LETTER FROM THE EDITOR NATHAN SHARP / EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

I

’m not the type to pat myself on the back. I don’t see any reason to. Despite being told that our work is really good, and despite being told I’m carrying more than my weight, I still don’t see it as good enough. To me, nothing’s ever good enough. Everything can be better than it is now. That’s why I spend so much time sitting in the same chair just making edits to this news magazine. Right now I’m sitting in that same chair trying to write around saying I did a good job.

When I look through the mockup of this magazine, I see all the hard work that everyone has put into it.

This is a group collaboration to the fullest extent.

I’m so proud of all my associates that really put their heart into this. I’ve never led anything like this before, and I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. Watching the news magazine staff grow and become better writers just makes me so proud. I just don’t know why I can’t produce that same respect for myself.

Now, if anyone has anything bad to say about my team, or what they have written, I will defend them to my dying breath. Not many people who read this magazine will know how many struggles we’ve faced while making this. We’ve had issues all the way from relearning the software to needing to find a brand new publisher because our old one went out of business. Do not ever question our work ethic. I personally make sure my team performs as well as possible.

Most of them don’t even need a nudge to give their all.

While I’m writing this, my team is in the middle of brainstorming for Issue 2. I can’t help but feel impressed by how naturally they have fallen back into this routine. Aside from some antics, they have become more comfortable with each other in a way that doesn’t inhibit progress. It makes me reminisce on what being on news magazine staff was like before COVID-19 struck. For the many years I’ve been on

the team, it has always been a welcoming place. I really can’t say enough how proud I am.

While I have a lot of positive things to say about my time as editor, I can’t help but be stressed by the weight of it all. It’s a pretty natural reaction to all the setbacks, I suppose. Rewrites and finding a new publisher have been pretty crazy events. Earlier in the year, I also had to teach the new staff a lot of the ins and outs of writing and designing their stories. It was a challenge I wasn’t fully expecting to come with the job, but with that teaching experience came a new confidence in my team. I now know what they know, and can expect good work.

To help with stress, I started reading an old book of mine. It’s about practicing bodhichitta. Bodhicitta, or bodhichitta depending on where you’re reading, is all about the idea of enlightening your mind. This process of enlightening your mind is fueled by growing your compassion and love for all other living things. Through this process, you will also learn to love and feel compassion for yourself. The ultimate hope is to become completely at peace, despite any physical or emotional issues you may be suffering from. The compassion you have developed for all will make you wish for this feeling of peace upon every living creature.

It’s funny, I’ve owned the book for years, but never read further in it than twenty or so pages. Upon reading further in, I wish I had read more when I was younger. There’s a lot of pain in this world, and you only have two ways to deal with it. You either harden your heart and build up defenses, or you can let the pain soften you and teach a lesson of compassion for others. I’m still definitely learning, especially the part about compassion for yourself.

Benton Traffic: Tardiness’ Best Friend ARDEN BELOW / SENIOR REPORTER

A

s I sat through five songs on the second day of school, trapped at the same light on Benton Avenue, I knew I was doomed. I found myself getting angrier and angrier as I got further through the first half of Kanye West’s new Donda album. The current state of the dropoff traffic at Central has become kind of a frenzy. The issue is somewhat complicated.

Students that head northbound on Benton try to turn left into the back student lot while a flurry of people headed south on the same road attempt to turn right.

On top of this, parents drop off their students in the new designated area line up on the left side of the lot entrance, leaving little to no room for students that are trying to park their vehicles.

If this entryway were just a little bit wider, there would be room for two lanes of cars, the left lane being a dropoff lane and the right being a drive-through lane to get to the student spots. Instead, we have enraged 17-year-olds yelling at the minivan in front of them for taking too long to get their kid’s violin out of the trunk. It would also be helpful if parents didn’t feel the need to drop their kids off right at the front of the line. The traffic situation would be much more efficient if we could all do our part in taking a few extra steps instead of practically being carried to the Pit doors. I digress.

While the best solution would seem to be to leave the house earlier, this did not work for me. I left about an hour before school on the cursed morning addressed at the beginning of my ramble, and still ended up slinking in two minutes late to film class (apologies, Mr. Cantrell). After I arrived in an unfashionably late manner, I found that the second floor of the New Building offers a perfect view of the unhinged traffic.

The question I found myself asking was “Why is the traffic worse when we start school earlier this year and the surrounding middle schools start two hours later?” For now, this still remains a mystery to me.

The true solution is to take an alternate route to avoid Benton altogether. My personal method as an eastside resident is to pass Central headed west on Chestnut Expressway and turn right onto North Boonville Avenue. After passing Pipkin middle school, I turn right onto Calhoun and then right again on Jefferson Avenue. This way, I steer clear of both Benton and the wretched dropoff line. Finally, I can get to school 15 minutes early without feeling like I’m wasting my time.

Perhaps the first month of school will always come with severe traffic on Benton. However, the designated dropoff spot has created some serious problems for students and parents alike in the mornings. My only hope is that this problem eventually gets fixed so that students can arrive to school with plenty of time to get themselves prepared for a full day of education.

The Toll of Athletics MORGAN MARTENS / REPORTER

O

ur sports teams’ schedules have been quite an issue. From the volleyball and tennis teams not being able to go to dances and school events, to softball possibly not being able to go to homecoming, scheduling issues like these have been happening for years. This year, however, it seems these issues are occuring less.

Issues have been going on all year due to players having to choose between two or more things that are stressing them out and making it difficult for them.

It’s impossible to be two places at once but lately it feels these athletes have had to do pretty close to it.

On top of the scheduling, school is not easy for any student athlete. Academics always come first but with all the stress of the scheduling and events it’s been an issue for student athletes to balance both. Everyone expects the athlete to be there but it’s hard when an athlete does more than one thing.

It’s to the point where some athletes don’t see their family until eight or later at night. They don’t have a lot of time to do homework or talk and see their families. They have to rely on being responsible and reliable to where they get everything done and go to everything without sacrificing anything. Which makes it really difficult to choose what to do.

