he 14th Annual State of Our City Address took place Thursday, April 12 at the Embassy Suites in Centennial.

Mayor Stephanie Piko’s address focused on community connectedness and innovation.

She highlighted how the connections within our community and region provide us with the exciting opportunity to build collaborative partnerships that not only strengthen our community but provide our residents and businesses a sense of pride in calling Centennial home. Key innovations mentioned in the speech included the City’s FiberWorks program, Worker Studio Animation’s virtual reality show, Cosmo, the partnership between Lost Highway and Jacobs that turns reclaimed water into beer, and the work the Cherry School Foundation and Arrow are doing to create a generation of innovators in our community. LUAU KICK-OFF EVENT

Are you prepared to protect yourself against fraud and identity theft? Attend a presentation from 18th Judicial Consumer Fraud Protection Director Barbara Martin-Worley and Arapahoe Sheriff Inspector Antonio Hernandez to learn strategies to prevent being a victim.

CELEBRATE AMERICA

Join us for a fun-filled morning with special guest Thomas Jefferson. We will celebrate Independence Day early with light refreshments, fun and informative entertainment.

LEGENDARY LADIES

Thursday, July 19 - 1:30 to 3 pm

Spend the afternoon with five Legendary Ladies. Centennial Active Seniors will be hosting an afternoon tea with Women’s Suffragist Ellis Meredith, Zoo Manager Mary Elitch Long, Frontier Physician Susan Anderson, Frontierswoman Calamity Jane and American Baseball Bloomer Girl Pitcher Maud Nelson.

BIRDS OF PREY

Thursday, August 2 - 10 to 11:30 am

Bring your grandkids, neighbors and friends for this amazing presentation and get up close with an eagle, owl, falcon and hawk. Weather permitting, a flight demonstration is also included in this exciting event!

CAREGIVING: HOW CAN WE BE MORE PROACTIVE? Thursday, August 9 - 6:30 to 8 pm This informative discussion led by nationally recognized caregiving expert and Caregiving for the GENIUS author Jane Barton will discuss the journey everyone takes as a caregiver and/or care receiver. Learn how to care for yourself and others “by design, not by default.”

Three outstanding Centennial high school students were recognized by City Council with Youth Achievement Awards in April. These Awards honor Centennial youth who have made a significant impact on the community through volunteer work or other special deeds that demonstrate exceptional leadership. The winners received $1,000 scholarships. The Centennial Youth Commission and the City of Centennial’s Building Services provider, SAFEbuilt, provided $1,500 each to recognize these outstanding youth in the community. The 2018 Youth Achievement winners are:

SPENCER CHRISTENSEN

Mr. Christensen is a senior at Arapahoe High School. He serves on the National Leadership Council, as an after school tutor, a Link Crew member to mentor freshman at Arapahoe High School, and has volunteered for Littleton Stride races to help raise money for the Littleton Public Schools Foundation. On a mission trip, he helped build a senior citizen dining room and taught English to students in Guatemala. Mr. Christensen has helped more than 700 children with resources and reading opportunities by volunteering 500 hours at the Southglenn Library.

Last year he was awarded the Congressional Award Gold Medal for his volunteer service to the community.

RAFAEL LEVY-DINER

Mr. Levy-Diner is a senior at Arapahoe High School and volunteers by serving food at the Denver Rescue Mission. He also plays croquet, through the Jiminy Wicket program, with older adults who have dementia. He developed a close relationship with one of the participants and volunteered his time outside of the program for weekly visits even as the man’s disease progressed resulting in several different housing moves.

Mr. Levy-Diner currently serves as President of the Arapahoe High School Key Club and the Class Representative for the Littleton School and District Accountability Committee.

ALLIE WENNERSTROM

Ms. Wennerstrom is a senior at Arapahoe High School. She has volunteered for three years as a peer intern helping provide individual instruction to fellow students and has volunteered at Camp Barnabas, a program dedicated to helping students with special needs and volunteered on a mission trip to Mexico. She serves as a coach for the Arapahoe High School Unified Basketball team, helping students with physical and mental disabilities. As a junior, she started the Arapahoe High School Unified Track team and recruited local police officers, firefighters and area businesses to support the new group. Ms. Wennerstrom also serves as volunteer for students with autism and speech impediments at the Joshua School.

