Our winter edition of the Central Catholic Magazine focuses on the theme of inclusion, one of the pillars of our mission statement.

We pride ourselves on being a place where every student can, “Be Challenged. Be Yourself. Belong.” A few months ago we shared the news of our newest employee, David Blue, Director of Diversity and Inclusion. We profile David and his new position, showing the positive impact his role will have in our community. We also feature Ben Sprouse, a senior who took the initiative to work to end loneliness in the halls of Central Catholic with his Friend to Friend program.

Who are these guys?

This March, the Central Catholic Department of Theatre takes on the legendary musical, Babes In Arms. This quintessential, “Hey kids, let’s put on a show!” musical boasts one of the greatest scores ever written, with songs that include “My Funny Valentine” and “The Lady Is A Tramp,” just to name a few. Set in the 1930s with characters that are larger than life, you won’t be able to hold back the laughs as the plot twists and turns around a group of teenaged apprentices working at a summer stock theatre.

Message from the President Greetings!

This is my first letter to Central Catholic Magazine’s faithful readers in my role as President of my alma mater (’62) and I am excited to use this space to share the great things the school, our students, and our staff are doing.

There is an adage, “first impressions are lasting,” which rings true for me in my role at Central Catholic. Upon arriving on campus, I was instantly reminded of the welcoming community I first became a part of so many years ago. Although the faces have changed, the invitation to become part of a broader, nurturing family of students and teachers has not. This is what is now called, “Ramily.”

It is critically important that our first impression be lasting to all who look to us to make a positive connection. To that end, we were pleased to announce the creation of the position of Director of Diversity and Inclusion, and to secure the services of David Blue to fill this role. His credentials and success in this field are exemplary and we welcome him to help us strengthen our relevance to the entire community.

As the year rapidly progresses, I am coming to know a new Central Catholic built upon the foundation of early years. The students and staff immediately impress as bright, active, and happy individuals who clearly seek to excel in all they do. It is refreshing to see a young student body eager to learn and better this world through their service and acts of good will, and a staff so dedicated to encouraging and teaching today’s youth.

I am proud to be able to share a few of our students’ achievements. They have been recognized from outside the walls of Central Catholic as representatives of the educational, artistic, and athletic success of students who work hard to achieve excellence in diverse endeavors that are uniquely rewarding.

Three students received honors for all-state musician selections, four students were presented with the Portland Metro Scholastic Arts Gold and Silver Key Awards, five students received recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Competition, and 92 juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. These accomplishments are just a few ways in which our students have demonstrated their academic excellence since September. Our Drama Department also received the highest of compliments from those who came to view firsthand the product of hours of hard work. The fall production, Twelve Angry Jurors, was an impressive and successful demonstration of our students’ talent.

In addition to the superior arts and academic performances mentioned above, our Rams continue to shine on the courts and fields. Central Catholic students and coaches continuously 2 | Central Catholic Magazine

come together to publicly display the greatness we can achieve through teamwork. Four fall sports teams placed in the top ten for their sport in the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Academic Program. Placement is determined based on results in the state level athletic events, sportsmanship at all sporting events, and team grade point averages. One team that must be mentioned for its unique accomplishment is the Boys’ Cross Country team for earning Central Catholic’s fourth consecutive OSAA state championship title.

November marked an impressive month in regard to our students’ dedication to service by helping the needy in our community.

The enthusiasm associated with our annual Food, Coat, Blanket, and Penny Drive was a true joy to witness. In one short week, the students banded together to raise nearly 8,000 food items, over 1,500 coats, 560 blankets, and $8,321 to donate to local charities. In addition, our students hosted the inaugural Central Catholic Survivor competition the very same week and raised $16,401 to benefit the Children’s Cancer Association. Our students practice and preach what is taught at Central Catholic through the Campus Ministry and Christian Service programs.

They represent our school and the broader Catholic community through their efforts to live the Gospel’s teachings.

