GET YOUR KICKS ON ROUTE 66 When I was a child, I remember watching Martin Milner (later of ADAM-12 fame) and George Maharis on the early 1960s television show Route 66. Being tied down to the daily chores of a dairy farm, I remember being envious of the duos’ freedom to roam around the country, chasing one adventure after another. I reached that show’s titular number in age this past year, and it is with mixed feelings that I write this issue’s column.

I have given notice to the Cedar Community Board of Directors of my intent to retire on June 30 of 2021. By that time, I will have spent 42 years in the healthcare and retirement services field. It has been a very personally fulfilling career and ministry.

As I look back, the past five years here at Cedar Community seemed to have flown by. Early on, there were many challenges, but our team rose to meet those challenges and began building a stronger future. We’ve strengthened and diversified our board of directors, developed a cohesive and effective senior leadership team, and remained committed to recruiting and retaining competent, caring team members.

We have also sought to strengthen our commitment to ministry these past five years. We expanded our chaplaincy team members to four full-time, and one part-time professional, who serve in all areas of our ministry. We have worked to increase our connections with the greater church community, and we’ve also strengthened our relationships with the leadership of the United Church of Christ, and the Council of Health and Human Services Ministries, with whom we are partners in ministry.

On the facilities front, we have almost completely remodeled our independent and assisted living buildings, developed plans to upgrade our road and utilities infrastructure, and begun construction on a new neighborhood, the Cedar Ridge Homes, which is filling up on schedule. We have also paid special attention to making our facilities accessible to people of all physical and mental abilities, both inside our buildings, and outside on the hundreds of acres of beautiful grounds we are blessed to manage.

The year 2020 has proven to be one of the most challenging in my professional career. The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for our world, our country, our state, and our community. While certainly impacting a broad spectrum of humankind, the pandemic has been especially devastating to the 65 and older population. As any provider of retirement living services knows, this past year of “COVID-19 Winter” has been extremely challenging for residents, families, and team members. Our team has done an amazing job of doing their best to keep residents safe and healthy, while maintaining connections with families whenever possible. While we are not immune to COVID-19’s impact on the greater community, we have worked hard to minimize its impact within our resident population.

This long, dark pandemic winter will eventually give way to a spring of healing and hope. Senior living residents and team members will be a priority for early vaccination this winter, helping to control the pandemic’s impact within our community. By mid-2021, the hope is that vaccination will be available for an increasing number of members of the general population, and that we will all be able to see that light on the horizon—the dawn of a brighter future.

In the meantime, I would again ask that everyone stay the course, follow the medical guidance we have been given, and work together as one community, one country, one world; to keep each other safe until this pandemic winter has given way to the promise of renewed hope, optimism, and prosperity.

As I prepare to head out on my own Route 66 adventure, I pray for the continued success of Cedar Community, and the safety and health of our residents, team members, and greater community.

At every stage of life, in illness or in health, caring for body, mind, and spirit can foster a sense of wellbeing. Increased opportunities for socialization, education, and spirituality enhance this sense. This isn’t just an opinion. It has been well documented.

MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT

As early as 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated wellness is about striving toward “physical, mental, and social wellbeing” and is not simply “absence of disease.” In 1976, Dr. Bill Hettler, cofounder of the National Wellness Institute in the United States, developed a model of wellness that included six dimensions of health: physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, and occupational. Later on, researchers added an “environmental” dimension, and others have helpfully changed the focus from “occupational” wellness to “vocational” wellness.

Following up on research by others that identified the geographic location with the highest concentration of male centenarians, Dan Buettner identified nine lifestyle habits that contribute to longevity and published and expounded on them in his “Blue Zones” project.

The habits are grouped into categories of moving naturally, eating wisely, having an outlook on life that is purposeful and manages stress, and maintaining meaningful and supportive connections with loved ones, friends, and faith groups.

