsible for training Probationary Constables, and commended for his wealth of knowledge and patience while

providing constructive and honest feedback.

A spokesperson for Tuggerah Lakes Police District said: “We are all very proud of Paul and all the experiences he brings to our command.

“To have an officer with 35 years frontline experience still keen and willing to mentor our young Police is a win for our team on the Central Coast.”

Lanyon celebrated the largest class to attest in 13 years from the NSW Police Academy in Goulburn.

The graduating Class 367 also marked a significant milestone in recruitment for the NSW Police Force with the 1,000th student to graduate in 2025.

Cyclist critically injured in hit and run A cyclist is in a critical condition following a crash near Lake Macquarie, on Sunday, December 14.

Just after 11am emergency services were called to the intersection of the Pacific Hwy and Awabakal Dr, Nords Wharf, after a collision between a cyclist and a car.

The cyclist – a man aged in his 40s – was treated by NSW

Ambulance paramedics at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

The car, believed to be a black Toyota SUV, failed to stop after the collision.

Police are asking the driver of the Toyota or anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Boost for police force on the Coast

Thirteen new probationary constables have boosted the police force on the Central Coast following their graduation on December 12.

Their first day on the beat after eight months of training was Monday, December 15, with two new officers at Brisbane Water Police District and 11 at Tuggerah Lakes Police District.

A man has died following a single-vehicle crash on Yarramalong Rd, Wyong Creek on Sunday, December 14.

Tuggerah Lakes Police received reports at about 11.20am that a Nissan ute had left the road and crashed.

The driver, a 45-year-old man, was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics but he died at the scene.

Two dead following crash at Wadalba A driver and a passenger have died after two vehicles collided head-on near Wyong.

At about 2.15am on Sunday, December 14, emergency services were called to Pacific Hwy at Wadalba, following reports of a collision between a sedan and a hatchback.

The 45-year-old female driver

of the hatchback and her 38-year-old female passenger both died at the scene of the accident.

A 49-year-old man driving the sedan was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for arm and leg injuries before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

Circus fever has hit the Coast with Roundabout Circus launching its Summer holiday program.

Kids are set to flip, fly and beat the boredom blues from Saturday, December 20.

The program is a high-energy mix of circus camps,community celebrations and a call-out for the next generation of young performers.

With kids desperate to escape the “I’m bored” season and parents counting down the days until school returns, the not-for-profit Gosford circus school is rolling out its biggest holiday offering yet.

Program includes the popular Drop & Shop camps giving kids a full circus morning and a Christmas movie while parents brave the shops.

This will be followed by a month-long lineup of January aerials, acrobatics, juggling, balance skills and speciality workshops.

Jake Cassar releases Yowie novel

Central Coast conservationist and bushcraft teacher Jake Cassar has added “author” to his résumé with the release of his debut novel, The Cave.

Set in bushland around Rocky Ponds, the story follows a young man who is ambushed, kidnapped and held captive by the Australian Bigfoot, known as a Yowie.

The novel draws on Cassar’s deep knowledge of the local environment and his long-

standing interest in Australian folklore.

Cassar said the book took nearly a decade to complete.

“It was a long and winding road and took nearly 10 years to get to the stage where I could give the go-ahead for the book to be printed,” he said.

“I took extra work as a labourer and at times worked seven days a week to help pay for professional editing, proofreading and graphic design.

Kick off the new year with a laugh or a workshop The weeks after New Year can be a bit of a let-down, but The Art House at Wyong has just the thing to keep everyone entertained.

Adults can join Jimeoin at 7.30pm on January 6 for his unique blend of observational humour, physical expressiveness, and spontaneity.

Laugh along as Jimeoin turns the everyday into the absurd, often riffing on mundane moments; and get a peek inside the comic’s life as he bounces from one quirky thought to another.

For the younger set, from January 7 The Art House is offering a three-day workshop series designed for young people aged 12–17 who want to explore the art of filmmaking and screen drama.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or already experimenting with creative work, you’ll get the chance to write scenes, learn core principles of drama, and try out basic filming techniques.

This workshop is for anyone curious about writing, filmmaking, or expressing themselves as an actor.

Through practical, hands-on exercises, participants will write, act, and direct.

The workshops are free but a deposit of $20 will be required to secure a place.

Participants must attend the three days to receive the deposit back at the conclusion of the workshops.

