EMBRACING CHANGE

A service of celebration honoring

Change is an inevitable part of life. It often arrives unannounced—disrupting routines and challenging comfort zones. My family and I recently moved into a new home, and while that is an exciting time, it also involves navigating a great deal of change. As I was in the middle of a mountain of boxes, I realized moving isn’t just about relocating your belongings—it’s about transforming your perspective.

The process of packing, downsizing, and purging can come with a whirlwind of emotions. Sorting through years of accumulated memories was both cathartic and bittersweet. Each item held a story—a photo frame from a family vacation, a chipped mug one of my children made (I still can’t bear to part with it), and board games that had remained untouched for years suddenly needed to be played again. Letting go of some of these pieces was difficult, but it was necessary to make room for the new spaces and new memories we would be making in our new home.

Change is not just about leaving things behind—it’s also about growth. It’s the chance to reinvent yourself, to embrace new opportunities, and to discover parts of life you never knew you were missing. Moving to a new home mirrors the changes we all face daily—big and small. Navigating unexpected challenges is life’s way of constantly nudging us to evolve—whether we like it or not!

Settling into my new home also brought fresh appreciation for the resilience we all carry within us. Each day feels a bit more comfortable, and a bit more like the new normal. I’m sure it is very similar to what many of our residents experience as they become part of our campus family for the first time or move to that next level of support. Thankfully, our Cedar Community team understands how challenging and emotional those changes can be, and they are always there to support and guide our new neighbors on that journey.

This move has been more than just a lot of work—it has been an important reminder for me that while change is sometimes daunting, it is an inevitable and enriching part of life.

And, as I sit in my living room, having my morning coffee in that chipped mug I can’t seem to part with, I’m filled with gratitude.

Gratitude for the new space and also gratitude for the courage to embrace the unknown.

After all, it is in these moments of transition that we discover who we truly are, and the journey on which we’re meant to be.

Here’s to a new year full of possibility and embracing change as an opportunity!

By now, the parties and celebrations have ended. The days are finally getting longer. You’ve packed away your holiday decorations and gifts and perhaps packed on some holiday pounds. The new year feels much the same to me. A time for reflection and renewal—both personal and professional. A future full of promise and opportunity—at work and at home.

January may be a quiet month compared to the festivities of November and December, but here at Cedar Community, there are still a lot of people, things, and gifts to celebrate!

Some highlights in this issue: ∙ Team member Joel Stiller joined the Cedar Community family this past year as manager of Top of the Ridge Restaurant. In a very short time, his time, talents, and treasures have made a significant impact on both his team and the residents and guests who grace his tables. Learn more about him and his journey of service, leadership, and culinary distinction. We are glad you are here, Joel! ∙ Independent living neighbor Lee Dougherty has traveled far and wide. A published author, teacher, and experienced buyer and seller of Arabian horses, Lee made the move to Cedar Community to be close to his children in 2024. Welcome home, Lee. Joel Stiller

A journey of service, leadership, and c

Joel Stiller, Top of the Ridge Restaurant manager, has had a dynamic career journey, from the restaurant and hospitality industry to the U.S. Army for educational opportunities, and back to hospitality. Joel began working in the restaurant industry as a busser when he was a teenager. He did that for two years and then joined the U.S. Army because he wanted a college education.

He was stationed in Germany and attended school for airframe and power plant—an aeronautics degree to work on helicopters and fix wing aircraft. He was in Germany when the Berlin Wall came down. His military role led him from Germany to special operations— serving in 17 countries. Upon his discharge, limited job options in his field led him to work as a supervisor for a drug company, coordinating driver routes for narcotic deliveries to drugstores.

Eventually, Joel returned to his high school restaurant job, but this time as a manager. Joel’s career continued to evolve, and he was later hired by Aramark Correctional Facilities as a district manager—overseeing 15 facilities in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois as well as other states across the country opening new facilities.

