Dear participants,

BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON OFFICIAL PROGRAM

2

This year more than ever, I am delighted to welcome you to the 43rd running of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. When the final runner crossed the finish line in 2019, we never imagined that it would be 728 days until we had participants cross our finish line in Grant Park again. I am thrilled that the time to run together has finally come. Chicago is your start line.

CAREY PINKOWSKI Executive Race Director Bank of America Chicago Marathon

Marathons are transformative. Think back to how you felt when you started training for this race. Distances that seemed insurmountable at the start of your training might now feel short. Challenges that seemed impossible might now feel attainable. On Sunday, October 10, you will find yourself transformed once more. Marathons ask you to dig deep, to find a new level of motivation that pushes you to keep going even when it feels like it will never end. You will emerge on the other side of the start and finish lines a new person: a person who knows that with grit, determination and a refusal to give up, you can accomplish incredible things. Whether this is your first or last marathon or one of many marathons in between, you will learn new lessons about yourself during the 26.2 miles you are about to run. Race day is a celebration of your new start line: You endured so much over the last year to get here. We are eager to celebrate your hard work and commitment during a time of not knowing. Many of you pivoted to virtual races and now you are pivoting back to in-person races. We are excited to welcome you to Chicago, to experience one of the most iconic races in the world, which traverses 29 neighborhoods, and to follow your journey from the start line to the finish line. This is a historic moment for our race and for the endurance sports industry. Running shoulder-to-shoulder with athletes from across the country and around the world on a course lined with spectators is part of what makes major marathons, including this one, the events they are. It is also the very reason we had to wait until this year to stage the Chicago Marathon again. Now that we can safely gather with one another, I look forward to cheering for you as you chase your goals through the streets of Chicago. The world has changed, but our commitment to your health and safety has not. You are our top priority, and we know that we can count on you to do your part to keep race volunteers, staff and your fellow athletes safe. Your continued cooperation and participation will ensure that this will be an enjoyable and meaningful race for everyone. On behalf of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon staff, the Bank of America, the City of Chicago, our sponsors and volunteers: welcome back. We are so excited to see you again.

Sincerely,

Dear Friends: We’re proud to host the 43rd running of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. This iconic event is a symbol of our enduring commitment to, and support of, the city of Chicago—and the people and communities that make it great. We’re excited to celebrate the return of the race and to once again welcome runners, volunteers, supporters and fans from all over the world together, while maintaining a focus on health and safety.

BRIAN MOYNIHAN Chief Executive Officer Bank of America

On behalf of all of our Bank of America teammates, it’s an honor to be part of this special event. Good luck to all the runners, and enjoy the race!

Sincerely,

PAUL T. LAMBERT Chicago Market President Bank of America

BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON OFFICIAL PROGRAM

A special thank you to those of you who are running for the benefit of a charity. Over the past decade, runners have raised more than $208 million during the Chicago Marathon for 170 charitable causes. That spirit of philanthropy gives added meaning to this race, and helps make a lasting impact for communities in Chicago and beyond.

Thank you to everyone who has helped to make the 2021 Bank of America Chicago Marathon possible.

THE START LINE OF THE RETURN TO RACING The 43rd running of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is the first U.S. Abbott World Marathon Major to return inperson in 2021. After a year off, it will be the ultimate celebration of the hard work, ingenuity and effort shown by everyone to reach the start line of this year’s race.

Chicago’s familiar streets and diverse running community will welcome each participant upon landing in our city. The physical start line represents not only the start of 26.2, but a fresh beginning for each runner’s journey and what it took to get them there. The landmarks around the start line and throughout the course

showcase the city, and at each point on the course represent the opportunity to start again and be transformed by the experience. From first-timers to those who toe our line year after year, Chicago Marathoners know this is the people’s race, and that Chicago is their start line.

ABOUT THE LANDMARKS As participants gather race morning, a feeling of tension and anxiety combined with excitement and drive will fill the air. After a year without the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, participants will once again line up on Columbus Drive awaiting the start of one of the greatest marathons in the world.

