Young Inventors of CHP! CHP’s Robotics Elective is designed to expose students to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fundamentals within the context of building, programming, and controlling virtual and live robots. Students apply the skills learned in exciting competitions while building habits of learning, confidence, and teamwork skills along the way. The Robotics team of CHP is a member of FLL (First Lego League) and takes part in tournaments and scrimmage matches all year round. Recently, our Middle School students (Grades 5-8) took part in their first tournament of the year - FLL Bound Brook Bash, hosted by Bound Brook High School. This qualifying event had more than 22 teams participating in it. The Robotics team of CHP, known as Wildcats@CHP, consisting of Afzaal Mohamed, Ayaan Youssuf, Raj Metha, Nico Garofalo, and Saarth Gupta, made us proud by demonstrating the Core Values of FLL (Teamwork, Discipline & Inclusion) not only during practice sessions but also on the day of the event. Their Innovation Project, Architectural Glasses, received multiple compliments from the judges and audience! Many thanks to Mrs. Verma, Mrs. Iyengar, and the parents for their invaluable support during this project.

PRESCHOOL - KINDERGARTEN NEWS A Tasteful Election! The children in preschool participated in the election process at school. They were given a few cheese balls and veggie sticks. After tasting each, the children voted for their favorite by individually placing their choice picture into the ballot box. After each child was done, we counted their ballots. The winner was the cheese balls!
A Cultural Fiesta Diwali is an Indian festival of lights. It usually lasts for five days. This year the holiday started on November 12th. The festival gets its name from the row of clay lamps that are lit in their homes. Some traditions of the holiday include getting new clothes and jewelry, eating sweets, exchanging gifts, and decorating the house with diyas and flowers and the most favorite tradition of all is bursting fireworks! Preschoolers learned about this holiday by listening to a story called, Binny’s Diwali. They colored their own beautiful paper diyas. Big shoutout to Keshav’s mom for being a guest reader and helping the children with a Diwali craft.
A Collage of Family Traditions We love family traditions because they are such an easy way to build happy memories together! Children in preschool were asked to make a “family traditions” collage of pictures that capture memories of their yearly traditions with the help of their parents. Some of their traditions were annual summer or holiday trips, birthday celebrations, and holiday parties. Each student recalled their pictures as they shared their cultures and traditions with the class.
Little Nature Explorers Preschoolers started their tree study in November. We explored and investigated parts of a tree, what lives in trees, what grows on trees, and what is made from trees. The children made their own binoculars to better see as they walked around campus. We started by placing a large white paper on a tree. The children were given crayons to rub on the paper. They noticed that the trunk of the tree was bumpy and not smooth. Our next adventure was the scavenger hunt. The children were given a colorful sheet of things they needed to find pertaining to trees. Wearing their binoculars to help them find these items, the children were so excited to check off the items that were found. The only item that wasn’t seen was a feather. Another day, we went out on our campus to collect various sizes and different colored leaves. We brought them into class and sorted them by size. We continued our investigations by using magnifying glasses to look closely at the acorns, and veins on the leaves, branches, and pinecones. Using balance pans, the children placed acorns and pinecones in the cups. They discovered that the pinecone was heavier than the acorns. We will end our Tree Study the first week of December with a few more exciting activities.

PRESCHOOL - KINDERGARTEN NEWS Preschoolers Learn All About Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is a time when we count our blessings and celebrate with our family and friends. The preschool class discussed the things that they are thankful to have in their lives. Some of the things they are thankful for are their toys, family, parents, and food. For a Thanksgiving craft, the preschoolers designed their own turkey with different colored feathers. On each feather was a letter in their name. The children glued the feathers in the correct order to spell their names. We also made a Thanksgiving placemat for them to use on their Thanksgiving table. As a group, the children made a Friendship Fruit Salad. Each child brought in an item to contribute to this fruit salad cornucopia. Everyone enjoyed combining the ingredients together, but the best part was eating it! We also made a beaded friendship bracelet as we listened to a story about Thanksgiving.
Veteran’s Day Celebration in Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten also had a virtual guest speaker to honor Veterans Day. Specialist Marcel from U.S. Army. Mr. Marcel also happens to be one of our student’s brothers. Specialist Marcel spoke to the children about his job and some of the special gear that he wears to protect himself. He told the kids why Veterans Day is celebrated and the importance of it. All the students from Preschool and Pre Kindergarten were great listeners and asked many interesting questions.
