The industry came together in force across the globe to celebrate. CEDIA EMEA celebrated the work of its members by announcing the winners during a black-tie ceremony at The Brewery, London. Almost 400 industry professionals joined CEDIA for the 17th awards event, with attendees coming from countries including Belgium, India, Pakistan, Cyprus, Germany, France, South Africa, the USA, and the UK.

CEDIA Awards | Judges

The CEDIA Awards judging panel is made up by an impartial group of experts. Technical judges from the US membership thoroughly review the project installation entries, focussing on everything from design and product specification to calibration and documentation. They also assess all entries against industry standards and best practices. The architectural judges include interior designers and property developers. This group consider how technology has complemented the architecture and design. A panel of past award-winning EMEA companies judge the two product categories, covering both hardware and software.

Peter, a 30-year industry veteran, is a partner at Officina Acustica, the manufacturer of bespoke acoustic interior design build systems for private cinemas, media rooms, and professional mastering and mixing spaces. A frequent speaker and volunteer, Peter has been teaching on behalf of CEDIA for 20+ years and was awarded CEDIA’s Training Volunteer of the Year award in 2014 and received EMEA Special Recognition in 2015. He currently serves as chair of the CEDIA/CTA R10 Standards Committee and chair of the R10 WG1 (audio) Working Group. The most recent addition to his resume is the award for the 2022 CEDIA Fellow.

CEDIA Special Recognition | Chris Pinder

From March 27 – April 4, the Chris put his mind and body through an extraordinary challenge at the Marathon des Sables, a multiday race through the Sahara Desert. The 251 km ultramarathon is approximately the distance of six regular marathons and is regarded as the toughest foot race on Earth.

Chris’ motivation to cross the finish line was the thought of all the children he’d be helping. He initially set out to raise 25,000 for Together for Cinema, an organisation that installs home cinemas in children’s hospices across the UK, but his incredible journey quickly sparked the interest of hundreds of people who were in awe of his dedication. His initial goal nearly doubled to over £46,000 from almost 300 donors.

“Having never ran a marathon before, I made the impulsive decision to sign up for the toughest marathon on earth, knowing it would be an eyebrow-raising challenge to help Together for Cinema raise funds to build five more cinema rooms,” said Chris.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Intuitive Homes

This objective for Intuitive Homes was to provide a fully integrated home as part of a new build development in Cheshire, with a focus on a seamless user experience and value for money.

Intuitive Homes specified a simple yet powerful centralised control system that sees Crestron Home combined with a Lutron HomeWorks QSX system. This allowed all media, security, and lifestyle requirements to be integrated without compromising on the aesthetics of the home. An additional Crestron processor maintains a lot of the clever automations and integrations that they offer their custom Crestron clients.

The property features a total of 24 audio zones comprising 3 Crestron Amps, one Sonos Amps, two Anthem AVRs and three Sonos One standalone speakers. Intuitive Homes opted for 4k video distributed to 9 video zones, with an additional 6 zones of Freeview and builtin apps on the TVs.

The lighting system includes over 300 DALI ballasts making up 211 circuits and controlled via 65 Alisse keypads. Intuitive Homes programmed standard scenes for every room which are ‘bright,’ ‘relaxed,’ ‘low,’ and also any specific scenes required for rooms such as ‘cooking’ in the kitchen or ‘shower’ in the bathrooms.

Security was a key priority for the client so Intuitive Homes integrated with the Texecom alarm system to provide automations based on the state of the alarm. For gate entry and access control, 2N door entry panels were installed at two gate positions, with an additional pedestrian gate at the side of the house.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Finite Solutions

This is a project that began nine years ago. With the property onto its third owner since construction began, Finite Solutions had to keep redesigning the system to meet the needs of each owner. The final purchaser had experience with home technology and requested a Control4 system, Sonos music distribution, and door entry from street level. Located in Central London, privacy and security were major concerns for the client.

Finite Solutions ensured the security element was truly integrated and simple by specifying the Texecom Premier Elite alarm system with discreet contact sensors. Control4 integration removed the necessity for additional alarm only keypads around the house. Being a partially wireless solution, it worked with the limited existing alarm cabling in place. For door entry, a 2N direct intercom solution was installed.

