Lawrie McKinna to stand as an independent for Robertson osford mayor L a w r i e McKinna and former international test cricketer Nathan Bracken will run as Independents in the marginal seats of Robertson and Dobell in the September 7 federal election.

Mr McKinna will contest the seat of Robertson while Mr Bracken will be running for the seat of Dobell.

Both Lawrie and Nathan said they believed the Central Coast has been overlooked by Labor and the Coalition for far too long.

They said they would seek to draw attention and action to the neglected needs of the people of the Central Coast.

Mr McKinna is currently the mayor of Gosford and has been closely aligned with the Central Coast for the past nine years as coach and ambassador of A-League Premiers Central Coast Mariners.

Former International test cricketer Bracken has been a resident of the Coast for nine years and currently lives at Hamlyn Terrace with his wife and five-year-old son.

Lawrie and Nathan said they believe that neither major party has shown any significant support to

the region in the past, and Team Central Coast would be giving Labor and the Coalition an opportunity to make a solid commitment to the people of the Central Coast.

“This is a greater risk for Lawrie and Nathan than for me.

It is believed that at about 5am, two shots were fired

from a car towards a house on Schnapper Rd, striking a garage door.

An undetonated improvised explosive device was also located near a car parked on the driveway of the property.

The occupants of the home were not injured in the incident.

Police were contacted, with

officers from Brisbane Water Local Area Command and the Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Squad attending the scene.

The explosive device was rendered safe, before being seized for forensic examination.

Detectives are continuing their investigations into the matter

and are attempting to establish a motive for the incident.

They have been told a small light-coloured vehicle was seen driving along Flounder Rd at excessive speed without its headlights on, moments after the shooting.

Police are now appealing for anyone who may have seen the

vehicle or has information about the shooting to come forward.

Anyone with information about this incident should call Gosford Detectives via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

osford Council has entered into a three year partnership with the Central Coast Mariners Football Club and will provide $120,000 in sponsorship each year to the club as part of the agreement.

“This is a huge camp with many countries attending and the top 40 American students,” said Jayden’s mum Stacey.

In January this year Jayden was a member of the NSW Waratahs U18 Country Basketball team that won the Australian Country Basketball Cup at Albury.

From this tournament he was selected as captain of the NSW Country team to

compete at the Australian U18 championships in Queensland in April.

“Jayden is classed as bottom age and is still eligible to play in the same age group next year,” said Ms Hodgson.

“He is the only student from his school ever to make NSW Combined Open basketball team which won the All School State Championships.

“Jayden has another two years at making this team again as it is an open team with students up to and including Year 12.”

As a result of Jayden’s performance in last year’s U16 Nationals he was selected in a 20 man Australian squad to train for the World U17 Basketball Championships in 2014.

The squad has had three camps at the Australian

Institute of Sport (AIS) where players have been dropped and others added.

“He has just received notice that he is invited back to the AIS in August as part of the final 16 man squad,” said Ms Hodgson.

A team of 10 will be picked from this camp to play in the Oceania Series against New Zealand in Melbourne where the winning country will represent Oceania in the 2014 U17 World Basketball Championships in Dubai in June next year.

Jayden has also been part of an Australian squad that attended the Asia Nike Basketball camp in China.

“Jayden is working so very hard to hold his position in these squads and teams as your performance is regularly tested,” said Ms Hodgson.

The partnership agreement aims to provide Gosford City exposure at a national and international level and focuses on a range of community benefits including youth, recreational and sporting development opportunities, increased tourism and visitor attraction to the region.

Council sponsored the Central Coast Mariners between 2008 and 2011 in conjunction with Wyong Council, Business Central

Coast and the Department of State and Regional Development for a total of approximately $440,000.

Council concluded its sponsorship of the club following the 2010-2011 season.

While the joint sponsorship of the Mariners was successful, Council had resolved to investigate opportunities to sponsor other regional activities, projects and joint ventures in the marketing of Gosford City.

The Central Coast Mariners have built a reputation as the most consistent team in the national competition’s history, as four time grand finalists, two time premiers and 2013 Hyundai A-League Champions.

he Mars Food Australia Gosford New Year’s Eve Festival has been selected as a finalist in the Festivals and Events category of the 2013 Qantaslink Hunter and Central Coast Awards for Excellence in Tourism.

“The Mars Food Australia Gosford New Year’s Eve Festival is an exciting action packed annual event, held on December 31 each year on the Gosford Waterfront,” said Gosford Business Improvement District (GBID) manager Mr Paul Brasch.

The playground caters for children aged between two and 12 years and features a 25 metre long double flying fox, a 7.4 metre high net climbing structure, explorative dinosaur skeleton, regular play equipment such as swings, slide and spring toys, large shelter, bike racks and seating for the adults.

“The contribution they have each made to this project has been of the highest calibre and I would like to thank them for their participation and involvement in what shapes to be a significant development for the Woy Woy community,” said mayor Cr McKinna.

Gosford Council general manager Mr Paul Anderson said that the masterplan aimed to provide the necessary infrastructure to allow Woy Woy to host regional sporting events.

“The facility will have an attendance capacity of 10,000 featuring a 600 seat grandstand, change rooms, kiosk, media box and club house.

“The masterplan also focuses on the integration of Woy Woy Oval with the CBD to create a vibrant and accessible community hub.

