CBC Adds Band Program GUNTER TO SERVE AS DIRECTOR

C

ENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE HAS announced the addition of band to its programs for the 2016 fall semester. In addition, Tim Gunter has been hired as Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music.

Gunter is most well-known for his tenure as director of athletic bands at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark, a position he held for 15 years. He has also served as associate director of bands at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., and numerous bands across the state of Arkansas. Gunter most recently has served as the pastor of worship and discipleship at First Baptist Church in Camden, Ark., since 2012.

Gunter received a Bachelor of Science degree in music education in 1979 and a Master of Music Conducting degree in 1993, both from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. CBC Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Gary McAllister said, “Several years ago, we had a band, which was really more like an ensemble.

Although we had some good students and an excellent part-time director, we were unable to sustain the program; as a result, we decided to disband and wait until we could provide proper support for instrumental music. I’m pleased to announce that the time has arrived! We will begin recruiting band members immediately and will start the new band program in fall 2016.”

The CBC band will host concert performances and attend various CBC athletic events. Band scholarships will also be available for this new program.

McAllister added, “Tim Gunter is an answer to prayer. I prayed for a full-time band director who would be a good mission fit, but I never dreamed that we would hire someone of Tim’s caliber. With more than 300 students in the Razorback Marching Band, he won the prestigious Sudler Trophy, the pinnacle honor for collegiate marching bands. As I reflect upon God’s goodness and provision, I stand amazed! He has blessed Central Baptist College beyond measure!”

I’ve heard many people say, “I can’t give enough to make a difference.” I hope you know that EVERY contribution to CBC, whatever the size, enables us to continue our mission, which is “the integration of Christian Faith and academic excellence in a Christ focused environment.”

The Annual Fund allows you to partner with us in changing lives, it ensures that we are able to provide the resources and support necessary for students to receive a quality education. It is designed to help the College serve students on a day-to-day basis. While we have been so blessed to receive some large contributions to our Vision 2020 capital campaign, those monies are designated for building projects and cannot be used for daily operations. As the institution grows, our general operating budget increases with it.

Here are just a few of the ways your contribution to the Annual Fund is used:

1. Ministry Discount: Students in the traditional program who are licensed or ordained to the preaching ministry by a qualified church and are actively attending or serving in a qualified church OR wives and dependent children of a licensed or ordained preacher in the preaching ministry that is actively serving in a qualified church are eligible to receive the Ministry Discount.

CBC different from other institutions is that we do not just focus on students academic needs; we also focus on their spiritual development. All students, both those in the traditional and PACE programs, complete nine credit hours of Bible as part of their degree programs. Students also are required to attend weekly chapel services, and they have the opportunity to participate in small groups each semester. Spiritual Life Programs are led by Donny Parrish.

4. Professional Development for Faculty and Staff: To best serve our students, faculty and staff must stay current in their field. New discoveries and innovation happen daily and to be able to best prepare our students, all of our employees must continue learning. This happens in the form of membership in professional organizations, conferences, on-site or online training programs, webinars, books, videos, etc.

I often reflect on the advice shared with me as I have visited with Dr. Elmer Towns, author and co-founder of Liberty University. Dr. Towns looked me in the eyes and gave me this charge, “Terry, we have a ‘Big God’ so dream ‘Big Dreams.’ God can do anything if you have faith and trust in Him.” Do you believe that? Churches can also support the Annual Fund by observing CBC Day which has been scheduled for September 18, 2016. On this day, churches are asked to take a one-time offering for the Annual Fund and/or make a pledge to give additional offerings over the 12 months to follow. Arbor Day Foundation Honors Central Baptist College with Tree Campus USA® Recognition

C

ENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE has been named a 2015 Tree Campus USA® recipient. Tree Campus USA,

a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation, honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation.

To obtain this distinction, CBC met the five core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus USA, including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

Tree Campus USA, which is modeled after Tree City USA, encourages best treemanagement practices for the urban forest.

The city of Conway is a Tree City USA. According to CBC President Terry Kimbrow, “CBC included working on the certification in 2011 in our Campus Landscape Masterplan. I’m excited that in 2015 we had a committee that stuck to the

course and achieved the certification. Their hard work and dedication sends a valuable message to the community that CBC cares about trees and the environment.”

The Arbor Day Foundation has helped campuses throughout the country plant thousands of trees, and Tree Campus USA colleges and universities invested more than $36.8 million in campus forest management last year. CBC employees and students have volunteered with the Conway Arbor Day local event and have coordinated events to plant trees and landscaping on the campus.

