MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT AND CEO The silent foundation of legacy There is a quiet rhythm to life in a well-loved senior living community. It’s the hum of the HVAC systems, the smooth glide of the elevator that takes you to your next destination, or the warm glow of LED lights that illuminate the library or lounge where you read your morning paper.

For decades, these systems have worked silently in the background, allowing you to focus on what truly matters in our community: your friends, your hobbies, your family, and your peace of mind.

But as our buildings age, that silence is often broken by different sounds: the creak of aging pipes, the flicker of outdated wiring, and the subtle, creeping realization that the walls surrounding you are reaching the end of their story. It is tempting to think, “The building still stands, the lights still turn on. Why fix what isn’t broken?”

Industry data suggests that waiting is far more costly than acting.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average lifespan of major building systems—including HVAC, roofing, and plumbing—is between 15 and 25 years. In the case of Cedar Community, most buildings date back to the 1970s and 80s, meaning that much of our critical infrastructure has hit the absolute limit of its useful life.

The financial impact of delaying updates is staggering. A study by the U.S. Green Building Council found that deferred maintenance costs can escalate by four to 10 percent annually due to inflation and the compounding effects of deferred damage. A minor roof leak that costs $5,000 to fix today can balloon into a $50,000 structural repair within five years if water damage spreads to insulation, drywall, and electrical systems.

Furthermore, shifting demographics in senior living have changed the math entirely. With the oldest Baby Boomers now in their seventies, the demand for modern, accessible living is surging. Real estate firms McKinsey & Company and JLL have repeatedly warned that when a building’s design or technology no longer meets market expectations, it leads to a permanent loss of market share. In a competitive landscape, failing to upgrade doesn’t just mean lower occupancy; it means becoming the “last resort” option, which drives down the community’s long-term financial viability.

Perhaps the most invisible, yet most expensive, challenge is the technology infrastructure. In 2026, a senior living community is no longer just a building; it is a connected ecosystem. The expectation is for high-speed Wi-Fi in every room, smart technology, streaming services, telemedicine capabilities, and secure digital communications.

But the technology required to support this is not static. It evolves rapidly, demanding constant reinvestment.

Unlike a brick wall that lasts for decades, network infrastructure has a life cycle of roughly five to seven years. To keep pace with

security standards and speed requirements, a community must refresh its servers, routers, and wiring every five years. And today’s technology demands high security, as outdated systems are vulnerable. A single cyber incident targeting an aging network can cost hundreds of thousands in remediation and legal fees, or millions in ransom, while eroding the trust of residents and their families.

Nonprofit communities face a unique paradox. When a building ages, the cost to keep it running skyrockets. If the community doesn’t reinvest now, the financial hole grows deeper.

Eventually, the only options left are drastic cuts in services, a decline in the quality of care, or, in the worst-case scenario, the closure of the doors entirely.

Cedar Community is deeply committed to reinvesting in our buildings, our campuses, our technology, and our people. While it may not all be visible, Cedar Community has reinvested more than $75 million back into our buildings and services across all three Washington County campuses since 2017. However, our work isn’t finished. Over the next three to five years, we will continue to invest between $25 million to $35 million more on several key projects that will impact everyone, including: · New roofs for The Aspen at Cedar Lake and The Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center. · New boilers and chillers for the Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center. · Completion of two new deep wells and wellhouse on the Cedar Lake Campus. · Replacement of the sprinkler system at Cedar Ridge Apartments. · Resurfacing of all roads and parking lots on all campuses. · Refurbishment of all elevators on all campuses. · Updating equipment in all kitchens. · Fire alarm system upgrades at The Aspen at Cedar Lake. · Replacing roofs on the Cedar Lake Village Homes.

This list does not include the day-to-day repairs and routine updates on other incidentals and amenities across campuses, nor the annual $1.5 million we invest in ongoing renovations.

These investments don’t just make things look better; they ensure the safety of our community, the stability of our future as an organization, and the ability to recruit and retain the team members who are so critical to our programs and services for the residents. If a community chooses not to modernize its facilities or its technology infrastructure, it creates a vicious cycle: outdated facilities can drive away staff, leading to higher turnover costs, which leaves less money for supplies and care, ultimately lowering the quality of life for residents.