Cedar Community is uniquely positioned to support holistic wellbeing by leveraging its committed team members, natural setting, and spiritual heritage to enhance the lives of the residents we serve. Even as the persistent pandemic limits opportunities for physical connection and communal socialization, we are exploring ways to expand our meaningful and comprehensive programs and services designed to support all aspects of being well.

Along those lines, Cedar Community has recently added a wellness coordinator to help oversee these endeavors. An additional chaplain has also joined the spiritual care team to enhance our support of residents in our independent living settings.

CEDAR COMMUNITY WELCOMES WELLNESS COORDINATOR At every stage in life, caring for body, mind, and spirit can foster a sense of wellbeing. Cedar Community recently created a staff position for a wellness coordinator who will be responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive wellness program throughout Cedar Community’s continuum of care. The wellness coordinator will implement physical, social, and intellectual engagement to complement existing clinical, spiritual, and life enrichment activities.

Cedar Community welcomes Alyssa Sommerfeldt as the wellness coordinator. “We are excited to expand our focus on multi-dimensional programming to support the wellbeing of residents at Cedar Community, and we are delighted Alyssa will be helping to lead us in that endeavor. Her experience, enthusiasm, and commitment equip her well for the creative, connective, and collaborative work ahead,” says Julie Jennings, Vice President of Ministry.

Alyssa attended the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in community health education. As part of her graduation requirement, she participated in a semester-long internship. She choose Austin, Texas and worked for the City of Austin on corporate wellness.

She worked with employees on healthy eating, diabetes, and smoking cessation programs along with a heart health program, working closely with the American Heart Association.

After graduation, she was offered a position with the American Heart Association for one year under a grant contract. She actively worked with the community recruiting businesses, churches, and schools to participate in the heart health program. Education was also part of the position, educating the public on blood pressure, including understanding the numbers and ways to help lower them.

Alyssa also held CPR classes. “I really enjoyed working with the community and helping people with their health concerns,” says Alyssa.

From Texas, Alyssa moved back to Wisconsin and took a job at Ripon Community Hospital as an aide in the physical therapy department. She enjoyed learning how physical therapists work with and educate their patients. She was looking to get back into community education and took a position at the Alzheimer’s Association as a community outreach coordinator. Working with four counties, she provided education on the disease, met with families to address their concerns, and participated as a speaker at their local conferences. Unfortunately, the position was eliminated due to COVID-19. While looking for another community outreach position she went back to the hospital as a nursing assistant on the medical/surgical unit for six months until the position at Cedar Community became available.

Alyssa looks forward to working with residents on increasing engagement, creating wellness programs, and providing education. “Preventative health is a passion of mine, being able to educate people on health topics so they can make better informed choices,” says Alyssa.

In her free time, Alyssa loves exercising and she has run two half marathons. She also enjoys being outside, reading, anything to do with art, and being around her friends and family, including her two dogs.

RESIDENT PROFILE Frank Miezio Frank was born in Milwaukee, the youngest of three children. His parents were very giving and caring people who opened their home to 33 foster children. He attended St. Cyril & Methodius, and St. Alphonsus grade schools. He completed high school at Brunnerdale Seminary in Canton, Ohio. He attended college for three years at St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, Indiana, and St. Mary Novitiate in Ohio.

He decided he wanted to see the world and joined the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1970 working as an aviation electrician. He served in San Diego, Jacksonville Naval Base, Maryland, Rhode Island, Panama, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines, and finished at Great Lakes in Chicago.

He completed his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received his bachelor’s degree in business administration/human resources and his master’s degree in health care administration/ financial management. His broad education and organizational skills served him well throughout his career.

Frank was a licensed nursing home administrator in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, beginning as an administrator at Mercy Extended Care Center in Oshkosh during a time of great transition.

