CBC HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES SET FOR FEB. 20-21

Central Baptist College will host its annual Homecoming activities on Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21.

Events will begin on Friday evening with a Chili Cook-off to be held outside the A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. Student groups, alumni and local businesses are encouraged to participate in this tailgate style event. The event will be free with chili and hot dogs available, plus games on the lawn for all ages.

The fun continues as both the Lady Mustangs and Mustangs take on Oklahoma Wesleyan. The women’s game begins at 5:30 p.m. and the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, activities begin at 10 a.m. with the Half Century Club Inductions in the Mitchell Lecture Hall of the Watkins Academic Building. Graduates from 1963 to 1965 will be inducted into the Half Century Club.

The CBC Alumni Luncheon will be held at noon in the Dining Hall of the Mabee Student Service Building. Awards will be given to two

alumni who have demonstrated incredible service to their community, their careers and to the Lord. The Distinguished Alumnus of the Year will be presented to Phylis Hoffmann, and the Outstanding Young Alumnus of the Year will be presented to Luis Ortega.

Following the luncheon, there will be a Homecoming Queens’ Tea to be held in the CBC Community Room at 1:30 p.m. All former Homecoming Queens are invited to attend this event.

An Impact Team reunion will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Story Library Café 52. Bro. Jeff Riddle is excited to welcome back all Impact Team members for a time of food, fellowship and fun.

The highlight of the day begins in the A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse at 3 p.m. with the Lady Mustangs taking on Haskell. The 2015 Homecoming Court will be announced after the women’s game and will be followed by the Mustangs going head to head with Haskell. ✝

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT CBC UPDATE So much has happened since the last issue of the Connecting Point newsletter that I could not possibly give you a complete update. Here are some of the highlights: CBC is blessed this year with enrollment growth! When enrollment for the fall 2014 semester ended it tied the alltime record enrollment for the institution at 858 students (fall 2011) and is an increase of 3.61 percent from the fall 2013 enrollment of 832. Final enrollment figures include 461 traditional students which is a 4.54 percent increase from fall 2013 enrollment of 441 students.

On-campus student housing increased over 20% with 172 students living on the CBC campus. Dickson Hall, the first new housing project on the CBC campus in 50 years, opened its doors in August 2014. The 150-bed, three-story residence hall is occupied to near capacity.

If you were not able to join us for the opening of Dickson Hall on Sept. 26, it was a wonderful event! We were so pleased to honor David and Shelley Dickson and allow hundreds of CBC supporters the opportunity to get a first-hand look inside this beautiful addition to the CBC campus. The construction of Dickson Hall marks the completion of all of the projects in Phase 1 of Vision 2020: A Miracle in the Making capital campaign.

On Sept. 23, CBC announced that for the sixth year in a row the college was named to the Military Friendly® Schools list by Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. The 2015 Military Friendly® Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. CBC has a strong commitment to our men and women in the military and will continue to do whatever it takes to honor their service

to our country, and we are so pleased to once again be given this prestigious designation.

The number one question I am receiving these days is “what’s next?” Well, that is a question that a team of individuals is working to answer. On Sept. 9 & 10, a group of 25, including administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni, board members and community business leaders met off-site to begin work on a revised strategic plan for CBC. We made great progress toward identifying the direction of the College for the next three to five years. We are now working to complete that plan and use it to revise the master facilities plan that has guided Vision 2020 thus far. I look forward to sharing the College’s strategic plan and revised master facilities plan with you soon!

God has provided more than $16 million toward our $21 million goal for Vision 2020. We would not be where we are without the prayers and financial support of so many of you who are reading this right now! Please continue to remember the College in your prayers as this a critical time for planning and determining the direction of the College for the next several years. I am humbled by the work that God is doing at CBC. Thank you again for your continued support!

NEW ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP CBC President Terry Kimbrow recently received a check for $19,795 to establish the Wassell L. and Jean Burgess Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship was established to support Bible majors who plan to go into the preaching ministry. Bro. Burgess was a longtime pastor at Springhill Baptist Church in Springhill, Ark., and also served as President of CBC from 1970 to 1977. ✝ Pictured from left to right are Bro. CBC NEWS CBC ANNOUNCES MUSTANG ADVANTAGE The Innovative Program is Taking the Fear Out of Student Loans Beginning in fall 2015, CBC will provide the Mustang Advantage, a loan repayment assistance program, to all new traditional students, which includes incoming freshmen and transfer students.

The Mustang Advantage program provides substantial assistance to students and parents, helping with up to 100 percent of student and parent PLUS loans. Offered through a partnership with the LRAP Association, the Mustang Advantage program will be provided at no cost to students or families and provides financial assistance to graduates who fall below certain income thresholds. The assistance will continue until the graduate’s income rises to a level of financial sufficiency, or until the loans are completely paid off.