While buildings and technology are critical, the true heartbeat of senior living is the people who support and care for the residents. I am proud Cedar Community is blessed with team members who have and continue to serve with care, compassion, diligence, and excellence—in buildings of all ages!

Reflecting on recent years, the challenges we have met head-on and the decisions we have made to support these critical infrastructure improvements have required difficult conversations, careful planning, thoughtful financial investments, and a shared commitment to the long term.

We know our residents are not here for the buildings, but for the community, lifestyle, care, and culture we enjoy through our nonprofit mission. Through these responsibilities, we are continuing a legacy. Like any legacy worth preserving, it requires care, attention, and the courage to invest in the future.

RESIDENT PROFILE BY: Gladys Sachse Resident, Cedar Community Independent Living

MEET RAE SANDERS Rae Sanders was born and raised in Appleton, Wis., along with her brother and sister. Her family enjoyed camping, hiking, and canoeing, and this strong commitment to the outdoors remains. During high school, she was an AFS foreign exchange student and lived in Uruguay during the summer of 1965. After high school, she attended Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Madison and ultimately became a registered nurse.

She chose to work at Mendota State Hospital as a psychiatric nurse on the adolescent unit. She later joined the Mendota nursing education department and taught student nurses.

In 1974, she moved to Sheboygan to work at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital as assistant director of nursing. When the hospital joined Aurora Health Care in 1992, she became a regional vice president of marketing and business development. She worked in healthcare her entire life, except for three years in corporate banking.

For her 50th birthday, she went to Alaska by herself to explore. Rae drove 2,000 miles throughout Alaska during her vacation to better acquaint herself with the state. She liked it so much that she returned the following summer for another vacation. Wanting a new challenge, she moved to Alaska in the winter of 1999, settling in Anchorage. Rae was hired by Providence Health Center and became the director of marketing and training for Providence Alaska Medical Center. She met her future husband, Paul, who was a family practice physician and the medical director at Providence Seward Medical Center.

After two years, they moved to Sturgeon Bay, Wis., where Rae again joined Aurora Health Care in a new position as director of provider relations. After three years of missing Alaska, Rae and Paul returned to “The Last Frontier” and settled in Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula. She worked at Central Peninsula Counseling Services and was responsible for marketing and community relations. She continued in that role when it merged with Cottonwood Health Center, and the two clinics became Peninsula Community Health Services of Alaska.

Five years later, they moved to Wausau to be closer to grandchildren in the Lower 48. Rae could not find meaningful professional opportunities, so she retired. After Paul was diagnosed with a serious health condition and retired, they moved to Howards Grove in 2016.

Twenty years after they married, Paul passed away in 2022.

Rae has one son, Ross, who lives in Sheboygan with his wife, granddaughter, and grandson. Her first great-granddaughter was born in 2026, and she also has three stepchildren and four stepgrandchildren who reside in Oregon and Washington.

Rae has visited 43 U.S. states, Mexico, several Caribbean countries, and multiple provinces in Canada. She always enjoyed music and played the piano, organ, flute, and piccolo through high school and as a young adult. Following graduation from nursing school, she played in the Madison City Band for a few years. The height of her musical enjoyment was joining four Sheboygan friends when they formed a rock-and-roll band in 1985 called “Malpractice” that played a few times a year for charity fundraisers until Rae moved to Alaska. Rae played keyboard and said she had a blast!

During the decade before moving to Alaska in 1999, she embarked on “Rae’s Excellent Adventures,” which included a backroad hiking and camping trip in the the Banff area of the Canadian Rockies. She did

whitewater rafting in Utah with Outward Bound. She attended Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where she, along with other students, experienced simulated missions and astronaut training.

This spurred her desire to experience Aviation Challenge at the same training site, which introduced Rae to Top Gun flight simulators. This continued with her experiencing Sky Warriors outside of Atlanta, where Rae, along with other students and retired Air Force and Navy pilots, flew T-34 trainers simulating dogfights in the sky. Her assessment: “It takes nerves of steel with ice in the veins” for these pilots. An attraction to speed led her to her next adventure— a day-long Indy car racing course at Road America. She took one of her “tamer” adventures to a dude ranch in Colorado, horseback riding for a week in the Rockies. And she experienced dog mushing with Alaskan Huskies in northern Minnesota before she even thought of moving to Alaska!

