It was a clear, crisp day in February of 2019, on a Saturday (of course) when the message came out that we had a “flood” on the first and second floors of our Cedar Bay West assisted living building. During a stretch of extremely cold weather a fire suppression sprinkler pipe on the second floor had frozen, then subsequently burst as the weather warmed up, causing significant damage to the first and second floors.

For over a year prior to the flood we had been developing a plan for a phased remodeling of the building, much like we did at our Cedar Community Independent Living Apartments location. Originally planned as a three-phase remodeling, the flood accelerated the plan due to the extensive damage caused in the dining room, lobby, hallways, and a few resident apartments.

We engaged Groth Architects from Cedarburg to develop an updated renovation plan. Moore Construction from Menomonee Falls was brought on board as the construction manager.

While the original scope of the project totaled around $700,000 and covered primarily the areas damaged by the flood, we eventually decided to remodel virtually the entire building. This included modernizing the heating/cooling system, upgrading Wi-Fi technology, new furnishings, and relocating several departments to make them more accessible for residents. The final project cost, including remodeling of several resident apartments, totaled close to $2.2 million.

The project ended up taking longer than originally planned as work had to be temporarily suspended in the early days of the pandemic due to concerns about outside contractors coming in to our buildings. Eventually guidance came out from the CDC and our local health departments that allowed contractors to safely reenter the building. Work was completed by the end of February of 2021.

The project scope included: · Remodeling the entrance and lobby including a new resident bistro, remodeling and relocating the front desk, gathering space for residents and families, and mail area.

· Remodeling of the multi-purpose room, also near the front entrance, to be a more visible and welcoming social space for resident activities such as bingo, movie nights, card games, and more.

· Wi-Fi upgrade to help insure the use of mobile devices to communicate with family members, the use of which jumped dramatically during the past year of the pandemic, is available in all areas.

· Relocating the beauty salon and spa near the front entrance and resident gathering areas to increase visibility and encourage its use.

· Installing new lighting throughout the building consistent with current standards for senior living.

· Adding a spiritual reflection room for residents and families. · Remodeling hallways and resident lounges. · Adding new wellness area with stateof-the-art computerized exercise

An unexpected surprise occurred while we were tearing out a wall near the front entrance of the building. Workers found a time capsule placed behind the cornerstone set in 1974 when construction on the original building began. The capsule contained some fascinating pieces of memorabilia that commemorated the building as one of the first in the country dedicated to caring for people with memory loss.

The rebirth of Cedar Bay West has been a labor of love on the part of team members and residents. The remodeled space is more homelike, more accessible, and more conducive to socializing.

While the pandemic is still limiting the gatherings we can allow, we look forward to the day when residents, families, and friends can once again fill the halls and lobbies of Cedar Bay West with laughter and the spirit of fellowship.

RESIDENT PROFILE

Tom and Margie Kieckhafer Tom was born and raised in West Bend, the older of two. Margie was born in Watertown; she has one younger brother. Her family later moved to West Bend. Tom and Margie both attended West Bend High School. While he was a senior, she was a freshman.

When she was 13 she met Tom on a tennis court. She was there with a friend, whose brother came with Tom. They dated while in high school until he went away to college at Lakeland University in Plymouth. He graduated with a degree in business administration, majoring in economics.

In 1986, while he was working for the West Bend Co., he earned a degree in multinational marketing management from Harvard, attending in Switzerland.

In 1989 he received a degree in Harvard’s advanced management program.

Margie’s mother wanted her to be a nurse so she tried nursing school, but left there to take a job at West Bend Co. where Tom was also employed. She worked there one year until they were married in April 1961. They have five children, three sons and two daughters; the youngest boys are twins. They also have 13 grandchildren, including a set of twins.

Tom’s career at West Bend Co. began as a sales correspondent. He worked for the West Bend Co. for 40 years, from 1960–2000, the last 10 years as president of the company. He traveled a lot, recalling that some years out of three months he was only home two weeks. Job transfers took the family to Palatine, Illinois, then to Salisbury, North Carolina, Raleigh, North Carolina, Brown Deer, Wisconsin, back to Chicago, Illinois; then finally settling in West Bend. Margie noted that they had a baby in each state that Tom worked.

Margie was very supportive of him and she played a big part with the direct sales and retail customers, mainly from Japan. After the children were grown she occasionally traveled with Tom taking them to Hong Kong many times, as well as mainland China, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. She tried to make a point of getting to know the culture and customs of the countries they visited. One time they were scheduled to go to Japan, but at the last minute he could not go, so Margie went alone. She went to a Geisha house, and attended the semi finals for Sumo wrestling. Her interpreter, Missy, was a tremendous help while she was there, helping Margie find her way around and follow their customs and traditions. Other memorable areas they visited were the Great Wall of China and she walked in Tiananmen Square for the experience to step foot on it; she nearly got arrested for getting out of the car which is not allowed.