These issues have to be fixed. It is getting to the point where student athletes are having too many things pop up on their schedule and then they miss everything because something pops up and it’s mandatory.

Students have big issues with scheduling especially when two coaches or teachers really need the student athlete at the same time. As a student athlete I have to find balance between all.

A lot of student athletes have developed anxiety from all the things they are in. It’s to the point where some students can’t handle the anxiety from being in all the things they are involved in. They drop all or

some to focus on one. Scheduling has to be changed so students aren’t so stressed about everything they are in.

For some athletes they have been scheduled around like the more funded programs, but for the less funded programs there seems to be lack of communication for people to schedule events. The staff, teachers and students need to communicate better so the scheduling can get fixed. It is a problem for everyone including teachers. It is not something new to the school matter of a fact it is something that has been going on for decades not just at central but at all schools.

The biggest issue faced is student athletes not having time to do everything that they want to or need to. Leading to bad things like discipline problems, scheduling issues, bad grades, stress, and more. It is something that adults have not really realized up until this point. As student athletes, there needs to be some type of realization from the staff that we need help, and we can’t do this alone. We need the help of those around us. This issue needs to be fixed sooner rather than later, or it could hurt a lot of students.

A brief update on what’s happening in the Central and Springfield communities.

NATALIE REECE / REPORTER Springfield Schools are Seeing Great Rates of Vaccinations and Masking

W

ith Covid making its way into every facet of our lives, it’s hard to see an end to the chaos. Thanks to the hard work of faculty, staff, and students alike in Springfield schools, there have been great rates of vaccinations. Almost all colleges have reported an uptick in student and faculty vaccination as well, as a continued push for mask mandates in the district. Evangel University has set the standard with a nearly 92% vaccination rate among their faculty and a 68% rate for their students, MSU with 60% among students, and Drury with 70% of students. With the average age of death from Covid-19 dropping significantly in recent months, it’s more important than ever for students and teachers alike to get vaccinated and to encourage those around them as well.

It’s Monarch Butterfly Season here in Missouri

A

utumn in Missouri brings with it many great beauties, one of these being the migration of Monarch butterflies. During this time, the monarchs have completed half of their journey of migration and are returning to Mexico. This beautiful process is one that many find to be a unique marker of the coming season and an amazing annual event. The journey isn’t completed by one butterfly. In fact, it takes 4 generations to complete the great migration. Each butterfly stops and lays eggs so that the next can continue the journey. However, in recent years we’ve seen an alarming drop in the monarch butterfly population. This can be attributed to environmental changes like the loss of habitat and the changing temperatures from climate change. One way you can help save our winged friends is by helping to restore some of their lost habitats. Planting milkweed in your yard not only helps give butterflies a protected place to rest and restore their energy, but is also beautiful in your yard. Any common milkweed will do the trick!

District Officials are Set to Review New Start Times

S

pringfield Public Schools have observed a change in start times across the district, with most elementary schools starting at 8:30, most middle schools starting at 9:30, and all high schools starting at 7:30. This decision was made as a way to try and combat the extreme bus driver shortage here in Springfield. This way, bus drivers complete two routes in a move made to help families with transportation. Deputy Superintendent John Mulford spoke in an interview.

“No changes to start times are expected for this school year. However, with complaints from faculty, students, and parents alike that may change. The district has to make the best decision it can, at any given time, and continue to evaluate options based on input and data,” he said.

Bulldogs Football Reigns Victorious for First Time in Six Years

O

n Friday, September 10th, Central Bulldogs made history -- winning their first varsity football game in nearly six years. The football team’s comfortable 49-0 victory over Agape, with the help of an impressive five touchdown performance from Central’s starting quarterback, Ahmias Hart, 12, marked the first game since October of 2015 that Central’s varsity team has reigned victorious.

he Boys Soccer team defeated Parkview on August 31st in a late night thriller at JFK Stadium. The winning goal was scored in the dying seconds of double overtime from an impressive outside the box shot from Max Robertson, 9, to give Central the win with a scoreline of 3-2.

Kilties Win First Place in Gainesville

T

he Kilties took home the first place trophy at the “Hootin ‘n Hollerin” festival in Gainesville. The drum and bugle corps performed the fan favorite Snare Step, which was enough to impress the judges into awarding them first prize.

entral’s volleyball team continued their impressive start to the season on September 21st against Waynesville in their 3-0 victory to improve their record to 8-2-1, which is a whopping .77 win percentage. After their victory over Waynesville, Central is now tied for first place in the Ozark Conference. Moreover, this home victory moves the Bulldogs’ home record to a perfect 2-0 this season in the pit. The volleyball team looks as strong as ever and will look to defend their home record against Rolla on September 23rd.

very year new staff join the Central family.

This year Central welcomed a new principal.

Jeremy Brown previously led schools such as Scott Charter School in Arkansas and Jacksonville High School in Jacksonville North Pulaski school district.

Before he officially joined bulldog nation in July of 2021, students often saw him in the building introducing himself and getting to know the staff and culture of the building.

“As for goals, it’s just to be visible and to learn names. One of my primary goals is to learn every child’s name in our building and let you guys know that you’re not just a number.” Said Brown. Going to a high school with over 1,000 students can be very overwhelming, especially being in an administrator position at a new building. However, Mr. Brown never fails to put in hard work and effort with his fellow staff members and students. As you walk the hallways in-between classes, he will always be present, and never fails to ask you how your day is going.

Mr. Brown surprisingly had a high school environment quite like ours when he was our age. He had a lenient sense of environment, but when his new principal came in everything changed to being very structured. “I want it structured so you can really, truly appreciate the instruction you get from your teachers, appreciate your peers. This is one of the most diverse schools.” Brown said. Central High School truly is one of the most diverse, you can come into this building and meet people from all different types of life. “You’re going to deal with so many different people and you’re going to have to be able to relate to all people. I think that’s the difference between people having success and people having failure because you’re going to have to be able to relate to all types of people.” Added Brown. By surrounding students with a structured sense of diversity, students will be prepared for that part of the real world.

