Over the past two years, I have had the honor of leading the Center for Social Value Creation. I am privileged to call CSVC and Smith my home, and am eager to share with you the accomplishments we have achieved together this past year. We are on a great trajectory for growth, and there is much more to come!

Even while being faced with the brutal realities of being in a pandemic, times of social unrest, and many other crises; CSVC has been able to start many new exciting new adventures and accomplishments. This is all in part by your amazing support. We started this past year with the concept of an Impact Consulting Fellowship - and over the past year it has conducted 44 impact driven projects, through the work of 350 students and 28 alumni coaches. This Fellowship has had the honor of being chosen at the MBA Roundtable’s Fast Track Innovation Award winner, being spotlighted at the AshokaU Exchange, and featured in the Sustainable Development Solutions Network guide on “Accelerating Education for the SDGs in Universities”.

Our center doubled the amount of Case Competitions we have hosted for our students, not only reaching greater students. This has resulted in greater support for our community, a larger understanding of the importance of ESG and the SDGs in corporate decision making. Our Undergraduate students won the international Milgard Invitational Case Competition on Social Responsibility for the first time ever and our MBA students placed 4th place in the Net Impact Case Competition.

But we are not finished yet with our growth. We are excited to have launched the first iteration of our Research Impact Fellowship this past summer.

The upcoming school year will also have many new opportunities as we return to campus, from the Global Goals Jam coming to College Park to creating our Faculty ESG committees and starting additional research and original content from our CSVC community.

To educate, engage, and empower the Smith community and the world through thought-provoking dialogue, thought leadership, & hands-on experience.

Why We Matter CSVC is the hub of learning for how business is good for society. We help create well-rounded students who understand the ways that businesses are evolving. We are focused on all Smith community members and evolve around society’s new challenges as they arise.

We create future business leaders prepared to tackle the world’s greatest challenges. These business leaders will shape their organizations to understand the values of both mission and profit.

EDUCATE The New Purpose of Business

In August 2019, through the Business Roundtable 181 CEOs released a new Statement of Purpose for a Corporation. Over the past decade many had debated whether business should operate for profit or a triple bottom line? Whether stakeholders should matter in profit generated decision making? Is this all a fad or is business changing?

These CEOs made a clear statement to “commit to lead their companies for the benefit of all stakeholders – customers, employees, suppliers, communities and shareholders.”

This commitment was not one that is agreed upon lightly, and the impacts have been clear. From a drive to have a net zero carbon footprint by 2030 and reach the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to utilizing Environmental, Social and Governance metrics as the primary driver for investmentbased decision making; how a business operates has genuinely changed.

This statement has echoed from small organizations to larger corporations in all industries. We feel energized and optimistic when we see the bright future that businesses will lead us into with these new commitments to excellence.

Our teachings at CSVC have evolved. We need to be able to educate all Terps on this new evolution of business purpose. We have been doing this through some old ways and many new ones.

This past year we have devoted many hours of research, design, and thought leadership to provide informative biweekly newsletters. Our Here and Now Newsletter has been completley redesigned graphically to educate, engage, and empower the Smith Community. We continue to highlight our partners, and other centers in the Smith School of Business. We are excited to spotlight the amazing research and studies our faculty have conducted to move forward business’s leadership in social value creation. Our Key Three Newsletter an interactive opportunity for us to engage our community with important updates in weeks where we are not utilizing our Here&Now newsletter.

Transitioning to an Online World with COVID-19

As a result of our world transitioning to a largely virtual environment in 2020, many organizations, experts and thought leaders offered rich content on sustainable business, DEI, and more in the form of webinars. Recognizing the increased digital load students were burdened with during this time, but wanting to support their learning on these important topics, CSVC began the Webinar Webinar Write-Up series. By digesting the webinars and highlighting key messages via the recaps, students could engage and learn from the content without needing to attend hours of webinars themselves. Organizations highlighted in the recaps included The Aspen Institute, Sustainable Brands, Refinitiv, and others. Seen below are two examples of our weekly webinar write-ups.

