The CEDIA Smart Home Awards is an annual showcase of excellence demonstrated by home technology professionals and manufacturers across the globe. The shows recognize the top projects, products, and individuals in the smart home technology industry — truly the cream of the crop. CEDIA Fellow | James Chen

The CEDIA Fellows represent a group of individuals who have helped shape the industry and significantly contribute to the association’s success. James Chen is a US-Australian entrepreneur and global technology thought leader with over 30 years of experience in the AV industry. He began his career as an integrator, and is now the Managing Director of cable manufacturer, Kordz. Since joining the company in 2008, Chen has spearheaded Kordz’ development of multi-award-winning and patented cable innovation and expanded distribution to more than 40 countries.

“It was a delightful surprise when David Weinstein phoned me to let me know of this honour,” said Chen. “I am greatly humbled to be welcomed amongst such notaries that have helped CEDIA become the vanguard of the industry it is today. This award would not be possible without a team effort, and I thank those who have taught me, welcomed me onto committees, become my trusted friends, and generally put up with me over the past 30+ years. Here’s to continuing this great journey together.”

Chen serves on CEDIA’s Technology Education Committee and Governance Committee. A technology enthusiast, Chen recently completed his study of Artificial Intelligence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He regularly authors and presents on topics regarding technology to audiences around the world.

CEDIA Lifetime Achievement Award | Steve Moore

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises an individual who has demonstrated innovative and visionary leadership in the technology design and installation industry. Steve Moore decided against a career in architecture to launch a business selling high-end AV to music-loving homeowners nearly 40 years ago. He then left to set up SMC in 1993 and, inspired by a visit to CEDIA Expo that year, helped to launch CEDIA in the UK, running it alongside his own company from his London dining room, subsequently teaching at numerous CEDIA events worldwide. SMC, like the industry in general, has grown enormously since then, and Moore has consulted for a wide variety of technology businesses, large and small, along the way. With strong successors running SMC, Moore is now semiretired, and continues to support others operating in the connected home space.

“The best thing about this industry is all the wonderful people I’ve met and worked with over the years,” said Moore. “A huge number of individuals have selflessly provided so much of their time and expertise (which I’ve benefited from as much as others) and I’m therefore surprised, flattered, and humbled to have been recognized. It’s always inspiring to see the energy and enthusiasm of newcomers to this world, and I’m embarrassingly proud to have seen my own company grow to the point where the children of early employees are now key members of staff themselves. Thank you to CEDIA and all those who have put up with me all this time – especially my long-suffering partners and my own fantastic children and stepchildren.”

Luxury Kent Home TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Inspired Dwellings As a developer, the homeowner already had a clear appreciation of the potential of smart technology. He had two opposing performance requirements: to create an “entertainment hub” for family and friends and an intimate, secure home for when he was alone. All systems within the 15,000 sq. ft new build, set in the Kent countryside, have been integrated through a Crestron control system. This allows all AV, HVAC, shading, access, and security to be controlled easily through Crestron keypads, remotes, and mobile app; facilitating management of this extensive property. TVs have been discreetly “hidden” across the house. These include mirror TVs in the bar/drawing room, one in the music room, revealed via automated panels, and one in a hidden lift at the base of the master bed. A dedicated 14-seat cinema fulfils the owner’s passion for film and sport and features seat rumblers, which allows the occupant to “feel” the screen action. As a safety feature, when a film is paused, the step lighting automatically turns on to allow movement around the room. Privacy is enabled through lighting and blind control, while instant window frosting can be applied at the touch of a button. There is even a custom “deer patrol” feature which automatically plays a barking dog sound if an animal enters the vegetable patch. TVs have been discreetly hidden across the house, including mirror TVs in the bar/drawing room.