While president of the West Bend Co., Tom had a great team to work with including manufacturing, finance, and human resources. The majority of the company’s products were made in West Bend such as drip coffee makers, electric skillets, slow cookers, and bread machines. He worked closely with major retailers such as Walmart, K-Mart, and True Value hardware. Sam Walton, founder and president of Walmart and Sam’s Club knew Tom as “Mr. West Bend.” Through customers Tom was able to go to 15 Super Bowl games. Margie was able to attend a few games as well.

Extensive customer contacts allowed them other opportunities, including getting to know ABC sportscaster, Chris Schenkel. They became good friends with Pat Summerall, a former football player and TV sportscaster and Ray Nitschke, Green Bay Packers legend. While living in Palatine their neighbor was Tim McKaskey, who was one of the owners of the Chicago Bears. Tim’s grandfather was George Halas, known as Papa Bear, the original owner.

During the time he was president of the West Bend Co. he was also corporate vice president of its parent company, Premark, along with the sister companies of Tupperware, Wilsonart, and Hobart. Tom retired when Premark was sold to Illinois Tool.

The couple was active in the West Bend community. Tom was a board member of the First National Bank/M&I Bank and chairman and member of St. Joseph’s Hospital Board. Margie was president of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary for one year.

Besides seeing the world with business traveling, Tom and Margie also traveled to Salzburg, Austria, Alaska, and Hawaii.

They owned a vacation home in South Carolina for 22 years, and they now have a vacation home near Lake Tomahawk.

They enjoyed vacations at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Their favorite and most memorable vacation was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren for a week at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. This month, Tom and Margie will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

In his younger days Tom enjoyed golf, fishing, and duck hunting. Margie used to do quilting, sewing, and needlework crafts. Now she enjoys reading and they mostly enjoy time with their family.

Tom and Margie moved to Cedar Community’s independent living apartments in September of 2020. Their mothers lived there in the early days of Cedar Community. They attended the Annual Chili Social and Used Book Sale, took the tour, and discovered how much Cedar Community had changed, and all it has to offer. They were impressed with the friendliness of the residents and team members.

They agreed that moving here from a condominium in West Bend was the best decision they could have made.

Throughout our more than 67-year history of serving the community, Cedar Community has placed a strong emphasis on ensuring that the individual needs of every resident are met.

Over the course of 2020, a sampling of Cedar Community’s customers and their families participated in monthly telephone interviews that included open-ended questions, as well the opportunity to rate Cedar Community in specific categories.

Every month, Cedar Community gathered its real-time survey results to gain a better understanding of the resident’s needs and make improvements when necessary. By qualifying for the Pinnacle Customer Experience Award™, Cedar Community has satisfied the rigorous demand of scoring in the top 15 percent of the nation across a 12-month average.

K4CONNECT TECHNOLOGY ENHANCES RESIDENT EXPERIENCE If there is one thing that most of us have adapted to over this past year, it is how to use technology to stay connected with our family and friends, and as an organization, Cedar Community has used virtual platforms to conduct many of our business functions. Technology certainly is not new to senior living, but it has emerged as a very important part of our lives, keeping us all connected and informed. As we continue to grow and improve, Cedar Community is working on a large project to upgrade the technology infrastructure on all of our campuses. We have also partnered with an organization that will help integrate many of our technology programs and platforms.

While there are hundreds of programs to choose from, K4Connect is bringing many of those solutions together through one single system.

“Our technology solutions help to streamline and unify the team member experience, and the goal is to have a single source of information from which you can distribute relevant information to residents, team members, and families,” says Bethany Gale, K4Connect Growth Director.

The K4Community Plus mobile application allows Cedar Community to use an app for phones and tablets, that will allow for pushing out information and updates, while keeping residents effortlessly connected to family and friends. The app will include menus, event calendars, phone directories, and much more. A group of Cedar Community residents volunteered to test the K4Community Plus app, and they have been using it for several months to provide feedback and help make improvements before it is made available to all residents.

The K4Community Smart Home program will allow residents to easily automate their lights, temperature, and room fans to their comfort, as well as other program options, through the app on their personal smartphones and through a voice-enabled Alexa device. The new Cedar Ridge Homes will all have K4Community Smart Home built, and these options will be available in the future for our existing homes and apartments. One of the key features of the Alexa program is the voice interface is private and secure, and not tied to personal Amazon accounts. The Alexa is de-identified from the residents’ personal information, and is associated with the home or apartment, not the person.

Cedar Community’s wireless and technology upgrade project was supported in part by a loan from Economic Development Washington County (EDWC). Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann presented Cedar Community CEO Lynn W. Olson with the EDWC loan check.

“Voice is one of our most exciting offerings, not only because of ease of use, but it is an easy and exciting way for residents to engage in technology that they maybe never had before,” says Natalie Jones, K4Connect Director of Marketing and Communications. “Technology has also created an incredible level of accessibility for residents who have mobile and visual impairments.

For example, we had a partner with a resident named Joyce who suffered from macular degeneration. She loved to read, and she has used Alexa to help her with her love of reading.”

Cedar Community is proud to be the first senior living community in Wisconsin to adopt the K4Connect program. As the modules are rolled out across all of our campuses, the technology will help create even more enriching and engaging experiences for residents, and it will make it easier to connect to all of the amenities and services Cedar Community has to offer in an up-to-date, immediate platform.

