There’s No Debate About This! The Debate Team of CHP emerged as the second-highest scoring team in the Garden State Debate League, which took place in the first week of December. This achievement is noteworthy because we had fewer participants than the team that secured first place and the team we tied with. The Garden State Debate League kicked off the season with the first debate at Stone Bridge Middle School. Forty-nine teams and 144 speakers participated in the debate. The four topics of contention were: (1) Cultural Artifacts should be returned to their country of origin. (2) School attendance should be voluntary (3) Americans should be required to provide one year of National Service. (4) Organ donation should be compulsory for all U.S. Residents Cedar Hill Prep School was represented by 10 teams - four teams from Grade 8, two teams from Grade 7, one team of Grade 6 and 7 students, and three teams from Grade 6. PRESCHOOL - KINDERGARTEN NEWS
All About Trees
We continued our investigation of trees by creating bird’s nests. The children used items they found on our tree scavenger hunt and worked together in small groups to build their nests. They used pom poms to represent the eggs. We also learned that birds need to eat during the winter months, so we made small bird feeders by threading fruit loops onto pipe cleaners. We hung them onto the tree branches and will watch every day to see if the birds like them. The final week of our Tree Study was held during the first week of December. The children were taught about the appearance of trees in all four seasons, the vegetation that grows on them, the living creatures that inhabit trees, and the various products that can be created from them. The children gathered around our table to decorate four large tree branches, representing each of the four seasons. We had a great time gluing leaves, flowers, fruits, and animals onto the branches.
Hanukkah
During our Hanukkah week, the preschoolers learned about the festival of lights. They learned that the menorah candles are lit for eight nights and about a game played with a spinning top called a dreidel. The children had a fun time playing the dreidel game. For a craft, they painted a beautiful blue menorah out of a paper plate and used popsicle sticks for the candles. The best part of the week was eating potato latkes and applesauce.
Celebrating Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is a seven-day festival that celebrates AfricanAmerican culture and history. During Kwanzaa, a special candle holder called a kinara is used that holds seven candles - three red ones on the left, three green ones on the right, and a black candle in the center. Each night, a candle is lit to mark the occasion. Our preschool class learned about this holiday by reading stories and coloring a paper candle using the Kwanzaa colors. Additionally, corn was included to represent the number of children in the family.
Merry Christmas from Preschoolers!
During the last week of school, we celebrated Christmas by organizing various activities for the children. They sang songs and created a hand-printed mitten wreath. Additionally, we held an ugly sweater contest where the children were given a paper sweater to decorate with different craft items. Finally, we wrapped up our holiday party with fun games and treats. www.cedarhillprep.com | 3

Cozy Celebration in Pre-Kindergarten Classrooms The Pre-Kindergarten classes enjoyed learning about the different holidays celebrated in December. We read stories on Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Christmas and talked about how they are all considered festivals of lights and celebrated with family and friends. Our students also worked hard in making crafts showcasing the dreidels, different patterned Christmas trees, Kwanzaa mats, and wreaths. Their beautiful work is displayed in our hallway. We ended our last week before winter recess with a Pajama Party in class. The little munchkins came clad in comfy PJs and their stuffed toys tagged along too! We enjoyed all the yummy snacks as we watched one of the most famous winter tales - Frosty the Snowman. To add to the fun, we made hot cocoa! The kids had a wonderful time and ended the last day with a beautiful ornament decoration activity.
A Ride Filled with Magic and Toys! The Kindergarten children at Cedar Hill Prep took their first Magic Carpet Ride of the holiday season to Germany and Turkey to see how children celebrate St. Nicholas Day. They imagined children placing their polished shoes outside of classrooms in hopes that St. Nicholas would visit with gifts of candy and toys. The children wrote about this exciting journey in their Kindergarten passports. The Cedar Hill Prep Kindergarten students also celebrated St. Nicholas Day by placing their shoes in the hallway in hopes that St. Nicholas would visit them as well. The children were thrilled to find candy and toys in their shoes, and nobody received coal! They also colored a picture of St. Nicholas to mark the occasion.