“We are also exploring options to transform the Oval Ave car park into a boulevard space to accommodate community gatherings, such as local markets and special events,” said Mr Anderson.

Mayor Cr McKinna said that the project in its entirety would cost $8 to $9 million.

Application fees waived osford Council has agreed to waive a total of $14,819 in development application fees for four infrastructure improvement projects.

A total of $3,631 will be waived for James Mitchell Child Care Centre in Wyoming, $3,211 for Saratoga Community Hall, $4,346 for Point Clare Community Hall and $3,631 for Niagara Park Children’s Centre.

The projects were

approved by Council under the Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme along with 15 other infrastructure improvement projects, however, the four listed were the only projects requiring development applications.

Another 4,000 homes have access to NBN n additional 4,000 homes and businesses in Point Frederick, East Gosford, West Gosford and Springfield were officially switched on to the NBN’s fibre network on Tuesday, August 6.

new funding that would provide small-to-medium businesses in Gosford free expert advice on how to make the most of the NBN. Regional Development Australia Central Coast will receive $279,752 to deliver training services as part of Rudd Labor Government’s Digital Enterprise program, working with local businesses to raise awareness of the many benefits of high-speed

broadband. “The NBN will mean small businesses here on the Central Coast are able to access the same superfast, reliable fibre-optic broadband infrastructure that businesses in the CBDs of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane can access,� Ms Bird said.

outhconnections.com.au recently held its first NSW Aboriginal Financial Counsellors Network Forum at its Green Central site in Kariong.

Green Central welcomed representatives from a number of cities including Penrith, Newcastle, Campbelltown and the Central Coast to participate in the event facilitated by the youthconnections.com. au Koori Connect unit.

The forum allowed a range of Aboriginal workers to collaborate on financial issues affecting communities and to build social networks to further their work and research.

Aboriginal Financial Counsellors from remote and rural areas were also able to contribute to the

discussion via telephone conferencing.

The NSW Aboriginal Financial Counsellor Network Forum hosted mentors Betty Weule and Graham Smith who each offered advice, knowledge and guidance to members on the day, helping to create interactive discussion within the forum.

NSW Aboriginal Financial Counsellors Network chairman Bobbi Murray said the forum was the answer to a call that had been unheard for a long time coming.

“Aboriginal Financial Counsellors are isolated in

their communities; they are in demand and are also in low numbers.

“We are underrepresented in this industry.

“This network will support and resource the Aboriginal workers in this field.

“The network will become the advisory network to the State Association and for anyone seeking advice on Aboriginal engagement, protocols, respect and financial community education,” said Murray.

Energy Minister and Minister for the Central Coast Mr Chris Hartcher said local councils across Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter would become the first in Australia to be part of a grid-wide rollout of the energy saving technology.

“The lifespan of LEDs is expected to be more than 20 years, meaning councils will pay a lot less for both maintenance and power,” Mr Hartcher said.

“Most streetlights in residential areas use between 46 and 95 watts and require regular globe replacements, whereas the LEDs to be installed use as little as 29 watts.

“When a standard light on a suburban street fails and cannot be fixed, it will now be replaced with a super-efficient LED.” State-owned electricity distributor Ausgrid owns and maintains 250,000 streetlights on behalf of the 41 councils.

Over the past 18 months Ausgrid conducted a trial of LED streetlights, installing 62 lights in eight locations across Sydney and the Central Coast.

Member for Wyong Mr Darren Webber said Irene Pde in Noraville, one of the locations to trial the LEDs, recorded the most efficient results.

“During the trial the LEDs installed on Irene Pde used 174 watts compared to the old streetlights which used almost 575 watts over the same period, that’s a 70% energy saving,” Mr Webber said.

“Other results from the trial show short term maintenance of the streetlights is minimal and that residents prefer the light output of LEDs. “The savings and efficiency benefits of these LED lamp heads are twofold.

“Firstly, up to 70% energy reduction and secondly, longer life expectancy.

“The completion of the trial and beginning of wider rollout is the most significant practical measure to benefit the environment since the Howard Government phasing out of incandescent light globes with compact florescent

“The positive outcomes are far more reaching than the failed carbon tax.”

Mr Hartcher said the LEDs supplied to councils would be assembled and supplied by the Central Coast based company Sylvania Lighting.

“Public lighting is an essential service for the community that helps make our roads and public areas safer for pedestrians and motorists,” Mr Hartcher said.

“It’s great to see a local company at the forefront of this technology, helping to make a vital community service more efficient and cost effective.

“Based on Ausgrid’s predictions, Sylvania Lighting will be supplying about 10,000 LEDs a year.

“Using LEDs as the standard replacement for streetlights is the first step towards employing this technology on a large scale.”

Kincumber Creek and foreshore clean up group of 37 community volunteers and MacMasters Beach Surf Club Duke of Edinburgh members cleaned up Kincumber Creek and South Kincumber Foreshore on Sunday, August 4, as part of Gosford Council’s Brisbane Water Foreshore Program.

The group began at the boat ramp behind Kincumber Indoor Centre with two oyster barges, two IRBs and seven kayaks.

The Macmasters Surf Club members completed the clean-up of both foreshores of Kincumber Creek and collected lounges, TVs, tyres,

mattresses, timber, a computer desk and chair.

Ten bags of small litter were also removed from this area.

