Dinosaur Discovery

Preschoolers dove into the world of dinosaurs through storytelling and hands-on play with plastic dinosaurs. They learned that dinosaurs are extinct and no longer roam the earth. After reading Fossils Tell of Long Ago by Aliki, the children were inspired to make their very own fossils! As a group, we followed step-by-step directions to create dinosaur fossils. Each child rolled magic model clay into a ball, flattened it out, and pressed a small dinosaur into it to leave an imprint. The clay was then placed in a warmer to dry overnight.

Groundhog Day

February 2nd is Groundhog Day! If the groundhog sees his shadow, there are six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, spring is just around the corner. After reading Wake Up, Groundhog, the children were on the edge of their seats waiting to find out — would he see his shadow or not?

Black History Month: Celebrating Great Americans

Our preschoolers celebrated Black History Month by presenting projects on famous African Americans. The children came to school dressed as the person they chose to represent and created a poster about their famous inventor, athlete, scientist, or celebrity — with a little help from their parents. Each child proudly shared their project with their classmates, stepping into the shoes of their famous person and explaining why they are remembered.

Valentine’s Day: Spreading Love and Kindness

Valentine’s Day was celebrated with extra love and kindness in preschool! The children dressed in Valentine’s colors and created “Love Bug” cards to express their love for their parents. Each child also brought special cards for their classmates and delivered them into individual Valentine bags.

Presidents’ Day: Learning About Leadership

For Presidents’ Day, we read books about leaders and learned that the President is the leader of our country and is responsible for making important decisions. The children also created a fun craft to celebrate the day.

PRESCHOOL - KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Dental Health Week: Brush, Brush, Brush!

Brush, brush, brush your teeth, brush them twice a day! — those were the words chanted by our preschoolers this week! The children learned the importance of keeping their teeth healthy through brushing, flossing, and making smart food choices. We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Bindra, Rayna’s mom, who visited our classroom to give a wonderful dental hygiene lesson. She demonstrated the proper way to brush and floss and explained why healthy habits matter. The children also learned which foods help keep teeth clean and which ones to avoid.

Building Study: Our IB Unit of Inquiry

We recently concluded our Building Study as part of our IB Unit of Inquiry — and what a journey it was! Throughout this unit, children explored the concept of shelter and investigated how buildings are designed to meet people’s needs. They discovered different types of structures, the tools builders use, and the materials required to create strong and stable buildings.

Through inquiry and hands-on exploration, students developed a deeper understanding of how the properties of materials affect the strength and stability of a structure. They asked questions, tested ideas, and reflected on what makes a building sturdy and safe.

During our culminating activity, children worked collaboratively in building centers. One group constructed tall buildings with Legos, exploring balance and stability. Another designed a castle using soft foam blocks, thinking carefully about structure and form. A third group created long tube structures, experimenting with length, connection, and support. Throughout this unit, students demonstrated key IB Learner Profile attributes — they were Thinkers as they solved building challenges, Communicators as they shared ideas with peers, Risk-takers as they tested new designs, and Collaborators as they worked together to bring their projects to life. We are so proud of how our preschoolers applied their learning through creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. This unit beautifully reinforced that buildings are carefully planned and constructed to serve a purpose and meet human needs.

Little Hearts, Big Lessons

In our preschool classrooms, the day begins a little differently — and that’s thanks to Ms. Platty Patel. Through the Heartfulness program she brings to CHP, our youngest learners start each day with a moment of stillness — breathing, centering, and simply being present. Ms. Platty Patel weaves meditation and socialemotional learning into the fabric of daily life, giving children tools to understand their feelings, connect with others, and approach the world with calm confidence. It’s never too early to learn how to lead from the heart.

Celebrating Black History Month in PreK

This February, our PreK students embarked on a wonderful journey through history — meeting some of the remarkable men and women whose courage, creativity, and determination helped shape the world we live in today.

Through stories, conversations, and hands-on activities, our little learners discovered that even the biggest changes in history often started with one brave person deciding to make a difference.

