Being a large home surrounded on two sides by a busy waterway, security was of the utmost importance to these clients.

The property is beautiful and the technology is well integrated into the decoration. Nice design and selection of solutions at a reasonable budget. 8

Monaco TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Bridger Automation Pty Ltd Bridger Automation came into this project on the Gold Coast, Queensland a bit later than they would have preferred, that is after construction was already underway, and an electrician had already been hired. Still, they were able to pull together a proposal that included audio, video, security, and lighting control built around the RTI Automation control system. These clients would have been sold on this proposal alone, but Bridger Automation’s reputation and previous installations further confirmed their decision. The team was then able to get to work on creating 11 independently controlled AV zones in the home, including eight video zones and three audio-only zones. This system allows for seamless integration between audio zones, and eliminates delays between them. For instance, the living, kitchen, and alfresco areas can all be set to the same source, allowing the client to move between them without experiencing any noticeable audio delay. The volume in each zone can be controlled individually or simultaneously using master volume controls. These clients also requested some tight security, being that their home was surrounded on two sides by a busy waterway. Bridger Automation installed an alarm system, access control, video IP intercom and CCTV cameras throughout the residence and grounds. These careful steps added peace of mind for the clients who could now monitor and control all aspects of their property right from their smartphone, whether at home or away. CEDIA’s judges commented that this home features “a nice design and selection of solutions at a reasonable budget.” 9

Cleland TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Bridger Automation Pty Ltd Bridger Automation says the performance objective for the Cleland project was to deliver a robust, reliable and intuitive system that was simple and modern yet powerful. To achieve that, all of the home’s fundamental functions had to integrate into a single user interface that anyone could use. The clients also opted for less technology than was originally planned in favour of even more simplicity. The team chose a RTI XP-6S Control Processor to power the user interface so the homeowners could easily control lighting, blinds, curtains, windows, fans, and audio and video zones from a tablet or through voice control. Three video sources are shared across three video zones with a fourth provisional zone in the master bedroom. A RTI AD-8x Audio Distribution System integrates seamlessly with the RTI control system, and gives the homeowners the ability to switch, amplify, and distribute audio. In addition to simplicity, lighting was also high on these clients’ priority list. The thoughtful lighting elements add a sophisticated look to the home, and the clients have control over all of it at their fingertips—the blinds, curtains, windows, fans, fireplace, and pool lights. Through close collaboration with the architect and client, Bridger Automation came up with carefully curated lighting scenes based off of their schedule. In addition to the typical daytime and evening scenes, the team also put together a panic scene to act as an additional layer of security. That is, in addition to a tight security bundle of PIR sensors, a B2B alarm, cameras with Internetenabled NVR, and more. While the Cleland home still has the potential to expand its functionality, as Bridger Automation proves, sometimes less is more. 13

Wired by MJD TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Wired by MJD During Wired By MJD’s initial meeting with the owners of this colourful Australian home, they posed the question “what do we need that we don’t already have?” Given that most of the equipment that Wired By MJD would need had already been installed several years prior, the answer was a full-on upgrade and more uniformity between systems. The objective was then to retrofit this technology into a large heritage listed property, work with the already established and working subsystems that were in place to create a single control system for the multiple subsystems, and do it all while the homeowners continued to live and work inside the home. Wired By MJD also had to address the clients’ hesitancy about adapting to the technology too quickly and having a fully autonomous system. Upon their request, all the automation required user interaction, with the exception of the outdoor heaters which have been programmed to turn off automatically after three hours of use. The client also specifically requested a higher-level security system. Wired By MJD chose secure LAN cabling to create an extra level of protection that would meet the clients’ needs. For the door and front gate, sliders are used on the integration interface to ensure access is always intentional and not accidental.

Upon the clients’ request, all the automation required user interaction.