The clean-up of the South Kincumber foreshore saw the collection of oyster trays, tyres, large domestic items including a steel balustrade railing, large

amounts of plastic and tennis balls.

Approximately two tonnes of rubbish was deposited adjacent to the boat ramp for Council to remove.

“I’d like to bring to the forefront that through previous rounds of RDAF funding has delivered the Central Coast citizens with very real funds and projects; projects, which were nominated by organisations on the Central Coast,� said Mr Abrahams. “Being a federal government program these rounds of funding involve a nationally competitive process and not all proponents received infrastructure funds. “After nomination by the RDACC the process of selection is thorough and is taken by an independent selection committee in Canberra,� said Mr Abrahams. “For the record, through previous RDAF rounds we have received $890,000 in

round one and $2.5 million in round two,� Mr Abrahams said. “Additionally, both Wyong and Gosford Councils are receiving earmarked infrastructure funding of $1.4 million collectively.�

RDACC is currently presenting three significant projects in the last round of RDAFbeing the Gosford KibblePlex project, Wyong Regional Arts Hub and the Darkunjung and Co Youth Development Centre at San Remo.

The RDAF funds are only some of the investment funds that the RDACC have assisted in gaining for the region from federal, state and local government, in conjunction with private and

NGO partnerships.

Additional investments have been in tourism, arts, innovation, employment training, workplace flexibility, education, business excellence, regional migration and major telecommunications investments. “All of these high quality projects, those currently underway and those for consideration, show a great deal of enterprise and offer long term business and employment opportunities for residents of this innovative region,� Mr Abrahams said.

Meet the Candidates at Gosford Uniting Church Meet the Candidates forum was held on Monday, July 29, at Gosford Uniting Church which saw 170 people listen to the views of four local candidates from Robertson and Dobell.

The Robertson candidates comprised Kate da Costa (Greens), Lucy Wicks (Liberal) and Deborah O’Neill (Labor), while the one Dobell candidate was Sue Wynn (Greens).

Liberal candidate Karen McNamara sent an apology due to a prior commitment, and the Labor candidate remains uncertain.

“The meeting was chaired by the Minister of the Gosford Uniting Church Rev. Greg Woolnough who guided the meeting with skill and wit resulting in a very happy and acceptable exchange of ideas,” said Forum Promotions Committee representative Mr Robert Grant.

Senator Madigan laid out the DLP policy by first saying that collectively, small business is one of the greatest employers and greatest contributors to commonwealth and state revenue.

“We should be aware that in the House of Representatives and the Senate there are only 19 members who have had any experience of operating a small business and government members recently appointed to oversee small business development have no such experience whatsoever.

“In short the DLP Small Business Policy is in stopping big businesses’ and government’s unfair practice of lengthy delays on payments for goods and services provided by small

business by introducing a maximum of 30 days standard trade for such payments; deferring small business company tax for one year for the first seven years followed by a generous catch up period; having superannuation and work cover costs covered by federal government for the first year of a small business employing its first full time employee, covering a wage of up to $48,000 per annum; establishing local small business mentoring programs compromised of both retired and current small business owners; opposing undue and excessive federal and state government and local council bureaucracy for small business operators.

“And finally, another cornerstone of our small

business policy is that federal, state and local government do not introduce more and more bureaucracy that is a millstone around the neck of small business which is a disincentive to employ people in the community when people do not have a job.

“What is needed is a good sense of self-worth gained from employment.

“We have more domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse, vandalism and mental health problems and presently our biggest increasing section in the community, our biggest and newest industry, so to speak, is Centrelink.

“While I’m all for helping people and having proper social services, the greatest thing we can do for people

is to offer the dignity of meaningful work where people have a job, they are more engaged within their local community, they feel better about themselves, they can work towards buying a home, to feeding the family and it’s a win-win for everybody.”

GP Super Clinic open entral Coast residents can now enjoy expanded access to doctors, nurses and other health professionals with the opening of the South Central Coast GP Super Clinic in West Gosford.

Welcoming the opening of the 11th GP Super Clinic in NSW, Minister for Health Ms Tanya Plibersek said the new facility would make it easier for people in the area to see a health professional.

“GP Super Clinics are just one way Labor is building a strong and responsive system that delivers to Australians the health care they need, when they need it and where they need it,” she said.

“They bring together a variety of health professionals to work as a team to provide patients with the best possible overall care.”

The Labor Government contributed $7 million to the South Central Coast GP Super Clinic.

Joining the Minister at the opening, Member for Robertson Ms Deborah O’Neill, said the Clinic was the significant investment Federal Labor has made

since coming to office.

“The Gosford GP Super Clinic, alongside the $19.5 million Federal Labor provided to the redevelopment of the Woy Woy Hospital rehab unit, will mean great things for everyone living on the Central Coast,” she said.

The clinic will provide health services to the local community with a focus on preventive activities including lifestyle modification and chronic disease management programs.

Services include a full range of general practice services; practice nursing; allied health professionals (physiotherapy, dietetics, podiatry, psychology, speech pathology, audiology, exercise physiology, diabetes), pathology, pharmacy and radiology services.

Other services include inhome health assessments,

vaccination clinics, skin cancer clinics, adult and child health checks, and a range of services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Reliance Medical Practice also offers bulk billing for GP services.