In addition to finding creative ways to engage students in an online world, we are now excited to connect through LinkedIn as well. In the past few weeks we have been able to grow our platform to have over 300 followers. We are hopeful that this platform will be widely used amongst our alumni, faculty, staff, students, and donors. We have also connected with our Coalition for Better Business Partners, Tata and PwC. Instagram Live Series “When CSVC Director Nima Farshchi reached out to ask if I could participate in an Instagram Live session, I was so excited to support him and CSVC, and more importantly, have the chance to connect with undergraduate students. One of my favorite things about Smith was the community that I was able to build - not only the relationships with my classmates and peers, but also faculty, staff, and alumni. Getting the chance to reminisce about my time at Smith and talk about my journey after UMD helped me realize how pivotal my time at Smith was to my leadership development, confidence, and the start of my career. The students who joined the Instagram Live Session asked such thoughtful and intentional questions - about building a community and making a positive impact in the world - that made me proud to be a Smith alum. Constantly learning from our peers is one of the greatest benefits of being part of Smith, and I was able to connect with individuals through this Instagram Live that I wouldn’t have met otherwise!”

Social Enterprise & The Emergence of theSpecialty Chocolate Industry: Past, Present, and Future with Social Innovations Fellows “I got to attend Social Enterprise & the Emergence of the Specialty Chocolate Industry and participate in the chocolate tasting as the TA for the Social Innovation Fellows program. Learning how chocolate makers are taking one of my all-time favorite treats and making it healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable for the farmers who produce the cacao needed to make it was extremely interesting and completely changed the way I think about finding a snack to reward myself with during my grocery runs. Carla Martin, from the Fine Chocolate and Cacao Institute at Harvard, made the panel discussion extremely engaging with her expert mediation and interviewing skills, and I learned a lot about the global economics for chocolate and how changing the way we approach one of the globe’s favorite sweets, we can truly build a better world through business.” Watch the recording here.

ENGAGE Business for Good: Making Impact with your Company led by Martin Mayorga

“The Business for Good Prep Series event with Martin Mayorga was a captivating and incredibly motivating discussion. Mayorga talked about the origins of his company and how he managed to grow it to such a size while maintaining the family-feel among his employees and sustain best practices that maximize the benefits that coffee growers receive and truly deserve. The event helped me see that a balance between scalability and sustainability is incredibly hard to achieve, but still very possible. As I continue on my endeavor as an entrepreneur, I will be sure to apply what I learned from the Mayorga event and hope to someday have a business that is as impactful and successful as Mayorga Organics.” Watch the recording here.

Global Moral Money Summit

“The Moral Global Money Summit was a great event to learn more about the intersection of finance, politics, and sustainability. It brought together top leaders from these industries to discuss current and future trends across the globe and the United States. One of my favorite events on the agenda talked about the role of venture capital in sustainable business practices. This session highlighted the importance of financing business models that have a ‘double bottom line’ meaning whose sole purpose isn’t just to create financial value but to also have a positive impact on society. As someone who used to work in the industry, I really appreciated learning more and hearing different perspectives on how a push toward to creating sustainable businesses can be best supported.” — Lourdes Rivery ‘21 MBA

Tata InnovationDialogue & Global Internships Program

This past year at CSVC, we had the honor of continuing our partnership with Tata. We were able to continue hosting their Tata Innovation Dialogue and launch their global internship program. Due to COVID-19 this event went completley virtual and we were able to host students from all over the globe including London Business School, Norwegian Refuge Council, MIT, and more! CSVC was privileged to be joined by Adrian Terron, Head of Customer Centricity at Tata Group. He is responsible for the customer centricity initiatives across the group and uses his expertise to conceptualize, drive and evangelize customer centricity, including customer insight for existing and new businesses. Responsible Business In a Time of Crisis with Alex Edmans “In July 2020, I attended a virtual webinar on Responsible Business in a Time of Crisis hosted by Professor Alex Edmans of the London Business School. I learned how companies stand to better serve both investors and stakeholders when they make a concerted effort towards advancing social initiatives through growth and innovation. Professor Edmans focused on the concept of ‘growing the pie’ and provided evidence on how companies can drive profits while promoting social good. Furthermore, I was also introduced to the idea of ‘pie-growing actions’ which challenge companies that are most affected by crisis to continue serving society through responsible stewardship. This was an eye-opening presentation that forced me to reflect on my own current understanding of the corporate world. As I embark on my own career, I have been inspired by this webinar to seriously consider how the companies that I choose to work for commit their resources to better society.” Watch the recording here. — Ajay Shankar ‘21

