CEDIA | The Smart Home Awards

The CEDIA Smart Home Awards is an annual showcase of excellence demonstrated by home technology professionals and manufacturers across the globe. The shows recognize the top projects, products, and individuals in the smart home technology industry –truly the cream of the crop. From whole home audio to lighting systems to dedicated home theatres and media rooms to networking and automation solutions, you’re sure to find inspiration when it comes to technology in the home.

The Awards are held regionally in the Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific regions. A panel of judges from all over the globe have assessed all winning entries from the three regions and identified “the best of the best.”

Members of the industry came together from all over the world gathered to celebrate. CEDIA celebrated its Americas regional members at an art-themed event during CEDIA Expo 2023 at the Denver Convention Center in Denver, Colorado. The event was sold out, and even the standing room at the back was full of members anxious to see who would take home an award. This was the first year hardware & software winners were announced during the Awards program, as well as Hall of Fame inductees.

CEDIA Awards | Judges

The CEDIA Awards are judged by an impartial panel of experts, without whose support as volunteers, the Awards program would not be possible. Technical judges from the US membership have assessed the project installation winners, paying close attention to every aspect of the project; from design and product specification, to calibration and documentation. The architectural judges consider how technology has complemented the architecture and interior design. A panel of past award-winning EMEA companies judge the two product categories, covering both hardware and software.

CEDIA Fellow | James Chen

James Chen is a US-Australian entrepreneur and global technology thought leader with over 30 years of experience in the AV industry. He began his career as an integrator, and is now the Managing Director of cable manufacturer, Kordz. Since joining the company in 2008, Chen has spearheaded Kordz’ development of multi-award-winning and patented cable innovation and expanded distribution to more than 40 countries.

Chen serves on CEDIA’s Technology Education Committee and Governance Committee. A technology enthusiast, Chen recently completed his study of Artificial Intelligence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He regularly authors and presents on

topics regarding technology to audiences around the world.

“It was a delightful surprise when David Weinstein phoned me to let me know of this honour,” said Chen.

CEDIA Lifetime Achievement Award | Steve Moore

Steve Moore decided against a career in architecture to launch a business selling high-end AV to music-loving homeowners nearly 40 years ago. He then left to set up SMC in 1993 and, inspired by a visit to CEDIA Expo that year, helped to launch CEDIA in the UK, running it alongside his own company from his London dining room, subsequently teaching at numerous CEDIA events worldwide.

SMC, like the industry in general, has grown enormously since then, and Moore has consulted for a wide variety of technology businesses, large and small, along the way. With strong successors running SMC, Moore is now semi-retired, and continues to support others operating in the connected home space.

“The best thing about this industry is all the wonderful people I’ve met and worked with over the years,” said Moore. “A huge number of individuals have selflessly provided so much of their time and expertise (which I’ve benefited from as much as others) and I’m therefore surprised, flattered, and humbled to have been recognized. It’s always inspiring to see the energy and enthusiasm of newcomers to this world, and I’m embarrassingly proud to have seen my own company grow to the point where the children of early employees are now key members of staff themselves. Inspired by an internationally famous architect, the clients who own this home wanted to ensure the design was cutting-edge and didn’t take away from the architecture. They requested high quality in all areas of the integration, one-of-a-kind elements, and that everything in the system be “totally invisible to the naked eye.” La Scala was up for the challenge and committed to conceptualizing and executing something “unbelievably fantastic.”

Most of the home has vertical wall slats in a natural wood color on the walls and ceilings, with large floor to ceiling windows looking out over the water. In a space this tall, sound pressure level was key to the integrator’s calculations. Although you can’t see the sound system, it still fills the home with high-quality sound throughout. La Scala noted that the vertical wall slats, though built for design, act as a natural sound di usion system.

The slats also made an ideal place to “hide” the customized Crestron control keypads. The 1-inch keypads fit snugly in the 2-inch gaps between the slats, ensuring the controls are — as requested — not an obvious part of the rooms. These keypads have specially programmed scenes that control the lighting at low, medium, and high intensities so the homeowners can easily adjust depending on the time of day and/or what they’re using the space for. They can also shut down the home with the touch of a button, which is convenient for nighttime security.

The client now believes in the artistry that is “the residential integrator.”