The South Central Coast GP Super Clinic will play a role in the education and training of medical, nursing and allied health students to support the future health workforce in the community by attracting and retaining quality health professionals.

The purpose-built Clinic will provide trainee consulting rooms, a large meeting room with audiovisual equipment and a medical library for all students.

Dry July raises money for cancer services entral Coast Local Health District has raised more than $122,000 for local cancer services during its Dry July campaign.

Central Coast Local Health District’s chief executive Mr Matt Hanrahan said this year was the first time cancer services at Gosford and Wyong hospitals had been

beneficiaries of Dry July and the community had supported the cause right from the start.

“From the outset, people got behind us either by joining up or supporting

someone who did,” Mr Hanrahan said.

“We are grateful to the 560 people who signed up and took the challenge of no alcohol for a month and to all the people who

sponsored them.

“We are fortunate to be part of such a generous community that has shown themselves to be so willing to support our health services.

“I offer my sincere thanks to all those who have been involved in Dry July and supported Central Coast Local Health District’s CoastCanCare program.

yong Council is planning to create a vibrant education, industry and business precinct at Warnervale, capable of providing university-level courses to 7,000 students and 1,500 education sector jobs.

yong Council has recommended the Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) approve a $16.8 million application for a new Ausgrid works depot to be constructed at Ourimbah.

Council is unable to completely sign off on the development because the value is more than $5 million, which means the JRPP will ultimately determine the application.

Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton said the development would serve as Ausgrid’s base for the entire Central Coast.

“The development will

be home to 288 full time staff and be in operation seven days a week, and 24 hours a day during times of emergency such as a natural disaster,” Cr Eaton said.

The site covers 3.9 hectares and is on the corner of Ourimbah Creek Rd and the Pacific Highway, on the F3 side.

both the Pacific Highway and Ourimbah Creek Rd. The application describes the proposed development as a regional works depot, comprising a total floor area of more than 8,300 square metres.

There are four main buildings proposed including an administration facility with a conference

room, service facilities including showers and lockers for field staff, a vehicle servicing area with a wash bay, warehousing and storage and a recycling and waste collection facility.

Car parking spaces have been provided for 188 general spots and 215 service vehicle spots.

The administration building will be located on the most prominent area of the site, at the front of Ourimbah

Creek Rd and the Pacific Highway, while the site will be secured by a three metre fence.

“The 288 jobs will be broken down into 74 office staff and the rest being field staff,” Cr Eaton said.

“This again proves that council is working hard to attract this type of job creating investment to the Shire.

“To have the regional base for Ausgrid located at Ourimbah is fantastic

news for the Shire, and for employees and job seekers.

“Council has overwhelmingly supported this development and recommended it for approval by the JRPP. “We will continue to work hard to create jobs for our residents, and bring this type of million dollar investment into the Shire.”

The initiative has taken its first step towards becoming reality, with council endorsing a Preliminary Project Plan which will develop a masterplan for the Council-owned land at Warnervale.

“This is a unique opportunity for council and the community,” Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton said.

Cr Eaton also said the initiative would benefit the young people of the Central Coast and create a huge boost for local employment and business.

According to Cr Greg Best, the initiative would particularly benefit those who have to leave the Central Coast because their chosen disciplines of tertiary study are not available in the region.

“We are not going to be an exporter of commuters,” Cr Best said.

“One day, we are going to be an importer of employers.”

Council has drawn on

successful international education-focused development, such as Education City in SouthEast Queensland and the Education City in Qatar, and envisions creating a regionally significant integrated development.

the development would include a university campus for 7,000 students with an emphasis on science, engineering and technology based studies, a residential college for 1,500 students and retail, sport and recreation and language facilities for

students.

It would also see the co-alignment of education with training providers and businessindustry groups, as well as the establishment of a business/industrial park which would integrate with the university campus and explore linkages for employment generation and research and development.

It is envisaged the development would employ 1,500 staff plus support services and retail providers.

On a recent delegation to China, Cr Eaton visited the largest university city in the world in Wuhan, home to multiple university campuses and a total student population of over one million.

“It was incredible to

see how this satellite city is thriving with the energy of all those students and how this flows on to stimulate the local economy,” Cr Eaton said.

“The spin offs extend to the tourism sector, with increased visits from the families of students and prospective students and university-based events.”

The initial driver for investment in the proposed Warnervale precinct will focus on securing a university to anchor the development and attract complementary service providers and businesses.

“On this front, we are already looking good with council having already received an expression of interest from a reputable international investor, which I think demonstrates that this is a viable project,” Cr Eaton said.

“I’m very optimistic that we have the right conditions to transform higher education on the Central Coast.”

An economic feasibility study will be completed by September 2013.

$120 million funding deal for the upgrade of Wyong Rd has been secured.

The deal was made between Member for The Entrance Mr Chris Spence, Member for Wyong Mr Darren Webber, NSW Treasurer Mr Mike Baird and Minister for Roads Mr Duncan Gay. “During the election campaign, we gave a commitment of $8 million to deliver interval lights at the roundabouts

at Pacific Highway, Enterprise Dr, Mingara Dr and Tumbi Umbi,” Mr Spence said.

“Following the election, through discussions with the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), it became clear we would need much more than this stop-gap solution and instead needed to completely remove all

four roundabouts.

