Grounded is a celebration of Colorado South Asian artists, and it exists because of curiosity, generosity, and community. I am especially grateful to know Bala Thiagarajan. In 2022, she asked me a simple but important question: had CAE ever hosted a South Asian exhibition? At the time, I had to admit that I knew only two South Asian artists. And it’s hard to curate an exhibition when you don’t know many artists who fit. My conversation with Bala became a spark. She spent the last 3 years bringing together an extraordinary circle of artists and friends to form the Colorado South Asian Artists Group, and Grounded grew from there. My own understanding of South Asian art, its traditions, techniques, and histories, was limited when this journey began. It has been a joy to learn through the stories and processes of the artists represented here. I encourage you to spend time with each piece, and then go deeper, exploring the rich cultural traditions and individual perspectives reflected throughout the exhibition. Please join us again on the final day of the show, Saturday, February 7, for an afternoon artist talk in the gallery with many of the participating artists. It will be a meaningful opportunity to hear directly from the voices behind this work.
