CEDAR COMMUNITY ANNOUNCES NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Nicole Pretre Chief Executive Officer

After a comprehensive nine-month national search, the Cedar Community Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Nicole Pretre as its new Chief Executive Officer—the fourth in Cedar Community’s nearly 70-year history. Nicole most recently served Cedar Community as the Vice President of Development and is in her tenth year of serving the organization in administration, business development, marketing, and philanthropy. She has served on the executive leadership team since 2015 and brings nearly 20 years of healthcare and senior living experience to the CEO role. “Nicole’s demonstrated strategic leadership skills, strong local and national network, and innovative talents combined with her extensive education and background, as well as her passion for serving the needs of our community under the guidance of our faith-based mission, made her our top candidate,” says Joe Carlson, Chairman of Cedar Community’s Board of Directors.

“I am extremely honored for this opportunity to serve our Cedar Community family of residents and team members in the role of chief executive officer,” says Nicole. “I am privileged to work with compassionate and dedicated team members and volunteers, and I believe we have an exciting future ahead for Cedar Community.

I look forward to working to advance our mission of providing life-enhancing relationships, services, and environments for our residents and team members.”

Nicole holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Communications from the University of WisconsinMadison, and a Master of Science degree in Gerontology and Management of Aging Services from the University of Massachusetts-Boston. She is a Credentialed Professional Gerontologist (CPG) through the National Association of Professional Gerontologists. Within the greater community, Nicole serves on the West Bend Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the United Way of Washington County Board of Directors. She is also a steering committee member of Milwaukee Women inc, and a member of TEMPO Milwaukee.

The board also extends a sincere thank you to retiring CEO Lynn W. Olson. “Lynn has been a strong leader during his tenure, guiding Cedar Community through change, and building a solid foundation for a bright future,” says Joe. “He has also been tireless in serving the needs and ensuring the safety of our residents. Together with our team members, he has led us through the unprecedented risks that COVID-19 created for our residents. We will be forever grateful for the legacy he will leave and for his positive impact on so many residents, team members, and families.”

Cedar Community announces promotions Hope and renewal These words keep coming into my mind as we, and the world around us, begin to emerge from a global pandemic. We have experienced so much change and faced so many challenges this past 16 months, but we always did so together, and always with the wellbeing of our residents and team members at the heart of it all. There is hope and renewal all around us. And, I must admit, these words have even more meaning to me now as we move forward with our leadership transition.

It has been a whirlwind these past few days and weeks since my appointment as the new chief executive officer of Cedar Community. I want to sincerely thank all of the team members, residents, donors, family members, volunteers, and those in the greater community who have sent such kind and gracious words of congratulations to me. Your words of encouragement, support, and confidence fill me with hope as we begin to slowly return to the joyful and engaging community we are.

We all share our gratitude with our retiring Coach of an Excellent Organization, Lynn Olson. We wish Godspeed as he begins his own renewal through the next phase of his life’s journey with his family. On behalf of the board of directors, team members, residents, and volunteers, I thank him for his dedication to Cedar Community.

I also thank members of our board of directors for their enduring dedication. They have committed their ongoing support and guidance as I begin my new leadership journey.

It is a privilege to step into this role and I am humbled by this opportunity and their generosity of time and talents.

I pledge to all of our residents and family members, team members, donors, and volunteers that I will remain steadfast in my dedication to Cedar Community’s mission. With Cedar Community’s recent promotion of Nicole Pretre to chief executive officer, the development and marketing and sales team is pleased to share that Sarah Malchow will step into the role of vice president of development. In her tenure at Cedar Community, Sarah has elevated not only the philanthropy program, she has developed key external relationships within the greater community on behalf of Cedar Community. She will continue to lead fundraising efforts, as well as step into the role of supporting and managing the corporate marketing and sales teams at Cedar Community. Sarah will also serve as a member of the Administrative Council, and manage all internal and external communications.

Carrie Sturn will step into the role of marketing director for Cedar Community. Carrie will add the additional responsibilities of managing our key marketing strategy, along with the public relations, social media, events, and advertising that are so critical to our success.

It is truly a season of hope and renewal. I am excited and positive about the bright future ahead for our Cedar Community family. I look forward to taking this journey together and am deeply grateful for your ongoing support.

Providing a safe environment and peace of mind 06

In 2017, Ila Gaynor’s six children had a difficult decision to make— finding a safe place for her to live. In the months prior they were beginning to notice some memory loss. They also noticed some significant dietary changes as she started to eat a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and store-bought cookies. Calls came from concerned church members and neighbors who were all noticing the changes and worried for her safety. She was 83 years old and was recovering from a recent surgery. Making the move to assisted living seemed like the best decision as they tried in-home care but it just wasn’t enough to keep her safe, happy, and healthy.