“Darren Webber and I are immensely pleased with the great news from the NSW Treasurer that the figure of over $120 million needed to completely overhaul these intersections on Wyong Rd will be delivered.

“This year, $4 million was allocated in the budget for the Pacific

Highway intersection and we’re another step closer to getting underway with the environmental planning approval in place and the submissions report published,” said Mr Spence.

Mr Webber said: “Some of the most common issues raised in submissions included impacts to properties, landscaping and urban design, pedestrian and cycle facilities, noise and vibration and potential overshadowing of

properties near the new intersection.”

“As a result, the RMS has now made modifications to their design.”

A further $1.6 million allocated this year will see further progress planning for Enterprise Dr, Mingara Dr and Tumbi Umbi underway.

“It is likely that construction on the intersections at Mingara Dr and Tumbi Umbi will be undertaken as combined works, with

the tools and support to cope with the diagnosis and treatment, which can take a toll on a person’s emotional wellbeing.”

“This was an excellent opportunity to hear Dr Rod Wilson, who is currently the Head of Regent College in Canada, and attend a number of workshops, some of which were conducted by the very talented staff of Green Point Christian College,” said Ms Walls.

“The conference was all about challenging Christian schools to ‘be the change’.

“We are called, said Rod Wilson, to live out the

beliefs and concepts of the gospel message not just articulate them.

“As a staff we must be exemplars of what God has done for us in Christ, focusing on modelling and discipleship rather than simply the transfer of knowledge.

Kincumber and Umina men arrested for supply of illicit drugs

T

wo men have been charged after simultaneous search warrants were executed on Wednesday, August 7, as part of an on-going police operation on the Central Coast.

Investigators from Brisbane Water Local Area Command established Operation Hulk five months ago to investigate the supply of illicit drugs.

About 8:15am, police executed search warrants at a home in Kooronya Rd, Kincumber, as well as homes in Gallipoli and Winifred Aves, Umina Beach.

Cannabis leaf was allegedly located at the Kincumber house and a 53-year-old man was arrested.

A 21-year-old man was arrested at the home in Winifred Ave, where cannabis

and cash was seized during the search.

Cash and hydroponic equipment were allegedly found and seized from the home in Gallipoli Ave. This residence is occupied by an 80-year-old woman who was spoken to by police.

The men were taken to Gosford Police Station, where the 53-year-old was charged with supplying an indictable quantity of cannabis, 28 counts of supplying a

prohibited drug, two counts of driving while disqualified and one count of breaching bail.

He was refused bail and appeared before Gosford Local Court on Wednesday, August 7.

he Community Environment Networkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (CEN) Waterwatch program will hold a Community Tree Planting Event on World Environment Day, Wednesday, June 5, at Frost Reserve, Kincumber.

The Tree Planting Event involves people from the Kincumber community coming together and planting local native trees, shrubs and grasses along the southern edge of the reserve in a bid to improve the water quality in Kincumber Creek. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Riparian vegetation is a very effective conservation mechanism that protects waterways from high levels

of sediments and pollutants entering the creek via the stormwater runoff from within the catchment,â&#x20AC;? said CEN Waterwatch coordinator Ms Samantha Willis. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kincumber Creek is an urban creek, a tributary of Brisbane Water, which is mostly bordered by urban and industrial developments. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Poor landuse

management within the Kincumber area can have a large impact on the water quality of the creek,â&#x20AC;? she said.

The planting event is open to all ages and will run from 10am to 12pm with a free morning tea and lunch provided on the day.

The event will feature workshop tours, pottery demonstrations, a Play with Clay workshop, opening of the pit kiln, a raffle and sausage sizzle.

The Central Coast Potters Society is a nonprofit organisation that

aims to increase the knowledge, experience and skills of members and students in the craft of pottery, and to promote a greater appreciation and understanding of pottery by the general public.

Springfield actor to take on Shakespeare pringfield actor Mr Craig Annis will appear as Gratiano and the Prince of Aragon in the Sydney Shakespeare Companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s The Merchant of Venice production.

The production began on Wednesday, August 7, at the Tap Gallery in Darlinghurst and will run until Saturday, August 24.

After starting his career working with local theatre groups including Gosford Musical Society and Mad Cow Theatre Company, Craig graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2004 and since then has worked continuously as an actor, comedian and broadcaster.

For Melbourne Theatre Company, Craig has performed in The History Boys, The Glass Soldier, Don Juan In Soho and for MTC/Company B, The Man From Mukinupin.

For television Craig has

appeared on Blue Heelers, Newstopia, Satisfaction, Dead Gorgeous and was the face of Boost Juice Bars and Open Universities nationally.

For many years Craig also performed in the double act Stefan and Craig, whose radio show aired on Triple M and their television series Stefan and Craig: Slightly Live was nominated for a Logie.

From 2010 to 2012, Craig hosted the SAFM breakfast show in Adelaide and, after a recent move back to the Central Coast, can be heard each morning on the Star 104.5 breakfast show, Craig and Mandy.

Craig is also a regular on the Sydney comedy scene

and September will see the debut of his new show Nannaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Boy in the Sydney Fringe Festival.

This is the second production for the Sydney Shakespeare Company, after its highly acclaimed 2011 debut, Othello.

Directed by artistic director Mr Steven Hopley, this production features Lizzie Schebesta as Portia and Mark Lee as Shylock.

