CSVC ANNUAL REPORT 2021-22

DIRECTOR'S REMARKS Dear Friends, Partners, and Impact-Driven Leaders, As I reflect on this past year, it is with incredible pride in our center, our staff, our partners, our students, and our greater community that I see all we have accomplished together. Everything that we have done in the past year has been centered upon our mission: to educate, engage, and empower the Smith community and the world through thought-provoking dialogue, thought leadership, and hands-on experience. We took our mission to new heights this year, proving that the sky is the limit for CSVC. One of our focal points as a center this year was to create lasting impact with each of our programs and events. With that in mind, we expanded our Impact Consulting Fellowship to have 3 more iterations, giving more than 150 students the opportunity to grow their skills by providing pro-bono consulting work to impact-driven organizations. We launched the Research Impact Fellowship, in which 13 undergraduate students conducted research relating to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals and ultimately were published in our first-ever Journal of Value Creation. We hosted industry experts who spoke to our students, numerous case competitions that gave our students real-world exposure, and partnered with various value creation oriented organizations to further our mission. This year we also held our inaugural ESG Conference. Bringing together 12 engaging speakers and over 100 impact-driven attendees, this conference gave a comprehensive view on several issues in ESG and urged the audience to think creatively for solutions. We are excited to host our second ESG Conference this December.

We would not have been able to accomplish what we have in this past year if it wasn't for our dedicated Board of Directors, Faculty Affiliates, and Staff. Each member of these teams contributes tremendously to our center, from event execution to classroom engagement and long-term planning. We also would not be where we are today if it was not for our generous donors. This year, we raised a record-high amount of money for our center during the year. On Giving Day 2022, we also had the second highest amount of individual donors within Maryland Smith. We thank each of our donors for their generosity, allowing us to continue our mission and put forth the initiatives outlined in this report. I am excited to see what this next year brings as we continue to grow. We look forward to expanding our presence in education and academics, publishing further research on value creation, and so much more. If you are interested in joining us, our door is always open.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP Courses Social Innovation Fellows In this year-long program, students learn about the role of both entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship in driving positive social and environmental change in business. Research Impact Fellowship In June 2021, CSVC launched our first-ever multi-disciplinary undergraduate research program, the Research Impact Fellowship (RIF). Under the mentorship and guidance of esteemed faculty and industry professionals, our 13 fellows were able to complete intensive research studies on a topic of their choosing throughout the 8 weeks of the program. This process, including a speaker series and one-on-one review sessions, has enabled our students to develop greater problem-solving skills, deepen their understanding of social value strategies, and pioneer creative solutions. At the conclusion of RIF, each research paper completed by our fellows was published in the Journal of Social Value Creation. The Journal of Social Value Creation serves as a testament to our students' dedication towards not only their chosen topics, but also their commitment to expanding and challenging the current pool of knowledge related to social value creation.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE Case Competitions We hosted a variety of case competitions throughout the year to provide substantial, applicable experience for students outside of the classroom.

Global Goals Jam Global Goals Jam is an international event that over 85 cities in the world have taken part in with the goal of tackling pressing local sustainability challenges, guided by the UN Global Goals. College Park joined this list of cities when CSVC brought Global Goals Jam to the University of Maryland for the first time ever during September of 2021. During the 2021 College Park Global Goals Jam, multidisciplinary teams joined forces for a three-day design thinking case competition focused the SDGs. Participants connected with local leaders, including College Park Mayor Patrick Wojahn, to catalyze solutions for a more equitable and sustainable transportation system in our community. This immersive case competition provided networking opportunities to students, enabling them to work together to propose solutions to the Grand Challenges of our time with limited time and resources.

Impact Competition IImpact Competition is a collegiate case competition that addresses a unique social issue each year, often by directly partnering and donating to with a local non-profit. The competition provides a financial incentive for teams of students to brainstorm effective solutions for the most pressing issues affecting the communities they live in, with the winning team receiving a cash prize. This year, CSVC hosted Impact Competition at Maryland Smith, opening the competition up to teams of talented undergraduate and masters students. The case's challenge was rooted in supply chain, finance, and logistics, with the end product being a proposed transportation implementation plan for local non-profit Lighthouse D.C. This year's Impact Competition was a great success from student engagement to a donation to Lighthouse D.C.

Smith Invitational Case Competition The Smith Invitational Case Competition is an ESG-focused competition hosted annually during winter break by CSVC. This year, 8 teams of 4 students were selected to compete for the chance to win a cash prize and advance to represent Maryland Smith on the national stage at the Milgard Invitational Case Competition on Social Responsibility. The case was centered on measuring social impact and providing strategic, long-term advice for a fictional company.

The case focused on proposing solutions for Tropicana, a global leader in the orange juice market, who were looking to raise awareness of the challenges facing the orange juice industry and their farmers plus create authentic change. Student teams were assigned a mentor from PepsiCo and ultimately presented their solutions in front of a panel of judges in hopes of winning.

Business, Society and the Economy Case Competition Every year, CSVC and the Business Society and the Economy (BSE) Scholars Program partner to host a case competition specifically designed for freshman BSE students. The case is carefully curated to introduce students to case competitions, spark thought and discussion about corporate social responsibility and business sustainability, and encourage teamwork from the start of each student's collegiate career.

Phi Chi Theta Case Competition CSVC partners with Phi Chi Theta, a professional fraternity, every semester to host a case competition that all new members participate in. This competition provides early exposure to case competitions, encourages critical thinking on issues of value creation and sustainability, and typically is in partnership with a local nonprofit or organization to provide real, positive change.
