Crackdown on construction site practices on Coast A crackdown by SafeWork NSW on dangerous construction site work practices on the Central Coast last week has resulted in 47 improvement notices and seven prohibition notices being issued.

The three-day operation focused on high-risk safety harms and substandard building practices and involved NSW Fair Trading and the Office of the Building Commissioner.

Resolution,, Matt Press visited the Coast to join the operation and was concerned with the approach to safety being taken on some projects.

“SafeWork construction safety inspectors visited 27 sites in the region, issuing 47 improvement notices and seven prohibition notices,” Press said.

“One of the residential projects was particularly concerning, receiving two prohibition notices and 12 improvement notices relating to potential structural formwork collapse, falls, falling objects,

electrical, inadequate access, construction hazards and site facilities.

“There was also a range of building quality issues including water ingress in the basement, inadequate concrete quality, and defective fire-rated door jambs.”

The project will now be audited by NSW Fair Trading’s building inspectors, starting with a review of the declared designs required under the new Design and Building Practitioners legislation.

“We have increased collaboration between

SafeWork and Fair Trading inspectors in the residential construction sector and it’s increasing the reach and effectiveness of both teams as poor safety practices and noncompliant building work are often found together,” Press said.

He said the Central Coast operation focused on: working safely at heights; electrical safety; rooftop solar; mobile and tower cranes; controlling risks from falling objects and structural collapse; moving plant; and the prevention of respiratory diseases such as

silicosis, asbestosis, and mesothelioma.

Small business owners and sole traders are reminded they can apply for a NSW Government rebate of up to $1,000 to make their workplaces safer with $1M recently added to the Small Business Rebate Program.

Four students from Central Coast schools will line up against the state’s best spellers after winning their regional finals to secure spots in the State final of the NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee.

The Arts Unit Premier’s Spelling Bee Support Officer, Desiree Lane, said the move to online regionals finals had been well received.

“We have had feedback from some of our more remote schools on how wonderful the new format is because it allows them to participate where previously long distances had made travelling to regional finals difficult,” Lane said.

Nearly 1,600 students competed in the online regional finals from a starting pool of 165,000 participating students with the most remote student from Bourke-Walgett School of Distance Education, about four hours’ drive from Bourke.

Premier’s Spelling Bee was introduced in 2004 as a fun way for primary school students to engage in spelling.

The program includes activities to encourage all students to improve their vocabulary and spelling and to promote literacy skills in combination with the English K-6 Syllabus.

Czech company to take over Delta Electricity The future of ageing Vales Point Power Station will soon be in the hands of private Czech company Sev.en Global Investments following an agreement by Delta Electricity Group to a 100 percent share sale.

Last Friday on September 16 the St Baker Family Trust and Ilwella Pty Ltd (Trevor St Baker and Brian Flannery), owners of Delta Group, agreed to sell to Sev.en in a transaction encompassing Sunset Power International (Delta Electricity Vales Point Power Station) and Great Southern Energy (Delta Coal – Mannering Colliery and Chain Valley Colliery).

Sev.en is a family office (private) investment group with a core focus on energy and mining and targeting restructuring and growth opportunities.

Its sole owner, Pavel Tykac, is a Czech investor and major player in the Czech energy market.

Sev.en Chief Executive, Alan Svoboda,said Delta’s acquisition would significantly strengthen the company’s presence in Australia, already with a 50 percent interest in InterGen at Milmerran and Callide power stations in Queensland.

The company also has four gas-fired UK power plants and owns one of the largest US metallurgical coal producers, Blackhawk Mining, as well as nine metallurgical and thermal coal mining complexes in West Virginia and Kentucky.

In the Czech Republic, Sev.en operates two coal-fired power plants and two combined heat and power plants.

The sale transaction still has to meet various government

approvals and scrutiny by the Foreign Investment Review Board with a decision whether it is in the national interest expected within the next few weeks.

Delta Electricity’s Chief Executive, Greg Everett, said this was a positive development to benefit customers, employees and system security for all energy users as Delta provided about 11 percent of electricity to NSW.

“Sev.en has shown a clear interest in the Australian energy business, ensuring it is well placed to provide reliable generation through the energy transition and this will strengthen its position as one of Australia’s significant electricity businesses,” he said.

Outgoing Chair of Delta Electricity, Trevor St Baker, said there were opportunities to grow the business and this

could be better accomplished in a portfolio with Sev.en’s other base-load-capable generation interests.

“The sale will facilitate this growth as Sev.en has shown a commitment and ambition to expand, both in Australia and globally,” he said.

Sev.en’s Chief Executive, Alan Svoboda, said the company takeover of Delta would consolidate and significantly strengthen their presence in Australia.

“We make strategic investments with long-term commitment, always looking for ways to make our business more sustainable, support local communities and take care of employees,” he said.

Sev.en’s website says that the company invests in transition towards a more sustainable future with zero carbon emissions in the long term, while striving for growth and prosperity.

However, the ageing Vales Point Power Station built in 1978 is scheduled to close in 2029.

In 2015 it seemed Vales Point Power Station was destined for the scrap heap but after the NSW Government passed it off for just $1M, Sunset Power

International (Trevor St Baker and Brian Flannery) turned the plant around to become the biggest contributor to the power grid and just two years later in 2017 it was reported to be revalued at about $730M. The company took a hit during the Covid pandemic and in December 2021 the value of the plant was reduced to $156M with an annual profit reduced by 93 percent to $9.3M. Trevor St Baker would not reveal the price of the sale to Sev.en but said “we didn’t get close to $700M”.

In February this year, Delta said it had completed preliminary investigations about what work was required to extend the life of the plant beyond 2029 and was committed to a transition to a renewable future.

In a bid for sustainability, the power station entered into a collaboration with Enernet Global in 2019 to install 220,000 solar panels on the rehabilitated section of the power station’s ash dam to feed back into Delta’s electricity supply to the general retail community.

Major road upgrade for Mount Penang Parklands Bolte Civil of Tuggerah is set to commence road upgrades at the Mount Penang Parklands in Kariong.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast, Adam Crouch, said Bolte will work with Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation (HCCDC) to transform and extend Mount Penang’s Parklands Rd, with the $8.75M works being the final stage of the State Government’s $16M infrastructure upgrades to the precinct.

“It’s always great to see local companies like Bolte given

opportunities to work on large civil projects like this, keeping jobs and money on the Coast,” Crouch said.

“Bolte is a Central Coast success story and has a proven track record in Mount Penang, including previous jobs on The Avenue and the current works on Baxter Track.

“On a Mount Penang project in 2020, Bolte created an Aboriginal apprenticeship for a young local worker who is now halfway through his training program and on his way to a rewarding career.”

benefits for the Mount Penang community, including those who visit the Parklands for recreation, work and education.

The extended road will link with Baxter Track in the

Parklands’ north, opening up the new Kangoo Rd entrance to all users of the precinct.

Visitors will be able to enter and exit by north or south access points, reducing traffic

bottlenecks at peak times and improving emergency access.

HCCDC Chief Executive, Valentina Misevska, said the upgrades will also beautify the precinct and encourage visitors to try more active forms of transport.

“We’re making it easier and safer for walkers and cyclists to explore Mount Penang, with new shared pathways and pedestrian safety features being included as part of these upgrades,” she said.

“Parklands Rd is also receiving other visual and functional improvements, including new garden beds,

landscaping around the café, more than 100 off-street parking spaces, new lighting and more than 80 new native trees planted – all designed with water-sensitivity in mind.”

Bolte Civil will begin the upgrades this month, with works expected to continue until early 2023.

OzHarvest makes one millionth delivery on Coast OzHarvest has delivered its one millionth meal on the Central Coast, with the rising cost of living seriously affecting people in need in the region and many experiencing hardships never faced before.

OzHarvest Central Coast has been busier than ever, working to meet the increasing demand for food relief throughout the region and recently delivered its one millionth meal to The Entrance Food Hub.

OzHarvest Newcastle Manager, Richard Stark, said that since starting on the Coast in 2020, more than 2,200 tonnes of surplus food has been saved from ending up in landfill and delivered directly to help feed locals in need.

“OzHarvest Central Coast is a small but very busy team of staff and volunteers,” he said.

“Our yellow van is out and about in the community every week stopping food from going to waste and delivering it to charities, schools and community groups to help

those most at risk across the region.

