2021 Annual Report

OUR MOTIVATION AT CENTRAL CITY OPERA (CCO) has always been to discover and develop new ways to connect with you. For the second year in a row, we were unable to gather in our beloved opera house and experience the comfort of human connection and the transformative power of musical storytelling. However, we were determined not to let another summer go by without producing live performances. I hope you were able to visit us at Hudson Gardens for our outdoor productions of Rigoletto and Carousel or in Central City for Dido and Aeneas and CCO Al Fresco. We felt your support every step of the way. I’m happy to report that even after another tumultuous year of ever-changing health guidelines and pivoting of plans, CCO ended 2021 with a small margin of profit. The financial position of the company is the strongest it has been in quite some time. We strive to be good stewards of the funds received from donors and organizations because we would not be in the healthy position we are now without your support. It has truly been a community effort to keep our art alive but audiences have shown they are eager to return to the Opera House for our 90th season, which we fully intend to do. On a personal note, after 25 years with Central City Opera, I will be transitioning in my role as General/Artist Director to focus solely on the artistic side of the company. As part of CCO’s five-year strategic plan, the General Director duties will be moved to a newly created Chief Executive Officer position. I am extremely proud of the work we have created at Central City Opera during my tenure and I look forward to working with our new CEO, Pamela A. Pantos, to continue bringing great opera and musical theater to our audiences. Please enjoy reading about our highlights from 2021. NEW BRANDING! We worked with Ligature Creative to create an updated logo and color palette that allows for growth while still celebrating our history. The color palette is inspired by Central City as well as the interior painting, carpet and other elements of the opera house.

Voice Your Dreams ENDOWMENT UPDATE

Total Campaign Goal: $20 million

CCO OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED THE VOICE YOUR DREAMS ENDOWMENT $20 million campaign in 2021 with a new website (voiceyourdreams.org) and a starting list of named and pooled fund opportunities. A generous family foundation has graciously agreed to make the lead gift to this campaign with a matching grant of up to $10,000,000. As of December 31st, the campaign has cash and pledge agreements of $11,100,669 and remaining donor funds available to be matched is $4,449,665. We will be hosting a public celebration on July 30 in Central City to empower more gifts to this campaign before it ends in 2023.

2021 Theatre of Dreams Gala HYBRID EVENT

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY, the Theatre of Dreams Gala was a hybrid event, with a small reception at Novel Coworking and a virtual presentation online. We raised funds through a rowdy live auction hosted by auctioneer Halie Behr and enjoyed pre-recorded performances from past Apprentice Artists Maya Kherani, Galeano Salas, Dean Murphy and Rebecca Jo Loeb. The evening was capped with a heartwarming tribute to Lanny and Sharon Martin for their decades of commitment to CCO. We are proud of pulling off this technical feat!

2021 Summer Festival

Nothing could stop us from putting on a show! THANKS TO THE RELATIONSHIPS WE MADE through the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) and the generosity of our donors and patrons, we were able to produce Rigoletto and Carousel outside at Hudson Gardens as part of our 2021 Summer Festival. Even though we faced scorching temperatures, pesky afternoon showers and more than one near-cancellation due to severe lightning, nothing could stop us from putting on a show! We kept a presence in Central City with four CCO Al Fresco concerts and Dido and Aeneas performances in the Opera House Gardens and all company members resided in the town throughout the season. We made lifelong memories along the way and proved that Central City Opera is just as much of a powerhouse outside the jewel-box theater as it is inside.

Education & Community Engagement Programs 2021 WAS QUITE A YEAR IN EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. In spite of the challenges brought on by the pandemic, we managed to serve 41,638 people with 180 total programs, in-person and virtual. We’re proud of our accomplishments during this unprecedented time and look forward to when face masks and rapid tests are not the norm.

Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World We produced a brand-new production of the children’s opera Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World, employing an all-local cast and creative team, and premiered it at the Denver Art Museum.

Elixir of Love Concert The Denver Philharmonic's Lawrence Golan conducted Central City Opera stars Anna Christy, Matthew Plenk and Armando Contreras in a concert version of Gaetano Donizetti’s romantic romp, The Elixir of Love.

IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility) Training In partnership with The Equity Project, CCO staff, board members and touring artists have engaged in meaningful dialogue regarding the future of Central City Opera and what it means to attract and include audiences from all backgrounds. This work serves as a vital foundation in the company’s five-year plan.

Virtual Music Words Opera Educator Workshop CCO collaborated with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis on a virtual Music Words Opera Educator Workshop, the first one of its kind. Three clinicians specializing in composition, creative writing and drama met with educators from all over the country over Zoom for four days. The workshop participants created original songs and developed techniques to jumpstart creativity in the classroom.

CCO Podcast The summer podcast hit its sixth season in 2021 and focused on the festival productions of Rigoletto, Carousel and Dido and Aeneas, with interviews with directors, principal artists and technical managers. A free resource, the podcast is a great way for students to find out more about careers in opera and other performing arts.

Historic Properties UPDATES

THE SUMMER OF 2021 SAW THE HILL COME BACK TO LIFE as festival performers and company members moved into the historic cottages for a season of rehearsals and performances. While it was exciting to see action in town once again, the off-season was still filled with the typical repairs, restorations and preservation necessary for our 27 historic properties.

