Central Baptist College Update

W

HAT’S NEXT FOR CENTRAL

BAPTIST COLLEGE? That question frequently occupies my thoughts. Many of you have asked me the same question. As you read this issue of the Connecting Point, a 25-member Strategic Planning Team (SPT) is seeking God’s guidance for the answers to that question.

Two years ago, a similar group met for two days to begin work on a revised Strategic Plan for CBC. We made great progress toward identifying the priorities of the College for the next three to five years. We are now pulling several members of the one original group back together, and adding some new individuals, to renew our focus on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The SPT includes administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni, board members and local business leaders. The completion of a comprehensive strategic plan is vital as we seek to further the mission of the College. The Strategic Plan will then serve as a guide as we work with our architect to complete a revised Campus Facilities Master Plan.

Please pray for this group of men and women.

Pray for focus, wisdom and discernment as

they undertake this important task. But most importantly, pray for the continuance of the transformational work of God at Central Baptist College. After all, transforming students’ lives is the heart of our mission.

Central Baptist College Named to Victory Media’s 2017 Military Friendly® Schools List

C

ENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE HAS ANNOUNCED THAT IT has earned the 2017 Military Friendly® School designation by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs®, STEM Jobs and Military Spouse. First published in 2009, Military Friendly® Schools is the most comprehensive, powerful resource for veterans today. Each year, the list of Military Friendly® Schools is provided to service members and their families, helping them select the best college, university or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. More than 1,600 schools participated in the 2017 survey; 1,160 were awarded with the designation. Ratings methodology, criteria and weightings were determined by Victory Media with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for Student Retention, Graduation, Job Placement, Loan Repayment, Persistence (Degree Advancement or Transfer) and Loan Default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

CBC President Terry Kimbrow said, “It is an honor to be included on the Military Friendly® Schools list for the eighth year in a row. We have a long tradition of working with students who serve or have served our country. We will continue to do whatever it takes to honor their service.” Currently, at CBC, 14 percent of the institution’s total student population is comprised of students from various branches of the U.S. Military.

CBC offers an Associate of Science degree in Military Technologies at locations in Conway and in North Little Rock at Camp Robinson. To admitted students, CBC also offers the following benefits to our service men and women: fulltime veteran advisers on staff, process enrollment certifications for VA GI Bill Education, Federal Tuition Assistance, tuition discounts of up to 25 percent for qualifying soldiers, free evaluations of AARTS/SMARTS military transcripts and participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

In addition to the Military Technologies associate degree, CBC offers more than 40 degree programs. Twelve of these degree programs are offered in the Professional Adult College Education (PACE) program, and six are online. The PACE program offers the working adult the opportunity to work fulltime and obtain their college degree.

CBC Adds Church Administration Degree

C

ENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE HAS

added a Bachelor of Science in Church Administration to its list of Professional Adult College Education (PACE) degree programs. Starting in the spring of 2017, the Church Administration degree will help to prepare students to manage the business and administrative aspects of running a church.

The degree is designed around upperlevel courses with an emphasis in business and human resource management and church leadership. Additionally, the student will study accounting, computer applications and Christian doctrine in lower-level courses.

The flexibility of the degree plan allows the student, via choice of elective coursework, to prepare for an entry-level position in church and organizational management, promotion in the field, entry into a graduate program or even law school.

According to Chad Linn, PACE Department Chair and Director of Online Studies at CBC, “This degree bridges the gap between clergy and business staff by properly training nonpastoral or even pastoral servants. We need to equip churches in this area so that clergy are not overwhelmed or taken by surprise with issues outside of spiritual guidance.”

Courses will be offered online and in the classroom and are completed in five-week blocks similar to other non-traditional classes.

Dinner on Monday, Oct. 24, 2016. The purpose of the event was to recognize the 57 endowed scholarship funds at CBC and to allow the donors to meet the scholarship recipients.