The annual students 4 students fundraiser recently kicked off and is in full swing. As I attended Central Catholic during the days of Almond Roca, students 4 students is new to me, but once again, I am impressed by our students’ hard work and excitement toward creating change. Every student is reaching out to supporters in the local community to ask for donations to go toward tuition assistance. Last year, this fundraiser raised over $270,000 and I look forward to seeing how successful it will be this year.

Our students’ work is undeniably inspiring. They should be proud.

We all should be proud of what they are accomplishing in our school’s name. I personally couldn’t feel more proud as an alumnus, a past parent, and now our school’s newest president.

It’s a fall day, and in typical Portland fashion, the rain falls in sheets and soaks all who are not protected by the shield of a jacket or umbrella. Cars crowd 24th and Stark as parents drop off their students and the students fortunate enough to have a car to drive compete for curb space and run to the closest set of doors.

The halls of Central Catholic High School are full of chatter and movement as students arrive on campus. They make their way to their lockers, their classrooms, and the locker rooms to drop off their unneeded supplies, stopping to talk or to check their cell phones along the way.

A bell rings signaling a warning that students must make their way to their designated classrooms. The halls slowly begin to empty once again as students file through doorways and take their seats. A final bell rings, class starts, and the teachers begin to take roll.

Several blocks away, a student sits on the bus, nervously tapping their foot and watching the minutes tick by. With a heavy backpack and wet shoes, this student stood at the bus stop earlier this morning, frustrated because their only form of transportation was running late.

The bus finally reaches the stop closest to the high school, and the student begins to jog the three blocks to the front doors of Central Catholic. They push through the doors only to realize the halls are empty. In dismay, the student walks toward the attendance office, head down, dreading the JUG that most likely awaits them.

Although culture, race, gender, and socio-economic status play significant roles in diversity, the account above shows that they are not the only factors; sometimes, something as simple as not having a ride to school or a license can greatly impact a student’s life. To ensure that all the various aspects of diversity are met and every student feels a sense of inclusion and empowerment in our community, Central Catholic hired David Blue in October 2015 to fill a brand new role, Director of Diversity and Inclusion.

“There is a big difference between what is equal and what is equitable, and I am a resource to students, parents, and staff to help bridge that gap,” David Blue says.

For example, although all students may receive equal consequences for arriving late to class, these consequences are not necessarily equitable because of the student’s reason for being late. “My role is all about building relationships, which is such a big part of bridging the equity gap,” David explains. “Not every student has the same opportunities, and staff members need to know about their students’ unique home lives so they can respond to situations in appropriate ways.”

Prejudice, inequity, and adversity are unfortunately hard to avoid in life, but by mastering skills of self-advocating, students can learn to overcome such obstacles.

While working to ensure all students receive equitable opportunity during their time at Central Catholic and that Central Catholic represents a diverse student body, David is also a resource for the multicultural clubs and events, as well as social justice initiatives.

Central Catholic is no novice to embracing inclusiveness. Every year, the school hosts International Days, a weeklong event that includes an assembly to celebrate the cultural dances and songs of various countries as well as lunches where students can taste their way through many cultural delicacies.

In addition to International Days, over 10 clubs and student support groups are dedicated to observing diversity, including, but not limited to, the AfricanAmerican Students United, Equality Alliance, Latino Student Union, and the Asian/Pacific Islander Club.

David recognizes that clubs need much more than financial assistance; they need knowledge-based resources and managerial help, and he looks forward to offering guidance in several ways. David is observing Central Catholic’s unique culture and looks forward to finding the blind spots and ways to fill them, he says.

“Central Catholic is already doing well,” David acknowledges. “Through admissions, they demonstrate to their community that Central Catholic is a viable choice for a diverse audience. The staff has a passion for diversity and inclusion; they want to make a change and encourage global awareness.” David will also work to find innovative ways for students to learn and have their voices be heard. He plans to bring a diverse array of speakers to Central Catholic so the students can be exposed to a variety of perspectives and life experiences and he also hopes to be able to take students to cultural conferences and events.