“There is no doubt the last two years have been incredibly difficult for those we support, with a drastic rise in demand for our services.

“We are now delivering around 7,300 meals every week and are about to get a second van to help meet the need.”

The Entrance Food Hub is one of 28 charities OzHarvest supports every week with fresh and nutritious food.

“This is a huge community

effort from our wonderful drivers, staff, dedicated volunteers, local corporate donors and of course the 24 local business who donate the food to us, including Woolworths, Aldi, Harris Farm and KFC,” Stark said.

Director at The Entrance Food Hub, Miranda Brown, said the charity supports around 130 families each day with demand increasing.

“The food we receive from OzHarvest means we’re always stocked with a wide variety of beautiful fresh produce,

helping us provide food relief to anyone doing it tough,” she said.

OzHarvest’s National Food Rescue Partner Woolworths helps to provide a regular supply of fresh and nutritious food from nine stores in the region.

Woolworths Group Manager, Belinda Page, said the team was passionate about the program.

“Our commitment to identify and divert surplus fresh food to OzHarvest for local charities such as The Entrance Food

Hub, who help feed those in need, is a great example of how a little good everyday can make a big difference,” she said.

OzHarvest Central Coast is in need of extra funding in order to grow and meet the increasing need of the community.

For every $1 donated, OzHarvest is able to deliver two meals to people in need.

Residents want more action on damaged trees at Ettalong Peninsula residents are calling on Central Coast Council to be more proactive in addressing an act of vandalism perpetrated on trees along the Ettalong foreshore.

Council was first notified of the vandalism in late July, with what looked to be drill holes reported at the base of seven native shade trees and poisoning suspected.

A spokesperson said this week that Council had completed an investigation into the damaged trees, but had been unable to identify offenders.

“Council is now considering its options in accordance with the Tree and Vegetation Vandalism Management Policy,” the spokesperson said.

“Consideration of subsequent actions also need to be assessed as to the impact on the broader community.

“Council is continuing to consider all available options in accordance with the policy and will advise its decisions when they have been finalised and approved.”

Residents are calling for more urgent action, with deterrents such as screens, signage and surveillance suggested in the Policy.

Resident Peter Mullins has suggested an effective and

inexpensive response would be to have a canvas banner printed and suspended across the branches of the dead banksias.

“Basic public information is so powerful a weapon against this type of antisocial crime,” he said.

Fellow resident Gary Machin said the community was disappointed, but not surprised, to learn that no offenders had been identified.

“There were a few people in the community who expressed the opinion that the trees were in the way of a water view and impacting local commerce,” he said.

“Council’s Tree and Vegetation Vandalism Management Policy objectives include: To educate and promote the value of trees and vegetation across the Central Coast LGA and a greater understandingoftheimplications from damage or injury to trees and vegetation.

“The Policy states that trees and vegetation contribute significantly to environmental health, and to human health and wellbeing.”

Machin said many long-term residents who live nearby are distressed by the loss of the coastal banksias which are important habitat trees.

“Unfortunately, the damage that this vandalism has caused

is hard to rectify,” he said.

“It takes many years to grow a tree to maturity to provide habitat, safe tree corridors and a healthy environment.

“The Tree and Vegetation Vandalism Management Policy states that physical deterrents to prevent vandalism such as screens, signage and surveillance could be

implemented if there is a budget available for these measures.

“The Policy states that rehabilitation of vandalised sites is to be undertaken to reinstate the vegetation that has been damaged.

“If there is any risk such as dune erosion, Council will undertake immediate remedial action, cost to be covered by the

offender.

“Where there is no offender, what happens then?

“Will Council act to reinstate vegetation to prevent dune erosion?

“We, as a community, should be asking this question.

“Please write to ask@ centralcoast.nsw.gov.au to ask when remedial action will be

taken to cover the loss of (the) mature coastal banksias.”

The Tree and Vegetation Vandalism Management Policy, adopted by Council in February 2021, encourages broader community involvement in the prevention and reporting of vandalism and assisting in the investigation following vandalism.

It reiterates that vandalism of trees and vegetation on community and public land is an unlawful activity, with the longterm management of same “integral to maintaining the economic, cultural, environmental and social values of the Council area”.

“The identification and prosecution of perpetrators of public tree or vegetation vandalism should be pursued consistently,” the Policy says.

Possible preventative measures listed in the Policy include: screens (including billboard style or shipping containers or other appropriate visual barriers) where vandalism is for views; construction of panels with shade cloth and signs identifying tree or vegetation has been vandalised; and installation of surveillance cameras and signs.

Residents of Lower Hawkesbury to discuss flooding concerns with Council Residents of the Lower Hawkesbury are gearing up for a meeting with Central Coast Council Administrator, Rik Hart, on September 24 to discuss their concerns over a possible major spillage at Mangrove Creek Dam. River Cares President, Robyn Downham, said residents are concerned at the possibility of water being released from Mangrove Creek Dam simultaneously with the Warragamba Dam during the next weather event, after a local holding tank overflowed during heavy storms earlier this year.

“We will be looking to discuss possible danger posed to the general public in the Upper and Lower Mangrove, Mangrove Creek and Greengrove areas,” Downham said.

“We would also like to review and discuss the current Emergency Dam Procedures and SES procedures on how residents

will be notified of any danger if the telecommunications go down as they have previously.

“We would like to see a warning system established, such as a siren to warn people in the valley and surrounding areas.”

Downham said Member for Robertson, Gordon Reid, would also attend the meeting to discuss poor

telecommunications in the Lower Hunter area, especially in Gunderman, Cohens Creek, Oyster Shel Road and Mangrove Creek Rd. Hart said it was unlikely a spillage could result in flooding.

Downham said residents had received an alert on August 4 stating that the Mangrove Creek holding tank (at Pembertons Hill Rd) had burst

and was losing water.

“This was alarming news to say the least,” she said.

She was advised by Council at the time that the incident was the result of an old pressure valve failing to open after 30 years of service.

The tank had not burst but had to be left running to ensure water supply to Somersby treatment plant and the

community, she was told.

She was told a new valve had been installed and would be serviced every 12 months.

A Council spokesperson said the operations of Mangrove Creek Dam would be explained at the meeting and the Dam Emergency Plan would be introduced.

“The Emergency Plan provides guidance for the management of various emergencies including flooding,” the spokesperson said.

“The Plan outlines the water levels that trigger activation of the Plan and notification to other agencies, such as the NSW SES. “Council staff at the meeting will explain the roles and responsibilities for agencies and Council, including who will communicate to the residents in the event of an emergency.”

The spokesperson said Mangrove Creek Dam is a storage dam not a flood

mitigation dam.

“Storage dams catch the water from rainfall, as well as run off in the catchment,” the spokesperson said.

“Effectively, what rainfall falls into the dam through rain events also falls into the downstream creek and catchments.

“Communities located along the banks of Mangrove Creek and the Hawkesbury River, regardless of the existence of Mangrove Creek Dam, are vulnerable to flood risk from these large catchments.

“At the meeting on September 24, Council staff will also be able to talk through the functions of the dam (as they relate to) the recent rain event.”

The meeting will be held at Spencer Community Hall at 9.30am, with KariongSomersby Rotary Club to provide a sausage sizzle.

New commissioner’s high hopes for Six Cities Plan As the newly appointed City Commissioner for the Central Coast on the Greater Cities Commission, Robyn Parker is determined to see the region thrive as part of the Six Cities megaregion.

A Coastie for the past eight years, Parker has a wealth of public and private sector experience spanning roles in Child and Family Services, as a TAFE teacher, and as CEO of Ageing and Disability Services.

She served in the NSW Parliament for 12 years, first as a Member of the Legislative Council, followed by four years as the Member for Maitland.

She has chaired many Parliamentary Inquiries and was the NSW Minister for the Environment and Minister for Heritage from 2011-2014.

As Environment Minister, Parker introduced some of the toughest environmental laws in Australia and delivered the largest waste and recycling program in Australia at the

time.

She helped create nine new parks and two new national parks.

Since leaving politics, she has been appointed as a nonexecutive director to a number of conservation, agricultural, education and for-purpose organisations and is also the Deputy Chair of the NSW Heritage Council.