We have searched for it in our times of need. We have claimed it in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. We have clung to it when we had little else to go on.

In the Christian tradition, Easter proclaims the living hope that death (and all the many forms and forces it takes in our living and our dying) does not have the final word. As Christians recently celebrated Easter, the Jewish faithful observed another Passover festival of freedom, commemorating the exodus of the ancient Israelites from slavery to freedom and inviting reflection on modern forms of persecution and hope for liberation.

Embedded beneath these religious observances are acts of violence perpetrated against individuals and entire groups of people. Torture, humiliation, betrayal, excruciating capital punishment, bondage, and forced labor serve as the backdrop for two of the most victorious and hope-filled religious stories ever told.

It is easy to look past those harsh truths and focus on the ends of the stories: resurrection and new life as freed people. The thing is, the ends of these stories more often than not signal beginnings for we who hear them. And, as stories go, they often have a way of repeating themselves if we are not attentive to their details and intentional in our response to them.

So how do we live into the hope of new beginnings promised in these religious stories? We might take our cue from another world religion about to observe a major festival. Muslims will celebrate the month-long Ramadan, beginning April 12. Ramadan is a period of intense selfexamination and spiritual devotion aimed at drawing closer to God and cultivating self-control, gratitude, and compassion for those less fortunate.

Whether we are individuals, congregations, or organizations, it is important to take the time and carefully consider how we are living into hope–for ourselves, for those who depend on us now, and for future generations.

It is also important to summon the courage and examine how we might be perpetuating demeaning attitudes, participating in systems that benefit the few at the expense of the many, and postponing the steps we could take to create needed change.

As we consider and examine, let us remember the God who suffers with the suffering, who leads us from death to life, and who remains close to us as we brave new beginnings.

When talking about wellbeing, there is more to the topic than just physical activity and healthy eating. At Cedar Community, we strive to support the seven core areas of wellbeing: emotional, environmental, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, and vocational.

We will explore these seven areas through education, programs, and resources.

Emotional wellbeing is defined by the National Institute of Health (NIH) as the ability to successfully handle life’s stresses and adapt to change and difficult times. Here are some tips provided by the NIH for improving your emotional wellbeing:

Brighten your outlook

Bouncing back from difficulties faster - resiliency - and holding on to positive emotions longer are signs of emotional wellbeing. Here are some things you can do to develop a more positive mindset: · Forgive yourself. · Remember your good deeds. · Explore your beliefs about the meaning of life.

Reduce stress

We all feel stressed from time to time. When we feel stressed for a long period of time, the effects of that stress can be harmful.

Healthy ways of coping can boost our resilience to it. · Get enough sleep. · Try relaxation methods. · Seek help.

VOCATIONAL

Pursuing meaningful and purposeful endeavors that encourage personal fulfillment and contributing to the wider community.

Get quality sleep

Cope with loss

· Exercise regularly.

· Try not to make any major changes right away after a loss.

· Set a sleep schedule and get up and go to bed around the same time.

· Be patient. Mourning takes time.

Sacrificing sleep is common when we need to get something done or are very busy. This affects our mental and physical health which are vital to our wellbeing. · Limit the use of electronics before bedtime.

Be mindful

Mindfulness encourages us to be aware of the present and all that is going on inside us. This takes practice. Try these suggestions to become more mindful. · Take a walk and enjoy the little things around you. · Practice breathing exercises: breathe deeply through your nose as you count to four, hold for one second and then exhale through your mouth as you count to five. Repeat.

There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Here are a few healthy ways to navigate your difficult journey through loss. · Take care of yourself first, and don’t be afraid to seek professional help if you need it.

Strengthen social connections

Being social doesn’t feel natural to everyone, but it may protect our emotional and physical health and lengthen our lives.

Building healthy support systems can influence our biology and wellbeing. · Take a class or share with others a hobby you enjoy. · Volunteer locally to support something that matters to you, which can even be done from the comfort of your home! · Get active and share good habits with others.

· Practice mindful eating. Pay attention to each bite you take and when you feel full.

COMMUNITY Don’t fall and break your leg! That leg business happened to us in October of 2019 while we were visiting friends in northern Michigan. My wife missed a step and broke her leg. The next day, she was in surgery. Five days later, Carol was tucked into the passenger seat with pillows and blankets as we headed back to our home at Cedar Community, a home we have enjoyed since June of 2016. We moved to Cedar Community at the right time in our lives.

Even before we left the hospital in northern Michigan, the wheels were in motion at Cedar Community. Through the generosity of our many Cedar Community friends, two weeks of meals were lined up with the promise of more, if necessary, along with all the rehab equipment Carol would need. Rehab team members were alerted and ready to meet us at our front door. And the prayers–we were just overwhelmed! So many of our Cedar Community friends assured us we were on their prayer lists.

