Who Do We Classify as a Helper/Healer?

• Defining a Helper/Healer role is societally/culturally-based and can vary across cultures and countries. In the US, we typically think of: • Professions such as: • Doctors, nurses, psychiatrics, psychologists, social workers, therapists, counselors, mental health and medical technicians/ aides, hotline workers, child protective service workers, first responders, hospice care providers • It's important to note that although our focus is on the vocations listed above, there are other helpers/healers in more non-traditional roles who face similar stressors. For example: • Alternative medicine practitioners, clergy, foster/adoptive parents, respite care parents/workers, family caregivers, live-in caretakers, paraprofessionals in medical and mental health settings, volunteers, etc.

• Holding space for the healing of others can result in significant impacts for the well-being of the helper/healer.

• Balancing personal well-being, job satisfaction, and professional success in positions that are demanding and stressful.

• Managing work responsibilities and the emotional toll of caring for others can feel overwhelming and isolating!

• COVID-19 stress • Contracted COVID-19 herself, but returned to work when able to continue helping/healing • Died by suicide • Dr Breen's family has established the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes Foundation.