As each participant prepares to take on the road ahead, we encourage everyone to pause, take in their environment and reflect on the miles that brought them to this moment. Continue reading to learn more about the landmarks that will greet you at your start line.

As participants, event staff and volunteers arrive in Chicago and head toward Grant Park for race weekend festivities, they will pass The Art Institute of Chicago on Michigan Avenue and see the two large, green lions that pose on the front steps of the museum. Over the years, the lions have become mascots for Chicago, being dressed in various sports jerseys and for different holidays. However, many don’t realize the lions date back to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, known as the World’s Fair; the Art Institute building was the only structure built outside of Jackson Park for the Fair, and one of the few that wasn’t destroyed, according to according to PBS station WTTW. The lions were installed in May 1894, and each lion weighs over two tons and has its own personality. The northern lion was designed with his mouth open and “on the prowl,” while the southern lion was “modeled in attitude of defiance.”

NAVY PIER FERRIS WHEEL Similar to the lions, the iconic Ferris wheel that is recognizable in the Chicago skyline dates back to the World’s Fair. The first wheel was built in 1893, was 264 feet tall and built to rival the newly completed Eiffel Tower in Paris. In 1995, a new, smaller Ferris wheel was built on Navy Pier at 150 feet tall, inspired by the original at the World’s Fair. The ride could hold 240 passengers at a time and was the main attraction of Navy Pier until 2016, when a new one was built in honor of the pier’s 100th anniversary. The current Ferris wheel that stands at 600 E. Grand Avenue is 50 feet taller than the one it replaced and has enclosed, climatecontrolled gondolas so guests can enjoy rides year-round.

13

The Aon Center stands out as one of the taller buildings in Chicago’s famous skyline. In fact, the commercial office at 200 East Randolph Street is the fourth-tallest building in Chicago, surpassed only by the Willis Tower, Trump International Hotel and Tower, and St. Regis Chicago. However, when it was built in 1973, it was the Standard Oil Building: the second tallest in Chicago and the world, earning its nickname “Big Stan.” It stands out in Chicago’s skyline with its distinct, vertical pinstripes; architects Perkins + Will used a relatively new, tube-based structural form for the tower. A similar form was also used in the Willis (Sears) Tower, under construction at the same time.

BUCKINGHAM FOUNTAIN After crossing the Bank of America Chicago Marathon finish line, participants will continue down Columbus and pass by Buckingham Fountain, which is considered one of the finest ornamental fountains in America, according to the Chicago Park District. Siblings Kate Sturges Buckingham and Clarence Buckingham were art collectors in the Chicagoland area in the late 1800s through the early 1910s. When Clarence

passed in 1913, Kate decided to fund the construction of the fountain in his memory. She requested the fountain to emulate a soft moonlight, and she worked with technicians to find the perfect blend of color and light. The fountain has three pumps with enough horsepower for more than 14,000 gallons of water per minute combined. It also has 133 jets and can hold 1.5 million gallons of water. The city’s central business district, and many of its iconic tourist attractions, are all located within walking, running

or biking distance of the Chicago Marathon’s start and finish in Grant Park. Best places to run: This is the midpoint of the Chicago Lakefront Trail; you can head either north for more crowds and beaches, or south in search of solitude and natural landscapes. If you start near Grant Park and follow the path in a circle around the Shedd Aquarium, you can log a mile-and-a-half loop that includes one of the most breathtaking views of the skyline—a favorite of November Project’s Kaitlyn Kooyers.

