Centennial NEXT is Centennial’s City-wide Comprehensive Plan that will guide the City’s approach to preserving, enhancing, and growing our neighborhoods in a way that promotes mutual prosperity, coordinated public investment, and a healthy environment. The Plan promotes quality of life, a sense of community, economic vitality, supporting infrastructure, and responsible government that will leave a legacy for future generations. City Council adopted this plan on November 5. Learn more about the plan online at centennialco.gov/ centennialnext.

Residents shared with us what is most important to them about Centennial:
FIBER BACKBONE PROGRESS CITY EXECUTES NEW LEASE The City of Centennial and Avata Networks have executed a lease agreement along the central ring of Centennial’s fiber optic backbone. Avata Networks will be leasing one pair of fibers along with more than 12,000 feet of City-owned fiber network. Initially the lease is for one year with the option to add up to four additional years. Avata Networks’ focus will be to serve the City’s central businesses and residents with enhanced gigabit speed internet starting in early 2019. In 2016, City Council allocated $5.7 million to implement the City’s Fiber Master Plan
and build a 432-fiber strand backbone through the City. The approximately 50-mile fiber backbone is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2018 and will connect and complete the City’s underground infrastructure. Centennial’s backbone will enable both existing and new broadband providers the ability to execute dark fiber leases with the City to deliver superior and more competitive choices and services for consumers. For more information about the City’s FiberWorks program, visit centennialco.gov/fiber.
FLIPPING THE SWITCH RESIDENTIAL GIGABIT BROADBAND SERVICE NOW LIVE Centennial’s Mayor, City Council and Fiber Commission celebrated the official flipping of the switch to begin residential gigabit broadband service Sept. 6. A home in Willow Creek was the first to connect with Ting, a highspeed internet provider that signed an agreement in March to lease 12 fibers from the City’s 432-strand fiber backbone.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
EFFICIENT TRAFFIC FLOW
YOSEMITE ST. PILOT PROJECT The City of Centennial is deploying innovative technology to improve traffic flow on the City’s busiest roads. Centennial is implementing its Intelligent Transportation System — or ITS — an integrated communications system that connects to the City’s fiber network and Traffic Operations Center. Part of this implementation involves the installation of 64 closed-circuit cameras at high-traffic intersections and travel-time monitoring equipment on major corridors. These cameras are for real-time traffic monitoring, not surveillance. Recently the cities of Centennial, Greenwood Village and Lone Tree identified a pilot project to take a crossjurisdictional approach to managing and reducing traffic congestion. Specifically, the cities are working to create a connected, data-driven, multi-jurisdictional traffic management plan for Yosemite Street between Lincoln Avenue and Belleview Avenue that promotes efficient and safe traffic flow through the installation of sensors at traffic signals.
DATA-DRIVEN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
RESPONSIVE TRAFFIC SIGNALS
“Alleviating traffic congestion and improving safety and efficiency is a consistent issue cities throughout the south metro Denver area continuously address,” says Centennial Mayor Stephanie Piko. “Partnering with our neighboring cities on this pilot program is ideal before each of us invest in technology for traffic management.” A private sensor vendor, Blyncsy, has secured a grant to facilitate the installation of their sensors in Centennial and Lone Tree (Greenwood Village already has similar sensors in place) to monitor traffic and collect volumes, travel times, and delay (time spent waiting at a signal). The data collected will directly serve the City’s pilot project with Greenwood Village and Lone Tree. After the adaptive technology is deployed and the software starts tweaking the signal timing, the entities can measure the effectiveness of the pilot project by comparing the before and after conditions.
SAFER TRAVEL
CONNECTED, CROSS-JURISDICTIONAL APPROACH
A successful pilot will prove emerging technology can be applied to traffic signals to benefit businesses, commuters, and residents alike, and will set a precedent for all future efforts our cities undertake. 3