As security was high on the agenda, key sub systems have been integrated including double entry gates, video entry and CCTV, with motion detection and line-cross features. 9

Mosaic TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Mosaic AV The requirement was for a high level of automation and system control in a large residence in London. The owner wanted their home to be able to react to its environment and automatically make adjustments; to optimise comfort and cost efficiency. The solution is based around a KNX system, which integrates all core services, and a combination of internal and external sensors. The water system, which provides hot water for showers and baths can adjust the temperature and heating schedule based on usage patterns and preferences. Similarly, the heating system maintains a comfortable temperature based on pre-set preference and historical usage. A ventilation system ensures optimal air quality by circulating fresh and removing stale air, and also detects humidity levels to prevent moisture build up and mould growth. The integrator has also added features which protect both the occupiers and the property itself. Security cameras with motion detection send alerts to a phone or other device while security images can be viewed on any TV throughout the house. Sensors identify leaks in the plumbing system and can shut off the water supply to prevent damage to the home, while the fireplace can detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Along with bell boxes, PIRs and internal sounders provide 24/7 monitoring of the home.

There are environmental benefits too, in particular energy savings, as the lights can be set to turn off or on at certain times of the day and communal rooms have PIR which automatically switch lights on for a determined amount of time. 13

Sandton TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

BNC Technology ‘Sandton’ is a phenomenal, contemporary house designed by a leading architect, which includes a home theatre, games room, and wine cellar, along with a pool area. The client was looking for full integration of all key systems including AV, intercom, lighting/shade, and HVAC to provide effortless control, lifestyle convenience, and enhanced security of their home. One of the primary motivations for implementing home automation was to improve energy efficiency. By automating routine tasks and adding sensors to adjust or shut down systems, the homeowner has benefited from cost savings and reduced environmental impact. The lighting system, for example, incorporates lux sensors which detect the natural daylight in a room and adjust the lighting accordingly, while motion detectors turn lights on/ off in common walkways. Furthermore, the owner can control all aspects of the property from an app, ensuring energy consumption is optimised even when they are absent. The house has been customised to suit each member of the family. Every bedroom has a personalised keypad to reflect individual preferences, such as lighting and AV, activated at the touch of a single button. Similarly, personalised car remotes open an allocated garage and switch on lights to a set scene.

The integrators installed hidden Amina speakers in the wall while the subwoofer is hidden in the bottom of the cabinet.

As power outages are common in the region, the integrator has taken measures to ensure uninterrupted power supply by installing a backup system which minimises downtime and protects sensitive equipment from damage. In the event of an extended outage, a solar power system seamlessly takes over. 17

The Manor TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Dawsons AV The owner of this 17th century country house wanted to turn it into a fully integrated smart home. As a listed property, the project was constrained by both planning controls and governance by English heritage, with specific guidance on minimising tech clutter. A Crestron home system was chosen for its simplicity of use and the ability for Dawsons to make any required changes remotely. To meet the demands of the brief, and keep technology discreet, each room has a Crestron keypad for lighting control and, in key areas, a 7" touch screen for more complex operations including AV, lighting, heating, security, and shading. Every room has been fitted with Amina plaster-over speakers, compact freestanding active subwoofers, and a hidden Bang & Olufsen Beosound Core — an intelligent wireless streaming connectivity hub. The TV displays are also connected into these units, allowing TV sound to automatically play through the ceiling speakers when the TV is switched on. No other user interaction is required. Getting consent from English Heritage proved challenging at times. In the music room, an over-mantel piece of artwork was Heritage listed in its own right and needed to be protected from direct or bright sunlight. The solution was to include light level sensors in the windows, which automatically lower the blinds. The Crestron Home system allows the client to create his own lighting scenes that immediately propagate to all interfaces.