“After selling our small farm in Maitland, we decided to downsize to the Central Coast eight years ago, first living at Terrigal and since 2020 at The Entrance,” Parker said.

“Every morning when I wake up, I think – why would we live anywhere else?

“I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively around the world but haven’t seen anywhere I would rather live.”

Parker said one of the prerequisites for the appointment of commissioners from each of the six cities was that they had to be local to the area they were representing.

“It’s important to understand what it is to live here and the strengths and challenges that presents.

“Our lifestyle on the Central Coast makes us unique.

“All of us want to maintain the uniqueness of being a regional city but we also need to create a region that gets the best for our residents.”

Parker said the commissioners serve as the “connective tissue” between state and local government and will facilitate conversations and empower stakeholders to set common goals for their respective cities.

The recently released Six Cities Discussion Paper, she said, is about what the future is going to look like and how the

six cities can become a connected network of regions which “lift each other up”.

“The plan gives more opportunities for each city to maximise its assets,” she said.

She said housing supply and jobs were at the top of the list of goals for the Coast, along with leveraging transport, social infrastructure and growth that is strategic and connecting innovation districts.

“We have an opportunity now to really crack on and get things done – and this is the process to do that,” she said.

She said a summit to be held later this year, probably in November, would give residents an opportunity to provide input to help shape a plan specific for the Central Coast.

“This localised plan will outline what needs to be done to open up housing and transport links and will feed into the Six Cities Plan, along with other regional plans,” she said.

“The plan should maximise

the advantage of being part of a global city in achieving faster rail and better transport links so if people do have to work outside the region they can do so efficiently.

“We need more employment opportunities close to where people live, and we will be encouraging opportunities for businesses to establish in the region.

“Then we need to ensure a diverse housing supply to cater for that.

“The Central Coast Plan will be tailored to the specific needs of the region and we want to give people the opportunity to give input so we make sure we get our Central Coast vision working.

“This is how global cities work, bringing the advantages of the cities together while they each retain a unique identity – it’s working together with other cities rather than being in a bubble.”

Diggers says thank you to emergency workers As storms ravaged the Central Coast earlier this year, Diggers@The Entrance was called upon to help, activated initially as an Emergency Evacuation Centre and then later as a Recovery Centre, twice within the space of three months.

The club recently hosted a luncheon to thank the many emergency and support workers who were on site.

Heading up the Evacuation Centre was the Disaster Welfare team from Family & Community Services.

Other service onsite were the Salvos, Samaritans, NSW Police, SES, Land & Service Animal Welfare team and chaplains from the Uniting Church.

As each person or family came in, the Disaster Welfare team assessed their needs and sent them to necessary

animals come through the doors.

“The flood victims were very distressed and even more so the second time around; they had only just cleaned up and were hit again,” she said.

“The compassion and empathy shown by the workers and volunteers that were here in the Evacuation Centre is a real credit to their organisations.

“It was very special to witness and that’s why, Diggers@The Entrance, along with Tooheys & Oatley Wines, said a very big thank you to those people by hosting a luncheon.

“It was just a really nice afternoon and lovely to spend time with these amazing people under not so stressful conditions.”

Plan to turn off Opal machines thwarted A legal claim launched by the NSW Government has thwarted union plans to turn off Opal machines on September 21, which would have given Central Coast commuters an indefinite free ride.

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RBTU) had planned to turn off the machines this week in protest over “the Government’s continued refusal to provide safe trains and fair working conditions”.

RBTU NSW Secretary, Alex Claassens, said the action had been designed to cause a headache for the Government and management, without impacting commuters.

He said it had been hoped the move would force the Government to reconsider “its current strategy of stalling negotiations”.

But on September 16, the Government lodged a section 418 application in the Fair Work Commission (FWC) to have the action declared “unprotected”, following legal advice it had received that the action was prima facie unlawful.

“Sydney Trains and NSW Train Link believe the notified action is also unsafe and could cause financial impacts on commuters,” the Government said in a statement on September 17.

Claassens said the claim was “baseless” and aimed at

distracting from the real issue at play.

“The government is … saying that RTBU members had not approved the taking of this type of action,” he said.

He said delegates had made the decision to cancel the action while the legal matter is ongoing.

“Because of this dirty trick, commuters will not be getting free travel from Wednesday,” he said.

“The RTBU NSW is fully committed to giving fare free travel to commuters and is now considering alternative ways that this can be achieved.

“Not only is the NSW Government denying commuters the opportunity to travel for free and put money

back in the pockets of the people of NSW at a time when so many of us are doing it tough, but it is slogging those same people- the state’s taxpayers- with hefty lawyer fees as part of yet another legal case.”

Claassens said the Government seemed intent on “dragging the issue out for as long as possible” rather than “sitting down and trying to negotiate with the union on delivering safe trains and fair wages and conditions for workers”.

Rock fisherman airlifted from Copa Beach An injured rock fisherman was airlifted to hospital after falling from rocks at Copacabana Beach on Thursday.

Around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by New South Wales Ambulance on a primary

winch mission to the rocks on the southern end of Copacabana Beach.

A 43 year old male sustained chest, pelvic and leg injuries when he fell approximately 4 metres onto rocks whilst attempting to access the area for the purposes of rock fishing.

Due to the area being inaccessible by road vehicle, the Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team were winch inserted into the location to treat and stabilise the patient, along with local NSWA paramedics who accessed the area.

The patient was stabilised

before being placed into a stretcher and winch extricated by the helicopter.

He was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

Police patrol pubs and clubs Police are warning that there’ll be a $550 on-thespot fine – no excuses – for people trying to enter a licensed premises after being refused admission.

They will be visible throughout licenced premises and committed to make them as safe as possible.

Police say that “Fail to Quit” is an offence which could be an expensive decision on a night out.

It is an offence to try and reenter or stay at a pub or club after being asked to leave by security, a staff member or

If you have been refused entry or have been removed from a pub or club due to being drunk or disorderly, you must not attempt to re-enter that premises for a period of 24 hours.

This is an offence under S77 of the Liquor Act 2007 NSW. You can be issued with a fine of $550 if you have been refused admission or been removed from a licenced premises because of drunkenness, violence,

disorderly behaviour, quarrelsome, smoking in a non-smoking area, using or possessing prohibited drugs.

When asked to leave the patron should leave the vicinity immediately and not return for 24 hours.

Police are urging people to take responsibility for their actions and if asked to leave, do so.

They say that Failing to quit licenced premises and acts of violence will not be tolerated and it could lead to legal action.

Police seeking witnesses to child assault Brisbane Water Police are seeking assistance from anybody who witnessed an assault upon a seven-yearold child at Terrigal Beach.

The incident occurred at 5pm on Saturday, September 10.

Police are requesting the male, depicted in the picture, also make contact with Police, as they believe he witnessed the event and could provide valuable information.

The man depicted in the picture is not involved in the assault – he is a witness Police believe could help with inquiries.

Kanwal hit-and-run investigation Tuggerah Lakes Police are investigating an incident in Kanwal when a motorist failed to stop after hitting a pedestrian.

The man was walking south along Swan St at about 6pm on Tuesday, August 30, and was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle.

He was knocked to the ground

causing minor injuries to his hands, legs and shoulders and was treated by NSW Ambulance Officers who attended the scene.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and render assistance to the man and drove away from the scene.

Policeman honoured for dedicated service A former Central Coast Police Officer was honoured by his colleagues last week when he retired after 34 years of service.

Sergeant Paul Taylor attested as a Probationary Constable in September 1988 from Class 237.

He performed General Duties at Maroubra, Chatswood, Eastwood and Tuggerah Lakes before being promoted to the rank of Sergeant at City Central LAC in July 2003.

In 2008 he transferred to Brisbane Water Police District

Sgt Taylor farewelled by colleagues

as a General Duties Team Leader until his retirement on September 15.

Last Thursday he was marched out by his fellow officers in a celebration of the significant contributions he has

made to the NSW Police Force and to the community of NSW during his three decades of service.

Call for People’s Tribunal As a tax paying citizen of the Central Coast I find it amazing how outside, politically-appointed bureaucrats are making all the decisions on the future of the Central Coast while those who have invested their life savings and made the Coast their home are restricted to a three minute Public Forum after a rigorous application process.

Addressing Central Coast Council’s Administrator is simply no guarantee that he and others are listening.

