AGAINST ALL ODDS Meet Daryl “Chill” Mitchell an accomplished actor and ambassador for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and its Paralysis Resource Center (PRC). In November 2001, he was involved in a motorcycle accident, which left him a paraplegic and paralyzed from the waist down. Daryl Mitchell was born in the Bronx and raised in Long Island, N.Y., he first came to the public’s attention as a member of the three-man rap group Groove B Chill. A music video made to accompany the group’s new album quickly led to an acting career, beginning with the feature film House Party, and later on, Galaxy Quest, Lucky Numbers, as well as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Law & Order, and as a series regular on The John Larroquette Show and Veronica’s Closet.
Daryl Mitchell recently won the Television category of “Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series” in the 41st annual NAACP Image Awards. He also hit the small screen with FOX’s “Brothers,” where he stared alongside Michael Strahan, CCH Pounder and Carl Weathers; and had a role on Desperate House Wives. “I know my role on ‘Desperate Housewives’ isn’t a large one,” said Mitchell, “but it’s a huge move forward for those living with paralysis when a show of this magnitude hires a paralyzed actor to play someone who’s paralyzed. “It’s another way for me to show my brothers and sisters in the paralyzed community that not only does life go on after paralysis, but it can be rich and fulfilling. That is why I’m so passionate about my work with the Foundation and the PRC.”
FLOSSMAGAZINE.COM YOUNG, RICH AND FAMOUS ISSUE
A recent survey by the PRC Foundation showed that there are a disproportionate number of African-Americans living with paralysis; about 17 percent, when compared to a little over 12 percent of the American population that’s African-American. “Chill’s enthusiasm and zest for life is inspiring,” said Joe Canose, Vice President, Quality of Life for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. “The example he sets to those who live with paralysis, particularly those in the African-American community, is wonderful. When people like Chill succeed despite tremendous odds, it brings a tremendous message of hope to all of us, but especially to those who really need it.” For more information on Paralysis Resource Center free Paralysis Resource Guide www.paralysis.org.

WELCOME:
YOU GOT MAIL From: derickF@%^l.com To: yougotmail@flossmagazine.com Subject: ARE Sistas driving BROTHERS away? There’s a lot of FRICTION between Black men and Black women. We can lie to ourselves and pretend that the problem is not there, or we can do something to try and address this. What I’m trying to do is create a dialogue, so that we can take a look at this problem. These are some PICTURES of BLACK MEN that date, and marry outside of their race. In looking at these pictures I notice that a lot of brothers are now dating Asian women, and there’s nothing wrong with that because when two people are in love, their skin color shouldn’t matter. These are some good brothers, there’s no question about that, but I’ve often heard Black men complain about Black women hot temper, and their attitude. A few weeks ago I was talking to some brothers, and they said man I love sisters, but it seems like they are never satisfied. With that being said when we look at these pictures, then we have to ask this question--------is it possible that some sisters, are driving brothers away? Dr. Alveda King said, “Once again, Planned Parenthood tries to hide the painful truth; it is running an abortion dynasty, reaping benefits from killing Black babies. Planned Parenthood knows that abortion hurts women, kills babies and targets minorities. Yet, they keep pressing their case, and they keep using their victims to support their agenda of murder. Over 12 million people in the nation have had cosmetic procedures in 2008 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. LIFE
ONESELF I
n 2008 Grammy Award winner T.I. and Jason Geter, both co-founders of Atlanta based recording label Grand Hustle Entertainment, joined forces with the 35 year old apparel maker, RP55 Group to launched their clothing line AKOO. In a little more than a year and in the midst of the current economy, AKOO is thriving. While other clothing brands are cutting back AKOO is cutting deals. Recently, the branded expanded into fashion accessories by teaming up with G-Shock Watches to create a limited edition AKOO signature timepiece. T.I. is one of fashion’s go-to guys and is known for moving seamlessly from designer, red-carpet-worthy tuxedos to good-looking casual clothes. So, the AKOO brand is designed for the guy who appreciates fashion and knows how to transform his style. The following is FLOSS Magazine’s interview with AKOO Clothing Brand Creative Director Ralph Reynolds.
What does AKOO mean? AKOO Stands for “A King Of Oneself” What inspired the line and who is it created for? The inspiration for the brand is The Great Outdoors and The American Landscape..Hunting, Camping, overall the “sporting life.” Our goal is to create a well-made quality men’s line w/youthful design sense and edge. Our target consumer is a well dressed man, 20-40yrs old. How did you hook up with the King of the South T.I.? I have to say it was meant to be. The introduction came courtesy of our former marketing director, Dennis Murphy. When I told him I wanted to do a line with TI, he made the introduction happen with Grand Hustle CEO and TI’s manager, Jason Geter. For whatever reason (maybe fate), I met TI at a local radio station. We talked over the next few months, got to know each other and worked on ideas to bring AKOO to life.