Mock Elections in Pre-Kindergarten The Pre-Kindergarten classes had an enriching experience learning about voting and the significance of having voting rights. Every student in our class was given the chance to cast their vote in our ballot box and choose their favorite sport from among football, soccer, and basketball. We then counted the votes and declared the winning sport. The students thoroughly enjoyed this activity and even had fun coloring their “I voted” stickers.

Pre-Kindergarten Celebrates Thanksgiving The Pre-Kindergarten classrooms celebrated Thanksgiving with a class party. Both Prek A and B got together and enjoyed the Thanksgiving feast family style. The students had a wonderful time eating good food and appreciating the edible cornucopias. Along with the celebration, the students also had a dance party and made crafts that portrayed what they were thankful for and were displayed in our CHP hallways. We ended our Thanksgiving celebration by making Turkey crowns and the kids had the opportunity to pose with our “Give Thanks” backdrop. Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful and our kids enjoyed their time with their friends.
Oreo for President! Can you imagine teaching kids about Election Day with cookies? Well, our Kindergarten teachers came up with one of the most exciting and hands-on lessons on Social Studies. The Kindergarten children learned all about voting and Election Day by casting their votes for three different cookie categories - Oreo, chocolate chip, and animal cookies! They also read a book titled Duck For President. The students learned that all of us have the freedom to choose who or what we like best, but it is the most accumulated votes that determine the winner. Each child voted, and we tallied up the votes. Oreo cookies won! What a ‘sweet’ way to learn about one of the most crucial citizenship rights!
Kindergarten Wishes Happy Thanksgiving! Just as the Pilgrims and Native Americans joined together for their Thanksgiving Feast, the kindergarten classes got together and created their cornucopia. Each child filled their waffle cone with delicious grapes, blueberries, strawberries, apples, and whipped cream. This made for a great pre-Thanksgiving treat! PRESCHOOL - KINDERGARTEN NEWS Delightful Diwali! Our Kindergarten students embrace all celebrations and today that celebration was Diwali! The children learned that Diwali is a festival of lights celebrated by Hindus all over the world. Diwali honors Lord Rama’s victory of goodness against evil and light over dark. Diwali lasts for five fun-filled days. The children also learned that families clean and decorate their homes with beautiful lights and colors. Women make Rangoli patterns to be put outside their houses to welcome the Gods. Everyone wears their best clothing. During Diwali, fireworks fill the night sky with bright colors. Sweets are exchanged and families and friends enjoy time together. The Kindergarten children listened to two books read by Neev’s mom and Shivam’s mom. The moms also brought delicious treats like Samosas, Kesar Peda, Kaju Katli, and Gulabjamun. The children enjoyed their delicious treats and colored Diwali pictures. Everybody had a wonderful time! Thank you so much to our moms who came in to teach us about Diwali.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS Exploring Nature The 1st graders enjoyed their first NJIN Field Trip this month. Students learned about natural resources and learned how to build shelters using branches. We also created some beautiful nature collages and the children were fascinated by the farm horses and interesting wildlife. We ended the day reflecting in their journals as we sat by the gorgeous lake at NJIN. It was a memorable trip and we look forward to going back in December.