His background in food service and security was a good fit for the job as it leveraged his experience balancing food and labor costs, as well as compliance with state regulations. After 11 years, he opened his own restaurant in Fox Lake—a small 30-seater serving breakfast and lunch—but personal reasons led him to sell the restaurant.

Joel took some time for himself to figure out where life was going to take him when he received a call from Kalahari Resorts & Conventions in Wisconsin Dells— they were looking for a restaurant general manager. He managed restaurant financials, schedules, and menu development. Receiving an offer he couldn’t refuse, he left Kalahari after five years and went to neighboring Chula Vista Resort & Waterpark Hotel, overseeing three restaurants, a golf course, corporate hospitality training, and large-scale catering events—including one with over 5,000 attendees. “I was fortunate that my roles allowed me to collaborate and learn with top executive chefs,” says Joel.

After the hustle and bustle of high-intensity roles and 18-hour days, Joel was looking for more work-life balance and transitioned into healthcare—managing kitchens

and food programs for a senior care organization.

During COVID, he transitioned back to the restaurant industry as a kitchen manager, where he was focused on modernizing the menu and elevating the quality of food. When the job switched directions and added more front-of-the-house—along with long hours—he started looking for a better fit. He found it at Cedar Community’s Top of the Ridge Restaurant.

Cedar Community provided the work-life balance he was looking for and a pace he appreciates that allows him to use his talents and expertise. Joel’s day-to-day responsibilities include managing the front and back of the house, budgeting, pricing, catering coordination, staff training, and creating special event dining experiences.

He especially enjoys working alongside the chefs to create menus that enhance the dining experience.

Joel is dedicated to building a cohesive team and encourages cross-training among the staff to learn how the front and the back of the house work together to create a first-class restaurant experience. “This process fosters understanding and teamwork among the staff and allows them to do things they may have never done before, but excel at,” says Joel.

Joel’s leadership philosophy emphasizes continuous learning. “My goal is for everyone to walk away having learned something new. I always tell my team that this is a great place to work—regular work schedule and paycheck, home-life balance, no super-long hours, and flexibility.” Looking ahead, Joel aims to elevate the dining experience at The Top of the Ridge Restaurant for guests, offering themed events and special occasion dinners— creating memorable dining experiences.

“When I took over the restaurant in 2022, I knew that we needed to overhaul not only how we viewed our operations, but also how we executed on hospitality. And as we navigated the emergence from COVID—we needed a strong manager to accomplish this,” shares Sarah Malchow, Cedar Community’s chief administrative officer, who also leads the fine dining division. “Joel’s experience; his servantleader style; and his focus on hospitality, training, and professional growth have been a huge blessing to the team.

He has been critical in elevating the restaurant experience at Top of the Ridge for guests, residents, and team members!”

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT

Jerry and Kathy Balser Embracing community and giving back The Balsers moved into a Village Home on the Cedar Lake Campus in 2016. They had been living in Arizona when Jerry was introduced to a retirement community in Scottsdale and convinced Kathy to take a tour. It was a beautiful place but Kathy was not ready for a retirement community, but she agreed to put down a deposit. Months went by and Jerry asked Kathy when they would be ready to make the move. She replied, “In about 10 years.” This went on for many years, and the answer was always the same. “In about 10 years.” Jerry realized she wasn’t planning to move anytime soon, but he wanted Kathy to be taken care of if something happened to him. With no family in Arizona, Jerry thought it was time to move back to Wisconsin.

Kathy made a trip back to Wisconsin and toured a few facilities when her brother, who lives on Big Cedar Lake, suggested she visit Cedar Community. He was very familiar with Cedar Community, having spent time on the campus rehabilitating after a surgery. While driving through the Village Home neighborhoods, Kathy couldn’t believe it was a retirement community. “It looked like a typical neighborhood—unlike other communities where I was used to seeing just apartment buildings.” She immediately fell in love with the natural beauty of Cedar Community.