“With this debut book, Jake showcases his talent as a storyteller, blending elements of fiction, non-fiction and autobiography to create a narrative that’s both thrilling and refreshingly original.”

Cassar said the book was dedicated to readers drawn to Australian legends and unexplained creatures.

“I dedicate this book to anyone who shares my fascination with the legends of mystical creatures and has a

burning desire to know more,” he said.

An author’s pre-launch reading will be held at Mangrove Mountain Hall on Saturday, December 20, at 2pm which is open to the public.

Special exhibition at The Entrance Artist and author Wendy Adams will present a very special exhibition at The Entrance Gallery from December 27-February 8.

Attendees will be able to see 23 paintings, hear the artist’s story, watch her video, and view her art and craft work.

Doyalson-Wyee RSL Sub-Branch celebrates 67 years The Doyalson-Wyee RSL Sub-Branch has celebrated 67 years of supporting veterans and their families.

The journey began in July 1958 when Mr Keith Kelly and Mr Jack Haigh canvassed the area to gather the necessary number of people to form an RSL Sub-Branch.

Its Charter of Membership was awarded on November 22, 1958, with Mr Haigh elected as the first President.

Current President Bob Dokter said that since its inception, the Sub-Branch has evolved significantly while maintaining its core mission of supporting veterans and their families.

He said while we acknowledge those who have gone before us, we should also acknowledge those veterans who have served or are still serving our country.

“The Sub-Branch’s role is crucial in achieving this acknowledgment and providing

practical support to veterans and their families,” he said.

There are often misconceptions about who qualifies as a veteran.

Many people mistakenly think the term only applies to those who served in the World Wars.

However, the Australian Veterans’ Recognition (Putting Veterans and their Families First) Act 2019 defines a veteran as “a person who has served, or is serving, as a member of the Permanent Forces or as a member of the Reserves”.

This modern definition acknowledges the varying nature of the day-to-day operations undertaken by the Australian Defence Force.

The distinction between the RSL and an RSL club is one of the most common public misconceptions.

One of Umina’s best-loved food institutions, Bremen Patisserie, has entered a new chapter with secondgeneration baker Sean Gregory taking over after decades of ownership by founder Ron Bruns.

For locals, Bremen Patisserie is more than a bakery, it’s part of the neighbourhood rhythm.

Founded by Ron Bruns, who emigrated from Bremen in Germany, the Ocean Beach Rd

patisserie became renowned across the Central Coast for doing things the proper way, combining traditional German baking with classic Aussie favourites.

Under Brun’s energetic stewardship,Bremen Patisserie built a formidable reputation, winning multiple Best Pie in Australia awards while also becoming known for its German pastries, tortes and cakes, all made mit liebe.

Now the rolling pin passes to Sean Gregory, who says he is honoured to take on such a well-established business.

“I’m very proud to take over Bremen Patisserie,” Mr Gregory said.

“It’s an institution.”

Baking runs deep for Gregory.

His father owned Gregory’s Bakery, making him a secondgeneration baker who grew up in the trade.

“I’ve been around bakeries my whole life,” he said.

While the award-winning pies remain a hero, Gregory says the patisserie’s broader range is just as important.

“We do a lot of cakes and pastries as well, including German pastries and tortes,” he said.

“Some of them have won awards too, so there’s a lot of good stuff.”

to Umina and now lives just four streets away from the shop.

“I’m not quite a local yet, but I reckon owning Bremen gets you pretty close,” he said.

Imperial Centre sale signals confidence in Gosford CBD Renewed confidence in Gosford’s CBD is now flowing directly into the commercial property market, with the sale of the Imperial Centre last quarter setting a new regional benchmark, according to information from Real Commercial.

The Gosford shopping centre has changed hands for $62M, the highest price paid for a regional shopping centre in NSW since 2021.

The figure more than doubles the price paid just four years ago, when the centre was acquired for about half that amount by Melbourne private equity firm IP Generation.

The sharp uplift reflects both

substantial on-site improvements and a broader shift in sentiment toward Gosford’s city centre.

Recent renovations, combined with the decision to anchor a large section of the upper level to an education provider, have stabilised tenancy and repositioned the asset as a long-term investment rather than a short-term turnaround.

Industry observers say the sale is a clear signal that the co-investment now reshaping Gosford, across transport, education, residential development and hospitality, is beginning to translate into tangible commercial value.