The Merchant of Venice is a rich and complex comedy, exploring intolerance, vengeance, love and money â&#x20AC;&#x201C; how they intersect, and the ways in which they bind us.

Following on from last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success, the weekend will involve a variety of events including an Elvis Forever Show featuring â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Ultimate Elvisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; winner Damien Mullin, an Elvis movies night, and a chance for fans to enter the Elvis Idol Karaoke competition.

The festival will begin on

the Friday with a selection of Elvis movies being shown on the big screen throughout the night.

Saturday will showcase a free 2-hour musical tribute The Elvis Forever Show, starring Elvis act Damien Mullin, who has performed with the best 35 Elvis acts from around the world in a concert held at the Presley family home of Gracelands.

The show portrays Elvis during his prime years, incorporating the jumpsuits, big voice and confidently oozing charisma and charm that made Elvis Presley such a worldwide phenomenon.

Budding Elvis impersonators will also get the chance to enter the Elvis

Idol karaoke competition on Sunday.

With over 150 Elvis tunes to choose from, the winner of the competition will collect over $500 worth of prizes, as well as the honor of wearing the Central Coast Elvis Idol crown for the next 12 months.

The judging panel will include last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winner Wayne Cooper from Newcastle, who will be performing a few Elvis hits.

There will also be prizes for the Best Female Elvis and Best Junior Elvis.

The tour, set to take place over the east coast of Australia between August and September, follows the release of Evans’ fourth album Familiar Stranger.

Bob Evans is the alter ego of Kevin Mitchell, who has carved a career for himself as a solo artist that has become just as successful as his long standing career fronting alternative rock band, Jebediah.

Green Point lose at All Schools League Carnival

T

he Central Coast Adventist School junior boys’ and junior girls’ touch football teams competed at the Central Coast Regional Touch Football Championships at Adcock Park on July 30.

Undefeated in their round games, the boy’s football team lost in the semi-final game against a strong opponent.

The team still managed

to place third overall for the Central Coast.

The girls’ football team did not qualify for the semi-finals, despite playing a number of impressive

games in the round games.

Overall, they placed sixth out of a possible 18.

Despite the 12-6 loss, the team will play again at the next All Schools Carnival in August as the ‘wildcard’ entry.

he Central Coast Rugby Union Round 17 Match of the Day saw Avoca Beach secure a comfortable win over Gosford at Gosford Showground on Saturday, August 10.

In a match that never rose to any great heights, Avoca Beach had a handy lead at the halftime break and continued on to record the win.

The win secures Avoca Beach the Minor Premiership for 2013.

In a match where both sides had several players out or rested, the two teams realised they held the top two spots on the competition ladder and appeared to keep things well in hand for much of the match.

However it was still quite a physical encounter with some bruising defence on display by both teams.

Gosford opened the scoring early on with a penalty goal, however this penalty goal and the resultant 3-nil lead were to be their final points of the match.

Avoca Beach quickly hit back with a penalty goal and the score line of 3-all remained the score until the 20th minute mark of the first.

However a try to Avoca

Beach at the midway point of the half and then another just on the half time whistle saw Avoca Beach jump to a very handy 20-3 lead at the break.

The visitors were in control on the scoreboard.

Best players for Avoca Beach were lock Peter Steele, centre Dave Gee and halfback Julian Bacigalupo.

Bacigalupo had a very good match and was able to cross for two personal tries.

Gosford had several good performers but the best were back Dave Von Kotze and flanker Andrew Moseley.

The second half was a far more even affair with play going from one end of the field to the other but with neither team able to score points.

Gosford had chances to tighten the score but it was not to be.

It was not until the 30th minute of the second half that the first points were scored in this period and a try to Avoca Beach and a follow-up penalty goal, saw Avoca Beach home with a

30-3 victory.

These two teams will meet in the Major Semi-final on September 7.

Terrigal kept their slight chances alive of a finals berth with a huge win over Woy Woy at The Haven Oval running out winners by 97-7. Woy Woy scored the opening try, but after their initial glory it was all the home side.

Terrigal ran in a total of 15 tries in what was their biggest win of the season.

Best for Terrigal were lock Sam Kenny, winger Braeden Clack and prop Nick Bamford.

It was Woy Woy’s last match for the season and they will start looking towards next season to turn things around in 2014.

Terrigal meet Ourimbah in round 18 but are at long odds to make the Finals.

Northlakes and Kariong shared the lower grades at one win apiece in their clashes at Kariong Oval.

New floodlights osford Council has agreed to the lodgement of development and construction certificate applications for new sports ground floodlighting at Saratoga Oval.

All council fees associated with DA and Certificate totalling $3,232 for the installation of new floodlight towers,

luminaires and associated infrastructure will be waived.

The new floodlights will facilitate mid-week training sessions for the Saratoga

he wily Wamberal Bowling Club duo of Dale Kalms (lead) and skip Allan Olsen needed all of their skill and guile to win the 2013 Bowls Central Coast Veterans Pairs Championship at Everglades Country Club on Thursday, July 25.

In the four years that this event has been run, this was the first win by a Wamberal team.

Kalms and Olsen won 19-12 against the local Everglades team of Merv Sampson (lead) and his skip Col Nicholls.