the line is conveying that. We use fabrics and washes and designing at an elevated taste level really. We pull from vintage quality menswear inspirations and incorporate a youth albeit contemporary edge. How would you describe your 2010 spring/summer line? SP/SU 2010 is truly rounding out our first full AKOO year. We have color, color and more color. Strong pantones. Our signature polo shirts incorporate unique striping and color ways. We’re doing washed and broken twills and linens and very strong conversational print cargo shorts. AKOO Clothing Brand has had impressive success in the retail forum despite having launched in a recession year (we launched Fall 2008). More than a few retailers assumed or even hoped we’d be more like the typical urban brand, basic clothing with limited design elements & fabrication w/ a propped up poster of TI wearing everything. But this formula is limiting and doesn’t offer longevity. We’re building a lifestyle brand that’s about great clothing that can appeal to all contemporary but classically tailored men. We do very little advertising & relay on word of mouth and quality merchandise to build or buzz. The fire started on its own! Where can FLOSS Readers purchase AKOO? We’re at several locations in the tri-state area, Candy Shop in CT, Sneaker Villa, Rap City & Jersey Blues in NJ, Xtreme Lifestyle Inc, Blue Jeans, Sammy’s & Charney’s in NYC Of course you can by directly at www.akooclothingbrand.com.
Did you always know you would create your own fashion brand? Yes and No. The idea started for me years ago selling T-shirts on 6th Ave in NYC coupled by many highs and lows. Years later I started RP55 Group and we became one of the first urban brands and were part of the young men’s urban clothing revolution. Yes, I always knew I had it in me to do this. I never doubted it! What separates AKOO from other urban brands? The look of the urban formula has become stale and easy, simple matchy matchy i.e. make a shirt w/ red stitches then make a jean with red stitches then 1,2,3. When’s it going to stop? When will one of these brands (urban/ streetwear brands) begin to look at the landscape of other menswear lines and bring some maturity and design to the table? That’s what we strive for here at AKOO and hope

GUCCI MANE aka GUCCI La FLARE Whether you know him as Gucci the Glacier, Gucci LaFlare or simply, Gucci Mane, the rap moniker he adopted as a tribute to the nickname “Goochie Man” his grandmother gave his father years ago one thing remains true: There’s a good chance you’ve heard Gucci Mane’s name somewhere in the last 12 months. Gucci successfully elevated his name from the underground rap scene in the South straight to the top of the pop charts with appearances on four different Top 20 singles, including Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed,” Mario’s “Break Up” featuring Sean Garrett, Trey Songz’s “LOL :)” featuring Soulja Boy, and his own street single, “Wasted” featuring Plies and OJ Da Juiceman, which landed at No. 1 on urban mainstream radio. “When I came home from being incarcerated, my manager challenged me to collaborate with everyone that reached out to me in the next few months,” says Gucci. “That challenge has changed the entire direction of my career. My perspective is broader.”
The road to success has been nothing short of a challenge for Gucci Mane. Born Radric Davis in Bessemer, Alabama, Gucci Mane relocated to the Zone 6 area of East Atlanta when he was just 9 years old and, as a teen, did everything he could to make ends meet for himself and his family. But after a short stint in prison on drug-related charges in 2001, he decided to focus solely on his interest in music. He teamed up with local producer Xavier “Zaytoven” Dotson and created his first self-titled mixtape, which he distributed from the trunk of his car. By 2003, Gucci Mane got his first taste of national fame when he teamed up with fellow Atlanta rapper Jay “Young Jeezy” Jenkins to record the infectious club anthem “Icy.” The single spread quickly, FLOSSMAGAZINE.COM YOUNG, RICH AND FAMOUS ISSUE
gaining a huge cult-like following for both artists. Unfortunately, this rise to the top of the Southern rap scene was followed by misfortune. A dispute between Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy resulted in Gucci Mane having to serve almost a year in prison on attempted murder charges in 2005. Over the next five years Gucci would go in and out of jail for probation violations. “Many of my fans know me from the massive amounts of mixtapes I’ve released over the years,” says Gucci Mane, currently serving a 1-year sentence for a parole violation. “The Burrprint 2 mixtape is just something I wanted to put out there as a thank you for all those who have stuck by me through my incarceration and all those who have written letters.”
Managing Director at Nigro, Karlin, Segal, & Feldstein and top entertainment law firm Davis Shapiro Lewit & Hayes, LLP. Gucci has parted ways and is no longer affiliated with his former management company Mizay Entertainment and booking agency Hitt Afta Hitt Enterprises (also known as HAH). Gucci is also no longer affiliated with or an officer of his former record label So Icey Entertainment. “The rest of 2010 is going to be real major,” says Gucci Mane. “I’m taking control of all of my business properties and keeping the focus on my career, my music and my artists. All the pieces to the puzzle are finally in place and once I get home it’s Gucci time.”