“The wonderful thing about this position is that it means we as a school are making concrete and real recognition of what we need to do in order to make Central Catholic truly inclusive,” says Philippe Kreiter, who teaches French and Spanish, is the co-leader of the Latino Student Union, and conducts outreach with the Spanish speaking Catholic community. “I think David is an ideal representative; he is approachable and yet exudes confidence and has a proven track record in the area of diversity.”

David has plans to gather a few diversity committees made up of students, faculty, and parents so that they can work together to make sure the needs of the student body are met. Although a willing advocate for students, David’s ultimate goal is to teach students to advocate for themselves. At the end of the day, students have to take ownership of their own education and educational experience, he says.

David explains diversity as the wallpaper of the school, whereas inclusion is its programming; it is with inclusion that you allow students to truly see themselves as a part of Central Catholic.

In a world where texting seems to be a more prevalent form of communication than speaking, it can be difficult for teenagers to establish a connection with their peers. The hustle and bustle of high school sometimes causes simple things, like noticing a student is alone or reaching out and being a friend to a quiet student, to unfortunately be overlooked.

Senior Ben Sprouse noticed a phenomenon sweeping the halls of Central Catholic – there were students who sat alone at lunch or did not attend extracurricular activities. Ben himself understood shyness and the struggle of making friends and knew how difficult it could be to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger. Ben and a group of his peers saw this problem, and rather than ignore it, they found a solution. “I thought about how easy it would be to help students who are lonely find a friend; to make a connection,” Ben said.

This past summer, Ben reached out to Dean Heuberger, Student Services Coordinator, to share his idea regarding how to make sure every student felt comfortable and had the opportunity to establish relationships with their peers. Ben wanted to create a space that encouraged relationship-building among peers; he wanted to find a way to bring a diverse array of students together so that they could communicate and learn from one another.

With Ben’s idea and the help of Central Catholic staff members Dean Heuberger and Danyelle Ramsey, Director of Campus Ministry, as well as a donation from a supportive parent, the Friend to Friend program was born.

“As a staff, we have tried different avenues to create a space that fostered relationship-building among all students, especially those who are quieter,” Dean explained. “The fact that Ben and his peers came up with their own solution, a solution that is truly student driven; it is so real and authentic.”

Ben invited a variety of students to join him for lunch – he approached students who seemed content with solidarity and those who didn’t, those interested in sports, students who enjoyed science or math, and those passionate about the arts, among other things. The end result was a diverse group of students interested in making new friends and being resources to each other. He reserved a classroom so that the group would have a place to consistently get together. “The first lunch was a bit quiet and awkward…

I was doing most of the talking,” Ben said. “Now, a few months after we started meeting for lunch, everyone is opening up and I do most of the listening.”

The students meet about twice a week for lunch. They do not need an agenda or a lesson plan; they simply make the time to get together, eat their food, and talk to one another. There is no pressure, no need to fit a certain mold or to have a specific interest. The classroom is a judgment-free zone where students are encouraged to embrace each other for both their similarities and differences.

As the group grows closer and more comfortable, they are planning additional activities to enjoy together. “We just had a really successful and

fun bowling event, which we hope to do again, and a few students have talked about wanting to have a Christmas party,” Ben shared.

The classroom they use at lunch is more of a home base, rather than a mandatory location to share lunch together. Some students choose to eat together at a table or sit in the Weston Commons, the main point is that no one has to be alone. Although numbers of lunch attendees fluctuate due to schedules, there are always students in the designated classroom. All students interested in joining are welcome – no reservations, applications, or connections to existing members of the group are necessary.

“We have stood back and watched as Ben and his peers have really taken control of this program and done all of the work,” Dean said. “As a parent and a teacher, it is pretty amazing to see this group of students really build relationships with one another – it gives so much hope and really shows all of the good things students do and will continue to do after Central Catholic.”