At Lincoln Lutheran in Racine, he was an administrator for 10 years beginning in 1976. He directed various elements of a multi-facility complex— including three skilled nursing facilities and three supervised living facilities, as well as three apartment complexes and community services. He managed purchasing, human resources, and finance activities for the organization. To learn and understand the clinical care needed by the residents, he took the nursing assistant course and worked for a while with the staff in patient care of the nursing units.

He was hired in 1986 as the executive director at Friendship Village in Schaumberg, Illinois, a continuing care facility serving more than 800 residents on a 60-acre campus with a staff of more than 400. During his tenure of ten years, it was the first nationally accredited continuing care organization in Illinois. While there, he also developed the first assisted living unit in Illinois. With Frank’s leadership, Friendship Village became stronger organizationally, financially, and in mission.

Frank was also involved in the churches and communities where he lived. He was a Rotary member in Schaumberg and Racine. At Willow Creek Community Church in Illinois he served in various ministries—Children’s Ministry, Singles Small Group, Good Sense (Financial Peace) Ministry, Global Hospitality, as well as leadership conferences at home and overseas. In Winona, Minnesota, Frank served as an elder at Living Light Church along with other ministries.

Starting in 1997, he worked two years as Vice President of Elder Services and Business Development at Woodstock Christian Life Services in Woodstock, Illinois. He was responsible for the overall operation of the elder services as well as the physical plant and facilities of the organization.

He traveled around the United States with the Road Scholar program. He enjoyed skiing in Colorado and also traveled to China, Germany, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, and Israel. While in New Zealand, he enjoyed paragliding and bungee jumping.

He became chief executive officer at St. Anne of Winona in Minnesota in 1999 for four years. He was responsible to the Benedictine Health System and local board for the operation of this full-service retirement community providing rehabilitation, clinically complex care, palliative and special (dementia) care, assisted and independent living, adult day care services, and nurse aid training for Southeast Minnesota.

He moved to Cedar Community after his retirement in 2016. He knew of Cedar Community because of its reputation from his experience with senior living facilities.

His sister, Madelynn, lived here nine years before he moved.

He says Cedar Community is like family, yet he enjoys his independence. He likes the economics of living here, along with the wonderful staff, residents, cleanliness, and services available.

In 2004 Frank was hired as manager at Village Green of East Dundee, Illinois. He transitioned the condominium association for people 55 and older through various forms of management. Through board and staff development, Village Green moved from not meeting operational cost debt to operating efficiently and effectively, significantly increasing its financial reserves. He developed more open communication patterns and fortified independent living characteristics of Village Green as he managed all facets of the facility’s daily operations and strategic foresight.

He noted that throughout his life he tended to bring order from chaotic situations through cultivating core values and following good business practices. At times he was recruited by other senior organizations for consultation.

Frank continues serving by volunteering at Cedar Community. He is the Cedar Community food pantry coordinator for the Full Shelf Food Pantry in West Bend. Frank also hosts morning exercise groups and enjoys walking, swimming, and listening to music. He sings with Cedar Community’s Choristers. He is currently serving on the SAE (social, activity, and education) Committee as an alternate and serves as president on the Cedar Ridge Resident Council.

Did you ever wonder who puts out the flags at Cedar Community’s independent living apartments in recognition of national holidays? Frank helps Orville Larsen do it. He says, “There is joy in doing.”

Frank also served in various leadership positions in professional associations including serving on teams evaluating retirement communities around the country for the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission.

outstanding team members Every quarter, Cedar Community recognizes team members who go above and beyond their everyday tasks for our residents, families, volunteers, and their fellow team members. Cedar Community is proud to announce our team members of the quarter award winners: Krystal Klitzke, RN, and Thea Liebelt, RN, Nurse Education Krystal Klitzke, RN, is a case manager for Cedar Community Home Health and Hospice. In 2008, she rejoined the workforce after her children were in school full time, and chose Cedar Community’s nursing assistant training class to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA). She worked as a CNA until 2012 when her family moved to Michigan.

