THINKING ABOUT MAKING A GIFT
Are you a non-itemizer?
If you don’t itemize on your taxes, you will be allowed to deduct up to $1,000 (if you’re single) or $2,000 (married/filing jointly) in cash gifts annually to public charities (not including supporting organizations or donor advised funds). This was a temporary COVID provision that will become permanent in 2026. This is only for those who take the standard deduction.
Important Note: Even if you take the standard deduction on your Federal tax return, you can, and always have been allowed to deduct your charitable contributions on your Oregon tax return, so save those receipts!
TO CENTRAL CATHOLIC?
The New Tax
Law Explained
Some recent changes to the tax law, which go into effect in 2026, could impact your charitable giving. While it is important for you to direct any questions about your philanthropic strategies to a tax professional, it is our hope that this information will be a helpful starting point as you consider the most impactful strategy for directing your philanthropic dollars.
The Standard Deduction is NOW Permanent
Do you itemize?
Starting in 2026, individuals can only deduct charitable contributions that exceed .5% of your adjusted gross income. Charitable contributions in excess of allowable limits can still be carried forward five years.
For example:
If your AGI = $75,000, anything over your first $375 will be deductible
If your AGI = $200,000, anything over your first $1,000 will be deductible
If your AGI - $800,000, anything over your first $4,000 will be deductible
Donors may deduct gifts only if they exceed the .5% threshold; consider maximizing your giving in 2025 before the new rule takes effect.
Contribution Limits Based on Gift Type
Cash gifts:
Up to 60% of AGI
The higher standard deduction set in 2017 is now permanent (no expiration), adjusts for inflation, and is now $15,750 (if you’re single) and $31,500 (married/filing jointly). If you don’t itemize, you might still benefit if you give appreciated stock, real estate; or if you are 70 ½ or older, make a gift from your IRA.
The SALT Deduction Has Been Expanded, at Least for Now
The State and Local Tax (SALT) Deduction allows taxpayers who itemize their federal tax returns to deduct certain state and local taxes. In 2017, tax law drastically lowered many taxpayer deductions to a maximum of $10,000. Taxpayers who had been itemizing no longer had the incentive to do so. With the new 2025 tax law, the SALT deduction cap is now raised to $40,000 for those with an AGI less than $500,000. However, the cap is on a downward sliding scale for those with an AGI greater than $500,000.
Stock and Other Capital Gain Property Gifts: Up to 30% of AGI
In-kind Non-cash (other than capital gains property) Gifts: Up to 50% of AGI
All of the above are subject to the .5% AGI floor starting in 2026
NOTE: Donations exceeding these limits can be carried forward as deductions for up to five years.
NOTE: Starting in 2030, it will revert back to $10,000.
Are you a Senior (age 70 ½ plus)?
Don’t Forget about QCDs
If you have an IRA and are an individual age 70 ½ plus, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) remain the most tax-efficient way for you to make a gift to Central Catholic. If you’re aged 73 or older you MUST begin making Required Minimum Distributions from your IRA. Normally, these are taxed as income, but a QCD is tax-deductible excluded from income (the donor cannot also claim a charitable deduction for the same amount). For tax year 2025, the QCD limit for individual taxpayers is $108,000. The QCD limit for 2026 is $105,000.

Notice of non-discrimination as it applies to students and employees at Central Catholic High School:
Central Catholic High School admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin to all of the rights, privileges, programs, and activities accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national, or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, and other school administered programs. Likewise, Central Catholic High School does not discriminate against any applicant for employment because of race, color, national or ethnic origin, or gender.

Dear Ram Community,
We are living in an extraordinary time. A time that offers so many questions, where “views” and “likes” hold so much power, and where information flows in a non-stop stream.
As President of Central Catholic, I have the unique privilege of watching how 860+ young people rise to face the challenges that come with being a high school student today. It is not always easy for them, but our students are blessed to be surrounded by a community that offers something that can be rare and powerful: opportunity, support, and a sense of belonging. A community that exists and helps our students rise to the challenges because of your continued generosity.
As we begin a new school year, I am renewed with optimism as I have the privilege of witnessing the extraordinary impact of your investments. It’s visible in a freshman finding their voice as they step to the front of a classroom to present for the very first time, and in the resilience of a senior who is balancing a lead role in the fall play with AP classes and the college search process. It is also visible in the small moments when it would be easy to succumb to the doom-and-gloom news cycle. Our students are choosing optimism, joy, and personal connection—and it is powerful to watch.
Every day there are countless moments of growth, grace, and curiosity that fill our hallways. Your support doesn’t just ensure this continuation—it propels our mission to develop students into critical thinkers who are the best version of themselves, prepared for where their gifts meet the world.
As you flip through the pages of this Annual Report, I hope you feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. Central Catholic’s relentless commitment to delivering on its mission is what makes us special. It is the reason our school has become a pillar of Portland. It is the reason our students have developed as leaders, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners. It is the reason our athletics program has delivered multiple state championships over the last decade alone. And it is the reason our students have a strong sense of belonging—and our alumni remain so deeply invested in our mission long after they graduate.
It is only because of your generous support that we are able to sustain and grow our mission. Whether you give because you believe in the power of a Catholic education, or Central Catholic had a direct impact on your life—or you want to ensure our young people have access to an education rooted in faith, excellence, and compassion—your generosity is helping to shape lives and build futures grounded in hope, compassion, and integrity. Something that is needed now more than ever.
With heartfelt thanks,