Toward the end of October, Ben and his team presented their work to the faculty and staff, sharing their success stories. Ben spoke about a student who was quiet and kept to himself in the halls. Ben invited this student to share lunch with Friend to Friend and after a few weeks of attending these community-building lunches, this student now goes out of his way to greet Ben in the halls and even showed interest in attending a football game.

Overall, the students are finding common ground, talking about things they are passionate about, and connecting. They are breaking down the barriers of cliques and stereotypes that so often prohibit friendships from forming.

Shortly after the presentation to faculty and staff, a teacher who was emotionally touched circulated an e-mail because she wanted to support the Friend to Friend program and urged her colleagues to do the same. She encouraged the community to donate to the program in order to help them fund their lunches and activities. Teachers and staff members replied to the e-mail and donations began coming in.

David Blue, Director of Diversity and Inclusion, was impressed and intrigued by the students’ presentation – he decided to visit and join their lunch. “It was so nice to see the students have the opportunity to just be themselves, which can be tough to do in our society,” David said. “It was an authentic and refreshing sight; the students were breaking down barriers and just hanging out, having a good time.”

Ben will graduate from Central Catholic in the spring and plans to pursue a degree in social work. He hopes to build the Friend to Friend program so that it is strong enough to continue without him next year.

The capital campaign kicked off in 2011 to raise funds for the construction of the beautiful Monsignor Tim Murphy Center. Loans from the Parish Funds Trust at the Archdiocese of Portland are being paid off by pledges made by our Alumni, parents, and friends, and we are on track to close the books on the project in 2019.

students 4 students Fundraiser Our annual student fundraiser is officially underway!

Remember when students used to lug cases of Almond Roca® from Central Catholic and sell it door to door? Almond Roca® was effectively spread citywide by eager Central Catholic Rams.

Much as in the past, our students are hitting the streets on behalf of Central Catholic. The difference is today, instead of candy, our students are bringing an important message to the Portland area: one-half of their classmates would not be able to attend Central Catholic without the help of financial aid. Our students are raising funds to help their own classmates benefit from a Central Catholic education.

The students 4 students fundraiser helps keep tuition affordable for all students and most importantly, the students are fundraising for each other! If a student approaches you for a donation, please take a moment to listen to their request and ask questions about their school experience.

For some of these students, asking for donations is difficult, but talking about what they love about Central Catholic is easy!

You can participate in this fundraiser even if you don’t know a current student, or don’t live in the area. Alumni Updates What’s Up with You?

Mike Kirkmire ’88 competed in the Coeur d’Alene Ironman Triathlon this past summer with a time of 14:17:25 in 108 degree temperatures.

Mike has completed 19 ultramarathons and five half-Ironman triathlons in the last four years.

Emily (Ferguson) Sundholm ‘01 and husband Aaron welcomed a son, Vance Lincoln Joseph (above), on October 5, 2015. He joins brothers Anders (5) and Finnegan (3).

Nick ‘01 and Colleen (Sinnott) ‘02 Santangelo welcomed a son, Nicholas Kirk, on February 7, 2015.

Galen Rupp ‘04 and wife Keara welcomed twins, Grayson and Emmie, on July 29, 2014.

Kate Mead ‘07 and Dominic Forte ‘07 were married on May 30, 2015 at St. James Cathedral in Seattle. Kate graduated from the University of Washington in 2011, from UW Law School in 2014, and is now practicing patent law in Seattle.

Dom graduated from UW in 2011 and from UW Medical School in 2015. He was commissioned in the US Army Medical Corp on May 22 and began his residency in surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center on July 1.

Nick Trebelhorn ‘07 (above) graduated Magna Cum Laude from Seton Hall University in 2011 with a degree in International Relations and Diplomacy.

He joined the US Air Force in December 2014 as a cryptologic linguist and is currently stationed in Monterey, California at the Defense Language Institute learning Persian (Farsi).

Alex Haneman ‘09 graduated last year with his BS in Computer Science from the University of Portland. He is working in his first post-college job as Associate Software Engineer for D+H, a financial technologies company with offices downtown.