High school is challenging for anyone and if it

isn’t for you, consider yourself lucky. “I know at your age you’re in the moment, ‘let us enjoy it!,’ but at the end of the day, it is about right now. What are my next steps for the future? I think the more we prepare you guys, the better off and easier it will be for you guys to be successful.” As students it is our responsibility to do as much as we can to become successful, but it is our educators job to support and guide us down the right path. Our educators fuel our passions, motivations, and interests in what we learn every day.

“You don’t have to just survive, we love you guys!

It’s our goal to provide you with a safe environment and I’ve seen where that has an impact on attitudes towards teachers, attitudes towards peers in knowing that they can come to an environment where they feel welcomed and is a safe space for them.” Brown said.

More often than not students do feel like they have to just survive high school, so to speak. These four years of our lives are supposed to be filled with memories of friends, accomplishments, and preparing to go live out the rest of our lives.

Passion Respect Integrity Discipline Exellence

EMMARIE LOGAN / REPORTER Knowing that Mr. Brown has a passion to make school successful and fun for Central students, provides hope for the years to come.

An important part of being a successful educator is having a set plan in place to guide students and in Mr. Brown’s case, teachers as well. “When you walk across that stage, whatever you decide to do in life, be passionate and be respectful. Carry yourself with integrity. I think that’s one of the hardest things to do right now in our world...and be disciplined. I don’t mean punishment, I mean self-discipline and to me that’s what separates the haves and the have-nots.

My last is striving for excellence. When you wake up every morning and put your feet on the ground and you haven’t learned something about yourself or learned something new, you’ve wasted your day.”

These words: passion, respect, integrity, discipline, and excellence are the words that come together to form Mr. Brown’s PRIDE acronym. Some may have

seen it on the TVs in the commons, but most of you are just finding out about it as you read this. His PRIDE acronym is what he wants students at Central to remember and strive for.

“Why not Central? I always tell people when I took a tour here it almost reminded me of the movies and just how diverse you all are, the building, and the rich educational traditions that are here. You guys aren’t afraid to step outside of the box, especially academically which I absolutely love.” Brown said. It takes passion and commitment to lead a school, especially a school like Central. There is a large range of students who are talented and have so many strengths.

Mr. Brown sees the unique and amazing parts of Central’s community and wants to embrace each aspect. He himself graduated among greatly talented students, so he knows what it takes to be successful as a whole.

t is not unusual for either of us to be asked, “What is it like to work together as the outgoing administrator and the incoming principal?” On the surface, it doesn’t sound complicated; however, in reality, for some educators it might be a bit of a tightrope - especially if both individuals are not completely committed to doing what is best for the total school community.

What Came First?

The first order of business was an agreement to be completely honest and forthright. Trust would be essential to accomplish the important task at hand. If a courageous conversation was necessary, we would persevere through the tough and not-so-tough discussions.

The Springfield School District looked diligently for an individual with the requisite skills to lead Central High School, and there was no shortage of capable candidates. After a national search and many interviews over several months, Jeremy Brown stood out as the obvious choice. He sets high expectations for students, staff, and, most of all, for himself. In short, he is the leader the Central Community hoped it would find. Welcome to Central, Principal Brown!

We both made our lists. One contained a series of questions and ideas. The other consisted of the unique features of Springfield R12 and Central High School specifically. Time was set aside to focus, brainstorm and share thoughts and information. No question was unworthy, and both of us were anxious to begin the journey together.

What Was Next?

As the pace of the upcoming school year began to increase, we both paid close attention to our schedules.

With few exceptions, we attended meetings together.

It was crucial for the school community to recognize the change in leadership, but it was also important there be guidance behind the scenes. From planning a year’s worth of professional development, to working 10 \ NEWS

C.A.R.E. In Central’s Community WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM?

W

ith the new school year kicking off, Central is facing many changes. One of these new changes is the reconstruction of the In School Suspension, or I.S.S., program. The program has been renamed to C.A.R.E., which stands for “Connecting and Recovery Environment.” As the name implies, the goal of the program is not to punish students for behaviors, but to encourage growth moving forward.

“Elementary schools do Conscious Discipline so that they can connect to the root of the issue.

It’s where they’re speaking the same language, the teachers and administrators,” Dr. Ashley Felton said. “I was a teacher before [I was hired for] this role and hated I.S.S. because I would go in there, and students would either be sleeping, on their phone, or not getting any work done, and it didn’t really do anything to change behavior.”

Conscious Discipline is a social-emotional learning program that supports caregivers and guardians educating themselves on behavior before working with their children to correct it. The program benefits adults, as well as children, teaching the importance of regulating emotions and being a good role model for youth.

Felton described the issues with traditional I.S.S. classes and how they aren’t structured for any real change.

“Kids would get [I.S.S.], they would sit in there, and then they would be out the next day only to repeat again necessarily,” Felton said. “I guess my deal with it was to have some systems in place where we’re trying to connect with anyone who gets assigned C.A.R.E., and try to get to the root of the issue to deter the behavior.”

While action is being taken to create healthy and beneficial environments, policy and structure changes only go so far. Felton stresses the importance of an open and welcoming mindset. “[Change] isn’t going to happen overnight.

Everyone still says I.S.S., the kids still say I.S.S., the kids still see it as I.S.S.,” Felton said. “They

aren’t huge fans of getting it because, again, they’re seeing it more as punitive because that’s what it’s always been.”

Despite the challenges, the staff working with students have observed positive change, with work being done and growth being seen.

“The couple times that I’ve gone in and visited, I’ve had students who seem to be getting work done,” Felton said. “Or, when they have their restorative time, they get to either color or something of that nature, listen to music, and that seems to be going over very decently. They’ve busted out a good amount of work.”

Central is working to be a better community for you, and showing students how much they C.A.R.E. is one of many important steps.

