CBC ANNOUNCES $6 MILLION COMMITMENT FOR NEW RESIDENCE HALL Students at Central Baptist College will soon have a new home away from home. In September, CBC President Terry Kimbrow announced a $6 million commitment from Max and Debbie Story of Magnolia for the construction of a new residence hall. Preliminary plans for the new, three-story, 150-bed residence hall are in the works.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT toward the end of November. Construction is scheduled to be completed on August 4, 2014, just in time for students to move in for the fall 2014 semester.

Academic Update In the summer issue of the Connecting Point, we announced that the CBC Education Department would officially open and admit students during the fall 2013 semester. Approved Bachelor of Science in Education degree programs are English-Language Arts, grades 7-12; Social Studies, grades 7-12; and Physical Education & Health, grades K-12. I am pleased to tell you that right now we are working on proposals to have approved licensure programs in Elementary Education and Middle Level Education.

These should be submitted by March 1, after which we will await a response from the Arkansas Department of Education.

Vision 2020 Update At their regular meeting on September 28, the Central Baptist College Board of Trustees voted unanimously to increase the Vision 2020: A Miracle in the Making Phase 1 campaign goal from $12 million to $21 million. Major factors that contributed to this increase were the decision to build a new library instead of renovating the existing building and the $6 million gift that allowed for the construction of the entire residence hall as opposed to just one wing. Contributions and pledges to date total over $16.2 million!

Vision 2020: A Miracle in the Making is a plan to complete 10 major construction projects over a 10 year period to accommodate an enrollment of 2,020 students. Phase 1 of Vision 2020 includes three projects: 1) the David T. Watkins Academic Building, 2) the Story Library and 3) a new residence hall.

Project #1, the David T. Watkins Academic Building, is a threestory, 38,000 square foot building that houses administrative offices, the Bible and Missions Departments, the PACE and Online Studies Department and 13 classrooms including the Mitchell Lecture Hall. This building was completed in August 2012. Project #2, the Story Library, is approximately 16,000 square feet of library space, meeting rooms, a café and learning commons. Construction is nearing completion, and an open house is scheduled for February 1. Project #3, a three-story, 150-bed residence hall, is scheduled to begin construction in the coming weeks. The plans were approved in late October by the City of Conway Planning Commission, and site work began

Giving at Year-End Many want to take advantage of a last-minute donation before the calendar year ends. I want to remind you that any contribution made to Central Baptist College that is postmarked

by December 31 will qualify for a tax deduction in the year in which it is made, even if we do not open the mail until next year.

BENEFIT DINNER Annual Fund and Ambassador Program Introduced

7th ANNUAL BENEFIT DINNER & SILENT AUCTION ANNOUNCED Revamped Event Adds Concert to Planned Activities!

Central Baptist College is pleased to announce the seventh annual Benefit Dinner & Silent Auction, to be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014. The event has been revamped, so those who have attended every year will experience something entirely new! However, this will also be a great year to attend for the first time!

Proceeds from this year’s event will go towards sound equipment, lighting equipment and décor upgrades in the Burgess Auditorium.

The night will begin with a silent auction to be held in the Story Library. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and guests will be treated to an hors d’oeuvre dinner and made-to-order specialty drinks prepared by CBC Dining Services and executive chef Jill McCollum. The meal will be served “station style” so that guests can experience the ambiance of the newly opened Story Library on a self-guided tour while enjoying great food and a vast array of silent auction items.

When the Silent Auction ends at 6:30 p.m., guests will move to the Burgess Auditorium in the Harold E. Cooper Educational Complex

to enjoy a benefit concert by inspirational musician Ken Medema. Event attendees will enjoy reserved seating.

Individual tickets are $50, and sponsorships range from $500 to $5,000. Speer and Smittle to be Honored at Homecoming The Distinguished Alumnus is awarded to an individual who has served their community for more than 20 years. This individual demonstrates a legacy of service, and continues to serve in a multitude of ways that demonstrate interest in Central Baptist College.

The Outstanding Young Alumnus is awarded to an individual who has been instrumental in the advancement of their chosen profession primarily within the past two years. This individual demonstrates the love of service within their community and continues to show interest in CBC.

This year, the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus award is James Speer. James has a long history with CBC. He met his wife, Barbara, at CBC, and they were married in 1965. James surrendered to the ministry in 1964, and has served churches in Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas and Louisiana as pastor, music director and youth director. In September 1979, while James was pastoring Timberlane Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, La., he accepted the position as Camp Director at Daniel Springs Baptist Camp in Gary, Texas. James is retiring from that position on December 31, 2014, after 35 years.