CBC President Terry Kimbrow thanked all of the donors for their investment to the mission of CBC and highlighted the importance of endowed scholarships to continue to transform lives through education that integrates Christian faith and academic excellence. †

Ronald Morgan Endowed Scholarship Established

ENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE ANNOUNCES THE ESTABLISHMENT

of The Ronald Morgan Endowed Scholarship. The fund was established by an anonymous donor desiring to honor the ministry of Bro. Morgan, who currently serves as the Pastor of First Baptist Church of Springhill, La. Priority in awarding the Ronald Morgan Endowed Scholarship will be given to Bible majors planning to enter the preaching ministry who are active members of First Baptist Church of Springhill, La., and then to Bible majors planning to enter the preaching ministry who are active members of a Baptist Missionary Association of America (BMAA) church.

The Ronald Morgan Endowed Scholarship will join the more than 60 endowed scholarship funds in existence at Central Baptist College. These

combined funds represent more than $2,000,000 in contributions. Endowed scholarships serve as a lasting tribute, as scholarships are awarded from the interest earned from each fund. This means that the principal will never be spent; only the interest will be awarded as scholarships. Scholarships are awarded by vote of the CBC Scholarship Committee, taking into account the qualifications and eligibility of the applicants, as detailed in the scholarship agreement.

Contributions to the Ronald Morgan Endowed Scholarship Fund can be sent to Central Baptist College, 1501 College Avenue, Conway, AR 72034. Checks should be made payable to Central Baptist College with “Ronald Morgan Endowed Scholarship” indicated on the memo line. LEVEN STUDENTS WERE SELECTED TO BE MEMBERS of the 2016-2017 President’s Leadership Council class. The PLC Program is a leadership training program which introduces students to leadership principles through the use of books, guest lectures and handson experiences that allow students to apply the principles learned. In order to complete the PLC program, students must adhere to an attendance policy, participate in four outside activities, serve as an official CBC ambassador for at least two CBC sponsored events, and complete a class project.

Cody “Gracey” Miller WINTER 2016

For their class project, the 2016-2017 President’s Leadership Council class has chosen to establish the Cody ‘Gracey’ Miller Endowed Scholarship. On Friday night, August 12, Cody ‘Gracey’ Miller, a CBC student from Forrest City, Ark., was killed in a vehicle accident on Dave Ward Drive in Conway. Cody was a member of the CBC Mustangs Junior Varsity Baseball Team and was a member of Student Orientation Staff. Cody was preparing to begin his second year at CBC. The goal to fully endow this fund is $10,000. The PLC class announced this project to the student body during the November 16 chapel service, and several activities are planned for the spring 2017 semester to meet their fundraising goal.

OUR CBC STUDENTS RECENTLY TRAVELED TO LITTLE ROCK TO PARTICIPATE IN THE Arkansas Student Leadership Forum October 13-15.

The purpose of this event was to provide an opportunity for student leaders at Arkansas colleges and universities to interact with state leaders in an examination of “servant leadership” as demonstrated by Jesus of Nazareth. Student recommendations were submitted, and students entering their sophomore, junior and senior years were then asked to complete an application.

Hawk to Focus on Admissions in Texas Cassie Hawk has joined the Admissions Department at CBC as a Personal Admissions Officer for out-of-state students specifically focusing on north and northeast Texas. Hawk received a bachelor’s degree in English from Central Baptist College in May 2016.

During her time at CBC, Hawk was involved in many activities and clubs, including the Residence Life team, Student Orientation staff, CBC Choir, Student Activities Board and the Diamond Darlins.

Hawk is a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Conway, Ark., where she currently serves as a middle school ministry volunteer and a leader in the college ministry, Perspective. Hawk is a native of Hesperia, Calif.