Things like this happen in a faithbased community, which is what Cedar Community’s mission is all about. When things like this happen, Cedar Community has your back, or in Carol’s case–leg. From day one, Cedar Community, affiliated with the United Church of Christ, was an exercise of faith and a ministry of the church, offering all levels of care for its residents who call this place home. It’s a place for those who need nursing care, special assistance, memory care, and those who want to live independently–all spread out on hundreds of acres of gorgeous land. Cedar Community is a place that attends to the needs and interests of the whole person whether spiritual, emotional, medical, educational, social, or physical.

Cedar Community is a community of people of all types of faith and beliefs who live together within the context of an intentional community. Martin Marty, famed church historian, has a

few things to say about that. For a while there, he wrote books faster than I could read them–and I’m a pastor of the United Church of Christ! In one of them, he makes this claim, “The Christian faith does not exist apart from the community of faith.” Think about that. Some spend an hour or so a week in a faith-based community–we live in one. In a faithbased community people know each other and take care of one another.

We discovered that 18 months ago when we returned home from Michigan. Pulling into our driveway, we were met with open arms by people who care about us.

Before long, we are back to our routines, singing in choirs, hitting the fitness center, launching our kayaks on Big Cedar Lake, attending socials and book discussions and Diversity Committee meetings, hiking along tree-lined trails, painting in the art studio, entertaining friends, and worshipping together.

In January, as we virtually celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we affirmed our heritage as a diverse community of faith. We proclaimed diversity is a good thing, a God thing, something to be fostered and nurtured.

We further proclaimed that discrimination of any sort has no place in faith-based communities and will not be tolerated. All this and more is right here, within minutes of our front door!

Because we get so much here, many feel a need to give back, to give of their time and talent in strengthening this community. The lifeblood flows from caring people who contribute thousands of volunteer hours each year to make this place work, and they love doing it! According to our volunteer coordinator, in an average year, 25,000 volunteer hours are logged by residents. As an ordained pastor, I’ve spent my life working with volunteers. That’s what people do in faith-based communities.

Survey finds residents feel safe in senior community There is no doubt the pandemic has changed our day-to-day lives, but we are fortunate at Cedar Community that our residents tell us they feel safe, and thankful that they are here. We continue to offer tours for all levels of care from independent living to short-term rehabilitation. Tours follow all COVID precautions by appointment only, but allow prospective residents, families, and patients to learn more about the Cedar Community lifestyle. We’re taking care of those that need care, hosting socially distant activities and themed events, screening team members daily and testing them weekly per guidance of federal and state health officials, wearing masks and shields, and social distancing.

A recent national survey of residents, staff, and prospective residents by Plante Moran Living Forward, the senior living development consulting division of Plante Moran Cresa, and Retirement DYNAMICS®, one of the nation’s leading senior living consulting firms, showed residents and staff in senior independent living communities felt safe during COVID-19 and confident their senior communities had taken precautions to keep them safe. They surveyed more than 23,000 residents and staff in independent living communities across the United States, as well as prospective residents, and received more than 5,000 responses.

Survey results revealed: · 92 percent of staff felt the community where they worked responded well to the pandemic. · 93 percent of residents felt there were precautions in place to keep them safe. · 77 percent of residents said they were glad to be living in a community during the pandemic. · 86 percent were glad they made the decision to move to a community. · 74 percent of prospective residents said the pandemic has not affected their moving time frame.

Celebrating

outstanding team members Every quarter, Cedar Community recognizes team members who go above and beyond their everyday tasks for our residents, families, volunteers, and their fellow team members. Cedar Community is proud to announce our team members of the quarter award winners: Emily Bowe, Med Tech/Resident Assistant, and Katelynn Hechel, Customer Relations/Sales Emily Bowe was encouraged to work at Cedar Community by a friend and several family members. While she was in high school, a friend, who worked in dining at the time, said it was a great place to work and she should apply.

Emily worked as a dining assistant for two years while finishing high school.

She graduated in 2016 from West Bend East High School, and at the encouraging of several aunts who had worked at Cedar Community, applied for a nurse’s aide position.

“I didn’t know where my career path would lead, but my aunts loved working at Cedar Community,” says Emily. They have since moved on to hospitals and other care facilities, but Emily appreciates the encouragement they provided. Emily has worked as a nurse’s aid in Cedar Community’s assisted living since graduation. In 2020, Emily’s supervisor, Kathleen Spott, RN, Director of Nursing – Assisted Living, recommended she further her skills by taking the medication technician (med tech) course. Emily has served in the role of med tech for a little over a year and often floats between both assisted living facilities and memory care. When not passing medications to residents, she performs daily nursing cares for residents which include baths, therapies, and spending one-on-one time. “I really enjoy what I do and the interactions I have every day with the residents and my wonderful team of coworkers from nursing, to dining, and activities,” says Emily. Residents and families appreciate her kindness. She even had a resident who wishes she was her daughter because of the care and compassion she provides each day.

Emily is thankful for the work she does, the care she provides, and the opportunities to learn something new every day. She also appreciates the guidance and motivation provided by her supervisor. “She pushes us to do everything and to be better, while motivating and encouraging us,” says Emily.