Although the locals were building good heads and

holding shot, the Wamberal skip managed to convert on enough occasions to keep his team in the lead and pulling away on the scoreboard, despite Everglades bagging four shots on end sixteen.

With Wamberal leading 19-12 on end 17 it was decided to call it a day

and retire to the club house for the Presentation Ceremony and the excellent sandwiches provided by the Everglades club.

ormer Ourimbah Juniors’ player Adam AshleyCooper was part of the Qantas Wallabies Rugby Union team defeated by HSBC British and Irish Lions in the DHL Australia 2013 Lions Tour test series match at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday, June 22.

The Wallabies were defeated 23-21 in front of a new ground record crowd of 52,499.

The Wallabies would have won the match had they not missed four kicks at goal, two of which were in

the last ten minutes.

The match was lit up by two of the best solo tries in recent memory, to George North for the Lions and Israel Folau for the Wallabies (twice), who scored individual tries as the Lions held on for the nail-biting victory, after the Wallabies were severely disrupted by four injuries to key backline players.

Ashley-Cooper was replaced with four minutes to go by reserve scrumhalf Nick Phipps.

The teams now move on to Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, June 29, for what is sure to be a thrilling second test of the three.

Rogic features in win over Iraq Football Federation Australia

ormer Central Coast Mariners’ player Tom Rogic was called on as a substitute in the 60th minute of the Socceroos’ match against Iraq on Tuesday, June 18.

The match was the final qualification match for Australia’s group with the top two earning direct qualification to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Rogic troubled the Iraqi defence before Josh Kennedy scored the winning goal in the 1-0 victory.

Needing a win to assure a spot at a third straight World Cup, the Socceroos looked like blowing their chance

as the stubborn visitors held firm for more than 82 minutes.

But in his first Socceroos appearance in 19 months, Kennedy came off the bench to nod home Mark Bresciano’s cross seven minutes from time to send the crowd of 80,532 into delirium.

Australia boss Holger Osieck received a few boos from the home fans when he opted to substitute favourite son Tim Cahill for Kennedy just a few minutes earlier.

But the decision proved a masterstroke as Kennedy did what he does best, giving Iraq ‘keeper Noor Sabri no chance with a wellplaced header from just six

yards out.

The nail-biting victory meant the Socceroos finished second in their group behind Japan and avoided going into the lottery of the play-offs later this year.

Knowing a win over the inexperienced Iraqi’s would ensure Australia’s berth for a third straight World Cup, there was a sense of excited anticipation amongst the fans before kick-off.

Searching for ways to unlock the stubborn Iraqi defence, Holger Osieck introduced young star Tom Rogic on the hour and the Celtic midfielder immediately lifted the tempo.

The Socceroos thought

they had the crucial breakthrough 25 minutes from time when a poor headed clearance landed perfectly for Kruse to volley home from just outside the box.

But celebrations soon turned to despair as Iranian referee Faghani Alireza had already blown for a foul by Ognenovski in the lead-up.

The close call only added to the tension, which soon turned to shock among the home fans as Cahill made way for Kennedy.

And the beanpole striker took just six minutes to make an impact, sending his header past Sabri to get celebrations underway.

antas Socceroos head coach Holger Osieck held a training camp in Gosford and Tuggerah from Monday, July 1, to Friday, July 5, which included Central Coast Mariners’ Joshua Rose, Mitchell Duke and Trent Sainsbury.

The training camp was part of the Qantas Socceroos preparation for the upcoming EAFF East Asian Cup 2013 in Seoul.

It was the first of three camps in Australia to be held in the lead up to the East Asian Cup. The Cup will take place in the Korean Republic from July 20 to 28.

At a reception held by Gosford Council, Minister for Sport Senator Don Farrell and Member for Robertson Ms Deborah O’Neill congratulated the players on their World Cup qualification.

“The next eighteen months represents a very exciting time for football in Australia,” said Mr Farrell.

“With Australia qualifying for its third successive World Cup, an outstanding achievement in itself, and

of 20 players selected to participate in the training camp, which was the last chance for players to impress head coach Holger Osieck before the final Socceroos squad for the EAFF East Asian Cup 2013 is named on Friday, July 12.

“This is a huge camp with many countries attending and the top 40 American students,” said Jayden’s mum Stacey.

In January this year Jayden was a member of the NSW Waratahs U18 Country Basketball team that won the Australian Country Basketball Cup at Albury.

From this tournament he was selected as captain of the NSW Country team to

compete at the Australian U18 championships in Queensland in April.

“Jayden is classed as bottom age and is still eligible to play in the same age group next year,” said Ms Hodgson.

“He is the only student from his school ever to make NSW Combined Open basketball team which won the All School State Championships.

“Jayden has another two years at making this team again as it is an open team with students up to and including Year 12.”

As a result of Jayden’s performance in last year’s U16 Nationals he was selected in a 20 man Australian squad to train for the World U17 Basketball Championships in 2014.

The squad has had three camps at the Australian

Institute of Sport (AIS) where players have been dropped and others added.

“He has just received notice that he is invited back to the AIS in August as part of the final 16 man squad,” said Ms Hodgson.

A team of 10 will be picked from this camp to play in the Oceania Series against New Zealand in Melbourne where the winning country will represent Oceania in the 2014 U17 World Basketball Championships in Dubai in June next year.