The Imperial Centre is now in

the hands of a private family, however the outgoing vendors had previously commissioned concept plans from DKO Architects for a major mixeduse redevelopment.

Those plans reportedly envisaged a future project incorporating up to 470 residential apartments above a revitalised retail and commercial base.

While no new development proposal has yet been lodged with Council, the recordbreaking sale underliens a view among some investors that Gosford CBD assets, once ignored, are now being reassessed as significant holdings in our rapidly evolving regional city.

ChromeFest 2025 a success and economic boon Central Coast Council is celebrating the success of ChromeFest 2025, with this year’s festival drawing an impressive 58,000 visitors to The Entrance and injecting an estimated $12.6M into the local economy across the threeday event.

The iconic festival, one of Australia’s largest celebrations of classic cars, rock ‘n’ roll, and retro nostalgia, once again transformed the foreshore into a vibrant hub of live music, markets, dancing, and showstopping chrome displays.

Visitor numbers exceeded expectations, highlighting ChromeFest’s ongoing growth and importance as a major tourism driver for the region.

Central Coast Mayor Lawrie

McKinna said the festival’s success reinforced the Central Coast’s reputation as a top destination for major community events.

“ChromeFest continues to be one of the Coast’s most popular events,” he said.

“It brings thousands of people into our local shops, cafes, restaurants and accommodation.

“This year our region welcomed 58,000 attendees to the festival and experienced a $12.6M boost to the economy.

“It is testament to the hard work of our events team, volunteers, local businesses, and the community who support this festival year after year and make it the success it is.”

Major investment in ground upgrades Central Coast Football (CCF) has committed to invest more than $1.1M over the next five years to upgrade community football facilities, following the approval of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Central Coast Council.

The partnership will deliver better playing surfaces, lighting, and amenities to support the Coast’s largest participation sport.

“Football families deserve safe, reliable and modern facilities that can keep up with our growing game,” CCF CEO Alex Burgin said.

“Every season, thousands of footballers miss out because our fields simply can’t cope with heavy rain.

“On average, more than 1,500 games are lost each year to washouts – that’s hundreds

of hours of kids and families sitting at home instead of playing the sport they love,” Mr Burgin said.

As part of the first wave of projects, CCF has already allocated more than $240,000

toward upgrades at three local grounds.

Ourimbah Soccer Oval will receive a new drainage system to improve field capacity and reduce wet-weather closures at a cost of $141,480.

At Bloodtree Oval, $73,221 will see a new drainage system to improve reliability and playing conditions and Patrick Croke Oval will enjoy a $30,000 lighting and amenities refurbishment.

The partnership aims to see drainage and surface upgrades match population growth and football’s rise as the number one participation sport.

To support the delivery of the works, CCF has partnered with Solutions+ as its Strategic Facilities Partner.

Solutions+ will work with CCF on long-term field sustainability, including drainage, turf management and surface rehabilitation programs for Pluim Park, Bloodtree Oval and all Council upgrade works.

Mr Burgin said the growth of women’s football added further urgency.

“Off the back of the Women’s Asian Cup, CCF is preparing for a record 5,000 female participants next season – and they all need quality fields to play on,” he said.

CCF has also confirmed it would consult with other

sporting users to ensure the benefits extended beyond football.

Improved drainage, lighting and facilities will mean more reliable fields for both Summer and Winter codes across the Central Coast.

“This commitment is about giving players and clubs the fields they need to thrive,” Mr Burgin said.

“We’re grateful for Council’s support in approving the partnership, and proud that football is driving these investments for the benefit of the whole community.”

The new Facilities Funding Agreement ensures CCF’s long-term investment will directly benefit Councilmanaged football grounds, with priorities to be reviewed each year in line with participation growth and community need.

New Vinnies store opens at Terrigal Vinnies NSW has launched its newest shop in Terrigal, with the beachside store bringing a new sustainable shopping experience to one of the region’s busiest hubs.

The store offers a curated range of high-quality items from clothing and shoes to books and DVDs. “Opening this store is a significant milestone,” Regional Retail Manager Paula McCormack said.

“The shop is the first charity store to open in Terrigal and the first new Vinnies Shop to open across the Central Coast in over 10 years.

“We are excited join the 10

other Vinnies Shops across the region and look forward to giving back to the local community.”

During opening morning, customers browsed the shop’s collection whilst enjoying treats sourced from Lemmy’s Terrigal and coffee from Freestate Cafe.