Ila lived on Big Cedar Lake with her husband, Jack, since 1961. Jack passed away in 2013, shortly after celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary. Three of her children in the West Bend area, Sue Kapke, Bill Gaynor, and Elizabeth Sterman, began the thoughtful process of researching facilities for their mom. They toured several retirement communities, but Sue remembers her mom saying, “If there ever comes a time when I need to move, I want to live at Cedar Community.”

Since the family was most impressed with the living options available at Cedar Community’s memory care campus, The Cottages, it was easy to honor her wish.

The reasons for choosing Cedar Community were many. They liked the idea of the “neighborhood” layout, the amount of natural light throughout the facility, open areas, modern and comfortable design, and the beautifully landscaped outdoor courtyard. “When Mom walks outside of her room she is immediately in her neighborhood where she can find a place to sit, socialize, watch TV, or play a game.

She can enjoy walks around the neighborhood because the layout is a simple square with no dead-end hallways,” says Elizabeth. “I enjoy hearing the staff greet her by name, not only in her own neighborhood, but anywhere inside or outside the facility,” says Sue. The family also has peace of mind knowing she is safe in a secure facility and team members are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The family was in agreement when the time came for Ila to move. While some had considered the option of caring for her in their own homes, they felt it really wasn’t in their mom’s best interest. Ila was very social and liked to be engaged in various activities—especially card games and music. “Faith, exercise, and choir are most important to Mom and she gets all of that here. Chaplain Robert is also wonderful, offering Bible study for residents,” says Sue. The family appreciates the Life Enrichment team members who know the interests of each resident and invite them to join in the activities. “I am so impressed with the staff. They know the little things about my mom and what’s important to her.

They honestly care and show compassion when it comes to redirecting her and reminding her to use her walker or where her purse is—something very important to her since she was the one in charge of the money growing up,” says Bill.

All in all, family members are often at a loss for words when expressing their awe and appreciation for Cedar Community team members who constantly go above and beyond in caring for their mom and tending to her daily needs.

When issues do arise or there are questions or concerns, the family feels they are resolved quickly. They appreciate the comprehensive team approach to care that includes rehabilitation, nursing, and life enrichment activities all working together in the resident’s best interest. One of the family members has a mother-in-law currently living at another senior living facility, and when her son goes to visit, he often comments how different it is from The Cottages. “There is definitely a quality of life here. Mom is not just sitting around doing nothing. Even during COVID, staff tried so hard to keep the residents engaged,” says Elizabeth.

While living at The Cottages, the family has noticed a calm look on their mom’s face because she has a regular daily routine in a quiet and soothing environment. “Mom does

also have moments of anxiety. The staff knows this very well and does a great job of redirecting her. I’ve taken calls to help staff ease Mom’s anxiety as well,” says Sue. The decision to move their mom was not an easy one, but it was one on which they all agreed. “Our mom has always been the glue that holds our family together. The 17 grandkids and seven great-grandchildren are closer because of her,” says Sue. If the grandkids were potty-trained, Ila and Jack would take them on a seven to 10-day vacation each year. Oftentimes, they would have up to seven grandkids on a trip! Ila was a special education teacher for 40 years— so she enjoyed having children around her. She still enjoys time with her grandchildren as they visit her neighborhood as often as they can.

For others considering a similar, and tough decision, the family wants others to know that there is comfort in the knowledge that their loved one is being cared for in such a safe environment. While they know there is often guilt involved in these types of decisions, they remain certain that it was what Ila needed to be happy and healthy. “She looks amazing because she is well taken care of. Mom saved her whole life and she deserves really good care and I am so grateful that it’s available in this area,” says Elizabeth. Sue agrees, “As she lives out this part of her life, she is allowed the opportunity to continue enriching her life in ways she always has, just in a different environment.” The family also likes that their mom—who has always been very social—can interact with others her own age.

Oftentimes cost can be a deciding factor when choosing a facility. And for Ila’s family that was no different. But her children took a thoughtful look at how that cost is translated over 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In their estimation it is money well and wisely spent for the type of care Ila receives, which includes: a beautiful environment, feeding, bathing, dressing, structured activities, social interaction, safe outings, compassionate care, and so much more. “When choosing a facility, you should base your decision on the feeling you have when you first walk in. When it feels like home, you know it’s right,” says Bill. “I did learn that grand entrances to a facility are not the most important thing to look for,” says Sue. Ila has lived at The Cottages for over three years and continues to enjoy her time there. She enjoys the activities and the people and is well taken care of by team members.

Sue and Elizabeth recently signed up to volunteer at The Cottages and are looking forward to being able to play games and interact with their mom and other residents in group settings.

The Cottages administrator ensures seamless care The Cottages Administrator Jen Fullhart began her career at Cedar Community in 2013 as a scheduler.