A Lutron Homeworks QS system with central panelised dimming and motor control modules controls the lighting, mirror demisters, and blinds/curtain and window opening control. Palladium keypads are used throughout predominantly for lighting control but also control of local in room window treatments and basic playlist / favourite selection and volume control in certain rooms.

Silent Gliss blinds and curtains are implemented through most rooms, with the main double height living room featuring both curtains and blind treatments. Control over the blinds and curtains is done via Lutron keypads and the Control4 systems interfaces.

Finite Solutions has delivered a comprehensive smart home that is easy to operate and genuinely intelligent in the background, with system integration between the subsystems being well utilised as much as the scope of control and functionality allowed.

In the words of one of the judges, this was a heroic rescue project with plenty of challenges and customer expectations.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR NGC Systems

NGC Systems had to provide a solution to this upgrade project that would satisfy the needs of both the owner, and the new tenant who would be moving in. And they had to do it all within just two months.

NGC Systems integrated all AV aspects of the project via Crestron, as requested by the clients. Other items such as intercom, security, and HVAC were also controlled via the system. A sliding door between the kitchen and family room is electrically operated by a switch on the wall, and the team integrated this into the Crestron wall panel and iPad convenience.

The integrated installed an NVR security system to allow for line cross and object detection / notification to the staff iPads and security hut monitors. Gate integration was connected via a separate WebRelay to ensure it could be controlled even if the system went offline. A selection of CCTV cameras feeds are able to be viewed from the Crestron interface, and a notification is sent to staff and the security hut when a vehicle is detected arriving.

The integrator worked to ensure local / streamed music can be distributed via the Monitor Audio IMS-4 to any of the 30 separate audio zones. Within this, there are audio breakouts from the Video distribution system and audio return channels from each of the TV zones. A Pulse Eight matrix allows for a mix of stereo and digital input from the various devices.

To distribute centralised video sources in the AV rack to the 16 TV’s installed across the property, NGC systems used Binary MoIP and installed additional audio only receivers.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Synergy Technologies

Due to the client travelling a lot for work, security was high on the list of priorities. He also requested a fully integrated solution that would allow him to control and monitor all the systems including lighting, shading, temperature, safety and security, spa, and entertainment. He wanted his home to be his getaway place from the rigours of life and for it to operate as one complete, effortless, and integrated entity.

The chosen control system allows the client to have access to all integrated systems on one application through a unified interface. It also offers remote access control and the ability to monitor the real time status of all sub systems.

Synergy Technologies chose Lutron HomeWorks and Sivoia QS for lighting and shading control, and worked with a combination of lighting control technologies, including phase dimming, switching, and DALI. The team programmed a selection of lighting scene presets and events for when certain light conditions are met.

Regarding security, respective lighting is activated in the dark hours through trigger signals received from the CCTV cameras’ motion sensors. Triggered through integration with the DSC alarm system, the lighting is switched to full intensity in the respective areas and the keypads are locked. Notifications are sent to the homeowner and the security staff.

Bespoke floor boxes have been provisioned at precise locations to facilitate multiple placement possibilities for Bang & Olufsen floor standing speakers with unintrusive cable management. Synergy Technologies coordinated with the interior designer and the manufacturer to identify the optimum placement respecting aesthetics and acoustics.

PROJECT Grosvenor Apartments

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Mosaic AV

This project is a Luxury 3-bedroom apartment located in central London. The brief was to provide a completely integrated home control system which was discreet and user friendly. The apartment was to be filled with expensive artwork, furniture, and sculptures, and the goal for Mosaic AV was to achieve a look that would fit in with the rest of the high-end finishes and to behave in a way that would accentuate them.

Basalte Deseo and Sentido keypads, along with Basalte Ellie touch screens, were chosen to bring the BMS control from KNX to the user, with simplistic and intuitive controls, whilst the Savant app and remotes were selected to control the 7.2 surround cinema and kitchen/ family space TV.

The cinema room features a Bowers & Wilkins setup of two subs, two loudspeakers, and a centre speaker behind a thin layer of speaker fabric in the joinery. Two rear Klipsch corner speakers are colour matched to the room décor and complete the audio setup, all used to bring to life the Samsung 8K 90" smart TV.

In the kitchen/family space, the request was to have a 65" TV on an articulating bracket that can be pulled out for viewing from the kitchen. Future Automations was the obvious port of call for such a bracket, and with a 1 metre reach, the chosen bracket is well engineered.

