Excellence in Business | Ryelec Automation & Energy

In 2011, Tom Ryan embarked on a journey, starting as a sole trader under the name Ryan Electrix, offering traditional electrical services. His business grew steadily, leading to the restructuring of the company in 2017 as ‘Ryelec Pty Ltd’. Tom’s vision was to pivot towards automation, an emerging niche in the market. This transition required intensive training, with Tom and his employees gaining expertise in automation. This strategic shift initially presented challenges as early automation projects were relatively small. It wasn’t until the past 18 months that Ryelec achieved ‘proof of concept’ and honed its focus on high-end automation systems such as C-BUS, KNX, Savant, and Basalte. This specialisation sparked significant growth, driven by repeat customers and wordof-mouth referrals, particularly from high-end residential construction firms.

This included the delegation of responsibilities to a growing team, the acquisition of SKE Electric in April 2023, and the establishment of a centralised factory and showroom in Heathcote, NSW. Ryelec specialises in luxury smart home systems, providing a seamless and cohesive experience, from electrical installations to multi-room audio, home cinema, solar panels, security, and advanced home automation. They offer a one-stop solution that streamlines project management, saving time and money for clients.

CEDIA Lifetime Achievement Award | Steve Moore

Steve Moore decided against a career in architecture to launch a business selling high-end AV to musicloving homeowners nearly 40 years ago. He then left to set up SMC in 1993 and, inspired by a visit to CEDIA Expo that year, helped to launch CEDIA in the UK, running it alongside his own company from his London dining room, subsequently teaching at numerous CEDIA events worldwide. SMC, like the industry in general, has grown enormously since then, and Moore has consulted for a wide variety of technology businesses, large and small, along the way. With strong successors running SMC, Moore is now semi-retired, and continues to support others operating in the connected home space.

12

“The best thing about this industry is all the wonderful people I’ve met and worked with over the years,” said Moore. “A huge number of individuals have selflessly provided so much of their time and expertise (which I’ve benefited from as much as others) and I’m therefore surprised, flattered, and humbled to have been recognized. It’s always inspiring to see the energy and enthusiasm of newcomers to this world, and I’m embarrassingly proud to have seen my own company grow to the point where the children of early employees are now key members of staff themselves. Thank you to CEDIA and all those who have put up with me all this time – especially my longsuffering partners and my own fantastic children and stepchildren.”

PROJECT

Coastal Retreat TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Argus Technologies In the picturesque landscapes of a hilly, coastal, and bush-fire zone, Argus Technologies has achieved a remarkable smart home project, demonstrating the endless possibilities of smart home automation in transforming our living spaces. Located far from the bustling city, the remote property presented a unique challenge. However, with the increasing demand for seamless connectivity and remote access, the homeowner required full control and visibility over the property. The objective was clear: to create a home that served as both a personal retreat and a captivating Airbnb rental, offering an unforgettable experience to guests. Argus Technologies rose to the occasion by crafting a cuttingedge smart home that seamlessly shifted between its different roles. The heart of this marvel lies in the integrated lighting system, which sets the perfect ambiance and ensures energy efficiency. The property’s carport area itself becomes an artistic canvas, adorned with feature lighting, captivating passers-by and adding enchantment to the township below. Entertainment and comfort are effortlessly woven into the fabric of the smart home with a distributed audio system and clever use of ceiling-lift solutions, revealing surrounding bushland and ocean views. Argus Technologies built a robust network to support the home’s automation backbone and enable online streaming services. The interplay of technology and nature reached a harmonious crescendo with automatic play of bird and nature sounds, adding tranquillity to daily life. Security was of utmost concern, and Argus Technologies crafted an all-encompassing security solution, including an integrated alarm system, access control, CCTV surveillance, and an intercom system connected to mobile devices. In the spirit of sustainability, Argus Technologies integrated HVAC systems and comfort controls seamlessly, transforming the retreat into an eco-friendly sanctuary. Despite challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the team at Argus Technologies showed adaptability and perseverance, fulfilling their client’s aspirations. This project celebrates the triumph of technology, creativity, and human ingenuity, proving that smart homes enhance our daily lives, connecting us to nature and the world like never before. 17