The judges commended the innovative solutions in the systems, and the thoughtful design. One explained that the project “shows what can be down with proper automation in terms of system self-reliance and interoperability.” Another said, “Beautifully executed project. The bespoke design details look very well considered.”

A true, one-of-a-kind home automated to perfection.

La Scala aimed for perfection in this large home integration project with truly amazing results. From day one there were challenges, such as having to place the wiring panels and equipment rack in two separate locations due to space constraints. It helped that the integrator “supplied nearly every system on the property” minus the pipes in the wall and the boiler. This allowed them to be flexible during the installation, make changes as needed, and better control equipment procurement.

There were many systems integrated into this home, though lighting and audio stood out from the rest. The homeowners can easily control all their systems with the custom-made Crestron user interface. One of their favorite features is the light and dark mode La Scala built in so that the panel changes colors at night. The integrator also added brass analog lighting controls in several areas of the house to add to both functionality and design.

As for the sound in the house? Though most of the system is invisible, the integrator assures us that “it bangs” – you can hear the landscape system for two blocks, they checked. Don’t worry, they added controls so the neighbors aren’t always inundated with their pool party music. In the house, each zone has an autosense feature that allows the homeowners to easily switch areas or inputs without having to find a remote.

The judges praised the project. One said, “I love the thought, the attention to detail, the pride in doing right by the client, the passion to be the best.” Another mentioned the “great use of di erent styles of control panel, faceplates, and the concealed speakers” in this lovely family home.

Perhaps the comment that stood out most is this: “This is how AV should be done and what the Awards should represent. It is an advert for excellence and shows the level CEDIA members can aspire to. As a 4-time award winner - I aspire to be this good.”

Truly a project beyond reproach.

The homeowner of this beautiful property requested an immersive audio and video experience that everyone in the home, including his wife and grandchildren, could use with ease. He also wanted high-quality sound and video throughout the home both indoors and outdoors.

Maxicon rose to the occasion by providing a Savant system to control the audio, video, and lighting systems. This seamless integration makes it possible for anyone in the home to easily change and control the integrated systems in 28 individual zones, including the large state-of-the-art home theatre room.

For added convenience, the integrator programmed automations into the system, making it possible to perform common tasks with one touch of a panel or button. For instance, at a specific time in the day, the motorized shades come down to protect the client’s artwork from direct sunlight. In the bedrooms, one touch of a button will bring the custom-built lifts with 75" TVs down and adjust the sound for the perfect viewing experience in that particular room.

One neat outdoor feature that sets this property apart from the rest is the custom built and painted LED screen. The screen blends with the landscape to create a perfect combination of technology and nature.

Another feature Maxicon provided that exceeded expectations was a unique underwater lighting and camera system. The light fixtures were installed in the dock to attract fish and other marine wildlife. This interaction with the lighting is recorded and displayed live in the home. This is one of many reasons the project was highly commended in innovation!

This home exemplifies how beautiful and functional wellintegrated technology can be. Although there were many challenges associated with the Hawaiian electric grid, Pacific Audio was able to provide easy-to-use solutions that fit what the client wanted and needed all throughout the home.

The project is truly an integrated home. Pacific Audio’s goal was to provide a “state-of-the-art smart environment that enhanced comfort, convenience, and security” for the family. They provided integration for many systems including audio distribution, video distribution, lighting, network, HVAC control, shade control, pool, and more.

Because the owner had a previous home in Colorado that used Savant-based home automation and Lutron lighting, they wanted to ensure their new system would be as easy to control. To meet their needs, the integrator put in a Crestron system that the homeowners could easily self-program. Due to logistics challenges and unique limitations, Pacific Audio crafted a first-of-its-kind hybrid solution using the Crestron Simpl and Crestron Home solutions. This allows the homeowners to program and adjust their own system without calling a programmer to come onsite.

Other unique features of the property include a robust power conditioning and battery backup system to counter the notorious electric grid issues and a Doorbird surveillance system that senses when a vehicle arrives at the front gate. Rather than having to “buzz” someone in, the gate opens automatically when it senses a vehicle.

The judges commended the project for “good automation and integration,” and said that the “lighting is really nice.” Overall, they agreed that it was a job well done.