She served in that role for about two years before moving to human resources, where she focused on employee relations—including retention and turnover. Jen has a bachelor’s degree in health care administration and earned her master’s degree in human resources in 2018. After graduating with her master’s, she took on a new role at The Cottages—providing human resource and administrative support. Today, she focuses her attention primarily on the administrative side, which is a position that complements both her degrees and serves the residents well.

As The Cottages administrator, Jen is responsible for the day-to-day operations and team member staffing and leads our efforts in following the complex and rigorous state and federal compliance guidelines and regulatory codes. Jen also assures that residents are receiving prescribed care plans at the highest quality of care, and supports the team members on all three shifts. One of her daily highlights is visiting each of the three neighborhoods, enjoying time spent with residents. “I love listening to the residents’ stories and hearing their quick-witted humor. It’s also great to see the wonderful team working together interacting with residents.

Everyone does a phenomenal job, making residents a top priority,” says Jen. She especially credits the team for keeping residents active and engaged during COVID, when families were only allowed window visits.

Cedar Community has allowed Jen to use her skills and advance in her career, “I was drawn to Cedar Community because I wanted a place where I could grow and develop my skills.”

Amy Meyer, Vice President of Assisted Living, notes that “Jen moved to The Cottages as a stepping stone in her career and loved it too much to leave! As the face of Cedar Community’s memory care, we are so blessed to have her. Her background in human resources complements her administrator role. She is truly dedicated to her residents and the caregivers who serve them.”

Jen works full time at The Cottages and when not working at Cedar Community she enjoys competitive weight lifting. She also works as a nutrition and weight lifting coach, often starting her day at 4:30 a.m.

Cedar Community offers best-in-class memory care Cedar Community offers an innovative, best-in-class memory care program for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia at The Cottages.

Keeping residents active and engaged Erin Faust, Director of Life Enrichment, has had a challenging year—keeping memory care residents active and engaged during COVID restrictions. Erin and her team have navigated the challenges with humor and good spirits. Life Enrichment team members provided one-on-one visits with residents, often incorporating exercise into their daily conversations, by walking laps both inside the building and around the outside courtyard.

“We were fortunate to have good weather last summer and get outside as much as possible,” says Erin.

Those outside days also included socially-distanced pontoon boat rides with only four residents per outing. It was no small task driving a small number of residents from The Cottages Campus to the Cedar Lake Campus and back again for the next touring group.

Other activities included games, craft projects, nail painting, virtual check-ins with family, rolling treat carts that included grasshoppers on St. Patrick’s Day, and sliders on National Cheeseburger Day. Christmastime included light rides to Enchantment in the Park with four residents at a time, heading back to the Cottages, sanitizing the bus, and taking another four residents. “It was important for us to provide some normalcy for the residents in a time that was challenging for all,” says Erin. A generous grant from one of our corporate sponsors provided gifts that were given to residents at a socially-distanced Christmas luncheon, along with a surprise visit from Santa, played by one of our wonderful BSG Maintenance employees. Families also dropped off gifts for the residents to open on Christmas morning. “To see the expressions on our residents’ faces each time was priceless and worth the extra effort it took to provide activities and special moments.”

Erin never thought she would miss calling Bingo numbers but is happy to resume some “normal” activities with the residents following new protocols for disinfection—keeping the health and safety of the residents at the forefront.

Thanks to Judy Steffes and funds raised from her Amazing Ride, Karen Darga, Cedar Community Music Therapist, will be purchasing exercise balls and drumsticks for drumming fitness. Music appreciation and other small group activities are occurring again as well.

“Erin and her team have been providing person-centered care long before the healthcare industry named it as such. Everything we do at The Cottages is driven by the resident, their needs, and desires,” says Amy Meyer, Vice President of Assisted Living. “Erin does an amazing job of making every resident feel as if they are the most important—because they are!”

BUTTERFLY RELEASE 2021 Cedar Community residents will enjoy the 12th annual Butterfly Release and Celebration of Life this coming August. The event will take place in person for our residents and virtually for our friends and neighbors in the community.

Cedar Community residents will again enjoy activities and crafts with our Life Enrichment team, photo ops with our life-sized butterfly wings (courtesy of our friends at Horicon Bank), an interactive memorial wall, an uplifting and encouraging celebration of life message from our Ministry team, food, and fellowship.

Resident events will take place on campus the first week of August. The virtual event is Saturday, Aug. 14 at 10:30 a.m. with the posting of our video and links to our virtual butterfly memorial garden online.