To help ensure that Gucci’s success continues, he has restructured his team from top to bottom, signing an exclusive management deal with First Avenue Management, Inc., and bringing on board powerhouse agency CAA, which represents artists such as Usher, Justin Bieber and Anthony Hamilton, to handle all booking and appearance scheduling. The second season of the show can be described in one word, growth as we see the bond between both women become stronger. We watch as both Tiny and Toya go through the trials and tribulations of both the men they are involved with, deal with jail sentences. In regard to Lil’ Wayne’s stint in prison Toya informs Floss that she is obviously “saddened by Wayne or any one going to jail.” The two best friends were and are a support mechanism for one another in their hours of need and trying times. Tiny told us that she coped with Tip being away by staying busy with the show, her children and weekly visits to see him while he was in jail. This season also promises to reveal more intimate details of their inner circles amongst their blood and extended family life. Toya aids her mother Anita through the rehab and rocky recovery from substance abuse. She also entertains the possibility of letting her love life blossom with a perspective new suitor all while being a single parent to her and Lil Wayne’s daughter Raginae. While Tiny has to deal her father’s rapid plunge into dementia as he battles Alzheimer’s disease. While speaking to Tiny, Ms. Cottle mentioned a recent Easter outing at the “Harris household” where all the children won cash prizes. Slyly hinting that in the near future the rumors of her and T.I. getting married just may come to fruition right in front of millions of viewers eyes. They inform us that the show is fluid and is never scripted just 100% real at all times. In addition to the show both women are working on outside projects which will increase both of their profiles and ad more depth to these two complex business women. Tiny is now the owner of her own nail salon, has a girl singing group that she is producing. She is also featured on ex Excape co-member and writing partner Candy Buress’s solo album. While Toya is in the midst of writing a book to her younger self and the challenges she faced becoming a mother at age fourteen. The autobiographic/ self help book is aimed at young women in similar circumstances and will aid them through their own journey of self discovery. These two ladies have establish their own identities separate from the men they are involved with and show and prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt, Tiny and Toya do indeed have big things poppin’.

GO GREEN Interview by Paris F.
Photography by Delphine Fawundu-Buford
I
’ve been a New York Jets fan all of my life, studied as much about the team as I could as a kid and one particular Jets story inspired me to want to play the game of football and to love the New York Jets forever. The story of Broadway Joe Namath and Super Bowl III, in 1969, is one that turns heroes into legends. The Jets were a heavy underdog representing the American Football League (AFL) and the Baltimore Colts were a monstrous team representing the National Football league (NFL). In the first two Super Bowls the AFL teams were easily defeated. So during all the media Frenzy about the AFL not being qualified to compete against NFL teams, Joe Namath brashly guaranteed that the Jets would upset Don Shula’s NFL Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl. When all was said and done, the New York Jets beat the Colts, 16 – 7 and the game is regarded as one of the greatest upsets in sports history. This made me understand the type of determination and unity it must have taken for the team to achieve exactly what their leader and quarterback Joe Namath predicted, victory. So as a Jets fan, I was thrilled to do this story. I had the honor to shake hands with and talk to a current prominent member of Gang Green, linebacker Calvin Pace in his luxurious home. This man is a beast in his performance on the field and with his personal style. His 2009 season stats read as 55 tackles, 45 solo tackles, 10 assisted tackles and 8 sacks, his sneaker collection reads as, 300 and counting. Jets linebacker Calvin Pace is an avid collector of sneakers circa 1980’s to the present. Join in on our conversation about the game and personal style.
FLOSSMAGAZINE.COM YOUNG, RICH AND FAMOUS ISSUE
FLOSS: Calvin, please tell our readers about yourself. Calvin Pace: I grew up in Atlanta Ga and this will be my 8th year in the NFL and 3rd with the Jets. It’s been a blast playing here, you know, New York is a city that is very passionate about their sports teams. I think as a player if you can make it here you pretty much can play anywhere. So, it’s a pleasure being able to play here for this organization. F: How are the atmosphere and people different here from the people in Atlanta? CP: Oh man. People are a little more direct about how they feel about certain things. Even the fans, if things aren’t going well, they’ll let you know about it. But, that’s cool. When things are going well, they’re behind us and it’s always cool to play in front of a full house. F: Before coming to the Jets, what team did you play for and what are the differences in the teams and their programs? CP: I played for the Arizona Cardinals. It’s totally different man; you know the Jets are a first class organization. And, not to say that Arizona is not, but the Jets really provide anything and everything we need, whether it is better food or better facilities. They’ll do anything to try to get the best player possible, to help us. It’s just a team that is always win now. It’s never a situation where you have time to say we’ll be good in two years. That’s good as a player because you know they’re going to do whatever it takes to win. F: What was the difference between past seasons under coaches and last season playing for coach, Rex Ryan? CP: I think Rex is just the ultimate players coach and