Ignoring submissions from the general public has become common place, no matter how good the argument.

Politically appointed and faceless Planning Panels make decisions that suit their political requirements and simply ignore the community’s concerns.

The proposal to engulf the Central Coast into the newly created Six Cities Regional concept and having another politically appointed Commissioner to lead the charge, without any scope for public participation in any manner, is a total disgrace.

FORUM ordinator General, also politically appointed to implement the Central Coast Regional Plan 2036 and now the 2041 Plan, has set an agenda that the Central Coast cannot afford without major improvements to all forms of infrastructure.

As residents travel around our region, all they see is the continued destruction of their bushlands for more and more housing developments which have dramatic impacts on local infrastructure, regional ecologies and everyday life.

The reported solution by Business NSW Central Coast Director to the housing crisis is for a projected increase of more than 400,000 new residents, whilst the Public Health Units of the Central Coast and Hunter New England regions, plus NSW Planning and Ministry of Health have failed to identify why the Central Coast has major health issues.

Many of our suburbs have persons with three or more chronic health conditions quickly reaching 17 percent of their populations and asthma being not far behind, according

to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures.

The Coast cannot afford to increase any new residents until government recommendations from the Coal Ash Inquiry for Epidemiological, Exposure or Health Risk Assessments are completed and findings released.

The reality is that it can take weeks for an appointment with our local doctors or years in some cases to find places for our children in pre-school.

Increasing the population for the sake of increasing council coffers or simply because the NSW Government wishes to drive their own agenda is not the answer.

The answer is with the community having more input into our future and what we want for the Central Coast, not some political decision.

The only way we can accomplish this without elected representatives, is by having a People’s Tribunal or Citizens Inquiry.

This is the answer to ensuring the Central Coast becomes a safe, healthy and desirable place to live, work and play.

Stop the property ‘flog-off’ Central Coast Council Administrator, Rik Hart, must put a stop to the organisation’s land selloff program.

The Administrator has publicly declared that the 2020-21 financial crisis is officially over, and that the Council is on its way to achieving a healthy surplus for 2022-23.

He has stated that $62 million worth of property has been sold

by Council since it commenced its asset selloff in November 2020, which means its $60 million target has been reached.

It follows that Council doesn’t need to sell any more land and we would like Mr Hart to declare a moratorium on land sales immediately.

FORUM The community has heard many mixed messages about the need to sell Council’s assets including that it was a requirement for securing $100 million in loans from a commercial lender.

Promises have been broken - environmental land has been sold and community land placed on the chopping block.

Fire sale prices have been accepted when the community was told that wouldn’t happen.

We are now asking Mr Hart to have a conscience and publicly announces a moratorium on all further land sales.

Shortly before announcing the selloff of assets in late 2020, Central Coast Council had introduced a Land

Transactions Policy (LTP).

Clause 12 of this policy requires Council, as a minimum before selling land, must prepare a business case, land transaction plan and financial impact analysis assessing the strategic value of the land having regard to need, the geographic context, environmental values and applicable strategic plans.

While the financial urgency of late 2020 may have given Council an excuse not to comply with Clause 12, there is no longer any financial need to rush through further asset sales.

The popular Bouddi Art Trail is back over the October long weekend and local organisers have good reason to expect a big turnout for this year’s event thanks to the quality of the artists and a new local sponsor.

The Bouddi Peninsula Arts Trail starts at 9am, Saturday, October 1st and continues until 4pm Sunday 2nd, located across the villages of Killcare, Hardys Bay, Pretty Beach, Wagstaffe and Killcare Heights.

This year 20 locally based artists will open their studios to the public to view and

eventually purchase their works.

Art genres include sculptures, ceramics, oil and watercolour, sketching, photography and silversmithing.

“The diversity and depth of the Art Trail artists is remarkable for such a small community,”

said Lea Turner of Killcare’s Ray White Real Estate.

“We’re really delighted to take on the sponsorship of this marvellous event, as it shows some of the talent and beauty we have here,” Turner said.

Local sculptor and committee member, Leanne Koppen, says

the area has been a drawcard for creative pursuits for as long as people have lived on the land, it can be seen in the rich aboriginal history across the Bouddi Peninsula.

“We’re expecting a big weekend as the event is something many people look forward to and the fact that our

new sponsor Ray White at Killcare has given us the possibility to reach more people outside the area,” Koppen said.

Flash Festival comes to Peninsula Theatre this weekend Woy Woy Little Theatre is set to present its Flash Festival this weekend, featuring six short plays written, directed and performed by local artists.

Action-packed short films set for Avoca The Banff Mountain Festival’s Radical Reels tour is heading to Avoca Beach next month.

The tour will feature 10 of the most extreme, high-adrenaline films from the latest Banff Mountain Festival.

Designed to keep audiences on the edges of their seats, the films feature daring footage of some of the most accomplished climbers, slack liners, BASE jumpers, skiers and snowboarders alive today.

Each action-packed short has

been hand-picked from more than 300 entries to the most recent Banff Mountain Festival.

Filled with wild rides, long lines, steep jumps, and skillful stunts, the films feature thrill seekers in action ice axes, ropes, skis, snowboards and wingsuits in tow.

Settings range from the powdery slopes of Switzerland to the rugged vertical walls of Norway and the treacherous peaks of Pakistan.

“With radically fresh outlooks, these high-energy excerpts

will take you to a place where your heart beats faster, adrenaline courses through your veins and the world whirls by at speed,” a spokesperson said.

Radical Reels will show at the Avoca Beach Picture Theatre on October 21.

Something for everyone in Council’s school holiday program

As the weather warms up, Central Coast Council will deliver an engaging program of activities and events throughout the spring school holidays, with plenty of activities to help families enjoy the outdoors, stay active, and keep young minds entertained.

Council’s Youth Services and local youth providers have plenty of exciting opportunities, events, and workshops to help young people across the Central Coast explore their passions, build skills, and be inspired while connecting and socialising with friends.

Activities on offer range from entering or supporting a mate in the Central Coast Skate and Scooter Competition to enjoying a free movie night, participating in interactive workshops or updating videography or construction skills.

Council is offering a full range of activities for families to enjoy

Families can enjoy sports, active recreation, and physical activity options, with children and adults of all ages encouraged to try something new for free or at an affordable cost.

Options range from swimming and basketball to yoga or another recreational sport, gym and fitness activities.

Families can enjoy colouring-

in activities or creating a cyanotype in the sunshine with T LO Art Pop Up, as part of Council’s fun-filled Creative Spaces programming across the Coast’s town centres.

Dance-lovers can enjoy special music and movement classes with the TipToe Giants Play Pop Up featuring vocals, green screen recording experiences and an insight into the benefits of music therapy.

At Council’s Libraries, kids can get involved in a range of face-to-face and online activities designed to activate young minds.

High school-aged kids (1217) will have the opportunity to work together and put their problem-solving skills to the test by unravelling a compelling story behind an Escape Roomstyle detective challenge.

Go4Fun returns to the Coast next term

A free after-school program to help children get active and eat healthier will return at four locations across the Central Coast next term.

Go4Fun will run for 10 weeks at PCYC Bateau Bay every Wednesday evening from October 12, and at Lake Haven Recreation Centre every Thursday evening from October 13.

Aboriginal Go4Fun, a culturally adapted version of the program, will run at San Remo Neighbourhood Centre every Monday evening from October 10 and Mingaletta, Umina Beach, every Tuesday from October 11.

Go4Fun is a free healthy wellbeing program for children aged 7-13 who are above a healthy weight, along with their families.

Run by trained health and community professionals, it is

Children take part in group activities and games and receive rewards and prizes, while parents benefit from professional tailored advice to help make positive health changes for the whole family.

Go4Fun is a NSW Health state-wide initiative offered on the Central Coast by the Local Health District’s Health Promotion Service.

Health Promotion Officer, Joel Bunn, said there is a growing interest in the program after a COVID-enforced hiatus.

“We’ve seen a steady

increase in interest in our faceto-face programs ever since they started back up again in April,” Bunn said.

“We’re pleased to be offering four 10-week programs across the Central Coast next term and we’re looking forward to seeing lots of happy and active kids, along with their parents and carers.”

For those not able to attend one of the programs in-person, the Go4Fun Online program offers families weekly online sessions and personalised phone support from a Go4Fun coach.