SUMMER. I LOVE IT. Julie Jennings Vice President of Ministry

It is the season of heat during which I work outside as much as I can and work out as much of the stress I carry in my body as I can. It is a season of forgetting the bitter cold of winter and the impatience of waiting for spring to arrive and— maybe stay awhile. It is the season of beach trips and getaways, of family vacations, and family reunions. Where I come from in the southern states of Alabama and Georgia, it is the season that lasts— well—darn near forever. So it always feels to me like the season of unending possibilities and light.

Summer is finally upon us, bringing at least more possibilities than we had last summer for working and “forgetting,” for family time and respite time, for fun, for relaxing, for anything, and for nothing.

This year, in addition to bringing back many of the “normal” summer attractions—backyard barbecues, concert series, and local fairs—summer brings something else. This year, summer also brings deferred rituals of goodbye, delayed mourning, and different rhythms of grief as families and friends finally get to memorialize their loved ones who died during the pandemic.

All that summer brings this year—the warmth; opportunities to gather more freely; return of recreational activities; the re-creation of mind, body, and spirit; and the marking of significant events— reminds us we are a species created for relationship and community. For being human together in joy and laughter and in sorrow and tears.

May summer bring all of this, and more, to each and all of us.

Environmental w When talking about wellbeing, there is more to the topic than just physical activity and healthy eating. At Cedar Community, we strive to support the seven core areas of wellbeing: emotional, environmental, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, and vocational. We will explore these seven areas through education, programs, and resources.

Wellbeing is unique to each person. We have different minds, bodies, people, and environmental factors influencing our lives daily. Factors affecting your environmental wellbeing and health include things that surround you each day in your home and out in the community.

Pleasant, soothing, or stimulating surroundings support your wellbeing.

Interacting with nature and creating enjoyable personal settings support wellness, too. Below are some tips to help you enhance your environmental wellbeing:

Make your home healthier

Look around your home. Do you know what ingredients are in your household goods and products? Some chemicals can harm your health if too much gets into your body. Being aware of potentially harmful substances in your home and clearing them out can help keep you healthy. · Clean with non-toxic products. · Dust using a damp rag. · Open a window or use a fan to improve air circulation when cleaning.

Make your home a nurturing setting

Having a healthy home is not all about cleanliness and non-toxic products. Consider what you see when you look around you. Are there things that make you smile? Do you have objects or spaces that bring you peace? If not, consider adding these to your home. · Create a focal point for your personal wellbeing. · Consider what adjustments you might make to control noise and/or lighting to help you feel calm or more energetic in your own home. · Display things that bring you joy—so you can see them daily.

Improve your air quality and your health

The combination of high temperatures, poor air circulation, pollution, and airborne particles can brew up an unhealthy mixture in the air.

These substances can make it harder to breathe and can drain your energy. Follow these helpful tips to avoid exposure! · Avoid outdoor afternoon activities on warm days, since this is when air pollution is at its highest.

Born and raised in Elkhart Lake, she has a passion for the community and for promoting its many benefits. “My goal as executive director is to take the Chamber of Commerce to the next level and really promote the many top-notch restaurants, stores, and businesses we have who help support the community, along with Road America, and many golf courses,” says Melissa.

Maintenance-free living Cedar Community’s Elkhart Lake Campus opened in 2007, and in the year following, Kurt Krzyzak was hired as the maintenance technician. His job includes a little bit of everything and residents will tell you he is one of the main reasons the campus runs so smoothly. If something needs fixing, Kurt attends to it, usually in the same day.

His responsibilities include lawn cutting (his favorite part of the job), landscape work, snow removal, and making minor fixes and repairs at the main building, the assisted living apartments, and each of the 40 independent living homes. In addition to his other tasks of regular maintenance activities (maintaining air filters and handlers and regular checks of generators and fire extinguishers), Kurt receives about two to three maintenance calls each day from residents. “There isn’t one adjective that can describe Kurt. He is everything to everyone. He always gets the work done and it is always a happy get together when we see Kurt,” says Jean Roberts. Kurt also enjoys the one-on-one with residents— getting to know them and their stories when he is in their homes attending to their maintenance requests. “I don’t have to worry about maintenance issues at our Elkhart Lake Campus because I know Kurt will always take care of the place as if it were his own. He is a great asset and committed longtime employee. I value his dedication and willingness to always go the extra mile,” says Todd Miller, Vice President of Facilities Services.

Three couples make the move from Florida to Cedar Community After meeting in a Florida retirement community and becoming the best of friends, three couples all decided to make the move to Cedar Community at the same time. Tom and Carol Hanson and Dick and Rean Seekins, all Wisconsinites, decided to move back home to Wisconsin and settled at Cedar Community’s independent living apartments in West Bend. Frank and Jean Roberts came for a visit and while they weren’t fond of the apartment lifestyle at Cedar Ridge, they were introduced to Cedar Community’s Elkhart Lake Campus where they fell in love with their new independent living home. They customized the space with the addition of an enclosed porch and now have plenty of room to host their

three sons and their families— including four grandsons, and one great-grandson.