First Graders Craft Creative Little Turkeys! In first grade, we read Turkey Disguise by Wendy Silvano, and then decorated and disguised our own turkeys. The first grade showed unbelievable creativity on this project. We also conducted a cranberry floating experiment.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS A Patriotic Assembly November 11, 2023, is a very important day in the United States. On this day, many schools recognize their staff and the families of students who served in the US armed forces. At CHP, we leave no stone unturned in educating students about important federal holidays. We are so proud of our 2nd grade teacher Ms. Marygrace Piccolomini for organizing a student-focused lineup of events at the school assembly in lieu of Veteran’s Day. Ms. Piccolomini invited two speakers - Ms. Christine Smith, a 2nd-grade parent, and veteran, to share her experience about serving the U.S. Navy and Mr. Nick Eucaliptus, Special Officer (Alpha Troop 102 Cavalry Regiment) of the US Army National Guard, to share what it’s like to be an active member of the military. Students were in awe as Officer Eucaliptus spoke of his preparation for deployment to Syria in January 2024. Second graders also recited a beautifully written poem as a token of appreciation for their time and efforts in serving our Nation. Students from Grade 1 who were on a farm trip made their presence felt by surprising Officer Eucaliptus with a touching letter and gift as a respectful gesture. It was a memorable assembly and we at CHP are proud of our community that stands together to celebrate significant events such as Veteran’s Day! Click Here to See More Images
Fun-filled Diwali 2nd Grade celebrated Diwali on November 2nd. The celebration included a table display of many different colored diyas (lamps) so students could learn from them. We also played a short, informational video detailing the importance of the holiday for the community. Students danced to traditional music and played games such as Diwali BINGO to better understand the significance of one of India’s biggest festivals.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS Halloween Adventures Third graders were treated to an animated reading by Scott Richard, Kenny's dad. He read not just one but two books! The first one was a story written by Kenny's cousin Paul (with a little help from Kenny's Dad) called The First Adventure of Boris the Turtle Tortoise. The students loved the story and will be drawing pictures that will be included once the book is published. The second book was There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Ghost by Lucille Colandro. Filled with hilarious illustrations and fun rhyming text, this Halloween-themed book in the Old Lady series was perfect for the month of October. Thank you so much for coming and reading to us!
Inspiring Young Readers Our other mystery reader was Janet Dickerson, Zola's mom. She read Thunder Rose by Jerdine Nolen with illustrations by acclaimed artist Kadir Nelson. Thunder Rose vows to grow up to be more than just big and strong, thank you very kindly – and boy, does she ever! When a whirling storm on a riotous rampage threatens, has Rose finally met her match? Jerdine Nolen's wondrous tale and Kadir Nelson's outstanding illustrations bring to life this larger-than-life story about a resilient young girl who overcomes adversity even in the face of mother nature. Thank you for reading this inspirational book to us. The students loved the bookmarks Ms. Dickerson handed out! We look forward to many more readers in third grade.
‘Thankful’ for Mystery Readers! Third graders welcomed Ms. Quyana Franklin, Milan’s mom as a mystery reader. She read ‘Junie B. Jones: Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten (and Other Thankful Stuff)’ by Barbara Park. It’s Thanksgiving! And whichever class comes up with the best Thankful List will win a pumpkin pie! Only being thankful is harder than it looks. Because Junie B. Jones is not thankful for Tattle May. Or squash. And pumpkin pie makes her sick, anyway. Does Room One stand a chance of winning? The third graders loved the book and the animated reading as it was the perfect one for November with Thanksgiving right around the corner. Thank you for coming and reading to us Ms. Franklin!
‘Twas the Week Before Thanksgiving! Third graders welcomed Mrs. and Mr. Bigos as mystery readers in their classrooms. They read the book ‘We Don’t Eat Our Classmates’- a book about a dinosaur who joins a school (with human children) and finds it very difficult to make friends since she keeps eating her classmates. It’s the first day of school for Penelope Rex, and she can’t wait to meet her classmates. But it’s hard to make human friends when they’re so darn delicious! That is until Penelope gets a taste of her own medicine and finds she may not be at the top of the food chain after all! Third graders gobbled up this hilarious new story from the award-winning authorillustrator Ryan T. Higgins. Thank you for reading to us Mr. and Mrs. Bigos! 8 | November Newsletter
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS Passionate Third Graders! Ariana describes herself as an amazing artist. During her free time, she enjoys playing with her friends. Ariana is passionate about helping the homeless. Carter describes himself as a mighty mathematician. Carter enjoys playing video games and reading Dog Man books. Nicholas describes himself as a mighty mathematician and an awesome athlete. Nicholas is passionate about finding ways to protect the environment.
3rd Graders ‘Moving’ in the Right Direction Ms. Kotasthane and her third graders investigated how forces affect the way objects move with some classroom experiments using simple materials like toy cars and books. They first made a prediction of how the height of a ramp will change a toy car’s motion. Then they carried out an investigation. First, they stacked 2 books on the floor. They leaned a piece of cardboard along the top book to make a ramp. They taped the edge of the cardboard to the floor. They placed a toy car at the top of the ramp and released the car. They used a meter stick to measure the distance the car traveled. They recorded the distance the car traveled in the data table. They repeated the steps for a total of three trials. Then they repeated the above steps with a stack of four books. They compared the distances the toy car traveled with the two ramps. They noticed a pattern and extended their learning by predicting what would happen if the ramp had six books.