PROJECT

Retrofit Luxury TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Liquid Automation In Auckland, New Zealand, a luxurious smart home, transformed by Liquid Automation, epitomises the pinnacle of upscale living. The project began in 2021 and was commissioned by a prominent businessman who actively participated in shaping his dream residence. The primary goal was to seamlessly relocate and refit existing systems while accommodating the client’s uninterrupted use of the house during renovations. Central to the smart home is the rack housing all audio-visual equipment, meticulously connected to various areas through minimal cabling, using high-end components for reliability and optimal user experience. Liquid Automation’s focus on a simplistic end-user experience resulted in a seamless integration of systems. For instance, setting the main alarm triggers specific lighting changes depending on day or night, enhancing security and energy efficiency. Remarkably, Liquid Automation overcame the challenge of starting without drawings or documentation and meticulously developed comprehensive CAD drawings and cable schedules. The system’s attention to detail extended down to the component level, allowing future upgrades and enhancements with ease. The smart home boasts an intercom system that activates Crestron touch panels when the doorbell rings, displaying the intercom camera view, providing added security and convenience. Additionally, the media room features a unique ‘Video Wall Artwork Mode’, enabling the screen to display artwork when not in use, personalising the user experience. Having previously worked on a luxury residence for the same client, Liquid Automation was contracted to complete this renovation project in Takapuna, Auckland, crafting new system drawings and cable schedules despite the lack of documentation from the original installation. Relocating and rebuilding the main equipment rack proved challenging, requiring meticulous coordination with builders to ensure uninterrupted operations. Liquid Automation’s skilled technicians managed the process efficiently, resulting in a tidy and effective AV rack rebuild. Throughout the installation, Liquid Automation’s expertise facilitated a smooth and cost-effective process. The client’s involvement during commissioning led to a highly satisfied customer, boasting a discreet, reliable, and intuitive home automation system. 21

RP22

IMMERSIVE AUDIO DESIGN RECOMMENDED PRACTICE

The new recommended practice for immersive audio design (RP22) redefines how we quantify system performance. This is the first time that system performance metrics are defined by four distinct levels, instead of vague “good, better, best" packages or “low, middle, high" cost models.

ENDORSED BY INDUSTRY LEADING BRANDS

And the new definitions aren’t just for integrators’ benefit... With RP22, manufacturers know their products are functioning as intended; customers understand the breadth of what they are paying for. Having clearly defined levels not only holds integrators accountable, it also elevates our industry to the highest professional standard.

Greenhills Beach TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Kayder Introducing Greenhills Beach: a stunning ‘forever’ home designed for a family of four, showcasing the perfect blend of luxury, functionality, and cutting-edge technology. Kayder, a leading home automation integrator, took on the challenge of creating an exceptional living space with a simple-to-use and reliable smart home system. Spread across three blocks of land, the Greenhills Beach residence offers lavish amenities like an underground basketball court, tennis court, pool, yoga studio, and gymnasium. The challenge was to seamlessly integrate state-of-the-art smart home technology without compromising the elegant aesthetics. Kayder proposed an end-to-end Crestron smart home system, eliminating the need to integrate with multiple manufacturers. Small aperture speakers were chosen to merge seamlessly with the design, offering high-quality sound throughout the property. For outdoor entertainment, Crestron’s latest landscape speakers and subwoofers were installed. The basketball court features a powerful audio solution with Martin Audio CDD12 speakers and SX212 subwoofers, powered by Q-SYS DSP and network amplifiers. A Panasonic 16,000-lumen projector dominates the court, also serving as a scoreboard with a custom-made app. The Crestron NVX video over IP system delivers 4K HDR to all TVs and the projector, distributing video sources and camera feeds flawlessly. A PTZ camera on the roof provides live views of surf breaks in Cronulla accessible from any TV. The gymnasium features a Zoom soundbar for personal training and video conferencing integration. Clever lighting control adjusts automatically based on the time of day, and motorized curtains and blinds synchronise with the security system. Climate control becomes effortless with the Crestron system, monitoring the entire house’s temperature levels. Finger scanners at entry points activate ‘welcome’ lighting scenes and deactivate alarms upon entry. When away, the sophisticated away mode turns off all systems, while shades close and random schedules simulate presence. Home mode reactivates schedules and welcoming scenes. A car license plate reader grants automatic access to the garage. Initially hesitant, the clients were won over by Kayder’s comprehensive Crestron system, providing them with a stressfree living experience. The Greenhills Beach project exemplifies how modern technology can transform homes into smart, intuitive, and luxurious spaces, with endless possibilities for the future of smart homes. 37

