The short plays run the gamut from elections to impeachments, from personal stories to political battles, and from funny to tragic. Whether it’s a comedy roast of Thomas Jefferson, a nuanced monologue about social upheaval during the Johnson administration, or a mini-musical about George Bush Sr., you’re never going to know what’s coming next!

Dear Central Catholic Community,
As I write this, we just wrapped up our annual Open House where we welcomed hundreds of middle school students and their families to campus. It was a great event that showcased the very best of who we are. It was also the first Open House for the 20 new members of our Ramily who joined our faculty and staff in late August. They were eager to help showcase the power of the work we do to transform the lives of the students and families we serve.
I could not be more excited about the work we are doing to welcome a strong Class of 2029 (yes, 2029!), but I would be remiss if I did not share highlights of our new Class of 2028. Simply put, the Class of 2028 is solid. We welcomed 240 students from 67 different schools; 71% were from Catholic schools, 29% from non-Catholic schools (including private and public). Of these 240 young men and women, 108 are following in the footsteps of an alum or current student relative, 50% identify as Catholic, and 33% are students of color. These fresh faces are already making an impact on our current students and are contributing to the fabric of our community through sports, leadership, and faith-based activities.
We are not just seeing success in growth and development of faculty, staff, and students, we are also seeing growth in your support. In this Annual Report we highlight some of these successes.
In the 2023-2024 school year we provided $1,996,380 in tuition assistance, and also $820,715 in endowed scholarship awards. In total, 510 students received scholarships, tuition assistance, or some combination thereof.
The principal balance of our combined General Endowment and Scholarship Funds exceeded $18.7 million and includes five new scholarships added over the course of the past year. Our Legacy Endowment for Operations grew to a principal balance of $1.9 million. Overall, the principal of our Endowment Fund exceeded $20 million.
Thank you for your continued interest in—and support of—Central Catholic High School. Whether you cheer on the Rams from the stands, provide investments of time and treasure, and/or rally behind our students at performances and community events, your presence makes all the difference. And, if you haven’t been on campus recently, I invite you to join us for Mass, a sporting event, or one of our incredible theater productions.
This has truly been a great year to be a Ram!

ARCHDIOCESAN WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN HIGH SCHOOL?
For 86 years, Central Catholic High School has dedicated itself to providing a rigorous Catholic education to our community. This year, as we enter into our accreditation process, a review process by an accrediting organization that judges every aspect of the education that is offered, we are as focused as ever on articulating to the community what a Central Catholic education means.
In the simplest of statements, we believe that God is love. We are committed to imparting the principles central to the teaching of Jesus to inspire a life of virtue and moral integrity rooted in Catholic values.
The Holy See’s mission for Catholic schools is about making God known, loved, and served and to help students find answers to life’s seminal questions: Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going?
In Archbishop J. Michael Miller’s “The Holy See’s Teachings on Catholic Schools,” (September, 2005), he summarized five areas of Catholic identity in a Catholic school. Of those, number four states, “a school will be imbued with the Catholic Worldview. The Catholic Worldview calls for Catholic schools to include in every curricular area our Catholic
faith. This integration of the faith in all curricular areas, gradually develops every capability of every student: their intellectual, physical, psychological, moral, and religious dimensions. It is intentionally directed to the growth of the whole person.”
But we are not “just a Catholic school.” We are a Catholic archdiocesan high school, which means we bring life to the Archdiocese of Portland’s vision for the Mission of Catholic Schools, focusing on helping our students understand that they have “been created to live in a relationship of love with the Holy Trinity and that they are formed to have an active spiritual life” (Archdiocese of Portland).
This means a strong commitment to students demonstrating mastery of a curriculum that integrates a Catholic worldview throughout and that exposes them to the best of Catholic intellectual tradition. As such, all of our academic content standards directly align with our student outcomes connected to the areas of: Faithful and Just, Academic Excellence, Relational and Responsible, and Healthy and Balanced.
It also means a strong commitment to diversity, mirroring the broader world through the
richness of our racial, spiritual, neurodiverse, and socioeconomic differences. We support and empower students from all backgrounds and lived experiences. We believe the ideal learning environment recognizes and honors every individual’s unique story as inspired by God to bring good into the world.
As we move through the 2024-2025 school year, and through the accreditation process, we invite you back to campus to experience the many ways we are living out our Catholic values, whether that be attending Mass, packing food during the Week of Giving, or volunteering to share your story with our students about your experience of Christian Service.
You can check out all that is happening at Central Catholic on the new website at centralcatholichigh.org.
Over the summer, Central Catholic held its first-ever Middle School Enrichment Camp. Over three weeks and seven different camps, students explored a wide range of activities from crafting and cooking, to sneaker design, leadership, and women in sports. We can’t wait to expand the summer program next year!
CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS
On August 12, the Varsity Men’s Basketball team gathered for their OSAA 6A State Championship Ring ceremony.
The strength, fun, and skill of Ram athletics was on full display this summer as hundreds of students (ranging from third to twelfth grade) participated in one of twelve camps hosted by our coaches and players.