• 33 INSIDE ENTERTANMENT what I mean by that is, I think he sees the preparation through a players eye, whether it be practice or training camp. He really stresses having fun. Sometimes coaches kind of get into the keep it too business like, where it’s not as much fun, it’s really an uptight atmosphere. But, with Rex, he stresses being yourself. Whether you’re a jokester or a quiet guy, he really stresses that. So, it’s fun coming to work every day when you know you have a guy who has your back and is not afraid to speak his mind. F: We hear you’re into cooking and eating healthy? CP: I just always eat healthy; I’ve never really been a big fried foods guy. I kind of had to tell my mom no to soul food sometimes. So, I think in what we do, what you put into your body is going to translate to how you play on the field. I think if you eat badly, you might feel a little more sluggish. I think the better food slash fuel you put in your body the better you’ll perform. I’m not going to sit here and say, I eat healthy every single day, I do have some things I just can’t say no to. F: What are some of the things you can’t say no to? CP: I’m a big chocolate chip cookie fan. You know, Krispy Cream donuts get me every time. But, everything is good in moderation, so you got to reward yourself with a cheat day every now and then. F: I see you have a couple of hot sunglasses here, fashion wise, what designers are you rocking these days? CP: I like Gucci. I got a pair of Tom Ford shades and some Prada. F: We also know you have an extensive sneaker collection, can you tell us a little about that? CR: Yeah, my man use to work at a shoe store, I really wasn’t into shoes, but I use to go up there and talk to him and he would show me stuff. He kind of just put me on to it. So, it got to a point where anytime they got new stuff, he would just call me and it just kind of grew from there. It’s ironic I got a Nike shoe deal so a lot of times we could just
get free shoes before they even come out. Plus, being in New York, you could just get anything if you search for it. It’s just one of them things a little hobby I have. But sometimes you got to watch yourself because you buy something and it might just be an outfit shoe, you might get one or two wears out of it. I think your outfit starts with the shoe. F: How many pairs of shoes do you have? CP: I would say between 300 and 350 pairs. But, they’re not all here; I have quite a lot in Atlanta too. I got to have similar stuff in both places just so I don’t have to lug everything around every time I go home. F: What would you say is your favorite pair or most comfortable pairs? CP: Right now I’ve been going real simple; I’ve been on Chucks real hard. I feel like you can dress Chucks up with anything. You can go out to dinner in Chucks. Nothing crazy, just you can walk around every day in Chucks, they’re pretty comfortable. I like Dunks a lot too. They’ve stepped their Dunk game up. I use to be a big Air Force One guy but, I’ve kind of been shying away from those a bit. F: In closing, what do you foresee next season looking like for you guys? CP: I say we’ll be in Dallas man. We’ll be playing somebody in Dallas for the Super Bowl. The reason why I say that is, last year was a good year for us to see how to do things right and how not to do things. We made it to the AFC Championship game and I think we strived at the right point and time at the end of the year. I’m not going to say it’s easy to go 13-0, but it’s hard to sustain all that success. So, I think if we can get in strive in December and go into the playoffs with a good momentum we can get the job done. I just think guys really want to win and that goes back to Rex, his view and his goal for us. He’s always talking about Super Bowl and everybody has bought in and it’s going to be an exciting year.

When Souljaboytellem popped on the scene with his monster hit “Crank That” the song grew a life of its own. The dramatic market changes in the industry made new artist harder to break. You never know what’s going to be the next big thing or how the artist will make it there. This story is a one of a kind, break the mold and throw it away journey of one teenage boy with a dream. For a young person of his age to understand and master the insand-outs of branding and marketing is not normal in any industry much less the music industry. There were many kid success stories but often those artists are orchestrated puppets with grown folks guiding their careers. In Souljaboytellem’s case, as a young boy with just a program on his computer and a mic he single handedly made the world ask, “Who is Soulja Boy?” He gained mostly positive attention mixed in with a little envious attention. However, his talent, personality and swag moved him through the eye of the storm and into a place in music history. Souljaboytellem was declared the youngest person to write, perform, and produce a number-one song on the Hot 100 chart, a title that was previously held by Deborah Gibson for almost 2 decades. Souljaboytellem’s music was originally targeted to the youth but ended up feverishly spreading across generations and cultures around the world.
Photography by Delphine Fawundu Buford
Rap music has strict rules that other genres of music don’t have. One of the top rules on the list is ‘keeping it real.’ Well Souljaboytellem kept it more real than many gangster rappers on the hip-hop scene. Exactly what should a 16-year-old kid talk about? The answer is everything he talked about on his first album “Unsigned & Still Major” Da Album before Da Album. Next he did a low budget video demonstrating the “Crank That” dance. In no time the song found its way to the air waves and the teenager, DeAndre Cortez Way found himself in a meeting with Michael Crooms a.k.a Mr. Collipark of Collipark Records. Soulja Boy’s debut spurn a nation of toddlers, tweens, and adults into a wide craze of learning the “Crank That” dance and everyone fell in love with his swag. He’s literally like a kid in a candy store right now with the ability to obtain anything he wants. His toys range from a grown man fantasy to a child’s wildest dreams. At just the ripe age of 18, he was already showing off his brand new white Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder which flies out of the showroom for an estimated price of $221,000. Have you ever seen anyone walking the earth with a diamond encrusted Lamborghini pendent and chain in which the pendant can be removed and used as remote control car? These perks are above rock star status, and might we add, it is well deserved. With that said, lets take a deeper look at not only the artist but the brand built by a kid with a dream..
FLOSSMAGAZINE.COM YOUNG, RICH AND FAMOUS ISSUE
Floss: What inspired your interest in the music business? Souljaboytellem: Just seeing rappers on TV ever since I was young watching B.E.T videos with rappers like Master P, Cash Money, and 50 Cent I just always wanted to be on T.V. That was just my dream to become a famous rapper. I just went after it non- stop and just focused on my music career and look where it got me. Floss: How old where you then? Souljaboytellem: Bout 11. I got my first got my studio equipment when I was 15. Floss: So did you start doing beats yourself or did you have a partner? Souljaboytellem: Yeah. First off I got this program called Fruity Loops and I used to mess around with it. I use to never take it serious but once I started recording songs with it, cause you know I couldn’t get any beats from anybody cause I move from Atlanta to Mississippi and I didn’t know nobody down there that made beats.