The goal of C.A.R.E. is to create a better environment for students, teachers, and staff alike. In doing this, students will have a stronger support system, hopefully bettering Central’s community.

“I guess my deal with it was to have some systems in place where we’re trying to connect with anyone who gets assigned C.A.R.E., and try to get to the root of the issue to deter the behavior.”

he U.S. attempted to execute a drone strike on an ISIS-K vehicle in Afghanistan on August 29th, but the attack killed ten civillians. The attack failed to eleminate any ISIS-K fighters. The United States addmitted to their mistake on at a press confrence at the Pentagon. The 1996 Toyota Corolla that was targeted and destroyed belonged to a U.S. aid group.

“We thought this was a good lead,” General McKenzie said.

This action came after two bombings occured near the Kabul airport, killing 13 U.S. service members. One of these men being a Marine named Jared Schmitz from St. Charles, Missouri. 60 other civilians were killed as well. This action was carried out by ISIS-K, who fully claimed responsibility. While the evacuation deadline of August 31 was rapidly approaching, Afghan civilians and American citizens rushed to get out of the country at the Kabul airport, despite the danger of more attacks.

As the Taliban finished taking over the country, they began setting up their own government, led by Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund. Their all-male cabinet is made of some of the more hardline members of the Taliban, and have been told to implement Islamic law. The Taliban has reinstituted some of their laws and rules from when they controlled the country before the U.S. invasion, although some have been relaxed. For example, women are allowed to be educated, but they cannot study alongside men.

As Afghanistan is going through drastic change, the world watches.

his past July featured three separate group attacks within downtown Springfield. The first attack was on July 7th, against a couple walking home. The second attack occurred against a homeless man on July 26th, at 3:30 AM. The third was less than 24 hours later, just before 2:00 AM on July 27th, against a man skateboarding outside a parking garage on Campbell.

The couple claim that, as they were walking home, a group of around three men started following them at first. Then, they were kicked down, and more people came out of the nearby park to contribute to the physical abuse. The group of men shouted profanities about gay people towards the couple throughout the attack.

There is not much information regarding the second attack, but there is a video recording of the third assault. The video shows a young man repeatedly punched and kicked to the ground by 6 or 7 people.

Witness Jason Severance, who recorded the video, claims the man did not seem to do anything to provoke this attack. Severance also claims that the same group later surrounded him in a parking garage, but he was able to drive away.

There have been no updates about any leads or arrests the police have made, and there have not been any recently reported attacks. It is not known if these attacks are related.

FDA Approves COVID Vaccine KAITLYN SILKEY / REPORTER

n August 23, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first coronavirus vaccine. The Pfizer BioNTech vaccine is available for people 16 years of age and older. This vaccine is also available for emergency use for people 12 years of age to 15 years of age. Full FDA approval of a vaccine takes several months. A lot of information and studies is required to determine how safe and effective they are. People who had already been vaccinated were encouraged by the FDA to report any serious side effects they faced from it. As a result, they found out that the Pfizer vaccine can cause temporary aches, pains, and fevers in few people.

However, the risk of serious side effects is extremely low. This provides the FDA with evidence that the vaccine is safe for a majority of people and works well to prevent severe cases of coronavirus.

When going through the process of approving a vaccine, the FDA collects data through a series of trials testing the vaccine. This is to make sure they are safe and effective for people.They use unbiased independent laboratories to conduct these trials so that there is no favoritism towards different companies or the government. The FDA uses these clinical trials and data to determine the risks and benefits of the vaccine as well. For the full approval of the FDA, the vaccine has to have more pros than cons, meaning the benefits must outweigh the risks. The vaccine

will still be monitored even after its approval. The FDA will keep tabs on vaccination data to see if any different severe side effects come up. If there are any problems, the FDA will most likely pause the administration of the vaccine and undergo further research on it. They will make sure the benefits are greater than risks before releasing it once again. Strict guidelines are set by the FDA for approved vaccines. They require manufacturers to test the doses in batches to ensure the quality and effectiveness of the vaccines stay consistent and reliable.

Through clinical trials, the FDA found that the Pfizer vaccine is 91% effective. The side effects are mild and similar for the majority of people. According to the FDA website, “The vaccine is effective in preventing COVID-19 and potentially serious outcomes including hospitalization and death.” The Food and Drug Administration will continue to monitor the Pfizer vaccine and any safety concerns that arise.

Athlete Highlight MAVERICK HILL / SENIOR REPORTER

Will Young

W

ill Young, senior, is a player on Central boys’ soccer team. Will is not only a starter in the midfield, but an invaluable member of the squad.

“Will is a great player. He always seems to know what the right play is and is always in the right spot, on and off the ball,” said teammate Andy Su, 12.

Will’s talent on the soccer field didn’t just develop overnight, however. Will says he’s been playing soccer for as long as he can remember and credits his father with getting him involved in the sport.

“I’ve been playing pretty much since I could walk. My dad grew up playing the game and he played all the way through college, and still plays whenever he can, so he got me involved with soccer as soon as he could and I’m really thankful he did that,” Young said.

Throughout the years, Will’s love for soccer has developed beyond just being a fun sport to play.

“It’s kind of hard to explain. I feel like soccer deals with a unique skill set compared to a lot of other sports. I also really enjoy that it’s a very organic game. The lack of excessive stoppages gives the game a real sense of flow that I feel like it’s hard to find in other games. Due to the organicness, there’s a lot more improvisation and ‘thinking on your feet’ than in other sports I’ve played and I really enjoy that challenge.

I also think it’s a sport that can really bring people together across different cultures. I’ve met people from Congo, Haiti, Morocco, South Korea, and many more and have been able to bond with them through the sport,” Young said.

Brett Boney

B

rett Boney, junior, is a member of Central’s girls’ tennis team. She has been part of Central’s team since she was a freshman. Not only has she been part of the team, she has been on varsity ever since she first stepped on the court for Central.

“I’ve been on varsity since freshman year, that year I was number six and I’ve been number two for the past two years”, said Boney.