It was a beautiful reminder that learning about the past is one of the best ways to inspire the future.

Love Was in the Air in PreK!

Our PreK classroom was bursting with sweetness this Valentine’s Day! Dressed head to toe in every shade of red, our little ones came ready to celebrate — and celebrate they did. From exchanging handmade valentines to sharing goodies with their friends, the day was filled with giggles, sugar, and so much heart.

It’s moments like these that remind us why community and connection are at the core of everything we do at CHP.

Fasching Fun in Pre-K!

A huge thank you to Mrs. Shah (mom of Jamie) and Mrs. Salas (mom of Victoria) for bringing a truly special experience to our Pre-K classroom!

Claudia arrived dressed as a colorful clown, delighting students with balloons, stories, and a wonderful introduction to Fasching — the vibrant German carnival celebration. Together, both moms brought this joyful cultural tradition to life, sparking curiosity, laughter and wonder in every little learner in the room. This visit was a beautiful example of the IB value of intercultural understanding in action. Through their generosity and enthusiasm, our youngest learners had the opportunity to explore a tradition from another part of the world and develop a genuine appreciation for how different communities celebrate and connect. Thank you Mrs. Shah and Mrs. Salas — our Pre-K friends are still talking about it!

Celebrating Lunar New Year in Pre-K!

Our Pre-K classroom was filled with wonder and excitement as we welcomed two very special guests — Mrs. Chakkula (Anaira’s mom) and Mr. Filzer (Mia’s dad) — who brought the cherished traditions of Lunar New Year to life in the most beautiful way. Through stories, cultural artifacts, and heartfelt sharing, our youngest learners were introduced to one of the world’s most celebrated and beloved traditions. Little eyes were wide with wonder as they discovered the rich customs, symbolism and joy that make Lunar New Year so meaningful to millions of people around the world. A heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Chakkula and Mr. Filzer for so generously sharing their culture, their pride and their time with our Pre-K family. You reminded all of us that the greatest lessons often come straight from the heart.

Kindergarten Cupids

Valentine’s Day in Kindergarten is truly something else. Our five and six year olds showed up dressed in their brightest reds and pinks, arms full of goodies and hearts full of excitement, ready to shower their classmates with love. Cards were exchanged, treats were shared, and the classroom buzzed with the kind of pure, unfiltered joy that only little kids can bring to a holiday. Some friendships were made over a conversation heart. We’re not surprised — that’s just how Kindergarten works.

The World Came to Kindergarten

Our Kindergartners welcomed the Lunar New Year with lanterns, traditions, and stories passed down through generations — brought to life by the families who carry them. But here’s what made all of it truly special — none of it came from a textbook. It came from families walking through our doors and sharing a piece of their world, their heritage, and their heart with a room full of curious, wide-eyed children. This is what global citizenship looks like at Cedar Hill Prep. Not just a concept in a curriculum — but a lived, felt, celebrated experience.

Ask a Kindergartner Who Rosa Parks Is. Go Ahead. We Dare You.

This Living History Month, our youngest learners dove deep into the stories of changemakers who shaped our world — and came out with portraits, facts, and a whole lot of heart. The future remembers.

The Art of the Valentine Box

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS

Stickers, valentine boxes, and the very serious business of decorating — Grade 1 was fully in their element this Valentine’s Day. Before a single card could be exchanged, these little ones made sure every box was perfectly personalized, every sticker placed just right.

The concentration, the excitement, the occasional sneaky smile — this photo says it all. Big feelings, bigger hearts. That’s Grade 1 for you.

A Lesson in Generosity — Taught by a Six Year Old

In Grade 1, something remarkable happened. One of our own students stood before his class and taught them about Ramadan — sharing a story, explaining its meaning, and leading his peers through a hands-on activity decorating jars to collect donations for those in need.

At 6 years old, he didn’t just share a tradition. He modeled empathy, generosity, and the kind of leadership we hope to nurture in every child at Cedar Hill Prep.

This is the beauty of a diverse community — when children feel seen and celebrated, they rise. And when they rise, they bring everyone with them.