The entrance hallway features a bespoke crystal chandelier with DMX controls. Using a Basalte Ellie touchscreen, Mosiac AV provided controls for all functions of the chandelier, including a colour wheel for personalised selection.

Security Solutions for the Smart Home

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Woelf

This luxurious property of over 1,000 square meters needed a smart home automation system to help the technology-minded family of four live their life best at home. Woelf, a leading integrator of home automation systems, designed and integrated more than 15 different systems for this property.

As the integrator, Woelf chose KNX as the backbone of the home and Control4 for the home automation. This provided the client with an easy-to-use interface, along with 66 Basalte keypads installed throughout the property.

The property features 21 audio zones, with a separate amplifier for every two zones. To ensure that the video system could reach all sources and displays, even those located over 100 meters away, Woelf used a “Video over IP” system.

The 7.4.4 Dolby Atmos theatre was equipped with Wisdom Audio line source speakers and Sony laser projection.

Woelf also installed an IP-based alarm system, so that every touchscreen in the property could function as a security panel. The shade control system included both automatic and manual elements, operating 26 curtains. The goal of the automated control is to save energy, so when the alarm is turned on, all the curtains are automatically closed to reduce the energy needed to maintain the right temperature in the house.

With over 13 switches, 6 server racks, 18 access points, and more than 1 km of fiber connections, this was one of the most integrated homes Woelf has ever worked on.

The judges commented: “This is a very thorough set of plans and documentation. Clearly a lot of time and planning went into this project. An excellent example.”

PROJECT A Concert in the Cotswolds

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Homeplay

This project was a takeover job for Homeplay, who came in once a Lutron lighting system, CCTV and a network had been installed. With no decisions yet made on the AV set up, the team got to work.

For the pool area, Homeplay installed a Samsung Terrace TV, coupled with a Storm processor feeding an L-Acoustics sound system with 13 channels and eight subwoofers. There are another three zones of L-Acoustics audio on top of this, including a decking area with subwoofers hidden under the deck.

The client was adamant that they wanted a media room within a beautiful glass room. Despite the challenges this presented, Homeplay successfully installed a 5.1 Anthony Gallo system and 7,000 lumen laser projector with an interchangeable short throw lens and ARL screen, which the team integrated into the ceiling.

Despite not being keen on a control system, the client did appreciate that a video distribution system and control system would be necessary, given the size of the property and the limitations of Sky Q. The integrator used an IP based system and linked the two main switches in two different buildings together with fibre.

An Avigilon server and 23 CCTV cameras were hooked up to a remote monitoring system that is triggered by video analytics alarms and supported by audio challenge delivered via six IP horn speakers.

Even though the lighting control had been worked on by the previous integrator, Homeplay re- programmed the system to suit the needs of the client, and engraved all the keypads to provide a more customer friendly set up.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR BNC Technology

BNC Technology was set the performance objective of creating an immersive experience for the family utilising the existing room. The space needed to be comfortable, luxurious, and flexible enough to cater for the entire family — from the young child and a newborn baby to the parents and the granny — whilst keeping the technology hidden and the design subtle.

With the seating needing to accommodate different types of people, BNC Technology installed a row of cinema seating, a custom-made oversized couch — ideal for the 6’6” Dad — and bean bags for the kids.

Klipsch speakers and two SVS Inc 10” subwoofer were installed in a 7.1.4 surround sound Dolby Atmos set up. With no depth of space on the rear wall, BNC Technology had to install the subwoofers above floor level behind the acoustically transparent Adeo screen.

Needing to meet the brief of not having equipment on display, the screen had to be raised a little higher to accommodate an equipment cabinet below.

The integrator designed preset scenes on the Control4 Neeo remote, allowing for the system to be activated via a single button push on entry and exit.

With the family hosting intimate church gatherings, they required the space to be acoustically treated to reduce external sounds. The integrator opted for a 53db rated acoustic rated door.

The existing HVAC system had no fresh air intake, so BNC Technology installed a custom plenum box that was manufactured to accommodate the fresh air intake for the cinema from the bar area.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Finite Solutions

Finite Solutions wanted to create a system that would deliver an emotive connection and perform exceptionally when watching anything from action blockbusters to live concerts. The client’s brief also required the integrator to deliver a slick, comfortable interior design within a reasonable budget.