Committee members involved in the certification process included CBC representatives Alexis Hall, Kerry Norris, Ann Gardner, Latasha Smith, Jerry Clifton and Charlotte Stewart. Community members included were Alison Litchy with the Arkansas Forestry Commission and Kami Marsh with the Faulkner County Extension Office. CBC’s Landscape Masterplan was written by Crafton Tull. †

CBC Ranked by onlinecolleges.net Central Baptist College has been named a Best Online College in 2016 by onlinecolleges. net. CBC is the highest ranked private college in Arkansas, ranking at number two. Holding the number one spot is the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. CBC is also ranked by onlinecolleges.net as the number two Most Affordable College in Arkansas, being edged out

by John Brown University in Siloam Springs.

To determine the best online colleges in each state, the site examines the factors deemed most important to prospective students: academic quality and reputation, online program strength, cost and student aid.

CBC announced in 2011 that it had received accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to offer online degrees.

Academic Awards Ceremony Recognizes Student’s Achievement

Baptist College honored student success and achievement at the Academic Awards Ceremony in the CBC Burgess Auditorium. More than 20 students were selected and recognized by CBC Departments for their outstanding achievements in the classroom.

The Bible Department presented the Zondervan Theology Award to Dillon Nix, the Jesse Thomas Christian Service Award to Brady Morris and Tyler Brantley, and the Outstanding Biblical Studies Award to Adam Rogers.

The Business Department presented its Outstanding Graduate Award to Alexandria Loyd and the Servant Leadership Award to Jacob Dowdy.

The Education Department presented the Promising Teacher Award to Megan Hensley.

Hattie Horton and Kassidy Irwin. The Organic Chemistry Award went to Makaye Key.

The Literature and Language Arts Department awarded Zach Siebenmann the Spanish Award and Jonathan Sims the Outstanding English Student Award.

The Music and Fine Arts Department recognized Darius Tolbert with the Outstanding Recital Award.

The Communications Department presented the Outstanding Journalism and Multimedia Award to Raquel Westermann.

The department gave four students the Communication Award. They were C.J. McClung, Addie Bender, Mati Spencer, and Blake Wilson. The Outstanding Oral Communications Award went to Abby Staton.

The Math and Science Department awarded the Freshman Chemistry Award to

Cho and Ward Receive Greatest Contribution Awards

OVERNOR ASA HUTCHINSON AND DR. BRETT POWELL delivered Central Baptist College’s commencement addresses on Saturday, May 7 in the Burgess Auditorium. The commencement for traditional students was held at 2 p.m. with Governor Asa Hutchinson as the speaker. The Professional Adult College Education (PACE) graduation was held at 10 a.m. with Dr. Brett Powell, Arkansas Department of High Education director, as the speaker.

CBC President Terry Kimbrow said, “We were honored to have two key leaders who support higher education in Arkansas to serve as commencement speakers.” CBC awarded degrees to 120 graduates, 60 in the traditional program and 60 in the PACE program.

This year, Yoyo Cho (traditional graduate) and Tabitha Ward (PACE graduate) received the honors.

Cho, a native of Hong Kong, is a 2016 graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and counseling with a minor in journalism. During her time at CBC, Cho has been very involved as a student leader in the CBC Housing and Residence Life department, been active on the journalism staff – named the ACMA 2015 Photographer of the Year, was part of the CBC Choir, served as an officer in the Rotaract Club, was the 2014 Homecoming Queen, and has remained active at Grace Bible Church in Conway.

Each year, Central Baptist College honors two individuals with the Greatest Contribution Award at graduation. The Greatest Contribution Award is given to individuals who are deemed to have enriched the lives of students and faculty spiritually, academically, socially, personally and have demonstrated his or her love for CBC by giving unselfishly of personal energy, time, talent and effort.

Ward is a native of Conway, Ark. Ward has been employed with the commercial insurance company Crum & Forster for ten years, where she currently works as a policy processor with the explosives and agricultural lines of business. Ward is a 2016 graduate of CBC, where she received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Ward is a member of New Life Church in Conway and serves in the Little Life department. Ward has a nine-year-old son named Justice. †

HE 8TH ANNUAL BENEFIT DINNER AND AUCTION WAS HELD AT CENTRAL Baptist College on Saturday, May 14. The event began on the campus grounds where guests enjoyed a buffet catered

by Adams Catfish Catering. A 67-item silent auction was also set up on the Bates Student Plaza. Silent auction items consisted of items related primarily to hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation. Once the silent auction ended, guests made their way to the Burgess Auditorium for the highlight of the evening’s festivities, a fishing seminar with legendary bass fisherman, Larry Nixon.