Gratitude Turkeys by Third Graders Thanksgiving is the perfect time of the year to spend a little extra time to reflect and help our students reflect on the things that they are truly grateful for. We created a turkey craft while discussing gratitude.

Congratulations to all of our Grade 4 students who participated in the National Young Authors’ Fair! The ultimate goal was to have a book published. Our published authors include: Aarush, Arnav, Dylan, Geetha, Indigo, Isra, Mahalakshmi, Siyana, Vallabh, and Viraj. On Monday, Dec. 4th, Grade 4 will get to enjoy one another’s accomplishments during our National Young Authors’ Sharing Day!
Grade 4 Celebrates November Birthdays!
During November, Grade 4 celebrated three more birthdays! Happy Birthday to Aarush, Laila, and Risa! We hope your birthdays were filled with joy! Thank you to their families for sharing their birthday celebrations with our class!
NJIN Farm Trip
November 8th was a beautiful, crisp autumn day….perfect weather for our trip to the NJIN Farm! Led by Ms. Nan, a nature walk introduced the students to some of the organisms within the farm’s ecosystem and the interdependent relationships they share. A Sensory Scavenger Hunt through the farm provided images for our writing and various leaves for our tracings and wind chimes. Students were also introduced to several naturalist apps that helped us identify various organisms. Our farm experience ended as we sat around the pond and wrote of our sensory explorations, enjoying the serenity and beauty of the environment.
Kids Can Make a Difference!
Grade 4 has been reading a selection of stories centered around the theme “Making a Difference.” Through their readings, Grade 4 students have realized that we all have many opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others…and that Kids Can Make a Difference, as well as adults! As children helped a shy child gain confidence and Louis Braille began inventing his system of Braille at the age of 12, each story was inspirational to the students and will serve as a springboard for our future writings.
The Lenni-Lenape People of New Jersey
During their research of the Lenni-Lenape people of New Jersey, Grade 4 students further expanded their understanding of the importance of conserving and protecting of our natural resources. This became especially clear as they learned how the Lenni-Lenape’s creativity and resourcefulness helped them to survive and create a thriving community built around their use of the natural resources of the region

Grade 4 students had a chance to reflect on all that they are grateful for as they learned about the history of Thanksgiving and created wreaths of thankfulness.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Middle Schoolers Make a Difference We are so proud of CHP’s middle school students for organizing and contributing towards a fundraising activity aimed at helping children in need. The activity was part of the 2023-2024 community giving. Families less fortunate than us need warm clothes during the winter season, and our students reached out to local businesses, neighbors, and friends and asked for sock donations. The ‘Socktober’ event led to students procuring over 2,000 pairs of socks which were donated to two local shelters - The Center for Great Expectations in Somerset and Ozanam Family Shelter in Edison.

When we asked one of our students who brought in hundreds of socks, she said “Donating socks to the shelters made me feel very happy because I realized that some people are not as fortunate as others. The people who received them must have been extremely excited when they got them. I would love to do something like this again.” All the students felt that it was a great opportunity to make a positive impact and were grateful for the chance to contribute to a worthy cause.
Memories of a lifetime! CHP Middle School attended their annual 3-day/night educational field trip on November 6-8. The autumn leaves welcomed grades 5 to 8 at Fairview Lake and camp run by the YMCA. The students bunked in lakeside cabins with their teachers as chaperones. Fairview’s expert counselors took our CHP middle school students through a vast array of experiences such as canoeing, hiking a 1,500-foot ridge providing a spectacular view, candle making, ecology hikes, cider making, team building activities in the woods, predator/prey activities, night hikes for how the eyesight of mammals work, and so much more. We sang songs around the campfire, roasted marshmallows for smores, and shared so many experiences in those three days. Thank you, Fairview and we can’t wait for next year’s trip! MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Superhero Deetya! We are so proud of our 8th grader Deetya Tandon’s achievement in the 8th Annual Battle of Champions Martial Arts Tournament, which was held on October 21, 2023, in Toms River, NJ. Deetya won two third-place trophies for breaking and sparring.