The judges applauded Wired By MJD’s ability to offer solutions, saying “It’s always difficult to deal with legacy systems such as this one. Despite the many challenges this project presented, the integrator addressed them in a sensible way.” 17

The Masters Enclave TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Bridger Automation Pty Ltd This project marked the third time these clients called upon the work of Bridger Automation for a whole home solution. Having that history allowed Bridger Automation to put together a proposal that fit their exact needs, and was comprehensive in terms of control, aesthetics, and functionality. At the heart of this installation is an RTI XP8v processor, which is used as the primary control system for lighting, blinds, curtains, louvres, fans, fireplaces, and AV systems. Bridger Automation says the moods the house evokes through lighting, audio, video, and automation were ultimately what made the project so rewarding. The lighting design, for example, was subtly and strategically placed throughout the home to offer a warm ambience at night. The clients also wanted their home to smoothly transition from day to night around a natural, sunset time clock. So, each evening, a scene is triggered one hour before sunset which turns selected lighting groups on including all exterior lights and curtains closed. During a second scene, all lighting circuits are slowly shut off so that only the landscape lights remain on during the night. Similarly in the morning, the sun shines through the large windows on the east and north sides of the building. Two hours after dawn breaks, the motorised window shutters are raised to let sunlight flood the area without the harsh glare of the early morning sun. For privacy at night, motorised curtains and shades were introduced, especially since the house backs onto a golf course that lights up every night. Because these scenes run on a sunset/sunrise clock, the clients never need to worry about adjusting them with the change of seasons. 21

Luxury Lodge – New Zealand TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Liquid Automation Ltd Set amid pine trees and the thermal landscape of the central North Island plateau, is this architecturally designed lodge adjoining a private international golf course in Wairakei, near Taupo, New Zealand. Liquid Automation says the homeowner knew what he wanted from the very beginning: a Crestron backbone for the AV system, Crestron lighting and a reliable access control system. The client specified that all AV equipment and integrated appliances be discrete or hidden, and where visible should complement the home’s stylish, modern décor. The Crestron DM video solution forms the core of the video distribution providing a high-performance transport for 4K60 4:4:4 video. On the audio side, the Crestron Sonnex audio distribution system delivers high-output audiophile sound quality to every room with reduced cabling, low power consumption, and advanced DSP, all within an integrator-friendly setup.

The Crestron lighting system features optimised functions, such as cycle dim via touch panel button pushes which match those on the client’s iPad. When selecting entertainment, the client is presented with a page that shows the available sources to choose from and what source is controlled in which area if it is already in use. Access control is achieved under the alarm page allowing for doors or gates to be held unlocked, locked, or open. “In the end,” says Liquid Automation, “we had a satisfied customer with a discrete, reliable, and intuitive automation system.” 25

Boutique AV From initial concept to finishing touches, this project was the ultimate realisation of their client’s dream. In true partnership, Boutique AV embarked on the meticulous & emotional process, demanding months of synergised communication. Spurred on by the love of their large family & friends, this larger-than-life couple yearned for a space where everyone could come together under one roof. The clients prioritised five main entertaining spaces: the family & dining room, BBQ & deck, rumpus/bar, outdoor living, and theatre room. Each space required its own specific features to the AV, lighting, and climate requirements. With the number of guests they regularly host, the clients also wished to engage with everyone, even while on opposite ends of the house. Boutique AV designed an elaborate integrated home that integrates and automates all lighting, blinds, HVAC, AV and unique creations like the digital art wall. The whole house can be controlled through Siri voice commands, and a completely intuitive floorplan user interface bespoke to the client’s user navigation and visual layout request. In addition, scene commands like the ‘Entertaining’ scene can allow the client to run a highly complex request (with more than 50 commands) at the ease of a single button press or voice request. Walking in and out of this home leads you through a stunning hallway with a digital art wall feature that allows complete dynamic creative freedom. This visual masterpiece elicits an emotional response, revealing the narrative of the customer’s family history. The project happened to coincide with the onset of COVID-19 from April 2020.

A really impressive project both in terms of scope, documentation, integration and the challenges of COVID.