Kathleen feels the same way about Emily, “She has an amazing bedside manner. Every day she comes to work she has a smile on her face. Emily loves helping others, whether she is working as an aide, or as a med tech, she treats all of the residents as if they are family. She goes above and beyond assisting with the care plan by knowing what the resident likes and does not like so that the resident is able to achieve the best possible experience. Cedar Community is so blessed to have her as one of our team members.”

Her team also has many positive comments about Emily when they nominated her as Team Member of the Quarter saying, “Emily is willing to go above and beyond for any request a resident has.” “Emily is a real asset to Cedar Community.” “Emily always has a smile on her face, even if no one can see it because of the masks, they see it in her eyes.” “Emily is a go-to person and working to make the best environment for our residents.”

When Emily is not at work she enjoys hiking with her fiancé and two dogs. She is also busy planning a September 2021 wedding.

Katelynn Hechel’s team members nominated her as Team Member of the Quarter saying: “Katelynn is one of the friendliest team members at Cedar Community.” “Katelynn is always kind to others.” “Katelynn is dependable and helps in all departments as needed.” “Katelynn takes pride in her work and is the face of what our organization represents.”

While working at a bank part time, Katelynn attended Moraine Park Technical College in Fond du Lac for administrative assistant. After graduating, she continued to work at the bank full time as an operations assistant, working mostly with behind-the-scenes transactions. While she appreciated the bank opportunity and experience, she wanted to pursue something that was geared more toward her degree. She applied for a customer relations position at Cedar Community’s Elkhart Lake Campus.

Katelynn joined the Cedar Community team in December of 2015 as a customer relations associate and did that job solely for about two years. In 2017, a vacant position allowed her to add duties as a sales associate for the Elkhart Lake independent living homes.

Splitting her time between customer relations and sales associate, Katelynn greets guests and residents at the front door, answers the phone, assists residents, and helps wherever else is needed. Rachel Wolfe, Elkhart Lake Campus Director, says, “Katelynn leads by example and always pitches in. She is always flexible and takes on any challenge, helping to come up with a solution. She is a huge asset to me and Cedar Community.”

When not serving in her customer relations role, Katelynn works with prospective residents interested in Cedar Community Elkhart Lakes 40 side-by-side independent living ranch homes. Katelynn enjoys the challenges of both jobs and the variety of work. “Katelynn is amazing! If we could duplicate her we would have one of her everywhere at Cedar Community,” says Amy Meyer, Vice President of Assisted Living.

Katelynn enjoys the small town feel of Elkhart Lake. It’s also within close proximity of her home and she appreciates the flexibility of her job, working part time, while raising two children ages two and four. “I have really learned a lot working with the older generation. I enjoy coming to work every day and have no complaints.

I feel fortunate to be able to say that,” says Katelynn. She also appreciates the amazing team she has to work with and looks forward to a long career at Cedar Community. “It is really nice to feel appreciated and recognized for the work I do,” says Katelynn.

Outside of work, Katelynn enjoys spending time with family, fishing, and anything outdoorsy.

Congratulations to Carla Peplinski who was chosen as Team Member of the Year. The winner is chosen by the Team Member of the Quarter committee from all the current year’s winners.

“In a year in which all team members have needed to adapt and contribute to the care and service of our residents, Carla has continuously helped out with some of the necessary additional tasks. She has not only delivered meals to residents, but has also been in the unique position of almost single-handedly acquiring all of the personal protective equipment needed to ensure the safety of all who reside and work in our buildings. She persevered with positivity through supply shortages and skyrocketing prices, vetting new vendors to verify their legitimacy, trying to find the best pricing, as she always does. We are truly lucky to have her, and I am honored to say that Carla Peplinski is Cedar Community’s 2020 Team Member of the Year,” says Joe Pichler, Vice President of Finance.

Cedar Community welcomes new home health and hospice administrator

Nancy Chevremont

Cedar Community is pleased to welcome Nancy Chevremont as the Administrator of Cedar Community Home Health and Hospice. She has over 18 years of experience in the health care field, with an emphasis in home health and hospice.

Nancy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in public administration and political science and a Master’s of Science degree in Health Services Administration.

While attending the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Nancy was interested in political science until a class in health care policy changed her focus. Her path has led her to a variety of roles including scheduling, admissions, home health and hospice administrator, and supported Medicaid dental plans.

After several years, working as a scheduler, Nancy wanted to advance in her career and decided returning to school for her master’s degree was a priority.

She never thought her path would lead to hospice, but a friend working in the field encouraged her to give it a try. “I really enjoyed hospice care because I felt like I was making a difference in people’s lives. It was a blessing to be part of the hospice process working with patients and their families, and being their support system,” says Nancy.

At the end of 2020, Nancy was contacted by a recruiter for an open position as the home health and hospice administrator at Cedar Community. She felt like she was coming full circle after having experience working with Cedar Community through a previous job at Heartland Home Healthcare and Hospice. “Knowing the history of Cedar Community and the longevity of the staff, I knew it was a great place to work,” says Nancy. She felt it would be a great fit from the moment she met the team and was impressed with the compassion, camaraderie, and incredible teamwork, with everyone going above and beyond at a moment’s notice. “I am excited and blessed to be here,” says Nancy. She especially appreciates working for a non-profit, mission-based organization. “It’s wonderful to hear morning prayers on the overhead speaker.”