Ramadan Mubarak from the CHP family.

A wall full of colorful heart artwork that every single student had a hand in creating. It’s the kind of day that feels simple on the surface but says something deeper — this is a class that genuinely cares about each other. And honestly, that’s the best valentine of all.

Stories, Art & the Spirit of Ramadan in Grade 3

Mystery Reader: Mr. Param Palani

We were thrilled to welcome Nidhi’s dad, Mr. Param Palani, as our Mystery Reader! Mr. Palani brought the story of a true American hero to life by reading Dream March — an inspiring biography about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights movement, and the historic March on Washington. Through his animated and engaging reading, our Third Graders learned about one of the greatest civil rights leaders of all time. Set against Dr. King’s historic march on Washington in the summer of 1963, the book’s powerful storytelling and stunning illustrations brought this landmark moment in American history to life in the classroom. Mr. Palani also sparked a lively discussion afterward, asking thoughtful questions that the students enthusiastically answered. Thank you, Mr. Palani, for sharing such an inspiring story with us!

Mystery Reader: Ms. Neha Bhandari

We were delighted to welcome Inaaya’s mom, Ms. Neha Bhandari, as our Mystery Reader! Ms. Bhandari whisked our students away on a magical adventure with A Faraway Tree Adventure: The Land of Toys by Enid Blyton. In this enchanting story, Joe, Beth, Frannie, and cousin Rick climb the Faraway Tree and discover the Land of Toys — where teddy bears, dolls, and clockwork toys run around all day long! When the beloved Saucepan Man gets thrown in prison by toy soldiers, the children must race to rescue him before it’s too late. The Magic Faraway Tree series has been capturing children’s imaginations for over 80 years, and it was wonderful to see our students transported into the Enchanted Wood alongside Silky, Moon-Face, and all their friends. Thank you, Ms. Bhandari, for bringing this timeless classic to life for our students!

Mystery Reader: Ms. Jennifer Sandidge

We wrapped up February with a wonderful visit from Samantha and Dean’s mom, Ms. Jennifer Sandidge, as our final Mystery Reader of the month! Ms. Sandidge read a story from Super Great Kids’ Stories, a collection curated by Kim Normanton featuring stories from the beloved storytelling podcast of the same name. The Sandidge family are big fans — Dean, Samantha, and Jennifer listen to the podcast together on their drives to and from school, which made this reading extra special! The story she chose was a Nigerian folk tale called Why the Sky is Far Away — a beautiful tale with a powerful message about the dangers of greed and the importance of living in harmony with nature. Thank you, Ms. Sandidge, for sharing such a meaningful and culturally rich story with our class. It is always a joy when parents step into our classroom and bring their favorite books to life for our students!

February in Grade 4

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS

Service-Learning Experience

During the first week of February, Grade 4 students had an opportunity to deliver to the Pine Grove School the 75 Weekender Bags they had assembled at the end of January. The Principal welcomed us, expressing much appreciation for the students’ kindness and generosity. He then guided us to the cafeteria, where the students were able to place the Weekender Bags, and then took us on a brief tour of the school.

Upon our return to CHP, each Grade 4 student expressed how wonderful they felt to have had such an experience, one where they were able to help others in the larger community. Thank you to our Grade 4 parents! Your generosity helped us to achieve our goal!

Living History Presentations in Honor of Black American Inventors

Throughout the month, Grade 4 students have been working on their Living History presentations in honor of Black American Inventors. In preparation for the event, the students learned to do online research, collect and organize data, document their research, and write a speech to inform…in the 1st person! Their “museum” displays include creatively crafted trifolds and artifacts that reflect the inventors’ accomplishments. In addition, the students have been learning some public speaking techniques and wrote Bio Poems of their subjects (which they have proudly displayed on the hallway bulletin board). As the students completed their projects, they had an opportunity to reflect upon their work throughout this process. The consensus was that this project showed them how much their learning and independence has developed since September! Congratulations Grade 4! Due to our two snow days, the Living History Programs for Grades 1 – 4 have been rescheduled for March 5th. A special thank-you to our Grade 4 families for their assistance with this month-long project! We look forward to seeing you on March 5th!

