CHP Spelling Bee Double Victory

Seventh Graders Take Top Honors in School Spelling Bee! Cedar Hill Prep’s return from Winter Break was quite busy as students in grades 3 – 8 gathered in the Gym to support their classmates who were competing in the annual CHP school-wide Spelling Bee. The competition began with eight participants. By round 11, four participants remained: fourth graders, Alexa and Allison D’Souza, and seventh graders, Meghana Indupuru and Aditi Prabhakaran. Then from rounds 11 through 19, it became even more impressive as these four students competed against one another as their audience sat in awe at their spelling prowess. They advanced to the Championship round and went on to compete in two rounds until a winner was declared in the 21st round when Meghana correctly spelled acquiesce. Congratulations to Meghana Indupuru (1st place winner) and Aditi Prabhakaran (runner-up) for their amazing performances and sportsmanship! PRESCHOOL - KINDERGARTEN NEWS Happy Start to the New Year! New Year Celebration

Preschoolers enthusiastically welcomed the New Year at our school. Adorned with party hats and clock noise makers, the children engaged in a playful countdown, imagining it was 10 seconds before midnight. After mastering numbers 1-10, they expressed their creativity by coloring a delightful New Year picture. The highlight? Assembling the cut and numbered pieces back together!

Exploring Patterns

This week at Cedar Hill Prep School, our preschoolers delved into the concept of patterns. Through engaging activities like lining up crayons, singing songs, enjoying stories, and dancing, the children grasped the essence of repetitive pattern. Witness the creativity as students use mittens and socks to craft their unique patterns.

Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On the third Monday in January, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a champion of freedom, kindness, and peace for all. Our preschoolers created a “Colors of Us” collage, featuring hands of various skin tones, symbolizing unity. In our classroom, acts of kindness are recognized with praise and certificates.

Clothing Study Adventure

Upon returning to school, preschoolers embarked on a fascinating clothing study. Exploring attire across the four seasons and discovering their origins (from cotton to animals), students showcased artistic talents by drawing their partners’ outfits. Practical lessons included washing and drying play clothes, understanding historical washing methods, and even having a hat parade with diverse headwear, from winter hats to beekeeper hats. To wrap up, the children engaged in a creative quilt-making project with the guidance of Ms. Rita.

PRESCHOOL - KINDERGARTEN NEWS Pre-Kindergarten Students Embrace Lessons on Equality Both Pre-K A and Pre-K B came together to celebrate and honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his birthday. The classes delved into the story that describes Dr. King’s life, his remarkable accomplishments, and his profound beliefs. Through this exploration, students learned valuable lessons about kindness, extending a helping hand, and the importance of equality. To visually express these concepts, the students engaged in a craft titled “I Have a Dream....” where they wrote and discussed their individual dreams and the steps needed to achieve them. The crafted pieces turned out beautifully and are proudly displayed in our Pre-K Hallway. As a final touch to this meaningful celebration, both classes watched Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream Speech,” creating an engaging and enlightening experience for all.

PRESCHOOL - KINDERGARTEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWSNEWS Bees that can spell! On the memorable day of January 8th, the spotlight was on the remarkable talents of our 1st and 2nd-grade students as they took part in a friendly and exciting Spelling Bee competition. Among the impressive pool of 60 students in these grades, four outstanding finalists emerged: Mason Biggos, Niya Jithin, Avi Shah, and Mishka Modh. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation and excitement as these young spellers showcased their linguistic prowess in the competition. It's worth noting that making it to the finals among such a competitive group is an achievement in itself, reflecting the dedication and hard work of all participants. At the culmination of the Spelling Bee, there was a sense of pride for each contestant, as their efforts were truly commendable. However, the title of Spelling Bee Champion was ultimately claimed by Mason Biggos, a talented 1st-grade student. The entire school community congratulates Mason for his exceptional spelling skills and applauds all participants for their enthusiasm and commitment to learning. This friendly competition not only showcased the linguistic abilities of our young learners but also fostered a supportive and encouraging environment for academic excellence. The Cedar Hill Prep community looks forward to witnessing more achievements and successes from these bright students in the future.