New book for Dr Toni Lindsay Following the success of her first two books outlining coping strategies for cancer patients and their families, Dr Toni Lindsay of Ettalong has published a third – this time appealing to a wider demographic.

The Certainty Myth follows Cancer, Sex, Drugs and Death (2017) and The Cancer Companion (2021) and provides a guide for all in coping with the uncertainty of the past couple of years.

“This book came about as I reflected on the work I do with people living with serious illness and approaching end of life,” Lindsay said.

“It made me think about what’s happened to all of us in last couple of years and I decided to give people ideas for how they might manage the feeling of uncertainty.

“It’s not only COVID-19 – that also has flow on effects.

“People are worried about finance and are rethinking what it means to be doing what they do at work.

“People have been changing jobs and finding different value in the work they do.

“It’s reflective of the big changes around the world in the past three years.”

Lindsay said the human brain tries to hold onto certainty but with people being forced to come together in different forms, many things seem uncertain.

“The book has been coming together over the past 18 months but it really solidified at the end of last year,” she said.

“It examines what it means to sit with yourself and gives options on coping with feelings of exhaustion and how to manage things in this new space.”

The book is very much based on the therapy style Lindsay uses with her cancer patients and gives practical advice and

options on how to accept difficult things which show up in our lives and keep doing the things that are important.

“We often have no control over circumstances – but we can control our reaction,” she said.

“It’s about trying to be present and not focus on the future.

“A simple thing like walking on the beach can help – concentrating on how the sand feels on your toes.

Lindsay said she had noticed that people living with cancer have a heightened sense of what is important in life.

“It is a universal issue – we sometimes struggle with how to prioritise what it is important in the bigger scope of things.”

“Whether you are coping with cancer or with uncertainty the way of managing is the same.”

The senior clinical psychologist works at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney and has also worked at the Gosford Cancer Clinic.

Veteran’s first book a philosophy of living An Army veteran of two tours in Afghanistan and a men’s health mentor has just released his first book which has been 20 years in the making.

Craig Ball of Kanwal has selfpublished Reclaim Your Power, a 150-page guide he describes as a proven process for improving mental health and dramatically increasing happiness.

“Writing the book came about because, since I finished in the Army in 2014, I’ve lost six mates to suicide and it got to the point where I thought that I should put my skill set to good use, things I’ve been teaching for many years, to focus on men and try to somehow address the suicide rate,” he said.

“I had a dream of what I wanted to achieve, to empower men everywhere through free events and support.”

Since the early 2000s Ball has been teaching his 10-module self-improvement course, on which the book is based, and launched into the professional speaking and training circuit including engagements at high schools, various workplaces, trade groups, corporate settings.

He is also a life coach, a consultant, trains people to be

better public speakers and is a change manager.

“Workplace change is one of the most stressful things in people’s lives and I’m working on a project at the moment which is a significant culture change in an organisation.

“At other times I’ve worked alongside a project as a change manager, making sure people impacted by the project are supported and empowered through that.

“My training course, and now the book, has its basis in cognitive psychotherapy with scientifically tested and proven techniques – very much a philosophy of living,” Ball said.

“Some of the outcomes of what people have been able to achieve are quite amazing, for example, at least one blue-collar team has achieved over 1,000 days of ‘no lost time’ injuries which is really significant.

“The mental health training and mindfulness helps people to stop and think how things that upset them don’t necessarily have to, and how choices you make can help deal with things, and how to coach each other through challenges.

“That’s something I had to deal with on a personal level coming back from Afghanistan and the things that happened to us there and it’s incredibly healthy to talk to the mates I served with about what was troubling me and them as well.

“All the things I’d been teaching to others for years before I went to Afghanistan was really put to the test under the cauldron of a war zone and the nasty things that can happen,” Ball said.

Ball recently moved to Kanwal from Penrith and is starting to collaborate with RSL clubs and veteran networks to generate interest in his book.

The question that is used to answer a question that can’t be answered.

That was until March when the appearance of a strange box appeared on the doorstep of every person on earth that was 22 years old and older.

After that day, the question of how long your piece of string means something entirely different.

“These boxes were identical.

All were dark brown in color, with reddish tints, cool and smooth to the touch.

And inscribed on every box was a simple, yet cryptic message, written in the native tongue of its recipient: The measure of your life lies within.”

The boxes were identical except each box had the name of the recipient and each string was of a different length.

No one will know what this means for a while but when they do the consequences will be life changing.

There are those that decide not to open their boxes.

But for those that do life will never be the same.

The story focuses on eight people and how they deal with the appearance of the box in their lives.

Nina and her partner Maura have different length strings.

What does this mean for them as a couple?

Maura joins a support group for short stringers at the local elementary school and befriends Ben. Ben starts a pen pal relationship with Amie, a teacher at the school who is a romantic and buries herself in books.

She is also Nina’s sister.

Hank is an ER doctor and survives a mass shooting in the hospital.

Anthony Rollins, an opportunistic politician is running for president, helps put laws in place that specifical-

ly exclude short stringers from taking up some professions.

Jack is his helpless nephew that is skating through life in cadet school trying to find out where he fits.

Javier is Jack’s roommate and will make a much better soldier than Jack ever would.

Short Stringers get blamed for all that is wrong in the world.

People say they are unhinged from the stress.

It seems ok to be openly biased against short stingers, hold out on insurance policies, loans, healthcare.

The length of a person’s string should have been private, but people felt the right to pry.

“They had brought this upon themselves. Even before the boxes appeared, the traditional barriers of privacy had long been collapsing … already a society of oversharers.”

Short stringers are offered little help while people with long strings take unnecessary risks.

During a trip to Italy Nina asks a shopkeeper if people in Italy chose to open their boxes.

“Some did, but I think most did not.”

“And I did not look because … I am happy with my life.”

“I hear of these Americans, they say the strings have made them think again about their lives.”

“But in Italy, I think we already knew.

We already put the art first, the food first, the passion first…And we already put the family first.

We did not need the stings to tell us what is most important.”

You go Italy!

The book puts forward some very interesting thinking, but I did find that after the big reveal and people had their existential crises the story got a little repetitive.

I felt that I was reading the same conversations over and over.

That isn’t to say that I didn’t enjoy the story because I did overall.

It just fell flat in a few places.

New training centre opens at Tuggerah Intercept Training Group has opened the doors to its new Safety Training Centre at Tuggerah, with an emphasis on the construction industry.

Shadow Minister for the Central Coast, David Harris, was a special guest at the official launch and spent two hours at the centre, checking out the equipment and speaking to guests.

Intercept Training General Manager, Brett Watters, said the company was keen to ensure that the training courses offered are in line with community needs.

“We encourage our job providers to let us know if there

are in demand courses that we don’t currently offer, and we will look at how we can support them and provide them with what they need,” he said.

“The demand for skilled construction workers in the region has increased significantly over the past year.

“This was one of the key reasons for creating the new construction focused training centre.”

Intercept Training Group has been running job ready training courses on the Central Coast and in Newcastle for more than 23 years.

spaces, working safely at heights and forklift licences with additional courses such as smoke hazards in confined spaces and harnessed abseiling to be offered next year.

Central Coast Business Awards finalists announced Business NSW has announced the finalists in the 2022 Central Coast Business Awards, after receiving almost 100 applications.

Business NSW Central Coast Regional Director, Paula Martin, said the awards recognise growth and entrepreneurship and celebrate business success and resilience.

“These awards are a wonderful opportunity to showcase the ingenuity, strength and resilience of Central Coast NSW businesses,” she said.

LEC approves mixed use development for Ettalong A controversial mixed-use development proposed for 227-233 Ocean View Rd, Ettalong Beach, has been approved by the Land and Environment Court subject to a variety of amendments.

Senior Commissioner Susan Dixon upheld an appeal by developer Jedaclew Pty Ltd against a refusal by Central Coast Council of the latest amendment to the commercial and shop-top housing project following a conciliation meeting between the two parties.

Originally proposed as a sixstorey development, the project has had a chequered history, including a refusal from the Central Coast Local

Planning Panel last year.

But Dixon found that the amended development, with a reduction to five storeys and an increase in setbacks, among other amendments, is consistent with the object of the zoning which applies to it.

The Court heard from four objectors, who described the proposal as an overdevelopment of the site and as being “out of character with the seaside village of Ettalong”.