Jayden has also been part of an Australian squad that attended the Asia Nike Basketball camp in China.

“Jayden is working so very hard to hold his position in these squads and teams as your performance is regularly tested,” said Ms Hodgson.

The partnership agreement aims to provide Gosford City exposure at a national and international level and focuses on a range of community benefits including youth, recreational and sporting development opportunities, increased tourism and visitor attraction to the region.

Council sponsored the Central Coast Mariners between 2008 and 2011 in conjunction with Wyong Council, Business Central

Coast and the Department of State and Regional Development for a total of approximately $440,000.

Council concluded its sponsorship of the club following the 2010-2011 season.

While the joint sponsorship of the Mariners was successful, Council had resolved to investigate opportunities to sponsor other regional activities, projects and joint ventures in the marketing of Gosford City.

The Central Coast Mariners have built a reputation as the most consistent team in the national competition’s history, as four time grand finalists, two time premiers and 2013 Hyundai A-League Champions.

Following their success, the Central Coast Mariners reapproached Gosford

Council with the opportunity to become a sleeve sponsor for the next three seasons commencing this year.

The partnership will provide Gosford Council with exposure at a national level through the Hyundai A-League competition and at an international level through the Asian Champions League (ACL).

Four ACL games were held in Gosford against competing teams from March to May and drew crowds of up to 8,000 people, accompanied by large visiting delegations from overseas supporting their respective teams.

The funding of $120,000 per year for three seasons, totalling $360,000, will be sourced from Council’s To u r i s m - B u s i n e s s Development Special Levy.

Craig Prizeman of Wyoming and Mitchell Turner of Woy Woy each received $500 to represent NSW at the Australian Dart Championships held in Canberra.

Avoca Beach resident Riley Fitzsimmons was awarded $1,000 to represent the Australian U18 Sprint Kayak Team at the Junior World Sprint Kayaking Championships held in Canada in August, an opportunity that is seen as a pivotal step towards Riley’s long term goal to represent Australia at the

2016 Olympic Games.

The Wyoming Black Belt Martial Arts Karate Group was awarded $2,500 to attend the National Karate Championships held in Hobart in August, after the seven member team qualified for the national titles following impressive results at the NSW state titles.

Four Senior NAISDA Developing Artists have received a total of $1,000 to perform at the prestigious GARMA Festival to be held in Darwin in mid-August.

The festival is a

celebration of cultural traditions combining dance, song and art and provides an opportunity for the developing artists to make professional links.

The DART sponsorship program supports residents of the Gosford Local Government Area to represent and promote the Central Coast in sporting and cultural events where selection is merit based and of regional or greater significance.

Sea Eagles win at Bluetongue

he Manly Sea Eagles won comfortably over the New Zealand Warriors at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford on Sunday, August 1, with a score of 27-12.

Out to avenge their round 13 loss across the ditch, the Sea Eagles scored five tries to two in a game that always looked to go Manly’s way.

After Sunday’s performance, two things are certain.

The Sea Eagles are now genuine title contenders and David Williams owes Glenn Stewart a case of beer after scoring a hat trick, with each try coming courtesy of Stewart.

The lock forward was in good form, setting up four of his side’s five tries as he sent the Sea Eagles back into third position on the competition ladder.

Manly’s right side combination left the Warriors in complete disarray as all five tries came down that path.

Brett Stewart also grabbed a double to add to his impressive try-scoring tally since returning against the Roosters in round 16.

The Stewart brothers combined in a polished sweep movement as Glenn handed off the final pass to

Brett before he straightened and accelerated towards the try line.

Glenn set up Manly’s second as he picked up a loose ball and ran down field before distributing the ball to a flying Williams in support who streaked away to score under the sticks.

Manly enjoyed the better share of possession in the first half but weren’t able to capitalise and the Warriors made them pay as the away side went into half time trailing 10-6.

The two Warriors wingers combined from the scrum feed as Manu Vatuvei played the sweeping role as he got outside Steve Matai and squeezed between the centre and winger to offload the ball to fellow winger Ngani Laumape who crossed over.

Who else but Glenn Stewart set up Williams’ second as he kicked in behind Vatuvei for a determined Wolfman to win the race to the ball for a 14-6 lead.

He then laid off the final

pass for his winger soon after when Kieran Foran’s cross field kick was allowed to bounce as Williams went over for his third of the afternoon.

Shaun Johnson reduced the margin to within eight when he skipped around the defence to pierce through a gap to give his side hope.

But just when the Warriors appeared to have gained some sort of momentum, Kondrad Hurrell dropped the pill deep inside Warriors’ territory as fullback Stewart capitalised in the corner.

A crafty backline movement saw Glenn Stewart run to the line before popping the ball back for halfback Daly Cherry-Evans who then put Brett Stewart outside opposition centre Dane Neilson who had eyes only for the try line.

Cherry-Evans added the extra point late in the match to ensure their sixth consecutive win.

Tender accepted for Narara upgrade tender has been awarded by Gosford Council for the design, development and construction of the Narara Valley Sporting Precinct.

The precinct will encompass new sporting fields, floodlighting, amenities and a clubhouse.

It is to be developed as a holistic recreation area catering for a broad spectrum of ages and

abilities seeking a range of social, recreational and environmental experiences.

It is anticipated that once complete, the facility will have the capacity to host major regional sporting events.