Racial Biases in Artificial Intelligence Event with Smith Analytics Consortium Smith Analytics Consortium and The Center for Social Value Creation hosted our first ever Racial Biases in Artificial Intelligence webinar. Speakers included Lauren Rhue, Assistant Professor of Information Systems at the Smith School, Jameson Spivack, Policy Associate at the Center on Privacy and Technology at Georgetown Law, Jamilia Smith-Loud, User Researcher at Google’s Trust and Safety team, and Carter Price, Senior Mathematician at RAND. The insights from this event were impactful because of the state of our current world in terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Carter Price noted, “if you train on bias data you will receive biased results”. The thought leadership diversity within our panelists allowed for a robust discussion. Watch the recording here.

Impact Palooza with Royal Farms

ImpactPalooza with Royal Farms was a successful event thanking our CSVC donors while also eating too many chicken wings to count! We are extremely grateful for all of our support and were happy to educate on the impact work Royal Farms does while thanking our donors.

Shelby Kemp is a Marketing Project Manager for Royal Farms Convenience stores. In her role, she works on a number of projects for the company while continuing to find new ways to partner and improve the communities in which Royal Farms operates. Impact Consulting Fellowship

“The ICF experience was one of the best learning opportunities I had at my first year at Smith. It was a transformational experience in that social impact org reach greater heights. It really stretched me to improve my leadership capability, as well as develop my managerial style. In both instances I was able to work with a diverse group of students to develop a robust strategy to an organizational challenge. This year I had the opportunity to serve as a Project Lead on two projects, the first being Kid Talk which was a language development app and the second, Baltimore County Government which focused on finding locations for new community gardens. I learned a great deal about what it takes to lead a consulting team.

“I participated in ICF during Summer & Fall of 2020, & I am so glad I did!

Working on two different projects with two different teams allowed me to hold a variety of responsibilities, & work with some amazing nonprofits whose causes I truly believe in. I was unsure of my interest in consulting, so participating in ICF helped me discover how diverse the field is, & how creative you can get with it. I especially loved working on teams made up of Masters, Graduate, & Undergraduate students; I feel it’s very representative of how an actual workplace feels. I first consulted to Junior Achievement of Greater Washington, to help them discover why there were disparities in membership rates between their Northern Virginia & Greater DC programs. I interviewed past participants, helped collect & analyze data, & put together the findings. in our recommendations. My second time participating in ICF, I consulted to A Mother’s Promise, which is a brand new nonprofit working to protect & uplift at-risk girls in the DC area. My team helped draft grants, create marketing materials, & even connected AMP to some UMD clubs who would love to support their cause & offer programming for the girls! We ended up winning Best Recommendations at the ICF Huddle, which was awesome. In all, I’d recommend ICF to any Smith student who wants to gain valuable consulting experience, & while at the same time making an impact on the community!” — Abaan Kermani, Sophomore

Diversity & The Bottom Line with Center for Financial Policy

This webinar was intended to further one’s knowledge on the lack of diversity in corporate America and what it is costing investors and shareholders. Gilbert Garcia noted, “The same issues today are the same issues before”. A key takeaway from this event was how managers who grow up in poor households end up out performing managers who grew up with resources. Robert Raben also noted, “When you believe diversity is a high value… then you will see rapid catalytic change”. We thouroughly enjoyed the insights on how diversity was crucial in a portfolio management company to ensure long term profitability and the role the Securities and Exchange Commision should play in this. BUMK366 Growth Strategies for Emerging Companies