Luxurious and relaxing lighting is a high point in the master bedroom looking out on a paradise view.

For this project, Wenner put together a “fully automated Crestron luxury home where advanced technology is integrated seamlessly.” There were four defining objectives: comfort, convenience, energy e ciency, and security.

To create a comfortable yet convenient space, Wenner programmed the Crestron automation system so the homeowners can adjust lighting, temperature, and audio/video settings based on their preferences. The homeowners can set up scenes in individual areas of their home that will change the lighting, blinds, and music at the touch of a button. Even the window coverings can be controlled using their custom Intuitiv touch panel, smartphone, or tablet.

Energy e ciency was important to the client, so Wenner built in lighting and HVAC monitoring (along with other energyconsuming devices) so automation can turn the systems o when not in use. While energy e cient, the home was also designed for luxury. In particular, the lighting was “meticulously curated” to be immersive and elevate the quality of life at home. The judges noticed and pointed out the bespoke design: “Great, tasteful lighting.”

Like most homeowners, the client requested robust security, which Wenner integrated into the project. At any time, from anywhere they might be, the homeowner can control their surveillance cameras and access to their home. The system includes discrete motion sensors, glass break detectors, and gated entry points with intercom capabilities and 2N authentication features.

PROJECT Drive-In Theater

This gorgeous home cinema was built for a luxury home builder. After he purchased his dream home in southern California, he wanted to add a dedicated cinema space. Deciding against digging under the home, he reached out to Audio Images to see if they could transform an old carport into a good quality movie room. After an onsite visit, the integrator determined that all mechanical systems would have to be replaced, the room would have to be closed o and sound isolated, and they had to do something about the prominent ceiling beam.

The space was tricky, especially since the client wanted “jawdropping sound and picture.” Audio Images enlisted the help of Anthony Grimani’s PMI Engineering group to get the project done. All the details were considered when reconfiguring the space, installing a new HVAC system to meet noise requirements, and installing a specialty, acoustically treated drape system over the windows.

When all was said and done, the team was able to create a room that was “beyond expectations” that provides a “breathtaking cinematic experience.”

The judges were impressed with the transformation. One noted, “Fantastic transformation of the space, with careful acoustic design overcoming the e ects of the large, glazed sections.” Another said, “All around, a very nice design and installation in a di cult space. AV performance appears maximized for the space and construction detailing is particularly impressive.”

The most important judge, the client, was thrilled with his theatre. Audio Images shared that he uses it for “movies and TV (and even music listening) at least 2-3 nights a week.”

Occupying a prominent role in the tech industry and moonlighting as a film producer, the client demanded a screening room that didn’t just meet industry standards but significantly exceeded them.

When a notable Silicon Valley executive called Audio Images requesting a consultation, they initially thought it might be a practical joke. As it turned out, the client had chosen them to construct a reference-quality screening room in their home because they’re a CEDIA award-winning home theatre design and installation integrator.

Building an immaculate theatre experience for a film studio owner and movie producer is no easy task. The project started with the goal of building a system that “outshone any commercial theatre, while also o ering superior audio reproduction.” Further, the client likes powerful bass and wanted the room to be optimized for video gaming, not just movies.

To meet the client’s expectations, the integrator worked closely with interior designer Lynda Murray Interior Design and acoustical engineer Anthony Grimani to create a space where form meets function. To provide for the best acoustics, the room is encased in fabric. This creates a clean look that also hides the acoustic treatments and speakers without compromising on sound quality.

Though Audio Images faced many challenges within the space, collaboration and thoughtful integration created a “space where technology and design come together to create an unparalleled viewing and gaming experience” that exceeded client expectations.

One judge noted, “A very well-designed cinema with some thoughtful design touches in terms of equipment mounting etc.”

The back of the rack view is equally as tidy and impressive.

Creating the correct lighting programming and playing an audio track gave a similar experience as walking through a ride at Disney World.

This intricately themed theatre shows that form and function can work together. The client requested Atlanta Home Theater install a high-performance theatre with a Star Wars theme. The theme was of utmost importance despite concerns that traditional theatre design quality might not be possible. Happily, the integrator says, “The many nooks and crevices of the themed design led to the entire room being a di user, which allowed the room to have a more balanced sound than anticipated.”