Super Students Shamit: Shamit’s exemplary demeanor towards teachers and peers sets a high standard in our classroom. Consistently respectful and focused, he actively engages in-class activities and completes his work with diligence. Known for his insightful questions and meticulous attention to detail, Shamit not only participates actively but also fosters a culture of respect among his classmates. Beyond academics, he finds joy in drawing and gymnastics, showcasing his diverse talents and interests. Nikhil: Nikhil brightens our classroom with his enthusiasm for reading and writing. A diligent student, he utilizes his time effectively by promptly engaging in assignments and contributing thoughtfully to class discussions. Nikhil’s perseverance in overcoming challenges reflects his commitment to learning, paving the way for future successes. With his commendable work ethic and genuine passion for knowledge, Nikhil is poised for remarkable achievements ahead. Akhil: Akhil’s dedication to academic excellence is evident through his relentless hard work and eagerness to learn. Fearless in his pursuit of knowledge, he embraces mistakes as opportunities for growth and actively seeks clarification when needed. His friendly demeanor and respectful attitude towards peers and teachers create a positive learning environment for all. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS Mystery Readers Galore! Third graders had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Satyajit Menon, Arjun’s dad, as a mystery reader. He shared the inspiring book ‘Kid Innovators’, which delves into the childhoods of renowned inventors and innovators. The book beautifully illustrates that brilliance doesn’t just happen overnight—these individuals started as children with ingenious ideas, persistently experimenting until they achieved greatness. It emphasizes that kids are just as amazing as adults. ‘Kid Innovators’ showcases diverse thinkers in technology, education, business, science, art, and entertainment, highlighting that every innovator once started as a kid. The students thoroughly enjoyed the moving, funny, and true childhood biographies, thanking Mr. Menon for sharing this brilliant book with them! Third graders had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Anil Vennavalli, Sreeniya’s dad, as a mystery reader. He took the students on an adventurous journey with the classic tale ‘Gulliver’s Travels.’ The story follows English surgeon Lemuel Gulliver, who, after a shipwreck, finds himself on the island of Lilliput where everyone is under six inches tall. Stranded on the island, Gulliver encounters the little inhabitants, making for a captivating blend of a comic novel and travelogue with hilarious and comedic themes. The students were enthralled by Mr. Vennavalli’s animated and humorous reading style. A big thank you for being a wonderful part of our classroom and bringing the magic of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ to life! Third graders were delighted to welcome Ms. Khadijah Grant, Carter’s Mom, as a mystery reader. She enchanted us with her reading of ‘Stop and Smell the Cookies,’ a wonderful book about emotions. The story follows Dash, who sometimes feels so excited that his chest warms, his toes dance, and his fingertips tingle with anticipation. When this happens, Dash finds it hard to control his actions, often leading to trouble. Fortunately, with a little guidance, Dash learns to slow down when overwhelmed by big emotions. This joyous book introduces a clever technique to engage the imagination and calm the mind, making it perfect for those, like Dash, who are impulsive, those who tend to suppress their feelings, and everyone in between. The animated and expressive reading by Ms. Khadijah Grant captivated our third graders. Thank you for sharing this delightful story with us!