After returning to Arizona and discussing her discovery with Jerry, Kathy returned to Wisconsin to visit the Village Homes, while Jerry stayed in Arizona to take care of their dogs. She looked at a variety of floor plans and put down a deposit. They thought there would be a two- to three-year wait, but after selling their home in Arizona, they followed up with the sales team and learned a house was available immediately. Kathy sent her brother to check it out, and when he said he’d live there, they decided to take it—sight unseen. Jerry, who hadn’t even visited Cedar Community, said, “As long as I am with Kathy it doesn’t matter where we live.” They made a few modifications to the home and couldn’t be happier with their decision to move. Kathy tells everyone, “It’s so beautiful here; there is no place like it.”

Cedar Community also gave the Balsers many opportunities to get involved. Kathy believes everyone is blessed with unique abilities and uses hers to give back. “Nonprofit communities need volunteers,” she says. When they first moved to Cedar Community, they wanted to become active in the woodworking shop. Kathy served as treasurer for several years and also enjoys painting animal banks made by Dale Beaman, a long-time shop member. These banks are then sold in the Cedar Community gift shops.

Money made from the woodshop supports buying new equipment and Cedar Community’s Partners In Caring™ annual campaign. Kathy is also an active member of the West Bend Area Ukulele Initiative, performing at many local events and Cedar Community’s assisted living and memory care. “It’s very rewarding to see the smiles on people’s faces when we perform,” says Kathy. Jerry laughs, “Kathy is one of those people who says, ‘I am going to try that,’ and she usually likes it and is very good at it.”

Both Jerry and Kathy volunteer with the maple syrup group on campus, celebrating their yearly collection with an annual breakfast for residents to enjoy. They even published a beautiful book detailing the process to share with others who may be interested in learning about it. Jerry took the photos, and Kathy

This past year, the Balsers were invited to take the lead on a “Faith in Action Day” at their church—Good Shepherd Lutheran in West Bend—collecting food for the West Bend Full Shelf Food Pantry. The goal was to reach 1,000 homes near the church—a goal they exceeded by reaching 1,100 homes and collecting an amazing 3,650 pounds of food. The campaign was meticulously planned and mapped out by the Balsers to reach homes closest to the church. “Our goal was to not only reach out to the local community but to come together as a congregation. It was amazing to see so many people working together for the common good,” says Jerry.

Kathy agrees, “We were blessed and honored to have been invited to coordinate this event and will do it again next year.”

Books are Jerry’s specialty, as he has created many cherished keepsakes for his family. He also took photos and, along with Kathy, created a book highlighting the work of the craftsmen and craftswomen at the woodshop. Additionally, he completed a full photo inventory for the woodshop for insurance purposes.

Photography is Jerry’s passion, and he has taken many photos around the Cedar Community campuses; one of his photos was chosen for the 2024 corporate Christmas card.

Alongside fellow residents the Millers, the Balsers dedicated significant time to updating the Village Homes resident directory every year, recently adding the newest residents from The Lofts at Cedar Lake. This project included Jerry taking resident photos and Kathy updating the copy.

Their projects and joy for helping never end. Jerry’s next endeavor is creating a photo book of all the items available for sale from the woodworking shop, a considerable task given the many beautiful pieces.

At their church, Jerry also found another calling. In 2023, the church bulletin announced they were looking for a basketball coach. “I filled out an application and became an assistant coach for the third- and fourth-grade boys’ team,” says Jerry. At one time he was a high school varsity basketball coach, so it was a perfect fit. Jerry jokes with a smile, “We had a perfect record—we never won a game.”

Although they didn’t win a game, the team’s bonding and camaraderie provided a winning experience for Jerry, who gladly agreed to coach this past year. In typical Balser fashion, Kathy created stats sheets and provided a clipboard to different parents to score the games. Jerry also took individual photos of each player and gave each family a 5x7 print.

Even if you don’t live at Cedar Community, you may recognize the Balsers on various marketing materials. Both have served as models for photo shoots, and Kathy even appeared on recent billboards. They open up their home to visitors interested in seeing a Village Home, serving as gracious hosts. They frequently share their passion for Cedar Community, giving tours to friends and greater community members curious about what living at Cedar Community is all about.