PRESCHOOL--KINDERGARTEN KINDERGARTENNEWS NEWS PRESCHOOL Here We Come, North Pole! We visited traditions surrounding Hanukkah and St. Lucia on the magic carpet, and this time we visited the most magical place in December - the North Pole! We learned all about Christmas! We saw Christmas carolers singing traditional songs around the neighborhood. We also saw Santa’s workshop while his elves were packing gifts and we were in awe of the bright lights on Christmas trees. It was joyful to see people celebrating with gifts, games, and delicious food! We enjoyed writing about this memorable trip in our passports!
Of Potato Latkes and Menorahs! The Kindergarten children went on their second Magic Carpet Ride, using their imaginations to visualize the Jewish Celebration of Lights, the Hanukkah celebration in Israel. They saw beautifully lit Menorahs, gifts for every night of Hanukkah, children playing the Dreidel Game, families gathering and enjoying Potato Latkes, and much more. Afterward, they wrote about their experience in their Kindergarten Passports and illustrated it. Everyone enjoyed eating potato latkes and applesauce, and they read The First Book of Chanukah. The children also started making dreidels by coloring, cutting, and gluing them together. Happy Hanukkah!
A trip to Sweden! As part of our Holidays Around the World program, our most recent adventure took us on a Magic Carpet Ride to Sweden to experience St. Lucia Day. The festival is celebrated on December 13th, and it marks the beginning of the Christmas season. The name Lucia means light, and she is believed to bring light to the darkness. On this day, the children make their own crowns with candles and leaves, while dressed in white with a red sash. In the early morning, St. Lucia wakes up her family and serves them breakfast. The children proudly wear their crowns throughout the day. They also get a chance to color a picture of St. Lucia and stamp their passports as they learn about this Swedish tradition. To top it all off, the children enjoyed a delicious breakfast Danish. It was a fun and memorable day! www.cedarhillprep.com | 5

Wintery Day at NJIN First-graders enjoyed a snowy day at NJIN! We went on a scavenger hunt, read ‘The Great Kapok Tree’, and wrote a letter to Mankind from the perspective of an animal who is worried about the destruction of their homes. The children enjoyed spending time outside and catching snow on their tongues! Students also added to their farm journals describing one of their favorite scenes from our nature walk. The students described the beauty of the snow, creek, trees, and animal homes.
Mastering the Art of Writing The second-grade students have been actively participating in the writing process. They had the opportunity to read the story of William’s Winter Wish and then proceeded to draft some of their wishes for this winter season. The students brainstormed a few ideas about what they wished for this winter, drafted sentences, learned how to edit and revise their work, and finally, wrote their final copy. After finishing their final drafts, the students used them to write on ornaments now adorning the hallways, spreading peace, love, and warm wishes all around!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS Lessons on Empathy, Acceptance, and Courage Mr. Shrey Patel, Onir’s father, was invited as a mystery reader by third graders who welcomed him warmly. During his visit, he read the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio to the students. The book tells the story of August Pullman, a boy born with a facial difference that has prevented him from attending a mainstream school until he starts fifth grade at Beecher Prep. Although he wants to be treated as an ordinary kid, his new classmates struggle to get past his extraordinary face. The book highlights the importance of empathy, compassion, and acceptance in a world where bullying among young people is a growing concern. R.J. Palacio, the author of the book, has described it as “a meditation on kindness.” Every third-grade reader was moved by the simple courage of friendship displayed in the book. Auggie, the main character, is a hero who proves that you can›t blend in when you were born to stand out. The students thanked Mr. Patel for reading this beautiful book to them and appreciated his efforts towards promoting kindness, compassion, and acceptance.
Making Reading FUN! Third graders welcomed, Ms. Saujanya, Mythili’s mom as a mystery reader. She read We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins. Penelope Rex has one fear: Walter, the class goldfish. So when Mrs. Noodleman tells the kids that they’ll be taking turns bringing Walter home, Penelope gets carried away by her anxious imagination. The weekend has a rocky start—from Walter ominously licking his lips to a sleepless night where the fish’s bowl appears to move closer and closer to Penelope›s bed. But then Walter goes missing! Penelope must face her fear to find him and realizes along the way that there›s more to Walter than his chomping jaws. The students loved the animated reading by Mythili›s mom and had a wonderful afternoon listening to her read to us. Thank you for coming and reading to us!