“
So I always had to make my own beats from the start. On all my albums I did my own beats because I also didn’t have the money to buy the beats from someone else. I went back to Atlanta one summer and I met with a friend of mine name Young Kwon and he taught me everything about Fruity Loops, so when I got back it just blew me up. Floss: So that’s when you took it to the internet, correct? Did it explode right away? Souljaboytellem: The first website I was on was Sound Click that’s the first site I used to get my music to the public. The first week I put the song up it was coming along then it started moving up the charts. I had the number one song on Sound Click for like four weeks straight and I peaked at like 30,000 downloads a day, this was before I got signed. After I peaked on Sound Click I came across MySpace. So I started my MySpace page and after that my numbers kept going up and up. Soon after that I started my YouTube and forgot all about Sound Click. I stayed between MySpace and YouTube. I used MySpace for pictures and music. I used YouTube for videos and blogs with fans. Floss: So now how did you transcend from the internet to getting your record deal? Souljaboytellem: I had my email to my MySpace page souljaboytellem@tmail.com set up for my fans to hit me and I got an email from Mr. Collipark he had a label deal at Interscope so he sent me an email that he wanted to sign me. I was getting $10,000 a show before I got signed traveling through the Southern States. I got to the point where I was booking two months of shows ahead of time. So, when I got signed I was still doing shows from when I wasn’t signed. Floss: I seen a clip when you pulled out a stack of fan mail at your old house tells us about that experience? Souljaboytellem: When I was small time I would send my address to get the money for the mix tapes so I be having like 3 garbage bags full of fan mail, because I’m big out here now but they still got that same address I guess. Floss: So lets talk about “Crank That,” you were able to prove the critics wrong who thought you were just a one hit wonder. What were some of the moves after “Crank” that you executed to mark your territory? Souljaboytellem: I just would stay consistent with my material. “Crank” was real big and it took me to a lot of places Japan, London, Paris, Hawaii, Germany and all around the world. “Crank That” was such a big record, I just thought about building my brand not to have just one song but build my empire. So that’s what I’m doing. Right now I’m in here recording my third album, I think this album will be a classic. I’ve matured a lot and seen a lot of things in my life so the third album will be off the chain. As far as “Crank That” it was a big song for me I wrote and produced it 100 percent and I’m glad I chose that for the song I came out with.

DeAndre Cortez Way was born in Chicago but moved to Atlanta when he was 6, and sparked an interest in music. At a point in time he had to move back to Batesville, Mississippi, with his father. His interest in music continued and prompted him to ask his father to buy his first recording studio. From there he found his way to becoming one of the highest grossing performers of 2009-2010. Traveling the world, transforming himself into a bigger than life mega star, staying true to the game & often being the butt of criticism from his peers, Souljaboytellem deals with it by delivering a solid hit every time. When he released “Turn My Swag On,” some artists who criticized him earlier on called and apologized sharing words of encouragement & praises. Some even paid him to appear on their songs. Souljaboytellem announced the release of his free mix tape “Legendary” on twitter and had over 10,000 downloads in less than an hour leaving people spell bound at his power to command attention. FLOSS sat down with Souljaboytellem, here is the story as it unfolds into a powerful brand.

Floss: So what about ringtones did you know about that area of opportunity or did you find out later on through the label and how much did you sell? Souljaboytellem: Yeah, I was doing ringtones before I got signed, it was somewhat like Sound Click. I was selling like 30,000 a day & they were 99 cents & I split the profits 50 percent with the company.

Floss: So now you proved them wrong what moves are you making to secure your place in music history? Souljaboytellem: Like I said earlier, my third album is going to be a classic, a lot of people slept on my music but it’s only because my songs so big, you know what I’m saying & if I can do that with one song the sky’s the limit for me. I’m going in the studio to record the third album. I got three number one singles “Crank That,” “Swag On” and “Kiss Me thru The Phone,” but you know I’m still grinding. The grind is still the same as if I was unsigned. I know a lot of people wrote me off early but I don’t care though because it’s not for them it’s for me.

Floss: So what’s next? Are you going to get into other things? Souljaboytellem: Movies! Floss: Are you taking acting classes? Souljaboytellem: Nah… I’m a natural, I actually did work with an acting coach when I first came out with “Crank That.” Floss: Are you accepting scripts now? Souljaboytellem: Yeah I’m accepting scripts now, but I was just working on a script I had, and the acting coach just started crying out of no where, and I was like whoa? She said you got to control emotions, know how to cry on cue. So, I was only 16 and it was kind of deep. But now I want to get into acting and I’m going to take my career seriously. Floss: I read an article that you wanted to work with Jay Z, Lil Wayne, so tell us who your dream team is if you had to put it together? Souljaboytellem: I want it to be perfect so Webbie, Jay Z, Eminem, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne and Kanye West, that’s about it. Floss: So did you come up with a title for this album? Souljaboytellem: Diandre Way is my government name. For the third album I wanna take a different approach, I wanna make good music. It’s all about quality not quantity. I put out a lot of songs from the first and second album so this one should be classic. Floss: Any last words for the people before we leave? Souljaboytellem: Just look out for good music and go get the album!

