Ola Edel!! Grazas por contestar as nosas preguntas hoxe. Como estás a levar esta difícil situación estando aquí, lonxe do teu país e da túa familia?

Son tempos difíciles para todo o mundo e é duro estar lonxe da miña familia porque non sei cando poderei viaxar a casa de novo, pero todos están ben e iso é o máis importante.

Gústache Galicia? Vives nunha vila pequena ou na cidade? Que che gusta máis?

Sí, por suposto. Encántame Galicia. Vivo en Porriño que é una vila bastante pequeña. Prefíroo porque é máis tranquila e é máis doado viaxar a outros sitios.

Gústache o noso estilo de vida? É parecido ao estilo de vida irlandés?

Sí gústame, especialmente as festas do verán con música tradicional e comida. Parécese ao estilo de vida irlandés nalgúns aspectos, por exemplo, a importancia da familia e na música e nos bailes de tradición Celta. Algunhas cousas son diferentes. Por exemplo en Irlanda comemos e ceamos moito máis cedo.

Probaches a comida galega e a española? Gustouche?

Si, encántame a comida galega e a española, especialmente a tortilla de patacas, o marisco, o polbo con patacas e o churrasco.

Poderías dicirnos algo sobre o lugar onde naciches?

Eu son dunha pequena cidade no centro de Irlanda, situada a unha hora de Dublín, a capital.

Que lugares levas visitado dende que estás aquí?

Visitei moitos lugares en Galicia: As Illas Cíes, Baiona, Oia, Santa Tegra, Ribeira Sacra, O Cebreiro, a praia das Catedrais, Os Cañóns do Sil, Costa da morte, Fragas do Eume, Santiago de Compostela, Ferrol, Termas de Prexigueiro, A Coruña, Balneario de Mondariz, Sanxenxo, a praia da Lanzada, Vilagarcía, San Simón, Ribadavia...

Sabes falar castelán? E galego? Que opinas sobre os idiomas?

Si, sei falar castelán pero no colexio nunca o falo, só na casa. Entendo o galego pero ainda non podo falalo. Gústame aprender novos idiomas porque nos axuda a comunicarnos mellor coa xente doutros países. Que pensas sobre ensinar un idioma? É fácil ou difícil? Gústame ensinar inglés porque podo compartir a miña cultura e tamén formas de comunicarse con outras persoas. Gústame ensinar mediante xogos e actividades lúdicas, que @s alumn@s o pasen ben e así fará que recorden o aprendido máis facilmente. Ás veces é difícil porque en inglés non deletreamos as palabras igual que en español por iso é máis complicado para ler e pronunciar correctamente.

Que opinas sobre o Alexandre Bóveda? Como te sentiches a primeira vez que che

gaches aquí? Penso que o Alexandre Bóveda é un colexio excelente. Tanto mestr@s como alumn@s son moi amables e atent@s. Cando empecei foi diferente para mi porque antes traballaba con grupos máis reducidos así que parecíame moi grande.

Cales son as diferenzas máis importantes entre o sistema educativo español e o ir

landés? Na etapa de Primaria o sistema educativo español e o irlandés son moi parecidos. En Irlanda o alumnado empeza Primaria a idade de 4 ou 5 anos e despois aos 11 ou 12 anos pasa a Secundaria. Nalgúns colexios de Irlanda ensinan todas as materias na nosa lingua, o irlandés; pero a maioría faino en inglés así que alí non temos tantos colexios plurilingües como tedes aquí. Como valorarías a túa experiencia aquí nestes dous anos? Foi unha experiencia xenial estar aquí en Chapela estes dous anos. O alumnado sempre me saúda cun enorme sorriso e se esforzan para falarme en inglés. Estou impresionada co progreso que fixeron @s alumn@s e agardo que continúen practicando a diario.

INTERVIEW WITH EDEL, OUR LANGUAGE ASSISTANT

Hello Edel. Thanks for answering our questions today. How are you dealing with this hard time being here, far away from your country and family?

This is a difficult time for everyone and it’s hard to be far from my family because I don’t know when I’ll be able to travel home again but everyone is well and safe so that is the most important thing.

Do you like Galicia? Do you live in a small town or in the city? What do you like

more? Yes, of course. I love Galicia. I live in Porriño, which is quite a small town. I prefer it because it is quieter and easier to travel to different places.

Do you like Galician way of life? Is it similar to Irish lifestyle?

Yes, I like the Galician way of life, especially the summer parties with traditional music and food. It is similar to the Irish lifestyle in some ways for example, the importance of families and the Celtic traditional music and dancing. Some things are different, for example in Ireland we have lunch and dinner a lot earlier in the day.

Have you tried Galician/ Spanish typical food? Did you like it?

Yes, I love Galician and Spanish food especially Spanish omelettes, seafood, octopus with potatoes and barbecued meat.

Please, tell us something about the place where you were born?

I’m from a small town in the centre of Ireland, about one hour from Dublin, the capital city.

What places have you visited since you came here?

I have visited a lot of places in Galicia: The Cies Islands, Baiona, Oia, Santa Tecla, Ribiera Sacra, O Cebreiro, The Cathedral Beach, Cañons do Sil, Costa da Morte, Fragas do Eume, Santiago de Compostela, Ferrol, Termas de Prexigueiro, A Coruña, Balneario de Mondariz, Sanxenzo, Lanzada beach, Vilagarcía, San Simón, Ribadávia

Can you speak Spanish? What about Galician? What´s your opinion about other languages?

Yes, I can speak Spanish but I never speak Spanish at school, only at home. I understand some Galician but I can’t speak it yet. I like learning new languages because it helps us to communicate better with people from other countries.

What do you think about teaching a language? Is it easy or difficult?

I like teaching English because I can share my culture and ways to communicate with others. I like to teach using games and playful activities so the students have fun and

remember more easily. Sometimes it is difficult because in English we don’t spell words in the same way as in Spanish so it is hard to read and pronounce correctly.

What do you think about Alexandre Bóveda School? How did you feel the first time you came in?

I think Alexandre Bóveda School is an excellent school. The teachers and students are very friendly and helpful. When I started it was different for me because I worked in smaller classes before so it seemed very big.

What are the most important differences between the Spanish and the Irish Education System?

The Spanish and Irish Education Systems are very similar at primary level. Students in Ireland start primary school when they are 4 or 5 years old and then they move to secondary school when they are 11 or 12 years old. In Ireland, some schools teach all the subjects through our native language, Irish, but most schools teach all subjects through English so we don’t have as many multilingual schools as here.

How would you rate your experience here with over the last two years?

I have had a great experience in Chapela over the last two years. The students always greet me with big smiles and always try their best to speak to me in English. I am very impressed with the progress the students have made and I hope they continue to practice their English every day.