Oliver Schlake is a supporter of the Center for Social Value Creation as a Management and Operations Faculty Member. Topics covered in BUMK366 included leadership, internal growth strategies, merger, acquisition and franchising, and how environmentally sustainable business practices can be used as a tactic to ride out economic hardships. One class was an event featuring a pair of social entrepreneurs who co-founded a non-profit called The Chesapeake Experience. The program used sailing as a healing method for recovering addicts, and set up multiple tactics to bring sailing to some of Baltimore’s most at-risk youth. CSVC was excited to partner and cohost thise event with The Chesapeake Experience on November 19, 2020.

This semester the Center for Social Value Creation worked with The Global Consulting Fellows Program on one of their classroom consulting projects for ScanCom International. ScanCom International is a leading player in the global outdoor furniture industry and our goal is to provide innovation and excellence without compromising their vision of “Doing Business the Right Way”. They aim to create outstanding products that combine international design expertise with stateof-the-art production techniques and a proven commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility. Each piece is produced in Asia under ScanCom’s strict supervision and is rigorously tested to international standards for quality, durability and functionality.

“The Global Consulting Fellows Program merges real-world consulting engagements with an academic perspective. The vast network and experiences of the faculty team, led by Mark Wellman and Roy Thomason, provides students the opportunity to advise multi-international businesses seeking consulting services. For the past two years, I have been involved with the program as both a fellow and lecturing assistant. My admiration for the program stems from external and personal impacts that I’ve witnessed. Students have received job offers from their clients, top consulting firms, and several other industry functions. My own path led me to join Deloitte Consulting’s Strategy and Operations group, where I will be continuing my passion for learning. As undergraduate students, we evaluate hundreds of opportunities throughout our 4-years at this school. CSVC X AMA Ethical Marketing Panel

“I had the pleasure of helping plan the CSVC X AMA Ethical Panel this past spring. The event showcased speakers from diverse companies who showcased their organization’s key core values when displaying impact, products, or services in their marketing efforts. This panel had the speakers delve into terms like green washing and brand misrepresentation along with examples which are very relevant subjects with the rise of social media today. The speakers opened up the conversation of how organizations can be more honest with its marketing and communication of their products and services and the organizational challenges that prevent transparency. In a breakout room activity during the event, three cases were given and students debated the merits of the claim. This event was extremely informative and helped students gain insight on how companies approach ethical brand positioning.” Watch the recording here.

What It Means to Be Green Event

Investors, policymakers and consumers are all grappling with the same issues when it comes to ESG and what it means to be “green”. Nowhere is this more evident than in the fashion industry, as recent events are proving it to be a test case for the burgeoning ESG industry as human rights violations in Xinjiang region fuel diplomatic tensions around the world. While the pandemic exposed much of the industry’s bad behavior, from environmental to labor abuses that most ESG ratings systems failed to capture. Hilary Jochmans, Founder of Politically In Fashion, Kirti Poonia, Head of Okhai, and Russ Wermers, Director of the CFP led this impactful webinar. Watch the recording here.

Net Impact MBA Chapter

“Working as the President of the Net Impact Chapter (MBA) was one of my most memorable experiences in school - the journey taught me to adapt and innovate to the changing virtual environment by bringing events/ opportunities that empowered students to be motivated to make a difference in the world. Our board would often brainstorm not just on what we wanted to do with the Chapter, but also why we wanted to do the activities we planned by diving deep into the philosophical, ethical and social thoughts behind each event. Smith’s Centers of Excellence collaborated twice through webinars to students and alumni to showcase how you can maximize your Maryland Smith student experience and make the most of your Maryland Smith journey. Whether it’s participating in a case competition, launching a startup idea, learning how to be intentional, or gaining a global mindset, the Smith School’s centers have something for any business interest.