McCormick Concepts Seeking a captivating escape for their loved ones, a homeowner approached McCormick Concepts in search of a premium cinema experience infused with captivating aesthetics. Their primary goal was to create a unique and elegant cinema room that would become a cherished family retreat. With a focus on fulfilling the family’s entertainment needs, McCormick Concepts carefully planned the seating arrangement, accommodating two rows of comfortable cinema chairs for up to eight people, with an additional bar area that could serve as a third row for larger gatherings. To bring the client’s vision to life, the design incorporated special feature lighting with automated controls to create a captivating ambiance and showcase various scenes. Timber veneer finishes were used throughout the interior, adding sophistication and warmth to the space. Distinctive columns with integrated light features were introduced to visually break up the walls, while the stage at the front seamlessly blended with the large projector screen, creating an immersive cinematic experience. Fabric panels adorned the walls, with recessed aluminium strips providing subtle yet captivating details. The client’s insistence on superior audio quality led to the incorporation of warm and detailed sound from the front speakers, along with impactful surround sound and Dolby Atmos capabilities. McCormick Concepts thoughtfully integrated the client’s existing ‘pre-loved’ hardware, such as a power amplifier, into the speaker selection for the main house. Beyond the pursuit of high-quality sound, noise control was a top priority. McCormick Concepts implemented a resilient mount system to isolate the internal walls and ceiling from the house’s frame. Additional measures, including engineered flooring, heavy-duty commercial underlay, and plush carpet, minimised sound transmission and ensured a peaceful environment for family members resting in the adjacent rooms. The result was an exceptional cinema room that surpassed the ordinary, becoming a tasteful and luxurious retreat within the family’s home. McCormick Concepts’ meticulous attention to detail in lighting, timber veneer finishes, columns, and stage design, combined with their focus on audio performance and sound isolation, created a truly remarkable space for the family to enjoy their treasured moments together. 41

Curved High-End Cinema TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Sentiment HiFi As a leader in cinema design, Sentiment HiFi eagerly embraced the task of building an exceptional home theatre that surpassed the most stringent standards. The team catered to the discerning tastes of a passionate audiophile, infusing their craftsmanship into a theatre that captivated both the visual and auditory senses. To ensure an immersive auditory experience, the theatre adopted a channel configuration of 11.5.6.3, incorporating three high-channel screen speakers and rear surround channel high speakers. This setup enabled support for the complete range of 3D audio channels available. The renowned Christie Vive Audio, equipped with professional band tweeters, was selected as the speaker system. A unique vision of exposed speakers inspired an innovative design with wavy curved surfaces. The Christie Vive Audio’s curved array loudspeakers seamlessly blended with the undulating waves of acoustic decoration, creating a visually stunning curvilinear aesthetic that harmonised with the sound waves. Acoustic treatment received meticulous attention, with elastic shock-absorbing walls on all five surfaces, including the ceiling, effectively reducing excess low-frequency standing waves. The concrete walls were enhanced with a specialised acoustic insulation layer. 3D printing technology produced wooden panels in a wavy curved form, strategically placed at varying heights and curvatures to optimise sound reflection and diffusion. The theatre’s acoustic structure featured a three-layer design, using 3D printed acoustic wood grids wrapped in dark acoustic material. This design allowed unrestricted speaker performance while isolating internal sounds from external interference. A thick, sound-absorbing carpet further minimised unwanted floor reflections. Integrating different loudspeaker brands, AUREA and Paradigm’s subwoofers, posed an intriguing challenge. The owner’s desire for powerful low frequencies with fast bass tones, along with the Christie Vive Audio system, demanded skilful fine-tuning through DSP adjustments. The technicians excelled, achieving a balanced and harmonious state of sound, impressing the audiophile owner. Overall, Sentiment HiFi’s brilliance shone through its premium home theatre design, exceeding the audiophile owner’s expectations. 45

Embracing the client’s desire for an extraordinary cinema, Wavetrain Cinemas presented a unique design concept inspired by gothic-style windows, featuring a church cloister entrance to the basement cinema, accentuating materials, textures, and sheen. Attention to detail extended to the HVAC system and projector ventilation, ensuring a silent and efficient cooling solution. The control room featured four air feeds for ventilation and fresh air intake, with a cleverly designed hush box concealing the projector to minimise noise and light reflections.