Kathy is content at Cedar Community, where she has made many new friends. She appreciates the trails and natural beauty of the campus every season. She recently told a new resident, “When the first snow falls, put on your boots, walk up the Village Trail, and just stand there and take it all in. You’ll think you’re in heaven.” Jerry appreciates the faithbased mission of Cedar Community. “It’s a really caring place, and that shines through the residents and the staff, especially when someone is in need. All the residents come together to support one another. It truly is an extended family.”

When it comes to volunteering, Jerry believes that you always get more than you give. “It gives you a chance to be part of something bigger than yourself.” Kathy wholeheartedly agrees, “Everyone is blessed with the ability to do something, and I believe it’s rewarding to use that ability to serve others.”

As people age, their social circles often shrink— friends pass away or move, access to activities becomes more challenging, and making friends becomes less of a priority. However, living in a senior community provides a built-in network of people in similar life stages, which can lead to new connections through shared interests and life experiences. This supportive environment helps residents build meaningful relationships.

Healthy aging and improved quality of life Numerous studies have assessed the relationship between senior living communities and longevity outcomes for older adults. The studies found that older adults who move into a senior living community often experience better health outcomes than those who do not. The study highlights benefits such as healthcare availability, increased longevity, better health outcomes, increased social engagement, personalized support and care with enhanced independence, life enrichment opportunities, planned wellness and fitness programs, as well as conveniences and amenities designed to make life easier and more enjoyable.

Our commitment to wellbeing In addition to years of experience, Cedar Community’s independent living wellbeing team members hold degrees, licenses, and certifications in exercise science, therapeutic recreation, massage therapy, and occupational therapy. Fitness classes not only encourage physical activity but also provide social interaction, promote balance and stability, and provide cognitive engagement. “Oftentimes, we mix up the routines, introduce counting challenges, or even incorporate mental exercises like saying the alphabet backward or naming items by color,” says Kalyn Fuehrer, director of exercise and wellbeing.

Residents enjoy a diverse class schedule, both on land and in the water.

Cedar Community offers a heated, ADAaccessible pool, fitness centers, personal training options, and daily classes— enabling residents to maintain or even improve their health. Classes include chair and mat yoga, Get Your Body Moving, Aquatics Strength, Arthritis Strength and Stretch, Balance and Control, Move to Music, Water Fit Aerobics, and resistance band exercise.

Movement to Music Through Drumming combines exercise, music therapy, and mental stimulation. “Residents are seeing the benefits of joining in the classes and continue to participate to stay active,” says Wellbeing Coach Katie Woelfel.

“The pool has also been a great benefit for those wanting to build balance and strength.

Many residents can do more in water than on land because of the buoyancy, which relieves stress on joints.”

The wellbeing team has enjoyed increased resident participation across all classes. “Residents and even those touring Cedar Community see how much fun everyone is having in fitness classes,” says Kalyn. Trina Keup, wellness coach, agrees, “We have a lot of regulars who do not miss a class.” Each class is unique, with varied exercises and routines to keep it fun, engaging, and not monotonous.

The team also provides discounts on personal and group training as a benefit for Cedar Community team members. “Working out with my coworkers after work has been a great way to de-stress and stay in shape. It’s just one of the many perks of working at Cedar Community,” says Holli Thierer, director of independent living.

Residents are enjoying and benefiting from regular exercise— seeing improvements in their overall health:

“Every week, I participate in seven to eight classes including water exercise, Arthritis Strength and Stretch, Balance and Control, and resistance bands. In winter months, when I’m not gardening, I try to add yoga and the Move to Music classes. I always enjoyed excellent health and loved being active, and then the pandemic took a real toll on my health. I wasn’t ready to give up and turn into a couch potato!

Fortunately, at the same time, Cedar Community expanded its wellbeing programs. As I started attending exercise classes, I realized I could be healthy again. As a result of the classes and some dietary changes, I’ve lost 20 pounds and gained lots of strength and energy. I feel like I’ve found the fountain of youth! I get a great workout in each class, whether we are focusing on strength, balance, flexibility, cardio fitness, or all the above.