The judges commended Atlanta Home Theater on the home cinema saying, “The room looks amazing, very creative project” and “the integration of what the client wanted with existing conditions is phenomenal!”

Outside of the room, the hallway leading to the theatre provides an immersive experience as though walking through a corridor of the Death Star. The hallway includes a specific themed lighting experience and audio track.

An unusual, and rather exceptional part of this project is that the equipment rack is incorporated into the design. Rather than hiding the rack, Atlanta Home Theater cleverly built it into the wall and used themed lighting to seamlessly blend technology and design. According to the integrator, the project results “left everyone happy” – both the sound quality and design.

One judge sums up the project well: “The outcome of this project is fabulous!”

Every detail, including the room controls, blends seamlessly into the theme.

MEDIA ROOM

The room is not a dedicated home theatRE, but the client wanted dedicated home theatRE performance. The end result is an absolutely overwhelming experience in either A/V use or human performance modes.

There were many challenges to make this room not only work correctly but have high quality sound and lighting.

PROJECT Teatro Agape

This unique “pie-shaped” room posed quite a few challenges for the Cantara team. In fact, they shared that when they first received the project request, they laughed because it was a “horn-shaped room with an open hallway on both sides.” Not to mention the bar in the back of the room and a two-story spiral staircase to one side. In addition to the funky room shape, the client requested a room that could provide a top notch theater experience as well as children’s plays, live business presentations, karaoke nights, DJing, and parties. It was a tall order, to say the least.

After the initial shock, the integrator rose to the occasion and began planning the ideal room within the existing space and client vision. Pie-shaped rooms, especially those with nonparallel walls and curved rear walls are extremely challenging from an acoustics point of view. To balance the sound, Cantara installed acoustic treatment on the walls and used in-wall bass traps to ensure the bass sounds clean no matter what sound is coming from the speakers.

In addition, the integrator installed motorized drapes to make the space function as a dedicated room when the client wants. They explained that this helps “close o the room psychologically” and improve the sound quality that was very carefully calibrated to be as high-performance as possible. All of which can be controlled with a simple Savant user interface touch pad.

One judge noted “The use of curtains to hide parts of the house that present challenges for sound distribution was top notch.” Another praised the thoughtful design saying it’s an “innovative solution to a di cult space.”

This multipurpose media room can be used for films, live performances, and even DJing!

We designed each unit to have a base package of lighting, speakers, TVs, and access control. Only one unit chose the base package; everyone else wanted to customize.

PROJECT The Aerie Project

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR AUDIOVISIONS

For this project, AUDIOVISIONS was tasked with creating customizable solutions for seven individual condo units and a common area. The goal? To connect eight separate systems through high-end technology systems while being mindful of the architecture.

One of biggest challenges the integrator faced was space to complete the installation. In commercial buildings, it’s common to have a 2–3-foot crawl space between units, but this building did not. In some areas, the space was only 2 inches, which meant AUDIOVISIONS had to get creative to ensure sound didn’t travel through the walls and ceiling into other units. Their solution was to use Acoustic Innovation springs for the drywall to make it sound absorbing, as well as installing Sonance super thin speakers to fit the space.

AUDIOVISIONS converted the centralized HVAC system into individual zones for each of the 8 areas and provided a comprehensive surveillance system. Each homeowner needed to be able to control the security of their home, manage access to the dock, back entrance, and parking area, and operate the common area controls with ease. The common area features a pool, poolside bar, boat dock, and private beach. Thanks to the integrator, they can do this through an easy-to-use Savant user interface.

Lighting proved to be a fun part of the project, as AUDIOVISIONS created automated lighting sequences so the exterior of the building changes colors for a specific set of holidays. If homeowners want to change the colors on their property, they can do so. Because security is integrated with lighting, in case of an emergency, all lights will turn on automatically.

The judges noted that the project has, “Thoughtful design and installation that works well.”

The system in this home was designed to be user-friendly and easy to maintain, ensuring a hassle-free experience for the homeowners. It encompasses fully integrated lighting, security, HVAC, and audio systems, as well as a dedicated home theater. Additionally, an enterprise-grade network system is in place, providing seamless Wi-Fi coverage throughout the space.