With the audio element being key to achieving this, the team specified Wisdom Insight speakers for the accuracy and speed of the planar magnetic drivers. Additionally, these speakers are less than 90mm deep, which was an important consideration given the very limited space behind the screen wall. Finite Solutions built its own custom infinite baffle subwoofers using the BH15T infinite baffle subwoofer drivers powered by Acurus amplification, with all phase control and bass management by the Trinnov. REW was used to model the room and assess the ideal position for the infinite baffle enclosure subwoofers.

Finite Solutions ensures sufficient headroom and designed a system that was capable of hitting reference levels of performance with SPL’s of 105dB +/- 3bD at the primary listening position.

On the visual side, the integrator opted to use the JVC NZ8 projector to deliver a performance objective of 135 Nits on the 3.5m Projecta 1.1 gain screen.

The ceiling height and design created a few challenges for the in-ceiling speaker positions, but these were overcome and the visual effect from the ceiling detail provides the sleek design the client was after. The front row seating is 1 degree above the ideal vertical viewing angle to ensure the rear row viewing angle isn’t interrupted.

Cinema Lusso has delivered my home cinema to a standard that I never knew was possible. Every aspect of dealing with them has been first class.

PROJECT The Expanse

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Cinema Lusso

Having purchased his forever home, the client contracted Cinema Lusso for the job and provided them with a brief to deliver an intelligently engineered AV design that would manage and minimise inevitable compromises.

The objective for the audio was to ensure the system could convey the Director’s original intent,. Cinema Lusso’s design is based on technical engineering principles to allow the system to deliver the correct measurable audio performance across the seating area.

A combination of subwoofer placement, seating location, passive acoustic treatment, and electroacoustic optimisation are all employed to reduce both seat to seat variation and inter frequency variation.

The client stated that much of the room usage will be after his son is asleep, so significant sound isolation from the rest of the property was required. Tactile transducers were added in each seat to provide the client a sense of bass energy at night-time if listening to the system at reduced levels.

With the client expecting to use the cinema in excess of 10 hours per week, the integrator selected a high lifetime laser projector to avoid luminance fluctuation between lamp changes. In order to provide image quality that is in line with the performance of a commercial cinema performance, a minimum reflected luminance of 14ftL was required post calibration.

Cinema Lusso designed a concept that draws on inspiration from the client’s favourite TV show, The Expanse, and has created a refined Sci-Fi space. Materials in a neutral grey pallet were used in the design to ensure room reflections are minimised, with no colour cast and to prevent black level clipping.

PROJECT Cinema by the Sea

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR New Wave AV

New Wave AV took on the responsibility for the build, AV, lighting, and finishes for this home cinema project. Meeting with the client, it became clear that the space would be used for movie viewing as well as gaming, and that the audio performance was a critical element of the room.

Due to the height of the room, there wasn’t enough space to build up 300mm for the rear seating and for the requested ceiling coffer. To overcome this, New Wave AV dug out the basement floor by 150mm for the front row and build up the rear seating on a 150mm platform.

With the client requesting a large screen than originally planned, New Wave AV managed to make sure it was still within the viewing angle range recommended by THX/SMPTE. The masking screen also helped with the perceived contrast ratio when watching non 2.4/2.35:1 content.

Procella was chosen for the speaker package and installed in a 9.1.4 configuration. Their form factor meant that all four walls had to be built out so that the speakers could be correctly positioned without any impact on the aesthetics of the room. This allowed the team to fabric wrap the room, fit slab absorption and diffusion, and create a shadow gap to light between the wall and the ceiling coffer.

To ensure the gaming box was ticked, New Wave AV installed a PS5, Xbox Series X, and a Gaming PC, with the consoles located in purpose build shelving to the side of the AV racks.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR The Big Picture

The primary objective from client was to deliver a system that features excellent sound and vision, with nothing in the room distracting from that. They wanted the largest screen possible and for the bass to make him feel like ‘he was being trampled by dinosaurs’. Although movies were the main priority, the client wanted to enjoy stereo music in the room.

The client wanted the very best sound for himself and freely admitted he had less regard for the family. The Big Picture originally looked a 7.2.4 set-up. However, findings in a ‘room simulation’ proved that four subs would be much flatter and more powerful between 30 to 60Hz where it really counts and providing bags more headroom. After fitting in an extra seat, the integrator was worried anyone in that seat would have been very close to surround left speaker channel, so suggested moving to 9.3.4 (decode) system with four subs on a 16-channel pre-processor.