Known affectionately as “The General,” Larry is one of the most respected anglers in tournament bass fishing history. In his years with Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), he has earned several wins and finished in the top-25 of the FLW Angler of the Year standings the majority of his tour years.

Mustang Baseball Continues to Break Records

T

HE CENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE BASEBALL TEAM, coming off two straight record-breaking seasons, knew they had something special during off-season workouts. Coming off a 2015 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) World Series bid and a 31-win season were firsts for the program. Head Coach Dr. Aaron Brister is a big believer in ‘firsts.” Brister, a former youth pastor, has spent much of his career teaching young people about what should come first in their lives, our relationship with Jesus.

The opening of AMC play saw the Mustangs travel to #18 Freed-Hardeman and drop all three games. The squad and coaches came home knowing they had their work cut out for them.

The Mustangs would win the next three conference series with two games to one splits.

On the baseball field this season, the team knew they faced challenges. The American Midwest Conference (AMC) had a reputation as a strong baseball league. The AMC consistently has multiple teams in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) polls.

In the NAIA Montgomery Bracket, the Mustangs beat Keiser University 10-2, lost to Auburn Montgomery 20-5, and the season ended with a 20-7 defeat to Keiser. With the loss, the Mustangs finished their record breaking season at 45-16. The CBC program has never had a 40+ win season in its history. In this first year with the AMC, the Mustangs finished third in the regular season and won the AMC Tournament to advance to the NAIA Championship Bracket for the first time in school history. †

The season developed quickly with CBC moving thru non-conference play 18-1, highlighted by victories over National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II member Ouachita Baptist University and cross-town Division III member, Hendrix College.

With an exciting run in the AMC Tournament, where Central Baptist faced #10 Missouri Baptist twice, the Mustangs won both and captured their first AMC Tournament Championship and a spot in the NAIA Montgomery Bracket as the #3 seed.

Lady Mustangs Win Their Way to 2016 NCCAA World Series The Lady Mustangs started out with five straight losses as the coach and young team began to jell with its three seniors leading the way. The schedule was mixed with NAIA-ranked teams along with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II opponents.

As the team began to “find themselves” and bond together as a group that believed in service to others and to each other, they saw their level of play begin to heighten. Coach Drage has a phrase she uses often, “all for Him.” This motto is a reminder that we are playing for our Heavenly Father and should give our all in everything we do in service to Him. After being knocked out of the conference tournament by Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.), CBC defeated Mid-America Christian in an elimination series to gain the NCCAA Central Region title and a trip to the 2016 NCCAA World Series May 18 - 20 at the Botetourt Sports Complex in Troutville, Va.

HE CENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE MUSTANG SOFTBALL TEAM started the season

with a few unknowns. First, the team welcomed a new coach, Kristen Drage, in her head coaching debut. Next, the college was entering into its first year in the American Midwest Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), while maintaining its longstanding relationship with the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).

At the NCCAA World Series, the Lady Mustangs finished in the third position in Pool B, narrowly missing an opportunity to advance to semi-final action. They ended the season on a good note, defeating Mid-America Christian 4-0 in their final pool play game.

The Lady Mustangs finished their first year at 30-32, 15-9 American Midwest Conference (AMC) and in fourth place in its first year in a strong league. †

Mustang Golf Finishes Second in AMC Tournament

M

EN’S GOLF HEAD COACH LYLE MIDDLETON knew he had some talent

but a young squad. Could they perform early was the question. The Mustangs had the answer.

CBC opened the fall portion of its schedule at the Southwestern Christian University Invitational and finished third out of 16 teams. Austin Harmon was the medalist, with Luke Cornett coming in third. Both received awards for their play in Oklahoma City. In addition, Harmon was named the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week for his performance.

The squad followed its first outing with a first place finish in the Lyon College Classic, where again a Mustang was named medalist, Austin Harmon. Cornett placed second, while Preston Harmon (3), Tyler Pinney (5) and Joel Futrell (8) placed in the top 10.

