Cellart’s Wine Spaces Magnum Opus

THE SANCTUARY CellArt’s creative director dream wine space

Thierry Forbois

CellArt’s Creative Director

Born since 1971, Thierry Forbois is a creator, inventor and mutidisciplinary artist of French origin. A self-taught lover of art, science, words, ideas, classical music, starry dawns, and wine, he never outgrew the innocent rapture of childhood, the joy of imprinting the world with his creations. His crowning achievement is the living art of the Way of wine and its Ritual, along with the Vascellum, vessel of service of the ceremony.

“I have a long-held secret fantasy: an underground living space, far from the noise and distractions of the modern world, dedicated to wine and art. An interior aesthetic to enjoy a feeling of sanctuary and retreat, where every elements and details of the space is reduced to its essence, thanks to the absence of the unnecessary. A place to reconnect to the basics and joy of living: sharing a bottle or two of good wine with a friend, reading poetry aloud, being moved to tears by a great music or listening to what silence has to say...”

- Thierry Forbois

WINE OBJECTS CellArt’s Head of Creation unique design

Dominique Légaré Head of Creation

As CellArt’s head of creation, Dominique manages the development of each design, from concept to completion, creating all the layouts and final artwork. By implementing the general design concept, he ensures the perfect integration of all technical and functional aspects. Inspired by contemporary architecture, highly skilled and talented, Dominique brings out his rationality to the original concept, adding his rebellious touch to each project, while refining the artistic style. Dominique also designed CellArt’s first collection of wine objects, Les Irremplaçables.

“My intention was to create uncommon wine objects that would co-exist with your most valuable bottles while enhancing them subtly. By hugging any bottle curve in an organic movement, they bring a new dimension to the wine tasting moment. Being at the crossroad of tradition and modernism, these Irremplaçables truly fulfill their promise.”

- Dominique Légaré

Her work can be found in numerous private and corporate collections.

“Jonathan and Thierry immediately impressed me as two very passionate - and therefore exciting - people who easily inspired me to collaborate. This ambitious project offers me several interesting avenues to develop my practice and I appreciate the attention to detail and quality inherent in CellArt’s achievements: one only has to visit their production workshop to grasp the richness of their expertise and want to contribute to this remarkable alliance between art and wine.”

- Myriam Dion

THE CONTEMPLATION OF SYMMETRY Renaissance Gardens interrogates our appetite for sonic news and sensational art by creating mirrored mosaics using a precise hand-cutting technique. Each garden encloses vintages behind its doors, embracing the tradition of the land and the symbolism of the soil.

FADE OUT Frédéric Cordier

Artist

Frédéric Cordier is a Swiss-Canadian artist born in Montreal in 1985. His work revolves around the notion of systems to which he associates the idea of dysfunctionality. His formal preoccupations explore the basic elements of a specific vocabulary, aiming at a highly visual efficacy with simple interventions that play on rhythm and pattern, full and empty, black and white. Through sculpture, architectural installation, and drawing, Frédéric Cordier explores a visual language that focuses on repetition.

“For me, a cellar is a form of grid, a repetitive and utilitarian structure. From a geometric pattern that I drew and imagined in volume, I intervened on the structure of the cellar in a simple way, by subtracting the elements of its composition. The sequencing principle is thus disturbed by a deconstruction until the complete degradation of the pattern, which is that of the cellar. From these full and empty spaces results a complex and light binary frame in which the bottles will be displayed at a decreasing way.”

- Frédéric Cordier

BEAUTIFY THE SPACE WITH A STATEMENT Embracing Frédéric Cordier’s singular artistic vision, CellArt redefines the boundaries of wine and art with Fade out, a wine presentation masterpiece proposed in two versions, each one in a single original piece.

Mathieu Beauséjour Artist

Mathieu Beauséjour’s work has been presented at numerous art centres, public and private galleries, bienniales, and museums in Canada and Europe. Recent exhibitions include the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2018), the Musée régional de Rimouski in 2015, the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal in 2015 and the Manif d’Art 7 in Quebec city in 2014. His work can be found in numerous collections, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec as well as corporate and private collections.

FLUX “For CellArt, I wanted to invest in the concept of repetitive circular motions and lines. Reusing the composition of one of his notorious drawings on black paper, the diagonals, and rays are the structural elements of the cellar, offering multiple possibilities to present and showcase wine collections.”