Despite challenges posed by a repetitive ceiling structure, Wavetrain Cinemas meticulously positioned the ceiling speakers for optimal audio orientation, enhancing both aesthetics and viewing experience. Initial scepticism surrounding the aged brass and gold ceiling was overcome by careful consideration of reflective qualities and colour palettes, resulting in a complementary addition to the overall design without compromising the screen’s viewing experience. The Cloister stands as a testament to Wavetrain Cinemas’ success in delivering an immersive cinematic escape that surpasses industry standards and meets client expectations. Almost Perfect Home Cinema TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Liquid Automation In the bustling city of Auckland, New Zealand, a local businessman with a deep passion for cinema set his sights on creating an “Almost Perfect Home Cinema”. Seeking the expertise of Liquid Automation, a renowned local integrator, the client embarked on a journey to transform a child’s playroom area into a state-of-the-art home theatre that would rival commercial cinemas. To ensure the ultimate end-user experience, the focus was on incorporating high-end, reliable components with excellent product support. The client, well-versed in home theatre equipment, researched detailed specifications and manufacturer information for the selected components. Liquid Automation meticulously assembled a technology package to satisfy the client’s cinephile enthusiasm. The team installed various cinema control systems, including iPads and a hard-button remote from Crestron, allowing seamless control and potential integration with other areas of the home. Creating an unforgettable cinematic ambiance required careful lighting control and room design. Liquid Automation added a custom modular star ceiling for a touch of luxury and strategically placed acoustic treatments to optimise sound quality and immerse the viewer in the experience. The room’s original layout presented challenges, with its annex location and double-height ceilings, adjoining an open-plan family, kitchen, dining, and lounge area. To address the issue of high reverb time, the team focused on minimising existing insulation and controlling light intrusion while maximising acoustic isolation. To achieve these acoustic goals, the builder took significant steps, including blocking up windows with blockwork, replacing existing studs with concrete core steel structural panels, and adding insulated stud work with noise-proofing Green Glue and double gib boards. The project faced an unexpected hurdle — the global pandemic — which disrupted the availability of building materials, necessitating revisions and adjustments in the design elements, such as stud timber and gib board thickness and absorption capabilities. Despite these challenges, the collaborative efforts of the client, Liquid Automation, and the builder resulted in the successful creation of the ‘Almost Perfect Home Cinema’. 55

Zene Private Theater Zene Private Theater faced a unique challenge when tasked with creating a perfect private cinema experience for an apartmentdwelling customer in Beijing. The client wanted to enjoy immersive movie nights without disturbing neighbours. Zene’s ingenious solution involved building a soundproof room-withina-room, detaching new cinema walls from the existing ones to minimise noise transmission. Careful construction and a ‘floating’ floor design further enhanced sound isolation. Despite limited space, Zene achieved remarkable sound isolation, allowing the client to watch movies without disturbing neighbours. For acoustic treatment, Zene used industry-leading sound panels from Quest Interiors and Arithmetic Design. Customising the panels to fit the unique room shapes, they provided excellent diffusion, making the room feel larger. The client desired a stunning lake view from the cinema but maintaining audio and picture quality was a challenge. Zene proposed a soundproof glass sliding door for the rear wall. To address audio and sunlight issues, they installed double electric tracks and heavy velvet curtains, preserving the cinema’s audiovisual experience. To expand the client’s streaming options, Zene set up a dedicated server in the US, allowing access to Netflix and other services via a special VPN. This complex network setup showcased Zene’s expertise in overcoming challenges. Ultimately, Zene Private Theater successfully crafted a soundproof cinematic oasis. The room-within-a-room design, combined with acoustic panels and the innovative glass door solution, ensured a captivating audio experience with a breathtaking lake view. Spearheading this transformation is this innovative smart home project by eXperience ONE, aiming to create an inclusive and empowering living space for individuals with disabilities. This project embraced the challenge of meeting and surpassing the rigorous benchmarks set by CEDIA’s Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) Design Standard response. As the first SDA endeavour in Australia seeking CEDIA member certification, it set a new standard for smart homes in the SDA sector under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). At the core of the smart home is the seamless integration of technology to enhance wellness and safety. The Clipsal C-Bus lighting control system enables convenient and efficient adjustments, positively impacting residents’ health and mood. Complemented by an emergency call system that escalates to carers’ mobile phones, the home ensures a secure living environment. The integration of cutting-edge technology with the base building CCTV system and access control enhances security and visibility, providing peace of mind. Empowering independence is a central commitment, with Alexa voice control and air conditioning management enabling residents to control their living environment autonomously. The system is designed to accommodate future access methods, reflecting a deep understanding of evolving needs. The project faced challenges with retrofitting in an occupied building, requiring meticulous planning and collaboration with on-site carers. Despite the hurdles, the outcome reflects the team’s resilience and dedication to accessible living. This smart home project stands as a testament to the profound impact of technology on the lives of people living with disabilities, offering hope and inspiration.