Four years after Paul’s death, Rae no longer wanted the responsibility of maintaining a home and finding appropriate help for maintenance and repairs. She sought out Jim Williams, whom she had known since 1978, and they worked together in Sheboygan. He was director of operations at Cedar Community for 20 years later in his career. Besides doing a lot of research, she talked with friends in senior services, along with Jim, about what to look for in a senior community. Cedar Community offered a continuum of care, which was important to her, and home maintenance. Rae moved to Cedar Community in February 2026. She knew she made the right choice as she enjoys the walking trails, array of services, activities, performances, and volunteer opportunities, as well as the friendly, caring staff and the residents. She’s looking forward to pontoon boat rides and kayaking on Big Cedar Lake this summer.

Rae played the flute 40 years ago. She took a few lessons in West Bend and has now joined “The Little Big Band.” Life is full of adventures. Who knows what is next?

TIME, TALENTS, TREASURES

THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY AND TRADITIONS Every Wednesday, Mary Stodola’s apartment at the Cedar Ridge Campus is filled with laughter as Mary’s siblings Bob, Joe, Liz, and Katie, along with Katie’s husband, Jim, gather for lunch, conversation, and memories. This weekly tradition has become a treasured opportunity for the Baldus family—one that reflects the importance of family and staying connected through every stage of life.

For nearly 23 years, Mary has called Cedar Community home. She and her late husband, Bob, moved to the Cedar Ridge Campus after deciding it was the right place for their next chapter. Today, Cedar Community continues to be at the center of family life—not only for Mary, but for her brother Joe, who moved to Cedar Ridge about five years after Mary. Joe originally became familiar with Cedar Community through an uncle who had once lived there. That uncle’s son now also lives at the Cedar Ridge Campus. Joe now lives at The Cottages, Cedar Community’s memory care neighborhood, so Bob picks him up every week before heading to Mary’s home.

They travel from Brookfield, Thiensville, and Sheboygan Falls. Each family member treasures the weekly lunches, as they have been able to reconnect after years spent raising their own families and managing busy lives. “It means more every week because it’s so great that we can still do it,” Katie shared. “Four of the seven siblings are now in their 90s, and we treasure this time together.” The siblings range in age from 83 to 96. Joe, 96, described the gatherings simply as “the greatest privilege I could imagine.

It’s fantastic that we’re all alive,” he laughs. “And it’s fantastic that we’re all friends.”

The Baldus family has always been close. They grew up in Whitefish Bay in what they jokingly describe as “the smallest house with the biggest family.” They attended the same Catholic school alongside numerous cousins. Many memories were made despite crowded bathrooms, bedrooms, and even shared beds. As expected in a large family, there were also plenty of sibling squabbles growing up. “We did a lot of fighting when we were younger,” Mary laughed.

Today, the bond they share has only grown stronger, and they have plenty to talk about, considering there are almost 30 children between them, many grandchildren, and even some great-grandchildren.

Before the Wednesday lunch tradition began, the family hosted what they called “Sib Fest.”

This annual gathering that brought all seven siblings, and their spouses together began in the early 1990s. As the family grew—with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren spread across multiple states—the gatherings were a way to stay connected.

Today, the siblings gather around 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday, sharing stories about their children and grandchildren, reminiscing about old neighbors and childhood memories, and catching up on everyday life. “There are always memories,” Liz said. “The younger ones still get to hear stories from the older ones.” Bob added, “We talk about our families, the grandkids, and memories from our old neighborhood.”

They also enjoy conversations about their careers and experiences. Joe spent much of his career as a civil engineer specializing in hospital construction throughout southeastern Wisconsin. Bob was a mechanical engineer. Mary worked as a nurse in long-term care and nursing homes. Katie was a teacher, and Liz devoted many years to raising her four sons.