- Mathieu Beauséjour

“Quote saying something about the project.” - Name of the Source

MONUMENTAL Flux refers to the concept of a wave suspended in time. The cycle of life and surfing pause in a geometric sculpture, paying tribute to modern art and the power of nature. It’s a wave of wine that carries us beyond ourselves, like drunkenness and its passions.

OPEN WINDOWS “I wanted to transform the wine cave into a sanctuary, the wine cabinet into a kind of tabernacle - a place of reflection, ritual, and shared experience. The toast, like a secular prayer, offers us a moment to declare our greatest hopes, our deepest gratitude, and our most meaningful celebrations.”

- Samantha Holmes Samantha Holmes Artist

Samantha Holmes is a Bronx based artist who focuses on conceptual and material experimentation in mosaic. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Palazzo Fortuny (Venice), in conjunction with the 2015 Venice Biennale, the Bronx Museum of the Arts (NYC), and the Sharjah Art Museum (UAE), and her public art installations can be seen throughout the United States and abroad. She is the recipient of the 2011 International GAEM Art Prize (Young Artists and Mosaic), as well as the 2013 RAM Prize for Mosaic. She holds degrees from Harvard University (BA, Visual and Environmental Studies, 2006) and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Ravenna (MFA, Experimental Mosaic, 2014), and is co-founder of the custom mosaic studio Motivo Mosaic in New York.

BEHIND THE SCENE Open Windows envisions a cellar that offers a quiet refuge from the frenzy of everyday life. The result captures a sense of the sacred, as the cellar becomes a space for reflection, celebration and meditation on the senses.

SOLAR FOLDS “What a great challenge CellArt offered me. I immediately wanted to propose an environment that would combine both the needs of the most demanding wine collectors and what lies outside the frame of my images, behind the colored fields of specifically designed photograms, behind the folds of light. CellArt’s incredible engineering ability convinced me to let my creativity express itself without limit, reinforced by their unique knowledge about wine conservation, woodworking, and art to create an uncompromising space.”

- Yann Pocreau

IMMERSIVE ABSTRACTION Based on photograms, this unique wine space is a nod to what happens in a dark room. Meticulously thought out to create both short moments of wonder and a certain dynamism, it keeps in mind the idea of a composed, framed space, that summons the geometry of the photograms.

He gives regular presentations in Canada and abroad and spends many weeks each year travelling wine countries around the world to keep up with this fascinating industry.

“The look and feel of this space is all-natural: wood, glass and stone are the principal materials. It’s a calm and serene environment, functional with understated beauty and fine craftsmanship, like fine wines, subtle but complex, with many layers to unravel. It’s underground to take advantage of the natural cooling of the earth, but natural light filters in through skylights, like the air shafts in traditional cellars, which cast a gentle glow on a large, live-edge wood tasting table. At the far end of the space is a water feature, as though the walls of the cellar were cut through an underground stream, weeping like a waterfall and emanating the soothing sound of flowing water, but also maintaining humidity. The floor is composed of dark slate, with a curved pattern of smooth, raked river gravels cutting through it like a stream and ending in the waterfall. The cellar is composed of five separate wine storage spaces, glassed-in and facing onto the central space. They are constructed out of different stone types corresponding to the major geologies in vineyards around the world: sedimentary (limestone), intrusive igneous (granites), fluvial/alluvial (gravels, sandstones), metamorphic (slate/schists), extrusive igneous (volcanics). Each room is stocked of course with wines born of each distinctive geology, an ancient and intuitive, yet unusual way to sort out the vast world of wine. All of the finest wines of the world have a room in this cellar, where diversity and distinctiveness are prized above all.”

- Jonn Szabo

“I realized a dream in September 2019 with the purchase of a cottage in Shefford, Quebec. Never has there been a greater need to be reconnected to the rhythm of nature, to be exposed to the mountains and to unplug from everyday life’s routine. My lifestyle has become more spiritual and timeless. This new state brings me isolation and intimacy that fuels my thoughts and personal development. This environment is completely disconnected from the everyday and at the same time natural and grounded in stone, becoming a sacred place in complete harmony with my love for wine.”