Gore to Speak at Alumni Luncheon Kyle Gore graduated from Central Baptist College in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies and Recreational Leadership. After graduation, Kyle began to work at Pine Cove Christian Camps in Tyler, Texas. He is now the men’s director at the high school camp called Shores, where he is in charge of male discipleship and development. Kyle and his wife, Erica, had their first baby, Evelyn Lee, in September of 2015. †

Johnson, Bowen and Ramsey to be Recognized at Homecoming Judy Johnson

T

HE CENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE’S alumni board is pleased to announce the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award as Judy Johnson for her service to the community for more than 20 years and her legacy of service to CBC. Judy has strong CBC ties. She attended Central Baptist in 1965, and her father, Charles Strong, was the head of the English Department. Judy married Uriel Johnson, a CBC alum, in November of 1966. Both of Judy’s children, Jason and Clif Johnson, are CBC alum as well. After leaving CBC, Judy attended Arkansas State Teachers College and graduated from Baptist Medical Center School of Nursing in 1968. She is currently employed by St. Vincent’s Infirmary as a Registered Nurse, First Assistant in the Operating Room. Judy was honored by the board of St. Vincent with the establishment of the John Jones-Judy Johnson Endowed WINTER 2016

The Outstanding Young Alumnus is awarded to an individual who has been instrumental in the advancement of their chosen profession primarily within the last few years. This year’s recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award is Jordan Bowen.

The alumni board is proud to announce that Chris Ramsey is the recipient of the Mustang Community Impact Award.

Jordan was born in Oklahoma City to Kevin and Vicki Bowen.

At a young age, Jordan surrendered his life to Lord and says that his parents love for the Lord is what prompted him to accept Jesus Christ as his Savior. Throughout his life, his love and devotion to Christ deepened, and as a teenager, he surrendered to the ministry and began to preach. Because of this calling, Jordan chose to

Chris currently serves as the Chief Learning Officer at The Center for Children and Families, a statewide non-profit agency in Monroe, La. Ramsey volunteers in his local church as a teaching pastor and elder. Along with his wife, Dr. Valerie Ramsey, Chris operates a Christian counseling and coaching business offering lifegiving guidance to leaders, ministers, groups and individuals. †

Elder and Walthall Join CBC, Reed Moves to Development Britni Elder has been hired as Director of Human Resources at CBC. The Director of Human Resources works under the direction of the VP Finance to develop sound, effective, well-documented and readily understood human resource policies and procedures.

Elder received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Arkansas State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.

Elder is a member of New Life Church in Conway where she serves as a life group leader and a missions leader. She currently serves on the board of directors for Deliver Hope. Elder and her husband, Steve, reside in Conway along with their three children.

Amy Reed has joined the Development Office at Central Baptist College. Reed most recently served as the Director of Enrollment for Non-Traditional Programs at CBC. She is a 2015 graduate of the CBC PACE program with a degree in leadership and ministry.

Reed will be responsible for developing relationships with CBC’s donors to increase the level of support for annual giving and campus-wide fundraising efforts.

Reed is a member of the Conway Regional Medical Center Women’s Council, the Women’s Inc. Advisory Board, a Dazzle Daze committee member, a Lion’s Club board member and is a member of the Renewal Ranch Marketing Team. Reed and her husband, Donnie, reside in Conway along with their two children. They are members of Second Baptist Church in Conway.

Brooks Walthall has joined the Enrollment Management Division at Central Baptist College as the new Director of PACE Enrollment. Walthall received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Central Arkansas, a Master of Arts in Education from Western Kentucky University, and completed post-master’s coursework at the University of Northern Colorado.

Walthall most recently worked in community development and as the worship leader for Renewal Ranch from March 2015 to the present. Walthall is a member of Central Baptist Church in Conway, where he serves on the worship team. (1999) Kevin Sullivan led the Vilonia Lady Eagles to their third consecutive Class 5A softball state championship appearance. He was named an assistant for the west in the Arkansas All-Star Softball Games. He was named the River Valley & Ozark Edition Softball Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. He and his wife, Hannah, welcomed their first child, son Jaxon Mark, in June.

Mustangs Win in St. Louis

HAT A GREAT WEEKEND CBC HAD SEPTEMBER 30 THROUGH OCTOBER 2 AS THE MUSTANGS PARTICIPATED IN THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS AMATEUR GAME PROGRAM.