As Central’s number two spot on the varsity squad, Brett plays doubles matches with Central’s number one spot on varsity, Allie German. Alongside Allie, Brett boasts an impressive record of 14-3 this season and has seen a great deal of triumph on the court.

“Last year Allie and I got third at the Kickapoo invitational so we had high hopes for this year. We ended up getting first seed so we got a bye in the first round.

We then won our matches against Bolivar, Jefferson City, and Glendale to make it to the finals. Finals was against Kickapoo, which we lost, so we got second,” said Brett.

Despite the success Brett has seen, she says she isn’t satisfied yet and has her eyes now on winning districts this season.

“I think Allie and I have a really good chance of winning districts individually this year. As a team, the competition is going to be hard but I’m confident that we can pull through.” Boney said.

With all the talent Central’s tennis team has, along with the help of Brett, it’s no wonder she has such confidence about winning districts with the team again this year.

Breaking “The Curse”

hat is football? Is it a brown ball, a game Americans love, or even a career choice?

Many of us will never really know exactly what football is mainly because it’s personal. Sports become a pathway of life whether that’s seen through a coping mechanism or a favorite hobby. Central High School has not been sport-popular in the most recent years, but that reputation has begun to change. Many sports including volleyball, girls basketball, and girls soccer have won their districts breaking what seems to be the curse of losses. Although, when you hear the words high school sports there is usually one in particular you think of. That sport would be football which happens to be the sport that brings the most school spirit, the best Friday nights, and memories to last forever.

“I have a special group of young men and to be able to get through to them you have to build a foundation of trust, you have to build a foundation of just being personable, and sometimes coaches aren’t like that. They believe that I have to be this and they have to be that and there’s no green area in between. Not for us, we find it very rewarding and satisfying when we get to know these young men,” said Coach Johnson, the head coach of Central football.

Over the span of six years Johnson has really learned what’s most important about his program.

Since October of 2015, Central had not won a varsity football game. Some faculty and students even began to call it “the curse” due to the fact that the team just couldn’t find a win. What could possibly be great about all the losses? The program that Central football has built is strong and determined, not because of the physical states or the playbook, but because of the family-like environment and the brotherhood that has been created.

“We’re all brothers so we have a family-like connection, we hang with each other and build each other up. We push each other every single day to become better,” said Ahmias Hart, 12.

The importance of having each other to keep themselves going is something Hart and the other players have become very aware of. Due to the no-win record, Central’s football team lost school spirit as a whole.

Theme nights were barely noticeable and sometimes students weren’t even aware there was anything going on.

During the summer of 2021, Dawg Days, a multi-athletic program workout was held to bring all different teams together to work, sweat, and become better teammates.

“Where it improved is the fact that the student body or other athletic programs that were involved see the football team as more than just a separate entity...we’re just trying to show them hey we’re one of you all. We’re not bigger, we’re not better, we’re one of bulldog nation,” says Johnson.

At the beginning of the school year, all sports teams, in season and off season came together to decide a perfect support system. Coaches and teams decided that in a mutual agreement, all the athletes would attend each other’s games. This athlete agreement was a step in the best direction. Football players started seeing more faces, fans, and ultimately the hype of what “FNL” is supposed to be like.

On Friday night September 10th, Central High had lost 53 varsity games in a row, but something clicked.

The commitment of staying with a losing program, the hard work, the most packed, hawaiian themed, student section than ever before, and above all else the Central Bulldog unity produced what would be a mark for history. The Bulldogs beat Agape 49-0 that night, breaking the streak of losses. However, that win also created a student body to be there for the team and new blazing fire for the football program. What seemed to be something unfixable, will soon become something that makes Central High School even more unique.

n 2020, the Central High School softball team held a record of 5-15. Some may look at that record and not be satisfied, although the hard work and honor on the field are worth so much more. The softball team has to be one of the most dedicated, considering Central doesn’t have a field on campus and because of their lower than the average number of athletes, but the athletes themselves persevere above the challenges.

“Everybody is very encouraging towards me and they never let me get down on myself. Everybody gets along, and the girls also always have a strong motive to getting better. Anytime somebody makes a mistake, they always try their best to improve,” Kiera Gravely, 9, said.

Teammates are one of the most important aspects of athletics and they can make or break a team.

Gravely is the only freshman that joined the softball team this year and her presence came with an interesting surprise.

“Ok, so this was my first time ever pitching in my entire life. I’ve played catcher since like 3rd grade, and I was planning on catching this softball season, but the person who we were counting on to pitch left Central and went to Hillcrest instead about a week before school started,” Gravely stated.

The previous pitcher leaving added yet another challenge, pushing Gravely to put extra effort, work, and determination towards her team. Although she faced challenges, she never faced them alone. Her teammates stand by her side supporting her and making sure she knows just how valuable she is.

“Most of the girls on the team started playing in high school, so we aren’t on the level as say Kickapoo because most of the girls on their team have been playing together since like middle school. Even with the little time that I have been on this team, it seems like family, because everybody brings each other up and nobody ever gets too down on themselves and everybody is also super nice and welcoming,” Gravely said.

Nowadays high school sports teams have become well-seasoned previously experienced varsity teams.

Seeing a varsity sports team such as Central softball not applying to that norm is inspiring. Every player 20 \ SPORTS

that comes in gets a fair chance, time to learn, and an opportunity to find a sport and way of life they love.

I’m going to miss that feeling when I graduate. It’s also a sign of individual athletic progress and helping your team,” Huffman, 12, stated.

Being a part of a team is something that you can’t replace. A crowd full of fans is what fuels the team’s fire, and when you earn that point for you and your teammates the only feeling is to be proud.

“I feel like my favorite part about softball is when I get a good hit, because it just comes so smooth off of the bat, and everybody’s cheering, and you already know that you are safe so you don’t have to worry about being out. I also like growing close to each and every girl,” Gravely said.

As great as it feels to receive support, the real gift is knowing you were a supporter for someone else.