“While some conceded an improvement in the design by the removal of the originally proposed apartments on the sixth level, they remained resolute in their view that the design changes had not gone far enough,” Dixon said.

“They believe that the

amended design does not transition sympathetically with the adjoining R2 low density residential zoned neighbouring sites and its

non-compliant setbacks and height generate overshadowing on adjoining blocks, the public footpath and the roadway.

“One of the submitters also raised concern about the demolition of the historic shops and the removal of healthy vegetation to make way for this oversized development.

“These concerns were also repeated in the written submissions lodged with the Council in response to the notifications of the DA.” After hearing from the objectors the parties sought an adjournment of the hearing to allow the matter to be allocated to a conciliation conference, during which a further set of amended plans was produced which the Council’s experts agreed resolved the issues between the parties and reduced the impacts on the adjoining sites.

Dixon said she was satisfied that the amended proposed development is consistent with the relevant objectives of the zone in that it increases the provision of commercial opportunities and housing accommodation within a higher density residential zone that is well serviced by public transport and is compatible with the surrounding land uses.

She said it allows the construction of additional commercial development and dwellings in line with the needs of the community.

Housing plan to future-proof Red Bus business A residential estate on the bus depot land at Bateau Bay is a plan by The Entrance Red Bus Services Pty Ltd to future-proof its business.

The bus company has been operating between Gosford, Wyong and The Entrance since 1923 and holds a contract with Transport for NSW until June 2024.

For the first time, Red Bus will be forced to compete in an open tender process for contract renewal which they believe raises the likelihood of a large foreign-owned multinational company taking

over, as has happened across Sydney and Newcastle.

Red Bus has occupied the Bateau Bay site at 682a Coleridge Rd since 1981 and will continue local bus services, however, should their contract with Transport for NSW not be renewed, rezoning of the site enables alternative development options.

A planning proposal before Central Coast Council is to rezone the 5.261ha site for 35 future home sites and in the meantime allows the bus company to continue operating.

The planning proposal is being considered by the Local Planning Panel at its meeting

on September 23 and will then go before Central Coast Council’s meeting on October

11 for a final decision.

A Council report says that the proposal aligns with the direction of the regionally significant Karagi growth area (in the Central Coast Regional Plan 2041) for urban activation, future rapid transport bus routes, harnessing of green infrastructure for residential use and the expansion of housing stock alongside neighbourhood centres.

The concept plan is for a 35 residential lot subdivision with a minimum size of 450sqm.

A public reserve access track to Council’s water reservoir along the eastern

boundary will be retained as well as the dam and four hollow-bearing trees, while the Swift Parrot habitat areas along the north-eastern and eastern boundaries will be restricted and conserved as a buffer to Wyrrabalong National Park.

Council staff are backing the Planning Proposal and say in a report to the October 11 meeting that it is suitable to forward to the Minister of Planning requesting a Gateway Determination, pending final approval by Administrator Rik Hart.

Landmark 24-storey tower for Kooindah Waters Mercure Kooindah Waters is investing almost $90M to build Wyong’s first highrise hotel tower to attract tourism to the region at a world-class standard.

Plans include alterations and additions to the existing hotel, serviced apartments and golf club along with construction of a 24-storey tower comprising 97 serviced apartments, 98 residential units, restaurant, bar, conference centre and additional parking.

Commercial and tourist enterprises already on the site will be upgraded and expanded to a level to compete with larger venues in the Newcastle, Wollongong and Sydney region for events and conferences.

Analysis undertaken in the Statement of Environment Effects (SEE) established that this development is the right mix of uses and building form in the right place, with limited and acceptable environmental impacts and positive economic and social outcomes.

The SEE says that the development would provide 196 jobs in construction and 102 new jobs when complete.

It is an opportunity to capture the high-value Sydney corporate, domestic and

international tourism market, attracting an additional 46,451 overnight visitors generating an estimated $6.46M per year to the economy, the SEE says.

This is the final stage of the 2002 Master Plan for a fully integrated resort and residential community with a variety of bars and restaurants, with the hotel tower as its significant,

iconic attraction.

It says in the SEE that the landmark tower has a small building footprint relative to its density, being 24-storeys and

86.5m high.

Facades of the building are modulated with balconies and windows, and the curvature form assists to soften its bulk

and scale.

There will be an additional 253 car parking spaces, some in basement parking, taking the total for the whole development to 463.

It is also proposed to open a more direct walking/cycling route to Wyong rail station and commercial area via Warners Ave, which will shorten the distance to 1.4km.

The resort at 50 Parry Pde and 40 Kooindah Boulevarde already comprises Kooindah Waters Golf Club, Mercure Kooindah Waters Hotel and serviced apartments as well as 252 private homes.

There are 20 hotel suites, 44 apartments for short-stay guests, an 18-hole golf course with pro shop and clubhouse, restaurant, bar, function rooms, a health club, tennis courts and swimming pool.

The regionally significant development proposal will go to the Hunter and Central Coast Regional Planning Panel for consideration, as its capital value is more than $30M, and the development application (1750/2022) can be viewed on Central Coast Council’s website.

New retailers set for Erina Fair Erina Fair is gearing up for Christmas, with a number of new retailers set to open, including several national and international brands, and other stores to relocate within the centre.

Loyalty has generous rewards, so pack your bags WITH

Michelle BALTAZAR Editor-in-Chief • Money magazine During the worst of the pandemic, many of us kept our frequent flyer membership card tucked away in our wallets, unused and forgotten.

That is changing as more people revive holiday plans or travel for work.

Here’s what you need to know about the latest reward programs offered by major banks and credit card providers.

1. Sign-up bonuses are generous To stay on top of the latest deals, check out Point Hacks, a leading website featuring guides, articles and promotions around frequent flyer points (pointhacks.com.au).

For example, recently NAB and Westpac were offering up to 120,000 bonus Qantas points on a new credit card, while Citi was offering 100,000 bonus Virgin Australia Velocity points.

If you run a business, they also give extra bonus points, but check the bank’s website for details and conditions.

“The offers we’re seeing from

banks today seem even more generous than they were preCovid,” says Chris Chamberlin, from Point Hacks.

“Previously, it was rare for a bank to offer 100,000 frequent flyer points – or even more – on a new credit card, but now it’s exceedingly common.”

The thing with sign-up offers to new customers, though, is that you need to grab them when they become available.

“It’s common for banks to alternate between a really generous deal and then a not-so-generous offer,” says Chamberlin.

2. Make everyday expenses work twice as hard If you have the discipline to pay it off in full each month, consider signing up for a new credit card that allows you to earn the sign-up bonus points and use it for your everyday expenses.

This means you get the points without the penalty of extra interest payments.

While it’s tempting to get reward points from big-ticket items such as mortgages

and other loans, bear in mind that those products could cost you more than what the points are worth.

Do your homework or stick to a points-earning card for household expenses only.

3. Not all points are equal Earning frequent flyer points is often a two-step process.

On many credit cards, shoppers earn “points” in their bank’s loyalty program first before those are converted into frequent flyer points.

Typical conversion rates are 2:1 or 3:1, though ideally you’d want a 1:1 conversion.

But if this is not possible,

make sure you check if the conversion rate of your preferred card is 2:1, not 3:1.

“Of course, bank loyalty points can be spent on a wide variety of products and experiences – transferring them into a frequent flyer program is merely one option,” says Chamberlin.

“But even with the conversion rates at play, turning your credit card points into frequent flyer points is still usually the most rewarding choice.”

Introduced in 2018, the online payment feature allows banking customers to use their mobile, email or ABN instead of the usual BSB and account number.

One in four PayID users were

able to avoid sending money to the wrong person by stopping or editing the payment before it went out, research from the New Payments Platform (NPP) has found.

Unlike the situation with regular online payments, users are presented with a review screen featuring the recipient’s PayID

information, meaning that the payment can be cross-checked before it’s sent.

“We’ve always believed that PayID can play an important role in protecting customers against fraud and mistaken payments, so we were pleased to see that PayID’s payee confirmation step has been

PayID is just one of the digital payment options providing additional protection, though.

As Andrew Morrison, the chief product and growth officer at Ubank, explains, digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay

5. Higher score for flexibility If you’re after the most generous reward program, look at American Express Membership Rewards.