The Mustang family headed to St. Louis on Friday, September 30 for an Alumni and Friends Event at First Baptist Church in Arnold, Mo. James Southwick, a 1982 CBC alumnus and Director of the Family Life Center in Arnold, facilitated the use of the First Baptist Church facilities. More than 250 alumni, friends and Mustang fans attended the event that included a buffet-style dinner and comments from CBC President Terry Kimbrow and Mustang Head Baseball Coach Dr. Aaron Brister.

On Saturday, October 1, the CBC Mustangs played the St. Louis Community College Archers in a game at Busch Stadium.

The game was held immediately following the St. Louis Cardinals versus the Pittsburgh Pirates match up. The game was part of the St. Louis Cardinals Amateur Game Program, and CBC was the first Arkansas school to participate. CBC brought more than 1,200 fans to the event and watched the Mustangs defeat the Archers 5-2.

Throwing out the first pitch before the Cardinals game and representing CBC was Elmer “B” Lindsey. B is the husband of CBC Board of Trustee member Jenny Lindsey and a former player in the Cardinals organization from 1958 to 1963.

On Sunday, October 2, the CBC Baseball Team, those on the Alumni and Friends Mustang Caravan Bus, and other CBC staff attended the 9:30 a.m. service at First Baptist Church in Arnold. The church was so welcoming to this group of more than 150 people.

When asked, Dr. Coach Aaron Brister had this to say about the experience, “I believe the event was a total success! The Mustangs’ fans got an exciting ballgame and a win. Our players were able to display the talents that God has given them on a big-time stage. As coaches, we had the opportunity to show family, friends and those that stayed around after the Cardinals game exactly what we are trying to do with this program. We give God the glory as He continues to bless this program and our college.

None of us deserve the blessings, but Christ continues to show us favor.”

Both the Mustangs and the Archers substituted pitchers often, trying to get everyone a touch. “Our pitching was good,” remarked Coach Brister. “Our hitting finally came around thanks to the leadership of returners Monterio May, L. Donta Howard and Nash Nichols. Newcomer Austin Allen was a bright spot.”

In 2016, the CBC baseball team broke win records and won the first American Midwest Conference championship. This event was a good wrap-up of a 45-16 conference championship season and will serve as a pivotal moment to kick start the 2017 season. N OCTOBER 18, CBC HOSTED ITS WINTER SPORTS MEDIA DAY for our CBC Winter Sports, including Women’s Basketball, Men’s

CBC Adds Gaines and Carnahan

HATEL GAINES HAS BEEN NAMED THE HEAD VOLLEYBALL

Coach at Central Baptist College. Gaines, originally from Jonesboro, Ark., received a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Arkansas State University.

Gaines comes to CBC from Cape Girardeau, Mo., where she served as volleyball coach at Cape Girardeau High School. She has five years of coaching experience in different capacities at the high school and Junior Olympic (J.O.) levels.

Gaines attended high school at Jonesboro High School, where she earned all-conference honors and all-state volleyball honors. She also earned the title “female athlete of the year” her senior year of high school.

Taylor Carnahan, originally from Russellville, Ark., is entering his first season as Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Central Baptist College. He was the assistant coach for the Mustangs in the 2015-2016 season, when they had a 5-9-2 season. The Shatel Gaines previous year (2014-2015), he was a student assistant helping the Mustangs to a 10-7-2 season. The team made it all the way to the finals of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Regional Tournament.

Carnahan is a Central Baptist College alumnus, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology-Exercise Science in 2015. He played for the Mustangs for three years before taking on the role as student assistant his senior year.

organization to enhance and promote the Mustang Athletic Department. The Mustang Club was recently formed in the fall of 2014. The Club exists to aid the Mustang teams, coaches and student-athletes. Mustang teams compete in the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association (NAIA) in the following sports: Baseball, Softball, Volleyball, Wrestling Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Basketball, Golf and Soccer.

The membership levels for the Mustang Club begin at $50 and provide a great opportunity to support the student-athlete population, which makes up nearly 53 percent of the overall student