Thermometer Activity! Thermometers serve numerous purposes in our daily lives! From monitoring classroom temperatures to aiding in culinary endeavors, these devices are indispensable. In our recent investigation, third graders delved into the world of temperature measurement. They observed and recorded the temperatures of three distinct containers: one containing room-temperature water, another with warm water, and the third with ice water. Using both Celsius and Fahrenheit scales, students compared and contrasted temperature readings, gaining insights into temperature conversion. Notably, they observed how prolonged exposure affected the temperature dynamics between the containers, particularly noting the gradual convergence between room temperature and the initially warm water. Charting their findings meticulously, students documented their observations in their science journals, fostering a deeper understanding of thermodynamics and measurement.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS January 2024 was a busy month for Grade 4! When we returned from Winter Break, two Grade 4 students participated in the CHP school-wide Spelling Bee for grades 3 – 8. Congratulations to Alexa and Allison D’Souza for their amazing participation in the Bee…competing for 10 rounds against two 7th graders! Grade 4 students then participated in the International Academic Competitions Online Regional Qualifying Exams for the International Geography Bee, National History Bee, and National Science Bee. So many of our 4th graders have qualified to participate in at least one of these Bees at the Regional Final Competitions in March or April. Congratulations!!! Although the middle of January was full of news about midterms and snow days, we certainly made time for our traditional Grade 4 birthdays! During January, three Grade 4 students joined the doubledigit birthday club! Congratulations to Francesca, Cecilia, and Snigdha on the occasion of their 10th birthdays!!! Grade 4 students, their parents, and Mrs. Gadaleta surprised Mrs. Yurman on her birthday! (Thank you all for your kindness….and for making this such a special day!!!) When you pass by the Grade 4 classrooms, do take a moment to read the students’ Flurry of Wishes for the new year. To our CHP Community….Grade 4 wishes all a joyous and peaceful New Year!!!

Exciting Achievements at the Future City Regional Competition! We are thrilled to share the success of our Future City Regional Competition participants at Rutgers University. The challenge was no small feat – design a 100 percent electrified city utilizing futuristic technology and innovative materials for the year 2124, all grounded in real science and engineering. Despite facing real-life challenges, including students participating in Debate tournaments until December 3rd, a tight deadline for the competition essay on December 18th (while winter break began on December 15th, with many students traveling until January 5th), and the competition scheduled for January 13th – giving them just two weeks to build the model – our dedicated students showcased exceptional project management skills and applied engineering design principles. Their hard work and perseverance paid off with not one, but two awards! Team A received the "Most Futuristic Looking City" award, while Team B secured a commendable tenth place out of 47 models. The innovative solutions presented by our teams included a combination of renewable energy sources, microgrids, super capacitors, piezoelectric crystals on road surfaces, and energy-storing bricks. These forward-thinking ideas truly exemplify the commitment to real-world science and engineering principles. Congratulations to our brilliant students for not only tackling the Future City challenge but also for demonstrating invaluable life skills such as endurance, resilience, and the capacity to work 12-hour days. We are immensely proud of their achievements and look forward to their continued success!

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Insight into the Future! On January 26, the Future City participants showcased their meticulously crafted models to an eager audience comprising students from grades 3 to 8. As each participant took the floor to present their visionary creations, a palpable sense of awe permeated the room, captivating the attention of all who were present. The sheer ingenuity and creativity displayed in the models left the audience spellbound, igniting a spark of curiosity and wonder among the spectators. Amidst the presentations, the inquisitive minds of the students came alive with a barrage of insightful questions, probing the intricacies and innovations embedded within each model. From inquiries about sustainable infrastructure to queries about futuristic technologies, the students delved deep into the realms of imagination and possibility, eager to unravel the mysteries of the Future City designs. For many of the young attendees, this immersive experience served as a gateway to the captivating world of engineering and urban planning. Through firsthand exposure to the Future City competition, they were not only inspired by the boundless potential of human innovation but also introduced to the profound impact that science and technology can have on shaping the cities of tomorrow. As educators and mentors, witnessing the enthusiasm and engagement of our students fills us with immense pride and optimism for the future. MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Samarth Secures Gold in IAC Regional Science Bee, Headed to National Finals! We are overjoyed to share the fantastic news that one of our brilliant 5th graders, Samarth Dakhera, has clinched the gold medal at the IAC Regional Finals of the Science Bee! This outstanding accomplishment reflects Samarth’s dedication to the world of science and inquiry. Samarth’s triumph at the regional level has paved the way for him to advance to the National Finals in sunny Orlando, Florida, this May. This is a testament to his exceptional talent and passion for scientific exploration. Join us in extending our heartfelt congratulations to Samarth for this remarkable achievement. We are confident that his journey to the National Finals will be filled with continued excellence and inspiration. Best of luck, Samarth!