Macbee Pvt Ltd This remarkable project is one of the largest private residences in India. The entire estate is equipped with an advanced automation system which can be managed from anywhere in the world using the client’s phone. The sheer size of the property means that energy efficiency is a major consideration. The lighting system throughout is synchronised with the astronomical clock, ensuring that the lights are automatically adjusted according to the time of day. Automated temperature control has been implemented within the HVAC system to help minimise energy usage. The house has also been fitted with an array of data-capturing sensors that collect valuable real-time information about every aspect of the home. This includes data on energy produced through the Distribution Generation system such as solar panel performance and battery charging status. The house features an impressive party room with dynamic lighting, including pixel lighting, strobe lights, and fibre optics, which respond and synchronise with the music and beats in the room to create a captivating immersive experience. The bar’s back panel lighting is programmed in Python to create a mesmerising floating cloud effect. The prayer music is programmed to play twice daily for a duration of 30 minutes in both the dedicated prayer room and the lobby of the main building. At his request, the client can access real-time data on the weather including wind, humidity, and UV levels through his mobile app. He can also track indoor and outdoor Air Quality Index levels. 25

SMC The owner was a tech enthusiast who had high expectations for his contemporary home, which was designed with his young family in mind. Security of the property and its occupants was a priority. The comprehensive solution includes perimeter and internal intruder detection, 4K CCTV and monitoring system, and customised external door access using facial recognition technology. An “airlock” system means that if the external gate is open, neither the garage nor front door will open to prevent someone being followed into the property. The house features numerous innovative bespoke systems. An interactive staircase plays music and lights up when in use. Different moods, colours, and effects can be selected including “playing the piano”. This required the integration of lighting within the stair treads along with a significant, complex arrangement of cabling and sensors. A remarkable passenger lift provides an immersive “ride experience” achieved through screens on all six faces displaying motion-based video content fed from an IP-connected local player. The integrator was required to calculate the heat load and weight of all the equipment needed and drop test it for safety. An indoor slide with integral DMX-controlled lighting and audio, fed by the central AV distribution system, is triggered by motion. The guest powder room contains programmable LED twinkly lights which can display any design, created on the owner’s phone for theatrical effect. A Crestron control system with a bespoke user interface simplifies control of everything from lighting, window treatments and HVAC to AV, security, and access. 29

Villa Babou TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Henri This luxurious villa on the beautiful Island of Corsica serves as a relaxing holiday retreat for the family. As the property is also rented out for most of the year, the home integration system had to be extremely user-friendly to fulfil the needs of guests. On arrival, an automated “Welcome Scene” creates the perfect atmosphere in the villa. At the end of the stay, a “Full Off ” scene facilitates closure. The music solution is very simple and consists of VSSL audio streamers which allow users to stream music directly from their own devices through in-ceiling Bowers and Wilkins speakers. Motion detectors in the bathroom trigger “night lights”. Due to its remote location on an island, the integrator faced various technical challenges. High-speed fibre broadband is not yet available so, to achieve sufficient bandwidth, Henri used a flow aggregator that combines multiple 4G cellular routers and the ADSL line. The system has been designed to be easily switched to fibre when it becomes available. Because of the poor quality of the power supply, the installation is protected with UPS and battery backup. If the situation arises, an alert is sent to the Crestron processor to turn off all equipment properly. A local computer has been installed, equipped with the necessary software to enable remote monitoring and access to the villa’s system. All interior and exterior lighting (346 circuits) is controlled by Crestron din modules.

Holland House TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

SMC SMC provided a comprehensive but easy-to-use home automation system for a 5-storey family home in Holland Park. Crestron was selected to integrate control of HVAC, security, lighting/shading, and AV. One of the highlights of the property is an entertainment space which replicates the client’s favourite club. To achieve the immersive sound performance of a professional venue, a 25 channel L-Acoustics Creations sound system has been installed with a Dante controller, which allows the client to use his DJ equipment anywhere in the room. Lutron’s Timeclock provides smart, energy saving control of lighting and window treatments. At sunset, the external lights are switched on and the blinds close, with the opposite at sunrise. During the colder months, the blinds raise during the day to capture warmth from the sun and close when it has gone to preserve heat. The rooflights have built-in rain sensors and automatically close if rain is detected. The integrator has introduced features which facilitate management of this large house. If there is an issue with any of the HVAC systems, the owner is notified via an alert to the Crestron touchscreens. Using PIRs when activity is not detected within the main entertainment spaces, the rooms will default to standby mode. As part of a grade 3 intruder alarm system, integrated motorised Abloy locks provide extra protection for the family, as doors can be locked via Crestron. A “holiday mode” triggers macros within Crestron to turn all systems to a predefined setting. 37