Promises and Smiles in Third Grade! Third grade welcomed Ms. Saima Thaver, Nyle’s mom as a mystery reader. She read two wonderful books to us. The first book was ‘I PROMISE’ a book that motivates children everywhere to always #StriveForGreatness. It is a lively and inspiring picture book that reminds us that tomorrow’s success starts with the promises we make to ourselves and our community today. Featuring James LeBron’s upbeat, rhyming text and vibrant illustrations perfectly crafted for a diverse audience by #1 New York Times bestselling and Geisel Honor-winning artist Nina Mata, this book has the power to inspire all children and families to be their best. The second book that she read was ‘When I Smile’ a picture book about all the things a smile can do. One girl discusses the power of a smile and the many different smiles she gives to those around her throughout the day. There are soft, sleepy smiles that greet a new day; goofy smiles with her best friend; and even playful, supportive smiles, which help her sister when she’s feeling down. With charming text and bright full-color illustrations, this story shows the power and gift of a smile. The students loved the message that both books conveyed and we thank Ms. Saima Thaver for reading to us!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS Feel-Good Book Reading Time! Third-grade students were excited to welcome Ms. Shilpa Ramjee, who is Sanam’s mother. She read a book titled ‘The Light Within You’ - a celebration of family love and the light that we share with the world. Diya, one of the students, was thrilled to be going to India for Diwali, the Festival of Lights. She was looking forward to spending time with her beloved grandma, Nani, whom she hadn’t seen since her family moved from India. The students thoroughly enjoyed Sanam’s mom’s animated reading and loved the book. They expressed their gratitude for her visit and for reading to them.
Festive Winter Sweaters Third graders took great pride in coloring their Christmas ornaments. From the classic to the truly unique, the Christmas ornament made the bulletin board the star of the show this holiday season. This project reflected the creativity of the third graders. They also had a decorate your ‘Festive Christmas Sweater’ contest. The students chose from one of the patterns and worked like fashion designers to come up with their version of festive Christmas sweaters! They enjoyed working on this activity. A team of judges voted on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The winners earned points for their houses. Congratulations to all the participants for enthusiastically decorating the sweaters! Great job, third graders!
Magnetic Lesson Third graders made electromagnets in Science and planned and conducted an investigation related to it. Magnets that use electricity to produce a magnetic force are called electromagnets. The students wrapped about 10 cm of wire around a bolt. They attached each end of the wire to a battery holder by connecting it to the metal piece at each end. Then they placed a battery in the holder. They tested their electromagnet by bringing a pile of paper clips near it. They counted the number of paper clips the electromagnet could hold. They then recorded their observation. They predicted what would happen if the wire was wrapped around 25 times and then performed the experiment and noted their observations. They analyzed and interpreted the data collected and concluded that more paper clips were attracted to the electromagnet.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS Wonder Students of Third Grade Agastya passionately identifies as an avid reader with an insatiable appetite for books. Among his favorites are the enchanting tales of Harry Potter, the whimsical adventures of Captain Underpants, and the delightful escapades found in Dog Man books. If given the chance to take center stage in any cinematic masterpiece, he envisions himself donning the iconic persona of Spider-Man. Beyond his literary and cinematic preferences, Agastya harbors a commendable aspiration— to play a pivotal role in combating littering and contribute to creating a cleaner, more sustainable environment. Snehal proudly identifies as a formidable mathematician, displaying a keen prowess for all things math-related. During his leisure moments, he finds joy in engaging in video game sessions with friends, immersing himself in the virtual realms of camaraderie. Beyond the world of numbers and pixels, Snehal nurtures two diverse passions—playing the piano, where he crafts melodic tunes, and showcasing his skills on the soccer field. However, his ambitions extend beyond personal pursuits. At the core of Snehal’s aspirations is a noble goal—to champion the cause of world peace and foster harmonious relationships among people. He envisions a global landscape where unity prevails, and the spirit of cooperation binds individuals together for a more peaceful and connected world.