“I always cheer and shout for the girls when they are up to bat. I also try my best to encourage people during practice and believe in them. I strive to be a person that anyone on the team can go to,” Huffman stated.

Huffman has played softball all four years of high school and looks forward to it every year. An environment that is appreciated and positive is one that students, especially athletes, want to go back to. The Central High School softball team has faced it’s many struggles but finds it inside themselves to have fun, work hard, and be amazing student-athletes.

Kiltie Corps Welcome New Assistant Director

he Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps is one of the most tight-knit groups at Central, and this year, they welcomed a new Assistant Director into their family. This year, Colton Lightner is stepping in to fill the position, and the energy and excitement is high. Adding to the positive changes, the Corps is working on furthering diversity and acceptance among members.

“I think my favorite part of the year is the growth we’ve made as a Corps this year,” Director Angie Groven said. “By our handbook, your sex has to be female, but we decided that we are not going to tie gender and sex in anymore. Now we’re making it a set standard for all adults and Kilties to respect each person’s gender pronouns and their names that they are most connected to.”

Groven exclaimed how the welcoming of any gender identity has furthered the tie that the group has with one another.

“That has made such a feeling of wellness, of community, of family, and it was a great move for us.

That has been my favorite part of this year so far, is seeing everyone blossom, everyone being themselves one-hundred percent,” Groven said.

Groven spoke highly of Lightner and his eagerness to help the team, become part of the family, and form bonds with the group.

“He has just been wonderful. There hasn’t been a day where he hasn’t said ‘What else can I be doing?’” Groven stated. “Every day he makes a new, firm connection with a Kiltie, and there’s 40 of them, so that’s a lot to get to know.”

Several Kilties spoke about how Lightner has encouraged the Corps as a whole, from supporting them individually and behind the scenes.

“Lightner’s been great too! He’s super passionate about Kilties which has encouraged us all as a Corps,” Zoë Malega, 11, said. “He’s been working really hard behind the scenes to support us in every way he can!”

“I think he’s doing great! Every time he’s here he always looks so excited and I think he’s been wanting to do this for a long time,” Tobias LaDuke, 12, stated.

Lightner spoke about his favorite highlights with the Kilties so far, sharing special moments with the rest of the group.

When asked about his favorite moments with the Kilties, Lightner said, “[I’ve liked] learning all the traditions, and getting to know the kids better.

They’ve been very welcoming, and they’ve given me time to come in and learn about it; they’ve been gracious if I’ve made mistakes. They’ve helped me really be a part of the team.”

Central’s Kilties are growing and thriving, and it’s exciting to see where they will go with the help and encouragement of their newest family member.

Central’s Wrestling Team Reaches New Heights ASSISTANT EDITOR / ANIA KOVACS

T

he 2020-2021 school year was a monumental success for Central High School’s wrestling team-- especially 16-year-old Catherine Dutton.

In March of 2021, Dutton won first place at the girls wrestling state tournament in Independence, Missouri. She is the first girl wrestler from Springfield to win the state championship. The history-making doesn’t stop there. Dutton continued to win first place at the 16U Girls National Championship in Fargo, North Dakota. She then secured third place in the national junior tournament, which also hosts competitors from ages 17-19. Despite these incredible achievements, Dutton is not looking to settle any time soon.

“Well, of course I want to win state again, but this year at nationals I want to win the other division instead of taking third,” said Dutton.

However, a large amount of dedication is needed to take home these titles and Dutton recognizes that.

“I’m still super excited,” she added. “I’m proud of myself because I put in so much work and it paid off.”

As Dutton continues to strive for gold, Central High School’s head wrestling coach is supporting her along the way. Coach Brain Pyck has led the school’s wrestling team for 13 years and he is ecstatic for Catherine’s success.

“Catherine has quickly become an excellent role model for our youth club and high school girls team, as well as girl wrestlers from around the Springfield area,” said Pyck. “She’s one of the hardest working individuals on the team and it is great to see her have success on the state and national level.”

Coach Pyck has run a nonprofit wrestling program at Central since 2013. The Bulldogs Youth Wrestling Club is where Dutton began her wrestling journey in the sixth grade. Dutton is now halfway done with high school and is looking forward to dominating the opposition over the next two years.

“A lot of people didn’t see the amount of work she put in and the support from coaches and teammates that helped her reach the level she is at today,” said Pyck. “I am so proud of Catherine and really look forward to coaching her and helping her improve over these next two years!”

Club Highlight: Fishing Club NATALIE REECE / REPORTER

C

entral’s a great place to find a community of people who share similar interests as you. One of the best ways to find these heavens is in Central’s numerous clubs. Central’s clubs offer ways to gain friends, get involved in school activities, and pursue your interests. One of the best clubs for this is Fishing Club!

“Fishing club is a fun way to do something you enjoy. You get to be out fishing all day, and enjoying it,” 2020 state qualifier, Aidan Gray, 10, said.

Students in Fishing Club begin practice in early November and come together each weekend to practice. Students also practice and hone their skills in their own free time. Athletes even fish at Central’s pool occasionally in the early mornings for extra exercise reeling and tossing.

Last year, the fishing club competed in numerous competitions, and this year they plan to do the same.

“We are actually fishing for over $200,000 in scholarship money,” club sponsor, Coach Marshall said.

“We may have a great chance to bring home a State Title for Central High School.”

Central has had teams qualify for state tournaments each year and 2-3 teams competed for the title in 2020, showing just how skilled and disciplined the Central fishers are.

Central fishing club members have expressed their love for their sport and the community they’ve created. “The club is super fun and really cool,” said Gray.

“It’s a good way to meet new people too.” No matter the skill level, fishing club members come together to share their knowledge and experience to offer a fun way to pursue their hobbies with others in the Central community. So whether you’re a fishing pro or a total beginner, Fishing Club has a home for you at Central.

“It can be very slow but once you catch something it’s worth it,” said Gray.

Vera Turley

S

ophomore Vera Turley has had an interesting journey during her school career. Turley has been a model student here at Central, but that hasn’t always been the case. Now an active member of our community, Turley is an example of raising yourself to a higher standard.