The buzz in the store set the tone for what the new shop represents: a welcoming community hub where every purchase helps make a difference.

“Vinnies Terrigal will allow locals and visitors to shop quality pre-loved goods whilst helping support Vinnies NSW’s vital services,” Ms McCormack said.

“Every item purchased in store allows Vinnies NSW to fund programs and services which provide food and clothing, financial aid, food assistance, and housing support to locals in the Central Coast who are facing hardship.”

In the past year alone, Vinnies NSW has supported more than 3,600 people in Terrigal and surrounding areas, providing over $439,000 in financial and material aid.

About four in five people sought food assistance, whilst one in two reported housing stress.

These concerning statistics reflect the growing pressures faced by households across the state and underscores just how

many people are finding themselves needing extra support.

Anyone experiencing hardship or simply curious about the services that Vinnies NSW provides is encouraged to visit the new Terrigal store to find out how Vinnies can help and connect you with local support.

He is such a favourite that he has once again been recognised on the national stage, placing second among the top 12 Coles team members across Australia for the second consecutive year.

The 12 are being celebrated this Christmas for putting the ‘super’ in supermarket with their stellar service, daily dedication and community commitment Mr Coyle, who has worked at Coles Erina for 17 years, was recognised for his lightning‑fast checkout skills, outstanding service, and knack for making every customer feel like a VIP. “It’s really nice to be recognised,” he said.

“I just try to make sure everyone gets what they came

in for and leaves happy, and I always go the extra mile to make that happen.

“The holiday season at Coles is very special.

“The locals, the Coles team and people visiting the Central Coast are all in high spirits, and this nomination is a nice way to end the year.”

Businesses welcome workers’ comp reforms Business NSW has welcomed workers’ compensation premium relief delivered for thousands of Central Coast businesses after the major NSW political parties clinched a commonsense deal.

The landmark agreement between the NSW Government and Opposition reforms the state’s under-pressure workers’ compensation scheme.

While a do-nothing scenario would have seen premiums shoot up at least 36% over three years, the new deal will freeze average premiums at their current rates for 18 months.

For Central Coast businesses, this means immediate cost

stability and the ability to plan and invest with confidence.

“These reforms are an early Christmas present for hardworking business owners who are already enduring significant cost pressures,” Business NSW Regional Director Scott Goold said.

“Freezing premiums for 18 months provides certainty and relief at a time when many operators are under intense strain.

“The NSW Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane needs to be commended for listening to the business community and taking a leadership position on such a critical issue.

“The NSW Government and Treasurer Daniel Mookhey’s focus and courage on these reforms has paid off and must also be commended.”

Key changes include: an increase in the Whole Person Impairment (WPI) threshold to 25% (from July 2026); an 18-month legislated cap on iCare premiums, with future adjustments based on an updated impairment model; additional benefits and an intensive return to work

program for some workers above the 20% WPI; and reforms to the reasonable management action defence for businesses to ensure they are not unfairly subject to illegitimate claims.

“These workers’ compensation reforms are a major step towards the scheme achieving sustainability,” Mr Goold said.

“One in five businesses told us they would be forced to close if compelled to pay a 36% increase in premiums.

“Instead, the new deal will put significant downward pressure on premiums and ensure workers get the support they need.

“We thank Premier Chris Minns for meeting with Business NSW Central Coast members in June to hear

firsthand the challenges businesses faced under the Workers’ Compensation Model.

His leadership in driving these reforms has been critical.

“We also commend Shadow Deputy Leader Natalie Ward and Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch for their engagement in November and strong advocacy for a fairer system.

“Their collaboration across the political divide has delivered a win for businesses and workers alike.

“This is also an important example of what can be achieved when our local businesses stand together and advocate for critical change.”

The reforms, to be legislated in the new year, will save NSW businesses hundreds of millions of dollars.

These savings will help

businesses make crucial, productivity-driving investments in staff, equipment and innovation.

The deal also includes provision for a new successor to be developed to replace the government funded Business Connect program.

The program, which offered critical advice to burgeoning businesses, was ended earlier this year.

“Business Connect was an important program which helped thousands of SMEs thrive, however the new program must have greater reach and enhanced capabilities,” Mr Goold said.

“We look forward to working with NSW’s elected officials to ensure this program has the impact and funding envelope it deserves.”