The Robertses became actively involved in the Cedar Community lifestyle, participating in many local activities—including a “dine around” which introduced them to many restaurants and the Elkhart Lake community. “Since we weren’t from here, it was great for us to be introduced to the many wonderful restaurants in the area,” says Jean. Frank, having an interest in photography, thought it would be a wonderful idea to add a camera club for residents and the greater community.

He put an ad in the local paper and today the club has about a dozen members. Wanting to learn more,

Frank found Mike McGill, a self-taught photographer, who shares his expertise with the club. Mike also sends out a monthly newsletter with a picture offering photography tips and tricks.

The Elkhart Lake Camera Club has enjoyed outings to the Mitchell Park Domes in Milwaukee, Lambeau Field, fireworks displays, and hiking trails.

These outings all help club members learn how to photograph in a variety of settings. The club is open to everyone of every level. Some have point and shoot cameras while others have hightech equipment, and some simply even shoot with their cell phones. “It’s a very supportive group. If there is something you want to learn, all you have to do is ask,” agree Frank and Mike.

Often, if a resident is interested in a hobby, chances are good that others are interested in learning more as well. In the future, Frank hopes to start a barbershop harmony singing group—another passion of his and one he has participated in for over 18 years.

RESIDENT PROFILE Rita and Dale Zarling

Dale was born in Milwaukee, the older of two boys, and attended Germantown High School. His lovely bride, Rita, was born and raised on a dairy farm near Richfield. She attended St. Hubert’s Catholic grade school and graduated from Hartford Union High School. Rita has an older sister and brother and one younger brother.

Dale and Rita were married October 11, 1980, after meeting at a mutual friend’s wedding two years earlier. Dale was one of the attendants in their friend’s wedding party and Rita was the organist. It was an instant attraction and soon after they started dating. They settled in Slinger after their marriage.

Dale worked multiple jobs developing new skills through the years. He started out as a dishwasher in a restaurant, took on lawn mowing jobs, and worked in the service department at a Firestone store. Later, he worked in the parts department, then in the warehouse at Bell Industries—a travel trailer dealership. Eventually he built up his own part-time refrigeration and air conditioning business, and served as a part-time janitor at Slinger High School. Dale served as a volunteer firefighter with the Slinger Fire Department for 20 years. In1995 he received the Slinger Advancement Association Volunteer of the Year Award and was also named as an honorary lifetime member of department.

Dale also served as a lay minister for several local UCC churches and Cedar Community. He was president of St. John’s UCC Church and served on the church council for six years. He served as a Cedar Chaplain and in the Stephen Ministry.

Beginning in 2008, Dale also worked part-time at Cedar Community helping with lawn care, snow removal, and painting. He remembers sleeping on couches in the Learning Center building (now called Cedar Lodge) during heavy snowfalls—his snow plowing equipment parked there ready to go. He enjoyed interacting with residents and team members. In fact, of all the jobs he’s had, Dale states that the best part of his career by far was working with Scott Risse, Grounds and Fleet Manager, and the grounds crew for those seven years.

Later, Dale took on a new role at Cedar Community— fixing, maintaining, cleaning, selling, and delivering durable medical equipment, a new division at that time. When that division was eventually closed, he took a job with Roskopf’s travel trailer dealership until his recent retirement. Now, Dale assists with the Cedar Community maple syrup project and serves on the Village SAE Committee, a resident-driven group organizing social events.

After high school Rita worked in accounts receivable at Badger Lab located in Jackson. Then, in 1977 she began her banking career—her professional path included time at Richfield State Bank, First Ozaukee Savings Bank, and First National Bank of Hartford until she retired last year.

Before Christmas every year, Rita would take a week of vacation—baking almost 3,000 Christmas cookies. She says that’s been their gift to family, friends, and neighbors and to the church bake sale. She is very organized with a log book and charts keeping track of recipes, ingredients, amounts, totals, and deliveries to make.

She keeps busy on weekends—playing organ every Sunday at St. John’s UCC Church in Slinger, playing several times a month at Resurrection Catholic Church in Allenton, and playing as a substitute at St. Peter’s Church in Slinger when needed. Rita also participates in the Bells of Cedar Community (a handbell choir), and the Village Choir (a vocal choir). She also plays the piano for chapel services at Cedar Community’s independent living apartments. In her free time Rita has made some beautiful hand stitching and small quilt projects. She also enjoys coloring as a quiet calming hobby.

The Zarlings have two sons and have been active as a family in scouting. Rita was a den mother and Dale was scoutmaster for many years. Both sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout—something Dale and Rita are very proud of!