Floss: What was your experience like when you first got on, do you feel you were accepted by your peers? Souljaboytellem: It was all bout the grind for me I didn’t really care what nobody else thought about me as long as every concert was sold out all my fans was there you know. I was living the life, you know what I’m saying. The cars, clothes, the dreams all my goals was being accomplished. THE Greatest SONG Writer Alive by Maxwell Penn
C
hances are if you’re not an industry insider, you may not be familiar the name Sean Garret A.K.A. “The Pen”. However, you’ve probably nodded your head, and grooved to the dozens of hit records he’s written over the years and didn’t even know it. For the better part of a decade when A& R’s luminary figures, and legends in the recording business such as Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston need a hit they contact Mr. Garret. Sean “The Pen” Garret had very humble beginnings on Camelton Rd. in an area of Atlanta Georgia known as “The Swats” (South West Atlanta). Although he is an Atlanta native he primarily grew up in Europe where he & his family moved when he was only five. By age fifteen he already had a record deal with Warner Brother’s records in Europe that unfortunately, eventually fell through. Initially Sean wasn’t interested in writing songs for others he wrote songs for himself & other people constantly requested that he write for them. As a young adult Sean moved back to the States and found himself in the Carolinas pursuing a career as a mortgage broker. Deep down inside he knew his unyielding passion for music wouldn’t allow him to continue doing something he really didn’t want to do.
He crossed paths with the late Shakir Stuart and gave him a three song writer’s demo and was immediately signed to a publishing deal by L.A. Reid. The result of this deal garnered three immediate monster hits on Jive Records “Yeah” by Usher, Goodies by Ciara, as well as “Run It” by Chris Brown. From that point his career as a writer began to sky rocket. He wrote nine songs on the very last Destiny’s Child album. He says when he writes for other people he puts himself in their shoes. For instance if he writes from a female perspective he may use the problems a female family member is having or had in their relationship as a point of reference. Even though he writes with passion, emotion and inspiration from real events he ardently “respects the G-Code” and will never write a song that bashes men. He’s doesn’t want to be considered as just a song writer, and says it’s hurtful when people say that because, first and foremost he considers himself to be an artist. Furthermore he considers the other artist that he writes for as partners. He says that when people buy his songs they are actually buying his swag and a conscience brand. The fun loving Pisces thrives on creativity as well as competition and says he loves to spar with his peers and contemporaries in his field. With Hit records like Beyonce’s “Diva”, Mario’s “Break Up” And Usher’s “Papers” to his credit he makes no bones or apologies about proclaiming himself to be the greatest song writer alive!
FLOSSMAGAZINE.COM YOUNG, RICH AND FAMOUS ISSUE
With a solid track record of hits and no signs of slowing down Sean’s future is brighter than ever. In the immediate future he has plans on dropping an album as an artist with callabo’s from Drake, Lil’ Wayne, T-Pain, Plies, and Nikki Minaj by late summer or early fall of this year. In fact the untitled album’s first single is called “Get it off” featuring Nikki Minaj. He also has another reggae tinged club banger entitled “Massive Attack” with Ms.Minaj which is currently blasting out of many car stereo systems and getting plenty of radio spins nation wide. In terms of artist that he hasn’t worked with as yet he revealed to Floss that he would love to do a sexy callabo with Robin Thicke and a song with Kanye West because as he says they are “both a little crazy.” The primary goal of his new solo album is to ensure that all the ladies are happy. In addition to all his musical endeavors “The Pen” just started a foundation called the Sean Garret Foundation for Children in his native Atlanta which encourages the youth to go down the right path. He’s also a very fashion conscious individual who states he loves fashion because it has no boundaries and has plans to come out with his own line of sun glasses and ink pens. After all is said and done Sean Garret has aspirations of owning his own label being a multi media mogul and the greatest song writer living. To keep up with “The Pen” and his movement log onto www.Iamthepen.com or follow him on twitter @sdotthepen.

ustin Benjamin Alex Rucker a.k.a Ja-Bar is in his break out year as he steps up to represent the S.O.D Money Gang camp with his yet untitled debut album. FLOSS recently had the opportunity to talk with him exclusively about his start, his present and his future. Ja-Bar is A 19 year-old rap artist, fresh out of Atlanta, Georgia, where he heard the sounds of the dirty south but had no intentions of entering the business as an artist. But after meeting Souljaboytellem and traveling the world his ideals changed. Ja-Bar was introduced to Souljaboytellem by his manager CEO Mike and they immediately hit it off as friends. In 2007 Souljaboytellem asked Ja-Bar, if he really wants to do the music thing and he replied “yeah”! They
ventured into the studio and recorded some songs together giving birth to Ja-Bar’s solo career and advancing his love for music. When asked about the direction he is going in with his album Ja-Bar describes it as Ja-Bar music. Shortly after, Souljaboytellem began to post videos on the internet of songs they recorded, Ja-Bar’s popularity grew and a bidding war to sign him began between E1, Universal, Atlantic, SRC, Interscope and J Records. After hearing the various deal offers, he decided Universal Music would be the most suitable fit for his brand. His single “Daze” with Souljaboytellem currently on heavy rotation on radio is an eclectic down south banger with a melodic twist. The song describes him and Souljaboytellem on a journey, in a daze floating through money. Art often imitate life and Ja-Bar is
definitely in a daze as he is set to release his solo album and begin to build his brand. Ja-Bar says “a couple of things I picked up from watching Souljaboytellem is to make sure you take care of your business. He’s on top of his business so I stay on top of mine.” He added “another habit I quickly picked up he explained is when Souljaboytellem isn’t traveling, he’s home working and I learned you got to stay recording new songs”. Asked where he sees himself in 5 years, Ja-Bar began to talk about expanding the clothing line he owned since he was in the 10th grade called Cupid Clothing; he says “look out for Cupid Clothing, as it continues to grow”. Now that there are two kids in a candy store, Ja-Bar says “it’s always great to have a buddy who is talented to share a journey with and to show the world my unique sound”. His album is mostly produced by Souljaboy and also appearing on the album will be a duet with Keri Hilson. Some of the artist JaBar would love to work with includes Erykah Badu, Lil’ Wayne, Outkast and Three-6Mafia. He also plans on taking piano lessons to round off his craft as an artist. You can follow Ja-Bar on twitter for updates tours and just plain ole entertainment at twitter. com/JBARsodmg.