Holly-Jolly Christmas Party Third graders had a lot of fun at their holiday party. They made crafts like snowflakes, snowmen, bracelets and necklaces. They enjoyed goodies like popcorn, hot chocolate cookies, cupcakes, and grapes. It was a “sweet” start to the holiday season. They watched ‘Polar Express’ with their friends as a great culmination to the year 2023. On behalf of all our amazing students in third grade, we wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS Grade 4’s Bustling December! On Dec. 8, Grade 4 held their annual Class Spelling Bee. After a recordsetting number of rounds, a tie was declared! Congratulations to Alexa and Allison for winning the Grade 4 Spelling Bee! We wish the girls the very best as they prepare to participate in the CHP school-wide Spelling Bee on January 8! Grade 4’s published authors in the National Young Authors’ Fair continued to share their original stories with their classmates. Thank you Aarush, Arnav, Dylan, Geetha, Indigo, Isra, Mahalakshmi, Siyana, Vallabh, and Viraj for delighting us with your creativity and storytelling!
Grade 4 students ushered in winter and the holiday season as they created holiday crafts for their families and snowflakes of their wishes for the New Year. In keeping with our annual Grade 4 tradition, the students visited the Kindergarten to read Twas the Night Before Christmas to their younger friends. Throughout our December activities, there was a level of excitement as CHP’s favorite elf mysteriously appeared around campus creating all types of mischief! Thank you Mr. Seeley! You have certainly created lasting memories for our community!!!
On the last day of classes before Winter Break, Grade 4 held its annual Holiday Party/Pajama Day, an especially cozy event as we enjoyed hot chocolate and cookie decorating in snuggly pajamas, and then cozied up on the floor to watch “Polar Express.” By evening, everyone’s wardrobe changed as the children dressed in their finest for the Holiday Winter Concert. Once again, the annual CHP Winter Concert received accolades! Congratulations Ms. Joyce, Grade 4, and Grades 5 – 8! The performances were outstanding! This busy day was a wonderful way to round out the end to our classes in 2023! THANK YOU to all of our families who contributed goodies for our Grade 4 Holiday Party! MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Warmth in a Cup! A group of fifth-grade students set up a hot chocolate stand at the middle school building. They offered a warm cup of delicious hot cocoa to everyone to celebrate the beginning of winter break. It was a perfect way to end the last day of school before the winter recess!
Green Team is Back in Action! The Green Team has been meeting at the middle school on Wednesdays for the past three years. During this time, we have taken several initiatives with our small yet enthusiastic group. Last year, we created a sustainability action plan for the schoolyard habitat. Additionally, we earned numerous levels of certifications for schoolyard sustainability. Notably, we received the River Friendly Silver Certification and the New Jersey Audubon EcoSchools Schoolyard Habitat Bronze Certification. One of our successful initiatives was creating a National Wildlife Federation-certified wildlife habitat in the fenced-in raised bed garden area by planting milkweed, lavender, and other native wildflower seeds. We invite you to visit the wildflower meadow this spring and witness the native pollinators in action! Did you know that there are 350 pollinators native to New Jersey? That’s right! They are usually solitary and live in hollow stems from plants in the winter. To enhance their habitat, the Green Team embarked on an exciting project where they crafted mason bee hotels out of bamboo and strategically hung them up in the certified meadow garden. This initiative aimed to support native pollinators while enhancing the biodiversity of our school’s ecosystem. The bee hotels provided a cozy haven for these essential creatures.

May the best Gingerbread House Win! The winter season wouldn’t be complete without the famous CHP Gingerbread House Competition! This year, all four houses showcased their imaginative and creative skills to craft some stunning Gingerbread Houses. Colorful candies and sparkly icing that resembled snow, lined the cookie sheets, as students put together their Gingerbread Houses. It was an absolute delight to watch! Each House came up with creative lyrics inspired by Christmas carols for the House Cheer. These competitions definitely bring a sense of team spirit and camaraderie.
WILDCATS SPORTS Welcome back, Coach Tierney! The whole school and staff members at CHP were thrilled to have Ms. Tierney back after her basketball injury. Coach Tierney received the warmest welcome from all her Lil’ Cats, with big smiles and warm hugs. We are immensely grateful for her tireless dedication and hard work with the athletics department!