PROJECT

Bayside TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Argus Technologies Having engaged Argus Technologies six years earlier for their first home, these clients were keen to bring the automated lifestyle to their new suburban home. The brief? To replicate the experience of full home lighting control, AV distribution and security, and combine it with the latest features and upgrades the smart home industry currently has to offer. On the lighting side, collaborating with the clients’ interior designer and bespoke lighting supplier was paramount, especially with the customisations that were needed. Argus Technologies ended up calling in their own supplier to design and manufacture a custom recessed lighting solution for the feature timber ceiling of the kitchen and living space. With light fittings requiring a combination of either switched, phasedimming, DSI, 0-10V or DMX control, a whole-home 141-circuit C-Bus lighting system was installed. Central to the home is the automation of AV equipment by Control4; it allows one-press start-up and shutdown of all AV services, and the switching of multiple Foxtel sources to all televisions and TV soundbars. The homeowners had a specific request for an improved Spotify experience—one beyond the capabilities of Spotify Connect. For that reason, the team chose Sonos as the home’s distributed audio system. While this project was typical of the whole home automation systems the team delivers, the biggest challenge came in the way of COVID-19.

Collaborating with the clients’ interior designer and bespoke lighting supplier was paramount.

The project happened to coincide with the onset of COVID-19 from April 2020, and required Argus Technologies to continually adjust their timeline and communication with the client as COVID lockdowns and site restrictions severely impacted the wiring and installation stages. The team remarked that the completion of this project was “truly a 2020 highlight in what had otherwise been a difficult and often dismal year”. 33

Private Golf Course Residence – New Zealand TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Liquid Automation Ltd Set amid pine trees and a coastal beach landscape north of Auckland, New Zealand lies this new build home adjoining a private international golf course. The owner called in Liquid Automation with a specific request for Crestron to serve as the backbone of the home’s AV system, CCTV, Crestron lighting, Lutron blind control, pool control, HVAC, automation, and access control system. As the team worked through a tight deadline and everchanging COVID restrictions, they leaned on partners for support. Since the homeowner wanted the technology to blend into the background, Liquid Automation called in the help of an artist to hand paint the speaker grills to match the wood grain in the ceiling. Another contracted company also helped create custom plaster molds to synchronise with the bent, recessed Lutron Curtin tracks. To further hide the tech in the home, Liquid Automation installed a special lift in the master bedroom that can hide the television when not in use. Throughout the rest of the home, a Crestron DM video solution forms the core of the video distribution and provides a highperformance transport for 4K60 4:4:4 video. For audio, the Crestron Sonnex audio distribution system delivers high-output audiophile sound quality to every room. To control it all, a single Crestron TSW-1060 touch screen is used in the kitchen while the rest of the residence relies on Crestron TSR-310 remotes for AV selection and access to various integrated systems. CEDIA’s judges commented that the Private Golf Course Residence — New Zealand was “Well designed, well documented and well installed.” 37

Rabone Systems Rabone Systems says the performance objective for this property was to deliver a solution that enabled all sub systems to operate under a unified interface without complexity to the end user. For the vast majority of this project, the client was overseas, but it remained paramount that he had a clear understanding of what was being delivered. Since this residence was intended to serve as a holiday house, the client wanted the ability to host large gatherings and facilitate quality sound reproduction across all levels and zones with an even SPL coverage. A request like this in such an expansive home called for 22 audio zones and 80 ceiling speakers for background music application in addition to the dedicated cinema where Meridian Audio and Trinnov processing were used. The video distribution to the 16 AV zones was achieved using Crestron’s NVX video over IP solution as it allowed the flexibility to support locally switched sources and shared distributed sources on a scalable platform. With a property stretching six levels and incorporating 400+ lighting loads, the lighting control system within the property was inevitably vast, and the team felt it made the most sense for it to function based on scenes, schedules, and triggered events.