This year, the recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumnus award is Robert “Scotty” Smittle. After graduating from CBC with a bachelor’s degree in social services in 2006, Scotty Smittle continued his education with a dual master’s degree in community counseling and marriage and family therapy from John Brown University. He is now licensed as a Licensed Associate Counselor by the State of Arkansas. Scotty is the Clinical Director of Chenal Family Therapy in downtown Conway, providing counseling services for families, couples, teens and children. He is also a speaker and trainer throughout Central Arkansas. ✝

The Central Baptist College Mustang Classic Golf Tournament was held on Monday, September 16 at Nutters Chapel Golf Course in Conway. The weather was perfect for the event, with 156 players competing in morning and afternoon sessions. Thanks to all the sponsors and players for making this event such a success.

CBC Alumni & Friends enjoyed a fantastic night of fellowship and baseball on Saturday, July 20 at Dickey-Stephens Park in Little Rock. Those who attended dined on a buffet of burgers, hot dogs, chips, beans and a mountain of popcorn before the game. The Travelers played a great game against the Tulsa Drillers and won 6-5. So many memories were made as friends sat and reminisced the good ole times!

SCHOLARSHIPS Hoggards Establish Athletic Scholarship Bill and Rena Hoggard of Conway recently established their fifth endowed scholarship at CBC. The Denise Reid Jackson Endowed Scholarship was established in honor of their daughter-inlaw. Once endowed, the recipient of the scholarship will be a female athlete.

The first two endowed scholarships, the Bill Hoggard Endowed Scholarship and the Rena Hoggard Endowed Scholarship, were established in 2002 for a male athlete and a female athlete, respectively. Several years later they established two more: The Glen Hoggard Endowed Scholarship and

the Diane Hoggard Jackson Endowed Scholarship, again for a male athlete and a female athlete.

The ongoing commitment to endowed scholarships from Bill and Rena Hoggard is a wonderful example of a couple who have used the gifts that God has given them to impact students in a meaningful and lasting way. Endowed scholarships can be established with a minimum contribution of $1,000. The scholarship fund must reach the $10,000 level within seven years to be considered fully endowed. ✝

Cecil and Carolyn Hall Endowed Scholarship Established The Cecil and Carolyn Hall Endowed Scholarship was announced at a luncheon at Central Baptist College on October 24, 2013. The scholarship was established

by Robert and Cheryl Stewart, the Halls’ daughter- and son-in-law.

The Halls are longtime members of First Baptist Church of Damascus, Ark., and before his death in 2012, Cecil served for many years as the church treasurer and on the building committee. Carolyn is a retired kindergarten teacher from the South Side Bee Branch School District. The couple also have a long history with Central Baptist College. Carolyn, two of the Halls’ children and numerous grandchildren have attended CBC, and their son-in-law, Robert, was the head men’s basketball coach for the Mustangs from 1979 to 1990.

The Cecil and Carolyn Hall Endowed Scholarship will give priority to students who are members of First Baptist Church in Damascus. In addition, the scholarship is for students who demonstrate financial need, and will therefore be applied to tuition only. ✝

Ward Family Singers Announce Scholarship The Ward Family Singers Scholarship was recently announced at Central Baptist College. The college hosted an appreciation luncheon for representatives of the Ward Family Singers & Gospel Music Society Inc., the donor organization that funded the Ward Family Singers Scholarship. The original date of funding for the scholarship was November 9, 2012, making it eligible to fund an award for the 2013/2014 academic year. This endowed scholarship is administered through the Arkansas Community Foundation, a first for CBC. Stephen Dominquez, the first student to receive this scholarship, also attended the luncheon to meet the scholarship donors. Stephen is a junior at CBC, and is seeking a Bible degree with a minor in Youth Ministry. Stephen is from Sheridan, Ark. CBC has over 60 endowed scholarships in existence, the majority of which are fully funded. Those that are active have principal balances ranging from $10,000 (the minimum to be considered endowed) to over $200,000. ✝

5 LCD SIGNAGE DISPLAYS 50 LED BACKLIT MONITORS 10 COMPAQ ELITE CONVERTIBLE MINITOWERS Central Baptist College recently received a technology grant valued at more than $25,000 from HP. The grant includes five LCD Digital Signage Displays, 50 LED Backlit Monitors and 10 Compaq Elite Convertible Minitowers.

HP’s donation to CBC will be used to help furnish the new Story Library currently under construction on the CBC campus. The structure is scheduled to be completed in December.