After her experience at Cedar Community, she knew the healthcare field was the right fit, attending Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College and graduating with a twoyear registered nursing degree. “I never realized how much I would enjoy the nursing field until I worked at Cedar Community,” says Krystal.

In 2017, Krystal and her family moved back to Wisconsin, and she worked at St. Mary’s Ozaukee hospital as a floor nurse. She really missed the connections formed in a retirement community and long-term care environment.

“I made friendships that are forever, and jumped at the opportunity to come back to Cedar Community when a position became available that fit my skill level,” says Krystal.

Her focus as the RN case manager is in the home health division. She enjoys getting to know patients and their families, developing a relationship, and following them on their journey to improved health and wellness. “We are proud and blessed that Krystal is part of our team. I am always impressed with her knowledge and wanting to continue to learn and grow as a nurse,” says Paula Mugan, BSN, RN, Clinical Manager.

Krystal’s role includes patient assessments, and learning more about patient needs beyond the initial physician orders, including social services or medication management. Hands on, she provides wound care and is currently taking a wound certification course. She also helps with catheters and IVs, and helps keep patients safe through education and safety information. “I enjoy getting to know the patient. Being in their home, you pick up on more of who they are. You learn more about their interests, and you can really see health wise where they are, and there is a lot more family involvement,” says Krystal.

Krystal definitely feels like she has found her calling in home health and hospice. “This job wouldn’t be what it is without the amazing strong team we have. Both times I have worked here I have been able to count on my coworkers. I think it’s a Cedar Community trait—having a great team who looks out for each other,” says Krystal. Her team members feel the same way about her when they nominated her for Team Member of the Quarter saying, “Krystal is an outstanding nurse and patient advocate.” “Krystal has determination and fights for her patients.” “She is passionate about her work and goes above and beyond in helping her coworkers by sharing her knowledge.” “Our team can always count on Krystal.”

From a small-town girl, living in Campbellsport, she went off to Northwestern University School of Nursing in Chicago. She earned her degree as a registered nurse, and accepted a medical/ surgical job in Oshkosh, before heading to the Veteran’s Administration hospital in Madison.

In Madison, she met her husband and his job transfer in the nuclear engineering field took them to Idaho.

While in Idaho, Thea worked as a labor and delivery nurse, until a hospital buyout caused her to switch gears professionally.

She had a friend who was the director of nursing at a new nursing home and began working for her in 1978. “I found my love, and have been working in geriatric care ever since. I love the older generation, their music, work ethic, kinship, and life history,” says Thea.

A divorce sent Thea back to her Wisconsin roots with three kids. Thea worked as the director of nursing at Beechwood Rest Home for seven years. However, with a son in his teen years who needed to be closer to his father, she moved back to Idaho in 1990, and returned to the nursing home she had previously left. After eight years in Idaho, she made the move back to Wisconsin to care for her mom who had Alzheimer’s. She moved in to her mom’s home, and worked at Manor Care in Fond du Lac, while splitting the care of her mom with a certified nursing assistant. After Thea’s mom passed away, she decided she wanted to go into management again, and found an opportunity at Cedar Community.

“I was always very familiar with Cedar Community from my teenage years in the United Church of Christ and participating in fellowship activities at Cedar Community when it was just a small nursing home,” says Thea. She was hired as a nurse manager in 2006 in skilled nursing care, and in 2013 became a MDS (Minimum Data Set) Coordinator, working in the short-term rehabilitation department, assessing new patients and working through financial reimbursement protocols.

“Since Thea joined Cedar Community’s nursing team in 2006, she has been one of our biggest cheerleaders. Her spark and enthusiasm is contagious to everyone she encounters!” says Heather Suarez Del Real, RN, Director of Nursing. “She has been through numerous role changes within the nursing department in the past year and has risen to every challenge we have given her. We are honored and blessed to have her on our team.”