Possibly the greatest technical challenge was getting a large enough screen on a wall with sloping ceilings either side, whilst keeping the image high enough that reclined feet did not interfere with viewing enjoyment. The team also had the added challenge of introducing dualformat masking for optimum 1.78:1 viewing. By building a custom screen, The Big Picture was able to achieve a little over standard for the viewing distance, that had already been dictated by best acoustics. The black velvet on the sloped ceiling acts as extra wide framing.

The cinema’s audio power amps sit on a sequential start PDU to mitigate high start-up in-rush currents.

A nice solution for a difficult room, lots of well detailed documentation, and nicely presented.

PROJECT Crazy Golf

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Homeplay

The room for this takeover project was an empty shell, but the clients — a sound and technology enthusiast and a talented interior designer — had a plan already in mind. The idea was for the large dog-leg shaped space to feature a golf simulator/media room at one end, a bar at the other, and a pool table in the middle.

Homeplay quickly realised that an L-Acoustic sound system was the way forward, and the client was blown away by the quality and power of the system when the integrator organised a demo for them. The cinema/golf simulator part of the studio features a 7.1.4 L-Acoustics sound system with Syva front speakers driven by a Storm processor. Having demonstrated the various drawbacks of sharing the same screen for golf and movies, the client agreed to a two projector design — a high brightness short throw projector for the golf simulator and a dedicated cinema projector for other media.

The main bar area utilises a pair of A15/KS21 medium throw speakers, X4i speakers, and a wall-mounted Dell ultrawide 49" monitor to work as nearfield monitors and PC speakers. Homeplay ran a feed from the video distribution system so that the screen can be used ‘half and half’ for TV and for the client’s Mac Mini.

Large windows meant that the team needed to install several Lutron blackout shades to ensure the correct light levels in the room. These shades include side channels that Homeplay built into the window frame for a fully integrated look.

PROJECT DJ House

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Smart Business SL

This 300m2 project in Madrid saw Smart Business SL install a media room that doubles as a DJ space in a 200-year-old apartment building. Working alongside an architect, builder, and interior designer, the integrator designed an AV system that neatly and discreetly fit into this small space and allow the client to follow his passion for DJing by hosting big parties.

A custom build cabinet was installed at one end of the room and was designed to house all the required equipment for a system that would deliver TV viewing, stereo audio, karaoke, and DJing.

A bespoke Future Automation PLH motor was installed to house a 55" LG OLED TV. Two Vancet TS700C twin motors were located on the front of the TV that would raise the two DJ decks and mixer. A made to measure rack was fitted into the lower right section of the cabinet. Four Artcoustic Sound fire 6 speakers provide the L and R channels, two soundbars as the centre channel, and two Monitor Audio CW-10 subwoofers were installed.

For a DJing set up, two Pioneer decks and a mixer were placed along with four Shure SM58 karaoke microphones, and a London 128 signal processor which corrects and manages all input and output signals.

Smart Business SL installed a Crestron system which controls the doorbell. If there is a knock at the door after 1am, the system automatically lowers the audio to a level permitted by law.

Through the control system, the user has the option of putting the system in automatic mode, which purifies the air in the home in one hour, or in “party” mode, in which air purification is focussed on the living room with flow rates of air that according to the manufacturer changes the air in 15 minutes.

DLF — The Camellias is a creative blend of urban infrastructure and wholesome living and includes nine community towers and a futuristic hub of entertainment and holistic well-being, including an all-exclusive club house. MACBEE was handpicked to customise and integrate numerous aspects of the entire blueprint, including cinema design, AV distribution, integration control, intercommunication systems, lighting ambience, as well as networking solutions across the site.

The audio distribution comprises customised media servers for each of the nine zones in the club house and the nine zones in the residence lobbies. 55 display screens and TVs and 16 video sources are included across the site. A customised user-friendly GUI is made up of 200 custom pages to account for all possible permutations and combinations in this colossal project.

The MACBEE team created lighting concepts to reflect the five main energy zones of the clubhouse. The project includes over 1,000 circuits and over 2,000 lighting fixtures, with a mix of direct lighting, indirect lighting, designer chandeliers, and more. Specially designed underwater RGB fiber optics are placed in the outdoor water area for buoyancy and radiance. Underwater lighting in the outdoor pool provides energetic dynamics.