CBC RANKS AS A “BEST REGIONAL COLLEGE”

BY U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT CBC has been ranked as a “Best Regional College” in the South, according to the 2015 U.S. Best College rankings by U.S. News & World Report. CBC ranks 69th in this category among regional universities in the South. Over the past three years, CBC improved from a ranking of 107.

According to the US. News and World Report, ranked colleges focus on the graduate experience and offer a broad range of programs in the liberal arts in fields such as business, nursing and education. The U.S. News & World Report 2015 Best Colleges guidebook includes rankings of 1,800 institutions nationwide. The rankings are based on peer assessment, retention and graduation rate of student body, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving. ✝

EDUCATION NEWS CONWAY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION ENDORSES AND PLEDGES TO PACE PROGRAM At the Conway Business Expo in October, Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Brad Lacy presented a $25,000 pledge for CBC’s Professional Adult College Education (PACE) program from the Conway Development Corporation. Lacy made the announcement while giving an update on Conway2025: A Plan for Conway’s Future.

One sector of the plan is Keep Conway Learning which focuses on education initiatives in Conway. Lacy recognized the value of CBC’s PACE (Professional Adult College Education) program. Lacy said, “We have an avenue right here in Conway, through the PACE Program at CBC, to meet this critical need.” He touted the growth and success of CBC and PACE and the benefits of adding more prepared workers to the workforce.

Lacy gave some startling statistics regarding students in Arkansas who have some college credit but no bachelor’s degree. On the state level, the number he provided was an overwhelming 450,000 plus. Even in Faulkner County, over 17,000 adult learners have earned some credit hours, 8,000 of those in the city proper, but for various reasons did not persist to graduation. Lacy highlighted on PowerPoint “The Power of Education,” giving statistics relative to the success of those who earn the minimum of a bachelor’s degree. ✝

MILITARY FRIENDLY® SCHOOLS HONOR AWARDED TO CBC Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has named CBC to the coveted Military Friendly® Schools list. The 2015 list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students while ensuring their success on campus.

More than 1,500 colleges, universities and trade schools were designated with this honor for exhibiting leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. These schools have world-class programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility and other services to those who served.

CBC President Terry Kimbrow said, “It is an honor to be included on the Military Friendly® Schools list for the sixth year in a row. We have a strong commitment to our men and women in the military and will

continue to do whatever it takes to honor their service to our country.”

CBC offers an Associate of Science degree in Military Technologies with locations in Conway and North Little Rock at Camp Robinson. To admitted students, CBC also offers the following benefits to service men and women: full-time Veteran advisers on staff, process enrollment certifications for VA GI Bill Education, Federal Tuition Assistance, tuition discounts for qualifying soldiers, free evaluations of AARTS/SMARTS military transcript and participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

In addition to the Military Technologies Associate’s degree, CBC offers eight other degree programs in the Professional Adult College Education program and three online degrees.

Currently, at CBC, 16 percent of the traditional and PACE/Online student population are military. ✝

HOFFMANN AND ORTEGA TO BE RECOGNIZED AT ALUMNI LUNCHEON The Distinguished Alumnus Award is presented to an individual who has served their community for more than 20 years. This individual demonstrates a legacy of service, and continues to serve in a multitude of ways that demonstrate interest in CBC. We are pleased to announce that this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award is Phylis Hoffmann.

Hoffmann graduated in 1964, with an Associate of Arts in Business from CBC and began working for Virco as a data processor after graduating. In 1976, she came to work at CBC as the Assistant Registrar & Admissions Assistant, becoming the Registrar in 1998. During her time as an employee, Phylis received the Employee of the Year award in 1999, and was a member of the Arkansas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

The Outstanding Young Alumnus is awarded to an individual who has been instrumental in the advancement of

their chosen profession primarily within the past two years.

This individual demonstrates the love of service within the community and continues to show interest in CBC. This year the recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award is Luis Ortega.

Luis graduated from CBC with a B.A. in Bible/Pastoral Phylis Hoffmann, Distinguished Alumnus Emphasis and is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity.

Luis serves on staff at Lifeword Media Ministries as Director of Programming; the Information Technologies leader for the departments of the Baptist Missionary Association and serves on staff at Antioch Baptist Church as the pastor of the Latino/Hispanic congregation.

Luis is a member of the Conway Noon Lions Club, the executive board for the Community Action Program for Central Arkansas (CAPCA), The Faulkner County Day School board, the Ministry Center board and is a civilian Luis Ortega, Outstanding Young Alumnus volunteer for the Conway Police Department. ✝

Karen & Tom Mitchell (1966) Chenal Valley Baptist Church in Little Rock, Ark. honored Pastor Tom Mitchell and his wife, Karen, with a reception in September celebrating fifty years of Ministry.