Nancy’s role includes overseeing all the services provided by Cedar Community’s Home Health and Hospice division, which is available to all Cedar Community residents and the greater community. She is responsible for assuring the highest degree of quality of care, while building relationships within the greater community. “Nancy is a great addition to our home health and hospice team and brings a wealth of knowledge in the field that will allow for continued success and growth. Her energy and compassion are a great addition to the team,” says Kelli DeRuyter, Administrator and Vice President of Clinical Services.

Outside of work, Nancy and her husband are very active in the German community in Milwaukee. They proudly celebrate their heritage and have two adult children who attended the Milwaukee German Immersion School where they became actively involved and have made many friends and connections over the years.

Spiritual care at forefront of mission

Mary Hernikl Cedar Community is a faith-based organization providing opportunities to engage body, mind, and spirit.

Six chaplains working both full and part time serve the spiritual needs of Cedar Community residents, their families, volunteers, and team members. When a resident moves to Cedar Community, oftentimes, a chaplain will meet with them to learn of their faith traditions, the importance and strength of their faith, where they find hope or seek help, and their spiritual life history. Conversations may not always revolve around spiritual care, but provide more listening and compassion, based on the needs of each person. The spiritual care team also offers opportunities to worship, work with others in fellowship and prayer, explore spirituality and diversity, and enjoy the blessing of all faith traditions. Residents are invited to participate in spiritual services at Cedar Community and continue to be active in their local congregation as they desire and are able.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cedar Community’s chaplains have continued to provide one-on-one pastoral care. They have also shared daily prayers and made chapel service and weekly reflections available to residents on Cedar Community’s internal television channel, as well as streaming on YouTube.

Bob Wells

Robert Teeple Julie Jennings has ministered in health and human service settings for over 20 years, but chaplaincy is not her first career. She received her Bachelor of Science in engineering from Duke University in North Carolina and worked as a civil engineer for several years. Her call to ministry came as she volunteered in her local church and agreed to take on the role of leading the youth ministry program. While serving in this role, Julie’s pastor and several members of her church mentioned to her that she should consider the ministry. That’s when she began to realize a new path for herself. “I was aware that something bigger was at work in my life. It was about embracing the gifts that people were

seeing in me and continuing to work in service of others and growing myself,” she says.

Julie graduated with her Master of Divinity degree from Eden Seminary in St. Louis, and was ordained in the United Church of Christ. She has chaplaincy experience working with women and children in transitional housing, adults with developmental disabilities, and youth in detention and residential treatment. In 2015, she put her ministry career on hold for a year and a half and became a full-time caregiver for her mother, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Julie Jennings Julie began her ministry career at Cedar Community in June of 2018 and appreciates serving in a historically faith-based organization that has had great vision and expansive practices.

Julie serves as the vice president of ministry and enjoys helping the team of chaplains share their many wonderful gifts. “Like the residents we serve,” she reflects, “our chaplains come from a variety of backgrounds with rich histories and diverse interests.

They bring their authentic selves to the ministry they offer and the relationships they develop. It is a privilege to serve with these compassionate people.”

Robert Teeple received his call to ministry when he was eight years old.

He recalls a recurring dream about a Bible verse saying, “God qualifies those who he calls.” Although he didn’t quite understand what it meant, he was riding his bike past a Catholic church and asked the priest. From that moment, he was put on the fast track for priesthood, but realized it wasn’t right for him–feeling he didn’t have enough life experience to counsel people.

It wasn’t until Robert was 40 that while he was sleeping he had a crushing feeling like someone was sitting on his chest. “I truly believe that was my time to answer my calling,” says Robert. While working full time and managing a family, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in religion from Greensboro College and a Master of Art in ministry from Nashotah House Theological Seminary. Robert is a board-certified chaplain having completed four units of clinical pastoral education (CPE) which includes 1,600 hours of education, interviewing with the certification board, and continuing annual accreditation.

He began his career as a health technician establishing care plans for patients in an outpatient surgical facility; was a long-term substitute art teacher in North Carolina; worked in a Milwaukee hospital as a resident chaplain collaborating with medical teams to coordinate patient services; customer service at a large retailer; and prior to Cedar Community he served as a chaplain at a medical center in Oshkosh providing ministry to the spiritual, emotional, psychosocial, and cultural needs of patients, family members, and hospital staff.

Robert was drawn to Cedar Community having had a motherin-law who lived here and a brother-

in-law who was cared for by Cedar Community’s hospice team. “The dedication of Cedar Community to the residents was a really big draw for me,” says Robert. He started in 2019 and sees residents at the skilled nursing care, short-term rehabilitation, and memory care assisted living. “Each time I meet with someone, it isn’t necessarily focused on religion. It’s being able to look beyond at the whole person, their life story, and make a connection. I feel that’s what Cedar Community is really about,” says Robert.