Thea has been an integral part of Cedar Community’s COVID-19 testing and screening procedures, and she is currently phasing into a new position of nursing education, working with new team members in orientation, skills testing, and yearly education credit audits. “It really is a whole new thing for me, but my long-range plan is to work part time. I can’t see ever retiring. I would be so bored.”

Thea could have retired many years ago and friends often ask why she is still working to which she responds, “I am treated really well and am told how much I am appreciated. Everyone wants to hear things like that. When you get to be my age and people still think that, why would I want to leave?”

FIRST RESIDENTS MOVE INTO CEDAR RIDGE HOMES Cedar Community welcomed Dick and Susie Hammes as the first residents of the newly constructed Cedar Ridge Homes, which include 15 ranch-style duplex homes. Each of the 30 units are nearly 1,700 square feet, and feature two bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, den, twocar garage, basement, and upgraded finishes— including smart technology.

Dick and Susie moved from their home in Prairie du Sac of 25 years to their new Cedar Ridge home in October. Both were retired pharmacists enjoying life on what they called their little piece of Heaven, two acres of land with 150 feet of frontage on the Wisconsin River. “We had a great life there, but the property was physically getting harder for me to maintain. I am looking forward to Cedar Community taking care of all the home maintenance,” says Dick. Cedar Ridge Homes was the perfect fit for Dick and Susie with the spacious living, woods, and close access to walking trails and Ridge Run Park. “The park path is literally right in our backyard and I can take our two dogs for a walk. It was an easy decision to make the move when we learned Cedar Community would accommodate our dogs,” says Susie.

Susie grew up in Milwaukee, and Dick lived in West Bend. They met while attending UW-Madison’s School of Pharmacy and moved to West Bend after they graduated. Dick worked at the Albrecht Clinic in Jackson and Susie managed the Sison Clinic pharmacy in Kewaskum. Later, Dick worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee as a nuclear pharmacist. His role included making a drug which was tagged with radioactive material that would give off gamma rays, which then imaged, and showed organ function. Dick wanted to get into the UW system to teach, so they moved to California where he attended the University of Southern California for his master’s degree. He held a teaching assistant position for one year while there before moving back to Madison where he got a job with the UW Health University Hospital. While in Madison, Susie managed a clinic and then worked at the veteran’s hospital. Both worked with UWMadison students on their clinical rotations. Susie retired in 2003, and Dick retired for the first time in 2005. Dick then had an offer he couldn’t refuse from a research company in Madison, which was doing radioactive drug development. He fully retired after eight more years in 2013.

The Hammes were familiar with Cedar Community. Dick’s father lived in the independent living apartments years ago, and more recently, his sister Jeanne lived in the apartments, then homes, before she passed away in the fall of 2019. Jeanne was instrumental in convincing Dick and Susie to make the move.

“Jeanne really twisted our arm, even leaving enough for the down payment in her will for us and my sister Joanne,” says Dick. Joanne moved into the independent living apartments in early 2020. “We are really happy to be so close now. Joanne and I are 10 years apart, so this has really brought us together,” says Dick.

Both Dick and Susie look forward to meeting new neighbors as the construction of Cedar Ridge Homes continues. “There is so much opportunity for living while you’re here. We both plan to try new hobbies and enjoy life,” says Susie.

Jean Hauser has fulfilled her passion in life—her passion for flying. One of six girls growing up in Hartford, Jean was born deaf. She attended the Wisconsin School for the Deaf in Delavan, and following graduation, Jean worked at Briggs & Stratton in Milwaukee on the assembly line, retiring after 40 years.

Jean’s passion for flight came from flying with a friend who was a pilot. “I decided right then I needed to learn to be a pilot. I saved my money so I could take lessons and found a very patient instructor, Ed Emanuel, at the Hartford airport,” says Jean. Ed was able to communicate with Jean by finger spelling out words one letter at a time. They were a great match and able to learn from each other. “He said if I was patient enough to work with him, he would be patient enough to help me learn,” says Jean. The trust Ed put in Jean gave her the confidence to earn her pilot’s license in 1965 and then to buy a brand-new Cessna 172. She bought it in Missouri and flew home to Wisconsin solo.