LOCAL ARTIST HIGHLIGHT: EMMA COOK Emma Cook is the artist behind this year’s campaign design and has been the graphic designer for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and other Chicago Event Management races since 2015. However, she has been interested in art since she was little. When her mother recognized her talent and passion, she signed Emma up for art classes. “I lucked out; I had a really cool teacher who was a secondgeneration impressionist artist who taught me from middle

school through high school. She trained me classically and inspired me to study graphic design and art at Loyola,” Emma says. Like many artists, the last year has given Emma more time to explore her passion and experiment with new techniques. Currently, she’s interested in ink drawing and digital art, and has been playing with color and texture in those forms. “I derive a lot from nature and people, women especially. The Art Nouveau era in the early 20th century and the late 19th century is really my inspiration right now,” she adds.

When designing the look and feel for this year’s campaign, Emma wanted to play off this technique and create something that was a combination of design and illustration. While she wanted the landmarks to be recognizable, she also wanted them to be interesting and accessible. “I got back into drawing during COVID; I realized I hadn’t been practicing for a long time and I want to help people create unique brands using illustration.” Check out Emma’s other work by following her on Instagram at @emmaecook_art.

EXECUTIVE RACE DIRECTOR CAREY PINKOWSKI STANDS ON HIS OWN START LINE As executive race director of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Carey Pinkowski advocates for both the event and its participants. After a year away from in-person racing, he looks forward to cheering participants on as they gather again in Grant Park to start their 26.2-mile journey through Chicago.

WHAT HAVE YOU MISSED THE MOST ABOUT A YEAR WITHOUT EVENTS?

I have missed the personal connection with our participants, our volunteers and everyone who has made the Bank of America Chicago Marathon the event it is today. When we paused our events last year, I realized why I enjoy doing this so much and why I’ve done it for as long as I have. The planning is challenging but solving those challenges as a team has an intrinsic payoff

and the energy you get from our participants on race day is unparalleled. I’ve started going back out to training runs, and when you meet people who are gearing up for their first marathon, they have this genuine enthusiasm that gets me excited for the event. There’s a bit of apprehension too, but it’s truly rewarding to be part of their journey.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT THE 2021 BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON?

I keep calling this a transition year. We’re transitioning from not having any events to coming back, and I’m looking forward to the return of our event and the community that gathers in Chicago during marathon weekend. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon in so many

ways is a reflection of the human spirit, and I’m excited to reconnect after a year off and celebrate our participants as they express themselves in the purest form.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON MEMORY?

Actually, it’s 2019 because it was such a great day on so many levels. We had a record number of finishers, our charity program fundraised a record amount of money and then we obviously had Brigid Kosgei set the World Record; we truly hit benchmarks in all areas. I think back to how I had the opportunity to help orchestrate five world records in Chicago, but three of them came very early in my career. Khalid Khannouchi, Catherine Ndereba and Paula Radcliffe

17

WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL DAY SPENT IN CHICAGO?

That’s a tough question. Chicago is a great walking city, a great

eating city and a great sports city. The best way to discover the city is to walk around, grab some food and catch a sports game. So my ideal day would be going for a run, hanging out and having lunch, and going to a White Sox, Chicago Bulls or Chicago Bears game. But there’s so many unique neighborhoods, shopS and restaurants that I like to switch up my route whenever I can. One of the more rewarding things for me is to get out on a Sunday morning, at the time the Marathon takes place, and walk three miles of the course. I get to meet the people who live along the course, and it’s amazing the feedback you get when you tell them what you’re doing because everyone has a connection on an organic level.

WHAT DOES CHICAGO MEAN TO YOU?

We are the heart of the Midwest; we’re in the middle of the west and east coasts and we’re often thought of as the Second City or overlooked sometimes, but I think it motivates us to keep doing what we’re doing. It’s a wonderful place to live and I wouldn’t live anywhere else. The winters are tough as we know, but the people here, you can have a conversation with them they actually want to listen and talk back. Nobody’s too busy to talk to you or help you, and it’s a place where people share their thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and their love. It’s a tough place but it’s also a kind place in many ways. I’ve been to Los Angeles, Boston and New York and there’s just something about Chicago that grows on you and sticks to you.

BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON OFFICIAL PROGRAM

are all incredible athletes, and after Paula’s in 2002, I thought maybe that was it. Watching Brigid’s performances leading up to Chicago, I knew she was special. We met on the Saturday before the race to discuss what her pace would be, and when she told me she wanted to break Paula’s record and run 2:14, instantly a new energy came over me. Everyone that was there said that was too fast, but I asked the pacers if they could do that, and she was confident so we told her to go for it. She just grabbed a big sword and went to battle, and after that I knew we could have more records on this course very soon.

BY CINDY KUZMA Chicago’s neighborhoods are more than just places on a map. Each area has a unique character that draws from its history, businesses and people. Local run clubs add to the fabric of the community, exploring the area on foot and giving residents a way to connect with each other. After a year of virtual and distanced meetups, these groups are eager to cheer on their members and all participants in the 2021 Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

ROGERS PARK Rogers Park is on the far north side; it’s one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city, rich with food and culture from a wide range of backgrounds and countries. BEST PLACES TO RUN: Along the lakefront north; keep going a few miles, and you’ll reach Northwestern University in Evanston and the Bahai Temple in suburban Wilmette. Or, head to Warren Park (6601 N. Western Ave.). One lap around the park’s path is 1.55 miles, so two laps is a 5K, and there’s a sledding hill perfect for repeats in the middle. LANDMARKS/ATTRACTIONS: Mile of Murals is a public art display along the CTA Red Line track at Glenwood Avenue, from Estes Avenue to Pratt Boulevard. The paintings depict parts of the neighborhood’s past as well as inspirational messages to guide the future. LOCAL BUSINESSES: Smack Dab Chicago, 6730 N. Clark St.: This “urban bakery with a wandering soul,” as the owners put it, is famous for cheesy biscuit sandwiches and vegan donuts. They pay a living wage and offer benefits to employees; hosted a free community dinner during COVID; and offer a safe, affirming space for queer, trans and non-binary customers.

ROGERS PARK RUNNING CLUB “Thirteen years ago, I started running in the neighborhood at 5:30 in the morning. I put a post on a neighborhood message board looking for an accountability partner. NOVEMBER PROJECT “The Chicago Marathon is so exciting. For many people, it’s their first race or their first time visiting. We want to show them all the amazing things about Chicago in 36 hours. We used to work out at the Bean [formally known as the Cloud Gate sculpture, 201 E. Randolph St.]; hopefully that reopens by the time October rolls around, because it’s such an iconic location. We always do a social event, like an architecture tour or a pizza mile. Then, our cheer station is epic. I’m really looking forward to showing off the November Project energy again.” KAITLYN KOOYERS, CO-LEADER, NOVEMBER PROJECT CHICAGO

“During the pandemic, we pivoted to Zoom for virtual workouts and coffee chats, where you could stay on the line until you had to go to work. A lot of people working from home could have slept in and didn’t necessarily need to work out at 6 a.m. But we kept that structure and time to maintain a little bit of normalcy and consistency. “Another thing we promoted, from the leaders of November Project global, was a 1-60-1. So one-minute video chat; go out and do your own workout for 60 minutes; then log back in at the end for another minute to share that experience and hold each other accountable. “I am beyond excited for the Chicago Marathon. We have a cheer station right around mile 22. We have a huge group, usually wearing onesies. November Project is a free fitness movement that’s 53 cities deep around the world. We have our local group, but it is also a global community.” MIKE “NEZ” IBANEZ, CO-LEADER, NOVEMBER PROJECT CHICAGO

These largely residential northwest side communities blend Chicago’s European immigrant and industrial past with new urban destinations, such as breweries and Michelin-starred restaurants.

“We invited other MRC chapters to join us, so we interacted with members from Russia, Denmark, Liverpool, and Los Angeles. It was really cool to hear how they were doing. We’d introduce ourselves and talk about the beers we were drinking.