Eligible cardholders can transfer their points to up to 10 frequent flyer programs and two hotel loyalty programs from a single card.

“This is great because you don’t need to choose which frequent flyer program to earn points with until you’re ready to book a flight,” says Chamberlin.

If you prefer to go with a big bank, there are reward programs that also offer a good degree of flexibility, including ANZ Rewards, CBA Awards, Citi Rewards, NAB Rewards and Westpac Altitude Rewards.

Banks have different cards for individuals and businesses.

Black-tier credit cards offer the most generous rewards while Platinum-tier cards generally strike a balance between rewards and fees.

Chamberlin says bank-operated loyalty programs offer gift cards or discounts on goods in exchange for points, but if you’re planning a trip, you’ll save even more by using your points to book a flight.

Avoca event raises $40,000 for women in Africa More than $40,000 has been raised for the Barbara May Foundation at a fundraiser held at the Avoca Beach Surf Club on September 17 where Dr Andrew Browning was guest speaker.

Obstetric missionary surgeon Browning and retired ophthalmologist turned MC, Dr Phil Hayes, teamed up for the fundraiser.

Browning, who has just returned from operating in Nepal, said the fundraiser, attended by 175 people, raised enough money to treat 160 women in Africa.

“This was a really timely fundraiser because the inaugural Central Coast fundraiser for the Barbara May Foundation was held in 2019

but there have been none since due to the COVID outbreak,” Browning said.

“Right around the developing world, and none more so than in Africa, the need is greater than ever to cure isolating and debilitating fistula in women who do not have access to doctors who can conduct caesarean section.

“Increasingly, we are trying to stop fistula developing in the first place so the money raised is enough to provide antenatal checks, delivery (including a caesarean if needed) and then postnatal checks for 160 women.

“By doing this, lives are saved in pregnancy and fistula injuries prevented.”

Browning, who spoke on his work in Africa and his book A Doctor inAfrica,said fundraisers

rely on volunteers and donors and he thanked all those who had contributed to the evening.

“For more than 20 years I have been privileged to operate, with the support of the Barbara May Foundation, on more than 7000 women living with obstetric fistulas in Africa and other places,” he said.

“Obstetric fistula come about after a long, obstructed labour that, without access to a hospital and a doctor who can perform a caesarean, can last up to 7-10 days leaving the mother delivering a stillborn child and with a hole in her bladder, caused by tissue death.

“This is unheard of in Australia but with more than two million women in Africa suffering with this debilitating and isolating condition it is quite common.

“The Barbara May Foundation provides fistula repair and prevention through good maternal healthcare at no cost – simply because people, just like those last Saturday, donate money to help operate our hospitals across Tanzania, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

“I lived and operated in Africa for 17 years and now travel from Copacabana to Africa four-five times a year to continue operating on the women.”

Remembrance walk for infant loss Choosing Hope is a walk of honour and remembrance along the lake foreshore at Long Jetty in support of families who have experienced the loss of their baby.

It has been organised by Bears of Hope Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support to also help raise funds for the non-profit organisation to continue its work.

Volunteer Event Co-ordinator, Trish Thomas, said the purpose was to create a space where bereaved families and their

community could come together with others who understood and recognised their experience, support them and honour the lives of the children they never got to know, in addition to raising money for the valuable work of Bears of Hope.

“Every day in Australia, six babies are stillborn, three babies die after birth and before their first birthday and a miscarriage will occur every 3.5 minutes,” she said.

Thomas said that funds raised from the Choosing Hope walk would help put their care packages in doctors’ surgeries and hospitals across the nation.

“It will also help make support services accessible, available and free for the individuals that so dearly need it, just like my family did,” she said.

Choosing Hope Central Coast will be on Saturday, October 15 from 1.30pm.

Participants will take a leisurely 3.7km walk from

Saltwater Reserve at Long Jetty along the Tuggerah Lake foreshore to Picnic Point at The Entrance where a special remembrance service will be held.

Central Coast Grammar students top maths competition Students from Central Coast Grammar have beaten 16,000 students from across NSW to top this year’s Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition, earning their school the competition’s Year 5 and Year 6 perpetual shields.

Jaydon Miao was the top Year 6 student and Brian Zhang and Kathy Li were equal first out of all Year 5 students.

Lohith Pathala received the equal third-highest score of Year 6 students.

The Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition is the largest and longest running competition of its kind in Australia.

Hundreds flock to youth careers expo Hundreds of young people flocked to Lake Haven Recreation Centre on September 15 to explore career, training and education opportunities at The Y NSW Employment Now Careers Expo.

More than 700 students from 15 schools visited the Expo over four busy hours.

“There was this general atmosphere of young people being engaged, constant movement and activity which brought real life to it,” Central Coast Youth Program Coordinator, Virginia Walshaw

said.

The total attendance figure was close to 1000 people – including more than 60 stallholders, adult attendees and volunteers.

“We hope we can have young people walk away with some amazing moments of connection, an opportunity to reflect on what their future might look like and hopefully they’ve had a bit of fun as well,” Y NSW Chief Executive Officer, Susannah Le Bron said.

“We had 30 young student volunteers from TAFE, from local high schools, young people who are currently employed in their first jobs took the day off to come join us,” Walshaw said.

“It was such a joyous atmosphere; I was stopped by people saying it was such a great event and many more will be back next year.”

Early start to beach season The beach season will begin early on the Central Coast this year, with the red and yellow flags to be placed in the sand on Thursday, September 22, at many beaches and an official flag raising ceremony to take place at 9am on Saturday, September 24, at Terrigal.

From September 22, 10 of the 15 Central Coast beaches will be patrolled, along with Grant McBride Baths, ensuring the safety of those who want to enjoy the beach on the National Day of Mourning to mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Beaches to open that day are Umina Beach, Ocean

Beach, Macmasters Beach, Avoca Beach, Terrigal Beach, Shelly Beach, Toowoon Bay, The Entrance Beach, The Entrance Tower Channel and Soldiers Beach.

On Friday, September 23, the remaining five beaches will be open.

These are Killcare Beach, Copacabana Beach, North Avoca Beach, Wamberal Beach, North Entrance Beach and Lakes Beach.

Council Unit Manager Leisure Beach Safety and Community Facilities, Phil Cantillon, said while many of our beaches will be supervised, everyone needs to be surf smart.

“It’s important for the community to know that when

“We remind all community members to be surf smart by swimming between the red

and yellow flags, and to stay informed with weather updates and any subsequent beach closures on Council’s Facebook page,” he said.

“Board riders are asked to keep outside the black and white flags on each side of the

red and yellow flags, as these indicate the surf craft exclusion zone.”

During the season, all 15 beaches and the Grant McBride Baths will be patrolled from 9am to 5pm with the season finishing on April 25.

During the busy Christmas holiday period, from December 19-January 29, 2023, all locations, including Budgewoi Beach, will be patrolled for an extra hour until 6pm.

Masks no longer mandatory on public transport Central Coast commuters no longer be required to wear masks on public transport.

The NSW Government has announced masks will no longer be mandatory on public transport from September 21, including taxis and rideshare services, in transport waiting areas and the indoor areas of

cruise terminals.

“This is a common-sense approach that brings the rules into line for people travelling on buses or trains with those for planes and airport terminals,” Premier Dominic Perrottet said.

NSW Health continues to recommend that people wear masks where they cannot physically distance from others, and in settings where

there are vulnerable people and those who are at high risk of severe illness.

Health Minister, Brad Hazzard, said masks still play a significant role in reducing the risk of transmission.

“Continuing to wear a mask in crowded areas will be particularly important for people who have underlying health conditions or who are

vulnerable to COVID-19 infection for other reasons,” he said.

“Wearing a mask in these settings will not only protect those around you but will also reduce your risk of infection.

Minister for Transport, Veterans and Western Sydney, David Elliott, said he welcomed the decision to bring the mask mandate for commuters in line

with arrangements in other states, domestic travel, venues and events.

“Everyone has demonstrated throughout this pandemic that they will do what is required to protect themselves and each other from COVID-19 and I have no doubt they will continue to do so,” Elliott said.

DOWN IN THE GARDEN: TIME TO GROW TOMATOES WITH CHERALYN DARCEY

Now is the time to get your summer tomato crops started by seed and some of the hardier or early tomatoes seedlings can certainly go into your garden now as well.