“Throughout elementary school, basically, I failed all of my classes, and I blamed everything on my teachers because they weren’t teaching me right,” Turley said.

Fortunately for Turley, her academic career has been looking up since then. Things went in a much better direction from then on.

“In middle school, I started actually learning, and I got all these teachers to help me get all this stuff figured out, and so now in freshman and sophomore year, I’m getting straight A’s,” Verley stated.

Turley’s story is a fortunate one, and a great reminder that there is always a way to get back on top. In addition to the standard selection of pre IB sophomore classes, Turley also takes Orchestra and Culinary Arts. She is a member of the Central group Bulldog Buddies, which is a club dedicated to helping Central’s freshmen get more accommodated with the 24 \ FEATURE

school. She joined Bulldog Buddies this year, and said she enjoyed the festivities. “[The Bulldog Buddy Bash] was great; most of the students listened well; there were a few hiccups here and there, but it was fine,” Turley told us.

Turley is also on the Central Lady Bulldogs basketball team, and joined just this year. Although she has not had any official games yet, she believes in her team.

“The team is actually like a team -- the other teams I was on, the kids weren’t actually a team. They were more split apart, and they didn’t work together, and they always were mean to each other, but this is like we’re all a team, and it’s great,” Turley said.

Turley’s story is one to be inspired by. It’s proof that the human will can overcome many challenges, no matter where you start from. Turley’s school spirit is contagious, and is a great role model for her Bulldog Buddy freshmen.

The Dress Code Controversy

T

he recent increase of dress code enforcement has sparked significant controversy here at Central. At the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, dress code violations were taken more seriously than they had been in the past. Many students, especially female, were quick to become defensive due to this unfamiliar degree of dress code requirements. Because of this, it is increasingly important to view these new standards from the female perspective.

A recurring “anti-dress code” argument is that these rules contribute to the sexualization of girls. Many girls feel uncomfortable when their clothing is singled out in the presence of their peers and teachers. Though the purpose of a dress code is to decrease sexual objectification, the argument of whether or not it accomplishes that is complex and can be contradictory.

“I know many female students did not feel comfortable with male teachers or administrators commenting on their clothing choice,’’ said English teacher Jodi Pitts.

The motives behind this new increase of enforcement are not to single out girls and make them feel targeted, even if those are its unintended consequences.

“I think there is a larger societal problem at play here,” said Social Sciences teacher Emily Halinger, referring to the sexualization of young girls in public settings. Whether or not a dress code solves or even assists in reversing this issue, it is evidently what we should be more focused on.

It is likely that the school system uses a dress code to prepare students for their careers in which they will have to wear more professional clothing.

“I understand the reasons for a dress code, I think that we are trying to get students ready for professional life and most jobs have a dress code, even if it is less strict of a dress code,” said Halinger. “Do I think the reason for a dress code revolves or should revolve around safety measures? No.” As female students and teachers share their opinions on the new rigidness of Central’s dress code, the intri-

cacy of the subject remains evident.

While several students have felt that the new dress code is outdated, many teachers believe that the newly enforced dress code will be beneficial to the classroom and the school at large. Mr. Kellogg, a chemistry teacher, feels strongly about the topic.

“I think students should consider school as a professional setting, and should dress to an appropriately professional degree,” Kellogg said when asked about the dress code preparing students for a professional setting and the leniency of a professional dress code. “I don’t wear a tie every day, you know. There are days where I get to wear jeans and a t-shirt.”

On top of seeing the benefits of a dress code, Kellogg has considered the benefits of having uniforms.

“I think a lot of the issues we encounter while enforcing the dress code could be avoided if we have uniforms. I think there are socioeconomic issues that could be avoided if everyone was wearing a uniform. I think that the subjectivity in enforcing the dress code could be avoided if we had a dress code. A lot of my colleagues in the science department feel the same,” Kellogg stated.

Within his classroom, Kellogg takes how students dress seriously. Within a science classroom, a strict dress code is necessary for upholding safety.

“If the way a student is dressed is a safety issue because we are performing a lab, I will call them out.

That is an entire new level beyond the regular classroom dress code, and something I can’t let slide. These aren’t fashion issues or modesty issues,” Kellogg said.

n the first days of school, students were made aware of some policies that the new principal, Mr. Brown, would be enforcing. One of these policies was regarding cell phone use. Many students were confused about what the cell phone policy entails and how it will be reinforced. Teachers shared their position, and how they will be enforcing the policy in their classrooms this year.

Most teachers will be following the policy as it has been for years: students aren’t allowed to use their phones during class. While there are teachers who believe students aren’t allowed to have their phones out at all, it’s safe to have your phones out in the hallways and at lunch. Teachers do have the authority to write discipline referrals if you have your phone out during class after you’ve been warned, however.

Some teachers are supporters of the policy, and some are in between. Paul Epps, a science teacher, and Courtney Smith-Nelson, a math teacher, are supporters to an extent. They believe that phones do have their uses in class, but can also be a distraction and hinder learning when used in class. They want students to know when to put their phones away, and have the maturity to make those decisions. Colton Lightner, a Spanish teacher, and Katherine Hendrickson, a science teacher, are supporters of the policy.

“I want to be able to teach students and watch them grow without unnecessary distractions. I am going to implement a new ‘3 strike’ policy in my class where I issue a student a ‘warning card’ when I see their phone out. Once they receive three cards, they will get a parent contact. Anything after that will be a referral,” Lightner stated.

Teachers want students to learn as much as they can, and they see that phones pose a problem to students’ education. Most teachers do enforce the policy, but allow for some exceptions.

“I try to teach ‘polite’ phone use. Quick texts, emails, etc. are fine, but no scrolling through social

media or games,” Jessica Cash, an English teacher, said.

Smith-Nelson follows this same teaching.