The Election Results are OUT! Congratulations Winners! On Tuesday, November 21, 2023, the CHP House System held its officer elections for the 2023-2024 school year. The candidates each ran a great campaign. They designed their promotional visuals announcing their campaign message and candidate qualifications which they hung around the Middle School building. Each House gathered as a group and listened to their candidates’ speeches before taking turns voting electronically in booths divided by their respective Houses. On Monday, December 4, 2023, the House winners took the oath of fulfilling their leadership duties for the 2023-24 school year. SPECIALS Project “Mi Monstruo” Students in Spanish World Language class created an innovative Halloween craft! Ms. Soto helped the students design their own version of a monster and the children labeled the body parts in Spanish. Each child also described their idea of a spooky monster. It was definitely a fun way of learning to label parts of the body in Spanish! The project also helped children recognize the power of using their imagination and creative potential while learning a foreign language!
Celebrating National French Week! On Monday, November 20, CHP celebrated the Annual French National Week. Under the guidance of Ms. Sherine Gergesse, the French students celebrated French culture and educated CHP’s students about the language and its history with an array of creative performances and presentations. This year, the theme was “All around me, la francophonie!” The eighth-grade students in The French Honor Society worked tirelessly on their performance of ‘The Three Little Pig’ play, which came to life on stage to the applause of the crowd. The students also presented an informative slideshow about famous French trivia facts. The 8th graders then went to each grade of students in the audience to play a round of Kahoot! The finale of the performance was the much-awaited Chicken Dance in French lyrics! The teachers and students ended up joining the dance! Reflecting on an Unforgettable Moment: Cedar Hill Prep School’s Historic Production of “The Invention of Edison”! We’re filled with nostalgia and pride for our community as we look back on the incredible milestone achieved during our 20th year - being the FIRST school in New Jersey to produce the Musical “The Invention of Edison”! On November 21st, our stage came alive with the magic of this groundbreaking musical tied to our rich history in the state of New Jersey. This production was truly electrifying! Showcasing the immense talent of our students and executing every last detail highlighted the level of creative excellence that Cedar Hill Prep operates on daily. Our utmost gratitude goes out to everyone who played a part in making history with us. Your support and enthusiasm made this effort the most special to date.

An Evening of Togetherness and Celebration Diwali is a celebration of light, the victory of good over evil, and positivity. At CHP, hundreds of families came together to celebrate the festival of lights. The evening started with the ‘lighting of the lamps’, a symbol of fighting darkness and negativity. Ms. Nan, Mr. Seeley, Ms. Donna Pizappi, Ms. Sangeetha Lekhi and Ms. Aparna Chaudhari lit the lamp as the crowd watched. To watch Mr. Seeley and Ms. Nan take over the dance floor and perform a 6-minute medley of songs along with some of our staff including Ms. Lekhi and Ms. Pizappi was nothing short of brilliant. The thunderous applause that followed was proof of how much the crowd enjoyed the performance that was choreographed by our loving Pre-K teacher Ms. Priya Menon. The audience was in for yet another surprise when a group of 8th-grade girls took over the dance floor and mesmerized everyone with their performance. Holiday Buzz at Pizza With the Principal! At the end of the month, CHP hosts a very special event - Pizza with Principal Seeley! As students entered the art room, they eagerly lined up for a chance to chat with Mr. Seeley. Conversations were endless and students spoke to him about their holiday plans, his pet cat, and other interesting topics. We thank Mr. Seeley for being the perfect lunch date for the selected students at Pizza with the Principal! Keep an eye out for more fun stories from CHP!

A Warm Coat A Day Helps Keep the COLD Away! Winter season is officially here and there are several families that are in dire need of winter coats. Please donate new or gently used, clean winter coats and winter gear such as scarves, mittens, gloves and socks to help those in need of warm clothes this cold season. Your donations will help the less fortunate families in the Plainfied area. We will have boxes set up from December 4th until December 14th in the middle and lower school buildings. DnD Woodshop Students Create Masterpieces The Fall session of our after-school woodshop club was one of the busiest yet! The Kindergarten through 4th-grade students did an amazing job building several cool projects like LEGO holder trays and learning about the different tools, including hammering! We look forward to the Winter session which will begin in mid-January. Stay tuned for more information.