Outside of Cedar Community, Robert enjoys many diverse hobbies including making his own beer, wine, and cheese; processing his own meat; traveling; and painting.

Bob Wells has a very diverse background. His education includes St. Francis de Sales College in Milwaukee specializing in theology with a minor in philosophy; Pontifica Universita Gregoriana in Rome specializing in theology; and National-Louis University in Chicago with a Master of Art in teaching, specializing in English. Bob has served as an ordained minister in the Roman Catholic Church and the United Church of Christ, as well as a high school English teacher. “I have been blessed in the journey of life with the opportunity to walk on a professional path that has been interwoven with threads of full-time ordained ministry among various faith communities and full-time teaching experiences,” says Bob. Bob attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire after high school on a baseball scholarship, majoring in accounting. During his first year, two important experiences changed his awareness and purpose in life. He spoke with a campus minister about the experiences and this began his journey toward priesthood. He entered the seminary after his sophomore

year. During his overseas seminary experience, Bob was encouraged to travel and explore different cultures. In 1986, he was ordained in the Milwaukee Archdiocese. He served for 14 years before his path took another direction.

Bob went back to school for his master’s degree in education. He taught for 16 years. During that time, he also explored a return to ministry within the church. In 2009 he received a call to serve through the United Church of Christ. He served as a pulpit supply minister for 10 years. In 2019, he decided to retire from teaching with the hope of returning to full-time pastoral ministry. On his 33rd anniversary of ordination, he learned of the position at Cedar Community in the home, health, and hospice division. “Caring for my parents in their final years shaped me and I knew that was the direction I wanted to go,” says Bob. Bob joined Cedar Community in July of 2019. He is grateful and blessed to be serving with a wonderful team of chaplains and home, health, and hospice team members. He has come full circle and appreciates the opportunity to serve once again– supporting our residents and team members with love and prayer. In his spare time, Bob enjoys digging in the dirt in his “naturalized yard,” camping, hiking, listening to music, attending concerts, playing golf, supporting Wisconsin sports teams, and dabbling a bit with writing poetry.

Mary Hernikl has worked in pastoral care for over five years. Prior to that, her experience was in community relations in assisted living and memory care communities, along with a nonmedical home care company. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Lakeland College and a Master of Arts in ministry from Cardinal Stritch University. She also has

one unit of clinical pastoral education (CPE), which is 400 hours of additional education. Prior to Cedar Community, Mary worked at St. Frances Cabrini and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Bend, providing bereavement ministries and pastoral care for both parishes.

Mary started out in business college not knowing where her career would lead. She worked in sales and marketing for a retirement community for five years and enjoyed the process of moving in residents and helping them adjust emotionally. Mary always had a strong faith foundation, but says it was something that needed maturing. She attended a weekend retreat to do some soul searching and realized, at age 40, she had a calling to be a chaplain.

In 2019 Mary was hired as a parttime chaplain at Cedar Community and oversees pastoral care for both assisted living buildings at the Cedar Lake Campus. “I have never felt fulfilled in any job ever until I became a chaplain.

I found my dream job,” says Mary. In her free time, Mary enjoys bicycling, hiking, exercising, and socializing with friends.

Tricia Holley earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a major in American studies and a minor in psychology and religious studies. She also holds a Master of Divinity degree from the University of Dubuque Theology Seminary. Tricia has been actively involved in a variety of churches and community organizations assisting with interfaith activities, ministry, and spiritual care. She has worked in home health and hospice settings visiting with patients and providing and coordinating spiritual care services for patients and their families, as well as providing emotional support and education. Tricia has also served as a resident chaplain for a hospital, leading team members on

improving understandings of cultural diversity; valuing differences; the impact of illness on quality of life; and providing support to patients, families, and team members.

Tricia attended college later in life after spending time as a truck driver and working at a window and door company. “When I finally decided what I wanted to do when I grew up, I went back to school for my bachelors and masters in divinity,” says Tricia. She was often the person people came to when they needed to discuss personal issues. It was natural for her, she was comfortable with end-of-life and death, and wanted to work with the older population. Tricia has four units of clinical pastoral education (CPE).

She currently works part time in Cedar Community’s independent living and also part time at Zilber Family Hospice in Wauwatosa.

Tricia appreciates the balance of working with residents in independent living and hospice care. She enjoys learning about people’s life stories and also helping them transition to endof-life care. “It’s all about the needs of the people I serve wherever they are in their life, or whatever they may need. I just want to be here if they need to share.

It doesn’t have to be about reading scripture or praying with them, it’s about fulfilling a need and what they find helpful,” says Tricia.

When not working, Tricia enjoys riding her motorcycle with her longest trip being 7,000 miles, woodworking, being in nature, and traveling.

Dale Miller attended Lakeland College for two and a half years and studied ministry. When life intervened, he left school, got married, and had a family. He comes from a family of brick layers and took an apprenticeship in 1973, something he did for 44 years.