Ultimate Lifestyle Home TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

AVD Australia Pty Ltd In 2009, AVD Australia was contacted by a frustrated client who was constantly having issues with the technology in his home. The existing systems had been installed by a commercial integrator and were not meeting the client’s expectations. Over the next nine years, the homeowner turned to AVD Australia for minor spot upgrades before deciding to go all-in on a complete technology overhaul in 2019. The team spent the next eight months listening to the client’s goals and pain points and getting to know his family’s daily routines to create a home that functioned specifically for them—beginning with the a daily 5a.m. workout session and ending with the eldest child’s return home at 2a.m. At the home’s core, a Crestron PRO3 sits controlling the back end of the system with ease, while a Savant Pro Host manages the simple yet powerful user interface at the front. A 20-zone distributed audio system spans the entire property, of which three are surround zones, for the garden, gym and study. Each video source is connected to an endpoint card, which is connected to the network directly via fibre, for seamless data transmission and future upgradeability. These signals are then made available, on-demand, to all TVs throughout the house and in the cinema. CEDIA judges called the Ultimate Lifestyle Home “An excellent project with very professional and detailed supporting documentation. Great to see the focus on automation and how to match the client’s use of the property and daily routines.” 45

Luxury and Hi-Tech House in Suzhou TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Shanghai Sentiment Electronic Technology co., LTD This luxury home fixed beside the Jinji Lake was purchased by a successful business owner to live in with his newly married son. The homeowner wanted to create a space that combined the finest design work with the latest technology. To achieve this vision, Sentiment worked closely with a renowned Chinese design company throughout the entire process. The team chose the Dali system and DMX 512 for its ability to create a vivid atmosphere across the whole home. Audio brands including SpeakerCraft, Garvan, and RBH are dispersed throughout the home to play a selection of carefully crafted music choices. The design team played a major role in ensuring the products, keypads, speakers, and acoustical transparent fabric blended with the home’s aesthetic. The televisions in each room include different types of sound systems based on their surroundings. Some just have a soundbar while others have a full-on 5.1 entertainment system. But the ultimate audio experience can be found in the home cinema where Sentiment chose a 4K system, 4D movement system with D-box, a high-end amplifier with Trinnov, and a Moovia sofa to enjoy it all on. The client requested that the Sentiment maximise the screen size in the room and to ensure that the first row had the best viewing angle—his favourite place to sit. The entire gamut of products and rooms are powered by six racks: one for the low voltage system, one for the home theatre, one for karaoke, and three for the smart home system installed on each floor.

The viewing angle in the front row of the theatre is significantly larger than the CEDIA standard, per the request of the client.

CEDIA’s judges remarked that the Luxury and Hi-Tech House in Suzhou is “A large scale project that has been well integrated with the lifestyle of the owner and the design of the building.” 49

Metropolis TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Wavetrain Cinemas The odds were stacked high against Wavetrain Cinemas for this home theatre installation. There was no air conditioning in the room, a noisy exhaust fan was ducted right outside, and the ceiling height was just 2400mm high with several concrete beams that made it feel even smaller. To add to that, the sole inspiration photo these clients had was from Wavetrain’s previous Art Nouveau cinema integration with 3.2m ceilings. Before any work could begin, Wavetrain had to be honest with the clients about what would be realistic given the room’s proportions. With new inspiration in mind stemming from ‘Superman Returns’ and a reduced budget, Wavetrain got to work on a plan. As a complete, turnkey cinema company, Wavetrain produced all the architectural drawings for the project, plus interior design, mechanical engineering, and acoustic engineering. Once the design portion was down, the clients expressed their ideas for the theatre’s overall performance. They wanted the experience in their home to match that of a commercial theatre, but Wavetrain assured them that it could be even better. The team began with addressing the issues in the room and adding speakers and subwoofers to eliminate those problems. One of those issues was sound isolation. The client wanted to ensure that the cinema would not impact the lifestyle of the rest of the home. Wavetrain decided to create a cavity and double layer construction with greenglue and resilient mount the front speakers and subwoofers. CEDIA’s judges commended Wavetrain Cinemas’ ability to work with both monetary and physical limitations saying, “There were lots of constraints in the room taken into consideration by the integrator, even with the tight budget.” 55