“The students at CBC will benefit greatly from the HP donation,” said CBC President Terry Kimbrow. “This technology grant will provide a critical resource for our students in their studies and equip our Library and Learning Commons with digital signage and enhanced and expanded student workstations. We appreciate HP’s support of CBC and higher education.” ✝

College Scholarships for Multiples, Siblings and Legacies Did you know that CBC offers tuition scholarships for multiples and siblings? It’s true.

The Multiples Scholarship offers 25 percent tuition discount for twins, 30 percent discount for triplets, a 35 percent discount for quadruplets and additional discounts for more multiples. The scholarship is awarded to students attending CBC concurrently, maintaining a 2.5 GPA and enrolled in at least 12 hours per semester.

The Sibling Scholarship is awarded at $1,000 per year/$500 per semester per sibling for up to eight semesters as long as the siblings are attending CBC concurrently. Recipients must maintain a 2.5 GPA and must be enrolled in at least 12 hours per semester.

The CBC Legacy Scholarship is awarded to students who have at least one parent or grandparent who graduated from CBC and is a current member of the CBC Alumni Association. The scholarship amount is $500 per year/$250 per semester for up to eight semesters. The recipient must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA and enroll in at least 12 hours per semester.

CBC offers an Associate of Science degree in Military Technologies with locations in Conway and in North Little Rock at Camp Robinson. To admitted students, CBC also offers the following benefits to our servicemen and women: full time veteran advisers on staff, process enrollment certifications for VA GI Bill Education, Federal Tuition Assistance, tuition discounts for qualifying soldiers, free evaluations of AARTS/SMARTS transcript and participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

Currently at CBC, 26 percent of the traditional student population is military, and 38 percent of PACE/Online students are military. ✝

PACE PROGRAM RECORD ENROLLMENT The PACE (Professional Adult College Education) program at CBC set a new high with 320 students enrolled in classes this fall.

PACE is designed for working professionals and adult learners.

Students can take one class at a time in an accelerated format.

Classes meet one night per week for five weeks.

PACE began as a degree completion program in the fall of 2000 with 51 students and only two degree options. The program has since been opened to any qualified student wanting to earn a bachelor’s degree, even if the student had no college hours.

Degree options in the PACE program now include: AA in General Education; AS in Military Technologies; BS in Leadership and Ministry; BS in Liberal Studies; BS in Management Information Systems; BS in Organizational Management; BS in Psychology; BS in Adult Education and Training; BS in Leadership (New); BS in Human Resources Management (New); and BBA in Business Administration.

Central Baptist College Baseball Makes History Signing 23 Athletes Central Baptist College Baseball Coach Dr. Aaron Brister may be new to CBC, but he’s already breaking records. In August, Coach Brister signed 23 student-athletes. Those 23 signees comprise about half of the total team. The athletes were compiled from three different states, with 20 individuals hailing from Arkansas. Those signed on this historic day include: Gunner Allen,

Steven Barber, Alex Broadwell, Sam and Josh Buczek, Dillon Cates, Lane Chapman, Jackson Cossey, Cameron DiMatteo, Jacob Eakens, Jonathan Earnst, Colin Fluesmeier, Ryan Forte, Addison Grandy, Cody Grinnis, Jared Haggard, Justin Holtz, Jesse Hughes, Jacob Johnson, Lathan Lovell, Cody Rhoades, Joseph Shell, Will Ward and Jacob Wright. ✝

Sullivan Named Men’s Basketball Coach Wes Sullivan accepted the position of Men’s Basketball Coach in August.

Prior to joining the staff at CBC, he coached at Hendrix College. Sullivan earned a bachelor of arts in history from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three children, Julia, Riley and Clara, and are members of Lakewood United Methodist Church in North Little Rock.

Mustangs Compete in NCCAA National Tournament The CBC Mustang golf team participated in the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament held in October in Panama City, Fla., at the Hombre Golf Club.

CBC Names Jeffcoat as Head Women’s Volleyball Coach

The Mustangs finished tenth in the team standings for the three-day tournament. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Jared Davis of Malvern H.S. with a score of 219, followed

by Tyler Pinney of Conway H.S. (231), Preston Harmon of Izard County H.S. (234), Cole Wallace of Central Arkansas Christian H.S. (236) and Austin Harmon of Bryant H.S. (245).

The Mustangs will be off for the remainder of the first semester and will pick back up in the spring as they try to qualify for the NAIA National Tournament, held at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. ✝

Coach Jillian Jeffcoat entered her first season as the Lady Mustangs Volleyball Head Coach this fall. Jeffcoat was born and raised in Plano, Texas, where she attended Prestonwood Christian Academy High School. She graduated from Ouachita Baptist University with a bachelor of arts in kinesiology and education.

Jeffcoat is planning on seeking a master’s degree in kinesiology at the University of Central Arkansas.