EMPOWER Net Impact Case Competition: Create a Post-Pandemic Economic Plan Smith MBA students Ashlee Albertson, Sara Bartzcak, Morgan Daly, and Daylin Russo placed fourth in the international Net Impact Case Competition (NICC) in March 2021.This year’s competition, sponsored by the University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder’s Leeds School of Business, focused on creating an ethically centered vaccine distribution plan. This Case Competition was held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The competition challenged students to create an economic recovery plan tailored to a global pandemic. Teams were required to implement solutions that provided equitable social and economic impact, and that also paid respect to a country’s diverse communities. This year’s case challenge built on the NICC’s commitment to challenging students to find answers to major societal issues with a positive social, environmental, and financial impact. The Maryland Smith team advanced to the competition’s final round and took home $1,000 in prize money. The team’s creativity, conscientious ideas and fearlessness were on full display and CSVC is proud to recognize their hard work! — Ashlee Albertson, MBA

Research Impact Fellowship (RIF) In June 2021, CSVC debuted its first-ever multidisciplinary undergraduate research program, the Research Impact Fellowship. This three-month-long remote program offers a hands-on learning experience for students to pursue academic research focused on promoting positive social impact through business. At its core, research is meant to bring understanding to the complexity of our world in hopes that understanding will lead to positive change. CSVC recognizes that there is a growing need for student involvement in shaping the future of business through impactdriven research.

Working alongside expert faculty and business leaders, Research Impact Fellows will be able to analyze current business approaches, deepen their understanding of social value strategies, and be inspired to pioneer creative solutions. We believe the opportunity to lead and conduct their own responsible business research will prepare students to think critically and better understand the importance of balancing the interests of shareholders with the social outcomes of business. Over the course of 10 weeks, each fellow will conduct a research project on a topic that aligns with the center’s mission to create a world where businesses operate for the long-term value of both people and the planet. Some topics include corporate social responsibility; Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); climate change; impact finance and ESG metrics; diversity, equity, and inclusion; COVID-19 impact; and more. In addition, students will attend weekly seminars and participate in 1:1 mentoring with research alumni, faculty, and field experts to strengthen their research and analytical thinking skills.

We aim to present student findings at the Grand Challenges Symposium, where fellows will discuss the innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions to their research topics.

BSE Case Competition

“In my Business, Society, and Economy College Parks Scholars program, the class of 2024 cohort was tasked with being a part of a case competition assigned by the UMD Center for Social Value Creation. In this competition, 16 teams were instructed to select a technological company that could improve in sustainability according to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. After completion, I realized that a great presentation is composed of great graphics, a strong message, powerful speech, and professionalism. These are all things that factored into my team winning first place.” — Sophia Wooden, Freshman

Phi Chi Case Competition

“The Phi Chi Theta social impact case competition connects eager Smith students with local non-profits in an engaging and impactful 2-week event. In the past, each Phi Chi Theta pledge class has participated in a case competition using a hypothetical prompt written by a major Consulting firm. The executive board and I wanted to re-energize the event so that students gain hands-on experience working for a real client and local nonprofits can receive quality pro-bono recommendations to help grow their organizations. Since the start of the Phi Chi Theta social impact case competition in Fall 2020, Phi Chi Theta pledges have worked with two non-profits in the DMV area whose missions center around community outreach and sustainability. The students conducted research, synthesized their findings, and presented final deliverables to the clients with solutions in brand management, fundraising and grants, and other strategic recommendations. As Pledge Educator, it was incredibly rewarding to see students develop critical skills while engaging with the community around College Park. I look forward to seeing this initiative continue in the future and greatly appreciate CSVC’s collaboration with Phi Chi Theta.” — Isabel Crocker ‘21

RedBlackConsulting

“I served as UMD AMA’s Vice President of Marketing Consulting for the 2020-2021 academic year and led the AMA’s student-run marketing consulting firm, RedBlack Consulting. I had been connected with the CSVC previously while serving as an Account Manager on RedBlack and had benefited greatly from their advice and mentorship while working with a nonprofit client that they had introduced to our organization. While Vice President of Marketing Consulting, the CSVC introduced another outstanding nonprofit to RedBlack for student consultants to work with and conducted a workshop to teach student consultants about professionalism and relationship management with clients. The CSVC has always been an incredible resource, advising students and providing guidance that has helped enable RedBlack to complete multiple marketing consulting projects, effectively strengthening students’ marketing work as well as having a positive impact on local community organizations.”