The Powerhouse TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

The Digital Picture The residents of this exclusive over-50s community are avid movie lovers who wanted a cinema room that would replace the need for them to visit a commercial theatre. The community had already been populated for some time prior to this room being built, and the theatre formed the last phase of the retirement dream for these clients. It was important that the owners be able visit the room at all times of the day, bring their own food and drinks, and welcome additional guests, like their children and grandchildren. Some of the residents even formed their own movie club and make contributions towards costs for streaming services and the Kaleidescape movie store. There is a total of 40 seats in this theatre, which The Digital Picture admits was a bit of a challenge because of the room’s width. The team called in the help of local Australian distributor Cogworks to modify one of their existing electric cinema recliners for this project. As it turns out, this was the only full leather electric reclining cinema seating product in the country that could fill their requirements for a 3m total width for a row of four seats, without losing any width on the seat pan. For booming sound, there are 13 speakers and two subwoofers, and each wall has an array of four side speakers panning sound along the length of the room. Video comes courtesy of a commercial Epson 4K Enhanced E-shift projector with a light output of 9000L. CEDIA’s judges called this project “an excellent project with a clear benefit to all its users.” 59

Starlight Cinema TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Wavetrain Cinemas The owners of this home were looking for a cinema that would light up the night but would not go ‘bump’ in the night. That is, they wanted a booming sound system and a starry-lit ceiling that would not wake the kids. The design of the air-conditioning system was a major key in making this a reality and required a sharp attention to detail because even a single power point not sealed correctly would halve the sound isolation performance. As a turnkey cinema company, Wavetrain Cinemas was able to manufacture and install various A/C products and custom sound isolation doors to ensure that moviegoers would be uninterrupted by outside noise, and the rest of the house would be able to function without distraction. For the audio system, Wavetrain Cinemas chose Elementi Audio for its digital active, concert grade speakers capable of playing at a continuous level of 105dB with 3dB of headroom. The client wanted eight seats in the cinema with the option to upgrade to D-Box in the future, so D-Box ready seating was used on the rear row. The focal point of the room, the screen, is 165" wide with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio capable of achieving 100 nits of screen brightness—a necessity in creating a true HDR image in a cinema environment. The judges called the Starlight Cinema “an all-around strong entry with neat internal rack wiring and careful consideration for the HVAC and venting arrangements.” Shortly after this project was completed, Wavetrain Cinemas was called back by these clients for further upgrades to their home, including sound isolation all throughout—their main objective from the beginning. 63

Boutique AV A marriage of lateral design thought processes leadingedge technologies by Boutique AV has allowed them to take their client, a true audio enthusiast, into Another Dimension. To create an imaginative sanctum for undisturbed enjoyment, their clients requested a bespoke audio solution providing a rock concert experience while maintaining audio fidelity, sound containment and concert lighting. With the notion of starting where others stop — and pushing limits further than ever before — Boutique AV diverged from conventional solutions, swiftly honing in on the PMC MB3 XBD-A, a speaker capable of achieving 129dB SPL at 1m, free from any discernable distortion. While exploring the possibilities of just a sound room experience with their clients, Boutique AV drew their attention to the amazing quality of live concerts through remastered Blu-rays with HD audio, opening the design to a visual requirement with multi-channel audio. As the clients still possessed a main love for the classics, keeping an enviable treasure trove of records they requested a high-end turntable as a centrepiece for the room, allowing them to enjoy a singular nostalgic experience only LPs can produce. Further elevating the atmosphere in the room is 340m of pixel mapped LED light strip designed into the interior for an immersive experience like no other. The bespoke lighting solution dramatically extends the action beyond the conventional AV constraints, adding a new thrilling dimension to listening and watching media through Audio and Video to Light modes. As a result, twochannel listening, live concerts, music videos and movies witnessed in this room is an immersive experience that literally takes you to Another Dimension. While it is impossible to take in all the unique features of this room and its capabilities, CEDIA’s judges were confident that this room delivers an immersive experience that transcends the ordinary. 67