Knektd Ltd The project brief was to create a fully integrated control system for an elegant home in Kensington. Knektd worked closely with the interior design team to ensure the technology blended seamlessly with the contemporary aesthetics. The living room and main reception room both contain The Frame, an incredibly slim 65" Samsung TV. When it’s switched off, it transforms into a glare-free canvas displaying either art or photography. The room also features stylish Wisdom P2m on-wall speakers, while the subwoofer is custom built into the joinery. A compact Yamaha MusicCast surround sound system connects with just a single cable. An eight-zone Crestron NAX audio distribution system enables music to be streamed throughout the property. The main living areas and bedrooms have all been fitted with discreet Sonance in-ceiling speakers which blend into the décor without compromising on audio performance. Even the bathroom and shower/wet room in the master bedroom have Bowers and Wilkins waterproof speakers. A Crestron lighting system highlights the beautiful contemporary design of the home through the creation of preprogrammed lighting scenes for different occasions such as morning coffee, wine & dine, and relax. A one-touch “all-on” and “all-off ” feature simplifies operation. For comfort and energy efficiency, ceiling mounted PIR occupancy and daylight sensors have been placed throughout. Even the bathroom and shower/wet room in the master bedroom have Bowers and Wilkins waterproof speakers.

BNC Technology BNC Technology’s brief was to create a luxurious and immersive home cinema using an existing dining room. A key design requirement was to incorporate the complete system within the room, including the rack, as there was no space elsewhere in the house or scope for external work. The equipment was discreetly hidden within specially constructed walls, but, as a small space, this introduced challenges around sound and heat. Insulation material on the internal walls was key to reducing transmission of sound both to and from adjoining rooms, particularly the kitchen. The windows and external door were filled with absorptive material and drywalled to prevent sound projecting on neighbours. A ducted ventilation system was installed to extract the heat. Fans were fitted in the ceiling on acoustic material to minimise vibration. This installation comprises a JVC projector, a fixed screen from Display Technologies and a Klipsch Dolby Atmos 7.1.2 surround sound system. A Control4 set up brings the room to life. A PlayStation5 has been placed in a storage space on a side wall, with a removable panel to facilitate changing games. The client also wanted to prioritise picture size over audio, while maximising the number of seats. Because of the restricted space, the integrator needed to find the right balance between speaker placement and seat positioning to ensure everyone could appreciate the big screen. This tiny room has been transformed into a relaxing space which can accommodate the whole family. 47