Smith Impact Case Competition

“In the winter of 2021, in the midst of a global pandemic, a team of four outstanding leaders in the Smith community arose to discuss the investment feasibility of ExxonMobil in relation to their social impact and financial portfolio. The winning team consisted of Faben Henok, Ajay Shankar, Alex Leipold, and Josh Chen. This was an interesting case competition as it was done completely virtual, from the team meetings, research, and even the competition. This was my first case competition in two years and I was ready to get right on it! Our team was ready the day we received the case and was able to map out when we were available to meet in addition to how were should attempt to approach the case. This case was particularly difficult as we needed to understand not only ExxonMobil but also the industry as a whole from an unbiased perspective. After a week of detailed research to get the full scope of the company and industry, ensuring we are answering the questions in the case adequately, and preparing to present to a panel of judges we felt confident in our presentation. Our team was able to quickly find each other’s strengths and add to them with our own strength which made our bond particularly unbreakable. I am so happy I had the opportunity to do the Smith Impact Case Competition as it taught me presentation, management, and research skills and how to be a more confident and collected young black woman in business. After the success of the Smith Impact Case Competition, my team and I were able to represent the University of Maryland at the Milgard International Case Competition, in which we were able to bring home first place in our presentation regarding the investment opportunity of Carnival Corporation.” Watch the recording here. — Faben Henok ‘21

Supporting theUnited Nations FoundationConsulting

After competing in the Smith Impact Case Competition and the Milgard International Case Competition, our team was eager to keep working together and excited when Nima introduced us to our next opportunity Nothing But Nets is the United Nations Foundation’s grassroots campaign dedicated to fighting malaria through awareness and providing bed nets for those at risk. The organization’s Partnerships Officer, Jonathan Kidwell, enlisted our help to ideate and design employee/stakeholder engagement scenarios for partnerships with three organizations: United States Liability Insurance (USLI), Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), and National Pest Management Association (NPMA). Whereas our recent case competitions had called for highly structured thinking to meet the competitions’ criteria, this opportunity encouraged us to think much more out-of-the-box and provided the chance to make a real-world impact. fter our kickoff session with Jonathan, Ajay, Faben, Josh, and I launched into brainstorming sessions to design a coherent and engaging narrative for each of the three scenarios. For the USLI scenario, we designed the “Around the World” activity, a virtual station-based experience where employees’ children travel from one country (station) to another within their home to be quizzed about the impact of malaria in each respective country and complete exercise challenges related to the questions. The WTA scenario, termed the EmpowerUp Experience, was designed as a partnership between WTA, Nothing But Nets, and GirlUp to offer a motivational experience for participating girls and an educational opportunity about malaria using tennis balls to visualize key statistics and share encouraging messages. Finally, the NPMA scenario gave us the opportunity to design the Nothing But Nets booth at NPMA’s annual PestWorld tradeshow. We developed a plan for an arcade style basketball game to collect donations for Nothing But Nets and encourage friendly competition at the tradeshow. The recommendations for each scenario were well-received, and Jonathan has informed us that the organizations will be implementing many of them for their partnership events. Social Value CreationCase Bank Over the past year, CSVC has been compiling an extensive collection of diverse cases to be used by Faculty in a variety of different subjects. The Social Value Creation Case Bank is composed of over 120 cases from a variety of different sources pertaining to Social Value Creation and DE&I. Some cases touch on climate action, gender equality, sustainability, clean energy, and reduced inequality. These cases, available and disseminated to all faculty chairs, are to be used as a teaching tool in classrooms to demonstrate the importance of creating social value through business. Collecting these cases was a year-long initiative that required extensive, in depth research on topics relevant to classroom instruction. The collection contains a wide range of impact driven cases representative of all business disciplines and categorized by the academic department. Each category has cases pertaining to DE&I specifically due to its importance and relevance across all areas of business. We plan to continuously grow the case bank by conductingresearch and adding updated cases. The case bank also includes a comprehensive case directory that gives a higher-level overview of each case and the related SDG content areas.