Our wonderful instructors help us learn to modify the exercises to match our abilities and levels of fitness. The classes are fun, the staff cares about us, and they keep things interesting. We all have a good time, and that’s great for our mental health.”

We also participate in the balance classes, which keep us staying strong, not falling, and progressing forward instead of backwards. Yoga classes also keep us flexible.

Travel opportunities: Passport to Travel Program Travel can enrich your life and make you healthier in both mind and body. Research shows that positive travel experiences can make a person healthier, strengthen their relationships, and benefit their overall wellness.

New experiences are beneficial for improving brain function and boosting mental health. Cedar Community offers a unique travel program, Passport to Travel, which is a first-of-its-kind created

by the United Church of Christ’s Council for Health and Human Service Ministries (CHHSM) and its member communities.

The Passport to Travel Program enables residents at 16 CHHSM member older adult communities to lodge free of charge at a sister community of their choice for up to two weeks. Without the expense of lodging, residents can experience the excitement of new cities

and enjoy the welcoming hospitality of places that feel like home— simply for the cost of their travel and incidentals.

THE LOFTS AT CEDAR LAKE A perfect fit for the Politos

After researching senior communities for many years, the Politos found their ideal retirement community when they visited The Lofts at Cedar Lake—Cedar Community’s newest independent living private residences.

Their retirement journey began after Lou retired from a 37-year career with Caterpillar. Pat worked as an executive administrative assistant for 20 years— all well as raising their three children.

The couple, both originally from Illinois, spent the first 10 years after retirement wintering in Florida and the next 10 years wintering in Arizona.

During those years, they explored senior housing options in both Florida and Arizona. With the responsibility of taking care of an aging mother and aunt and uncle, Lou was very familiar with the senior living process, and the kind of care he and Pat might need in the future.

The Politos lived in many places over Lou’s career, including Brazil and China, settling in Missouri following Lou’s retirement. They enjoy many recreational activities and are avid boaters—boating on the Illinois River and Table Rock Lake in Land of the Ozarks, to name a few. They split time between Illinois and Missouri for about five years, but when their youngest grandchild was born, they decided to move to Wisconsin so they could enjoy time with her and their daughter’s family. Their five older grandchildren were in high school and beyond when the youngest was born, so they didn’t want to miss out on seeing her grow up.

After seeing so much of the world, and moving more than 20 times during their 63-year marriage, the Politos are putting down roots at The Lofts at Cedar Lake—a move they made in November. “It’s a habit for us always to be packing and going somewhere, so we are happy to be going in a different direction,” says Pat. Having lived in West Bend in recent years, the Politos were familiar with Cedar Community and had friends who live at the Cedar Ridge Campus.

Two years ago, Pat toured with a friend—only visiting the Cedar Ridge Apartments. Seeing The Lofts at Cedar Lake online is what piqued their interest and the reason they scheduled a tour. “The minute we walked in we loved it,” says Lou. Pat agrees, “It just felt right and comfortable immediately.”

Within a week of their tour, they decided to make the move, listed and sold their condo in two days, and settled into their new home in early November.

“We were so impressed the moment we walked into The Lofts at Cedar Lake, and it just got better when we saw the grounds,” says Pat. Lou agrees, “Being boat owners for 30 years, we are very much water people, and it’s amazing to be on beautiful Big Cedar Lake.”

Cedar Community appealed to the Politos because of the location. “There are so many places you see that just looked like they are in the middle of a field, which there is nothing wrong with, but the Cedar Community grounds appealed more to us.”

Lou also values Cedar Community’s long history and strong community ties to the greater West Bend area. “Compared to other places we toured—Cedar Community seems more established and is a big part of the community.” Pat added, “It has integrity.” Lou was particularly drawn to Cedar Community because of our nonprofit, faith-based mission. “I feel like Cedar Community is more oriented and committed to the people, rather than making a profit,” says Lou. Pat said she immediately felt the warmth of the staff. “I felt like I was part of a bigger family. We have not met one person that isn’t 100 percent genuine.”