CHP GIRLS BASKETBALL Team Pepped up for a Great Basketball Season! The CHP Pep Rally is one event that never fails to raise our adrenaline! The girls’ and boys’ Basketball teams initiated the season with yet another unforgettable pep rally on December 5, 2023. Chip, the school mascot, was present at the gymnasium, cheering alongside the lower school students. The event was even more special because it marked the return of Coach Tierney after a minor game injury. The youngest students welcomed her back with great enthusiasm, showing how much she was missed! Loud chants echoed throughout the hall as the little ones clapped and high-fived their favorite players. CHP’s Pep Rallies perfectly demonstrate the importance of team spirit and resilience. We can’t wait to see what the Basketball season has in store for us!
Victorious start to CHP’s Basketball Season! The boys’ basketball team of CHP had a promising start in December. They worked hard on improving the basics of the game such as pick and roll and “give and go”. On December 5th, they played their first match against Pingry at home. Despite gaining energy from the pep rally, they couldn’t secure a win that day. Two days later, they traveled to take on Princeton Charter. It was an intense game with multiple lead changes throughout. The match went into overtime, and CHP emerged victorious with Mason Parker’s spectacular performance scoring 17 points, including the winning 3-point shot.
Confidence is Key! The girls’ basketball team has made significant progress in both tangible skills and intangible qualities. Not only have their basketball skills improved, but also their confidence and competitive spirit. At the beginning of the season, they were hesitant and uncertain, to the point where they did not want to participate in the game. However, by the end of the second game, they were all eager to join in. Although we lost both games, they put in a tremendous effort and fought hard. Coach Nolan is very proud of their dedication and is looking forward to more training sessions and games in 2024! Basketball Schedule

SPECIALS CHP’s Enthralling Holiday Sing All the students from preschool through 8th grade put on a stunning performance that captivated the audience. The Annual Holiday Sing creates a festive atmosphere in the school, with choir sounds echoing through the corridors as students rehearse with music teachers Ms. Joyce and Ms. Flo. This year, the staff had a surprise musical performance in store for us, which included Mr. Mac! They performed “Winter Wonderland,” much to the delight of the crowd. The musical evening included songs like “Five Little Snowmen,” “Just One Candle,” “Hanukkah Oh Hanukkah,” and “Holly Jolly Christmas.” We hope you all enjoyed the concert and look forward to performing at next year’s Holiday Sing! ART Artful Snowflakes! In December, the lower school art classes prepared for the start of the winter season by filling the classroom with hundreds of handmade paper snowflakes! The students had an amazing time working on their cutting skills and hand-eye coordination. They worked very hard and created snowflakes as beautiful and unique as they are!
Feliz Navidad! At the Holiday Bazaar, the melodious performance by the students from grades 1 and 2 caught everyone’s attention. They sang Feliz Navidad and Jingle Bells in Spanish, which was quite impressive. Ms. Soto and Ms. Flo put in a lot of effort to train the students for this special performance dedicated to all the CHP families! The children wore Santa hats and jingled their wrist bells as they sang the two most famous holiday songs. With this amazing performance, we are all set for an exciting holiday season!

AROUND THE SCHOOL Spreading some Magic and Cheer Winter at CHP is a season that is often associated with festive scenes, such as frosty mornings, warm classrooms, corridor walls decorated with holiday artwork, and this year, the cherry on top was the visitor from the North Pole - Elf on the Shelf! On Monday, students, parents, and staff were surprised to find an elf perched on the rooftop of the school as they arrived in the parking lot. Throughout the week, the charming elf was seen in different spots on the campus, including lockers, preschool classrooms, and even on the school bus. On Thursday, the last day of school before winter break, Santa’s helper was seen roasting marshmallows in the parking lot. The magical elf quickly became the talk of not just CHP, but the entire town, and was even featured in local news channels. It was a joyful and jolly way to end the last week of school before the winter break. Let’s wait and see what our magical elf has in store for us next Holiday Season!

AROUND THE SCHOOL The Mystery of the Elf From the North Pole No month is complete without the much-loved tradition of Pizza with the Principal! Even though we had a short month before winter recess, Mr. Seeley ensured the event was planned. In December’s Pizza with the Principal event, Mr. Seeley dressed up as an Elf visiting from the North Pole. From preschoolers to fourth graders, the first question on their minds was whether Mr. Seeley was the Elf! The selected students were excited to talk about their winter break plans and other interesting topics with the superhero of CHP! We look forward to seeing you all for a brand new season of Pizza with the Principal in the New Year!