NV Integration A stunning, dedicated home cinema within the newly excavated basement of a country home was built as part of a major refurbishment of the property. The retired owners wanted a stylish, comfortable room which was simple to use and demonstrated quality and value for money. As part of a brand-new construction, the integrator was able to install all equipment out of sight. A baffle wall houses the LCR speakers and subs, surrounded by acoustic treatments to optimise the sound quality, including Vicoustic soundproofing panels to stop any reflections behind the screen. The AV system comprises a JVC 4K projector, a large fixedscreen, Artcoustic Dolby Atmos 7.4.4 surround sound, Kaleidescape movie server, Sonos, and Apple TV. The owners relax in luxurious Fortress red leather home theatre seats which enhance the whole immersive cinema experience. The room is climate controlled and benefits from a Luton HomeWorks lighting system to create the ideal ambiance. For complete ease of use, the entire room is controlled using Crestron handheld remotes and wall panel with a simple GUI, which enables the owners to select a media source and relax in a perfect environment. Stingray TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Blackroom Blackroom has delivered an exceptional home cinema for a film enthusiast. From the moment you enter, the room impresses on every level. At the outset, the integrator changed the shape of the room from an asymmetrical rhombus to a symmetrical 8-sided space to improve the acoustics. The room was fully soundproofed by installing multi-layered acoustical shell on all surfaces and custom-made acoustical panels. An immersive cinematic experience is achieved through an Alcons 9.1.4 Dolby Atmos system with 8 subwoofers, a 4K JVC projector, and a Stewart WallScreen Deluxe. The unusual shape of the room meant it would not behave like a typical rectangular room in terms of sound waves. To optimise sound, all the speakers are perfectly aimed to the centre of the audience between the two rows of seats. Four subs in the front and four in the back of the room have been placed symmetrically in “quarter-points” to provide maximum flexibility for calibration and bass-smoothing. The décor is stunning, from the luxurious wall coverings to the star lights in the ceilings. Two rows of five motorised recliner seats with adjustable head rests enhance the viewing experience. The projector was located in a ventilated hush-box to reduce noise, as it could not be placed outside the room. As the HVAC was unable to cope with the hot air from the projector, intake and outtake fans and a digital temperature meter were added to manage the air temperature. 55

The Ruby Cinema TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Cyberhomes UK Cyberhomes was tasked with creating a visually dramatic home cinema for watching movies, big sporting events, gaming, and presentations with both family and friends. Fine tuning of the design was achieved using 3D renders, including 360 on a VR headset. A “curved” theme, specified by the interior designer, runs through the whole room encompassing the walls, ceiling, and soft furnishings. Bespoke panels were designed to form the stage, steps, and even a curved projector housing which looks like a large eye. Outstanding sound is created through a Dolby Atmos 11.10.6 system using Meridian Digital speakers and a Trinnov processor. For exceptional image quality, the Barco Njord Cinemascope projector is used in conjunction with a Screen Excellence Enlightor Neo AT screen. As the room can accommodate up to 15 people, and the owner likes to play music at high volume, the integrator developed an acoustic barrier strategy to prevent noise transfer. The front wall, for example, includes a 3-layer baffle construction. Aesthetics and comfort were high on the client’s agenda. There are three rows of luxurious, reclining home theatre seats with the front row being D-box motion enabled for enhanced viewing and gaming. Video tiling means multiple sporting events can be watched simultaneously. A customised fibre optic Starscape ceiling even has shooting stars. Simple control of the room has been achieved using a Savant control system via an app, remotes, and wall panels with preprogrammed buttons such as “auto reset” for when the room is vacant. 59

Adair Acoustic Design & DNA Cinemas The performance objective was to create the “best private cinema” to entertain the client’s guests from across the world with film, music, and theatre. Exceptional sound was vital to the success of the project.

A highspecification audio system combined with clever acoustic design give this home cinema an exceptional sound quality.

The starting space was a concrete shell in the basement. The integrators who collaborated on the project built a room within a room floating on an isolated concrete slab to achieve full sound isolation from a neighbouring nightclub and shooting range. Using a complex construction of membrane absorbers and wood board, an internal acoustic shell allows bass absorption and helps achieve a balanced room response. Angled panels at the back of the room minimise back wall reflection, like a wave breaking on a beach rather than hitting a vertical wall. The audio had to be designed around the client’s 6.5m Samsung Wall screen, which limited space for speaker positioning. A Wisdom system provided the solution and includes two Sage Cinema Line array speakers on the left and right sides of the screen, as well as a Horizontal Line Source centre speaker across the top. The Cinema Line speakers eliminate floor and ceiling reflection and feature high-output woofers which deliver power and dynamics uniformly across the room. To maximise the bass impact and time congruency, a row of Wisdom STS subs has been placed across the front wall of the cinema below the screen. This provides a well-aligned planar wave of bass that travels down the room in sync with sound from the main left and right speakers. 63