Clues are planted with subtlety, and the novel builds toward revelations that feel both surprising and inevitable.

The pacing is brisk, and the dialogue is crisp, often carrying an undercurrent that keeps the tension from becoming oppressive.

While the book keeps the compulsive readability of a beach-ready thriller, it also offers emotional heft and is incredibly heartwarming.

I really enjoyed this, from the first page; it is incredibly unique.

The long-standing partnership between The University of Newcastle and the Academies of Sport on the Central Coast (CCAS) and in the Hunter (HAS) has been renewed for another three years to the end of 2028.

The extension reinforces a shared vision to empower young athletes and students across the Central Coast and the Hunter regions through education, sport and community engagement.

The University of Newcastle remains a cornerstone partner of the CCAS and HAS, ensuring athletes and students benefit from world-class opportunities both on and off the field.

CEO of the Regional Academies of Sport Brett O’Farrell said the partnership was about more than sport, and was creating pathways for

young people to succeed academically and athletically.

“The University of Newcastle has been an outstanding supporter of our mission, and we’re proud to continue working together to strengthen regional talent and opportunity,” he said.

The collaboration provides athletes with continued access to education pathways and degree opportunities, with regular university-led information sessions and the ongoing Sports Scholar Program.

Under the renewed agreement, The University of Newcastle will take on an exciting new role as Major Partner of the HAS Triathlon Program, marking a significant expansion of its support for regional sport.

In addition, The University of Newcastle will maintain its

active involvement in Indigenous Talent Identification programs across both the Hunter and Central Coast regions.

Together, these initiatives highlight a shared commitment to creating inclusive pathways and opportunities for athletes of all backgrounds.

Protecting eyes in harsh Australian sun Most Australians know the importance of protecting their skin from the sun, yet many still overlook one of the most vulnerable parts of the body – the eyes.

Living on the Central Coast means long days outdoors, strong UV levels, and a lifestyle that keeps us active near the water.

All of this increases exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which can quietly damage vision over time.

Prolonged UV exposure is linked to cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium (often called “surfer’s eye”), and even certain eye cancers.

These conditions don’t appear overnight.

They build slowly, often without symptoms, until vision is noticeably affected.

The good news is that simple, consistent habits can greatly reduce your risk.

Look for sunglasses labelled AS/NZS 1067; this Australian

Standard guarantees proper UV protection.

Wrap-around styles or larger frames provide extra coverage, especially when light reflects off sand or water.

A broad-brimmed hat can cut UV exposure to the eyes by up to 50%.

Children need even more protection.

Their lenses are clearer, allowing more UV light into the eye, and damage done early in life increases long-term risk.

Encourage kids to wear goodquality sunglasses and hats from a young age.

Regular eye examinations are another key defence.

Conference a defining moment for Bianca Crossing the Tasman Sea to New Zealand was a defining moment for Toukley Indigenous student Bianca Williams, who recently represented Deakin University on the world stage at the World Indigenous Peoples’ Conference on Education (WIPCE) 2025 in Auckland.

Ms Williams, a Wiradjuri and Gomeroi mum of three and grandmother of four, is a social work student with Deakin’s National Indigenous Knowledges Education Research and Innovation

(NIKERI) Institute and works locally as a Social and Emotional Wellbeing Consultant in Aboriginal Mental Health.

She was among thousands of Indigenous educators, students and knowledge holders who gathered from across the globe to share culture, knowledge and innovation.

“It was unlike anything I’ve experienced before,” she said.

“You’re immersed in a sea of colour and culture.

“You get to be Blak and deadly in a space where everyone understands the systemic

challenges we face … and overcome.

“It’s validating; it’s a celebration.”

Her journey to the global conference was deeply personal.

Her father, the late Professor Bob Morgan, was instrumental in the founding of WIPCE and was a champion of Aboriginal education for more than four decades.

Balancing study, work, motherhood and grandparenthood, Ms Williams credits NIKERI’s flexible, culturally safe model of

education for making it possible to pursue her goals while staying grounded in community and family in the Toukley region.

Her attendance at WIPCE formed part of a larger Deakin University delegation which included Indigenous academics, teaching scholars and cultural leaders.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Indigenous Strategy and Innovation, Professor Mark Rose, said Deakin’s participation in WIPCE 2025 reinforced the University’s commitment to culturally

grounded, community-centred education.