On August 17, Central Catholic Director of Equity and Community Engagement Melissa Lowery celebrated the 10-year anniversary of her documentary film, “Black Girl in Suburbia” at the historic Alberta Abbey. In the film, she shares her experiences growing up in a white suburb in Oregon; a powerful reminder of where we’ve been, where we are, and where we need to be in creating spaces of support, belonging, and inclusion. Catholic Schools service and cultural immersion week in the Dominican Republic
This summer a group of students, along with students from La Salle Catholic College Preparatory and Valley Catholic School, participated in a Portland Catholic Schools service and cultural immersion week in the Dominican Republic sponsored by the The Mariposa DR Foundation. Each day at the Center our students helped teach math, swimming, English, different sports, and music. Through their daily experiences, our students learned about Dominican culture, the Spanish language, courage and resilience, and what life looks like for young women in the Dominican Republic. It was a powerful and moving experience, and strong bonds of friendship were formed.
On August 14, more than 100 moms of incoming freshmen gathered for a “Welcome to Central Catholic” rooftop soirée. It was a fabulous evening filled with energy and excitement for Central Catholic and what’s ahead for the Class of 2028.
On September 20, we came together for the Holy Spirit Mass where our community sought guidance and blessings for the year ahead.
On September 3 and 4, we welcomed our students back to campus, including 240 members of the Class of 2028. This year’s freshman class is the largest class in more than a decade, representing 67 different schools; 71% of them are coming from Catholic schools, 45% are connected to a current or former student, 50% identify as Catholic, and 33% are students of color.

In July, a group of 12 Central Catholic students, along with Director of Community Ministry David Lester ’94 and faculty member Helen Simmons, traveled to the Dominican Republic through a partnership with Education Across Borders. Over the course of 13 days, our students built relationships with rural coffee farmers and Haitian immigrants directly impacting their worldview, and growing their heart for service and compassion. Through construction of two homes, educational activities, homestays with families, sports and play, our students formed lifelong bonds that will shape them into servant leaders for years to come.

SETTING UP A NAMED SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Currently there are over 130 endowed scholarships at Central Catholic High School, many of which have been created in honor or memory of loved ones. A new scholarship is established when the individual fund balance reaches or exceeds a principal balance of $25,000 and has accrued interest for a minimum of one year. Only a portion of the interest earned on the principal amount is used annually for scholarships, which allows annual awards to continue in perpetuity.

WE ARE CENTRAL CATHOLIC
The following donors made gifts between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024 in response to various efforts including, but not limited to, the Central Catholic Fund, the Parent Investment Program, the Presidents’ Dinner and Auction, and the Students 4 Students Fundraiser. The list also includes donors who made estate gifts, pledge payments, memorial gifts, and unsolicited gifts—as well as companies that matched these gifts. These donors include current students and those who are making their first gifts, and alumni going back to the Class of 1945. They also include past parents whose children graduated from Central Catholic in the 1960s and current parents who made gifts while paying full tuition.
We offer our heartfelt thanks to all who have made contributions to Central Catholic High School over the past fiscal year, both financial and in-kind. We would not be the school we are without you. Thank you for all the ways you contribute, for the role you play in the Central Catholic tradition, and for ensuring our mission continues today and into the future.
We strive to correctly recognize each of our generous donors. Please notify the Office of Advancement at 503.230.1056 or Elaine Payne at epayne@centralcatholichigh.org of any corrections or omissions. We are profoundly grateful for your support.