Today, David works for Apple, and Scott will be entering the priesthood at St. Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee this summer.

In the course of their marriage, the Zarlings have enjoyed traveling wherever their car would take them. For Rita’s first trip out of state they drove to Nashville for their honeymoon. They have enjoyed road trips to Arizona, Florida, and Virginia many times. Their favorite travels are anywhere in Wisconsin, especially Door County, and the New Glarus area. Today, they can be found frequently riding through Cedar Community’s independent living neighborhoods in their golf cart. Dale and Rita are also part of a local square dance group and have enjoyed it since they took lessons in 2000. Rita even sewed their square dance outfits. Claim to fame—Rita’s uncle is Tony Radermacher, the leader of a local polka band!

With Dale’s job experience at Cedar Community he was familiar with the great team members and the beauty of the campus. They couldn’t wait to move in and in 2011, when they were old enough to meet Cedar Community’s age requirements of 55 and better, they made the move! Rita notes this is the third place she’s ever lived. And, they both agree—the best!

Rita is also musically talented. She started taking organ lessons in fifth grade and by eighth grade she played the

outstanding team members Every quarter, Cedar Community recognizes team members who go above and beyond their everyday tasks for our residents, families, volunteers, and their fellow team members. Cedar Community is proud to announce our team members of the quarter award winners: Casey Ganiere, RN Case Manager, and Bob Wells, Chaplain Casey Ganiere’s team members nominated her as Team Member of the Quarter, saying: “Casey always takes on extra assignments with a smile.” “When her schedule is packed, she always says ‘I should be alright.’” “Casey has a great sense of humor and provides needed comic relief.” “We are blessed to have Casey as part of the Cedar Community Home Health and Hospice team.”

Casey is an RN Case Manager with Cedar Community’s Hospice division. She started her career path as a certified nursing assistant in Milwaukee. During this time she was attending Waukesha County Technical College, pursuing her licensed practical nurse (LPN) degree. Casey worked in Milwaukee for another year and a half as an LPN and then made the move to West Bend to be closer to her mother. Her mom spoke highly of Cedar Community so Casey applied. In 2007 she joined the Cedar Community team, working on the rehabilitation floor.

She felt a calling to continue her education so she returned to school, attending Moraine Park Technical College. In 2017 Casey graduated with her associate’s registered nursing degree.

In early 2018 a position in hospice became available. “I always felt a calling toward end-of-life care. All the extra stuff in life goes away and the really important stuff comes into focus,” says Casey. She enjoys being part of a team that focuses on the mind, body, and spirit—not only for the patients in their care, but for the families as well. “Our team looks at patient care in a holistic way, getting through what is likely the toughest time in someone’s life,” says Casey. She enjoys getting to know the patients and their families, and getting to hear their life stories. This calling allows her to really focus in on what’s important to them—even if that means making a phone call to a relative they haven’t spoken to in years and helping make that connection. “We are blessed to have Casey. She has the biggest heart and it shows in everything she does. Her dedication to her patients, their families, and our team is exceptional. She is always able to help her team with anything. Casey keeps us all laughing and her smile is contagious! She truly deserves this recognition,” says Nancy Chevremont, Administrator of Cedar Community Home Health and Hospice.

Casey enjoys working at Cedar Community and feels the standard of care is above and beyond. “I think being a not-for-profit Christian-based organization makes a difference and is emphasized across the spectrum of all levels of care,” says Casey. She feels blessed to be part of such a great organization where every patient is treated with respect and dignity. Casey has worked with geriatric populations since she was 18 years old and feels privileged to work with patients who have such remarkable histories. “It really brings history to life when you talk with people who served in WWII or were at Pearl Harbor. It’s a first-hand account of what you read in a textbook,” says Casey.

When not at work, Casey enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter and their dogs. As a counter to the demands of offering such comprehensive care, she also enjoys quiet downtime to just relax. Casey is continuing her education—attending Concordia University in pursuit of her bachelor’s degree in nursing. Casey is a third-generation nurse.

“I love being a nurse and have a passion for caring for people,” says Casey.

Bob Wells has enjoyed a variety of careers from priesthood to teaching—coming full circle as a member of our ministry team at Cedar Community. After graduating from high school, Bob attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on a baseball scholarship, majoring in accounting. During his first year as an undergraduate, two important experiences altered his path and purpose in life. A conversation with the campus minister led him to begin his journey toward priesthood instead. He entered the seminary after his sophomore year.