Lamar Eslinger (2007) Lamar Eslinger is employed by Pepsi Co. During his time at CBC he was the Captain of the Men’s Basketball team, after CBC he played semi-professional basketball in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Barbara (Grimes) Goswick (1972) Barbara (Grimes) Goswick was honored with the CFO Lifetime Achievement Award for her work at the University of Arkansas System, presented by Arkansas Business.

Rev. Stephen Francis (1975) Rev. Stephen Francis, 67, of Jackson died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Giardeau. He and Sandra Kaye (Brown) were married in 1968 in Conway, Ark. During his ministry he pastored Baptist Churches in Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi.

Paul W. Roberts (1997) Paul W. Roberts was appointed Vice President for Information Integrations and Chief Information Officer while retaining his title as Dean of Library Services at Oklahoma Baptist University.

LOWRY TO WORK WITH CBC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Meagan Lowry has joined the Public Relations Office at CBC as a Public Relations Officer and Meagan Lowry will serve as a liaison with the CBC Alumni Association. Lowry will work with the Association on planning Homecoming activities, alumni events and gatherings and promoting alumni association membership. Lowry is a 2012 graduate of CBC with an Associates of Arts in General Education, and a 2014 graduate of the University of Central Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations. Lowry is a native of Kilgore, Texas and is a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Conway. ✝ 10

Mary (Raines) Kinder (2010) Mary (Raines) Kinder and her husband, Dale, are parents of a baby girl born July 8, 2014 in Virginia. This is grandfather Steve Raines’ first grandchild.

Forrest Carvajal (2010) Forrest Carvajal passed his National Certification Examination for a Registered Occupational Therapist and Certified Occupational Therapy assistants.

Kursty Oswald (2013) Kursty Oswald was recently accepted into medical school at Virginia Tech University.

Nathan Brewer (2013) Nathan Brewer and his wife, Lynzie, are proud parents of a baby boy, John Braxton, born September 29, 2014 in Conway, Ark. Nathan and Lynzie also welcomed two other children into their family this year: Emilee (3), and Gabe (11 months).

Christen Kirchner (2014) Christen Kirchner was named the Graduate Assistant Coach for the SAU Lady Muleriders softball program.

Cory Duke (2012) Cory Duke has been hired as the new Trinity Christian Head Baseball Coach. Duke played for the CBC Mustangs his junior and senior year.

Laura (Waymire) Harrod (2013) Laura (Waymire) Harrod has joined the CBC Library Staff as a Library Clerk and is in the process of earning a degree from the University of Central Arkansas.

MUSTANG ATHLETICS CBC NAMES NEW SOCCER COACHES

CBC announced in August the hiring of Peter Smith as the new Head Men’s Soccer Coach and Tasha Flynn as the CBC Head Women’s Soccer Coach.

Smith previously served as Director of Coaching for the Arkansas Rush Soccer Club in Conway, Ark. He has also served as Head Coach at the Little Rock Futbol Club, as an Assistant Coach with Lyon College in Batesville, Ark. and as Director of Operations of the David Beckham Academy in Los Angeles, Calif.

Smith played for Lyon College for four years and is a graduate of Lyon College with a B.S. in Business Administration and Finance and a B.A. in Economics.

Flynn most recently has been working in New Jersey for the New York Red Bulls Training Program as a Youth Academy Coach. Flynn worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Central Arkansas and played soccer at Lyon College.

Flynn received her B.S. in Exercise and Movement Science from Missouri State University and her master’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Central Arkansas. ✝

The CBC Athletic Department has a new support organization to enhance and promote Mustang athletics. The CBC Mustang Booster Club was formed in the fall of 2014. The organization has met several times and has elected officers to assist with promoting Mustang athletics The CBC Mustang Club exists to aid the Mustang teams, coaches and student-athletes. This is accomplished by promoting the Mustang events to increase game attendance, volunteer and financial support, to produce outstanding student-athletes and Mustang teams. It will also help with equipment purchases, facility improvements, personnel and post-season competition.

There are benefits to being in the Mustang Club. There are three levels to choose from, white, gray and blue. The white level is $50 and offers a membership card for one All Sports Season Pass and a Mustang Club auto decal valued at $80.

The gray level is $500 and includes white benefits plus name recognition at cbcmustangs.com (fully tax deductible). The blue level is $1,000 and provides white and gray level offers, plus an All Sports Group Season Pass for four ($300 value) and Sport Specific game day announcements ($400 value). There are also volunteer and corporate involvement opportunities for the Mustang Club upon request!