Raheem DeVaughn: The Man Behind the MasterPeace
“
“
B y, D e b r a P a m p l i n
A LOOK AHEAD
“The Love & War MasterPeace is one half social commentary, one half love,” explains the soul singer. “With everything going on, it just feels like the right time for it. As a country I think we’ve made some progress, but we remain divided—it’s still poverty versus wealth and good versus evil. We’re separated by skin color and religion, politics and control over natural resources. I think of this album as a natural extension of where I am personally and where we are as a nation.”Raheem DeVaughn tapped Princeton professor and public intellectual Dr. Cornel West for a series of poetic, politically charged interludes. The unlikely pair met at the 2007 BET Hip-Hop Honors ceremony and have kept in close touch ever since. “Dr. West has an infectious spirit. Even if you don’t know who he is, he commands you to listen,” says DeVaughn. “He’s in tune with his power and he uses it for good.”Produced largely in part by Kenny Dope, The Love & War MasterPeace is a combination of songs that are half socially conscious and half love. Most of DeVaughn’s musical influences are experiences of those close to him. For example, on the bluesy “Soldier’s Story,” DeVaughn sings a dialogue between a nervous young man headed to Iraq and his worried mother. “That song was inspired by a friend of mine in Maryland,” he notes. “I saw him in the barbershop right before he left for Iraq. The next time I ran into him, he was missing both of his legs.” DeVaughn describes his life after signing as a “roller coaster ride: It has been good, taught
me patience, and I see no reason to change a lot.” If granted one wish, DeVaughn would wish for the full support and understanding of the record company he is currently working for. Fans can expect classic, timeless, feel good music from his latest project. DeVaughn strongly suggests the deluxe, double disc version of the album as more tracks are provided, giving the full picture of the album’s intention. As his definition of love, DeVaughn says love is a number of things: courage, hope, support, strength, and weakness. All of those words can be used to describe the emotion found within the album. Want to know where DeVaughn gets his in-style threads? His stylists hook him up with designs from 5001 flavors. The quite popular fashion designers supply many artists with their labels.
A LOOK BACK
It is clear looking back on his path to stardom that DeVaughn wasn’t granted a record deal without a lot of hard work. When he first arrived to D.C. DeVaughn worked at Tower Records. It was there that he gained business contacts, promoted his own music by working on the street to spread the word around, sold mixtapes of unreleased material to build hype, and promoted impromptu shows at local venues. Still today, DeVaughn doesn’t quit promoting himself: “I’m my best marketing tool. I’m building the brand Raheem DeVaughn. I have to do it” DeVaughn has been compared to Dwele, Van Hunt, D’Angelo, Marvin Gaye, Donny
FLOSSMAGAZINE.COM YOUNG, RICH AND FAMOUS ISSUE
Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. DeVaughn has described himself as an “R&B hippie neo-soul rock star,” a take on the difficulty media types have classifying him.
ALBUMS AND AWARDS His debut album, “The Love Experience” was released in 2005 and reached number 46 on the Billboard 200 album chart. His second album, “Love Behind the Melody” was released in January of 2008 and features the singles “Woman” and “Customer” DeVaughn was nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 2008 Grammy Awards for his single, “Woman”. This song was featured as iTune’s single of the week, for the week of January 27, 2008. He also was nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the Grammys in 2008. Other 2008 nominations include three from BET Awards in the categories of Best Male R&B Artist, Song of the Year for “Woman” and Live Performer of the Year. In 2009, DeVaughn received a second nomination from the Grammy’s for Best R&B Song, “Customer”.In 2008, through BET Music Awards, DeVaughn was nominated and won in two categories. Album of the Year for “Love Behind the Melody” and also Male Vocalist of the Year were the two awards granted to DeVaughn for his hard works and talent. From his early start of an independent grass roots artist, to the popular R&B singer he has become, DeVaughn is still the same person, vowing not to be changed by his stardom.