For Director of NIKERI, Karinda Burns, Ms Williams’ journey reflects the Institute’s purpose – to empower Indigenous learners through culturally inclusive, achievable higher education.

Ms Williams saw her own story reflected in a global movement of strength, resistance and cultural pride.

She has returned to Toukley with renewed purpose to continue her work in social and emotional wellbeing for community.

Teen takes out men’s singles for first time in 60 years

Surf club upgrade Long-awaited upgrades to the Copacabana Surf Life Saving Club have been completed just in time for the peak Summer holiday period.

The improved facilities include a state-of-the-art first aid room and an upgraded kiosk area, strengthening the club’s ability to support local surf lifesavers and enhance safety outcomes for beachgoers at Copacabana.

Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said the club plays a vital role in keeping the community safe, and the upgrades will ensure volunteers have the facilities they need to continue their important work.

Crouch acknowledged the dedication of Club President Tom Tseng for his vital role in advocating on behalf of the club to secure the funding, which was awarded by the former Liberal-National Government as part of the 2022/23 Surf Club Facility Program.

In 60 years no junior bowler has ever won the Bateau Bay Bowls men’s major singles.

That changed this year when 17-year-old Sam Griffiths swept all before him to win the Bateau Bay Bowls prestige Whitey’s Rite Price Tyres Men’s Major Singles event.

This event is hotly contested and Bateau Bay Bowls, a Club with close to 400 members, ensures that winning it is a major achievement.

In winning the singles, Sam, of Terrigal, defeated some bowlers very senior to him, not just in age, but in status.

Among those contesting this year’s club championship were bowlers who have represented the Central Coast region and NSW State Bowls teams.

Sam was totally impervious to reputations, but did maintain his humble attitude in winning and displayed wonderful sportsmanship throughout the games.

Many at the club were not surprised by Sam’s success, as he had just returned from Tasmania after representing

the NSW U/18 team in the 2025 Australian U/18 National Championships at Devonport Country Club.

Sam, as a member of the NSW Fours and Triples teams, won silver in both events.

More medals were yet to come, when both the NSW boys and girls teams were declared national champions resulting in Sam receiving a gold medal as part of the boys team, plus a gold medal as part of the NSW team which was named Australian champions.

It had been nine years since NSW had won the U/18 Australian Championship.

Sam began to play bowls seriously around the age of 12.

While he plays rugby league for Terrigal Sharks, if there’s a bowls game at the same time, bowls comes first.

“Meeting new people is my favourite thing about bowls,” Sam said.

“It’s always so cool hearing different stories on how they started, how they have got where they are.

“I love hearing more and more about the game, and

having people around who have had many experiences in the game helps that.

“Winning the major singles was very unexpected, coming in for my first year at the club – at such a big club – I was very happy with the result.

“In the future I would like to get a sponsorship helping me grow my game to be better and hopefully one day to play in the Commonwealth Games for Australia and win a gold medal.”

Earlier in the year, Sam was a member of the NSW Schools Bowls team that travelled to

Club Pine Rivers in Queensland to compete in the School Sport Australia National Bowls Championships.

Sam represented in the triples and fours picking up bronze medals in both events.

The NSW team finished second overall in the championship resulting in Sam receiving a silver medal as part of the team.

The crowning glory for Sam was being named in the AllAustralian team at the conclusion of the championships.

His key achievements and

highlights also include winning the singles, pairs, and fours at the 2022/23 Bowls Central Coast U18 Championships, being selected for the NSW under-18s boys squad for the 2023/24 season, awarded a CHS Blue (highest school sport honour) for his performance in bowls for Terrigal High School, captaining his Terrigal High School team to victories in high school bowls competitions and named runner-up in the junior South Pacific singles and pairs events with Ettalong’s Oscar Hide in 2022.

Sam has a big year in front of him academically, and on the bowling greens.

2026 will see Sam enter Year 12 at Terrigal High School to undertake the HSC, and with the NSW Open Pennants starting in February, he will be a hot contender for a position in the Bateau Bay Bowls Grade 1 team.

As Bateau Bay singles champion Sam is also eligible to enter the NSW Champion of Champion Singles to be played in Sydney in 2026.

Cricketers bring home Country trophy It’s been 22 years, and the NSW Country Men’s Opens championship trophy is back where it belongs with the Central Coast team victorious on the day.

Captain Liam O’Farrell, Coach Simon Keen, Manager Ashley Keen, and the entire playing group did the Coast proud.