Sister Sue lives in New York and is a Maryknoll missionary nun, and brother Bill lives in Minnesota and was a doctor.

Meal preparation duties are shared among the siblings—often sandwiches, casseroles, or dishes prepared at home and finished in Mary’s apartment kitchen. They usually eat by noon and wrap up by 1:30 p.m.

The welcoming atmosphere at Cedar Community has also been a positive experience for the siblings who come to visit. “The people here are just so friendly,” Katie shared. “Every time we come, everyone seems so happy to be here. It feels like a good place.” Bob and Katie and her husband Jim are currently on the waitlist for an independent living apartment. Jim shared, to Katie’s surprise, that he hopes to be moving into an apartment this month.

The family also appreciates the support Cedar Community offers residents through life’s changes. After Joe lost his vision about 10 years ago, Mary and the family rallied around him, helping him navigate day-to-day until his move to The Cottages. With the help of transportation services between campuses, Mary can visit Joe every week.

Even after decades of family gatherings, the siblings never run out of things to talk about, and they deeply appreciate the moments they share. Their story serves as a wonderful reminder to cherish the time we have and stay connected to the people who matter most.

For Mary and Joe, Cedar Community has become more than just a place to live. It is a place where family traditions continue, treasured friendships are formed, and meaningful moments are shared. That is why so many residents often say, “Cedar Community feels like family.”

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT

From recycled bags comes purpose and connection On Monday mornings, as many as 11–12 women gather around tables in the Bistro at the Cedar Ridge Campus to flatten, cut, and knot plastic grocery bags. They call themselves the “Bag Ladies,” and they’re doing more than recycling old grocery bags. They’re supporting people experiencing homelessness—one plastic bag at a time— through the organization, Mr. Bob’s Under the Bridge.

Jean Gorman has lived in Cedar Community’s independent living for about three and a half years.

“I knew someday I was going to live here,” she says.

In fact, Jean previously worked as an occupational therapist at Cedar Community for 10 years during the days of Rev. Riesch, the organization’s founder and first executive director.

Jean has always had a passion for helping others and is a self-described “volunteer queen,” having spent more than two decades working with organizations like the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and at her parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Her work has often involved visiting individuals and families in need—sometimes in their homes, sometimes in more uncertain conditions. “We go in pairs,” she explains. “If someone needs help with rent, clothing, or utilities, we visit and figure out what we can do. People are just so grateful.”

That same volunteer spirit led Jean to a project that is making a meaningful difference— creating sleeping mats for people experiencing homelessness using recycled plastic bags.

From bags to beds The idea came after hearing a presentation from Bob Burmeister, founder and president of Mr. Bob’s Under the Bridge, who spoke about his work supporting people experiencing homelessness. Once homeless himself at 19, Bob now runs an organization that distributes essential items, including portable shower units.

Inspired by his message, Jean and fellow resident Marilyn Brath decided to help. Together, they began making plastic bag mats—and before long, others joined them.

The process begins with Marilyn, who jokingly calls herself the “dumpster diver,” as she gathers recycled plastic bags from local stores—with permission, of course. “Fortunately, we haven’t run into too many surprises in those plastic bags,” laughs Marilyn. “Maybe a little grease, but that’s it.”

Additional bags are collected from neighbors. Each one is flattened, cut into strips—about two and a half inches wide—using a rotary cutter, and looped together to create long strands of plastic yarn.

Those strands are rolled into balls and crocheted into durable mats.

Each plastic mat measures roughly three by six feet and requires between 800 and 900 plastic bags. “It sounds like a lot,” Jean says, “but once you get going, it adds up.” The mats are lightweight, waterproof, and provide insulation from the ground—giving people something dry to lie on.

“We’ve also heard bugs don’t like the plastic mats, so that’s a plus as well,” Jean adds.

A group effort The group meets weekly, typically drawing anywhere from a handful to about 10 residents. Some cut bags, others connect strips, and a few crochet. Everyone contributes in their own way and on their own schedule. Since January of this year, the group has produced more than 13 mats.

Marilyn especially values the camaraderie and social connection of the group. She, too, has a history of giving back and helping those in need—collecting and sending cards to local veterans and volunteering monthly at the Foster Closet.