Thought Leadership Partners Over the past year CSVC has joined three new international thought leadership partners. These organizations will help expand our mission globally. We look forward to the great collaborations that are to come!

Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME): We are excited to announce that the Robert H. Smith School of Business has recently been accepted as a member of The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). PRME is a United Nations supported initiative that equips today’s business students with the understanding and ability to deliver change. PRME engages business schools to ensure they provide future leaders with the skills needed to balance economic and sustainability goals. PRME draws specific attention to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and aligns academic institutions with the work of the UN Global Compact. The Smith School, along with 800 signatories worldwide, is now a part of the largest organized relationship between the UN and business related higher education institutions. Being a member of PRME will give the Smith School access to a wide variety of resources such as PRME’s Global Forum, PRME innovation challenge, PRME Education Academy Seminar Series, and more.

Creating Value Alliance: The Center for Social Value Creation also partners with the Creating Value Alliance, an international alliance with the goal to spread the value creation mindset. The Creating Value Alliance is an international movement to increase our understanding of the concept of value and to find and promote ways of creating value consciously and more abundantly. This will allow us to operate more effectively, to build social value, and to thrive and be ready for the challenges of a constantly changing world. In addition to partnering with the Smith School, Creating Value Alliance currently has partnerships with schools and centers from the Netherlands, Denmark, and Japan. The Creating Value Alliance hosts global conferences on creating value, offers a Creating Value Certificate, social value articles highlighting CSVC, and more.

Network for Business Sustainability (NBS): The Network for Business Sustainability (NBS) is working to advance sustainable development to assure prosperity for all, today and into the future. NBS members are working to mobilize businesses to contribute to thriving communities and ecosystems by integrating academic research with practical experience. By becoming a member, the Smith School has access to more than 35,000 business leaders, researchers, and students from around the world as well as a community of 170+ sustainability research centers in business schools. Members of NBS are knowledgeable in a wide range of business areas and encourages business leaders and researchers to exchange ideas and push each other’s thinking. These ideas are shared through NBS’ podcasts, articles, reports, and meetings.

OUR TEAM John Chickering, Executive Advisor

John Chickering, MBA ’85, advises boards and senior executives on strategy, technology and operations. As a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, he began his career as a licensed engineer running engine rooms in tankers.

After earning his MBA, Chickering consulted to the maritime industry and authored peer-review thought leadership papers on maritime information management.

Chickering’s career at Fidelity Investments spanned 22 years which included several chief information officer assignments.

He led a multi-year enterprise initiative that transformed complex high-volume customer communications from paper to eDelivery. The work, which spanned across multiple business lines and service providers, improved the customer experience, generated a triple-digit Return on Investment (ROI), and continues to save over 100 acres of forest each year.

Chickering’s board experience includes both fiduciary and advisory boards for both commercial and non-profit institutions where he has held various executive committee positions, including chair.

He is a published author and an occasional speaker at industry conferences and seminars hosted in academia. Chickering volunteers with several community service organizations and has led 15+ hurricane/storm restoration work teams on the ground in Mississippi, New York, Vermont, and Florida.

Kristin Fallon, Executive Advisor

Kristin Fallon is the global head of content and storytelling for GE Healthcare, a $20B medical technology company, where she is responsible for the company’s brand narrative, storytelling, and content marketing. Throughout her career, Fallon has helped non-profits and the private sector meaningfully engage with stakeholders and grow market share — working with innovative technology companies from start-ups to GE, and international development organizations from NGOs to the World Bank. With a deep consulting and entrepreneurial background, and 10+ years living and working outside the US, Fallon is committed to driving impact through a career that delivers innovative technologies and bold solutions. She received her MBA from the Smith School of Business in 2011.