Empowering Sustainability The Green Team has experienced a surge in participation this year! We’re thrilled to be engaged in several exciting projects, including the installation of a water bottle refill station, establishing a watershed on campus, implementing composting initiatives, and various other eco-friendly endeavors! Did you know that New Jersey is home to 350 native pollinators? That’s right! These pollinators, often solitary, seek refuge in hollow stems from plants during the winter months. To enrich their habitat, the Green Team initiated a fascinating project: crafting mason bee hotels out of bamboo and strategically hanging them in our certified meadow garden. This endeavor aims to support native pollinators while enhancing the biodiversity of our school’s ecosystem. The bee hotels provide a welcoming sanctuary for these essential creatures. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with students on sustainable projects like these, fostering awareness of the critical importance of nature conservancy. Together, we strive to cultivate a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship and its profound impact on our planet’s wellbeing.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Connecting with Nature Each session at the NJIN farm trip for 5th and 6th graders starts with a simple meditation, as depicted in the photos where students have their eyes closed. This practice helps them ground themselves and become more present in the natural world around them. Following the meditation, we delved into the concept of artifacts and discussed how the items we use today will eventually become artifacts in the future. We then embarked on a fascinating exploration of tessellations around the farm. Tessellations, characterized by a closely repeated arrangement of shapes, were found in various forms, from tire tracks in the mud to patterns on the silo! Students documented their discoveries by sketching the tessellations in their journals and composing acrostic poems to describe them. Overall, it was a truly wonderful day filled with exploration and creativity.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Celebrating Winter Wonder: Exploring Science and Adventure at NJIN On January 24th, the 7th and 8th grade students of CHP were treated to an enriching excursion to NJIN, which offered a delightful blend of recreation and learning. Against the picturesque backdrop of freshly fallen snow, the students indulged in the timeless joy of sledding, followed by the cozy warmth of hot chocolate shared amongst friends. Amidst the laughter and camaraderie, Mr. Deisher, seizing the teachable moment, sparked engaging discussions with the 8th graders about the intricate forces at play during sledding adventures, delving into concepts such as friction and gravity. Meanwhile, the 7th graders embraced their role as keen observers of nature, exploring the stages of ecological succession unfolding on the hillside. Through careful observation, they discerned the evolving dynamics of flora species, meticulously noting the prevalence of red cedar and dogbane as indicators of ecological change. In this dynamic blend of outdoor recreation and scientific inquiry, students reveled in the joys of winter and deepened their understanding of the natural world surrounding them.

WILDCATS SPORTS Unstoppable Basketball Team! The Cedar Hill Prep Boys Basketball team enjoyed a successful month of January, showcasing the true essence of teamwork and dedication. Each player contributed significantly to the team’s collective effort, demonstrating their commitment both on and off the court. In basketball, where collaboration is paramount, our players embody the spirit of unity by offering encouragement and positive reinforcement, even during moments of adversity. Whether on the sidelines or in the midst of game play, our team members uplift one another with supportive remarks like, “Next one’s going in,” fostering a culture of resilience and mutual support. Reflecting on our performance in January, the team achieved an impressive record of 4 wins against two losses. Victories were secured against formidable opponents including Winfield, Wardlaw Hartridge (twice), and Princeton Day School. Presently, the team is riding a commendable 3-game winning streak, bringing our overall record to 5-3 with two remaining games on the horizon.

Growth, Grace, and Victory: Celebrating the Girls Basketball Team Throughout January, the girls’ basketball team exhibited consistent improvement. Witnessing them seamlessly integrate practiced concepts into their game play has been truly inspiring. Notably, we’ve received commendations from opposing coaches and parents regarding our team’s exceptional work ethic and determination on the court – a victory in itself. In addition, we celebrated a milestone as we secured our first win against Stuart School. What’s most gratifying is witnessing the girls handle victory with the same grace and sportsmanship as they do defeat, a testament to their character and integrity. We are proud of this team’s resilience and class both on and off the court!