Both Jean and Marilyn appreciate that they’re taking something that could be harmful to the environment and turning it into something useful and meaningful.

More than mats Volunteering their time to help others has also offered something valuable in return—connection. “There’s a lot of socializing,” Jean laughs. “People come down, they talk, they laugh—it matters.” The weekly gathering is a chance to meet neighbors, share stories, and feel part of something bigger.

“You find out you’re helping someone who doesn’t have anything,” Marilyn says. “That makes a difference.”

The group gladly accepts plastic grocery bag donations, which can be dropped off at the Cedar Ridge Campus reception desk, 113 Cedar Ridge Drive, West Bend. Please note: Sendik’s bags are too thick, and Woodman’s bags tend to disintegrate, so they cannot be used.

After 49 years of marriage, Alan and Jean Hilgeman are enjoying, exploring, and living their best lives between two senior living communities. Living at St. John’s on the Lake provides opportunities to stay active and involved in the city life of Milwaukee, while living at Cedar Community offers an escape to nature and what Alan describes as something similar to a state park.

Their story began in healthcare when they first met in the intensive care unit during Alan’s early training.

Alan spent more than three decades as a physician, primarily practicing in Menomonee Falls before retiring in 2015. Jean, a nurse, worked parttime while raising their children before retiring in her mid-50s.

Alan and Jean have been writing their joyful retirement chapter since 2020, when they moved from their Brookfield home—where they raised their two sons—to St. John’s on the Lake. They had also toured Cedar Community, but what they were looking for was not available at the time, and they didn’t want to wait. That changed when The Lofts at Cedar Lake offered the space and amenities that fit their needs— leading them to move into their second retirement community in April of 2024.

When Alan retired, it opened the door to travel and adventure. The couple purchased a motorhome and spent the next 10 years traveling.

“We traveled all over the United States—north, south, east, and west,” he says. “Every winter, we’d spend a couple of months along the Gulf Coast.

That became our winter home.”

Their love of adventure has always been part of their lives. From biking and hiking to Jean’s interest in showing Arabian horses and training Shelties, staying active has remained an important part of their lifestyle.

It is one of the reasons they chose Cedar Community as an additional living option. “We’ve always been bicyclists,” says Alan. Exploring the Eisenbahn Trail and Horicon Marsh trails are regular adventures for Alan and Jean.

A thoughtful transition When Alan and Jean were thinking about downsizing, they looked at smaller homes and condos, but nothing felt quite right. That’s when Alan considered a move to a retirement community. It was a thoughtful decision based on avoiding multiple moves over time and simplifying their transition. “We decided to downsize once instead of moving from one place to another every few years,” he explains.

Their connection to Cedar Community never faded.

Alan had been familiar with Cedar Community through former patients and had always heard positive things.

“I’ve known about Cedar Community for years,” he says.

“People always said great things about it.” When the opportunity arose to move into The Lofts at Cedar Lake, the decision felt right. “We always loved it out here,” Jean says. “We would come out just to walk and enjoy nature.

When The Lofts opened, it felt like it was meant to be.”

Two places, one lifestyle Today, the Hilgemans split their time between their home at Cedar Community and St. John’s on the Lake in downtown Milwaukee—embracing what they describe as the “best of both worlds.”

In the winter, they tend to spend more time downtown, and in the summer, they’re enjoying the trails, the lake, and the quiet adventure that Cedar Community offers. Their schedule is flexible, often decided by social plans, family visits, and activities, as to where they plan to stay each week. “We plan around what we have going on—friends, events, time with our grandkids,” Jean says.

The couple has eight grandchildren, ranging in age from five to 18, and they enjoy staying connected with family.

Life at Cedar Community At Cedar Community, nature plays an important role in the Hilgeman’s daily life. “We walk the trails almost every day,” Alan says. “The nature is just incredible.”

Evenings often end with a trip down to Big Cedar Lake to enjoy the sunset. “We’ll take our golf cart down to watch the sunset,” Jean says. “Whoever shows up, shows up”—referring to her neighbors. “It’s informal—but it’s my favorite time of day.”