Lakota Nation and The Great Plains

Our Grade 4 students have been diving into the rich history and geography of the Great Plains as part of their learning about the Lakota Nation. After researching the land, climate, wildlife, and natural resources of the Great Plains, students explored how the environment shaped the Lakota people’s way of life, including their homes, food sources, traditions, and culture. To showcase their learning, students created detailed and colorful posters that highlight key facts about the region and its connection to the Lakota Nation. Their work demonstrates thoughtful research, creativity, and a growing understanding of how geography influences culture. We are so proud of their curiosity, teamwork, and the care they are putting into representing their learning in meaningful ways!

Shedding Light on Energy: Grade 8 Launches Unit on Light Waves

This week, our Grade 8 students kicked off an exciting new unit exploring the science of light waves, anchored by the key concept that light carries energy that causes materials to change.

Students dove straight into inquiry through two hands-on activities. In the first, they directed a flashlight onto a liquid crystal sheet and observed it shift colors in real time. In the second, they aimed a flashlight at a solar-powered toy and watched it spring to life. To further investigate the energy carried by light, students also compared temperatures on two thermometers — one placed under a light bulb and one away from it — drawing their own conclusions from the data in front of them.

Beyond the experiments, students mapped the key concept, related concepts, and global context, and collaboratively developed their Statement of Inquiry. To close the class, partners worked together to craft factual, conceptual, and debatable questions — a true demonstration of the IB Learner Profile attribute of Inquirer in action.

Houston, We Have Liftoff! Grade 6 Takes on a Lunar Expedition

On February 12th, Grade 6 science students launched into an unforgettable STEM experience — landing on the moon! In honor of Artemis II, their lunar expedition was officially underway.

Students began with a STEM challenge to engineer a landing rover capable of navigating the soft, dusty surface of the moon. After testing their designs and refining their builds, our young engineers found a sure winner. Next, our astronauts suited up and got to work — conducting experiments on moon rocks, exploring the behavior of water in space, examining the effects of zero gravity on the human body, and even repairing a life-saving module inside their capsule.

Meanwhile, back at Mission Control, students collected and analyzed incoming capsule data, communicating in real time with their counterparts beyond Earth's atmosphere. This experience was truly out of this world.

Our Staff Has Heart — Literally

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for the students at CHP. Our incredible staff showed up dressed in their finest reds and pinks, proving that school spirit and a little holiday fun have no age limit. From the gym to the classrooms, the whole building felt the love — and honestly, seeing the people who pour their hearts into this school every single day take a moment to celebrate together? That’s the real valentine. We are so grateful for this team.

Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler! CHP Celebrates MARDI GRAS

Our campus was full of color and culture decorated by grade 6 honor society, as we celebrated Mardi Gras! The festivities began with an engaging presentation by our Grade 8 French Honor Society, highlighting the history and traditions of the Francophone world.

Students then enjoyed a fun Kahoot challenge created by grade 7 French honor society, an

energetic House competition, and a lively parade to our Lower School classrooms. This celebration reflected the IB Global Context: Personal and Cultural Expression and brought the Learner Profile to life — students were Communicators, Open-Minded, Thinkers, and Caring leaders throughout the event. Bravo to all who made it unforgettable!

Grade 8 Takes French to the Table

Our Grade 8 students brought their MYP Language Acquisition unit to life with a visit to Café Paris, where they experienced authentic French cuisine firsthand. It was a wonderful opportunity to practice their language skills in a real-world setting while immersing themselves in francophone culture — the way IB learning is meant to happen. From the menu to the conversation, every moment was a lesson. Bon appétit, Grade 8!

WILDCATS SPORTS

Wildcats Boys Basketball — A Season to Remember

This winter, our Boys Basketball team showed up ready — and they didn’t disappoint. The highlight of the season came with a big win over WardlawHartridge, a victory that had the whole CHP community buzzing and reminded everyone what these young athletes are capable of when they play together.