SPECIALS Unlocking Cultural Horizons On January 12, five outstanding students achieved an incredible feat – they earned a coveted spot in the prestigious La Sociedad Hispánica de Amistad, the middle school wing of the Hispanic Honor Society. These language virtuosos met the rigorous criteria set by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, boasting a stellar minimum overall GPA of 88%, a dazzling GPA in Spanish of 92%, and demonstrating exceptional service to school, community, and a fervent ambassadorship for the Spanish language. Get ready for the grand event – the official induction awaits them at CHP’s upcoming annual candle-lighting ceremony later this year. In the meantime, they’ve already pledged their commitment, joining the existing 18 members. This dynamic group takes the lead in orchestrating vibrant Spanish cultural community activities, not only enriching Cedar Hill Prep but also leaving a positive impact on the global Hispanic and Latin American communities. A round of applause for Saisha Manglani, Afzaal Mohamed, Eli Bakenroth, Makayla Pensack, and Ayaan Yussouf! Let the celebration of language excellence begin!” On January 12, Cedar Hill Prep hosted an Induction Ceremony for the “Jeunes amis du Français” at which Samaira Doshi, Valentina Garcia, and Aarnaa Desai were newly inducted. These students have successfully met the criteria for membership in the FHS, which operates under the auspices of the American Association of Teachers of French and the Société Honoraire de Français (SHF). Chartered by the American Association of Teachers of French, it functions in a manner similar to the French Honor Society.

The primary objective of this organization is to kindle an interest in the study of French, uphold high standards of scholarship, foster enthusiasm, and promote an understanding of Francophone cultures. Additionally, it encourages members to actively engage in service to both the school and the community.

ART Preschoolers Light Up Their Creativity This past week in our art class, the preschoolers embarked on an exciting journey into the world of creativity as they learned the intricate art of making paper lanterns. Guided by their curiosity and imagination, each student enthusiastically personalized their lantern, infusing it with their unique flair and personality. The classroom was soon adorned with an array of vibrant and meticulously crafted lanterns, each one a testament to the boundless creativity and budding talent of our young artists. With every snip of the scissors and every dab of glue, they explored the fundamentals of craftsmanship and attention to detail, laying the foundation for future artistic endeavors. Beyond the joy of creating beautiful artwork, our preschoolers eagerly embraced the cultural significance of their creations as they prepared for the upcoming Lunar New Year festivities in February.

Exploring Artistry Across Grades Grade 5 students are currently engaged in creating optical illusions inspired by the artwork of Bridget Riley. These pieces employ pencil and permanent markers to craft black and white or color checkerboard patterns, aiming to captivate and “trick the eyes”. Meanwhile, third graders are immersed in the creation of vibrant crayon-resist drawings featuring tigers in lush jungle settings. Guided through step-by-step instructions, they skillfully utilize bright orange, black, and white hues for the majestic felines, while incorporating shades of green to depict the verdant foliage. To achieve a captivating semi-abstract effect, a final layer of liquid blue watercolors is delicately applied over the crayons. In the advent of the second trimester, fourth-grade students embarked on shaded drawings portraying snowmen nestled amidst mountainous landscapes adorned with pine trees, heralding the arrival of winter. Employing soft pencils, they meticulously explored concepts of value and form to bring these wintry scenes to life.

AROUND THE SCHOOL Making Memories of a Lifetime! Family Fun Night at CHP is a cherished tradition that brings together families, faculty, and students for an evening of joyous camaraderie and entertainment. This year’s event was no exception, as laughter echoed across campus amidst games, performances, and delightful conversations. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the teachers’ karaoke session, where they showcased their hidden talents and belted out their favorite tunes, much to the delight of the audience. As the night unfolded, new friendships were forged, and bonds strengthened, embodying the true spirit of community at CHP. In January, students relished another delightful session of “Pizza with the Principal.” Gathered around slices of cheesy goodness, they engaged in lively conversations with Mr. Seeley, sharing anecdotes of snowy adventures and the thrill of sledding escapades. Amidst the warmth of camaraderie, discussions also delved into mid-term performances and upcoming school events, fostering a sense of community and connection.
