A YEAR IN REVIEW Central Catholic High School 2016-2017 Presidentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Report

As I reflect on these first few months as the new president of this incredible community and school, I am filled with deep gratitude. I am grateful for my predecessor, Tony Leineweber ‘62, who served his alma mater with great distinction. He exemplified the type of leader you would expect a Central Catholic alumnus to be. Grace, compassion, character, wisdom, and passion are just some of the words I would use to describe the type of leadership he provided the school he cares so deeply about, and it is better for his service. He showed such great care and support in our transition, working to ensure the many facets of the role were reviewed and organized, another example of his commitment to the school. I am grateful for the search committee and the Board of Directors who have entrusted me with this role and afforded me and my family the opportunity to become a part of this very special community. Witnessing their commitment and support of the school is truly inspiring and provides great hope for an incredible future. I am grateful to our principal, John Garrow ‘76, and all the administrators, faculty, and staff who have welcomed me with open arms. Each day they show genuine care for each and every student and their development. Their passion and commitment to helping each student become the best version of themselves is remarkable. I am grateful to the many alumni and parents who have reached out to share just how much Central Catholic means to them and their families. To say it’s been overwhelming would not be an exaggeration. I think whoever first said, “When selecting your high school, it’s not just a fouryear decision, it’s a lifelong one,” was talking about Central Catholic. The passion is contagious and provides great encouragement for an exciting future for the school. I am grateful for the students who provide such optimism and hope for our community and its future. While our society is undoubtedly faced with many important and pressing issues, I am reassured by our students. When I walk into the school hallways between bells, into the cafeteria at lunch, the Weston Commons before classes start, or when I attend assemblies in the East Gym, I witness intelligent, hardworking, grace-filled, optimistic, compassionate young men and women. Like the many alumni before them, they will bring with them into their future lives the values and lessons learned as a student at Central Catholic and we will all be better because of it. I am, of course, profoundly grateful to our Msgr. Murphy ’58 who has been a pastor, friend, mentor, and coach to me. There is simply not a better, more dedicated, or passionate Ram to learn from and lean on. I am grateful to be a part of this very special community and school. It has taken almost no time to see how important it is, not only to our city, but wherever our alumni live and work. I am excited for our future and am certain it is very, very bright. Gratefully,

Giving Back Cheri and Gary Swoboda are parents of Ryan ‘99 and Tim ’02. A few months ago they dropped in to see Msgr. Murphy and wrote the school a check large enough to almost pay a student’s full tuition. We asked Cheri why they sent their sons to Central Catholic and what compelled them to make such a generous gift these 15 years later. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity. Why Central Catholic High School? We looked at the other Catholic high schools here, and when we came into Central Catholic, there was just something about it. It felt like home! When you walk in the doors you just feel like there is a lot of pride. You feel it in the teachers and administration. We lived on the west side of town, so this was a real commitment to us in the fact we were going to rearrange our lives in order to get the boys here. We made the commitment. There were a handful of people that were already going, so everyone could carpool and that was a godsend. There was another boy on our block and his parents really wanted to send him to Central Catholic. I think it was mainly because we had talked it up so much. They really didn’t want him going to public school and their big question was, “How do we get him there?” By then Ryan was driving, so he took him. Everybody works together. It’s kind of a cliché that you say, “It’s like a family,” but it is like a family at Central Catholic! Everybody helps one another and you figure it out. I think Central Catholic has a great mix of academics and life skills. So when students leave, they have both to fall back on. And the teachers deeply care. It’s not a job to them, it’s a love of their life that they want to give back, and that’s why they are there. Why this donation now? We got almost to the end - Tim’s senior year - and we had some issues come up. At this point, we didn’t want to take him out. I went to Fr. Murphy and said, “I don’t know what I’m going to do,” and he said, “Don’t worry about it. Your son is going to stay here and you don’t have to worry about it.” Thankfully we received the financial aid we needed. My husband and I both believe that if someone does something for you, you should try to give something back. We kept saying all these years we wanted to pay it back. We also felt that because someone was nice enough to help us, we should try to give more than what we had received. Obviously, tuition is a lot more now than what it was at that time. If you feel like you can help one child, one student, and it makes a difference, that’s all that matters.