Joanna Ihm, Research & Development Intern

Joanna Ihm is a undergraduate student pursuing a dual degree in information science and operations management & business analytics (OMBA). She is excited by the intersection of emerging technologies and businesses, involving artificial intelligence and business/music data analytics. Her vision for CSVC is to promote the value of research in the Smith community on how businesses can create a positive societal impact. Her favorite pastimes include snowboarding, reading at cafes, designing shoes, and thrifting sustainably with friends.

Gianna Mariani, Digital Media & Marketing Intern

Gianna Mariani is a undergraduate student majoring in marketing and supply chain management. She is fascinated by the way marketing and supply chain management intersect and ultimately impact a consumer’s experience with a brand. She is drawn to anything that allows her to be innovative and creative, and is a member of the Strategic Design and Innovation Fellowship within Smith to further develop her creative skills specifically through the marketing lens. In her free time, Mariani loves to read, listen to podcasts, exercise, or cook with her family.

Lee-Ellen Myles, Graduate Assistant

Lee-Ellen Myles is a dual Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Policy student. Prior to graduate school, Myles supported the University of Maryland’s sustainability initiatives, primarily within the Office of Sustainability and Department of Dining Services. She is passionate about environmental justice, food sustainability and climate change mitigation. Myles enjoys traveling, hiking, visiting farmers markets as well as spending time with her friends, family and pets.

PetersonNjamunge, Graduate Assistant

Peterson Njamunge is a MBA student. Prior to joining Smith, he worked in operations and program management, helping nonprofits leverage technology to improve internal processes and program outcomes. In his free time, Njamunge likes to watch EPL soccer and college basketball.

Prio to his MBA, Njamunge served as the Operations Coordinator of Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

AP Sathe, Graduate Assistant

Apratim Sathe is a recent MBA graduate. Before pursuing his MBA, he worked at Optum, operating in all roles within the software development life cycle (SDLC). He is pursuing an MBA at Smith to refine his big picture skills on strategy, operations, and marketing. He hopes to work in a digital product ownership role upon entering the workforce. In his free time, Apratim likes to travel, workout and spend time with friends.

Anjali Kalra, Research Intern Anjali Kalra is a undergraduate student double majoring in marketing and finance. She was recently inspired to switch her major from biology and join the Smith community after spending the summer interning at Abbott Pharmaceuticals and learning more about their marketing and advertising efforts. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors hammocking, skiing, traveling, and hiking.

Soda Lo, New Projects Development Intern

Soda Lo is a undergraduate student studying international business and operations management business analytics (OMBA) with a minor in global poverty. Her dream would be to work for an international organization providing infrastructural and developmental aid to impoverished West African countries. She immediately felt drawn to the CSVC’s mission statement of “creating a better world through business”, and is excited to coordinate programs that merge business, sustainability, and impact! In her free time, Lo loves to travel, catch up on reading, or hang out with her friends and family.

Crystal Pinckney, Events Management Intern

Crystal Pinckney is a information systems and marketing double major at the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Her passions include entrepreneurship, sustainability, and climate change. She feels most connected with the United Nations sustainable development goal “life below water” as she thinks it is important to preserve marine life.

Pinckney would love to work closely with the United Nations and hopes to also own her own company one day. Her interests include traveling, trying new foods and touring new museums.

Isabella Roccograndi, Chief of Staff Isabella Roccograndi is a Masters in Marketing Analytics student. She recieved her B.S in Marketing with a minor in leadership studies in ‘21.

Her passion for marketing stemmed from her fascination with food packaging, and how the differences in branding can affect a company’s success. She has a passion for social media, graphic design, and living a healthy lifestyle. In her free time, Roccograndi loves to workout, spend time with friends, and go on walks on the B&A trail with her family.

CSVC’S Coalition for Better Business highlights and engages companies and organizations that prioritize the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Environmental, Social, and Governance Goals (ESG), have a keen interest in Maryland Smith students and believe in the good of people, planning, and profit. Formed in early 2018, the coalition helps to refine and enhance better business learning experiences, explore and highlight relevant industry insights, and co-create student engagements that foster the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to advance economic, social and environmental prosperity.