“My personal philosophy about phones for my students and for myself is a phrase that I borrowed from our principal, Mr. Brown. In one of our teacher meetings at the beginning of the year, he asked us teachers to be mindful about using ‘polite technology,’” Smith-Nelson said after being asked how she plans to enforce the policy.

“That really stuck with me because it acknowledges that phones are useful and, in some cases, necessary, while still holding students and teachers accountable for being courteous and respectful,” Smith-Nelson continued.

Paul Epps has hope for the future effects of the policy.

“I would like the cell phone policy to help students develop a productive work ethic and a polite, considerate phone use habit,” Epps said.

Hendrickson calls home and coaches, and eventually writes up referrals. She’s understanding if it’s an emergency and a student needs to call or message someone.

“I hope students realize what they have been missing in class. From a teacher’s perspective, it’s really frustrating to have a group of students that are on their phones. Basically I have to repeat everything to them because they aren’t paying attention. It wastes so much time!” Hendrickson explained.

Many other teachers throughout the school feel the same. They hope that, by enforcing the cell phone policy this year, students will focus more in classes, and be more successful in their academics. They want students to use their phones politely, but mostly just keep them away during class. Otherwise, they’re free to use them.

Now that those days are almost behind us we get to go back to our autumn wear. With the season just around the corner, there’s no better time than now to start planning your fall fashion fits.

This summer saw a lot of inspirations from the late 90s and early 2000s with its basic silhouette that focused more on comfort and function rather than making a super bold statement. Halter tops and lowrise jeans seemed to dominate the online fashion sphere and you’d be blind if you didn’t see treturof gingham on every shelf. Sticking with the summer theme, statement and colorful patterns will still be extremely popular, but it will be made to fit the colder season.

“Trends come and go faster than you can blink. If you spend all your time worrying about what everyone else is wearing and what’s considered popular, you’re going to end up in debt and an early grave,” said sophomore Parker McClure.

“My favorite thing about autumn fashion is the endless possible combinations. Your not as restricted by the weather as you would be in summer or spring so every piece in your wardrobe is fair play. I’m excited to wear new things that I don’t even know what they are yet. Every change of season is a new opportunity.” said McClure.

Now more than ever it’s important to consume less and be more sustainable when picking your fashion

choices. Find what you love and continue to wear it!

“I want to see sustainable fashion become more mainstream. Buying from secondhand stores, local businesses, or small artists, and WEARING THE CLOTHES YOU ALREADY HAVE are so important. No one should feel ashamed to repeat outfits,” senior Ciel Backus stated.

No matter how you look at it though, autumn is the perfect time to experiment with fashion and try something new.

“I get a lot more freedom with my outfits because the weather is a lot less limiting. I can always put a jacket on in the fall, but in the summer I always have to dress for the weather,” said Backus.

“Sweaters over collared shirts, lots of long socks and long skirts, arm warmers. Yes. I love fall,” Backus continued.

So no matter what kind of fashion you’re into this season, do whatever works best for you!

ocie Tea’s Thai tea was a little on the steep end, as it was priced at $4.75. Although expensive, it was a big glass of tea. There was an overpowering amount of milk, and I couldn’t really taste the tea. I still thought it tasted good, but it was a little bit too sweet for my preference. The worker added a little too much sugar in the tea. The milk was good, though, there was a little less milk than what I would want in my Thai tea. The tea itself didn’t have a strong flavor; it was kind of bland and didn’t have much actual flavor to it. Altogether it made an okay mixture. I only wished they added less sugar, more milk, and a little bit of a stronger tea.

his food truck was very well priced at three dollars a cup. The tea is a mixture of red milk with dark Thai tea. It tasted great; it had a mild tea flavor with a strong milk flavor. It was mostly sweet, but not overpoweringly so. The drink was a great mix of the two liquids. The milk made a big difference on the flavor of the tea as it brought an extra change of flavor. The tea had a very earthy flavor to it that made a good change in flavor of the tea. The tea had a refreshing flavor that is great for someone after working out on a summer day or even whenever. The ice made the drink even cooler than it would have been without. There was not an overabundance of sugar. It had just enough to add a little bit of flavor but not too much to where it was all I could taste. It was balanced altogether.

Film Review: “Old” KAITLYN SILKEY / REPORTER

. Night Shyamalan’s new movie “Old” has been receiving quite a bit of hate since it was released on July 23 of this year. The thriller film is about a family who discovers a secluded beach that causes people to age extremely fast. M. Night Shyamalan is known for his contemporary supernatural plots and twist endings. Some of his most popular movies include “Split,” “The Visit,” and “The Sixth Sense.” A lot of critics and viewers are not satisfied with the execution of “Old.” They say that it is an absurd movie with awkward acting and awful cinematography. They say the beginning is far too slow and the plot is all over the place. Some even say the whole film is a waste of time.

When I first heard the terrible reviews I was shocked. I had been pretty excited to watch it, but after people’s opinions got out, I wasn’t so sure anymore. I ended up watching it anyway just three days after its release.

To my pleasant surprise, I truly enjoyed it. I really liked the unsettling and weird vibe throughout the movie. In most people’s reviews they said they didn’t like the acting. I personally liked the awkwardness.

I think this style of acting adds to the movie and the theme it’s putting off.

Another big opinion was how bad the cinematography was. I thought the odd shots added to the movie as well. It helps give it that unsettling feeling.

The movie was a little gruesome in a few scenes, but honestly I don’t think it could be a good thriller without some disturbing images in there. I thought there could have even been a little more horror added in. Since Shyamalan is famous for his plot twists, I was expecting a crazy one. I was not disappointed.

Reviewers say the twist was terrible. To be fair, it isn’t as crazy as Shyamalan usually goes for, but it was still a chilling turn. It added even more of the unsettling vibe I think he was going for.

Overall, this movie was pretty great. I stayed interested and entertained throughout the whole thing. I think it is a really good and creative idea for a movie.

I love the twist and the odd direction that was taken for this movie. Shyamalan executed it very well and I’m excited for him to put out new projects. I would give this film an 8.5/10 rating.