A Year In Review 2016-2017

ACADEMICS Central Catholic High School strives to educate the whole person while maintaining a rigorous college prep curriculum. We believe in holding our students to the highest standards in an effort to prepare them for post-secondary endeavors. Central Catholic offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses and continues a strong partnership with Portland Community College, offering dual credit opportunities for select courses. At the same time, we recognize the benefits of inclusiveness and make every effort to meet the needs of an academically and socioeconomically diverse student body. • In 2017, four students completed their first year in the Rams Program. The primary goal of this unique program is to provide an inclusive Catholic education to high school students with developmental and intellectual disabilities. • For the sixth year in a row, the Constitution Team participated in the We the People state competition where they placed fifth. • Overall, 215 students took 398 AP exams in nineteen subject areas. New course offerings this past year included AP Biology and AP Psychology. • National AP Scholar Gavin McPherson ‘17 took and passed nine AP exams with a score of 4 or higher. • Sixteen students were designated “AP Scholar with Distinction,” scoring 3 or higher on five or more exams. • Fourteen students were named “AP Scholar with Honor,” scoring 3 or higher on four exams. • Fourteen students were named “AP Scholar,” scoring 3 or higher on three exams. • This fall, 99% of the Class of 2017 headed off to college. Students are attending schools all over the country and the world including Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, George Washington University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Northwestern University, Trinity College Dublin, and Vanderbilt University. • The Parent Association awarded grants to different departments to enrich the academic learning experience of our students. Funds this year brought bee hives to campus, allowed 160 students to attend a field trip to the Oregon State Hospital and Museum of Mental Health, and launched a student-produced wall mural in one of our hallways.

CAMPUS MINISTRY Campus Ministry is a coordinated and integrated ministry grounded in scripture and Catholic tradition, working with all Central Catholic programs to develop a community of faith, compassion, and justice that continually pursues spiritual growth and full human development. Throughout the year, students are given the opportunity to exercise their faith through class- and school-wide liturgies, retreats, and religious curriculum. Since the inception of the Christian Service program in 1994, Central Catholic students have performed over 325,000 hours of service for the local and global community. • For the first time, Campus Ministry partnered with The Madeleine Parish to offer confirmation classes to our students on late start mornings. Seventeen students were confirmed in May through this pilot program. • Last year, nine all-school liturgies were celebrated with the Central Catholic community. Seventeen priests from across the Portland area concelebrated the Mass of our patron, Christ the King. • A variety of retreat experiences were offered to our students to develop their relationship with God and their awareness and acceptance of self and others. New this year was the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit Retreat. This multi-class level retreat was an overnight experience for students who wanted to engage in a deeper encounter with Christ and the Holy Spirit. • Student leadership for our community Masses was very strong this year. Seventysix students were Liturgical Ministers, serving as extraordinary ministers, altar servers, and lectors. Thirty-nine students lent their talents to God Squad, which provides music at each Mass. • In January, our Social Justice Mass was a collaborative effort with the Imago Dei Community to present an ecumenical experience of worship. The Imago Dei worship team led the music and their pastor, Eric Knox, shared a reflection with our community after communion. • We completed the twelfth year of Person for Others. This weekly award increases awareness of the positive actions of our students. Twenty-six students were acknowledged this year for their kindness within our community.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES Student Activities benefits the Central Catholic community in multiple ways; it provides entertaining and educational experiences for students, it helps raise funds for reputable organizations such as Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, and it contributes to an enjoyable environment for students, staff, and families. Student Activities works to bring our community together in fun, innovative ways that promote teamwork and camaraderie. With over 50 clubs to choose from, our goal is that every student finds a way to be challenged, be themselves, and belong! • Students shared their musical talents with our community during four Open Mic Nights throughout the year. The final event took place off-campus at Imago Dei Community with more than 32 acts! • The Battle of Brilliance saw more teams join the quiz bowl in its second year. Teams of teachers and students battled in diverse subjects to show who was a Renaissance man or woman and who was simply a dilettante. • 2017 marked Central Catholic’s 34th year of participation in Portland’s Rose Festival. Our community selected Mahlet (Mahi) Wondayehu ’17 as our princess. The court also included Whitney Warth ’17 and Annelise Phelps ’17. • The Department of Theatre Arts presented two sold-out productions: Charlie’s Aunt in the fall and All Shook Up in the spring. In total, more than 75 students participated in these productions, either onstage or behind the scenes. • Students organized Central Catholic’s first Alternative Transportation Day. Students, staff, and faculty ditched their cars for bikes, scooters, and just plain ol’ hoofin’ it. • Our Jazz Band took third place at the 53rd annual University of Portland Jazz Festival. The event showcases excellent student musicians from around the Pacific Northwest. • This past year, more than 75 students participated in local and regional conferences focused on diversity and inclusion. Two highlights included the Asian American Summit in Seattle and Inclusion Fusion in Portland.