Patrick Chapman ’09 Returns as Athletic Director
After 11 years at the helm of Ram athletics, Laura Jaeger passed the baton to someone well-versed in the culture and success of Central Catholic sports. Patrick Chapman ‘09 returned to his alma mater as its next athletic director (AD), on July 1.
The Chapman name has been a staple in the Central Catholic halls for decades as his dad Matt ‘68, uncles Mike ‘64 and John ‘66, and brother Ricky ‘05 all paved the way for Patrick.
Growing up watching his older brother take part in cross country and track & field meets, Patrick knew upon his arrival at Central Catholic that the athletics program would be part of his high school experience. He found that niche as the manager of the boys’ basketball team and outspoken leader of the “Bleacher Bums.”
Patrick carried his love of sports and leadership into a career in education, most recently at Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton, where he served as AD prior to his appointment at Central Catholic, making significant contributions to their sports programs.
“I am humbled and ecstatic to be returning home to Central Catholic in this capacity,” Patrick said. “It is a dream come true to take on this role–I look forward to collaborating across the school and broader community to ensure a seamless transition and a championship athletics program.”
As Patrick steps into this role, he brings with him not just a wealth of experience, but also a deep understanding of what it means to be a Ram. His vision for the athletics department is one that honors our traditions while pushing us to new heights.
Ram pride was shining at the 2024 Ram Open at Glendoveer Golf and Tennis on August 2, 2024! The full course of Central Catholic alumni, parents, and friends had a sunny day of play, sharing stories and laughs along the way. Our golfers helped raise vital funds to support the Central Catholic Alumni Association Scholarship.
Congratulations to the Flight Winners and a special thank you to all of our sponsors and especially our presenting sponsor, Pacific Office Automation!

Reunions
The classes of 1954, 1964, 1974, 1984, and the classes from the 1940s celebrated their reunions in the Weston Commons on August 3, 2024. Central Catholic hosts these marquee reunions with food, drink, and photos. Much joy was spread with classmates reminiscing about the old times and catching up with one another. Msgr. Murphy ‘58 led the group in prayer and on tours of the school. Some alumni had not been back in the building for over 30 years! They were impressed to see all of the positive changes, but also happy to see so many of the nostalgic elements were still intact.
If you would like to plan a reunion that is not in the marquee years of 40, 50, 60, or 70+, please contact Dustin Daniel, Manager of Alumni Engagement at ddaniel@centralcatholichigh.org for more information.
On May 8, 2024, Dick Scherzinger ’42, the only surviving member of the Class of 1942 and Central Catholic’s “most senior” graduate, turned 101. Today Scherzinger lives independently in a retirement community in The Dalles. While a stroke inhibited his ability to do wood-carving, a skill he developed after retiring from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, he is engaged in his community, and enjoys frequent visits from his daughter, stepchildren, and grandchildren. He also practices his Catholic faith on a daily basis, a habit instilled in him by the priests and nuns who taught him at Central Catholic.
Scherzinger is the subject of an entire chapter in a new book, When Duty Called: An Oral History of Oregon’s World War II Veterans , by Alisha Hamel, available through the Oregon Historical Society Museum Store and on Amazon.
Pinder brothers, Mark ’74 , Mike ’77 , and Marshall ’81 , along with Marshall’s son Louis ’12 , displayed their Central Catholic pride at the St. Vincent de Paul golf tournament on August 16, 2024.
Sisters Kristin Jacobs ’87 and Karin Jacobs ’89 were recently inducted into the Portland State University Athletics Hall of Fame as a part of the Vikings’ 1991 softball team. The team went 43-9 on the season, reaching the final four of the NCAA Division II national tournament, eventually placing third in the nation.
Karina (Kutcher) Klein ’91 and her husband, George, celebrated their 25 th wedding anniversary on June 22, 2024, with a renewal of vows during Holy Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walla Walla, Washington. A dinner and dance reception followed.
Beth Barsotti ’99 married Herbert Medina at The Madeleine Parish on July 6, 2024.
Marianne (Bradach) ’04 and Nick Harrington ’03 shared this pic of their daughter, Hazel, (pictured center) with twins Hailey (right) and Madison (left) Manning (daughters of Anna (Lundgren) ’02 and John Manning ’01) after the girls completed one of Central Catholic’s Summer Volleyball Camps. “Central Catholic’s camps are awesome. We will for sure be back next summer.”
Brian Barkdoll ’07 and his wife, Morgan, welcomed a son, Bo Allen, on August 8, 2023.
Tyler McKinney ’07 married Cassandra Van Dyke on September 28, 2024, at Mt. Hood Organic Farms in Mt. Hood, Oregon.
Claire (Bradach) ’08 and husband Johnny Kovatch welcomed son Lake Gabriel Bradach Kovatch on May 26, 2024. Lake joins brother Hart (3)
Mary Roake ’09 and Devin Cooley married on July 13, 2024, in Eugene, Oregon.
Willy Leineweber ’11 married Bonnie Cardillo on June 22, 2024, at The Grotto in Portland, Oregon.
Connor Toyooka ’11 and his wife, Amanda, welcomed a son, Kenji Daniel, in April of this year.
Jocelyn Peterson ’15 married Luke Schiller at Camp Clark in Cloverdale, Oregon on August 24, 2024.
Kealia Rosa ’15 and Kaiao Nahale-a were married June 29, 2024, at the Leftbank Annex in Portland, Oregon.
Morgan McCurdy ’16 married Nicole Gorretta ’16 on July 20, 2024, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon.
Joey Galati ’19 and Emma Johnston ’19 were married at Holy Redeemer Church on June 14, 2024.
Lakely Doht-Barron ’23 competed for team USA at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, between August 27 and 31. Lakely was a member of the women’s 4x400 meter relay team.