WHERE TO RUN: The Mikkeller Running Club often hits the North Branch Riverwalk—a short pathway near Chicago’s other body of water—and then circles Horner Park (2741 W Montrose Ave), where you can run an approximately 1-mile loop around the playgrounds, baseball and softball fields, and grassy picnic groves. LANDMARKS/ATTRACTIONS: St. Hyacinth Basilica, 3635 W. George St..: You can see this Polish cathedral’s towering steeple from miles away. Come for Sunday mass— in Polish or English—or merely to gaze upon the bronze doors, 100-year-old stained glass windows and saucer-like dome, with its 3,000-square-foot mural. LOCAL BUSINESSES: Beer Temple, 3173 N. Elston Ave.: If it’s good enough for the Mikkeller Running Club—the local chapter of a worldwide running club linked to a Danish brewery—we’ll bet you’ll find a brew for you at this craft beer taproom and bottle shop.

“Once we knew outside was a bit safer, in the summer, we started hosting smaller runs wearing masks. Sometimes we would end at a place with a patio or meet in a park and someone would bring beverages. We were able to do stuff together, but alone. Just being able to see people—whether it be on Zoom, or the very small runs that we did—was nice for mental health. “We finally just started meeting again in person. It was so great to hug people, to say ‘cheers’ without staring into a screen. “We’re very much looking forward to Marathon weekend. We always host a shakeout run and a post-marathon party. It’s so fun to meet people from all over the world who enjoy running and craft beer; with those two things in common, we’re instant friends. We’re very committed to keeping people hydrated during their marathon endeavors, so we’ll be hosting an unofficial aid station with local beer at mile 24 again this year.” CHARLYN CHAPAL, CAPTAIN, MIKKELLER RUN CLUB CHICAGO

“From day one, we’ve made an intentional point to run in the neighborhoods. Everybody who’s on the lakefront is already active. We want to inspire other people by seeing us out there for seven miles every Sunday. We’ve stayed true to that commitment for the last three years. “During the pandemic, we took it upon ourselves as leaders to communicate. We engaged on social media. We starting telling everybody, running’s not canceled, sharing that hashtag. We’d show images of everybody running solo, shouting them out and encouraging people.

February is notoriously the coldest month in Chicago; we gathered about 125 runners to commit to running virtually that month. In March, since there wasn’t a Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle, we got together for a South Side Shuffle. We ran and bought everyone pizzas. “We also have a Whatsapp group for people who want that connection. As we started running together again we made sure everybody was comfortable and told them, even though we are outside, stay masked up and keep some social distancing about yourself. Many of our runners told me the group was

amazing for their mental health during the pandemic. In addition to our Sunday mornings, we have Blue Bridge Tuesdays, where we meet at Williams-Davis Park with some members of the November Project for a strength and conditioning run. Now that more in-person races are coming, we’re just exploring the city a little bit more, running with some other groups and adding those little things to our programming. founded their own marathon in 1897. The race has been run every year since (though the 1918 edition featured a military relay and 2020 featured a Virtual Experience) and is recognized as the world’s oldest annual marathon.

VIRGIN MONEY LONDON MARATHON:

The first London Marathon was held on March 29, 1981. More than 20,000 people wanted to run; 7,747 were accepted. The 1982 race received more than 90,000 applicants from around the world. The entry was limited to 18,059. Since then, the Virgin Money London Marathon has grown to more than 39,000 starters and finishers and is viewed in more than 196 countries worldwide and watched by between four and five million viewers in the UK.

BMW BERLINMARATHON:

A group of runners from one of Germany’s most prestigious athletics clubs, SC Charlottenburg, organized the first BERLIN-MARATHON in 1974. It was not until 1981 that the race moved from the Grunewald (a big forest) into the city center of West Berlin. Supported by the three western allied forces (Britain, France and USA) it quickly developed into Germany’s biggest and best quality marathon.

BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON:

In 1976, a small band of running enthusiasts met at the Metropolitan YMCA on LaSalle Street to discuss and plan a marathon in Chicago. This founding group realized their vision on September 25, 1977, when they hosted 4,200 local

participants in the first Chicago Marathon. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has since expanded to more than 45,000 finishers and an estimated 1.7 million on-course spectators. The flat and fast course begins and ends in historic Grant Park, sweeping through 29 diverse and colorful neighborhoods.