You will find that as with all plants, there is a greater variety of seeds than seedlings available and for those wanting to try heirloom and the weird and wonderful, your appetite will be rewarded by hunting down seeds.

Everyone needs a ‘Tommy Toe’.

They are a sweet cherry tomato on the larger size and are very easy to care for.

Newbies to tomato growing should try Mama’s Delight as it produces lovely salad fruits and is another easy-grow plant.

Looking for a tomato with a lower acidity? Then try ‘Yellow Mellow’.

Extend your tomato harvest by popping in the much favoured ‘Apollo’ for an early crop and a ‘Grosse Lisse’ for a mid to late cropping tomato that also has a heigh yield.

Those planning on planting into pots could try the yummy ‘Patio Roma’ or for a burst of colour, the tiny ‘Tumbler Yellow’, which can also be successfully grown in hanging baskets.

Heirlooms that add variety and interest include the colourful ‘Brandywine’, smoky flavoured ‘Black Russian’ and ‘Jaune Flamme’ is a wonderfully rich flavoured tomato that has a long cropping season.

For the tomato aficionados and foodies, you will adore the delightfully complex flavours of ‘Black Krim’.

Personally, I love growing the fascinating Reisetomate, also known as ‘Travellers Tomato’ for the first time.

This lumpy-looking tom can be snacked on by pulling off the bulbous sections, hence the name.

Top Tips for Tom Success All tomatoes need a warm, full sun position and while they are not super fussy about soil type, they will do best in a free-draining soil which is high in organic matter.

Tomatoes cannot be grown in the same spot each season as they are heavy feeders, especially of nitrogen and attract diseases that can live on in the soil and effect the next crop.

Rule of thumb is to rotate these positions every three years and an in-between crop that will help your soil is beans as they are nitrogen-fixing.

I have a ‘three stage’ method of raising tomatoes from seed to avoid early spring pest problems and to save space for late winter crops that may still be thriving.

Seed takes about 7 to 10 days to germinate and is best planted in a seed raising mix in trays.

Keep moist, but do not overwater as they are prone to root rot and place in a sunny, warm position.

Once germination occurs, move each viable seedling to its own small pot of 50% compost

and 50% good quality potting mix.

Add about ¼ teaspoon of sulphate potash and do not fertilise with any nitrogen based fertilise as these can make the plant focus too much on leaf production and not on flower and fruit production.

Once roots have filled the new pot, let the soil become lightly dry and then transplant into the garden.

Plant each 1 metre apart into position by covering the stem to just over the first two leaves as this will encourage deeper root growth.

Feed each plant with an organic fertiliser and water.

Provide support for each plant by either using a tomato cage or plant trellis or by surround with 3 to 4 wooden stakes.

These need to be at least 1.5m in length for most varieties and 2m is best.

Tomato stems break easily so as the plant grows, tie to stakes or trellis with a soft, flexible garden tie.

Something with a bit of give is best and old pantyhose is a brilliant eco solution.

Lastly, add mulch to the top of the soil as this will help retain nutrients and water and deter weeds and pests.

Snip off some of the lateral stems as the plant grows to increase air circulation.

Most tomatoes may be grown successfully in large containers if you are prepared to keep an even closer eye on your plants as they will need greater attention.

Tomatoes in containers will dry out very quickly and as they are heavy feeders, you will need to ensure that you use a top-quality potting mix and enrich the soil regularly with an all-round organic fertiliser.

Try compact tomato plants for the best results and ensure your pots are at least 40cm in height and in width for each plant.

Lastly, don’t forget that when watering to avoid splashing on the leaves as this can encourage disease and pests; space at least 1 metre apart for good air circulation; wash hands and tools with a disinfectant between working with each plant to avoid the spread of pests and disease and treat problems quickly.

The win sees the Razorbacks progress to the Grand Final at Central Coast Stadium next Saturday where they meet Terrigal in what should prove a gripping Grand Final.

In the Premier 2 Preliminary Final, Terrigal recorded a good win defeating Avoca Beach by 26 points to 10 while The Lakes won the President’s Cup Preliminary Final defeating Terrigal White by 26 points to 17.

The Women’s 10’s Preliminary Final saw Terrigal prove too strong for Hornsby, running out winners by 36 points to 14.

The Ourimbah Razorbacks defeat the Avoca Beach Sharks by 32 points to 24 at Woy Woy Oval on Saturday (17 Sep) to advance to the 2022 Grand Final.

In an enthralling match played in warm, gusty conditions, the opening ten minutes was a very even affair.

Avoca Beach had the advantage of the breeze in the first half and took full advantage, opening the scoring with a converted try after only 3 minutes.

However, the Razorbacks were quick to respond and scored their first try soon after to make the score 7-5.

Avoca Beach then established a territorial advantage for the remainder of the first half, crossing again in the 33rd minute to go into half time leading 14 points to 5.

The first ten minutes of the second half saw the Razorbacks regain the ascendency, scoring twice to take the lead 17 points to 14.

Avoca Beach replied with another try to snatch the lead back, before a Razorback penalty goal saw the match lead change once again, 20-19

In the final 15 minutes of the match, the Razorback posted two more to secure victory.

Danckert and Waters named rugby players of the year RUGBY Adam Danckert of Terrigal and Sharni Waters of Avoca Beach have been named Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year at the 2022 Central Coast Rugby Union awards.

As well as picking up the Syd Noble Medal as Player of the Year, Danckert was also named Highest Point Scorer, Rep Player of the Year and Referees Player of the Year.

Executive Officer of Central Coast Rugby Union, Kate Thomson, received the Terry Woodward Award for Services to Rugby in recognition of the huge amount of work she does for the code.

And the award named in her honour – the Kate Thomson Medal for Women’s Player of the Year – went to Sharni Waters of Avoca Beach.

Avoca Beach was also named Club of the Year, with Ryan

Hazel of Warnervale being named the Peter Armstrong Club Person of the Year.

Michael Farrelly and Jonathan Bell of Terrigal took out the Coach of the Year award, with Terrigal taking the Club Championship award.

Highest Point Scorer in the Women’s 10’s was Sian George of Terrigal and Aaron Crofts was named Referee of the Year.

Seniors Best Back of the Year was Jake Hubbard and Best Forward of the Year was Rob Peden.

Killarney Vale has taken out the grand final of the AFL Hunter Central Coast Black Diamond Men’s Cup, defeating Terrigal 11.5.71 to 8.10.58 at Adelaide St

Killarney Vale capitalised on the home ground advantage to seal the deal after finishing the season as Minor Premiers.

The game was the culmination of a full day of grand final action,

played over two venues, as the 2022 season came to a close.

In the Black Diamond Women’s Cup, Newcastle emerged victorious over Killarney Vale 3.6.24 to 3.3.21 while the Women’s Black

Diamond Plate resulted in a victory for Lake Macquarie 9.5.59 over Cardiff 5.8.38.

At Bateau Bay, Warners Bay took the Black Diamond Men’s Shield from Muswellbrook 8.12.60 to 7.4.46.

In the Black Diamond Men’s Plate, Nelsons Bay 9.5.59 was victorious over Newcastle City 5.8.38.

The weekend action followed a five-month season which saw game postponements and

cancellations due to torrential rains impact grounds all over the Central Coast earlier in the year.

Silver Salties up and running at Ocean Beach The Silver Salties program is up and running at Ocean Beach.

The Silver Salties meet twice a week at Ocean Beach

A spokesperson said Silver Salties is all about having fun, fitness, and friendship for older Australians.

“It’s a participation program for older Australians aged 65+ promoting physical activity, social connections, and involvement in the surf lifesaving community,” the spokesperson said.

Managed by Surf Life Saving Australia, coordinated by State

Centres and delivered by participating surf lifesaving clubs, the program includes popular active recreational pursuits, as well as traditional surf lifesaving activities.

“Ocean Beach SLSC began its first program Walk with us @ Ocean Beach in early September,” the spokesperson said.

“Our group meets at 8am two days a week.

“We enjoy walking along The Esplanade or on the beach.

“Each walk we have a topic of

conversation with a fun quiz over coffee afterwards.”

6S Physio supports the program by providing guidance on stretching, mobilisation and balance exercises pre walk.

The warmer weather will see the start of some water-based activities.