Notting Hill Experience TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

M.E.G.A. AV Installations Ltd The client wanted to use one end of their large basement as a sitting room and occasional cinema, for watching movies and gaming, with the other end as a gallery for contemporary art. To keep the AV equipment hidden when out of use, and avoid any impact on the room aesthetics, the 4K JVC projector has been fitted on a Future Automation lift, while the screen is a 110” Screen Excellence retractable model. The area is long, and divided by a curtain, so one of main challenges was only being able to use the ceiling and back wall for speaker placement. The integrator opted for a Triad 7.3 surround configuration. By using speakers with angled drivers, it was possible to direct sound to the seating positions instead of the floor; and made the front speakers sound as if they were behind the screen. The room had a high ceiling and polished concrete floor, resulting in high reverberation, so acoustic treatment was extensive, in particular on the ceiling which has various 3D diffusers working as a bass trap and room deadening. The back wall is filled with dense ROCKWOOL and has a bank of seven diffusers running in the middle of it. There was a late request for a Sony PSP5, but due to the 25m distance from the seating area to the rack room, it was decided to keep the console behind the sofa and use an HDMI over HDBaseT extender. 67

The Loft TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Tera Generations Solutions A stunning Middle Eastern tradition inspired room provides a space for relaxation and entertainment within a luxury residence in Pakistan. The submerged seating layout, which differs considerably from traditional theatre-style seating, presented a number of challenges in order to deliver multi-direction viewing angles and optimal listening experience. A 120-inch ALR screen from Vivid Storm, with acoustically transparent black drop, ensures fluent sound sound transmission and counters dispersion from the front speakers. The screen housing has been placed within an artificial ledge, built across the entire floor, to raise its height. This serves to achieve the desired viewing angle for the seating area. A motorised, tensioned bracket system confirms the screen is flat and rigid, to avoid any vibrations. The room is also equipped with a 7.1.2 Atmos surround sound system and an ultra-short throw ChiQ projector. A combination of absorption and diffusion techniques were employed to achieve the desired acoustic balance and optimal immersive cinematic experience. A stunning, designer “ping pong” table, made of glass, provides the focal point in the rear of the room. Additional absorption panels were applied on either side of the area to mitigate any negative impact on the overall sound quality.

Two linear diffused ceiling coves run across the room to give it a cinematic feel, while roll-up blackout shades further improve picture quality during daytime viewing. Ivy Cottage Media Lounge TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

The Big Picture The challenging brief was to create a media room in a modest lounge, in a Victorian house, while maintaining the original styling and features of the property. The client is a musician and wanted a dedicated cinema plus the ability to play music very loudly, whereas his wife wanted a warm and cosy space to relax, with no visible technology, and did not want music reverberating around the home. Taking into consideration the goals of the installation, and the space limitations, The Big Picture designed bespoke cabinets, In American Black Walnut (and fumed Louro Faia), to house the core AV equipment. A purpose-built screen wall sits above them. When the screen is not in use, it is covered by a roller blind with specially commissioned artwork. Hiding the projector within the room took ingenuity. It has been mounted vertically within the back wall, with the images projected via a specialist angled mirror. A piece of art, to match the room’s décor, covers the projector’s insulated housing.

Cladding the ceiling and walls in ROCKWOOL addressed the clients acoustic demands, along with building a specially designed acoustic door, adding 6mm pegboards (reflecting & defusing the sound back into the room). Huge bass traps are sited in four of the six vertical corners and the cornice has been extended for bass diffusion. Stylish specialist acoustic fabric, in teal velvet, provides the desired cosiness, and additional sound insulation. The subwoofers have been fixed to the solid chimney breast, to avoid vibrations on the wooden floors, and disguised using fake doors. 75