The curtains and blinds are timed to open and close based on an astronomical clock, which efficiently takes into account the movement of the sun per day as well as per season, while the HVAC control via Backnet is timed as well as temperature controlled.

The gym includes a customised video wall with eight screens to make a landscape scenario in front of the exercise cycles with natural scenes to offer the feeling of being in the midst of nature.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Lifestyle Technologies Ltd

With this project consisting of 172 apartments, Lifestyle Technologies Ltd had to design and install a system that would meet the different requirements, opinions, and budgets future owners. With this in mind, the team focussed on providing a simple, yet high-quality system with unrivalled reliability and is capable of future upgrades. The installed system focusses on audio distribution, integration control, and lighting control.

Each apartment features a Sonos audio system. Having a single zone system with built-in streaming services was a very cost effective and practical audio solution for this size of development.

It is simple to use and uses an almost universally accepted user interface, which is very important when different owners with different tastes and preferences needs to be able to operate it. Sonos can be controlled via the wall touch panel and an app on both iOS and Android.

The integrator programmed two separate lighting scenarios, one for daytime and another for night-time. The owners simply select the scenario they want to activate on the keypads, touch panel, or smartphone, and a different scenario is recalled depending on the time. Motorised curtain provisions have been provided, so that if the new owner decides to upgrade the system, they can easily do so.

Lifestyle Technologies Ltd provided a Crestron Home system with a 7-inch wall touch panel for each apartment. Crestron Home was chosen due to its simplicity, clean look, and consistency on both the touch panel and mobile devices.

The Synergy Townhouse is a 502 sq. m. experiential facility set in a standalone three floor property. Synergy Technologies’ objective was to setup an experience centre from the ground up that would render its claim, “Extraordinary Solutions for Exceptional Spaces,” and showcase its growing portfolio of solutions and brands.

The team wanted to be able to highlight performance, customer experience, flexibility, compatibility and integration, and usability. This showroom presents an epitome of design, quality, innovation, craftsmanship, and longevity with the brands that define their respective industries.

The Minotti Lounge delivers an enveloping experience defined by refined luxury interwoven with avant-garde technology, while the Poltrona Frau Lounge offers a tactile experience of timeless design and compelling performance. Cutting-edge design and innovation is showcased in the Technogym wellness studio. An openplan Penthouse boasts a lifestyle defining apartment experience, and the home cinema delivers an immersive experience achieved though attention to detail in every aspect of performance and environment.

The Personal Study and Wellness space features Poliform furniture, Technogym cardio equipment, Bowers & Wilkins CI-600 series RD, reduced depth in-ceiling speakers, and Flos in-ceiling lighting, accommodated in a restricted false ceiling space of only 80mm.

The Poliform Kitchen showcases Bowers & Wilkins inceiling speakers, an iGuzzini miniaturized track-lighting system, a Lutron SeeTouch table-top keypad, a Control4 Neeo hand-held touchscreen remote control, Lutron Sivoia QS Shades, and aLutron Alena Curtain Track.

Lutron HomeWorks lighting is installed throughout the property, exhibiting a comprehensive collection of wall controls and finishes that complement each space and demonstrate a range of control technologies.

Potters Home Digital designed the showroom to broaden the offering it has for inside the home and offer the same level of service to our external spaces. With a target audience of high-net-worth individuals, the team wanted to create an immersive experience that combines smart technology, award-winning garden design, and meticulous craftsmanship to create an atmosphere and experience like no other.

This showroom allows the company to showcase AV, lighting, CCTV, automation, control, and outdoor Wi-Fi. There are 9 audio zones, featuring the Sonance range of Patio Series, Garden Series, Rock Speakers, Omni’s, and Mariners, and James Loudspeaker solutions, including the Eaves Wedge speaker and On-Wall series set into a stone bench.

The main central space provides an immersive 7.1 outdoor cinema, where technology is hidden but performance is not compromised. The bass is produced by a marine grade 12" Dual Marine PowerPipe Subwoofer, which was installed into a specially created segment of the flower bed. A Samsung Terrace 75" Waterproof TV is installed into a recess in a newly constructed wall, where the LCR Soundbar sits below. Sitting in front of the television are a pair of custom metal decorative screens, fixed to a Future Automation Moving Door Mechanism. This hides the television from view when not in use, while further protecting the television from the elements.

