Advisors Capital Management: Inflation, Interest Rates and an Invasion

Both fixed-income and equity investors came into 2022 concerned about rising interest rates and inflation. Then the Russian invasion of Ukraine occurred, forcing investors to consider the significant humanitarian, geopolitical and economic impacts of a major military conflict. Clearly, the combined effects of rising interest rates, high inflation and the invasion of Ukraine make the current investment environment challenging. However, we do think a disciplined fixedincome approach that is focused on taking only moderate levels of interest rate and credit risk can be effective while such investment uncertainty persists.

The Pacific Financial Group: Weekly Manager’s Pulse

U.S. equities fell last week as inflation hit a fresh 40-year high and investors worried about the impact of the Russian war on Ukraine on global growth. Consumer staple stocks underperformed as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and other food and consumer products makers announced they were suspending business in Russia. Ultimately, the S&P 500 ended last week -2.84% lower. Global sovereign yields also jumped despite continuing volatility. In the U.S., the 2-Year and 10Year Treasury yields increased to 1.75% and 2.00%, respectively. A surge in commodity prices as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict seemed to dominate sentiment during the week. The escalation was most visible to consumers in oil prices, which reached $139 per barrel. Ultimately, WTI and Brent finished at $109.33 and $112.67 per barrel, respectively.

SEM: Avoid, Embrace, Engage

Everyone has values. People will often align different areas of their lives based on these values. An area people often forget to align with their values is their investments. Values-based investing has become more popular in recent years. A specific type is Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI). Figuring out what to invest in can be a daunting task. Tasty Brands, like the broader quick-service restaurant industry, was tested in many ways in 2021, but its resiliency, stability and value proposition yielded robust financial performance and continued growth. Both Burger King and Pizza Hut portfolio companies continue to execute key strategic initiatives across all aspects of the business, while investments in people, assets and the guest experience underpin the results. Tasty Brands has demonstrated its ability to innovate and adapt to outside forces by developing and implementing strategies to drive sales, pass through cost increases and realize strong conversion of incremental sales to bottom-line profitability.

Vinebrook Homes Trust: Buys Portfolio of Single-Family Rental Homes

Vinebrook Homes Trust Inc., a private real estate investment trust managed by an affiliate of NexPoint Real Estate Advisors, has purchased a portfolio of approximately 3,000 single-family rental homes for approximately $354.2 million, excluding closing costs.

The properties are diversified across eight states, with the largest concentration in the southeastern United States, including Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Mississippi. Others are in Missouri and New Mexico.

Bluerock: Announces First Quarter Dividends

Bluerock Residential Growth REIT, Inc. (NYSE American: BRG) (the “Company”) announced that its Board of Directors has authorized and the Company has declared quarterly cash dividends on the Company’s Class A common stock (the “Class A Common Stock”) and the Company’s Class C common stock (the “Class C Common Stock”) for the first quarter of 2022, in each case in the amount of $0.1625 per share (collectively, the “Common Dividends”). In addition, the Board of Directors has authorized and the Company has declared a quarterly cash dividend on the Company’s 7.625% Series C Cumulative Redeemable Preferred Stock (the “Series C Preferred Stock”) for the first quarter of 2022, in the amount of $0.4765625 per share (the “Series C Preferred Dividend”).

Allianz: Ukraine Invasion

On February 24th, 2022 Russian armed forces attacked Ukraine. The ongoing invasion is first and foremost a human tragedy and Allianz has been clear in its opposition to this unprovoked attack. As a secondary topic after the humanitarian concerns, the invasion poses a complex threat to the operations of financial services companies and has some enormous consequences for the financial markets in the short-term. Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) experts highlight some of the initial impacts they see for the financial services space.

Transamerica: Aegon Condemns Aggression in Ukraine

Aegon strongly condemns the aggression against the sovereign country of Ukraine, and we add our voice to international demands for an immediate cessation of violence.

“The unjustifiable violence unleashed on Ukraine and its people has shocked and saddened us as individuals and as a company. Our hearts go out to them and everyone who wants to live in peace and freedom,” said Aegon CEO Lard Friese. Aegon is committed to being a force for good. We recognize this is not a war instigated by the Russian people, and we firmly condemn the aggression ordered by the Russian government. The world thrives and prospers when people of all nationalities and opinions come together in mutual respect to collaborate for positive outcomes that benefit everyone.

Pacific Life: A Global Impact

Ukraine remains a significant exporter of metals and grains, while Russia also exports oil and gas. Outside Ukraine and Russia, Europe is the most exposed to the disruption, as Russia supplies Europe with 40% of its gas and about a quarter of its oil. The rest of the world will feel the economic impact through higher commodity prices, which would further boost inflation and hurt growth. The decision to block Russian banks from SWIFT may lead to missed payments and overdrafts within the international banking system. This scenario will spur major central banks to supply the market with dollars, which means the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) may have to expand its balance sheet again right before it had planned to end its bond purchases. Furthermore, the Fed and other major central banks may become less hawkish on interest-rate hikes. At this point, a 50 basis-point hike in March is highly unlikely as a result of this conflict.

Athene: A Steady Retirment Paycheck to Withstand Any Market Condition

Fewer than 4 in 10 of American adults who aren’t yet retired feel that their retirement savings are on track, according to The Federal Reserve Board. And nearly 6 in 10 with self-directed retirement savings expressed low levels of comfort in making investment decisions with their accounts. Although financial preparedness for retirement seemed to increase the closer they were to retiring, those near retirement age still felt concerned that what they had saved may not be enough.