To round out the fall, the squad placed third at the Freed-Hardeman University Invitational and set its sights on the NCCAA Central Regional and National tournaments. A fourth place finish in the Regional qualified the Mustangs for the National tournament played in October. CBC finished third in the NCCAA National Championship, and Austin Harmon and Luke Cornett were named All-Americans.

Spring came and the Mustangs continued to perform at a high level – winning their own tournament, the CBC

Invitational, and scoring well in performances in Fort Smith and Harding University. For his play in March, Luke Cornett was named as a NCCAA Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week.

The Mustangs concluded their season with a second place finish in the American Midwest Conference Tournament behind the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) #3 ranked William Woods University. Austin Harmon was named First Team AllConference at the conclusion of the event.†

Joshua Buczek Named 2016 NCCAA Hank Burbridge Recipient

ENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE’S JOSHUA BUCZEK has been selected as the

Second Team All-American, NCCAA Scholar Athlete, Central Baptist College Dean’s List

2016 Hank Burbridge Unlimited Potential Outstanding Leadership Award recipient. The award is the most prestigious given to a baseball player in the NCCAA.

2016 – American Midwest Conference (AMC) All-Academic Team, NAIA Champion of Character Award (Baseball-CBC), Central Baptist College Dean’s List.

The purpose of the award is to honor the NCCAA’s Outstanding Christian Baseball Player of the Year with potential Christian service through baseball. In order to be eligible for this award, a student-athlete must be at least a junior; possess and demonstrate, outstanding leadership qualities; possess and demonstrate outstanding athletic ability; and possess and demonstrate a vibrant and clear Christian testimony on and off the field.

Joshua hasn’t just spent his time in the classroom or ball field, his efforts in the community are endless. He has served at his local high school in camps that teach baseball skills and teach youth how to use sports in a Christ-centered way. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and has participated in various events.

He served as a student-ministry intern for Conway’s First Baptist Church and as an interim youth pastor during the summer at Friendship United Methodist Church in Donalsonville. Buczek has a gift for music and has used his talents as a drummer to be a part of praise bands in his hometown church and in Conway.

Buczek, a senior from Donalsonville, GA., came to CBC after his freshman season at Emmanuel College where he was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.

Conway was a family affair with his older brothers, Samuel Buczek (also a former Mustang player) and Associate Head Coach Jonathan Buczek, all making the trip with Head Coach Dr. Aaron Brister. He is a Sports Management major and currently has a 3.49 GPA. Other recognitions during Buczek’s college career include: 2015 - Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) First Team All-Conference (shortstop), MCAC All-Tournament Team, MCAC Scholar Athlete, NCCAA Central Region First Team, NCCAA

Josh and Sam decided to follow me to CBC that God was going to do something very special in both of their lives. Josh is the perfect example of the type of man I want to recruit for my program. He is excellent in the classroom, excellent in the weight room, excellent on the practice field, excellent in the game, and puts Jesus as #1 in his life. It is very rare to find a player with all of those qualities. I am blessed to have coached him.”

This is the first time a Mustang has received the award, founded in 1990. †

TEVEN HALL HAS JOINED THE PROFESSIONAL ADULT COLLEGE EDUCATION OFFICE and will

be serving as the Director of Military Relations. Hall received his Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts from Regent University, a Master of Arts in management and leadership from Webster University and attended Command and General Staff College in the U.S. Army. Hall is a member of First Baptist Church of Maumelle, where he serves as the Chairman of Deacons, Chairman of Personnel Committee and as an adult Sunday School teacher. Steven is married to Laura and they have two children, Katie and Hayden. †

(1992) Dora Handcock was promoted to captain with Murray County Emergency Medical Services.

(2010) Jared Durham seized the opportunity to become part of the Texarkana, Ark., Police Department Criminal Investigation Division as a detective, thus sustaining his career in law enforcement, while also currently working on his Doctorate, the highest degree awarded by a graduate school.

(1996) Bethany Kennedy graduated from Arkansas Tech University on May 6, 2016, with a Master of Arts in English.

(2010) A.J. Gary has been named Director of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management.

Mustangs in the Making Visit the Little Rock Zoo

N SATURDAY, APRIL 9, A GROUP OF 30 LEGACY children, along with their parents, spent a day at the Little Rock Zoo. The weather was beautiful and everyone had a great time visiting with other CBC alumni and their children.

Since the Mustangs in the Making Legacy Program launched in January

2015, it has seen nearly 200 future Mustangs enrolled! The hope is that this trip becomes an annual event in our Legacy Program.