Throughout the season, the Wildcats brought energy, resilience, and heart to every single game. The growth we’ve seen — on the court and off — speaks to the dedication of each player and the steady, committed leadership of Coach Saad, who has pushed this team to be their best all season long. We couldn’t be prouder of what this group has built. Here’s to finishing strong, Wildcats.

Wildcats on the Court — Heart on Full Display

February brought some serious energy to CHP athletics. Our Girls Basketball team faced off against Wilberforce in a hard-fought game that had everyone on their feet — and as part of our first-ever doubleheader, the excitement in that gym was unlike anything we’ve seen before. Win or lose, watching our Wildcats compete with that kind of grit, teamwork, and determination makes us incredibly proud.

A huge thank you to Coach Nolan, whose dedication and belief in these athletes shows every single time they step on the court.

And if that wasn’t enough — halftime brought a moment nobody will forget. Our CHP Cheerleaders made their debut performance, bringing a whole new level of excitement to our winter athletics program. Coached by the wonderful Ms. Julie Haynoski, these young performers absolutely owned that moment.

This is what CHP athletics looks like. All heart, all the way.

Spotlight on the IB Learner Profile: Inquirers in Action!

Our 8th graders embodied the spirit of inquiry this month, asking the kinds of questions that true scientists live for — What happens to a liquid crystal sheet when light passes through it? What does a flashlight reveal about a flower? With curiosity as their guide, students dove hands-on into the science of light and matter, discovering that the best learning always begins with a great question.

Stepping Into History: Grade 6 Takes on Newsies

Grade 6's Musical of Study is Newsies — the historical fiction story of the Newsboys' Strike of the late 1800s, explored through the Key Concept of Change and the Global Context of Fairness and Development. Throughout this unit, students examine how young people have historically challenged inequality and driven social change. By developing their understanding of related concepts — including narrative, expression, and role — students explore how performance communicates powerful messages about justice born out of collective action.

The photo captures students actively learning choreography from the Broadway production as they step into the Newsies' shoes to deepen their understanding of the given circumstances, one pirouette at a time.

IB Spotlight: Little Inquirers, Big Ideas

Did you know that our Grade 2 learners are already thinking like scientists? Walk into Ms. Marisela Turcios’ classroom on any given day, and you’ll find something remarkable — seven-year-olds wrestling with big questions, pencils moving, minds fully engaged. This week was no different. Even as the rest of the world was still recovering from the storm, learning at Cedar Hill Prep never skipped a beat.

The class has been deep in an exploration of changing landforms — investigating how wind, water, and time quietly reshape the earth beneath our feet. To help her students truly own the vocabulary behind these ideas, Ms. Turcios brought in the Frayer Model, a powerful thinking tool that pushes learners beyond simple definitions. Students weren’t just asked what a word means — they were asked to show what it looks like, what it doesn’t look like, and how it connects to the world around them. That’s not memorization. That’s understanding. And the work speaks for itself. Students drew and captioned diagrams showing how a nearby cliff eroded overnight — explaining in their own words that “the wind and water caused the cliff to change.” They weren’t reciting facts. They were constructing knowledge, making meaning, and asking what they were still wondering about. That last part — what are you still wondering? — is reflective of the IB philosophy. It’s the mark of an inquirer, one of the most essential attributes of the IB learner profile, and it was alive and well in that Grade 2 classroom. At Cedar Hill Prep, this is what a regular Tuesday looks like.

Pizza with the Principal: February Edition

There’s something about good food and good conversation that brings out the best in people — and our latest Pizza with the Principal was no exception. Students gathered with Mr. Seeley for a slice and a chat, and with spring break just around the corner, the excitement was hard to miss. Plans were shared, laughs were had, and somewhere between slices, a few good ideas made their way into the conversation too. Mr. Seeley loves these moments, and honestly, so do the students. It’s a simple tradition that says something important: every voice at CHP matters, and every student deserves to be heard.