ALBERT DOMINIC CORRADO ’51
November 3, 1933 - October 8, 2024
Together we mourn the loss of a Central Catholic legend. Al Corrado ’51 grew up in southwest Portland, attending St. Lawrence Grade School. His parents emigrated from Northern Italy and his father ran a grocery store and tavern. As a youngster, he dreamed of following in his dad’s footsteps.
While at Central Catholic, he took part in many activities including playing on the varsity basketball team and joining the Pep and Glee Clubs. In 1947, when Al was a freshman, he met a girl at the bus stop on her way to Holy Child Academy. Al and Sue became best friends, married in 1953, and went on to have seven children, six of whom are also Central Catholic alumni: Nick ‘72, Greg ‘74, Chris ‘77, Matt ‘79, Peter ‘80, Andy ‘84, and Missy, St. Mary’s ‘75.
Active in the founding of Portland’s St. John Fisher Parish, Al served on and chaired boards at Serra Club, March Of Dimes, St. John Fisher, Central Catholic High School, and the University of Portland, to name a few. A giant in Catholic charitable giving, his lasting impact can be seen in our Corrado Family Library at Central Catholic, the Corrado Family Center at St. John Fisher, and the Corrado Hall dormitory at the University of Portland, among other investments.
We were proud to call Al family and celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy he leaves.

Jane Elizabeth (McNulty) Towle, Central Catholic’s former Attendance and Bookstore Manager, Teacher Assistant, and unofficial school nurse from 1997 to 2022, passed away on August 3, 2024.
Jane grew up in the Laurelhurst neighborhood and graduated from Marycrest High School in 1969 before going on to attend Gonzaga University. Soon after graduation, she married Terry Towle and together they raised four sons, Joe ’95, Ben ’98, Dan ’00 and Michael ’04. Jane loved Central Catholic, and in addition to her regular duties, orchestrated the Christmas Bazaar for faculty and staff and sold tickets for hundreds of theater and athletic events. Jane is fondly remembered for her kindness, her humility, her wicked sense of humor, and for exemplifying what it means to have a heart for others.
Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them.