Media Room for Grown Ups TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Butler Harwell The family wanted to create a dual-purpose living room: a family-friendly space during the day and a luxurious home cinema in the evening. It was important that the technology did not encroach on either the storage or floor space and was safe from inquisitive children damaging expensive equipment or causing injury to themselves. The room has two different AV setups. For the adults, there is a Barco CinemaScope 5K projector with a Screenline motorised drop-down tensioned screen in widescreen format, complemented by an Artcoustic surround sound system for immersive enjoyment of blockbuster movies and concerts. For everyday viewing, there is a 55" TV which uses a daytime, lowlevel audio profile consisting primarily of the front loudspeakers. The front speakers could not sit behind the screen, as there was no space for an AT model, so a high-output Artcoustic soundbar has been placed in front of the screen, in a recess, to achieve the desired SPL levels. A ceiling bulkhead disguises the projector and reduces unwanted noise. As full acoustic treatment was not possible, soft and absorptive fabrics have been used, where feasible, to mitigate undesired reflections. These include a soft fabric sofa, heavy curtains/ blinds, large rug, and canvas artwork. There is a Barco CinemaScope 5K projector with a Screenline motorised drop-down tensioned screen in widescreen format.

To retain the feel of a lounge, the main components of the system are hidden within bespoke joinery, which also provides display shelves and storage for toys. Recessed LED lighting adds to the overall styling and ambiance. 79

ARLED Solutions GmbH The goal was to create a space to showcase a new level of luxury home cinema where customers could become fully immersed in a digital world. In addition to experiencing stateof-the-art-projection technology and audio systems, there is the added dimension that all available surfaces, from wall to ceiling, display digital images. The facility, which is approximately 6.1 m in size internally, is built on a “room within a room” concept. All the surrounding base walls are made of solid stone, with comprehensive acoustic treatments. The room is designed like an auditorium, with height increasing evenly towards the back, parallel to the rising platform height, to ensure equal room height throughout. The cinema is equipped with two speaker systems from the manufacturers Ascendo (17.2.13 setup) and MAG Cinema (17.1.14 setup) and professional projectors from Barco and Christie. The screen is an impressive 6.1m wide motorised CinemaScope LED model with lateral electric masking and AT film cloth. All systems are controlled using Crestron.

The room is designed like an auditorium, with height increasing evenly towards the back to ensure equal room height throughout.

There are approximately 50 sqm of recordable LED surfaces as well as 300 m of LED strips. All the digital screens, on the sides and ceiling, are fixed at specific angles so that optimum viewing is possible from all the luxurious Moovia home theatre seats. All alignment measures have the goal of always directing the viewer towards the centre of the front screen as the key point of focus. 83

New Wave AV A lifestyle-focussed showroom that allows visitors to understand how professionally installed AV and home automation systems such as lighting/shading, security, and entertainment can make their life more convenient, safe, and enjoyable. There are four defined sections comprising: home cinema, media room, kitchen/hallway, and meeting space. Each area provides an opportunity for visitors to experience the scope of products available and use them in a realistic environment. The cinema room is designed to show the performance which can be achieved within a standard dedicated room (5x4m) along with the importance of treatment, finishes, and lighting. The size requirements for hub end equipment and racks is also on view. The media room provides an opportunity to experience multi-room audio and video. Customers can also see the options for technology to be hidden and incorporated into the fabric of the building such as in-wall speakers, projector drops, and a mirror TV. A “window lightbox”, using a false window backlit by an LED panel, demonstrates different treatments such as sheer blinds, curtains, and blackout. 25 lighting circuits enable a wide range of modern fittings to be displayed, such as art and pin lights, and highlight features such as dimming, preset scenes, and a tuneable white linear LED, linked to the circadian rhythm. A variety of control interfaces are available to trial, ranging from touch panels and remotes to mobile apps and voice control. Cinemaworks Cinemaworks wanted to create a home cinema that was “magical” and yet “attainable”. The business objective was to persuade clients that transforming a spare room into a cinema is a realistic and affordable reality. An unused boardroom has been converted into the showroom. A dividing wall was built to reduce the overall size to better reflect a typical residential room (4.5 x 5m). The smaller side (4.5 x 1.6m) provides an ideal location for the projector and rack, which are easily accessible for viewing. The room has been treated for acoustics, and the ceiling coffer has been modified to give a more contemporary feel. To create an instant impression, an EnVisio Pixel lighting system produces a dazzling array of lighting effects. The walls have a zigzag shape and are covered with elegant Camira fabric. A luxurious cinema sofa with electric recliner adds to the aesthetics. To highlight the high-performance capability of a mid-range cinema system, Cinemaworks used a Sony 4K laser projector, with Klipsch sound system and a 3.0m Cinema Build Systems screen. The resulting sound and picture quality is truly impressive. The lighting is controlled using a Rako system. Preset scenes make it easy to demonstrate the available options. One-touch buttons, for example, give appropriate pixel lighting for different categories of viewing such as kids, film, or sport. Cinemaworks used a Sony 4K laser projector with a Klipsch sound system and a 3.0 m Cinema Build Systems screen.