The Jacobs’ Centennial electronics recycling event in April was a success. Centennial residents donated 41,345 pounds (nearly 21 tons!) of electronics. Residents who recycled were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for this free service, and nearly all the recyclers participated! Thanks to these generous donations, staff collected a total of 2,019 items, equivalent to 1,979 pounds of food, which was donated to the Food Bank of the Rockies on behalf of the Centennial Youth Commission.

SPLASH PAD HOURS Memorial Day - Labor Day 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.

The splash pad at the award-winning Centennial Center Park opens Memorial Day weekend and will operate from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. through Labor Day. Centennial Center Park is perfect for celebrations and reservations are filling up fast. The Park is equipped with picnic tables, newly expanded restrooms, six barbecue grills, sun shades and benches. When planning your visit to the Park, please be aware the following items are prohibited unless a permit is issued by the City: • Alcoholic beverages • Selling goods or services • Amplified sound • Tents more than 25 square feet (not larger than 5 x 5) • Stages, obstacle courses, inflatable toys, jumpers, etc.

• Smoking is only allowed in designated areas around outer edges of park

CENTENNIAL CENTER PARK MASTER PLAN PROVIDE YOUR INPUT! The City is seeking feedback for the Centennial Center Park Master Plan. This Master Plan looks to expand and enhance the existing Park by providing additional amenity zones, such as a passive park with trees and shade structures, a multi-use court, a sledding hill, and a mural wall among others.

FIREWORKS REMINDER Centennial residents may use and possess fireworks that do not explode, leave the ground or fly through the air. For example, sparklers, cones, snakes and fountains are allowed. The sale of all forms of fireworks in Centennial is prohibited. The use and possession of all forms of fireworks continue to not be allowed in parks and open spaces in the City. Remember, fireworks can be dangerous. Please be safe and responsible.

CENTENNIAL NEXT PLAN NEARLY COMPLETE The City is in the final stretch of updating its comprehensive plan, Centennial NEXT. Expect an opportunity to provide feedback on the draft plan near the end of July/early August. Visit centennialco.gov/centennialnext to check it out.

Calling all K-5th graders! Join District 4 Council Member Marlo Alston as she reads her favorite books followed by crafts. Reading with Marlo will take place on Saturdays June 23, July 7 and July 28 at Smoky Hill Library Community Room B from 10-11 am.

Don’t Forget to License Your Pet!

The City of Centennial is committed to protecting, promoting and enhancing the safety, health and quality of life of citizens and animals through proactive enforcement of animal related laws and responsible pet ownership and education. Here are a few friendly reminders: 1. Please remember all dogs over the age of six months need to be licensed with the City.

2. All dogs and cats must wear a collar with a readable tag or microchip implanted while off the premises of the owner’s home, which allows Animal Services to identify the pet owner should they be separated.

3. All dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated against rabies by six months of age.

Licenses may be obtained and submitted online at centennialco.gov/licensepet.

CENTENNIAL FIBERWORKS ON SCHEDULE The City's FiberWorks program remains within budget and on schedule to complete the 50mile fiber backbone by the end of 2018. When complete, the fiber backbone will connect and complete the City's underground infrastructure, connecting to key City sites and other community anchor institutions.

In March, the City and Ting Internet executed an agreement for Ting's lease of fibers in the central ring of Centennial's fiber optic backbone. Ting will lease 12 fibers from the City's 432 strand fiber backbone for a term of 20 years. Ting is currently building out connections to residents in the Willow Creek, Walnut Hills and Hunter Hills neighborhoods with plans to expand throughout the City. STREET SWEEPING & REHAB STAY IN THE KNOW Spring street sweeping will continue through May until all public streets are swept. Street rehabilitation will continue through October this year.

By checking the City website and/or signing up for notifications you can stay informed of when your street may be swept or rehabilitated. Renew your license plates at 20 kiosks statewide Contributed By Matt Crane, Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder

Centennial residents now have the option to renew their vehicle registration at any of 20 Colorado MVExpress kiosks across the state, and skip a wait at the DMV. Whether you commute to Colorado Springs or attend college in Grand Junction, you can use any kiosk along the way. It’s fast and easy, and you’ll walk away with your registration and tabs in minutes. The kiosks are available in Arapahoe, Adams, Boulder, Broomfield, Douglas, El Paso, Fremont, Jefferson, La Plata, Larimer, Mesa and Weld Counties. You must live in one of these participating counties to use a kiosk. Please wait at least two business days after getting an emissions test or updating your auto insurance before you renew at a kiosk. Find the nearest location and more information at www.arapahoegov.com/kiosk.