They’ve also embraced opportunities to stay involved at Cedar Community. Alan volunteers with the grounds crew helping with outdoor projects, assisting with maple syruping, and driving the pontoon boat. Jean participates in fitness classes, knitting groups, and together they enjoy social gatherings. “It’s a nice mix of activities,” she says. “You can be as involved as you want to be.”

Connection, convenience, and community For Alan and Jean, one of the biggest benefits of community living is the freedom it provides. “It’s turnkey,” he explains. “If we want to leave, we just lock the door and go, and we know everything is taken care of.” That peace of mind has allowed them to continue traveling, including a recent trip to Costa Rica, while maintaining an active and social lifestyle.

They also appreciate the contrast between their two communities. “They’re completely different experiences,” Jean says. “Different people, different environments—but both are wonderful in their own ways.”

Life is an adventure for the Hilgemans. Whether they’re biking local trails, exploring nearby towns, gathering with friends, or spending time with family, they are embracing this chapter. “We feel lucky,” Alan says. “We get to experience two incredible communities in different ways.”

With the guidance of his estate trustee and family relative, Ben Schloemer, the Carl Ziegler Endowed Scholarship Fund was established to support Cedar Community team members in their educational and professional development pursuits. “I continue to be impressed by the thoughtfulness of the process and the exceptional strength of the candidates,” Schloemer says.

“I am proud to be a part of this process, and I found every applicant to be truly deserving.”

In May of this year, the third annual application process opened to Cedar Community team members who have been employed with the organization for at least 12 months.

He made an indelible impact on Cedar Community throughout his life. In his passing, he magnified that legacy with an incredibly generous gift from his estate.

CEDAR COMMUNITY AWARDS CARL ZIEGLER SCHOLARSHIPS

Kaylee Kratz is a certified nursing assistant at the Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center and will be attending the University of WisconsinEau Claire this fall. Her studies will focus on pre-medicine, majoring in biology with a minor in Spanish for health professionals. Her long-term goal is to become a physician specializing in endocrinology. Kaylee is enrolled in the BluGold Fellowship, which will allow her to begin facultystudent collaborative research during her freshman year. She says Cedar Community has not only strengthened her desire to pursue medicine but has also shaped the kind of physician she hopes to become.

Claire Willis is a certified nursing assistant at The Cottages at Cedar Run. She continues to work toward her undergraduate degree in kinesiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with plans to pursue a physician assistant degree. This path is deeply personal to her because she wants to expand her ability to care for others. Her role at Cedar Community has shown her that excellent care requires both skill and compassion. Claire deeply values the work she does and hopes to continue growing not only as a caregiver but also as a future PA who leads with empathy, serves with humility, and makes a meaningful impact on residents and coworkers alike.

Kaitlyn Wezyk is a certified nursing assistant currently pursuing an associate degree in nursing at Moraine Park Technical College. At Cedar Community, Kaitlyn has cared for residents in long-term care, rehabilitation, and restorative care programs. She is passionate about empowering residents to achieve their health goals through patient-centered care. This scholarship will allow Kaitlyn to focus on her nursing studies, expand her clinical knowledge, and continue delivering highquality care.

Elijah Van Beek graduated from Kewaskum High School in May and will attend Moraine Park Technical College this fall to pursue a nursing degree. He currently works as a certified nursing assistant and med tech at The Willows at Cedar Lake. Elijah is passionate about giving back to his community, including serving as a mentor for the Kewaskum Impact Crew (KIC) Program and Peer-to-Peers.

Throughout his time at Cedar Community, Elijah has learned how vital human connection is, and that care is not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Jamie Dutcher is a certified nursing assistant and med tech at The Cottages at Cedar Run. The opportunity to continue her education is important to her so she can learn more about not only the physical needs of residents, but also their emotional and psychological wellbeing. Jamie hopes to gain a stronger foundation in anatomy, physiology, and overall patient care, along with deeper critical-thinking and communication skills.

Emily McElhatton started at Cedar Community as a certified nursing assistant before transitioning into a human resources recruiter role.

With this scholarship, she hopes to gain knowledge in compliance and employment law while also expanding her skills in recruitment, policy development, and workplace safety.

