The overall idea was to break the conventional box design and create a more dynamic building that would rotate every single floor creating a more attractive building in the city block. Each floor rotates at a different angle allowing the accupants to have a diverse feeling at every level.

SITE ANALYSIS New York has architecturally significant buildings in a wide range of styles spanning distinct historical and cultural periods. These include the Woolworth Building (1913), an early Gothic revival skyscraper with large-scale gothic architectural detail. The character of New York's large residential districts is often defined by the elegant brownstone rowhouses, townhouses, and tenements that were built during a period of rapid expansion from 1870 to 1930.[5] In contrast, New York City also has neighborhoods that are less densely populated and feature free-standing dwellings. In the outer boroughs, large single-family homes are common in various architectural styles . Stone and brick became the city's building materials of choice after the construction of wood-frame houses. Unlike Paris, which for centuries was built from its own limestone bedrock, New York has always drawn its building stone from a far-flung network of quarries and its stone buildings have a variety of textures and hues. A distinctive feature of many of the city's buildings is the

TRI- ADAPTABLE Type: Fabrication Professor: Zora Key Location: N/A

CELIA PADILLA

Tri-Adaptable is designed to combine contemporary architecture and nature. It grants an area for relaxation and meditation in any location as it is portable and easy to construct. The pavilion blends in with the surrounding panorama and provides a shaded space for pedestrians, helping them shelter from the hot sun. Tri-Adaptable offers views thru different parts. It is composed of solid aluminum panels(vegetated), translucent panels, and even parts where the structure is exposed, creating a communion between the sheltered space and the exterior. Filtered daylight through the pavilion creates dynamic shadow patterns on the ground.

Study Models The idea started with Foldings that are supported by nails. To create a system, an analysis drawing was required to investigate the connections beteween each nail. To make it as precise as the folding that was shown in the drawing some study models where created to make it stand on its own by playing with the positive/negative spaces.

ESCONDIDO RESIDENCE Type: Housing Competition Location: N/A

CELIA PADILLA

The Escondido Residence is designed as a simple box containing a number of volumes which, with different depths and window treatments, convey a graceful character. The facades are clad in custom made larch panelling treated with a silicon-based protective medium. A narrow width profile for the voids cut into the main volume and a deep board and batten-type cladding on the main facades that creates a variation of shadows during the course of a day.

MACKENZIE NATURE SPA Type: Spa Professor: Dr. Haq Location: Lubbock TX.

The park provides the natural beauty of the trees and lake with a sense of peaceful environment. The main purpose of this building is to create an environment where people enjoy the views from the outside nature being inside. The building contains open spaces with relaxing platforms surrounded by nature. A steel frame enables walls to be moved and create new learning layouts independent of the structure. The steel frame enabled to articulate a radial grid and achieve a long span. This flexibility is due in a small part to a lightweight steel structure chosen to suit both the need for reconfiguration and the soft ground conditions. The circular plan means there are no dead-end corridors and provides an easier circulation. The second floor was created as an open plan structure without solid walls in the layout to provide daylight and views to the outside while also offering a merch between the public and private without having to interrupt one another.

CENTRAL RESIDENTIAL Professor: R.Perl Location: New Mexico

The purpose of this design was to maximize the number of units on the site and allowed to create more social and interacting gathering area for residents. One of the ways to eliminate cross traffic is to create an open space that can take advantage of the surrounding streets and give access to most of the units. This allowed to provide a safety environment for social and interacting area. The safety for residents should be consider as one of the main priorities in a design. New Mexico’s largest city, the Albuquerque Metro area has over 908,200 residents and is growing at a steady pace of 1 to 2 percent a year. The area’s five-year growth rate is projected at 7.2 percent compared with the national rate of 4.0 percent. Even as a larger city, Albuquerque can’t help but retain its neighborhood feel.

Albuquerque’s climate is mild and dry, with an annual average of more than 200 clear days. The average annual temperature is in the mid-50s F (about 13 °C). The Manzano Mountains to the east block much of the moisture-laden air that flows northward from the Gulf of Mexico, creating a rain shadow. As a result, the city receives only about 9 inches (230 mm) of rainfall annually, most of it falling in the summer. The Sandia Mountains receive about 30 inches (760 mm) of rain in the summer and about the same amount of snow in the winter.

This design seminar explores how digital media and physical material are used interchangeably as instruments in a design environment. Light, shade, shadow, texture, color, transparency, translucency, and reflectivity are introduced. The workshop uses a synthematic approach inspired by Bauhaus principles of craftsman-ship and visual percception. A series of weekly experiments stimulate intuition, experimentation, and analytic observation. The methodology explores the tectics and techniques of space making with a particular emphasis on experiental and sensorial percep-tion.