Trips every weekend were not uncommon for Jean. She has flown all over the United States.

Her longest trip, one she calls the coastal one, took her to New York, Georgia, Louisiana, California, Colorado, and back home to Wisconsin. Her friend Karen would often travel with her. “I was actually surprised Karen wanted to fly with me,” laughs Jean. “You know I am deaf, right?”

Many times, Karen served as Jean’s voice, radioing the tower for landing. Other times, Jean flew alone. “When I would land, the ground crew would come up to me and start talking and I had to motion to them I was deaf. Not only were they shocked to see a woman flying, but a deaf woman no less,” says Jean. She oftentimes had fun teasing them as they looked at her in awe.

With the help of Debbie Przedpelski, MSW, Cedar Community Hospice Social Worker, Jean was able to enjoy one last flight in November of 2020 through Lifestar’s Cherished Moments Program. Lifestar transported her to the West Bend airport at no charge. West Bend Air generously donated the plane and fuel, and pilot Glenn Butts donated his time to fly with Jean. “When I heard Jean’s story, I was more than happy to help out. She did everything but land the plane,” says Glenn. “Jean was a little nervous, but it all came back to her when she sat in that left seat, the pilot’s seat.”

Jean accomplished her dreams of flight. She was the first deaf pilot in Wisconsin, and she was inducted into the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame in 2008. Jean is very humble and doesn’t think much about it. What she does think about are the days of being able to take off whenever she wanted and feeling free without limits. Today, Jean is content at Cedar Community’s assisted living, enjoying the friendliness of the team members and reminiscing about the thrills of flying.

MEET BRETT LLOYD Executive Chef, Top of the Ridge Restaurant

With a highly revered foundation for cooking that has been developed and refined through years of formal training and experience, Chef Brett LLoyd brings an exceptional level of expertise and creativity to her role as executive chef at Top of the Ridge Restaurant.

Originally from Key West, Florida, Brett has called Milwaukee home for nearly 20 years. Her interest in cooking piqued at a very young age with her discovery of Julia Child’s The French Chef on PBS. From there, she began preparing recipes for her family from one of Julia Child’s cookbooks, given to her by her grandmother. As she continued to demonstrate her love for cooking, and with her parents’ support and encouragement, she began an apprenticeship at the age of 13. It was then that she found an important mentor and began to fully develop and hone her skills in the kitchen. That experience only nurtured and stoked her passions, inspiring a move to New York City to attend the Culinary Institute of America. Brett graduated from this highly prestigious culinary school at 19 and accepted her first big role and career as an executive pastry chef in San Francisco.

Brett’s love for cooking follows her wherever she goes, and it shows in her free time, as she enjoys preparing meals for friends, family, and her five children, teaching them the importance of knowing where your food comes from and how flavors develop. Brett also enjoys dancing, swimming, and tending to her garden, where she utilizes much of what she grows in her cooking. In the kitchen or out, her devotion to her craft and enthusiasm are always on display.

Rocky Road Brownies · 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces · 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped · 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped · 1 cup sugar · 2 large eggs · 3⁄4 cup all-purpose flour · 1⁄2 teaspoon salt · 1 cup almonds, toasted and chopped coarsely · 3 cups miniature marshmallows · 1⁄2 cup milk chocolate chips · 1⁄2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Preheat oven to 350°F and line a 9-inch square baking pan with nonstick tin foil, crimping to create a 4-inch ‘collar’. Spray with nonstick cooking spray.

In a heavy 1 1/2-quart saucepan (or microwave on medium), melt butter, unsweetened chocolate, and bittersweet chocolate, stirring until smooth, then remove the pan from heat. Cool mixture 10 minutes.

Stir in sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating well with a wooden spoon until the mixture is glossy and smooth.