His educational journey included St. Francis de Sales College in Milwaukee, studying theology and philosophy; Pontifica Università Gregoriana in Rome, studying theology; and time spent at National Louis University in Chicago, culminating in a Master of Arts in teaching. After completing these initial studies, Bob served as an ordained minister in the Roman Catholic Church and the United Church of Christ, as well as a high school English teacher. “I have been blessed in the journey of life with the opportunity to walk on a professional path that has been interwoven with threads of full-time ordained ministry among various faith communities and full-time teaching experiences,” says Bob. In 1986, he was ordained in the Milwaukee Archdiocese and served there for 14 years before his path took another direction.

Later, Bob returned to college for his master’s degree in education and then taught for another 16 years. During that time, he also explored a return to ministry within the church. In 2009 he received a call to serve through the United Church of Christ.

He served as a pulpit supply minister for 10 years. In 2019, he decided to retire from teaching with the hope of returning to full-time pastoral ministry. On his 33rd anniversary of ordination, he learned of the position at Cedar Community in the Home Health and Hospice division. “Caring for my parents in their final years shaped me and I knew that was the direction I wanted to go,” says Bob. Bob joined Cedar Community in July of 2019. “Bob brings a deep compassion that he pours out upon residents, family members, and team members alike. Bob holds the grim and the glorious moments of life within his calm and attentive presence and weaves them together with wisdom, humor, poetry, and abundant grace. He is always willing to take on new challenges and seeks out ways to serve individuals, departments, and our entire community,” says Julie Jennings, Vice President of Ministry.

Bob is grateful and blessed to be serving with a wonderful team of chaplains as well as Cedar Community Home Health and Hospice team members. He appreciates the opportunity to serve once again—supporting our residents and team members with love and prayer. “Serving Cedar Community, the past two years, I have experienced and witnessed in countless ways the truth of what the spiritual writer Henri Nouwen once wrote: ‘Real human dignity is found in giving as well as receiving.’ This is at the heart of what I believe makes working at Cedar Community such a blessing,” says Bob. In his spare time, Bob enjoys digging in the dirt in his “naturalized yard,” camping, hiking, listening to music, experiencing live theater performances, playing golf, supporting Wisconsin sports teams, and dabbling with writing poetry.

Bob’s team members nominated him for Team Member of the Quarter, saying, “Bob checks in to see how we are doing and offers help if he can.” “His gentle and caring soul is amazing.” “Bob never makes you feel that you are taking up too much of his time.”

Residents at Cedar Community’s independent living apartments who don’t drive are still able to enjoy some shopping or get to their appointments, courtesy of our volunteer van drivers. For a small fee, residents can schedule a ride Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Transportation is available to and from destinations within the general West Bend area, typically from Hwy 33 to Pleasant Valley Road. Most residents agree, the cost of the ride is far cheaper than maintaining, fueling, and insuring their own vehicle. Prior to the pandemic, drivers would often take two to three residents each trip.

Currently, with precautions in place, only one rider is allowed at a time.

Driving our friends and neighbors as a volunteer van driver is just one of the many volunteer opportunities available at Cedar Community—whether you are a resident or someone from the greater community.

It’s a great way to meet new people and the schedule is very flexible. Cedar Community recognizes and is deeply grateful for the service and dedication of all our van drivers.

Highlights of some of our longtime drivers…

Harley Koehler, a West Bend community resident, retired 18 years ago from Walter’s Building and Construction as a manager. Harley’s son Randy worked for Cedar Community at that time. It was through Randy that he became acquainted with Scott Risse, Cedar Community Grounds and Fleet Manager. Harley was hired to cut the grass, spray weeds, and help maintain the gardens at Cedar Community’s independent living apartments. He worked 26 hours a week. “I loved it; it was fun,” says Harley. In winter he helped with regular maintenance of the building and interior painting. After several years at Cedar Community he officially retired (his second retirement if you are keeping track!). However, Harley feels like he never really retired because he has continued volunteering for the last 10 years. He spends time driving for Cedar Community and Interfaith Caregivers. Harley drives one day a week.

As a volunteer van driver, he has the benefit of getting to know people. “I love working with people and helping them with whatever I can. The thank yous I get from the residents are worth more than a one-hundred-dollar bill,” says Harley. His wife, Alice, fills in for him if he can’t make his scheduled driving day. Harley enjoys staying active, including hunting and maintaining his 90-acre property in Shawano.

It was 2014 when Bill Wallace made the move to Cedar Community’s independent living apartments from his home in West Bend. He was ready for the move and it was time to downsize. Having friends and a relative already at Cedar Community, he knew he was ready for a new quality of life. “The people here are so friendly, courteous, and you meet new friends all the time,” says Bill. To stay busy, he inquired about being a van driver and has been driving for three years. “It’s so nice to be able to help people and they appreciate it so much. It’s tough when you can’t drive your own vehicle anymore so this is a great service,” says Bill. When not driving, Bill enjoys Monday coffee socials with his neighbors, and gardening in his plot at the apartments (another amenity residents can enjoy). Bill stays active by walking the campus trails and watching the construction progress of the new Cedar Ridge Homes.