The Central Coast lads rolled North Coastal for 207 in just over 44 overs with the bowling unit doing a fantastic job (Lachlan Rainger 3 for 34, Lachlan Cork 2 for 34, and Scott Burkinshaw 2 for 42).

Then the batters went to work with evergreen Peter Cross (42 from 38) and skipper Liam O’Farrell putting on a 96 run first wicket stand.

The skipper went on to compile a man-of-the-match 81* from 88 balls, and he was well supported by a swashbuckling Callum Rainger who peeled off 51* out from just 25 balls.

The Coast registered a comprehensive win in just the 31st over with six wickets in hand.

In local competition, Men’s 1s

had a bye due to the Open team final.

And inclement weather on Friday put pay to day 2 of the Women’s 1s fixtures for the Round.

This Thursday, December 18 the Women’s Open team contests the Plan B County Plate Bash final on the hallowed turf of the SCG. And the U16 girls are doing battle this week in the NSW Country U16 championships which are taking place at Bowral from December 16-18.

Meet Mick Bell also known as Mr Rookies Meet Mick Bell, who should affectionately be known as Mr Rookies after having a dream back in 2000 to create a competition for new bowlers come true.

Bell, who plays for Bateau Bay Bowling Club, approached the Royal Bowling Association with his concept – a competition for bowlers with less than 18 months’ experience, featuring singles and pairs events.

The concept impressed the administrators and they gave Bell the go-ahead to run the competition.

By 2001, Rookies Bowls became a reality.

Initially it was just a Sydney

metropolitan competition; he soon expanded it by contacting the Zones within the State, inviting them to run their own Rookies competitions and send the winners to the Sydney event.

Events like this need support and funding, so Carlton United Brewery came on board as a sponsor and secured a set of bowls from Aero Bowls to be raffled.

The popularity of the Rookies increased rapidly, attracting new bowlers who would soon go on the represent NSW. “Without bragging too much Corey Wedlock was one of those,” Bell said.

Australian lawn and outdoor bowler who was ranked world number two in 2024.

In 2009 The Rookies became an official State event and in recent years the competition has

become a major event attracting bowlers from all over NSW. The Rookies compete in qualifying rounds before heading to Raymond Terrace Bowling Club where they play a sectional round robin with section winners before progressing to the finals knock-out games.

Bell’s passion for the Rookies is evident in his presentation of Encouragement Awards during the finals at Raymond Terrace.

Those players who exhibit outstanding teamwork, enthusiasm, a positive attitude and a genuine love for the game are singled out and presented their awards personally by Bell.

As a wonderful tribute to Bell

the awards are known as the Mick Bell Encouragement Award, a very fitting gesture to the Rookies founder.

Bell is a very handy experienced bowler himself and his knowledge of and enthusiasm for the sport is immeasurable.

He has some wonderful stories about the Rookies, especially about some of the ‘greats’ who got their start via the Rookies competition.

He remains quite humble about his achievement in creating this statewide competition and continues to encourage new bowlers from the Central Coast to enter.

Elite-level tennis coaching on Peninsula Tennis on the Peninsula is getting a fresh injection of elite‑level coaching and community spirit with the launch of Coastline Tennis Academy, led by former pro‑tour player Jono Cooper at Woy Woy Tennis Club.

Cooper isn’t just any coach — he brings a pedigree built on experience, competition and proven coaching success.

Admitted to the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) at age 16, he competed on the international circuit for five years before transitioning into coaching.

His coaching philosophy centres on strong fundamentals, technical precision, physical

conditioning, footwork, and mental preparation — giving players of all ages a chance to improve sustainably under professional guidance At his previous home, Gosford Tennis Club, Cooper spent more than six years as Head Coach — building out programs from beginner Hot Shots through to high-performance junior squads.

In 2020, he proved his own oncourt talent too, taking out the open men’s singles title at the club championships.

match play, coursework squads, and regular club tournaments — a testament to his focus on

technique, footwork, strength, conditioning, and match‑play readiness.

Coastline Tennis Academy brings a full range of programs for kids, teens and adults — from fun beginner Hot Shots to performance-focused junior squads.

The Academy also offers group and private adult lessons, high-energy cardio tennis sessions for fitness, and multiday school-holiday camps designed to keep kids active and build confidence.

“I’m excited to bring what I’ve learned over years of playing and coaching to my home community,” Cooper said.