Mix flour and salt separately, then gently stir into the chocolate mixture.

Spread batter evenly in pan and bake in middle of oven for 20 minutes.

Remove pan from oven and add chocolate, almonds, and marshmallows evenly over brownies.

Bake brownies until marshmallows are puffy and pale golden, 7 to 10 minutes.

Remove from oven, quickly swirl just the top chocolate/marshmallow with a skewer.

Cool brownies completely in pan on a rack, then refrigerate until firm.

Trim edges, then cut into 16 squares with a buttered knife.

Making a difference at Cedar Community Dick and Lois Stefanowski Dick and Lois Stefanowski began looking at retirement communities when a friend needed to make the move from her home. They were so touched by the whole process, especially how she made the transition and downsized. “She was a people magnet and every time someone would visit her prior to the move, she would give them a gift from her home. She ended up getting rid of an entire teddy bear collection and even furniture,� says Lois. Dick and Lois knew they would be open to making a move when the time came.

The Stefanowskis lived in Hartland for 13 years and Brookfield for 35 years, so most of their visits to retirement communities were in the Milwaukee area, until close friends made the move to Cedar Community. “We actually had a down payment on another facility, but enjoyed the atmosphere at Cedar Community,” says Dick. “Compared to other places we toured, Cedar Community was so unbelievably friendly from the residents to the team members,” adds Lois. The many acres of woods and access to Big Cedar Lake were also a great amenity for them.

When Dick and Lois decided it was time to make the move they had no problem downsizing. “We had a difficult experience with one of our parents who lived in their home for 55 years and were savers. We ended up with the 100-year old home.

Some rooms you could barely move through because stuff was stacked to eye level. We spent six months cleaning it out,” says Dick. At one point, the Stefanowskis even called the local fire department to see if they wanted to use the packed garage for training purposes. When the fire department turned them down, not knowing the potentially harmful contents, they prayed for a tornado. That experience was a pivotal moment in their decision to downsize and move. It was not a situation they wanted for their four children.

Before moving to Cedar Community, Lois, a teacher by trade, and one of the first graduates of the University of WisconsinMilwaukee with a master’s degree in education and psychology, was actively involved in a variety of her church’s ministry programs over the years. In addition, as a volunteer, she was a speaker on health and wellness topics in area high schools.

Dick, a retired heavy equipment salesman with a degree in math science and civil engineering from Marquette, was also actively involved in church ministry, even serving as a deacon. He was also active in their homeowner’s association.

Volunteering at Cedar Community was an easy decision for both. Dick waters plants around campus, drives the golf carts and pontoon boats, helps with the exercise class, is part of the Welcome Friends Committee, helps with special events, and the sap boiling process after maple syrup collection. Lois is a representative for the Resident Council, helps at Cedar Treasures Resale Shop, and also assists with as many special events as she can. “This is our home now, and when you are home, you help take care of the place,” says Dick. “I love the people-to-people contact and I see it as a way to encourage others. When we volunteer it’s a sense of community and being in this all together, sharing with each other. It’s a precious experience of connection,” says Lois.

Dick and Lois were high school sweethearts and have been married for 63 years. Throughout the years they feel blessed and enriched in their lives. In their two and a half years at Cedar Community, Dick and Lois continue to move forward in life with their next chapter, enjoying the richness and opportunities that continue to become available. “For some, volunteering is about giving, for Dick and Lois it is a way of living. Each time they volunteer they give their heart and soul for others. They work individually and as a team to make life better for others at Cedar Community,” says Bonnie Amerling, Volunteer Coordinator.

2020 | A YEAR IN REVIEW A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT To our residents, team members, valued partners, and donors of Cedar Community, As we welcome the New Year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on all we’ve been through and shared in the past year. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact all areas of our lives, and it has especially changed the lives of our team members and residents at Cedar Community. While we pray that safe vaccines will begin to ease the burden of COVID-19, we also expect that the virus will continue to affect the lives of those most at risk—including older adults.

