s Centennial Center Park celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, Centennial’s first Cityowned park will soon gain additional enhancements to further distinguish this award-winning landmark and bring additional features for the community.

The 11-acre Centennial Center Park opened in 2012 and features worldclass amenities including a splash pad, amphitheater, playgrounds, covered shelters and shade structures, paved and unpaved walking trails and many more attractions. A plant-lover’s delight, the park also showcases natural elements and native plants.

Last Fall, the City began expanding Centennial Center Park to the south.

This $4 million project will bring new and enhanced features to the park.

The expansion will be completed in several phases in the coming months.

Holly St., or Centennial Public Works Facility, 7272 S. Eagle St. Bring tree limbs and woody plant materials for recycling. Lumber, salvage materials or rounds larger than 10 inches in diameter will not be accepted.

Free mulch will be available at the Willow Spring Service Center throughout the event, and the Public Works Facility will have mulch available starting at noon, while supplies last. Bring a tarp and shovel.

Centennial received a grant from the Colorado Department of Local affairs to explore housing options and accessibility in the City. This project will involve a Needs Assessment conducted during the first half of 2022 that quantifies the available housing in Centennial as well as extensive public outreach throughout the year to understand the needs of our community. Enhance Your Neighborhood and Spur Connection with Community Grants The City is once again offering a two-part Community Grant Program in 2022. Don’t miss these opportunities for funding assistance to improve community engagement, strengthen neighborhood identity and enhance neighborhood collaboration. These programs are intended to reduce code violations and spur additional private investment within neighborhoods through the support of resident-led improvement projects and engagement opportunities. Neighborhood Engagement Grants • Grants up to $500 awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted • Application period opens April 1

The Neighborhood Engagement Grant program provides grants up to $500 to residents, HOAs and community organizations located in Centennial to support community-building events such as neighborhood block parties, movie nights and social gatherings.

Large Community Improvement Grants • Select proposals awarded grants up to $10,000 • Application period: March 1-April 17 The Large Community Improvement Grant program supports larger-scale, community-based improvements such as neighborhood signage, fencing, landscaping enhancements, place making and community gardens, among others. Groups may submit proposals to be considered for a limited number of grants totaling up to $10,000 per project.

City Hires Chief Building Official

Citizens Elect Mayor and 4 Council Members Centennial’s sitting Mayor, three incumbent City Council Members and one newly elected City Council Member were selected by voters in November 2021 to represent the City of Centennial.

Stephanie Piko was re-elected for her second mayoral term. Council Member Robyn Carnes was newly elected to serve District 1 following the departure of the Honorable Kathy Turley who was termlimited. Tammy Maurer, Mike Sutherland and Marlo Alston were re-elected for their second four-year terms as Council Members serving Districts 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The officials were sworn into office on January 5.

Centennial’s City Council consists of the Mayor and eight Council Members, two from each of the City’s four districts.

The City is undergoing a transition of Building Services and has hired a new Chief Building Official to lead a team of 10 employees. The City’s Building Division is responsible for reviewing, permitting and inspecting all physical structures within the City.

T ransform Your Business To Become Disruption-Proof

The City of Centennial’s Spark Centennial Experience Accelerator inspires local businesses, entrepreneurs and creatives to reshape their business value by building meaningful customer connections through for-sale experiences. The program is a sandbox to create, prototype and test experiential ideas and new business models. Program benefits include a multi-day workshop, field trips, mentorship, access to networks, as well as opportunities to secure prototype and business funding.

The playground, coffee shelter, existing restroom and amphitheater remain open during construction.

The portions of the park under construction are separated by perimeter fencing for the community’s protection and to safeguard construction equipment from vandalism and theft.

City Powers Fleet with EV Additions The City of Centennial continues to implement its Electric Vehicle (EV) Action Plan.

Two plug-in hybrid electric vehicles have been purchased, and charging stations have been installed at the Centennial Civic Center, for City fleet vehicle use.

City’s Transportation System To Become More ‘Intelligent’ Traffic signal timing at intersections along several major corridors throughout the City will soon adapt to real-time vehicle volume and patterns, weather, crashes and other changing conditions. The traffic signal timing will automatically adjust based on data collected from a network of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies including roadway and intersection detection technologies.

New Traffic Management Center staff will also be able to monitor closed-circuit television cameras, weather station information systems and anonymized, cumulative travel time information.

The new adaptive traffic signals and staffing are part of an ongoing program to improve traffic flow on Centennial’s busiest roads through ITS technologies connected to the City’s fiber backbone. An additional plug-in hybrid and four fully electric vehicles are planned to be added this spring.

Up to three months of rent, mortgage and utility assistance is available to help alleviate short-term financial stress related to housing needs. This program is administered through Arapahoe County.

Construction Underway on Arapahoe Road Bridge The project to replace the Arapahoe Road bridge over Big Dry Creek near the intersection of University Boulevard has begun. This project is expected to take approximately 1 ½ years to complete. During that time, the City will continue to keep local residents informed of traffic advisories and construction progress.