TCS NEW YORK CITY MARATHON:

The TCS New York City Marathon is the premier event of New York Road Runners (NYRR) and the largest marathon in the world. More than 1.2 million people have finished the race since its first running in 1970 with just 127 entrants and 55 finishers running four laps around Central Park. The race expanded to all five boroughs in 1976 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2021.

At every marathon I am inspired by the other runners. There is an electricity in the air. People of all different skills, sizes, abilities… But all committed to achieving a personal goal they previously never believed possible. The attitude is contagious.

Running was EVERYTHING during those early pandemic days. I was running more than 40 miles a week because it was something to DO at a time when there was so little going on. It felt like I could still achieve something when everything in the world at the time was on hold and so uncertain.

YAM SPICE SUPERHERO MUFFINS for easy-to-digest long-run fuel Picking a favorite Superhero Muffin is like trying to pick a favorite book. We find comfort in so many different styles and combos of ingredients depending on our mood, cravings and training schedule. That’s why our 3rd cookbook, Rise & Run, includes 24 NEW Superhero Muffin recipes, both high-protein savory muffins and complex-carb sweet variations. If we had to pick just one recipe to eat on repeat before running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon it would be our Yam Spice Superhero Muffins. These muffins have become our go-to fuel before long runs and intense workouts. We’ve always honored sweet potatoes and oats as the best easy-to-digest complex carbs for endurance. The fresh ginger is a bonus to soothe digestion before cranking out the miles. Grating fresh ginger is worth the effort, but if you’re in a time crunch, replace it with 1 teaspoon ground ginger. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweet potato, maple syrup, melted butter, and ginger. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. The batter will be thick. 4. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin cups, filling each to the brim. Bake until the muffins are nicely browned on top and a knife inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. 5. Store leftover muffins in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 3 months. As we continue to measure and consider ways to reduce our event’s overall climate impact, we are implementing new actions to reduce our overall carbon footprint. These initiatives include moving from paper to digital guides, eliminating carpet at the Abbott

96 BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON OFFICIAL PROGRAM

Carpeting typically covers the exhibit hall floor for all participant common areas at the Abbott Health & Fitness Expo. By not using carpet in these areas, we are eliminating the greenhouse gas emissions produced from manufacturing, shipping and cleaning the carpet. According to a carpet study completed this year, the avoided emissions by not using 300,380 square feet of carpet is 55.04 metric tons of CO2e, not including the carpet backing. This is equivalent to 25 round trip commercial flights from Chicago to London. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has partnered with Cool Effect and American Airlines to offer you an easy way to offset your travel to our event. By taking action, you are supporting projects that have been scientifically verified to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To learn more about

the projects and to offset your travel, click here. In addition to our new initiatives, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is proud to have earned Evergreen Inspire Status from the Council for Responsible Sport in 2018 and support the United Nation’s “Sports for Climate Action” initiative. Learn about some of our ongoing initiatives below, and visit our website for the complete list of efforts. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon works with local businesses to source products with sustainable attributes for the event. A local sign manufacturer uses fabric made from recycled plastic bottles to produce our Zero Waste Stations. Zero Waste Stations collect difficult to recycle items to send them to TerraCycle for processing. Organic waste collected at

the Zero Waste Stations will be turned into nutrientrich soil and donated to local community gardens. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon official Nike running shirt is made out of 100% recycled polyester, made from a new blend of recycled plastic bottles and polyester fabric scraps. In addition to reducing waste, recycled polyester reduces carbon emissions by up to 30% compared to virgin polyester. Heatsheet blankets collected at the finish line are processed and turned into composite wood boards. These boards are used to create benches for installation in local community gardens. Clothing discarded at the start line is donated to Illinois AMVETS and the Salvation Army.