DALI 8 tuneable white luminaires are installed in the Garden Office to allow the integrator to implement Circadian rhythm programming, maintaining physical, mental, and behavioural changes that follow the 24hour cycle.

PROJECT The Blue Wave

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR AVTCS

AVTCS designed a luxury media lounge, called The Blue Wave, to showcase how AV can blend in with the aesthetics, and how lighting can make clients feel like they are cruising in a royal limousine. Targeted towards those customers who want to transform their living space into a media lounge that will deliver an immersive experience, this showroom is based on the most up to date client preferences.

The integrator wanted the audio to be on display rather than hidden away, so selected Genelec SAM-Speakers to provide a cinematic experience. All the 3 immersive audio formats (Dolby Atmos, DTS X, Auro 3D) are catered for in this 9.2.4 room, with flawless switching between the formats using a Marantz AV 8805 processor. The team planned for a 100" ALR screen with UST projector which replicates conventional 65"/ 77" OLED in living spaces. The projector is camouflaged inside the customised credenza of the room acoustics, leaving the face of the projector visible to ensure proper ventilation and to enhance aesthetics.

The lighting is automated to suit various applications and moods, including Music, Movies, Discussion mode, and Game mode. Linear Tron lighting is blended within the aesthetics, while fabric gripper grooves provide a unique futuristic feel to the space. KNX Lighting control system is integrated with RTI for AV and the latest concepts of electroluminescence, fibre optic, and stretch ceiling lights are installed without the need of dimming.

Five customised seats with dual motorised design and neck rest comfortably accommodates five people in the lounge.

PROJECT The Blackroom

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Blackroom

The main objective of building the Blackroom demo space was to create a place where Blackroom could show what a true high-performance home cinema is all about — a place where clients can feel totally immersed in perfect sound and picture and experience the true magic of cinema.

The showroom is built within Blackroom’s office space which is located on a separate floor of a loft-styled mansion and has a separate entrance. The demo room is equipped with Dolby Atmos 9.1.6 system, with four subwoofers, and a whole wall-sized 160"-wide screen with 1,78:1 aspect ratio. Two top-of-the-line JVC projectors and an equipment rack are placed in an adjacent technical room that is separated from the main theatre in the back of the room. There’s also an isolating power transformer and a smart home and electric panel located in the technical room.

The showroom was designed to fit an Alcons Audio system — something really new in terms of home cinema sound quality. It was also designed to include only A-brands hardware and equipment, including Trinnov, JVC, Stewart Filmscreen, and Lutron.

The demo theater room has an open-minded cyberpunklike technical design where you can see all the acoustical treatment and the speakers. The mood is set mainly by RGB LEDs and spot fixtures that provide indirect perimeter and ceiling soffit lighting.

Both projectors are set on the triplex glass shelf, making them visible for the customer. The room features one row of seats with three motorised recliner chairs, and a second optional row using mobile bar chairs when needed.

The primary objective for BNC Technology’s showroom was to create an asset for the business to ensure longevity in the industry, elevate them to the next level, and differentiate themselves from competitors. Designed for the technology to be hidden but for the customer to be able to experience it, the facility is targeted at extremely high net worth individuals.

Each space is created to tell a different story and open the customer’s mind to the possibilities of what can be achieved in their home. Flexibility was key as BNC Technology wants to be able to upgrade the technology when new ones became available.

On arriving and deactivating the alarm, the showroom comes to life — the roller shutters and blinds open, the light activate, client music begins playing, and the air conditioning starts up. The entrance showcases distributed audio via Amina speakers and controlled from a Control4 interface, which operates the lighting, HVAC, audio, and shades.

The showroom features a 7.1.2 Gold Cinema, which was installed as a turnkey offering and shows customers that you don’t have to have a traditional cinema. The integrator used different shades and materials to highlight the possibilities of a space. The team also hid all the speakers, which helps the customer focus on the solution and not the products.

BNC Technology installed a garden to demonstrate the power of outdoor performance audio. The workshop is where all projects are built — with space to programme and test every system. This space allows customer to witness progress of their system.

The judges commented: “This is a beautiful showroom and demonstrates a commitment to excellence. I can see as being a real asset to the business.”