Dawsons AV Dawsons AV’s client wished to relocate and consolidate his various IT and AV racks into a new location. It involved repurposing a void and constructing a new rack space that partially used this void.

Dawsons AV designed the racks so that they are ganged together, allowing them to move in and out via electric linear rams for rear access.

To minimise the subsequent impact on the living space, Dawsons AV designed the racks so that they are ganged together and can be moved in and out via electric linear rams to allow rear access. The original void space was in existence to allow ventilation and plumbing services to an indoor Hot Tub room. This Hot Tub room was subsequently removed to make way for a gaming room, and the team re-purposed the ventilation services for the new rack’s thermal management. 95

The team has created a brand-new unique interface that is elegant, intuitive, seamless, reliable, and personalised. The UI is designed to be scalable for any size of property with any number of zones without changing the flow/theme. Every graphical element is custom designed. Integrations, automations, and commands have been designed and added to the interface with a view to work in harmony with it. The UI also has features that are not possible or easily done using other systems, including biometric authentication for any action (FaceID/touchID), motion backgrounds, in-app HD full frame rate streams of video sources and CCTV, native iOS keyboard, and speech support to name a few.

The app is not dissimilar to a well thought out website. Backgrounds can sometimes affect the ‘vibe’ of the app, with images ranging from warm, colourful flowery images to darker, abstract images. These can be set to change automatically based on time of day, day of the week, or season. In the settings page, there are options to choose from up to 30 still backgrounds. 99

The design of the room and lighting generally is amazing.

The client wanted a 1920’s Cigar and Whiskey Bar with great lighting and audio. Clarke Infinity used the artist/creator/cabinet maker, Matthew Nunn to build the bar. The integrator took the client to a stone warehouse to personally select the piece of stone the bar was to be made of. They sourced Italian Architettura Sonora Stone Cylinder speakers in a table format with lighting around the base and had custom tabletops made out of the Patagonia Stone. Clarke Infinity completed a full lighting design and installed a coffer for dramatic effect on the ceiling — which was venetian painted with real bronze and 2700k 98CRI LED strip installed in the coffer. The Majik House Co Ltd Extending to 13,000sq/ft of internal floor space, this property comprises four bedrooms, nine bathrooms, an expansive openplan kitchen/dining and living accommodation along with extensive leisure facilities including swimming pool with gym and sauna. Majik House were appointed to design and install the stateof-the-art home automation system that would both enhance the design of the property and, through seamless integration between all the technology, make living in the home an effortless dream. The whole property uses Control4 whole home automation for the audio and video elements, with Lutron QS utilised for the lighting control including Silent Gliss automated blinds and curtain tacks. The integration we achieve between Control4 and Lutron QS means that the whole system is truly integrated, with everything working together. The comms room is the central location for all AV systems and networking. The equipment is housed in three fully cable managed 42U freestanding racks. It also includes one 12U wall mounted rack.