FLOSS recently chopped it up with Mid West artist Blue Moon and his label Dae One Records CEO Sergio Giles. Blu Moon’s name was adapted from his father “Moon Man” an established musician in the Caribbean scene. He took the moon and put the Blu in front and that’s how his name was established. At a young age in Nassau Bahamas, Blu Moon heard LL Cool J’s mega hit song “I’m bad” and fell in love with the art form known as Hip-Hop. At the age of eight he moved to Florida and later met a guy name Lamar who ran his own label and was doing shows with acts like Jagged Edge, Jon B and Destiny Child. One day Blu Moon decided to skip his finals because he heard Jon B had an autograph signing. He got as fresh as he could and went toting his demo he made with a karaoke machine. When he got to the front of the line, he said “I’m trying to get out there as an artist” and then broke into his rap song. The response was great everyone clapped, but he soon learned he needed a demo upgrade. He went to the studio with his partner and made
a one song demo which got them signed to Koch Records. Unfortunately his partner in the group got locked up and he was left on his own. Blu knew some one in Michigan and traveled there to meet Dae One Records CEO, Sergio Giles and been working with him ever since. Opening for the biggest acts coming thru Detroit such as T.I, David Banner, Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane gave Blu Moon the experience and notoriety he needed to get to the next level. Upon Blu Moon’s debut album “My Time To Shine” his label owner Sergio Giles says “the album is eclectic and different in respect that he is not talking about the usual jewels , money and women. Instead he talks about issues like baby mama drama and real life issues”. Sergio who is an independent owner of Dae One Records describes how he met Howard Hertz at a dinner party in which he played Blu Moons tracks, ”I played some joints and the room loved it. Howard immediately took note and pick up Blu Moon as a client. Howard who is also known as Eminem’s Lawyer is now shopping for the right distribution deal for Blu Moon and Dae One Records. Blu Moon is also dropping his tee shirt line which you can find at myspace.com/blumoon88, twitter. com/blumoon09. For collaborations and bookings contact Sergio Giles at email Daeonerecords@ msn.com.
Charm’s Indie Movement
by P. Patino
While surfing the net checking out new talent, I ran across a young hip hop artist who really intrigued me. Charm’s had one of the most unique voices I’ve heard in a very long time. I learned that at the very young age of 16, Charm’s caught the attention of several record labels, after winning talent competitions in New York. But at that time, the music industry taught him some very hard lessons. Therefore, Charm’s decided to form his own independent record label called Woodwork Records. This decision gave him the opportunity to create his own sound and be totally in charge of his own destiny. I asked Charm’s if he feels that he needs to compromise his style to keep up with the times. He said “In order to be in this business for the long run you have to be able to do what’s relevant to YOU, as an artist, but you also need to be AWARE of the changes in the industry in order for it to make sense”. When asked about his opinion on the state of hip hop music today, Charm’s said “I feels good about the hip hop industry to a certain extent because there’s so many different types of Hip Hop artist that are doing their thing now, ranging from Lil Wayne to Jay Z, Kid Cudi, Soulja Boy, Cory Gunz and Ransom, cuz Kids Gotta Eat”!!! He recorded songs with some of Hip Hop’s hottest up and coming producers like Apple Juice Kid (‘’Apple Color Car’’, ‘’Stripper Myth’’,) ‘’Pause’’, Moezarht (‘’Nextel Chirp’’), Ty Trackz (‘’Love Permanent Inc.’’) and Miller Time(‘’Kiss The Girl’s). Charm’s ‘’Pause’’ music video was number 43 out of 4,000 other hip hop videos on www.Ourstage.com. As part of Charm’s indie movement, he released his first CD titled Charm’s Hip Hop Music Vol.1 Hosted by Dj Bedtyme 357. I had to check this out on ITunes and Cdbaby.com and was not disappointed. He released his second album Charm’s ‘’I Love Corey” The Best of Charms Hip Hop Music Vol. 2 online as well. I got a chance to hear some of the songs on his next projects titled “The Cherry Lounge EP” and “Drink Match My Clothes EP” and I must say I can’t wait to check out the entire album because what I got to hear in the studio is HOTTTT!!! Was he going to die? What would he tell his family? What would his legacy be? Grace, Guts and Glory in America tells the story of Hill’s recovery, and how the intervention of both medicine and faith saved his life. • 57 STREET LIFE quote,” Gauld says, “Nothing has a stronger influence psychologically on children than the unlived lives of their parents.” Gauld’s advice to parents: Live a little. How? Lead by example, Take risks in front of your child, Do something each day for pure joy, Tackle the deep attitudes that hold you back, Accept what your own parents gave you, what they tried to give you, and what they were unable to give you, Understand your job as a parent. “This is the foundation of parenting,” Gauld says. “Like any job, one must understand the duties and responsibilities that go along with it. Most of the unproductive issues we get into as parents stem from the conflict between the role we want to play in our child’s life, rather than accepting the role we need to play.”
KIDS ARE THE FUTURE; ARE PARENTS DOING ALL THEY CAN TO GET THEM READY?
I
t’s the beginning of a new decade, and once again our intentions turn to fresh starts, personal improvements, and resolutions. But what if our goals were to move beyond more exercise and weight loss? This is an excellent time to consider improvements we can make as parents. So what can we work on in 2010? “As parents, we make mistakes every day,” says parenting expert Laura Gauld, award-winning co-author of the book The Biggest Job We’ll Ever Have and creator of the effective parenting seminars that emerged from it. “And that’s all right. We will never be perfect. For example, Gauld offers, we can be friendly with our children, but we are not their “friends.” Also, we love our children, yet we must resist seeking their love. Our role is to teach, and guide, and to establish a foundation of character. Finally, take some time this year to build family traditions. “The big picture of raising children is done with the actions, routines, and practices that make up a lifetime of memories, habits, and character,” says Gauld. “It is never too late to start a family tradition. Often, the value of these actions is seen looking back at one’s upbringing.” If you get so busy with school, work and the day’s activities that you’re missing meals with your family, find a way to establish dinner as a meal where everyone sits down together. Light candles at the dinner table. “Studies show that simply having dinner together reduces the chances of depression in teens, drug use, and other challenges to young lives. If a shared meal seems an impossible task, remember that an improvement in parenting requires a commitment to priorities—and those priorities need to be made clear.”