Knowing what’s behind us—and what is still likely to come—I wanted to take a moment to express the appreciation of Cedar Community’s Board of Directors.

We are incredibly thankful for the friends and donors who have put others over self through their gifts of time, talents, and financial support.

We celebrate the amazing perseverance, dedication, and compassion of our team members.

We are grateful for the support of the greater communities of Washington and Sheboygan counties and beyond. They have lifted up Cedar Community with their prayers, well-wishes, cards, and financial support in recent months.

And we are deeply appreciative of the resilience and patience of our residents and their family members.

This has been a year like no other, and it will have long-lasting effects for years to come. We continue to need the fortitude to overcome the emotional and physical separation from so many in our lives and our resident’s lives to protect each other. The sacrifices needed from each of us have been made out of genuine concern for those we work with and those we are given the responsibility to care for and keep safe.

2020 | A YEAR 2020 IN | AREVIEW YEAR IN REVIEW A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF PHILANTHROPY Annual reports are most often filled with facts, figures, projections, and performance metrics—and as one who loves data and information—I consider each of these things terribly important. And while numbers and data tell us a lot about the past year, as we leave 2020 behind us—I wanted to focus on the people who made the last year possible.

Cedar Community Strong became the rallying cry across all of our campuses last March when it became clear the COVID-19 pandemic was going to profoundly impact our team members, residents, and families for months to come. Oxford Languages Dictionary defines strong as - to withstand great force or pressure. And that’s what we’ve done. But we’ve not done it alone.

I continue to marvel at the resiliency, creativity, and compassion that each and every member of the Cedar Community Team demonstrated in the past year. Our clinical leadership tested their incredible knowledge and professionalism in making sure that policies and practices were in place to keep us all safe and healthy. Our nursing team and front-line healthcare professionals were the hands that provided direct care for your family and loved ones every day in the face of a pandemic. Team members from across all divisions and campuses stepped out of their lanes to make sure meals were delivered, testing was accomplished, and screenings completed. I’ve heard it said that it takes a village...In our case, I would say: it takes a Community.

I am beyond grateful for the many Friends and Donors who have supported Cedar Community with their financial gifts in this extraordinary year. In a time of uncertainty, furloughs, and economic challenges, so many people and organizations stepped forward to help. Our friends at the Stone Family Foundation, the National Exchange Bank Foundation, the West Bend Mutual Insurance Foundation, and the Oscar C and August Schlegel Foundation came together with extraordinary support for our COVID response efforts. Hundreds of others have not only continued to support our Partners In Caring™ campaign, but have increased their gifts to meet an expanding need. For each and every dollar, we are humbled and thankful.

The past year has been challenging, emotionally exhausting, and often confusing.

Donations * - The grant revenue recognized includes $2M of our roughly $3.2M Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan, as well as an additional $550k related to relief funds provided by the CARES Act. We expect the PPP loan to be mostly or completely forgiven. ** - During fiscal year 2020, Cedar Community sold two lots on Big Cedar Lake, generating a combined net proceeds of approximately $2.3M, which was used to fund both capital improvements and ongoing operations. *** - These expenses were incurred directly as a result of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Included are additional salary costs due to expanded staffing needs (meal delivery, screening, resident support), salary premiums (including our front-line health care professionals), personal protective equipment, and additional disinfection supplies and services.

“Our last fiscal year started incredibly strong from an operational perspective, but as the pandemic emerged in the spring of 2020, we experienced significant challenges due to COVID-specific expenses. During that time we saw increased labor costs due, in part, to screening at our entrances, biweekly COVID testing of team members, and wage premiums for front-line health care workers.

Additionally, we absorbed dramatically increased supply costs due to the massive amounts of personal protective equipment and testing kits. The federal and state funding we received was instrumental in the early months of the crisis and we look forward to a steady recovery and a return to more normal operations.”