ATHLETICS Athletics play a positive role at Central Catholic, both on and off the field. Students involved in both school sponsored and club sports practice respect, commitment, and perseverance at every event while the students in the stands demonstrate good sportsmanship and spirit. We strive to foster an environment where our students, regardless of where their passions lie, work their hardest to achieve their goals and display the highest level of sportsmanship. • Boys’ Cross Country won their fifth consecutive state championship and tenth title in the program’s history. • Volleyball added a banner to the East Gym with their state title win over Clackamas High School. • Our teams won Mt. Hood Conference (MHC) league championships in Boys’ Cross Country, Girls’ Cross Country (co-champions), Football, Volleyball, Boys’ Soccer, Boys’ Track and Field (co-champions), and Boys’ Tennis (co-champions). • Two coaches received MHC Coach of the Year honors, Dave Frank for Boys’ Cross Country and Robyn McGillis for Girls’ Cross Country. • Austin Hill ’18, Eric Brecht ’18, Korbin Williams ’18, and Will Mundy ’18 broke the school record in the 4x400 relay! Their time was 3:21.92. Sydney Fisher ’18, Hayley Harrison ’19, Amara Christensen ’20, and Emma Pitzer ’18 broke the school record in the Distance Medley Relay with a 13:02.57 finish. • Dave Frank and Rick Lorenz were presented Oregon Athletic Association Coach of the Year Awards. • Maddie Batiste ’17 was named the Oregon Sports Awards Prep Volleyball Player of the Year. • These student-athletes were awarded MHC Player of the Year honors: • Mike McCausland ’17: Boys’ Cross Country • Eden White ’18: Girls’ Soccer, Defensive Player • Joseph Hammond ’17: Boys’ Soccer, Offensive Player • Maddie Batiste ’17: Volleyball • Joey Schwartz ’17: Boys’ Tennis

ALUMNI We are immensely grateful for the high level of support we receive from our alumni and are so proud of what our Rams have accomplished beyond Central Catholic. Our tight knit community is teeming with individuals working to ensure the best environment for our current and future students through donations of time, money, and items. Last year, the Alumni Association funded three scholarships for incoming freshmen for the 2017-2018 school year, over 1,150 alumni made monetary donations, and 20 alumni were employed at Central Catholic. Once a Ram, always a Ram! • The Eighteenth Annual Women’s Wine Tour was held in October. The women visited two wineries in Hood River: Cathedral Ridge and Phelps Creek. Thanks to our presenting sponsors, DDI Benefits (Dena Dooney ‘88) and Suzie Puetz Photography. • We had an amazing turnout at the Ram Open in August where 224 golfers battled the heat wave to vie for the championship trophy. Thank you to our sponsor Tom Hughes and adidas for providing swag for our tee bags, raffle prizes, and polo shirts. • We welcomed the classes of 1947, 1957, and 1967 for their 70th, 60th, and 50th reunions, respectively. Graduates and their guests gathered in the cafeteria for a memorable reunion dinner. Each class posed for a group photo in the Maybelle Clark McDonald Courtyard and continued making new memories with old friends. • This year, we inducted 24 individuals and two teams into the Hall of Fame. In January, we gathered to celebrate and recognize the lasting impact their accomplishments have had on Central Catholic, our community, and the world. The inductees were honored in three categories: Athletic, Civic, and Special Achievement. • We welcomed back football players to an Alumni Football Night at Hillsboro Stadium. The 2006 team was honored for being the first team to win a Mt. Hood Conference title. They started a winning tradition that we are still defending today.

2016-2017 Annual Appeal Challenge Match Exceeded! Joe Weston ’56 and the OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation leveraged a Challenge Match to encourage new and increased gifts to the 2016-2017 Annual Appeal. Throughout its history, Central Catholic High School has maintained a deep commitment to providing a college preparatory Catholic education to students regardless of their family’s ability to meet tuition requirements. The school’s General Endowment Fund provides a sound financial foundation, which in turn provides significant scholarship money and tuition assistance for students in the future. Only a portion of the earnings on the principal amount is used annually for scholarships and tuition assistance, making this a perpetual gift. The Point System

Central Catholic maintains a partnership system between co-curricular programs in the school, volunteer forces of current parents, and the formal structure of the Development Office to create a winning situation for all. By creating volunteer opportunities for parents to earn points for their designated program, Central Catholic was able to raise more funds overall. Each program received the funding they needed without organizing and running individual fundraisers. The Endowment Fund is perpetual and only a portion of the interest earned on the principal of the fund is used to provide scholarships and tuition assistance each year.