Paula Pretre moved to Cedar Community’s independent living apartments with her husband, John, in 2014. After living in Florida for 14 years, they moved back to be closer to family. Paula enjoys the friendly people at Cedar Community. “It’s nice having a closeknit family outside of your own close-knit family. I think that’s one of the reasons why I started volunteering as a van driver. I get time with the residents to learn more about them,” says Paula.

She enjoys driving and she felt it was something she could do. It’s been about five years since she started driving—taking over her husband’s spot when he “retired.” She noted that adding a day of driving to her weekly schedule of water aerobics four days a week was a good reason for her to get out of bed every day! Duties of our van drivers include opening up the door, assisting with passenger loading and unloading as needed, and folding and stowing walkers.

Sometimes, when the seasons are changing or it’s recently snowed, Paula may take a back road or a longer route for the residents to enjoy the scenery. “It’s their time out since they don’t drive and they enjoy seeing the sites,” says Paula.

Longtime independent living resident Don Boerner has lived at the Cedar Ridge Campus for 17 years. Prior to his move, he was already very familiar with Cedar Community because his mother-in-law was a resident in skilled nursing care. After holding patiently on the waiting list for his ideal apartment—one with a view of the pond on the south side of the campus— Don feels Cedar Community is “home.” Don has been a van driver for over seven years because he loves to drive. “All my life, my wife and I enjoyed trips all over the United States,” says Don. He lost his wife six years ago but still takes many trips on his own to visit family members who are scattered all around the States. Being a van driver is a great opportunity to meet new people and learn about their lives—another reason Don spends two days each week driving.

When Don is not busy driving he enjoys reading and tending to his garden plot along with his daughter, who also lives at Cedar Community. He plays Sheepshead and often can be found visiting with other residents over a meal or a salted caramel kringle.

A. Skilled home health care is provided by a team of licensed and/or certified clinicians

under the guidance of your physician. Registered nurses, licensed therapists, and other health professionals work with your physician to provide the needed services to help you reach and maintain your maximal level of function, health, and comfort.

Supportive home care services are considered nonclinical. The focus is on providing personal and supportive care in your home, with the goal of helping you stay in your home. Services are provided by nonmedical caregivers.

Are you ready to venture out and absorb the beauty of summer? Would you enjoy creating a work of art and experimenting with a new medium? Do you want to gather in a special place with special people? Look no further than our United Church Camps, Inc. (UCCI) sites— Cedar Valley, Moon Beach, and Pilgrim Center!

All three outdoor ministry sites have unique programming for adults, youth, and multi-generational events. Offerings include quilting weekends, family camp, Memory Camp, an Active Adult Adventure Retreat, and more. Close to home, Cedar Valley invites guests and visitors back to our in-person events and gatherings. Watch our website for an invitation to a Re-United 2021 Open House! Sign up for a creative workshop in our art studio, book a personal retreat, a family reunion, or plan a larger event—our team is ready to welcome and serve you!

Partners In Caring™ 2021 ORDINARY PEOPLE—EXTRAORDINARY IMPACT After a year that can only be described as unexpected and unprecedented, I think we are all looking forward to a gradual return to some sense of normalcy—visiting with friends, hugging loved ones, and seeing beautiful smiles.

And while we welcome the rhythm of the familiar in our day-to-day lives, I think it is important to celebrate the ways in which ordinary people like you and I have had an extraordinary impact on others. As we close in on the end of our Partners In Caring 2021 annual campaign (you’ll recall the campaign year runs from July 1 through June 30), I wanted to share some wins YOU’VE helped make possible: · We welcomed 82 NEW DONORS to our Partners In Caring team so far this year, joining with 340 other individuals and families who committed to helping others in the past year. Some donors joined us through memorial gifts, gifts in honor of a friend or loved one, or simply, just because they wanted to help. Who says philanthropy isn’t a team sport? · Some donors passed along a portion (or even ALL!) of their government stimulus checks, telling us, “Others need it more than I do.” Thank you for paying it forward! · One donor decided to share his bank’s credit card loyalty points as a charitable gift, resulting in a generous donation. He did good things while doing good business! · A number of our faithful Partners In Caring friends and loved ones left us this year. But in their enduring selflessness, they made provision to help others—even in their passing. Their gifts will seed a Partners In Caring Endowment Fund to preserve their legacy of helping others for years to come. We’ll share more about this in our next edition. We are humbled by such generosity.

Cedar Community remains committed to helping friends and neighbors struggling to cover the costs of skilled nursing and long-term care—even with the assistance of Medicaid and other government support. That’s why each and every gift is important—every dollar helps us bring high-quality, dignified, and compassionate care to someone who needs it.