Colin McGinty, President

Art Advocacy Action
This summer, the Central Catholic community was invited to explore how art can serve as a prophetic voice—a tool for truth-telling, empathy, and healing. Students were encouraged to reflect on their identity, values, and hopes for the world through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching, and then translate those reflections into creative action.
The response was extraordinary. Our students submitted unique pieces of art spanning a remarkable array of mediums: painting, textiles and fiber arts, dance and movement, photography, music and sound, drawing, film and animation, sculpture and found object assemblage, performance art and spoken word, metal and woodworking, and more. Each piece represented a personal and communal response to the call to justice, compassion, and service, collectively demonstrating the ways in which faith and creativity intersect to inspire change.
These works expressed our community’s commitment to protecting the dignity of the human person, caring for creation, standing with the vulnerable, and building a just society. They ranged from intimate personal reflections to bold, public statements—each one a testament to the courage and imagination of our students, and to the ways in which art can illustrate truths that words alone cannot convey.
Throughout the year, Central Catholic will display these pieces, inviting students, families, and visitors to engage with the transformative power of art. These exhibitions will not only celebrate creativity, but also foster dialogue about justice, empathy, and hope; showing how our students are using their unique God-given gifts to envision a world of possibility.

CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS

On August 6, members of our Lady Ram community were treated to tropical drinks, Hawaiian bites, and plenty of fun at the Muu Muus and Mai Tais auction buy-in event.

On August 12, members of the Ramily enjoyed an unforgettable performance by world-renowned saxophonist and current parent, Mike Phillips. Hosted by current parents, Brian and Karolina Pienovi, this exclusive evening was available only to those who attended our annual auction.

On June 18, we welcomed members of the Class of 2029 and their families to Sneak Peek for an evening of connection and community.

Kids of all ages joined us on campus this summer for a wide variety of summer camps and classes— from cooking and sports, to math and college application workshops—each offering fun and learning for everyone.

This June our students, and three rising Rams, brought Anne of Green Gables to life in special summer performances.

NAMED ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS
Throughout its history, Central Catholic High School has maintained a deep commitment to providing a college preparatory Catholic education to students regardless of their family’s ability to meet tuition requirements.
The school’s General Endowment Fund provides a sound financial foundation, which in turn provides significant scholarship money and tuition assistance for students in the future. Only a portion of the earnings on the principal amount is used annually for scholarships and tuition assistance, making this a perpetual gift.
Fund balances listed are as of June 30, 2025.

SETTING UP A NAMED SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Currently there are over 140 endowed scholarships at Central Catholic High School, many of which have been created in honor or memory of loved ones. A new scholarship is established when the individual fund balance reaches or exceeds a principal balance of $25,000 and has accrued interest for a minimum of one year. Only a portion of the interest earned on the principal amount is used annually for scholarships, which allows annual awards to continue in perpetuity.

WE ARE CENTRAL CATHOLIC

The following donors made gifts between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, in response to various efforts including, but not limited to, the Central Catholic Fund, the Parent Investment Program, the Presidents’ Dinner and Auction, and the RamRaiser Student Fundraiser. The list also includes donors who made estate gifts, pledge payments, memorial gifts, and unsolicited gifts—as well as companies that matched these gifts. These donors include current students who are making first-time gifts, and alumni going back to the Class of 1944. They also range from past parents whose children graduated from Central Catholic in the 1960s to current parents who made gifts while also paying full tuition.
We offer our heartfelt thanks to all who have made contributions to Central Catholic over the past fiscal year, both financial and in-kind. We would not be the school we are without you. Thank you for all the ways you contribute, for the role you play in the Central Catholic tradition, and for ensuring our mission continues today and into the future.
We strive to correctly recognize each of our generous donors. Please notify the Office of Advancement at 503.230.1056 or Elaine Payne at epayne@centralcatholichigh.org of any corrections or omissions. We are profoundly grateful for your support.

More than 55 years ago, Emmett Brennan ’73 stepped onto the campus of Central Catholic, (which at the time was an all-boys high school with just over 500 students) as a quiet, thoughtful teenager from the west side of town who didn’t know a single person. Despite the unfamiliar environment, Emmett quickly found himself surrounded by teachers and friends whose support and guidance helped him feel a strong sense of connection and belonging.
“It was difficult to make friends at first,” he remembers. “But being in a smaller class helped. The teachers were always willing to take the time, and that made all the difference.”
Now 70, Emmett can still recall the moments and mentors that shaped his path. From learning how to think critically in religion and English classes, to struggling through sophomore year math—until Sr. Mary Lonergan, OSF helped the subject finally click—his time at Central Catholic left a lifelong mark.
“She gave me that pathway,” he says of Sr. Mary. “That ‘aha’ moment was one of the early lights in my life. We formed a great friendship and have stayed in touch ever since.”
Emmett credits Central Catholic with giving him more than an education—it gave him a way of seeing the world. “The school taught me how to analyze, how to ask questions,