SAV Digital Environments kept meticulous documentation throughout the project, including:

The integrator noted that the client was very open to suggestions, which allowed the entire project to follow high CEDIA standards. This is an impressive feat, as the client requested their new home mimic their former system in New York City including control, lighting, HVAC, and security systems.

The judges commended the project. One noted, “Well-specified system with good scope.” Because the documentation is so clean and thorough throughout the project, another said, “What a beautiful home, having the same system as their other home will really strengthen the feel of ‘home.’”

PROJECT Loving the Landscape

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR ETC Florida

When a former client called, unhappy with the lackluster exterior lighting on his home, ETC Florida came to the rescue. As the integrator explained, the client wanted a lighting system “so unique and dramatic” that his house would “feel and look like a resort.” He also wanted to highlight the beautiful art and architecture at night.

This project wasn’t without challenges, though. In order to provide an outdoor lighting experience that exceeded expectations, ETC did many calculations so lighting fixtures would be exactly how they wanted. From going under the driveway to having lighting on both sides of the access road to determining how the plants surrounding the lights would grow, every decision was precise.

Almost every type of lighting was used to create this outdoor oasis for the homeowner, for a total of 249 fixtures. When the project was complete, including a number of automation features, the result was stunning. The homeowner was thrilled, saying, “The house looks amazing. It feels like a completely di erent home!”

The judges were impressed by the thoughtful installation. One noted the “great design and end result.” Another commended the integrator’s ability to overcome the retrofit challenges saying, “the results are impressive.”

Lighting accentuates the gorgeous architecture and detail of the ceiling.

All of the programming was done to bring out the absolute best of the interior design.

PROJECT

Historic Music Room, Boston

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR TSP Smart Spaces

This project merged 19th century architecture with state-ofthe-art lighting to create a gorgeous and usable music room.

TSP Smart Spaces previously worked with the client for another integration project and was happy to rethink the lighting for this music room to make it functional for the whole family. They needed to make the room brighter, create flexible lighting, and ensure all controls were integrated with the rest of the smart home system, including audio and fireplaces.

Because of the historical architecture, the integrator designed the lighting to highlight the one-of-a-kind details and art. This museum-esque setup has scenes that accentuate the ornamentation of the room and play on the shadows. The technology is discreet, ensuring a timeless look.

TSP Smart Spaces faced some challenges during the project, including the delicate details and plaster on masonry architecture. Because the project was completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the client requested as little contact as possible, which meant all design reviews were done remotely using imaging technology. Even walkthroughs with project partners were remote – lighting design partner Fourth Dimension Lighting relied solely on virtual walkthroughs and limited architectural plans for their design, never setting foot in the space.

Some additional details about this beautiful room include the fact that the homeowner can control each aspect with the Savant Pro app and the ceiling has di erent color levels, such as dusk, that turn on at specified times during the day. The music room is, as the integrator explains, the “gem of the home,” but the entire 15,000 square foot property is expertly automated and the technology works seamlessly together.

The judges praised this project. One noted the “Stunning end result under challenging circumstances,” calling it “perfection.” Another complimented, “Stunning space, beautifully lit, especially with the historic limitations.” All-in-all, a beautiful, award-winning room.

Architecture and art were both considered to ensure ideal lighting in every nook and cranny.

As this project’s name implies, this highly technical yet flawless design would impress just about anyone. Unlike many home theatre projects, the racks and equipment were built into the theme of the room rather than being hidden.

The racks are built into the wall in the hallway leading to the homeowner’s home theatre, adding to the Star Wars theme impact. Every design detail, including red and white LED lighting was included to fit the client’s vision.

Some useful features that make this project stand out, aside from the aesthetics, are a dedicated AC system behind the racks and a high-capacity UPS. The AC system maintains a technologysafe 60 to 65-degree Fahrenheit temperature behind the racks, ensuring the system can function at its best no matter when the client decides to use the theatre. Atlanta Home Theater shared that the UPS system they installed provides clean battery power and surge protection throughout the home, which is a great addition to any tech and integration project.

The judges praised the integrator for its presentation of the technology. One commended the project saying, “Beautifully finished racks.” Another pointed out, “Visually neat and the lighting makes a nice feature of the racks.”