“My aim is simple: give kids and adults on the peninsula access to top‑level coaching,

build skills, confidence and a love for tennis — from their first racquet to competitive match play.”

Mixed weekend for the Mariners as women surge It was a weekend of split fortunes for the Central Coast Mariners, with the women continuing their rise up the Ninja A-League ladder while the men were edged out at home in a tight contest.

The Mariners men went down 2–1 to Auckland FC on Friday

night, December 12, at Polytec Stadium, despite creating enough chances to take something from the match.

Auckland struck first, before the Mariners levelled 20 minutes on through pressure down the right flank, with a Storm Roux cross forcing an own goal.

The visitors restored their lead just before the hour mark and held firm, leaving the Mariners with just one point from their past three outings.

Coach Warren Moon said the side was “in every one of those games,” but stressed the need to turn competitive performances into results.

On Sunday, December 14, the Mariners women delivered a composed 2–1 win away to Western Sydney Wanderers at Wanderers Football Park.

Isabella Coco Di-Sipio opened the scoring with a clever lob in the 18th minute, her first for the club.

Isabel Gomez doubled the

advantage 10 minutes later with a clean strike from inside the box.

A late Wanderers goal in the 90th minute tightened the finish, but the Mariners held on for their first away win of the season.

The result lifts the side into fourth place and strengthens

its growing reputation as one of the form teams of the competition.

Both squads now turn their attention to a busy summer run of fixtures, with the women looking to consolidate their top-four push and the men searching for a spark to convert effort into points.

The family of Ken Ross travelled to Queensland in droves to see the late Central Coast resident and former cycling champion Ken Ross posthumously inducted into the AusCycling Hall of Fame on December 3.

One of the Central Coast’s least known sporting heroes, Ken Ross was a professional cyclist between 1917 and 1937 including 18 months riding in Europe (1921/22).

He was a contemporary of Sir

Hubert Opperman and throughout his career he rode with and against nearly all of the world’s best cyclists.

He and his wife Elsie lived at Green Point from 1925, moving to Avoca Beach in 1948, where Ken lived until his death in 1974 at the age of 73.

His daughter Helen Walters of Avoca Beach was accompanied to Queensland by three of Ken’s grandchildren, four of his great-grandchildren and one of CONRETING his daughters-in-law.

A big crowd turned out for the annual Wyong Magic Millions meeting at Wyong Race Club on Wednesday, December 10.

The feature event, the 2YO Magic Millions, was taken out in emphatic fashion by the Bjorn Baker-trained Paradoxium who was ridden by Jason Collett.

The colt, a $400,000 purchase

by Extreme Choice, secured his place in the $3M Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast on January 17 withWednesday’s impressive victory.

Baker, who was on track at Wyong and who won the Wyong Trainer’s Premiership for the 2024/2025 season, was thrilled with the performance.

“I think he (Paradoxium) might be pretty special,” he said.

The win marked his third Wyong Magic Millions triumph, having claimed the 2024 edition with O’Ole and the 2013

running with Unencumbered; both horses went on to win the Gold Coast feature.

“We’re in the Magic Millions now and I’m hoping it’s third time lucky,” Baker said.

“I’ve won this race twice before and they’ve gone on to win it.

“I think this guy is as good, if not better, than all of them; very, very exciting.”

There was a vibrant buzz across the course, with Baker the star attraction as he mixed with owners, connections, and racegoers throughout the afternoon.

Other prominent racing identities on track included Adrian Bott, Joe Pride and Michael andAnthony Freedman.

Wyong Race Club CEO Greg Purcell said Baker was one of the leading trainers in the country.

“He is an enormous character

who is incredibly popular in the industry,” Purcell said.

“As is the case every year, this race has delivered in spades.

“I notice that Paradoxium is now the $3.50 favourite for the Gold Coast edition and $15 for the Golden Slipper.

“On the back of today’s performance, he’ll be very hard to beat in both races.”

Away from the track Wyong Race Club held a presentation to celebrate its four new life members – Kevin Langby, Paul Levick, Sherryl Palmer and Robert (Bob) Graham – who were congratulated by past and present committee members.

Racing continues at Wyong this Saturday, December 20, with the annual Christmas At The Races meeting, followed by their standalone Lakes Race Day, featuring the $500,000 Limitless Lodge Lakes Mile, on Saturday, January 10.