Rebecca Naczek worked as a certified nursing assistant before moving into the role of nurse scheduler. Working in healthcare has strengthened her desire to grow professionally in the health information management field. Rebecca’s goal is to apply to the Health Information Technology program at Moraine Park Technical College this fall. The program will allow her to expand her technical knowledge, strengthen her understanding of healthcare systems and data management, and continue building her career path at Cedar Community.

Cedar Community is proud to announce that we have been recognized by Newsweek and global data intelligence firm Statista as one of America’s Best Nursing Homes for 2026.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, there are more than 15,000 Medicare- or Medicaid-certified nursing homes in the United States, serving roughly 1.2 million residents.

This year’s list recognizes the top 1,200 nursing homes across the United States.

Facilities were evaluated on four pillars— including performance data, peer recommendations, accreditations, and resident satisfaction—with performance data carrying an increased weight in 2026 to reflect the growing emphasis on clinical quality metrics.

Other updates this year include the addition of vaccination rates as new quality measures, the expansion of the ranking to cover 33 states across three size categories, and an increase in the total number of facilities recognized.

The result is a state-by-state list of nursing homes that stood out for their commitment to safety, quality of care, and resident wellbeing.

As you begin these conversations, remember to be gentle with yourself. It is completely normal to feel emotional or vulnerable. These are deeply personal topics, and there is no “perfect” way to talk about them.

Sometimes it can help to begin with simple, honest language. You might say: “I would like to have an important conversation with you. I know it may feel uncomfortable, but you are important to me, and I want you to understand my wishes now rather than waiting until there may come a time when I cannot communicate them myself.”

Not every conversation will go smoothly, and loved ones may struggle with what they hear. If someone disagrees with your choices, it can be helpful to remind them calmly: “You do not have to agree with my choices, but I do need you to respect them.”

Some family members may not feel ready to talk at all. In those moments, you can leave the door open without forcing the discussion: “I understand this may be difficult to talk about right now. Just know that I have completed my advance directive and made my wishes clear. I will make sure you know where to find it, and if you ever want to talk more about it, I am here.”

Choosing a power of attorney for healthcare can also create complicated emotions within families. If someone feels hurt or confused by your choice, reassurance and honesty can go a long way: “You are very important to me, and I love you dearly. I made this decision carefully. I chose someone whom I believe can carry out my wishes if needed, so you can focus on simply being my loved one rather than carrying the weight of those medical decisions.”

These conversations are not easy, but they are meaningful. By sharing your wishes clearly and compassionately, you are offering your loved ones guidance, clarity, and a lasting expression of care.

Growing goodness together Summer has a way of reminding us how connected we all are. Long days, warm evenings, and time spent outdoors help us slow down and notice what truly matters—our neighbors, our shared spaces, and the simple joy of being part of a caring community. And in every community, there are people whose generosity quietly makes life brighter. Some give boldly, some privately, some once, and some year after year. But no matter who (or how) you choose to support organizations or causes close to your heart—your generosity matters.

Giving for the right reasons is never about recognition. It’s about intention. It’s about aligning your generosity with what matters most to you—your values, your experiences, your hopes for the future. People give because they want to help. After all, they believe in community, perhaps because they’ve been touched by kindness and want to pass it on.

One longtime supporter in our community shared it best when she reflected on her own journey of giving: “I know what it’s like to grow up without a lot of money or resources, and that experience has shaped my entire life. Now, at 85 years young, I finally can help others—and what a gift that is. My grandfather, Oscar Schlegel, taught me everything I needed to know about giving back to the community, especially here in West Bend. He believed that when you have even a little to share, you share it.

I am honored and privileged to continue his legacy of supporting organizations like Cedar Community. My grandfather was one of the first donors to help the founders of the West Bend Company start their local business. As time passed and my mom and extended family became residents at Cedar Community, I saw firsthand, even as a child, how deeply Cedar Community valued caring for others who had less. Everyone was treated equally.

As a board emeriti and longtime supporter myself, it means so much to carry that forward. Giving across generations creates a beautiful ripple—one that continues long after we’re gone.