While Dale misses being outside and building things, he is now building relationships and has returned to active ministry. “I never wandered far from the church and always had felt a calling, a push, or a nudge to serve,” says Dale. In 2004 he learned about the Lay Academy - Wisconsin Conference UCC and enrolled in their four-year weekend program. The process changed the way Dale viewed God and it became a calling for him. “There were intervening moments in my life where God has worked with me, for me, in spite of me,” says Dale. During his training at the Lay Academy, Dale lost his son and feels if it hadn’t been for his faith, he doubts he and his wife would have make it through that time.

Dale has been encouraged to grow in his faith and has served as pastor for two churches in the Plymouth area. He is currently at a small church in Plymouth and also works as a parttime chaplain at Cedar Community’s Elkhart Lake Campus. Dale was familiar with Cedar Community, volunteering as a chaplain since 2014, until he was hired in 2018. He also works as an oncall pastor at three funeral homes for families who have no church affiliation.

Dale considers himself retired, but three jobs keep him busy and working fulltime hours.

Dale has always been involved in something and enjoys being active.

He feels he receives more than he gives. “I enjoy building relationships with the residents, hearing their stories, and learning about and connecting with their families. I also admire and get to work with wonderful team members at Elkhart Lake and also a wonderful group of chaplains,” says Dale.

In his “retired” time, Dale enjoys sports, reading, building, and spending time with family. In the future, he hopes to travel more.

Operation Winter Wonderland The idea, developed by Sarah Malchow, Cedar Community Director of Philanthropy, was initiated to actively engage volunteers, while conforming to COVID-19 guidelines. It provided a holiday team building and volunteer engagement opportunity for local businesses who wanted to show support for the community. Regal Ware, Douglas Dynamics, and West Bend Children’s Theatre, Inc., each graciously adopted a courtyard at Cedar Community and decked them out in wonderful Christmas displays and lights for the residents to enjoy during the holidays.

Veteran’s salute Horicon Bank and National Exchange Bank and Trust donated Christmas trees and decorations, showcasing a red, white, and blue theme in gratitude to our veterans during the holiday season.

Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School provided art and cards acknowledging veterans for their service to our country.

Among all the volunteers, we also thank those who generously donated to Cedar Community through financial contributions and gifts shared with residents and team members.

How to Paint Water with Susan Ploughe

Learn the fascinating art of copper enameling. Beth will guide you through cutting and filing flowers and adding powdered glass to your design before kiln firing and assembling. Each student receives individual attention.

No previous experience required.

Explore reflections, ripples, calm surfaces, waves, waterfalls, glistening surfaces, and shallow transparent pools. Learn the characteristics of water and practice different painting techniques to convey different types of water features. Demos will be in oils, but students may also use acrylics or pastels.

ESTATE PLANNING | SIX QUESTIONS THAT MATTER WHO: Who will make healthcare/financial decisions on my behalf if I can’t?

Probably one of the most important things you can do is make sure a trusted family member, friend, or loved one is able to make decisions when you can’t. A financial power of attorney and a healthcare power of attorney will make certain your loved ones can assist you when you need it.

WHAT: What do I own?

Sounds curious, but carefully making a list of your assets may be harder than you think! Orphan retirement accounts, savings accounts, and even life insurance policies can be forgotten over time. Compiling a list of your assets will help you plan your next steps and more accurately plan for the future.

WHEN: When was the last time my will was updated?

If your will and/or trust was created or updated more than five years ago, it is time for a careful review. Asset allocations fluctuate, interests and commitments may change, and beneficiaries may need to be reconsidered.

WHERE: Where are my assets located?

For any variety of reasons, you may have assets spread over a number of financial institutions, real estate in different cities or states, or various retirement accounts associated with prior employers. Getting a firm handle on what’s where (and documenting it appropriately) will help your family and loved ones manage your affairs when you need their assistance.

WHY: Why does it matter?

I’m confident we’ve covered this before–but it bears repeating. Making your wishes (and how you intend to fulfill them) clearly known today, will help ensure it gets done tomorrow. If YOU don’t decide what to do about your end-of-life circumstances— the hospital will. If YOU don’t determine how your estate is to be distributed to family or charitable organizations—the government certainly will. Getting organized today is the only way to ensure your legacy—tomorrow.

HOW: How will I make sure my wishes are carried out?

There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a will or trust. The size of your estate, considerations of unique family situations or loved ones needing ongoing financial support, and the complexity of your assets all matter. Choosing a will or trust is a personal decision and is best made with the advice of a trusted estate planning advisor. Whichever you choose, be sure to clearly state your direction so your representative or trustee can confidently carry out your wishes.

Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s The latest Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s with Judy Steffes was in the Florida Keys. It was eight days of nearly 500 miles of adventure as Steffes pedaled from Miami to Key Largo, down to Key West, and then into the Everglades. There were nights spent camping with crocodiles, tours of Hemingway’s house and the African Queen, and a single-day diet of nothing but key lime pie. Quite a few generous neighbors followed along on the tour with regular updates posted on WashingtonCountyInsider.com. She raised $2,400 which will support music and exercise programs for residents at Cedar Community.