Beyond the natural scenery of the campus, the Politos were also impressed by the design and spaciousness of The Lofts at Cedar Lake compared to other senior communities they visited. “We like the floor plans and the amount of closet and storage,” says Pat. “You don’t see that in a lot of other places,” noted Lou. With all the moves and wintering out of state, the Politos are looking forward to relaxing and enjoying life with their mini Goldendoodle, Abby. Once they are settled in, Lou is eager to join the woodworking shop and already has a few projects in mind. Pat looks forward to volunteering, and both are excited for all the activities and exercise spaces.

The Politos are grateful they found a place that feels like home, and the timing was perfect to enjoy a Wisconsin winter in the comfort and warmth of a carefree lifestyle. Welcome, Lou and Pat! We hope your next chapter is filled with new lifelong friends and adventures.

RESIDENT PROFILE Lee Dougherty BY: Gladys Sachse Resident, Cedar Community Independent Living

Lee Dougherty was born near Oshkosh and grew up an only child on a five-acre farm close to his grandparents. His first encounter with a horse was Old Pete, Grandpa’s workhorse. When they cut hay or cultivated corn, Lee rode on Old Pete’s back. The Doughertys liked animals and also owned a dog, cat, chickens, ducks, and beef cattle. Lee’s dad worked at Buckstaff’s factory, and his mother owned and operated a beauty salon.

When Lee was in fourth grade, his parents surprised him with a black Shetland pony named Danny. Soon they got Spot, a pretty pinto that was in foal, and delivered Lucky. Lee’s family and friends enjoyed riding Danny and Spot and training Lucky. In 1945, his parents bought twin white half-Arabian horses, Sheik and Sheba. Lee helped with chores and took care of the animals.

He entered Danny and Sheba in horse shows and joined the Oshkosh Riding Club. Lee and his mom also rode Sheik and Sheba in parades.

When Lee was 16, his parents bought a 97-acre farm near Winneconne and acquired a young herd of dairy cattle and all the farm equipment.

Sadly, the horses had to go.

At Winneconne High School, Lee became involved in Future Farmers of America (FFA). He enjoyed agriculture so much that he followed in his favorite instructor’s—Bill Duvall—footsteps and graduated from the University of WisconsinPlatteville in 1959 with a major in agriculture and a minor in biological science.

While in college, Lee met a pretty young lady.

He married Sharon the summer before his senior year. They had two sons and he now has five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

After graduation, Lee taught science and industrial arts at a junior high school in Kewanee, Illinois. They wanted to live near his parents and help them on the farm, so in 1962, he accepted a position teaching science at McLane Middle School in West Bend.

In 1957, Russia sent up the first satellite, Sputnik, which paved the way for manned space flight. As a result, the U.S. government decided math and science teachers needed more and better training to teach their students, and in 1962 and 1964, Lee received the National Science Foundation Summer Institute awards in Geology and Meteorology (at Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts). In 1964, he resigned from teaching in West Bend and received an NSF Science Education Academic Year award in Physics at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He got his master’s degree in science education following that program. Lee taught junior high science, physics, and physical science in Las Vegas. In 1973, he returned to West Bend High School to teach agriculture (animal science, horticulture, farm production, horses, and horsemanship) and served as the FFA advisor.

In 1980, after Lee and Sharon divorced, he left education and moved to Ohio, where he worked for a petroleum company—leasing land to explore gas and oil production. When the price of gas and oil dropped, he was laid off.

The exotic look of the Arabian horse stayed with him, so for a few years following, he traveled around the country buying and selling fine Arabian horses for clients.

In 1990, he moved back to Kenosha to teach science for the Kenosha Military Academy, helping 18–20-year-olds get the KUSD version of a GED, until he retired. He counts this role as one of his most rewarding positions. While living in Kenosha, he met and married Kaye, and the family grew to include her daughter and family as well.