Teller House Grand Staircase Renovation Independent Painting repaired the plaster and painted the ceilings and trim of the third and fourth levels of the Teller House Grand Staircase. The walls will be painted in early 2022. This project is being funded by the Guild.

Central City Holiday Lighting Contest CCO won 1st place in the Central City Holiday Lighting Contest for our Winter Holiday Opera Garden Lighting Display.

GRAND OPENING IN 2022 Jonathan Hays, returning CCO Artist (since 1994) and Brian Cook, CCO Orchestra Personnel Co-Manager, broke ground on the construction phase of their Eureka Street Popcorn shop in the old Teller Law Office across the street from the Opera House. Water and sewer have been installed for the first time in this 160-year-old structure and electrical and plumbing are finished. The shop will be open in time for the 2022 Festival season.

Furniture Donations

We received several historic furniture donations to improve the functionality of our historic properties. Friend of CCO, Stephanie Oliver, donated a mid-century sofa custom designed by interior designer Charles Edwin Stanton, the husband of Mary Bonfils. It has been placed in the Foundry Rehearsal Lobby.

2021 Virtual Programs THE ONLINE WORLD ALLOWED US TO CONNECT AND ENGAGE with more people than ever in 2021. Through Zoom webinars, virtual meet & greets, lectures and videos, we continued to develop programs for all levels of learners.

Lunch & Learns

Envisioned as a replacement for festival pretalks and talkbacks, the Lunch & Learns sought to expand festival-goers knowledge of the season’s repertoire and to gain a behind-thescenes look at what goes into producing such a festival. Each session was 30 minutes long, with an additional 15 minutes for Q&A and was streamed on Zoom and Facebook Live for free.

Artist Happy Hours

During a normal summer season, our audience members and performers have the opportunity to “Mix & Mingle” at happy hour on the Teller House deck after the show. Due to another year of COVID-19 precautions, we moved the happy hours to Zoom, where mainstage cast members mixed their favorite beverage while in conversation about their stage characters, hobbies and other fun facts.

Virtual Property Tours A large part of our mission is the stewardship of 27 historic Central City properties. To that end, we created a virtual tour series to give a peek into the houses and buildings that are not normally open to the public. In 2021, we released video tours of The Pink House, The Johnson House and the McFarlane House. A Teller House documentary will premiere in 2022, to mark its 150th anniversary.

Opera Central In 2020, we began Opera Central, a video interview series where artists and administrators come together and talk about the world of the arts. In 2021, we released Episodes 8 and 9, which focused on how equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA) is vital to the future of music in Colorado.

THROUGHOUT ANOTHER TUMULTUOUS YEAR, THE CENTRAL CITY OPERA GUILD stayed steadfast in its mission to help support the opera in any way possible. President Cindy Koch led the Guild in resuming most of their normal activities and members were so happy to reunite in person.

Spring Membership Party

L’Esprit de Noel

Eager to return to live events, the Spring 2021 Membership Party had one of the largest turnouts in history, with 115 in attendance.

Virtual yet again, L’Esprit toured the historic McCourt Mansion, owned by Guild member Karen Christianson and previously owned by Peter McCourt, the brother of Baby Doe Tabor. A quartet of carolers performed a holiday medley and CCO Annual Giving Manager Michael Walker hosted the video tour, which was sponsored by Sanctuary Advisors. Thanks to Katie Grassby, Karen Ritz, Suzie Erzinger, Melissa Rick and the rest of the committee for their amazing service. The kick-off party was held at Shaver-Ramsey in Cherry Creek North on November 18.

Planting Day The annual planting day in the Central City Gardens was held on June 9 and saw double the amount of usual volunteers. So many people helped plant the gardens that most of the work was done before lunch!

Fall Membership Coffee 70 attendees enjoyed beautiful weather at the stunning home of Board member Kevin Kearney and Dr. Sally Scott. Kira Dills-DeSurra performed and Pat Pearce gave remarks on the upcoming summer season.

Plein Air Festival THE PLEIN AIR FESTIVAL returned to Central City in September 2021 for its fourth year, with 29 artists traveling from across the country to create and sell their stunning paintings of the town. Turnout was higher than any previous years, with beautiful weather throughout the entire weekend. Sponsors included Nancy Benson, Monarch Casino Resort Spa, The City of Central, The Central City Business Improvement District, Kevin Kearney and Dr. Sarah Scott and Karen and Andrew Ritz.

Artist Reception

CCO added several new events to the weekend, including an opening night reception at the Monarch Casino and Resort Spa in Black Hawk, where David Pyle gave a presentation of the paintings he created during the summer festival.

Live Music Performances

CCO Al Fresco concerts continued from the Opera House Gardens and Teller House deck, with Sara Barber, Miguel Ángel Ortega Bañales and Jeremy Reger serenading visitors with opera classics and lively tunes.

KidZone Art Tent The Guild once again sponsored the KidZone Art Tent, where kids created fun crafts related to opera and the arts.

Historic Property Tours For the first time in history, several of CCO’s historic properties were open to the public for self-guided tours and Eric Chinn, Pat Pearce and Wanda Larson led groups through the Opera House and Teller House.