and not to accept things at face value. It laid the foundation for how I approached college, my career, and life in general.”
After graduating, Emmett pursued a degree in graphic design with a minor in mathematics at Portland State University. His success, he says, can be traced directly back to the foundation laid at Central Catholic. And even as life took him across the world—including a memorable research stint at the British Museum in London— his gratitude never faded.
“My parents were immigrants who didn’t have much,” he shares, “but they made sure all six of us got a good Catholic education. They saved everything they could, and I worked summers to help. That experience shaped my belief in the power of education.”
That belief ultimately inspired Emmett, who was already a long-time donor, to leave a legacy gift to Central Catholic in his estate. “I kept coming back to this question: ‘What do I want to be remembered for?’” Emmett explains. “Every time, the answer was Central Catholic. That’s where it all began for me.”
His gift is intended to help ensure future generations of students have access to the same life-changing opportunities he experienced at Central Catholic. His generosity reflects a deep commitment to education and a lasting belief in the power of learning to transform lives.
“Education is near the top of the list for what I think is important,” he says. “Especially now, when there’s so much disinformation out there. Central Catholic taught me how to look at a situation, break it down, and figure out what’s real. That’s more important than ever.”
When Emmett reflects on Central Catholic’s core values today—Faith and Love, Community, Academic Excellence, Diversity, Compassion, and Integrity—he views the evolution of the school with pride and hope. “Back then, the foundation was always to give you a good education and a solid grounding in your faith. That hasn’t changed. What’s changed is how we’re applying compassion and how we see the full picture of each person’s story.”
As Central Catholic continues to grow, Emmett’s support, along with the support of many others, helps ensure the mission lives on for generations to come. Whether he is attending the spring musical, keeping tabs on school news, or sending in a donation to support a fundraiser, his commitment to Central Catholic is as strong as ever.
I’m excited to see Central Catholic continue evolving in a positive direction,” he says. “I’m proud to be part of that story.

Anyone who worked at or attended Central Catholic between 1976 and 2013 would remember Bill Hankel as kind, helpful and very much the consummate educator. Bill, who passed away on September 1, 2025, began his career as a science teacher and coach at Lakeview High School, serving there from 1972-1975. But, aside from a three-year stint as principal at Regis High School in Stayton (1982-1985), he spent the rest of his career at Central Catholic, where in addition to teacher and coach, he also served as Vice Principal and Director of Technology, retiring from Central Catholic in 2013. Before he began his career as an educator, Bill served in the Army during the Vietnam War, being honorably discharged in 1970.
Bill was married to Jeanne Oads for 54 years and was the proud father of six children, all Central Catholic graduates: Steve ’91, Bob ’92, John ’97, Mary ’99, Tom ’00, and Therese ’03. Bill loved his 14 grandchildren and after he retired, he enjoyed volunteering at the Vista House on Crown Point and pursuing his love of history and geology, especially the geology of the Columbia Gorge.

When he retired in 2010, Dan Cronen said he hoped his students would remember that he “cared about them enough to give them the help they needed.”
Odds are that’s exactly how his students remember him.
Former Central Catholic math teacher Dan Cronen passed away on January 21, 2025. When he arrived at Central Catholic in 1998 as a recently retired teacher from the Tigard School district, he brought 23 years of teaching experience with him. He also began bringing middle school students too numerous to count to campus for Math Fest, a Saturday event he founded where students are treated to the exploration of math in fun and exciting new ways.
Born in Astoria, Dan earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Portland. In 1972 he married Cathy O’Connor and together they raised three children: Dan, Elizabeth and Kate. After he retired, he continued to tutor students in math, but also reveled in visiting the Oregon coast and as a loyal Pilot, attending basketball games at the University of Portland.
Dan is remembered fondly by his former Central Catholic colleagues, including Pam Boardman who shared, “Dan was a great teacher because he was also into learning new things himself. Dan and I both enjoyed going to math conferences to learn new techniques and new ways to teach students. Dan inspired me to be a better teacher. He was compassionate and encouraging to students and faculty alike. He has a special place in my heart.”

Mark your calendars for next year’s RAM
Reunions
The classes of 1955, 1965, 1975, 1985, and alumni from the classes of 1954 and earlier came together in the Weston Commons on August 2, 2025, to celebrate their milestone reunions. Central Catholic welcomed alumni back to campus with food, drinks, and photos, creating a warm setting for classmates to reconnect. Laughter and conversation filled the room as stories were shared and memories revisited. Many alumni toured the school, some returning for the first time in decades, and were pleased to see how the campus has grown while still holding on to its familiar traditions.
If you would like to organize a reunion outside of the marquee years of 40, 50, 60, or 70+, please contact Dustin Daniel, Manager of Alumni Engagement, at ddaniel@centralcatholichigh.org for more information.