Lee has a passion for Arabian horses and thinks of them as living art. He is regularly published in the quarterly magazine Arabian Horse World. He has more than 5,000 friends on Facebook, mostly horse lovers exchanging ideas and information with Arabian horse breeders nationally and worldwide. He has written multiple articles and has many binders filled with the pedigree, lineage, and history of the horses with their photos. One could say Lee lives for and dreams of horses!

His career and his love for Arabian horses took him to many areas of the United States, especially the West. Lee and his wife traveled to Alaska and enjoyed three cruises. In May of 2020, his wife Kaye passed away.

As Lee’s health began to change, his sons and family who live in West Bend wanted him to live closer. They searched retirement places and toured Cedar Community. Lee said there was no doubt this is where he wanted to live.

He was exceedingly pleased. An apartment was available, and in July of 2024 he moved from his home in Kenosha to Cedar Community’s independent living. He has high praises for the caring staff and other residents who are so kind and friendly, and he enjoys the many activities available. The area is beautiful with its nature paths, trees, and wildlife. He says without a doubt this is the best move he’s ever made, and he has moved a lot through the years. “I’m finally home,” says Lee. Lee has a to-do list that includes publishing a children’s picture book of Arabian horses sketched with images from photos, namely a friend’s black (rare) Arabian stallion. He would also like to do a presentation called “The Living Art of Arabian Horses.” Lee truly has a passion for horses and wants to share that knowledge.

Cedar Community announces new chief financial officer Cedar Community is pleased to announce that James E. Karls, CPA, joined the organization in November as chief financial officer. With more than 20 years’ experience in corporate finance in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors, Karls brings a deep background in financial modeling, fiscal analysis, budgeting, and planning. Having served in roles of increasing responsibility at organizations like Fiserv Inc., Deloitte, Brookdale Senior Living, and most recently Discovery World, Karls will lead the financial services team at Cedar Community and will be a member of the executive council.

Cedar Lake Campus celebrates construction completion Cedar Community marked a major milestone with the completion of the Cedar Lake Campus repositioning and renovations in October of 2024 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside The West Bend Area Chamber of Commerce. The project converted unused and underused spaces into new independent living loft-style residences and independent living plus apartments, refreshed skilled nursing and therapy facilities, renewed dining spaces, and updated the exterior facade. Cedar Community is proud of this project as we were able to repurpose existing spaces rather than constructing new buildings on the legacy campus—preserving the campus footprint and staying true to our guiding principles of stewardship and responsibility.

LOOKING AHEAD a year in review I love the new year. January 1 feels like a blank page in a notebook or a field after a fresh snow. It is full of possibilities and is an invitation to create, to recreate, to envision future goals and aspirations.

WAYS TO HELP Partners In Caring™

For over 40 years, Cedar Community’s Partners In Caring annual fund has helped us provide dignified and compassionate care for all of our residents—even if their financial resources dwindle. Americans are enjoying a level of vitality and longevity never seen before, yet more and more seniors are finding that the funds they set aside for retirement and long-term care are not enough. When residents must rely on Medicaid or other government supports for their care, they must have already fully exhausted all but $2,000 of their financial assets in order to qualify. Quite literally—these seniors have very few financial resources left and no ability to pay. And Medicaid does not fully cover the ongoing cost of their care— leaving more than $105 per patient, per day unreimbursed. But we are committed to our goal of providing best-in-class care to every resident, every day—spending on average $3M annually to support our low-income neighbors who need this skilled nursing or assisted living care.

Looking back at the 2024 fiscal year, I am proud of the team’s attention on our guiding principle of Responsibility. Our board of directors, executive leadership team, and our managing directors have all keenly focused on responsibility for budgetary stewardship and revenue performance. In spite of continued inflationary pressures and continuing shortfalls in Medicaid reimbursements, our team has been diligent 1% in pursing every opportunity 6% for cost savings, for maximizing and diversifying Assisted Living 25% service12% revenue, and keeping a close eye on Independent Living both fixed and variable expenses.
